Abstract
This study presents a sequential radiochemical separation method for uranium and thorium isotopes using a novel Sequential Injection Analysis (SIA) system with an extraction chromatographic resin (UTEVA). After the separation, uranium and thorium isotopes have been quantified by using alpha-particle spectrometry. The developed method has been tested by analyzing an intercomparison sample (phosphogypsum sample) from International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) with better recoveries for uranium and thorium than the obtained by using a classical method (93% for uranium using the new methodology and 82% with the classical method, and in the case of thorium the recoveries were 70% for the semi-automated method and 60% for the classical strategy). Afterwards, the method was successfully applied to different Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material (NORM) samples, in particular sludge samples taken from a drinking water treatment plant (DWTP) and also sediment samples taken from an area of influence of the dicalcium phosphate (DCP) factory located close to the Ebro river reservoir in Flix (Catalonia). The obtained results have also been compared with the obtained by the classical method and from that comparison it has been demonstrated that the presented strategy is a good alternative to existing methods offering some advantages as minimization of sample handling, reduction of solvents volume and also an important reduction of the time per analysis.

Abstract
The objective of drinking water treatment plants (DWTP) is to supply the population with tap water that is in optimal condition and in compliance with water quality regulations. In the DWTP of L'Ampolla (Tarragona, Spain), slightly high values of gross alpha activity and the amount of salts in the raw water have been observed. Conventional treatment has reduced these levels only minimally. This study tested a tertiary treatment based on reverse osmosis is tested in an industrial pilot plant (240 m3/day) The efficiency of this pilot plant to reduce the gross alpha and beta activities and the activity of some individual radioisotopes (U(238), U(234), U(235) and Ra(226)) was tested. Results showed that the elimination of alpha emitters was greater than 90%, whereas the elimination of beta emitters was about 35%. Overall, the data provided evidence that the pilot plant is effective for removing different radionuclides that can be present in the incoming water treated. Therefore, tertiary treatment based on reverse osmosis has a positive effect in water quality.

Abstract
An analytical method has been developed that allows the simultaneous determination of five benzotriazole (BTRs), four benzothiazole (BTs) and five benzenesulfonamide (BSAs) derivates. The method is based on tandem solid-phase extraction (SPE) with Oasis HLB followed by a clean-up step with Florisil. The chromatographic analysis was performed in less than 15min and detection was carried out with a triple quadrupole mass analyser operating in multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) mode. A comparison was performed between Oasis HLB and Oasis MAX sorbents for the solid-phase extraction, with Oasis HLB being the sorbent that gave the highest recoveries, ranging between 75% and 106%, depending on the compound and the matrix analysed. The proposed clean-up with Florisil sorbent reduced the matrix effect to below 20%. The repeatability (%RSD, 50-3000ng/L, n=3) of the method was less than 15% for all of the compounds in all of the matrices. The limits of detection (LODs) achieved ranged from 1ng/L for BTR in river water up to 100ng/L for BT in influent sewage. All of the compounds were determined in environmental waters such as river water and sewage. The highest concentrations determined corresponded to influent sewage samples in which the sum of concentrations for all compounds were between 4.6μg/L and 8.0μg/L. These concentrations were slightly reduced in secondary effluent and tertiary effluent sewage. Moreover, samples from tertiary effluent sewage based on ultra-filtration membrane treatments were also analysed and preliminary results seem to indicate that these treatments may be most effective for removing BTR, BT and BSA derivates.

Abstract
N-nitrosamines are potentially hazardous pollutants, classified as probable carcinogenic and mutagenic by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). In this paper, the presence of these pollutants was studied in air samples taken at different locations of Tarragona (urban and harbour). As a result, a reliable method has been developed for determining N-nitrosamines and nicotine based on pressurised liquid extraction (PLE) and gas chromatography-(chemical ionisation) ion trap tandem mass spectrometry (GC-(CI)MS/MS). The chromatographic analysis enables the determination of these compounds in less than 13 min with total separation and good resolution between the compounds. Recovery values were higher than 80% for most of the compounds and the repeatability of the method was under 18% (5 ng m(-3), %RSD, n=4). MDLs were between 0.1 ng m(-3) (NMor and NPip) and 2 ng m(-3) (NMEA). NMor, NPyr, NPip and nicotine were the most frequent compounds in urban and harbour samples at concentration levels between 0.3 ng m(-3) (NPyr) and 12.5 ng m(-3) (nicotine) and between 0.13 ng m(-3) (NPyr) and 3.8 ng m(-3) (nicotine), respectively.

Abstract
Uranium and thorium isotopes from sludge samples taken from an area of influence of a dicalcium phosphate factory, located close to the Ebro River reservoir in Flix, and from mineral raw materials (coal and phosphate) which were deposited in Tarragona Harbour (Catalonia) have been measured. To do that, several procedures to determine these isotopes have been applied and compared in terms of accuracy, precision and total analysis time. In particular, digestion procedures, such as one based on conventional acidic digestion or another based on the use of microwave digestion, have been tested. Moreover, different radiochemical separation procedures have been applied. In this regard, one method based on liquid-liquid extraction using TBP/Xylene and another based on the use of extraction chromatography using UTEVA resins have been compared. Firstly, the different proposed methods were tested by analyzing a phosphogypsum sediment and a moss-soil sample from two different intercomparison exercises. The microwave digestion - UTEVA method provided the best results (recoveries higher than 82% for uranium and thorium isotopes) and was then applied to the NORM samples. The obtained results showed that the higher uranium and thorium activities values were found in phosphate raw material and in the more superficial samples located in sludge sediments next to the dicalcium phosphate factory.

Abstract
In this study, in-line solid-phase extraction (SPE) was used as an enrichment technique in combination with CE for the preconcentration and separation of 2-ethylidene-1,5-dimethyl-3,3-diphenylpyrrolidine (EDDP), cocaine (COC), codeine (COD) and 6-acetylmorphine (6AM). The separation buffer (BGE) used was 80 mM disodium phosphate anhydrous and 6 mM of HCl (final BGE pH of 3). The SPE extractor consists of a small segment of capillary filled with Oasis HLB sorbent and inserted into the inlet section of the electrophoretic capillary. Different parameters affecting preconcentration were evaluated, such as sample pH, the volume of the elution plug and sample injection time. The detection limits (LODs) reached for standard samples by in-line SPE-CE-UV ranged between 50 and 200 ng/L, with sensitivity enhancement factors ranging from 2300 to 5300. Reproducibility values (expressed in terms of relative standard deviation) were below 7.6% for standard samples. This is a simple and an effective method for the determination of the studied drugs of abuse and their metabolites. The applicability of the developed method was demonstrated in tap and river water samples which were directly analyzed without any off-line pretreatment. Analytical parameters were evaluated and LODs were between 70 and 270 ng/L with relative recoveries between 85 and 97%.

Abstract
This study focuses on characterising the risk of exposure to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) by means of inhalation in people living in the vicinity of the largest chemical production site in the Mediterranean area. Eighty-six VOCs were initially selected for this study based on their adverse environmental and health effects. The monitoring campaign was conducted for 276 days in three different locations around the chemical site. The analytical method used for the characterisation was based on European standard method EN-14662-2, which consists of the active sampling of air for 24h in charcoal tubes, followed by extraction with carbon disulphide and GC-MS analysis. Forty-four VOCs with toxicological data available concerning their carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic health effects were quantified during the monitoring campaign. None of the quantified VOCs showed average concentrations exceeding their chronic reference concentrations and, therefore, no non-carcinogenic health effects are expected as a result of this exposure. However, the global average cancer risk due to VOC exposure in the area (3.3×10(-4)) was found to be above the values recommended by the WHO and USEPA. The influence of the analytical method was also evaluated by comparing cancer risk estimates using a thermal desorption (TD) method based on method EN-14662-1. The results of the 24-h samples for the solvent extraction method were compared with the average of 12 daily samples of 2-h for the TD method for 24 sampling days. Although the global estimated lifetime cancer risk was statistically comparable for both methods, some differences were found in individual VOC risks. To our knowledge, this is the first study that estimates the carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks posed by the inhalation of VOCs in people living near a chemical site of this size, and compares the estimated cancer risk obtained using two different standard analytical methods.

Abstract
The growing demand on water resources has increased the interest in wastewater reclamation for multiple end-use applications such as indirect and direct potable reuse. In these applications, the removal of organic micropollutants is of a greater concern than in conventional wastewater treatment. This article presents a collection of data of trace organic micropollutants in an urban wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) in North East Spain using reverse osmosis (RO) membrane treatment. The RO rejection values of the organic molecules studied with a wide range of solute size and hydrophobicity were determined. Several chromatographic methods monitoring different endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs), pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) were used. Results indicated that secondary effluents from this Spanish WWTP contained most of the studied organic compounds indicating incomplete removal of organics in the conventional treatment of the plant. However, the rejection of most micropollutants was high for all three RO membrane types (low energy, high rejection, fouling resistant) tested. It was observed that some selected micropollutants were less efficiently removed (e.g. the small and polar and the more hydrophobic) and the molecular weight and membrane material influenced removal efficiencies.

Abstract
Industrial waste containing radioactive isotopes (from U-decay series) was released into Ebro river basin due to the activity of a dicalcium phosphate (DCP) plant for a period of more than two decades. Gross alpha, gross beta, (40)K, (226)Ra and (210)Pb activities were determined in several sludge samples taken at different depths from different points in the area of influence of the DCP plant located in Flix. Samples were collected from two different zones: one in front of the DCP plant and the second in front of a wastewater treatment plant installed several years after the DCP plant. The data obtained verify the influence of industrial DCP production on radioactivity levels present in the area.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Inhalation is one of the main means of human exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) because of their ubiquitous presence in the atmosphere. However, most studies have considered only PAHs found in the particle phase and have omitted the contribution of the gas-phase PAHs to the risk. OBJECTIVE We estimated the lifetime lung cancer risk from PAH exposure by inhalation in people living next to the largest chemical site in Southern Europe and the Mediterranean area. METHODS We determined 18 PAHs in the atmospheric gas and particle phase. We monitored the PAHs for 1 year in three locations near the chemical site in different seasons. We used toxic equivalence factors to calculate benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) equivalents (BaP-eq) for individual PAHs and applied the World Health Organization unit risk (UR) for BaP (UR = 8.7 × 10-5) to estimate lifetime cancer risks due to PAH exposures. RESULTS We observed some spatial and seasonal variability in PAH concentrations. The contribution of gas-phase PAHs to the total BaP-eq value was between 34% and 86%. The total estimated average lifetime lung cancer risk due to PAH exposure in the study area was 1.2 × 10-4. CONCLUSIONS The estimated risk was higher than values recommended by the World Health Organization and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency but lower than the threshold value of 10-3 that is considered an indication of definite risk according to similar risk studies. The results also showed that risk may be underestimated if the contributions of gas-phase PAHs are not considered.
