Abstract
INTRODUCTION Bosentan is an endothelin-1 receptor antagonist with anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antiproliferative effects. We aimed to evaluate its effects on lung tissue in a pulmonary contusion (PC) model. MATERIALS AND METHODS The rats were randomly divided into five groups: PC3: PC evaluated on the 3rd day (n = 8), PC-B3: PC enteral bosentan 100 mg/kg/day, for 3 days (n = 8), PC7: PC evaluated on the 7th day (n = 7), PC-B7: PC 7 days bosentan 100 mg/kg/day, for 7 days (n = 8), C: control (n = 6). Unilateral lung contusion was created by dropping a metal weight onto the chest. The rats were sacrificed on the 3rd or the 7th days. The lung tissue was evaluated histopathologically for alveolar edema, congestion, and leukocyte infiltration, biochemically for malondialdehyde (MDA), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and nitric oxide (NO) levels, and immunohistochemically for inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS), and apoptosis scores. RESULTS Alveolar edema, congestion, and leukocyte infiltration scores were increased in all groups compared with the control group (p < 0.05) and decreased in bosentan-treated groups compared with the relevant nontreated groups (p < 0.05). Fibrosis was observed only in PC7 and PC-B7 groups. Bosentan did not have any effect on fibrosis development. iNOS and eNOS levels were higher in all groups compared with the control (p < 0.05) without a difference in the nontreated versus treated groups (p > 0.05). Bosentan treatment caused decreased MDA and increased SOD levels in comparison to the nontreated groups (p < 0.05). Tissue NO levels did not show any significant difference among groups. PC groups had higher levels of apoptosis compared with the control group (p < 0.05). The degree of apoptosis decreased in bosentan-treated groups compared with the nontreated groups (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION PC causes progressive lung tissue damage. Bosentan reduced leukocyte infiltration and alveolar edema and congestion caused by PC. It also decreased MDA levels and increased SOD levels. Bosentan prevents tissue damage by inhibiting acute inflammatory response and reduces oxidative stress secondary to inflammation. It has therapeutic effects on apoptosis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Despite the progress in the treatment of acute kidney injury (AKI), current curative approaches fail to provide adequate treatment. In this study, we aimed to investigate the possible protective effects of thymosin-β-4(Tβ4) on an ischemic AKI model in rats. METHODS Rats were randomly assigned into four groups (n = 8/group): The control group (sham-operated), the ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) group; renal ischemia (90 min) by infrarenal abdominal aortic occlusion followed by reperfusion (3 h), the Tβ4 + I/R group; treated with Tβ4 before I/R, and the I/Tβ4/R group; treated with Tβ4 just before reperfusion. Besides renal function determination (creatinine (Cr) and blood urea nitrogen (BUN)); histological evaluation was also conducted. Renal tissue caspase-9, matrix metalloproteinase (MMP-9) activities, and hyaluronan levels were measured. Additionally, renal tissue oxidative stress (lipid hydroperoxide, malondialdehyde, superoxide dismutase, glutathione, pro-oxidant-antioxidant balance, ferric reducing antioxidant power, nitric oxide), inflammation (tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin-1β, interleukin-6, nuclear factor-κβ) were evaluated. RESULTS I/R increased the level of caspase-9, MMP-9 activity, and hyaluronan (p < 0.001) and these were significantly decreased in both Tβ4 groups. Moreover, I/R led to increases in oxidative stress and inflammation parameters (p < 0.001) while the levels of antioxidants were decreased. Nevertheless, Tβ4 in both groups were able to restore oxidative stress and inflammation parameters. Furthermore, Tβ4 attenuated histologic injury caused by I/R (p < 0.01) and diminished serum urea-creatinine levels (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION These results suggest that Tβ4 has significant improving effects in ischemic acute kidney injury. This beneficial effect might be a result of the inhibition of extracellular matrix remodeling and apoptosis cascade via modulation in renal redox status and inflammation.

Abstract
Objective Eosinophil cationic protein (ECP) plays a significant role in the pathogenesis of atopic diseases such as allergic rhinitis (AR) and asthma. Using saliva as a diagnostic material is a non-invasive, simple method. Analysis of ECP in saliva was shown as an alternative diagnostic contribution in patients with asthma. In this study we aimed to assess a possible association between the levels of salivary ECP and the diagnosis of AR by comparing serum ECP and salivary ECP levels. Methods Thirty-five allergic rhinitis patients (study group) sensitive to Dermatophagoides farinae (D2) in skin prick test (SPT) and 35 nonallergic, SPT negative, healthy volunteers (control group) were included in the study. Salivary ECP, serum ECP and specific IgE D2 levels were measured. Results Distribution of age and gender were similar in the study and the control groups (p>0.05). Serum specific IgE D2 levels were significantly higher in the study group compared to the control group (p<0.001). ECP levels in saliva and serum did not show any significant difference in between study and control groups (p=0.738; p=0.796, respectively). No significant difference was found between the levels of ECP in between the serum and the saliva of study and control groups. (p=0.504; p=0.589, respectively). There was no significant correlation between saliva and serum ECP levels of both groups.(r=-0.191/p=0.114). Conclusion Serum and saliva ECP levels seem close to each other and were comparable in both groups, but we did not find any correlation between them Although we hypothesized that saliva ECP may be used as a non-invasive method for the diagnosis of AR, it seems that this parameter is not helpful in diagnosis of AR.

Abstract
To investigate whether the circulating miR-1 (microRNA-1) and miR-21 expression might be used in the diagnosis of heart failure (HF) and silent coronary artery disease (SCAD) in asymptomatic type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients and to explore the relationship of these miRs with N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) and galectin-3. One hundred thirty-five consecutive patients with T2DM and 45 matched control subjects were enrolled in the study. This study consisted of the following four groups: control group (mean age: 60.23 ± 6.27 years, female/male (F/M): 23/22); diabetic group (DM) (mean age: 61.50 ± 5.08, F/M: 23/22); DM + SCAD group (mean age: 61.61 ± 6.02, F/M: 20/25); and DM + acute HF group (mean age: 62.07 ± 5.26 years, F/M: 20/25). miR-1 was downregulated in the DM, CAD + DM and HF + DM groups by 0.54, 0.54, and 0.12 fold as compared with controls, respectively. The miR-1 levels were significantly lower in HF + DM than DM with 0.22 fold changes (p < 0.001); and in patients with CAD + DM group with 0.22 fold changes (p < 0.001). Similarly, miR-21 was overexpressed in patients with DM, CAD + DM, and HF + DM with 1.30, 1.79 and 2.21 fold changes as compared with controls, respectively. An interesting finding is that the miR-21 expression was significantly higher in the HF + DM group as compared with the CAD + DM group; miR-1 was negatively correlated with NT-proBNP (r = −0.891, p < 0.001) and galectin-3 (r = −0.886, p < 0.001) in the HF + DM group; and miR-21 showed a strongly positive correlation with (r = 0.734, p < 0.001) and galectin-3 (r = 0.764. p < 0.001) in the HF + DM group. These results suggest that the circulating decreased miR-1 and increased miR-21 expression are associated with NT-proBNP and galectin-3 levels in acute HF + DM. Especially the miR-21 expression might be useful in predicting the onset of acute HF in asymptomatic T2DM patients. The miR-21 expression is more valuable than the miR-1 expression in predicting cardiovascular events of acute HF and the combined analysis of miR-21 expression, galectin-3, and NT-proBNP can increase the predictive value of miR-21 expression.

Abstract
We investigated the association between carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) with clusterin (CLU), amylin, secreted frizzled-related protein-4 (SFRP-4), glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) levels, and dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) individuals with or without coronary artery disease (CAD). This study consisted of four groups: control group (mean ages: 50.3±10.7 years; 20 females and 15 males), diabetic group (DM; mean ages: 53.9±11.1; 14 females and 23 males), CAD group (mean ages: 60.1±43.5; 17 females and 17 males) and CAD+DM group (mean ages: 62.6±11.8 years; 18 females and 18 males). CIMT levels in both CAD and CAD+DM groups are higher than those in controls. CIMT levels in CAD+DM group are also significantly higher than those in DM group. Left external carotid artery (ECA) was found different from controls only in DM group. The levels of SFRP-4 in control group were significantly lower than those in DM, CAD and CAD+DM groups. Serum GLP-1total levels were found to be significantly low in CAD+DM group when compared to control group. DPP-4 and SFRP-4 levels may be a predictive marker for atherosclerosis in diabetes while particularly in diabetes, they correlate well with HOMA-IR. CIMT has the potential to be a clinically useful predictor of vascular risk in diabetic patients with CAD (Tab. 3, Fig. 2, Ref. 39). Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the possible role of PON-1, an antioxidant lipophilic enzyme linked to HDL-C (high-density lipoprotein cholesterol), on the pathophysiology and clinical follow-up of acute pancreatitis. Biochemical tests, PON-1 and oxidative stress parameters (malonyl dialdehyde, MDA; superoxide dismutase, SOD; total antioxidant capacity, TAC) were evaluated in the sera of patients with acute pancreatitis at admission (day 0), day 3 and day 10 of follow-up, between June and September 2017. SPSS 13.0 statistical software package programme was used for statistical analyses.Mean age was 51.4 of the total 25 patients. Ranson scores were 0-1 points (60%), 3-4 points (24%) and 5-6 points (16%). CTSI (computed tomography severity index) scores were calculated, and most of the patients were seen to have mild or average pancreatitis (96%). While total cholesterol, triacylglycerol and LDL-C (low-density lipoprotein) levels stayed in their normal limits, there was a significant decrement tendency. HDL-C level was seen to rise significantly above its upper limit at day 10 (p < 0.001). Mean PON-1 levels were measured as 69.23, 76.72 vs. 113.15 U/mL at days 0, 3 and 10, respectively; and it was positively correlated with HDL-C (p < 0.001). Serum SOD increased also in parallel with PON-1 (20.49 vs. 39.46 U/mL) while MDA level decreased significantly (3.9 vs. 2.28 μM, p < 0.001). TAC was seen to rise significantly after treatment (0.52 vs. 1.22 mM). In conclusion, decreased PON-1 and HDL-C together with antioxidants SOD and TAC at the early period of acute pancreatitis were seen to rise after treatment, while the previously higher MDA level decreased in parallel. This reveals the importance of the balance between oxidative stress and antioxidant defense mechanisms in clinical progression of the disease, and the potential of PON-1 as a promising clinical marker.

Abstract
Background: Taurine has an active role in providing glucose homeostasis and diabetes causes a decline in taurine levels. This paper investigates the relationship between taurine and diabetic complications, patients' demographic features, and biochemical parameters. Methods: Fifty-nine patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), and 28 healthy control subjects between the ages of 32 and 82 were included in the study. The mean age of subjects was 55.6 ± 10.3 and mean diabetes duration was 10.2 ± 6.0 years. The most commonly accompanying comorbidity was hypertension (HT) (64.5%, n = 38), and the most frequent diabetic complication was neuropathy (50.8%, n = 30). Plasma taurine concentrations were measured by an enzyme-linked immunoassay (ELISA) kit. Results: Plasma taurine concentrations were significantly lower in diabetic patients (0.6 ± 0.1 mmol/L) than controls (0.8 ± 0.2 mmol/L) and in hypertensive (0. 6 ± 0.1 mmol/L) patients (p = 0.000, p = 0.027 respectively). Conclusion: Plasma taurine levels were decreased in patients with T2DM and this was not related to FBG, HbA1c, and microalbuminuria. With regard to complications, we only found a correlation with neuropathy. We suggest that taurine levels may be more important in the development of diabetes; however, it may also have importance for the progression of the disease and the subsequent complications. We further assert that taurine measurement at different times may highlight whether there is a causal relationship in the development of complications.

Abstract
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is influenced by genetic and environmental factors. A protease-antiprotease imbalance has been suggested as a possible pathogenic mechanism for COPD. Here, we examined the relationship between circulating serpina3g, matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9), and tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-1 and -2 (TIMP-1 and -2, respectively) and severity of COPD. We included 150 stable COPD patients and 35 control subjects in the study. The COPD patients were classified into four groups (I, II, III, and IV), according to the Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) guidelines based on the severity of symptoms and the exacerbation risk. Plasma serpina3g, MMP-9, and TIMP-1 and -2 concentrations were significantly higher in the all patients than in control subjects. Plasma serpina3g, MMP-9, and TIMP-1 and -2 concentrations were significantly higher in groups III and IV than in groups I and II. A negative correlation between serpina3g, MMP-9, and TIMP-1 and -2 levels and the forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1) was observed. MMP-9 concentration and the MMP-9/TIMP-1 ratio were higher in patients with emphysema than in other phenotypes (both with p < 0.01). The findings of this study suggest that circulating serpina3g, MMP-9, and TIMP-1 and -2 levels may play an important role in airway remodeling in COPD pathogenesis. Disrupted protease-antiprotease imbalance in patients with COPD is related to the presence of airway injury. MMP-9 concentration and the MMP-9/TIMP-1 ratio are the best predictors of emphysema in COPD patients.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of this study is to investigate serum and tissue procalcitonin (PCT) levels in patients with nasal polyps. METHODS The study was designed to be prospectively controlled and included 26 patients chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyp (CRSwNP) endoscopically diagnosed and as a control group 25 chronic rhinosinusitis without nasal polyp (CRSsNP). NP specimens, nasal mucosal tissue and venous blood samples of both groups were collected and PCT levels determined by Elisa method. The results were compared statistically. RESULTS Serum PCT values were 1319.5 pg/mL in the NP group and 818.8 pg/mL in the control group. The difference between the groups was statistically significant (p = 0.0001). In the NP group, the average PCT value of the polyp tissue was 1521.5 pg/gr, while the mean PCT value of the control group in the nasal mucosa was 414.6 pg/gr. There was a statistically significant difference between the groups (p = 0.0001). The tissue cut-off value of PCT 750 was significant [area under curve 0.940 (0.863-1.00)]. Serum PCT 950 cut-off value was significant [area under curve 0.860 (0.748-0.972)] activity (CI: 95%). CONCLUSIONS This is the first study of its kind to objectively examine PCT in the polyp and serum of CRSwNP patients. PCT may serve as a diagnostic biomarker in nasal polyps.

Abstract
Background Antimicrobial peptides are effectors of host defence against infection and inflammation and can encourage wound repair. Objectives The objectives of this study were to investigate the plasma antimicrobial peptide LL-37 and nuclear factor-kappaB (NF-κB) levels in patients with stable COPD compared with a control group and to highlight their importance in immune inflammation. Methods One hundred and thirty-eight stable COPD patients and 33 control subjects were enrolled in the study. The COPD patients were classified into four groups based on FEV1 (groups I-IV) and also divided into "low-risk and high-risk" groups (groups A-B [low risk], C-D [high risk]). Results Plasma LL-37 levels were significantly lower while plasma NF-κB levels of the COPD patients were significantly higher than those of the control subjects (P<0.001, both). LL-37 levels were significantly lower in group IV than in groups I, II, and III (P<0.01, all). NF-κB levels were significantly higher in groups III and IV than in groups I and II (P<0.05, both). There was a positive correlation between FEV1 and FEV1/FVC in all COPD patients (r=0.742, P<0.001) and in group D (r=0.741, P<0.001). Furthermore, there was an inverse correlation between LL-37 and NF-κB in both the groups C (r=-0.566, P<0.001) and D (r=-0.694, P<0.001) and group C+D combined (r=-0.593, P<0.001). Furthermore, in group C, LL-37 and FEV1 were positively correlated (r=0.633, P<0.001). Conclusion Our study indicated that plasma LL-37 and NF-κB may play an important role in chronic immune inflammation. Decreased LL-37 levels may be particularly high risk for patients in stage IV disease. The role of LL-37 as a target for treatment of the immune system and COPD must be widely evaluated.

Abstract
Objective: To determine the predictive role of serum levels of YKL-40 and cancer antigen (CA) 72-4 in the diagnosis of endometrial cancer (EC). Materials and Methods: Forty-one patients with EC and 21 women with uterine polyps were evaluated between January and December 2015 in a prospective study. Results: Age, body mass index, preoperative serum YKL-40 and CA 72-4 levels were significantly higher in the malignant group compared with the control group. Serum YKL-40 levels were significantly higher in patients with superficial myometrial invasion and no lymph node involvement (p=0.042; p=0.004). No relationship between clinicopathologic factors and serum CA 72-4 levels was found. Conclusion: Serum CA 72-4 and YKL-40 levels are increased in women with EC compared with uterine polyps. Preoperative serum YKL-40 levels may be associated with favorable prognostic factors. The determination of YKL-40 before surgery may be helpful in the evaluation of the regional lymph nodes.

Abstract
There is a widespread use of 2.4 GHz electromagnetic radiation emitting devices especially in communication and education. Recent studies show the adverse effects of electromagnetic fields (EMF) such as oxidative stress, cellular damage and apoptosis on tissues. Selenium (Se) has an antioxidant properties by inhibiting oxidative damage being within the structure of antioxidant enzymes like glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) and it has also regulatory function for cell cycle and apoptosis. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of Se on 2.4 GHz frequency EMF exposed human embryonic kidney cells (HEK293) by means of alterations in apoptotic and oxidative stress parameters. Our study was planned as control, EMF, 100 nM Se + EMF, 200 nM Se + EMF groups. EMF groups were exposed to 2.4 GHz EMF for 1 h, element groups were incubated with two different doses of Se added cell culture medium for 48 h before EMF exposure. MDA levels were significantly higher whereas SOD and GSH-Px activities were significantly lower in EMF compared to control. 100 and 200 nM Se + EMF application decreased MDA levels, increased SOD and GSH-Px activities than EMF. Apoptosis and caspase-3 were statistically significantly higher but bcl-2 was lower in EMF than control. Apoptosis and caspase-3 were lower in 100 and 200 nM Se + EMF, although bcl-2 were higher than EMF. In conclusion, Se has protective effects against 2.4 GHz EMF-induced oxidative stress by reducing lipid peroxidation, regulating SOD and GSH-Px activity. Also, Se has inhibitory effect on 2.4 GHz EMF induced apoptosis by increasing the expression of anti-apoptotic protein bcl-2 and suppressing apoptosis regulatory protein caspase-3.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The faecal calprotectin (FC) test is widely used as a non-invasive method for identifying intestinal inflammation. A recent study suggested FC may help to diagnose gastrointestinal involvement of Behçet's syndrome (GIBS). We aimed to determine whether FC helps to distinguish active from inactive intestinal involvement in GIBS. METHODS We tried to contact 70 GIBS patients registered in our tertiary multidisciplinary clinic. We prospectively collected faecal specimens and serum from 39 GIBS patients who gave informed consent assessing calprotectin and CRP levels followed by a colonoscopy. We included 47 Crohn's disease (CD) patients as controls. Active disease was defined as having ulcer/s on colonoscopy. We filled the Disease Activity Index for Intestinal Behçet's Disease (DAIBD) and Crohn's Disease Activity Index (CDAI). The cut-off for positive FC was defined as ≥150 μg/g. RESULTS Ulcers were detected in 12/39 GIBS patients. Sensitivity and specificity of the FC test for active disease was 91.7 (95%CI:61.5-99.8) and 74.1% (95%CI:53.7-88.9). Median FC and CRP levels and DAIBD scores were higher among patients with ulcers, whereas serum calprotectin and CDAI scores were not. A negative FC test was the only significant predictor of remission (OR:37.04, 95%CI:2.4-561.6; p=0.009) on multivariate analysis. Among CD patients, 16/25 active patients and 3/22 patients in endoscopic remission had a positive FC test (OR:11, 95%CI:11-49). CONCLUSIONS FC, but not serum calprotectin seems to be a useful non-invasive tool for assessing disease activity in GIBS. Whether the presence of oral ulcers can cause false positive results remains to be studied.

Abstract
Quercetin (QR) is part of a subclass of flavonoids called flavonols. We aimed to investigate the effect of QR on malondialdehyde (MDA), advanced oxidation protein products (AOPPs), and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activity in the liver of diabetic rats. We compared four groups of male adult Wistar albino rats: a control group, an untreated diabetic group, diabetic groups treated with QR, and QR group. Diabetes was induced by a single injection of streptozotocin (STZ) (50 mg/kg). Animals were kept in standard condition. On the 31st day of the study, the liver tissue was removed for biochemical parameters and histopathological evaluations. In an untreated diabetic group, liver MDA and AOPP levels were significantly higher than all groups. QR treatment significantly decreased the increased MDA, AOPP levels, and increased the decreased GSH-Px enzyme activity in liver tissues. The QR-treated rats in the diabetic group showed an improved histological appearance. Lesser vesicular vacuolization and fibrotic areas were observed in the QR-treated diabetic group than in the diabetic group. The STZ-induced liver injury is associated with oxidative stress, and coadministration of QR may reduce this damage effectively in a rat model. Our results are also supported by morphological improvement in liver tissue. Therefore, we think QR may be effective in treating hyperglycemia and oxidative damage in diabetes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the use of YKL-40 in the discrimination between benign and malignant adnexal mass and to determine its prognostic value in assessing residual tumor after primary cytoreduction and platinum sensitivity in serous epithelial ovarian carcinoma (EOC). MATERIALS AND METHODS During the three years from January 2015 to December 2017, a nonconsecutive series of 100 patient (60 malignant, 40 benign) who underwent surgery for an adnexal mass were enrolled in the study. Preoperatively, serum samples were collected for YKL-40 level analysis. RESULTS YKL-40 [receiver operator characteristics (ROC)-area under curve (AUC)=0.83] was a significantly better predictor of EOC than cancer antigen-125 (ROC-AUC=0.75). Using a cut-off for YKL-40 of 47.7 ng/mL had a sensitivity of 80% and a specificity of 70%. Higher serum YKL-40 levels were associated with advanced stage, higher grade, residual tumor after primary cytoreduction and recurrence. Platinum-sensitive patients had significantly elevated levels of YKL-40 compared with platinum-resistant or refractory patients. CONCLUSION The results obtained from our study support the use of serum YKL-40 for the discrimination between malignant and benign ovarian tumors. YKL-40 levels in patients with serous EOC may also predict disease residual disease after primary cytoreduction and recurrence. Further studies are needed to understand the relationship between YKL-40 and platinum sensitivity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is mainly caused by metabolic factors, vascular inflammation, and endothelial dysfunction. We aimed to evaluate the relationship of DR with inflammatory and biochemical alterations in type 2 diabetics. METHODS A total of 89 diabetic patients with retinopathy [(DR (+) (n = 30)], without retinopathy [(DR (-) (n = 32)], and 27 control subjects were involved in the study. Demographic properties, biochemical values, ophtalmologic evaluation, C-reactive protein (CRP), and pentraxin-3 (PTX-3) levels were recorded. RESULTS There was significant difference between controls, DR (-) and DR (+) groups with regard to serum PTX-3 levels. Control group had the lowest and DR (+) group revealed the highest PTX-3 levels. Severity of retinopathy was not related with CRP or PTX-3 levels. Duration of diabetes was longer, systolic blood pressure (SBP) and urinary albumin-creatinine ratio (UACR) were significantly higher in DR (+) subjects than DR (-) subjects. Multivariate analysis revealed that PTX-3 level and SBP were the variables that had a significant effect on DR (P = 0.002, OR = 1.61, and P = 0.021, OR = 1.06, respectively). CONCLUSIONS Plasma PTX-3 levels may be a valuable predictor of DR-like factors such as duration of diabetes, hypertension, and UACR. Although inflammation has an important role in DR, we think that biomarkers reflecting inflammation is not sufficient to predict development and progression of DR; but follow up with PTX-3 levels along with ophthalmological evaluation may be useful. A single determination may not reflect the variations over time, so repeat measures may provide knowledge if PTX-3 is just a biomarker or has a causal role.

Abstract
In the present work, the effect of ozone treatments on the structural properties of soybean oil (SBO) and hazelnut oil (HO) were investigated. The study presents the findings and results about the oxidation of HO and SBO with ozone, which has not been fully studied previously. The HO and SBO were treated with ozone gas for 1, 5, 15, 30, 60, 180 and 360 min. The ozone reactivity with the SBO and HO during the ozone treatment was analyzed by 1H, 13C NMR, FTIR and GC. The iodine value, viscosity and color variables (L*, a* and b*) of untreated and ozone treated oils were determined. Reaction products were identified according to the Criegee mechanism. New signals at 5.15 and 104.35 ppm were assigned to the ring protons of 1,2,4- trioxolane (secondary ozonide) in the ozonated oils in 1H and 13C NMR, respectively. Ozonated oils exhibited peaks at 9.75 and 2.43 ppm in 1H and NMR, which corresponded to the aldehydic proton and α-methylene group and to the carbonyl carbon, respectively. The peak at 43.9 ppm in 13C NMR was related to the α-methylene group and to the carbonyl carbon. The new signals formed in the ozonation process gradually increased with respect to ozone treatment time. After 360 min of ozone treatment, the carbon-carbon double bond signal, which belongs to the unsaturated fatty acids, disappeared completely in the spectrum. An increase in viscosity, a decrease in iodine value and a dramatic reduction in b* of the oil samples on (+) axis were observed with increased ozone treatment time.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Acute pancreatitis (AP) is the third most common gastrointestinal disease at hospital admission. The etiology and pathogenesis of this disease are not completely clear. Our study was intended to determine the systemic levels of pentraxin-3 (PTX-3), myeloperoxidase (MPO), procalcitonin (PCT), and C-reactive protein (CRP) as prognostic parameters in early stages of AP. We also determined the effects of treatment on PTX-3, MPO, PCT and CRP levels in AP. MATERIAL AND METHODS The study group comprised 44 AP patients (22 male, 22 female; age: 49.3 ±16.9 years) referred to our outpatient clinic. Additionally, our investigation included a control group of 30 healthy volunteers (18 male, 12 female; age: 50.8 ±12.6 years). RESULTS Leukocytes, glucose, aspartate aminotransferase (AST (SGOT)), alanine aminotransferase (ALT (SGPT)), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), total and direct bilirubin levels were significantly higher in the AP group (p < 0.05, all). CRP, PTX-3, MPO and PCT were considerably higher in the AP group (p < 0.001, all), and after treatment, CRP, PTX-3, MPO and PCT levels were significantly lower (p < 0.001, all). CONCLUSIONS Our findings indicated that the CRP, PTX-3, MPO and PCT levels increase in patients with AP and hence these indicators can be used as diagnostic factors to predict inflammation severity in AP. It was revealed that after treatment, there were significant reductions in biomarker levels. However, further research is needed in order to understand how these biomarkers can help to monitor inflammatory responses in AP.

Abstract
Purpose Intra-abdominal adhesions (IAA) are among the most frequently seen pathologies in general surgery practice with an increased morbidity and mortality. In the present study, we investigated the effect of locally applied mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) on IAA. Methods Twenty-four Wistar Albino rats were used in the study. The rats were divided into three groups including: Sham, control, and MSCs group. On day 0, cecum was reached under anesthesia in all groups, except the Sham group. Scraping with a sponge was performed until petechial bleeding occurred. The control group received no treatment. In the stem cell group, MSCs were applied topically immediately after surgery on adhesions. The rats were sacrificed on day 10 and colon tissues and blood samples were collected for macroscopic, histopathological, and biochemical analysis. Results In our study, E-selectin, P-selectin, TNF-α and IL-1 levels were statistically significantly lower in the MSC group than the control group, while the sham group has the lowest levels. In both the macroscopic and histopathological analyses (Zühlke's scale), the least amount of adhesion was observed in the Sham group. In addition, although there was less adhesion in the MSC group than the control group, the difference did not reach statistical significance. Conclusion Topical MSC application immediately after surgery suppresses the inflammatory process. However it was found to be ineffective in histopathological and macroscopic examinations performed on the 10th day.
