Abstract
RATIONALE Metoprolol and amiodarone are common antiarrhythmic drugs used in clinics throughout the world. The taste and smell alterations induced by antiarrhythmic drugs remain uncommon throughout the world, with less than 10 reported cases. PATIENT CONCERNS In this case report, we describe a case of a 73-year-old female, diagnosed with arrhythmias, was treated for metoprolol. At the third week of metoprolol treatment, the patient noticed a qualitative change in her ability to smell, also called dysosmia. After the metoprolol was tapered, her ability to smell was recovered. However, her arrhythmia was getting worse and the patient was given amiodarone. After using amiodarone for about 2 weeks, the patient felt hypogeusia, or loss of taste sensation. DIAGNOSES The patient was diagnosed as dysosmia and taste disturbance induced by the antiarrhythmic drugs. INTERVENTIONS After noticed the side effects of the antiarrhythmic drugs, we asked the patient to abandon the drugs and have a radiofrequency ablation. OUTCOMES Her ability of smell and taste were recovered after withdrawing the antiarrhythmic drugs. Also, in the follow-up appointment, she reported no complaints of smell or taste anymore. LESSONS These rare sensory disorders induced by anti-arrhythmic drugs were less documented in past literature. Our case report describes a patient with an arrhythmia who suffered reversible dysosmia and hypogeusia after taking metoprolol and amiodarone, respectively. We conclude that smell and taste disorders should be made aware to patients during the anti-arrhythmic treatment, helping to promote the safety of patients and drug compliance.

Abstract
AIM The aim of this study was to survey the ability of nursing students to obtain, appraise and understand health information and its influencing factors among undergraduate nursing students in a medical university in Chongqing, China. DESIGN A cross-sectional survey. METHOD The sample was obtained using stratified sampling methods. We used the internationally validated Health Literacy Questionnaire. Six hundred and fifteen (76.88%) of 800 nursing students completed participated anonymous questionnaires that measured their ability to obtain, appraise and understand health information. RESULTS Mean scores of nursing students to obtain, appraise and understand health information were 17.13, 13.07 and 17.78 respectively. Academic level, parental educational level and socioeconomic status were significantly associated with scores in obtaining, appraising and understanding health information.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hemorrhagic transformation (HT) is a common and natural complication after acute ischemic stroke. The only FDA-approved treatment so far for acute ischemic stroke is rapid reperfusion with recombinant tissue plasminogen activator (rtPA). Although it has been shown to exaggerate the risk and severity of HT and to be associated with increased morbidity and mortality. OBJECTIVE The aim of this review is to discuss the multifactorial pathophysiology of hemorrhagic transformation, promising interventional targets, and pharmacological treatment options. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION Understanding HT is essential to restore cerebral blood flow to ischemic brain by reperfusion therapy without causing this complication and additional brain injury. Therefore methods for the prevention and treatment of HT are needed. Although experimental studies showed promising results, clinical translation remains unsatisfactory to date.

Abstract
Finding ways to reduce tobacco and alcohol consumption among adolescents has been a major public health challenge in China. In relation to this issue, the current study evaluated the changes in the sociodemographic factors of tobacco and alcohol consumption among Chinese adolescents who are 12–18 years old. Trends in sociodemographic factors associated with tobacco and alcohol consumption were investigated based on the 2004–2011 China Health and Nutrition Survey data. Questionnaires that extracted data on tobacco and alcohol consumption (i.e., prior experience of smoking cigarettes and drinking alcoholic beverages) were distributed. Additional variables (e.g., age, residence, gender, etc.) were used in the analyses. Firth penalized logistic regression was conducted with drinking and smoking status variables as the dependent variables. Male adolescents were more inclined to smoke in 2004, 2006, 2009, and 2011 (p < 0.05 for all). Adolescents aged 15–16 years were more inclined to smoke compared with those aged 12–14 years in 2004, 2006, and 2011 (p < 0.05 for all). Among adolescents aged 15–18 years, older ones were more inclined to not smoke in 2004 (odds ratio (OR) = 0.531, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.343–0.821). Adolescents who did not attend school were more inclined to smoke in 2004, 2006, 2009, and 2011 (p < 0.05 for all). Adolescents who were drinkers were more inclined to smoke in 2004, 2006, 2009, and 2011 (p < 0.05 for all). Male adolescents were more likely to drink in 2004, 2006, and 2009 (p < 0.05 for all). In 2006 and 2009, adolescents aged 15–16 years were more inclined to drink compared with those aged 12–14 years (p < 0.05 for all). Among adolescents aged 15–18 years, older ones were less inclined to drink in 2004 (OR = 0.719, 95% CI 0.527–0.980) and 2006 (OR = 0.716, 95% CI 0.527–0.972). Adolescents who smoked were more likely to drink in 2004, 2006, 2009, and 2011 (p < 0.05 for all). The prevalence of tobacco and alcohol consumption among adolescents has not changed significantly. The current study identified adolescent high-risk groups for tobacco and alcohol consumption.

Abstract
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) affects millions of people in China each year. TBI has a high mortality and often times a serious prognosis. The causative mechanisms of TBI during development and recovery from an injury remain vague, leaving challenges for the medical community to provide treatment options that improve prognosis and provide an optimal recovery. Biological gaseous molecules including nitric oxide (NO), carbon monoxide (CO), hydrogen sulfide (H2S), and molecular hydrogen (H2) have been found to play critical roles in physiological and pathological conditions in mammals. Accumulating evidence has found that these gaseous molecules can execute neuroprotection in many central nervous system (CNS) conditions due to their highly permeable properties allowing them to enter the brain. Considering the complicated mechanisms and the serious prognosis of TBI, effective and adequate therapeutic approaches are urgently needed. These four gaseous molecules can be potential attractive therapeutic intervention on TBI. In this review, we will present a comprehensive overview on the role of these four biological gasses in the development of TBI and their potential therapeutic applications.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Surgical brain injury (SBI) which occurs due to the inadvertent injury inflicted to surrounding brain tissue during neurosurgical procedures can potentiate blood brain barrier (BBB) permeability, brain edema and neurological deficits. This study investigated the role of neurotrophin 3 (NT-3) and tropomyosin related kinase receptor C (TrkC) against brain edema and neurological deficits in a rat SBI model. METHODS SBI was induced in male Sprague Dawley rats by partial right frontal lobe resection. Temporal expression of endogenous NT-3 and TrkC was evaluated at 6, 12, 24 and 72 h after SBI. SBI rats received recombinant NT-3 which was directly applied to the brain surgical injury site using gelfoam. Brain edema and neurological function was evaluated at 24 and 72 h after SBI. Small interfering RNA (siRNA) for TrkC and Rap1 was administered via intracerebroventricular injection 24 h before SBI. BBB permeability assay and western blot was performed at 24 h after SBI. RESULTS Endogenous NT-3 was decreased and TrkC expression increased after SBI. Topical administration of recombinant NT-3 reduced brain edema, BBB permeability and improved neurological function after SBI. Recombinant NT-3 administration increased the expression of phosphorylated Rap1 and Erk5. The protective effect of NT-3 was reversed with TrkC siRNA but not Rap1 siRNA. CONCLUSIONS Topical application of NT-3 reduced brain edema, BBB permeability and improved neurological function after SBI. The protective effect of NT-3 was possibly mediated via TrkC dependent activation of Erk5.

Abstract
Stroke is one of the most devastating diseases worldwide. In recent years, a great number of studies have focused on the effects of microRNAs (miRNAs) on stroke and the results demonstrated that the expressions of miRNAs are associated with the prognosis of stroke. In the present study, we review relevant articles regarding miRNAs and stroke and will explain the complex link between both. The miRNAs participate extensively in the pathophysiology following the stroke, including apoptosis, neuroinflammation, oxidative stress, blood–brain barrier (BBB) disruption and brain edema. The information about the stroke–miRNA system may be helpful for therapeutic and diagnostic methods in stroke treatment.

Abstract
Mammalian Sterile20-like (MST) kinases are located upstream in the mitogen-activated protein kinase pathway, and play an important role in cell proliferation, differentiation, renewal, polarization and migration. Generally, five MST kinases exist in mammalian signal transduction pathways, including MST1, MST2, MST3, MST4 and YSK1. The central nervous system (CNS) is a sophisticated entity that takes charge of information reception, integration and response. Recently, accumulating evidence proposes that MST kinases are critical in the development of disease in different systems involving the CNS. In this review, we summarized the signal transduction pathways and interacting proteins of MST kinases. The potential biological function of each MST kinase and the commonly reported MST-related diseases in the neural system are also reviewed. Further investigation of MST kinases and their interaction with CNS diseases would provide the medical community with new therapeutic targets for human diseases.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Women are a dominant force in the family's diet and nutrition in China. The shortterm effects of the 2008 Sichuan Earthquake were found. However, the long-term effects of the 2008 Sichuan Earthquake on the food safety, energy, and intake frequency of women remain unclear. This study analyzed the effects of the 2008 Sichuan Earthquake on the dietary behaviors of women one year after the earthquake. METHODS AND STUDY DESIGN In this cross-sectional study, a total of 207 women were selected using the proportional sampling method. Among them, 91 were from the earthquake-affected area and 116 were from the non-affected area. RESULTS Women from the earthquake-affected area paid significantly more attention to health, diet, food and water safety after the earthquake (p<0.05 for each category) when compared with those from the non-affected area. Women from the earthquake-affected area also had a significantly higher proportion of adequate understanding of low-energy food, properly separated their raw food from cooked food, ate high-energy food, and picky eating habits (p<0.05 for each category) than those from the non-affected area. In addition, women from the earthquake-affected area were more likely to adhere to the 2007 Chinese Food Guide Pagoda (FGP) guidelines for eating rice than those from the non-affected area (OR=2.25, 95% CI [1.13, 4.51]). CONCLUSION The female survivors of the 2008 Sichuan Earthquake preferred high-energy food, paid more attention to food safety, and were more likely to adhere to FGP when compared to those that did not undergo the same tragedy.

Abstract
Exposure to diesel exhaust (DE) from vehicles and industry is hazardous and affects proper function of organ systems. DE can interfere with normal physiology after acute and chronic exposure to particulate matter (PM). Exposure leads to potential systemic disease processes in the central nervous, visual, hematopoietic, respiratory, cardiovascular, and renal systems. In this review, we give an overview of the epidemiological evidence supporting the harmful effects of diesel exhaust, and the numerous animal studies conducted to investigate the specific pathophysiological mechanisms behind DE exposure. Additionally, this review includes a summary of studies that used biomarkers as an indication of biological plausibility, and also studies evaluating new technology diesel exhaust (NTDE) and its systemic effects. Lastly, this review includes new approaches to improving DE emissions, and emphasizes the importance of ongoing study in this field of environmental health.

Abstract
Background: Arthritis is a common disease in China, but few studies have been conducted to explore the associated health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and its influencing factors in Chongqing, China. This study aimed to explore the association of arthritis and HRQoL and probe factors affecting HRQoL among arthritis patients. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted in Chongqing, China. A total of 1224 adults were included in the analysis. Medical Outcomes Study Short Form 36 Health Survey (SF-36) was used to measure HRQoL. Multiple linear regression models (stepwise) and covariance analysis models were used to examine the association of arthritis with HRQoL and analyze factors associated with HRQoL among arthritis patients. Results: Participants with arthritis had poorer HRQoL than those without. Among arthritis patients, the female was associated with a poorer state of physical functioning (p < 0.05); unemployed patients had a poorer state of role-physical than employed patients (p < 0.05); low average monthly income was associated with a poorer state of physical functioning (p < 0.01); childhood non-breastfeeding history was associated with a poorer state of social functioning (p < 0.01); average or dissatisfied attitude to current living conditions was associated with a poorer state of vitality and mental health (p < 0.05 for all); moreover, poor or general appetite was associated with a poorer state of role-physical, general health, social functioning, bodily pain, and role-emotional (p < 0.01 for all). Conclusions: Arthritis patients have worse HRQoL than those without in the Chinese population. Female, low socioeconomic status, childhood non-breastfeeding history, average or dissatisfied attitude to current living conditions and poor or general appetite were associated with poorer state of HRQoL among Chinese arthritis patients.

Abstract
Kindergarten teachers play an important role in providing kindergarten children with education on nutrition. However, few studies have been published on nutrition-related knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) of Chinese kindergarten teachers. This study aimed to assess the nutrition-related knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) of kindergarten teachers in Chongqing, China. Thus, a cross-sectional survey was conducted using a structured KAP model questionnaire administered to 222 kindergarten teachers, who were senior teachers from 80 kindergartens in 19 districts and 20 counties in Chongqing. Multiple regression analysis was used to analyze the influential factors. Among the participants, 54.2% were familiar with simple nutrition-related knowledge; only 9.9% of them were satisfied with their knowledge of childhood nutrition; and 97.7% of them had a positive attitude to learn nutrition-related knowledge. Only 38.7% of the participants had attended pediatric nutrition knowledge courses or training. Multiple regression analysis confirmed significant independent effects on the nutrition knowledge score (p < 0.0001) of respondents on age, type of residence, type of kindergarten, body mass index(BMI), professional training of kindergarten teachers, behavior of having ever participated in childhood nutrition education knowledge courses or training, and behavior of having ever paid attention to children’s nutrition knowledge. The model indicated that independent variables explained 45.4% (adjusted R2) of the variance found in the knowledge scores of respondents. While there were low levels of nutrition knowledge and training, it was still encouraging to note that there were positive attitudes towards acquiring nutrition-related knowledge among kindergarten teachers in Chongqing, China. These findings provide some implications that necessary training measures need to be carried out to improve the nutrition-related knowledge level among kindergarten teachers in China.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Vasovagal syncope (VVS) is characterized by hypotension and bradycardia followed by lowering of cerebral blood flow. Remote limb ischemic preconditioning (RIPC) is well documented to provide cardio- and neuroprotection as well as to improve cerebral blood flow. We hypothesized that RIPC will provide protection against VVS-induced hypotension, bradycardia, and cerebral hypoperfusion. Second, because endothelial nitric oxide synthase has been reported as a mediator of cerebral blood flow control, we hypothesized that the mechanism by which RIPC primes the vasculature against VVS is via the α1-adrenoceptor-protein kinase Cε-endothelial nitric oxide synthase pathway. METHODS AND RESULTS We utilized sinusoidal galvanic vestibular stimulation in rats as a model of VVS. RIPC attenuated the lowerings of mean arterial pressure, heart rate, and cerebral blood flow caused by sinusoidal galvanic vestibular stimulation, as well as improving behavior during, and recovery after, stimulation. RIPC induced elevated serum norepinephrine, increased expression of brain α1-adrenoceptors, and reduced brain expression of norepinephrine transporter 1. Antagonizing adrenoceptors and norepinephrine transporter 1 prevented RIPC protection of cerebral perfusion during sinusoidal galvanic vestibular stimulation. CONCLUSIONS Taken together, this study indicates that RIPC may be a potential therapy that can prevent VVS pathophysiology, decrease syncopal episodes, and reduce the injuries associated with syncopal falls. Furthermore, the α1-adrenoceptor-protein kinase Cε-endothelial nitric oxide synthase pathway may be a therapeutic target for regulating changes in cerebral blood flow.

Abstract
Neuroinflammation is an essential mechanism involved in the pathogenesis of subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH)-induced brain injury. Recently, Netrin-1 (NTN-1) is well established to exert anti-inflammatory property in non-nervous system diseases through inhibiting infiltration of neutrophil. The present study was designed to investigate the effects of NTN-1 on neuroinflammation, and the potential mechanism in a rat model of SAH. Two hundred and ninety-four male Sprague Dawley rats (weight 280-330 g) were subjected to the endovascular perforation model of SAH. Recombinant human NTN-1 (rh-NTN-1) was administered intravenously. Small interfering RNA (siRNA) of NTN-1 and UNC5B, and a selective PPARγ antagonist bisphenol A diglycidyl ether (BADGE) were applied. Post-SAH evaluations included neurobehavioral function, brain water content, Western blot analysis, and immunohistochemistry. Our results showed that endogenous NTN-1 and its receptor UNC5B level were increased after SAH. Administration of rh-NTN-1 reduced brain edema, ameliorated neurological impairments, and suppressed microglia activation after SAH, which were concomitant with PPARγ activation, inhibition of NFκB, and decrease in TNF-α, IL-6, and ICAM-1, as well as myeloperoxidase (MPO). Knockdown of endogenous NTN-1 increased expression of pro-inflammatory mediators and MPO, and aggravated neuroinflammation and brain edema. Moreover, knockdown of UNC5B using specific siRNA and inhibition of PPARγ with BADGE blocked the protective effects of rh-NTN-1. In conclusion, our findings indicated that exogenous rh-NTN-1 treatment attenuated neuroinflammation and neurological impairments through inhibiting microglia activation after SAH in rats, which is possibly mediated by UNC5B/PPARγ/NFκB signaling pathway. Exogenous NTN-1 may be a novel therapeutic agent to ameliorating early brain injury via its anti-inflammation effect.

Abstract
The NLRP3 inflammasome functions as a crucial component of the inflammatory response in early brain injury (EBI) after subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). However, the mechanisms underlying the activation of NLRP3 inflammasome has not been well elucidated. In this study, we hypothesized the RIP1-RIP3-DRP1 pathway was involved in the activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome following SAH. SAH was induced by endovascular perforation in rats. Necrostatin-1 (Nec-1) or mitochondrial division inhibitor (Mdivi-1) was administered 1h after SAH by intraperitoneal injection. SAH grade, neurological function, brain water content, Western blot, ROS assay, immunofluorescence and transmission electron microscopy were performed. SAH led to the upregulation of RIP1, RIP3, phosphorylated DRP1 and NLRP3 inflammasome. Nec-1 treatment reduced RIP1, RIP3, phosphorylated DRP1 and NLRP3 inflammasome, subsequently alleviated brain edema and neurological deficits at 24h following SAH. The treatment with Mdivi-1 inhibited the expression of DRP1 protein, attenuated mitochondria damage and the generation of ROS, inhibited NLRP3 inflammasome and ameliorated brain edema and neurological deficits at 24h after SAH. The activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome in EBI after SAH was mediated by RIP1-RIP3-DRP1 pathway. Nec-1 and Mdivi-1 can inhibit inflammation and improve neurological function after SAH.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to assess the association between exposure to the Great Chinese Famine (1959-1961) during early life and hypertension in adulthood. METHODS From July to September 2009, 1224 eligible adults were recruited in a cross-sectional survey using a multi-stage stratified random sampling method in Chongqing China. A questionnaire was used to collect information of hypertension and sociodemographic factors. Participants were categorized as childhood, fetal, and none exposure to famine based on the date of birth. RESULTS Of the sample, 12.3% reported having hypertension. The prevalence of hypertension varied by famine status: 11.9% in childhood exposure, 16.1% in fetal exposure, and 10.2% in non-exposure group. After adjusting for sociodemographic and lifestyle factors, compared with non-exposure group, fetal exposure group had an increased likelihood of having hypertension with odds ratio of 1.79 (95%CI 1.13-2.84). Although there was no significant gender and famine interaction, the positive association between famine exposure and hypertension was stronger among women than men. CONCLUSION Fetal exposure to the Chinese famine may be associated with an increased risk of hypertension in adulthood in women [corrected].

Abstract
Despite years of effort, intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) remains the most devastating form of stroke with more than 40% 30-day mortality worldwide. Hematoma expansion (HE), which occurs in one third of ICH patients, is strongly predictive of worse prognosis and potentially preventable if high-risk patients were identified in the early phase of ICH. In this review, we summarize data from recent studies on HE prediction and classify those potential indicators into four categories: clinical (severity of consciousness disturbance; blood pressure; blood glucose at and after admission); laboratory (hematologic parameters of coagulation, inflammation and microvascular integrity status), radiographic (interval time from ICH onset; baseline volume, shape and density of hematoma; intraventricular hemorrhage; especially the spot sign and modified spot sign) and integrated predictors (9-point or 24-point clinical prediction algorithm and PREDICT A/B). We discuss those predictors’ underlying pathophysiology in HE and present opportunities to develop future therapeutic strategies.

Abstract
In this study, we investigated the role of vitamin D3 (VitD3) on endogenous osteopontin (OPN), a neuroprotective glycoprotein, after subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). The endovascular perforation SAH model in Sprague-Dawley rats was used to study the effect of intranasal VitD3 (30 ng/kg) before (Pre-SAH + VitD3) and after (Post-SAH + VitD3) subarachnoid hemorrhage. Vitamin D3 (30, 60, 120 ng/kg/day) increased more than one fold endogenous OPN expression in astrocytes and endothelial cells of rat brain. Vitamin D3 significantly decreased brain edema and Evans blue extravasation. In addition, neurobehavioral scores were significantly higher in Pre-SAH + VitD3, but partly higher in Post-SAH + VitD3, group compared with SAH group. These protective effects of vitamin D3 were completely attenuated by intracerebroventricular injection of transcription inhibitor Actinomycin D and significantly inhibited by small interfering ribonucleic acid (siRNA) for vitamin D receptor and OPN in Pre-SAH + VitD3 rats. OPN expression was significantly higher in Pre-SAH + VitD3 rats, specifically A and C, but not B, isomers were upregulated in the astrocytes, leading to CD44 splicing, and P-gp glycosylation in brain endothelial cells. The results show that intranasal vitamin D3 attenuates blood-brain barrier (BBB) disruption through endogenous upregulation of OPN and subsequent CD44 and P-gp glycosylation signals in brain endothelial cells. Furthermore, this study identifies a novel strategy for the cost-effective management of subarachnoid hemorrhage.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Netrin-1 (NTN-1) has been established to be a novel intrinsic regulator of blood-brain barrier (BBB) maintenance. This study was carried out to investigate the potential roles of exogenous NTN-1 in preserving BBB integrity after experimental subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) as well as the underlying mechanisms of its protective effects. METHODS AND RESULTS A total of 309 male Sprague-Dawley rats were subjected to an endovascular perforation model of SAH. Recombinant NTN-1 was administered intravenously 1 hour after SAH induction. NTN-1 small interfering RNA or Deleted in Colorectal Cancer small interfering RNA was administered intracerebroventricular at 48 hours before SAH. Focal adhesion kinase inhibitor was administered by intraperitoneal injection at 1 hour prior to SAH. Neurological scores, brain water content, BBB permeability, RhoA activity, Western blot, and immunofluorescence staining were evaluated. The expression of endogenous NTN-1 and its receptor Deleted in Colorectal Cancer were increased after SAH. Administration of exogenous NTN-1 significantly reduced brain water content and BBB permeability and ameliorated neurological deficits at 24 and 72 hours after SAH. Exogenous NTN-1 treatment significantly promoted phosphorylated focal adhesion kinase activation and inhibited RhoA activity, as well as upregulated the expression of ZO-1 and Occludin. Conversely, depletion of endogenous NTN-1 aggravated BBB breakdown and neurological impairments at 24 hours after SAH. The protective effects of NTN-1 at 24 hours after SAH were also abolished by pretreatment with Deleted in Colorectal Cancer small interfering RNA and focal adhesion kinase inhibitor. CONCLUSIONS NTN-1 treatment preserved BBB integrity and improved neurological functions through a Deleted in Colorectal Cancer/focal adhesion kinase/RhoA signaling pathway after SAH. Thus, NTN-1 may serve as a promising treatment to alleviate early brain injury following SAH.
