Abstract
As a further development of the previously introduced a posteriori Universal State-Selective (USS) corrections [K. Kowalski, J. Chem. Phys. 134, 194107 (2011); J. Brabec et al., ibid. 136, 124102 (2012)], we suggest an iterative form of the USS correction by means of correcting effective Hamiltonian matrix elements. We also formulate USS corrections via the left Bloch equations. The convergence of the USS corrections with excitation level towards the full configuration interaction (FCI) limit is also investigated. Various forms of the USS and simplified diagonal USS corrections at the singles and doubles and perturbative triple levels are numerically assessed on several model systems and on the ozone and tetramethyleneethane molecules. It is shown that the iterative USS correction can successfully replace the previously developed a posteriori Brillouin-Wigner coupled cluster size-extensivity correction, while it is not sensitive to intruder states and performs well also in other cases when the a posteriori one fails, like, e.g., for the asymmetric vibration mode of ozone.

Abstract
Vanadium, a dietary micronutrient, has recently been found to possess a potent antitumor activity during chemically induced rat liver carcinogenesis. In the present study, attempts have been made to understand the basic mechanism of the antitumor response of vanadium by monitoring its effect on chromosomal aberrations (CA) in rat liver cells during the early preneoplastic steps of diethylnitrosamine (DENA)-induced hepatocarcinogenesis. Supplementary vanadium at 0.5 ppm was found to afford a unique protection against DENA-evoked CA 96 h after DENA injection. Concurrent administration of glutathione (GSH) at 200 mg/kg 2 h before DENA treatment potentiated the suppressive effect of vanadium against CA when the rats were sacrificed 96 h after the carcinogenic insult. Pretreatment nf rate with buthionine sulfoximine (890 mg/kg) and/or diethylmaleate (600 mg/kg) 0.5 or 2 h prior to DENA injection resulted in a significant inhibition of vanadium-mediated protection of CA with a concomitant fall in hepatic GSH level. Rats given injection of bromosulfophthalein (250 mg/kg), a substrate inhibitor of glutathione S-transferase (GST), 0.5 h before DENA treatment displayed a prominent suppression of the protective effect of vanadium on DENA-induced CA. Long-term supplementation of vanadium also triggered protective effect against the induction of CA 15, 30 or 45 days following DENA treatment which was maximally observed on structural aberrations followed by numerical aberrations. At these time points, vanadium was found to lower the mitotic index of hepatic cells which was otherwise elevated with DENA alone. Vanadium restored DENA-dependent decrement in the ratio of polychromatic erythrocytes (PCE) to normochromatic erythrocytes (NCE) in rat liver cells. The DENA-induced increased frequency of micronucleated PCE as well as NCE was also attenuated following vanadium supplementation. The anticlastogenic effect of vanadium was found to be parallel to its ability to induce the activity of hepatic GST with a concurrent induction of hepatic GSH pool which were rather decreased in DENA control group. The results of this study, thus, provide evidence that vanadium-dependent induction of GSH-mediated GST-catalyzed detoxificational capacity of the host is presumably related to its suppressive effect against CA. This may explain, in part, the antitumor efficacy of this trace element.

Spin-valve-like magnetoresistance in Mn2NiGa at room temperature. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2012; 109:246601. Abstract
Spin valves have revolutionized the field of magnetic recording and memory devices. Spin valves are generally realized in thin film heterostructures, where two ferromagnetic (FM) layers are separated by a nonmagnetic conducting layer. Here, we demonstrate spin-valve-like magnetoresistance at room temperature in a bulk ferrimagnetic material that exhibits a magnetic shape memory effect. The origin of this unexpected behavior in Mn(2)NiGa has been investigated by neutron diffraction, magnetization, and ab initio theoretical calculations. The refinement of the neutron diffraction pattern shows the presence of antisite disorder where about 13% of the Ga sites are occupied by Mn atoms. On the basis of the magnetic structure obtained from neutron diffraction and theoretical calculations, we establish that these antisite defects cause the formation of FM nanoclusters with parallel alignment of Mn spin moments in a Mn(2)NiGa bulk lattice that has antiparallel Mn spin moments. The direction of the Mn moments in the soft FM cluster reverses with the external magnetic field. This causes a rotation or tilt in the antiparallel Mn moments at the cluster-lattice interface resulting in the observed asymmetry in magnetoresistance.

Abstract
In past research, we found that carbon ion irradiation increased bone volume in rats, and a significant amount of cartilage remained inside the carbon ion-irradiated trabeculae. The amounts of matrix metalloproteinase 13 (MMP-13) mRNA in osteoblast-like MC3T3-E1 cells tended to decrease after carbon ion irradiation. The level of MMP-13 mRNA in non-irradiated cells was stable during the experimental period, but in gamma ray-irradiated cells it tended to increase. When localization of MMP-13 in locally irradiated experimental rats was investigated, it was found in the marginal trabeculae in both non-irradiated and gamma ray-irradiated animals. MMP-13 was detected in osteoid and neogenetic bone in the trabeculae surface. The trabeculae in carbon ion-irradiated bone remained cartilaginous. Carbon ion-irradiated rats exhibited weak expression of MMP-13 around the cartilage inside the trabeculae. We conclude that carbon ion irradiation reduced expression of MMP-13, thus suppressing both chondrocyte maturation and cartilage resorption. Increases in hyperplasia of the bone trabeculae and of bone volume were caused by ongoing bone addition and calcification in the absence of sufficient cartilage resorption.

Abstract
Methanosarcina barkeri DSM-804, a methanogenic bacterium, when exposed to microwave radiation of frequencies ranging from 13.5 to 36.5 GHz, showed faster growth in comparison to the unirradiated bacterial culture. Methane concentration in the biogas generated from the irradiated culture was higher than that from unirradiated one, which was to 76.3% on the 15th day of incubation at a microwave radiation frequency of 31.5 GHz, 10 dbm power when irradiated for 2 h. Microscopic study of pure culture revealed that the cells of M. barkeri were more in number and their cell diameter was enlarged by 20%. Inoculation of the culture in a biogas digester containing a combination of jute waste and vegetable market waste as substrate increased the efficacy of biomethanation and reduced its lag phase significantly.

Abstract
Two fundamental manifestations of Al conduction electron response to Ar atom core hole in the final state of photoemission have been studied in implanted Ar bubbles in Al(111). Ar 2p binding energy and the Doniach-Sunjić asymmetry of the core-level line shape vary systematically as functions of Ar+ implantation energy and number of ions bombarded (fluence). The observations are explained by relating the strength of Al conduction electron screening to the size of the Ar nanobubbles.

Abstract
Since the 18th century scientists have been intrigued by the interaction of electromagnetic fields (EMFs) and various life processes. Attention has been focussed on EMFs in different frequency ranges, of which microwave frequency range forms an important part. Microwaves are part of the electromagnetic spectrum and are considered to be that radiation ranging in frequency from 300 million cycles per second (300 MHz) to 300 billion cycles per second (300 GHz), which correspond to a wavelength range of 1 m down to 1 mm. This nonionising electromagnetic radiation is absorbed at molecular level and manifests as changes in vibrational energy of the molecules or heat (Microwaves irradiating the community, Hidden hazards, Bantan Books publisher, Australia, 1991). Identifying and evaluating the biological effects of microwaves have been complex and controversial. Because of the paucity of information on the mechanism of interaction between microwave and biological systems, there has been a persistent view in physical and engineering sciences, that microwave fields are incapable of inducing bioeffects other than by heating (Health Physics 61 (1991) 3). Of late, the nonthermal effects of microwaves on tissue responses are being documented (Physiol. Rev. 61 (1981) 435; Annals of New York Acad. Sci. 247 (1975) 232; J. Microwave Power 14 (1979) 351; Bioelectromagnetics 7 (1986a) 45; Bioelectromagnetics 7 (1986b) 315; Biologic Effects and Health Hazards of Microwave Radiation, Warsaw, Polish Medical Publication (1974) 289; Biologic Effects and Health hazards of the microwave Radiation, Warsaw, Polish Medical Publication (1974) 22; Multidisciplinory perspectives in event-related brain potential research, Washington DC, US Environmental Protection Agency, (1978) 444). The present article is an attempt to familiarise the reader with pertinent information regarding the effects, mainly athermal, of microwave irradiation on biologic systems, especially microorganisms.

Abstract
Cadmium, a heavy metal, has been found to possess a potent toxic effect on liver and bone marrow. In the present study, attempts were made to understand whether or not any correlation existed between hepatic lipid peroxidation, glutathione S-transferase activity, reduced glutathione level and chromosome aberrations, micronucleus and mitotic index in bone marrow cells of Balb/C male mice. Cadmium chloride (2.5 mg/kg b.wt.), when administered subcutaneously for 7 alternate days, exerted duration-dependent toxic effects on hepatic biochemical and cytogenetic parameters of bone marrow. A shorter time interval (5 days) elicited no significant alteration in the case of biochemical parameters, but with the advancement of time (i.e. after 10 and 15 days) lipid peroxidation showed 102% (p < 0.001) elevation and after 15 days, glutathione S-transferase activity and reduced glutathione level decreased by 35%, (p < 0.001) and 32% (p < 0.001), respectively, from the control values with concomitant elevation of chromosomal aberrations (30%) and micronucleus (2.32%) but the mitotic index was inhibited by 1.26%. The results of our study, provided evidence of cadmium-induced duration-dependent depression of GSH-mediated GST-catalysed detoxication capacity of the host and that this was presumably related to the induction of chromosomal aberrations. The clastogenic efficacy of this heavy metal was thus evident from the study.

Abstract
A 71-year-old asbestos-exposed male with symptoms suggestive of asbestosis for the previous 8 years presented with abdominal distension and ascites. Clinically, a diagnosis of mesothelioma carcinoma was made. Light microscopy of an omental biopsy failed to advance the diagnosis: The tumor was a solid, papillary, and glandular neoplasm lacking mucin and hyaluronidase-sensitive Alcian blue staining material. Immunohistochemistry gave positive results for Ber-EP4, LeuM1, and CEA, markers, favoring carcinoma. Electron microscopy revealed processes in channels and lumina, which were long, slender, and uncoated with a length: diameter ratio of 19.7. A few possessed small rootlets. A glycocalyx and glycocalyceal bodies were not seen. Other features included tonofibrils, a basal lamina, and desmosomes. The patient died 3 months following the onset of abdominal symptoms. Autopsy findings included solid and papillary tumor throughout the peritoneum, but no intrinsic tumor of the gastrointestinal tract or elsewhere. Arriving at a final diagnosis was complicated by immunohistochemistry, which favored carcinoma, and ultrastructure, which suggested mesothelioma. Taking into account all lines of evidence, it was concluded that the tumor was probably a mesothelioma but one with some features developed to an extent more typical of carcinoma.

Abstract
Concentrations of serotonin (5-HT) and its metabolite 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) were studied in discrete areas of brain and in large intestine of Swiss mice following transplantation of Sarcoma 180 (S 180) ascites tumor. Significant increase in 5-HT levels (2 to 3.5-fold over controls, P < 0.05) was observed in raphe region of the brain throughout the period of tumor growth. Concomitant increase, although of lesser magnitude, was recorded in raphe 5-HIAA content. 5-HT content of hypothalamus, mid brain and caudate putamen, on the other hand, remained relatively unaltered except for an increase at the advanced stage of the disease. While mid brain and hypothalamic 5-HIAA were elevated at the late stage, 5-HIAA values of caudate putamen were normal or slightly reduced during the progression of tumor. Both 5-HT and 5-HIAA levels of the large intestine showed an early decline followed by a modest increase at the late stages. Brain and plasma tryptophan levels were also elevated significantly (P < 0.05) in the tumor hosts. The results suggest a close relationship between increase in serotonin concentrations in the brain, particularly in raphe region, and the progression of S-180 tumor in mice.

Abstract
Light microscopical and routine immunohistochemical studies of a cervical neoplasm in a 32 year old woman initially suggested a histiocytic lymphoma, but histochemical staining for chloroacetate esterase established the correct diagnosis. This was supported by electron microscopic findings. Eight months later the patient developed a granulocytic sarcoma in her left breast and haemotological features of acute myeloid leukaemia. Accurate initial diagnosis of granulocytic sarcoma in a non-leukaemic patient may reduce the risk of subsequent acute myeloid leukaemia if appropriate chemotherapy is begun in time.

Abstract
A case of multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome (MEN) in a 57-year-old woman with multiple endocrine tumours involving the pancreas, parathyroid and thyroid glands is reported. An unusual feature was the presence of collision tumours in the pituitary and adrenal. In the pituitary there were adenomas and a meningioma whereas in the adrenal there was a carcinoma along with a myelolipoma. Such collision tumours in the pituitary and adrenal as components of MEN syndrome have not been previously described.

Abstract
To find out the role of pituitary in Mitomycin C (MC) induced reduction of testicular steroidogenesis, MC was administered along with HCG and the testicular steroidogenic activity was assessed on the basis of different parameters which are directly and indirectly related to the rate of testicular steroid biogenesis. The results indicate that MC induced reduction in testicular steroidogenesis is not only due to its direct effect but suppression of pituitary gonadotrophin secretion may be one of the responsible factor.

Abstract
Haemorrhagic infarction of the breast induced by anticoagulant therapy is rare and has been infrequently reported in the literature. The following report illustrates such a case in which there was development of massive haemorrhagic infarction of the breast during treatment with nicoumalone for deep venous thrombosis after an operation for carcinoma of the colon.

Abstract
Testicular steroidogenesis was determined by radioimmuno assay of serum testosterone and histochemical demonstration of the key steroidogenic enzyme (delta 5 3 beta hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase) activity in the Leydig cells after treatment with mitomycin C (mc), (500 microgram/kg, Bwt). In vivo experiments showed mc treatment causes a remarkable fall of serum testosterone level along with significant reduction in the weights of testis and sex accessories. In vitro studies resulted in a diminution in the delta 5 3 beta hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase activity in the section of the testis after addition of mc (100, 200 microgram/ml) in the incubation medium. The consideration of the above findings coroborated to the suggestion that mc reduced testicular steroidogenesis.

Abstract
Treatment with mitomycin C resulted in a decrease in the testicular delta 5-3 beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase level along with a fall of Leydig cell nuclear area. Following the same treatment the significant fall of sex accessory organ weights and testicular accumulation of ascorbic acid and cholesterol were noted. On the basis of above evidence it is suggested that mitomycin C probably suppressed testicular steroidogenesis.
