Search for the supersymmetric partner of the top quark in dilepton events from pp collisions at square root of s=1.8 TeV. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2003; 90:251801. Abstract
We have searched for pair production of the supersymmetric partner of the top quark (stop) in 107 pb(-1) of pp collisions at square root of s=1.8 TeV collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF). Each stop is assumed to decay into a lepton, bottom quark, and supersymmetric neutrino. Such a scenario would give rise to events with two leptons, two hadronic jets, and a substantial imbalance of transverse energy. No evidence of such a stop signal has been found. We exclude stop masses in the region (80</=m(t)</=135 GeV/c(2)) in the mass plane of stop versus sneutrino.

Abstract
We report a search for the production of long-lived charged massive particles in a data sample of 90 pb(-1) of square root[s]=1.8 TeV pp collisions recorded by the Collider Detector at Fermilab. The search uses the muonlike penetration and anomalously high ionization energy loss signature expected for such a particle to discriminate it from backgrounds. The data are found to agree with background expectations, and cross section limits of O(1) pb are derived using two reference models, a stable quark and a stable scalar lepton.

Abstract
We report the results of a search for a W' boson produced in pp; collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.8 TeV using a 106 pb(-1) data sample recorded by the Collider Detector at Fermilab. We observe no significant excess of events above background for a W' boson decaying to a top and bottom quark pair. In a model where this boson would mediate interactions involving a massive right-handed neutrino (nu(R)) and have standard model strength couplings, we use these data to exclude a W' boson with mass between 225 and 536 GeV/c(2) at 95% confidence level for M(W')>>M(nu(R)) and between 225 and 566 GeV/c(2) at 95% confidence level for M(W')<M(nu(R)).

Abstract
Genes encoding three enzymes with xylanase activity from the filamentous fungus Penicillium funiculosum are described. Two of the encoded xylanases are predicted to be modular in structure with catalytic and substrate-binding domains separated by a serine and threonine-rich linker region; the other had none of these properties and was non-modular. In order to develop P. funiculosum as a host for the secreted production of heterologous proteins, each of the xylanases was assessed for use as a carrier protein in a fusion strategy. We show that one of the modular xylanases (encoded by xynA) was an effective carrier protein but the other (encoded by xynB) and the non-modular xylanase (encoded by xynC) were not effective as secretion carriers. We show that the beta-glucuronidase (GUS) protein from Escherichia coli is secreted by P. funiculosum when expressed as an XYNA fusion but that the secreted GUS protein, cleaved in vivo from XYNA, is glycosylated and enzymatically inactive.

Abstract
The methods of evaluating change and improvement strategies are not well described. The design and conduct of a range of experimental and non-experimental quantitative designs are considered. Such study designs should usually be used in a context where they build on appropriate theoretical, qualitative and modelling work, particularly in the development of appropriate interventions. A range of experimental designs are discussed including single and multiple arm randomised controlled trials and the use of more complex factorial and block designs. The impact of randomisation at both group and individual levels and three non-experimental designs (uncontrolled before and after, controlled before and after, and time series analysis) are also considered. The design chosen will reflect both the needs (and resources) in any particular circumstances and also the purpose of the evaluation. The general principle underlying the choice of evaluative design is, however, simple-those conducting such evaluations should use the most robust design possible to minimise bias and maximise generalisability.

Continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) versus hospital or home haemodialysis for end-stage renal disease in adults. Cochrane Database Syst Rev 2003:CD003963. Abstract
BACKGROUND Renal replacement therapy (RRT) with dialysis and transplantation is the only means of sustaining life for patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Although transplantation is the treatment of choice, the number of donor kidneys are limited and transplants may fail. Hence many patients require long-term or even life-long dialysis. Continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) is an alternative to hospital or home haemodialysis for patients with ESRD. OBJECTIVES To assess the benefits and harms of CAPD versus hospital or home haemodialysis for adults with ESRD. SEARCH STRATEGY We searched the Cochrane Controlled Trials Register (Cochrane Library, Issue 2, 2002), the Cochrane Renal Group's Specialised Register (May 2002), MEDLINE (1966 - May 2002), EMBASE (1980 - May 2002), BIOSIS, CINHAL, SIGLE and NRR without language restriction. Reference lists of retrieved articles and conference proceedings were searched and known investigators and biomedical companies were contacted. SELECTION CRITERIA Randomised controlled trials (RCTs) or quasi-RCTs comparing CAPD to hospital or home haemodialysis for adults with ESRD were to be included. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS Two reviewers were to independently assess the methodological quality of studies. Data was to be abstracted from included studies onto a standard form by one reviewer and checked by another. Statistical analyses were to be performed using the random effects model and the results to be expressed as relative risk (RR) with 95% confidence intervals (95% CI). MAIN RESULTS Despite extensive searching, no RCTs or quasi-RCTs were identified. REVIEWER'S CONCLUSIONS Data are not available to allow conclusions to be drawn about the relative effectiveness of CAPD compared with hospital or home haemodialysis for adults with ESRD. Efforts should be made to start and complete adequately powered RCTs, which compare the different dialysis modalities.

Abstract
The exclusive gammaE(T) signal has a small standard model cross section and is thus a channel sensitive to new physics. This signature is predicted by models with a superlight gravitino or with large extra spatial dimensions. We search for such signals at the Collider Detector at Fermilab, using 87 pb(-1) of data at square root [s]=1.8 TeV, and extract 95% C.L. limits on these processes. A limit of 221 GeV is set on the scale |F|(1/2) in supersymmetric models. For 4, 6, and 8 extra dimensions, model-dependent limits on the fundamental mass scale M(D) of 0.55, 0.58, and 0.60 TeV, respectively, are found. We also specify a "pseudo-model-independent" method of comparing the results to theoretical predictions.

Abstract
Our aim was to evaluate topographically specific gastric motility changes induced by graded vagal activation. A recently developed method of constructing spatio-temporal maps of motility from video movies was adapted to the in vitro perfused guinea-pig stomach with an intact vagal nerve supply. In the unstimulated preparation, spontaneous activity was low or absent. Bilateral vagal stimulation with frequencies as low as 0.2 Hz triggered weak anally, and in some cases orally, propagating antral contractions at rates of about 5-6 min-1. Upon stimulation with higher frequencies, antral contractions increased significantly in length (starting more proximally) and amplitude, and produced large pressure peaks of up to 25 hPa, with maximal effects at 2-4 Hz. In contrast, the speed of propagation and the interval between peristaltic waves did not change with vagal stimulation at any frequency. Vagal stimulation also produced a significant and frequency-dependent enlargement of the fundus with a maximal effect at 4 Hz. It is concluded that a very low tonic vagal activity is apparently necessary and sufficient to express basic antral motility, while more sustained vagal activity is necessary for high-amplitude gastric contractions and significant sustained fundic relaxation. The constant interval between propagating contractions supports the concept that vagal input impinges on intrinsic enteric neural circuits that have a modulatory role in the myogenic mechanism underlying slow-wave peristalsis, rather than directly on gastric musculature.

The storage and re-infusion of autologous blood and BM as back-up following failed primary hematopoietic stem-cell transplantation: a survey of European practice. Cytotherapy 2002; 4:127-35. Abstract
BACKGROUND Traditionally, autologous BM or PBSC have been stored as a secondary source ('back-up') of hematopoietic stem cells (HSC) prior to allogeneic and autologous HSC transplantation. METHOD We conducted an audit of a single transplant center practice for providing back-up HSC and compared this practice with other European centers. Laboratory records relating to the collection and re-infusion of consecutive HSC harvests were reviewed for 515 transplants (300 autologous and 215 allogeneic HSC transplants). RESULTS In our experience, 2.3% (five of 215) of allogeneic HSC transplants required secondary HSC rescue for failure to engraft or graft failure (MUD, n = 2; un-manipulated sibling BMT, n = 1; T-cell depleted sibling BMT, n = 2). For autologous transplants, 4.7% (14 of 300) required rescue due to failure to engraft or late graft failure (ABMT for AML, n = 8; CD34+ cell selection/ex vivo expanded, n = 4; ABMT/PBSCT, n = 2). Among the European centers, 69.7% replied to a postal questionnaire, demonstrating that 81.4% and 45.6% of centers stored a secondary HSC source for manipulated and unmanipulated MUD BMT, respectively; 50% and 11.6% of centers stored a secondary source of HSC for manipulated and unmanipulated matched sibling BMT, respectively; 36.4% and 12.7% of centers stored HSC for manipulated and unmanipulated matched sibling PBSCT, respectively. In the autologous setting, 15.2% and 62.1% of centers stored back-up for unmanipulated and manipulated BMT, respectively and 19.5% and 68.5% stored back-up for unmanipulated and manipulated PBSCT, respectively, when myeloablative conditioning regimens were used. DISCUSSION These data suggest that a small minority of patients require a secondary source of HSC rescue, most commonly in transplants with higher risk of graft failure. This is reflected in the practice across Europe of storing 'back-up' HSC. Guidelines should accommodate the need for storage of a secondary source of HSC only in those transplants associated with a higher risk of graft failure, especially in relation to graft engineering.

Longer-Term Clinical and Economic Benefits of Offering Acupuncture to Patients with Chronic Low Back Pain Assessed as Suitable for Primary Care Management – 3 Month Clinical Outcomes from a Controlled Trial of 241 Patients. Abstract
Objectives To undertake a pragmatic randomised controlled trial to test the hypothesis that a population of patients with persistent low back pain, when given access to an acupuncture service, gain more relief from pain than those offered usual management only, for equal or less cost. Methods The study is a pragmatic randomised controlled trial (n=241). Suitable patients are identified by their general practitioners. Patients randomised to the experimental arm are offered the option of referral for up to 10 individualised treatments from one of six qualified acupuncture practitioners. The control group continues to receive usual management from their general practitioner. The primary scale used for measuring change is the Bodily Pain (SF–36) at 3 months and 12 months post randomisation. The main outcome is cost-effectiveness at 12 months. Results A total of 43 general practitioners participated in the trial and 241 patients were randomised. All patients randomised to the option of acupuncture chose to receive treatment. Clinical outcomes at 3 months show that the SF-36 Bodily Pain scores improved by 29.4 and 24.9 points in the acupuncture and normal management group respectively (p=0.125). Patients in the acupuncture group reported lower levels of worry at three months (p<0.001). Conclusions It is possible to conduct a large pragmatic randomised controlled trial of acupuncture in a primary care setting. Acupuncture is seen as an acceptable treatment by patients with low back pain. Clinical outcomes at three months suggest that the acupuncture group are in less pain than the control group.

Abstract
We present the results of a search in pp collisions at sqrt[s] = 1.8 TeV for anomalous production of events containing a photon and a lepton (e or mu), both with large transverse energy, using 86 pb(-1) of data collected with the Collider Detector at Fermilab during the 1994-1995 collider run at the Fermilab Tevatron. The presence of large missing transverse energy (E(T)), additional photons, or additional leptons in these events is also analyzed. The results are consistent with standard model expectations, with the possible exception of photon-lepton events with large E(T), for which the observed total is 16 events and the expected mean total is 7.6+/-0.7 events.

Abstract
The object of this study was to determine which attributes of clinical practice recommendations influence changes in clinical practice following audit and feedback. This was an observational study using multilevel modeling to examine the relationship between attributes of clinical practice recommendations and compliance with the recommendations before and after audit and feedback. Sixteen hospital gynecology units in Scotland participated in a national audit project. Clinical practice recommendations covering selected gynecological topics were developed and data collected to assess baseline (preintervention) compliance. Summaries of performance were fed back to consultant gynecologists in each hospital and follow-up (postintervention) data were collected. Trained audit assistants used standardized forms to abstract data from case notes. Compliance data were available at baseline and follow-up for a total of 42 clinical practice recommendations. Altogether, 4,664 case notes contributed to baseline data and 4,382 to follow-up data. Thirteen attributes describing clinical practice recommendations were developed, based upon previous work, and pretested. A panel of seven consultant gynecologists rated the extent to which each of the 42 recommendations possessed each of the 13 attributes. The main outcome measures were the association of each attribute with compliance and with changes in clinical practice. Recommendations compatible with clinician values and not requiring changes to fixed routines were independently associated with greater compliance at baseline and follow-up. However, recommendations incompatible with clinician values were independently associated with greater change in practice following audit and feedback. Attributes of recommendations may influence the effectiveness of audit and feedback in secondary care. Recommendations seen as incompatible with clinician values are associated with lower compliance but greater behavioral change following audit and feedback.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Prokinetic agents have shown variable efficacy in the treatment of functional dyspepsia. Mosapride is a new prokinetic 5-hydroxytryptamine-4 agonistic agent. AIM To evaluate the efficacy of three dosage regimens of mosapride compared with placebo in the treatment of functional dyspepsia. METHODS Patients were randomly allocated to treatment with placebo or mosapride (5 mg b.d., 10 mg b.d. or 7.5 mg t.d.s.) in a double-blind, prospective, multicentre, multinational study. The change in symptom severity score from an untreated baseline week to the sixth week of treatment was used to compare treatment efficacy. RESULTS There were 141, 140, 143 and 142 patients valid for evaluation in the intention-to-treat population in the placebo, mosapride 5 mg b.d., mosapride 10 mg b.d. and mosapride 7.5 mg t.d.s. groups, respectively. The mean changes in the overall dyspeptic symptom score were - 0.90, - 0.94, - 0.88 and - 0.89, respectively, and the proportions of patients feeling better at the end of the treatment period were 60%, 59%, 59% and 61%, respectively. No statistically significant difference was seen. CONCLUSIONS Treatment of functional dyspepsia with mosapride was not superior to placebo. The result raises the question of whether treatment with prokinetic agents is appropriate for functional dyspepsia.

Abstract
We report on measurements of the Upsilon(1S), Upsilon(2S), and Upsilon(3S) differential cross sections (d(2)sigma/dp(T)dy)(/y/<0.4), as well as on the Upsilon(1S) polarization in p p macro collisions at square root of s = 1.8 TeV using a sample of 77+/-3 pb(-1) collected by the collider detector at Fermilab. The three resonances were reconstructed through the decay Upsilon-->mu(+)mu(-). The measured angular distribution of the muons in the Upsilon(1S) rest frame is consistent with unpolarized meson production.

Abstract
We report a measurement of the diffractive structure function F(D)(jj) of the antiproton obtained from a study of dijet events produced in association with a leading antiproton in pp collisions at sqrt[s] = 630 GeV at the Fermilab Tevatron. The ratio of F(D)(jj) at sqrt[s] = 630 GeV to F(D)(jj) obtained from a similar measurement at sqrt[s] = 1800 GeV is compared with expectations from QCD factorization and other theoretical predictions. We also report a measurement of the xi ( x-Pomeron) and beta ( x of parton in Pomeron) dependence of F(D)(jj) at sqrt[s] = 1800 GeV. In the region 0.035<xi<0.095, /t/<1 GeV2, and beta<0.5, F(D)(jj)(beta,xi) is found to be of the form beta(-1.0+/-0.1)xi(-0.9+/-0.1), which obeys beta-xi factorization.

Abstract
The 2-year rodent bioassay has long had a central role in determining whether a compound is carcinogenic. It has recently been suggested that the use of 6-month studies in transgenic mice could reduce costs and animal numbers, without impairing the validity of cancer risk assessment. The p53+/- hemizygous knockout mouse model is phenotypically stable and develops tumors during the 6-month study period only in response to chemical and physical stimuli, showing a high concordance with genotoxic rodent carcinogens. We treated p53+/- mice and wild-type parent strain (C57BL/6J) animals with diethylstilbestrol (DES). 500 micromol/kg i.p. for 4 days. Following sacrifice, DNA was extracted from various tissues and adducts measured by a modified monophosphate version of the 32P-postlabelling assay. Major DES adducts were detected in the liver DNA of DES-treated wild-type mice at a level of 118.7+/-17.0 (mean +/- SD relative adduct level [RAL]/10(10) nucleotides) compared with 207.7+/-36.4 in p53+/- mice. No such adducts were detected in vehicle-treated animals. Total adduct levels, including endogenous I-compound adducts, in wild-type mice were 192.4+/-17.5 and 311.5+/-58.6 in p53+/- animals. These data support the hypothesis that deficient p53-dependent global genomic repair of DES adducts in p53+/- mice may result in the persistence of exogenous and endogenous DNA adducts that could contribute to earlier carcinogenicity in this model. We also prepared hepatic microsomes from male and female p53+/- and wild-type mice exposed to DES or vehicle. Western blot analysis demonstrated modestly higher basal levels of various cytochrome P450 (CYP) enzymes in the untreated p53+/- mice compared to the wild-type mice. Furthermore, P450 levels were higher in female DES-treated p53+/- mice compared to treated wild-type mice. For the p53+/- knockout mice to be used with contidence in drug safety studies, a further understanding of the metabolic capacity of these animals is needed.

Search for new heavy particles in the WZ0 final state in pp collisions at square root[s] = 1.8 TeV. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2002; 88:071806. Abstract
We present the first general search for new heavy particles, X, which decay via X --> WZ0 --> e(nu)+jj as a function of M(X) and Gamma(X) in pp collisions at square root[s] = 1.8 TeV. No evidence is found for production of X in 110 pb(-1) of data collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab. General cross section limits are set at the 95% C.L. as a function of mass and width of the new particle. The results are further interpreted as mass limits on the production of new heavy charged vector bosons which decay via W' --> WZ0 in an extended gauge model as a function of the width, Gamma(W'), and mixing factor between the W' and the standard model W bosons.

Abstract
We report a study of the decays B0 --> J/psiK(*)0pi(+)pi(-), which involve the creation of a uu or dd quark pair in addition to a b -->c(cs) decay. The data sample consists of 110 pb(-1) of pp collisions at square root[s] = 1.8 TeV collected by the CDF detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider during 1992-1995. We measure the branching fractions to be B(B0 --> J/psiK(*0)pi(+)pi(-)) = (6.6 +/- 1.9 +/- 1.1)x10(-4) and B(B0 --> J/psiK0pi(+)pi(-)) = (10.3 +/- 3.3 +/- 1.5)x10(-4). Evidence is seen for contributions from psi(2S)K(*)0, J/psiK0rho(0), J/psiK(*+)pi(-), and J/psiK1(1270).

Search for gluinos and scalar quarks in pp collisions at square root[s] = 1.8 TeV using the missing energy plus multijets signature. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2002; 88:041801. Abstract
We have performed a search for gluinos (g) and scalar quarks (q) in a data sample of 84 pb(-1) of pp collisions at square root[s] = 1.8 TeV, recorded by the Collider Detector at Fermilab. We investigate the final state of large missing transverse energy and three or more jets, a characteristic signature in R-parity-conserving supersymmetric models. The analysis has been performed "blind," in that the inspection of the signal region is made only after the predictions from standard model backgrounds have been calculated. Comparing the data with predictions of constrained supersymmetric models, we exclude gluino masses below 195 GeV/c2 (95% C.L.), independent of the squark mass. For the case m(q) approximately m(g), gluino masses below 300 GeV/c2 are excluded.

Abstract
We report a measurement of the strong coupling constant, alpha(s)(MZ), extracted from inclusive jet production in pp collisions at square root[s] = 1800 GeV. The QCD prediction for the evolution of alpha(s) with jet transverse energy ET is tested over the range 40<ET<450 GeV using ET for the renormalization scale. The data show good agreement with QCD in the region below 250 GeV. The value of alpha(s) at the mass of the Z0 boson averaged over the range 40<ET<250 GeV is found to be alpha(s)(MZ) = 0.1178+/-0.0001(stat)+0.0081(-0.0095)(expt. syst). The associated theoretical uncertainties are mainly due to the choice of renormalization scale ((+6%)(-4%)) and input parton distribution functions (5%).

Frequency of administration of recombinant human erythropoietin for anaemia of end-stage renal disease in dialysis patients. Cochrane Database Syst Rev 2002:CD003895. Abstract
BACKGROUND Although the benefits of recombinant human erythropoietin (rHu EPO) administration in dialysis patients have been demonstrated the optimal frequency regimen has not as yet been established. Treatment with rHu EPO is expensive, there is therefore a need for optimising the efficiency of its administration. OBJECTIVES The objectives of this review were to assess the effects of different frequency regimens of rHu EPO administration in dialysis patients in terms of i) effectiveness (correction of anaemia, quality of life and freedom from adverse events) ii) efficiency (optimal resource use) of different rHu EPO dose regimen policies. SEARCH STRATEGY We searched MEDLINE (1980 to May Week 3 2001), EMBASE (1984 to Week 24 2001), BIOSIS (1985 to January 1997), CINAHL (1982 to October 1997), The Cochrane Library (Issue 1, 1997), CHEMABS (1984 to November 1996), SIGLE (1980 to June 1996), CRIB (10th edition, 1995), UK NRR (14th consolidation, September 1996), RSC ( 1980 to February 1997), HealthSTAR (1995 to October 1997), IBSS (1984 to July 1997), NEED (July 1997) and reference lists of relevant articles. We contacted biomedical companies and investigators in the field and we hand searched Kidney International (including all supplements but excluding all conference proceedings except for 1994) July 1983 to May 1997 inclusive. The Internet was also searched on: August 1997. We had also identified some studies from a previous broad search for all randomised controlled trials (RCTs) relevant to the management of end-stage renal disease. Date of the most recent search: June 2001. SELECTION CRITERIA All randomised or quasi randomised controlled trials comparing different frequencies of rHu EPO administration in dialysis patients. Subgroup analyses were performed comparing haemodialysis and CAPD patients and also subcutaneous and intravenous administration. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS Only published data were used. Data were abstracted by a single investigator on to a standard form. The data abstracted were relevant to the predetermined outcome measures: measures of correction of anaemia, rHu EPO dose, quality of life measures, adverse events, number of withdrawals from study, mortality. Where appropriate, a summary relative risk (RR) was calculated for dichotomous data and a weighted mean difference (WMD) or standardised mean difference (SMD) for continuous data. MAIN RESULTS Eight studies met our inclusion criteria. When once a week administration was compared with twice weekly there was no significant difference in the ability to maintain the target haemoglobin (RR 1.00, 95% CI 0.42 to 2.40). Mean haemoglobin after twelve weeks of therapy was not different between the two groups (WMD -0.21g/dl, 95% CI -0.98 to 0.56). No difference was found in mean haemoglobin or haematocrit at the end of any studies which compared once with thrice weekly administration of rHu EPO (SMD -0.31, 95% CI -0.67 to 0.06). A single study which compared once with more that thrice weekly administration showed no significant difference in mean haemoglobin at the end of the maintenance phase (mean difference -0.2g/dl, 95% CI -0.65 to 0.25). The dosage of erythropoietin required by those on haemodialysis receiving rHu EPO once weekly was just significantly more (WMD 12.0 U/kg, 95% CI 0.24 to 23.76) than those receiving it twice weekly but the confidence interval is wide. No such difference was found for CAPD patients nor when the results were combined (WMD 5.15 U/kg, 95% CI -3.74 to 14.05). The result was not significant when comparing once weekly with thrice weekly administration (WMD 10.00 U/kg, 95% CI -80.87 to 100.87). There was no difference in the frequency of adverse events between any of the groups studies. REVIEWER'S CONCLUSIONS There is no significant difference between once weekly versus thrice weekly subcutaneous administration of rHu EPO. Once weekly administration of rHu EPO would require an additional 12U/kg/week for patients on haemodialysis, however this is based on one very small study. The cost of this additional hRu EPO nee, however this is based on one very small study. The cost of this additional hRu EPO needs to assessed, in particular with regard to patient preference and compliance.

Abstract
We present results of the first search for like-sign dilepton ( e(+/-)e(+/-), e(+/-)mu(+/-), mu(+/-)mu(+/-)) events associated with multijets and large missing energy using 106 pb(-1) of data in pp macro collisions at square root of s = 1.8 TeV collected during 1992-1995 by the CDF experiment. Finding no events that pass our selection, we examine pair production of gluinos (tilde g) and squarks (tilde q) in a constrained framework of the minimal supersymmetric standard model. At tan beta = 2 and mu = -800 GeV/c(2), we set 95% confidence level limits of M(tilde g)>221 GeV/c(2) for M(tilde g) approximately M(tilde q), and M(tilde q)>168 GeV/c(2) for M(tilde q)>>M(tilde g), both with small variation as a function of mu.
