Experience with the Jonas penile prosthesis in the treatment of impotence

The penile prosthesis has become established as a mode of therapy for organic and chronic psychogenic impotence. The Jonas type of penile prosthesis has been implanted into 10 patients and has achieved both functional success and excellent acceptance by the partner. Mechanical and pathological complications have a very low incidence. This penile prosthesis should be made available to carefully selected impotent patients who are deemed psychologically suitable candidates and in whom medical treatment has failed or is not indicated. It represents an important advance in the treatment of the male with erectile impotence.

Bacterial contamination of continuously infused enteral alimentation with needle catheter jejunostomy--clinical implications

The administration of elemental diet through fine needle catheter jejunostomy is becoming a common alternative route for postoperative feedings. The current review describes a septic syndrome which has been attributed to contamination of these feedings. The authors discuss a number of patient reports, as well as the etiology of the septic-like syndrome. Recommendations for the elimination of this syndrome are made and further review of patients during the course of changes in technique is described.

Psychological sequelae to elective sterilisation: a prospective study

A total of 201 women were interviewed four weeks before elective interval tubal sterilisation, of whom 190 (94.5%) were assessed again six months postoperatively and 193 (96.0%) 18 months postoperatively. Before sterilisation the prevalence of psychiatric morbidity as measured by the present state examination was 10.4% (21 patients), no greater than might be expected in a general population sample; six months after the operation the prevalence was significantly reduced to 4.7% (nine patients); and 18 months postoperatively it had returned almost to the preoperative value (9.3%; 18 patients). Postoperative psychosexual disturbance was rare, only 3% of patients reporting reduced enjoyment of sexual intercourse at either follow-up. Considerable regret was reported by only five patients (2.6%) six months after the operation and by eight (4.1%) 18 months after the operation; however, some dissatisfaction was reported by 15 patients (7.9%) at six months and 21 patients (10.9%) at 18 months. Postoperative psychiatric disturbance and dissatisfaction were largely associated with preoperative psychiatric disturbance. Thus there was no evidence that elective interval sterilisation increased the risk of psychiatric disturbance up to 18 months after the operation.

Use of indium-111 in antibody-dependent complement-mediated cytotoxicity assay for detection of B locus alloantigens on chicken lymphocytes

An antibody-dependent complement-mediated cytotoxicity assay has been devised to detect B locus alloantigens on the surface of peripheral blood lymphocytes. The assay utilizes unheated chicken antiserum and guinea pig complement, which cooperate to yield specific lysis of 111In-labeled target cells. Specific cell lysis appears to be mediated by the classical complement pathway and can be inhibited by heat inactivation of the guinea pig complement. Heat inactivation of the chicken antiserum results in partial inhibition of cell lysis which can be restored by the addition of a small amount of unheated normal chicken serum. The use of a 111In-oxine chelate was found to be a quick and efficient way to label chicken cells. It has a high labeling efficiency, localizes primarily in the cytoplasm, and is released specifically from dead cells in a form that cannot be reutilized. The highly sensitive detection of B locus alloantigens with this assay strongly suggest that it will be of equal value in the detection of other alloantigens, tumor-specific (transplantation) antigens, and differentiation antigens on the surface of chicken cells.

Reliability of bone marrow acid phosphatase as a parameter of metastatic prostatic cancer

The reliability of bone marrow acid phosphatase determination by a spectrophotometric assay and 2 immunochemical methods was evaluated in 40 patients: 20 men with known prostatic carcinoma and 20 men of comparable age without clinical evidence of prostatic cancer. The large percentage of falsely positive results obtained by the colorimetric assay invalidates this method as the sole parameter of metastatic prostatic carcinoma.

Double bond isomers of cloprostenol

The syntheses of five compounds isomeric with the potent luteolytic agent cloprostenol are described. These are the trans-delta 5, cis and trans-delta 4, cis-delta 6 (methyl ester) and cis-delta 13 analogues. The cis-delta 4 isomer is as potent as cloprostenol as a luteolytic agent in hamsters but the others are markedly less so.

Immunochemical identification of prostatic epithelial cells in culture

An indirect immunofluorescence technique for identifying prostatic acid phosphatase was used to evaluate primary prostatic cell cultures and established cell lines of prostatic origin. With the use of this technique, we positively identified acid phosphatase immunochemically of prostatic origin in cell lines EB 33 and MA 160. Other cell lines showing positive immunofluorescence reactions include H 494, H 575, and DU 145.

Organophosphorus compounds. XVI. 2-(N-Dialkylamino)alkyldiphenylphosphines, phosphine oxides and sulphides as analogues of methadone

A series of 2-(N-dialkylamino)ethyldiphenylphosphine oxides and sulphides was prepared by the addition of a secondary amine to diphenylvinylphosphine oxide, or the phosphine sulphide, respectively. Similarly, a series of 2-(N-dialkylamino)propyldiphenylphosphine oxides was prepared from diphenylprop-1-enylphosphine oxide, or from diphenylprop-2-enylphosphine oxide which isomerized under the reaction conditions. Reduction of the 2-(N-dialkylamino)propyldiphenylphosphine oxides with trichlorosilane, and oxidation of the phosphines with sulphur, afforded the corresponding phosphine sulphides. ��� None of the compounds showed significant analgesic activity.
