Abstract
Abstract:Power spectral analysis has been applied to spontaneous single neuronal activities during the sleep-waking cycle in various regions of the cat’s central nervous system. During slow-wave sleep (SWS), the spontaneous activities of many neurons had a white noise-like power-spectral density profile in a very low frequency range (0.01-1.0 Hz) whereas, during rapid-eye-movement sleep (REMS), they showed a 1/f-like spectral pattern. This spectral transition between SWS and REMS was hypothesized to depend on the influence of serotonergic and cholinergic neuronal activity which is considered to modulate various brain functions. According to both pharmacological experiments and simulation studies with a neural network model, it was concluded that the serotonergic system may have a function to eliminate slow fluctuations in neuronal activity in wide areas, from the reticulothalamo-neocortical to the limbic systems. Consequently, simple signal processing of spontaneous neuronal activity has elucidated an important neurophysiological fact, which may lead to a principle of the basic brain function and its mechanism.

Abstract
Abstract:We attempt to differentiate the physiological state during sensory deprivation (SD) from normal sleep and wakefulness in terms of electroencephalogram (EEG) and heart rate variability (HRV) dynamics. KullbackLeibler (K-L) divergence is employed to quantify differences between their state-dependent dynamics. As a result, the dynamics of EEG and HRV during SD are found to be far distant from any representative dynamics of natural states of sleep and wakefulness. However, relatively speaking, the findings in SD can be categorized into two patterns. (a) The dynamics of HRV during SD is similar to that of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, and the dynamics of EEG during SD is similar to that of wakefulness. (b) The dynamics of both HRV and EEG during SD are similar to that of REM. Such dissociation between states classified by EEG and HRV dynamics frequently takes place during SD. These findings suggest the peculiarity of the physiological state during the SD distinct from sleep and wakefulness.

Abstract
AIM Hepatic insulin clearance (HIC) is important in regulating plasma insulin levels. Diminished HIC causes inappropriate hyperinsulinaemia, and both obesity and fatty liver (FL), which are known to decrease HIC, can be found either together in the same patient or on their own. The mechanism by which obesity reduces HIC is presumed to be mediated by FL. However, few reports have examined the role of FL in the relationship between obesity and HIC in type 2 diabetes (T2D) patients. Therefore, our study investigated the association of HIC with clinical factors, including insulin sensitivity indices, focusing on the presence or absence of FL and obesity in T2D patients. METHOD Baseline data from 419 patients with T2D (279 men, 140 women; mean age: 57.6 years; body mass index: 25.5kg/m2) controlled by diet and exercise were analyzed. HIC was calculated from the ratio of fasting c-peptide to fasting insulin levels (HICCIR). Correlation analyses between HICCIR and clinical variables were performed using Pearson's product-moment correlation coefficients and single regression analysis in all participants and in those with obesity and FL either alone or in combination. RESULTS HICCIR was significantly correlated with whole-body insulin sensitivity indices and influenced by FL, but only in the FL group was obesity independently influenced HIC level. HICCIR decreased in those with both FL and obesity compared with those with only one such complication. CONCLUSION HICCIR may be used to evaluate whole-body insulin sensitivity in T2D. Also, compared with obesity, the influence of FL strongly contributed to a reduced HIC. TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER These trials were registered by the Japan Pharmaceutical Information Centre clinical trials information (JapicCTI) as 101349 and 101351.

Abstract
C-reactive protein to albumin (CRP/Alb) ratio, a novel inflammation-based prognostic score, was first developed as a prognostic score for septic patients. Recent reports show that CRP/Alb ratio is also a prognostic score for cancer patients, including esophageal cancer. However, the role of CRP/Alb ratio for those with neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) and the changes of CRP/Alb ratio around NAC have never been discussed. The aim of this study is to evaluate the significance of CRP/Alb ratio around NAC for patients with cStage II/III esophageal squamous cell cancer (ESCC). A total of 149 patients who were diagnosed as cStage II/III ESCC were enrolled between February 2007 and December 2014. We retrospectively investigated the relation between pre-NAC and post-NAC CRP/Alb ratio and short and long outcomes. The optimal cutoff level for pre-NAC and post-NAC CRP/Alb ratio was 0.030 and 0.048, respectively. There was no relation between CRP/Alb ratio level and postoperative outcomes. Post-NAC CRP/Alb ratio < 0.048 had a significantly higher overall survival rate than CRP/Alb ratio ≥0.048 (P< 0.001). Univariate analysis showed that cT, cN, pre-NAC CRP/Alb ratio < 0.030 and post-NAC CRP/Alb ratio < 0.048 was prognostic factors (P= 0.003, P= 0.022, P= 0.033, and P< 0.001, respectively). Multivariate analysis showed that cT and post-NAC CRP/Alb ratio < 0.048 was independent prognostic factors (P= 0.030 and P< 0.001, respectively). Post-NAC CRP/Alb ratio is an independent prognostic factor in patients with cStage II/III ESCC.

Abstract
Microbial nitrification is a key process in the nitrogen cycle in the continental shelf ecosystems. The genotype compositions and abundance of the ammonia monooxygenase gene, amoA, derived from ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA) and bacteria (AOB) in two size fractions (2-10 and 0.2-2 µm), were investigated in the East China Sea (ECS) in May 2008 using PCR-denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) and quantitative PCR (qPCR). Four sites were selected across the continental shelf edge: continental shelf water (CSW), Kuroshio branch water (KBW), transition between CSW and KBW (TCSKB) and coastal KBW (CKBW). The gene copy numbers of AOA-amoA were higher than those of AOB-amoA in ECS. The relative abundance of amoA to the total 16S rRNA gene level reached approximately 15% in KBW and CKBW for the free-living fraction of AOA, whereas the level was less than 0.01% throughout ECS for the AOB. A cluster analysis of the AOA-amoA-DGGE band pattern showed distinct genotype compositions in CSW in both the size fractions and in the surface of the TCSKB and KBW. Sequences of the DGGE bands were assigned to two clades. One of the clades exclusively consisted of sequences derived from the 2-10-µm fraction. This study revealed that AOA-amoA abundance dominated over AOB-amoA throughout the ECS, whereas the genotype composition of AOA-amoA were distributed heterogeneously across the water masses. Additionally, this is the first report showing the distribution of AOA-amoA genotypes characteristic to particle-associated AOA in the offshore of the East China Sea.

Abstract
The influenza D virus, a new member of the Orthomyxoviridae family, is predominantly found in cattle. Although viral pathology and clinical disease in cattle appear mild, this virus plays an important role as a trigger of bovine respiratory disease (BRD). BRD is a costly illness worldwide. Thus, epidemiological surveys of the influenza D virus are necessary. Here, we conducted a molecular epidemiological survey for the influenza D virus in healthy and respiratory-diseased cattle in Japan. We found that 2.1% (8/377) of the cattle were infected with influenza D. The cattle with and without respiratory symptoms had approximately equal amounts of the virus. A full-genome sequence analysis revealed that the influenza D virus that was isolated in Japan formed an individual cluster that was distinct from the strains found in other countries. These results suggest that this virus might have evolved uniquely in Japan over a long period of time and that the viral pathology of Japanese strains might be different from the strains found in other countries. Continuous surveillance is required to determine the importance of this virus and to characterize its evolution.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to examine the impact of obesity, as defined by body mass index (BMI), and a metabolically unhealthy phenotype on the development of coronary artery disease (CAD) according to glucose tolerance status. METHODS . Metabolically unhealthy individuals were defined as those with one or more of the following conditions: hypertension, hypertriglyceridaemia and/or low HDL cholesterol. A Cox proportional hazards regression model identified variables related to CAD incidence. RESULTS The prevalences of obese subjects with normal glucose tolerance, prediabetes and diabetes were 21%, 34% and 53%, whereas those for metabolically unhealthy people were 43%, 60% and 79%, respectively. Multivariate analysis showed that a metabolically unhealthy phenotype increases hazard ratios (HRs) for CAD compared with a metabolically healthy phenotype, regardless of glucose tolerance status (normal glucose tolerance: 1.98, 95% CI: 1.32-2.95; prediabetes: 2.91, 95% CI: 1.85-4.55; diabetes: 1.90, 95% CI: 1.18-3.06). HRs for CAD among metabolically unhealthy non-obese diabetes patients and obese diabetes patients with a metabolically unhealthy status were 6.14 (95% CI: 3.94-9.56) and 7.86 (95% CI: 5.21-11.9), respectively, compared with non-obese subjects with normal glucose tolerance and without a metabolically unhealthy status. CONCLUSION A metabolically unhealthy state can associate with CAD independently of obesity across all glucose tolerance stages. Clinicians may need to consider those with at least one or more conditions indicating a metabolically unhealthy state as being at high risk for CAD regardless of glucose tolerance status.

Abstract
Aortoesophageal fistula is a critical and life-threatening disease. The cardiovascular strategy for graft replacement has been widely discussed. However, the surgical strategy of esophageal resection and reconstruction for aortoesophageal fistula has rarely been discussed. The objective of this study is to establish a surgical strategy and procedure of esophageal resection and reconstruction for aortoesophageal fistula. Eleven patients with aortoesophageal fistula who underwent aortic graft replacement and esophagectomy between 2008 and 2015 at Kobe University Hospital were enrolled in this study. Patient characteristics, operative methods, and clinical outcomes were obtained by retrospective chart review. All 11 patients underwent graft replacement, esophagectomy, and omental wrapping. Ten esophagectomies were simultaneously accomplished in the same operative field as aortic graft replacement. Seven patients underwent subtotal esophagectomy from a left thoracotomy, and three patients underwent upper hemiesophagectomy from a median sternotomy. The other patient underwent staged esophagectomy from a right thoracotomy. Seven of 11 patients (63.6%) successfully underwent staged esophageal reconstruction. Pedicled jejunal transfer with supercharge and superdrainage were performed in six patients, and ileocecal reconstruction was performed in one patient. Median survival time in the patients with esophageal reconstruction was 21 months while that in the patients without esophageal reconstruction was 10 months. Six of 7 patients (85.7%) who underwent esophageal reconstructions were alive. Our surgical strategy for aortoesophageal fistula, which includes simultaneous graft replacement and esophagectomy in the same operative field and staged reconstruction by pedicled jejunal transfer to ensure omental wrapping, is feasible and promising.

Abstract
The human gluteus maximus muscle (GMX) is characterised by its insertion to the iliotibial tract (a lateral thick fascia of the thigh beneath the fascia lata), which plays a critical role in lateral stabilisation of the hip joint during walking. In contrast, in non-human primates, the GMX and biceps femoris muscle provide a flexor complex. According to our observations of 15 human embryos and 11 foetuses at 7-10 weeks of gestation (21-55 mm), the GMX anlage was divided into 1) a superior part that developed earlier and 2) a small inferior part that developed later. The latter was adjacent to, or even continuous with, the biceps femoris. At 8 weeks, both parts inserted into the femur, possibly the future gluteal tuberosity. However, depending on traction by the developing inferior part as well as pressure from the developing major trochanter of the femur, most of the original femoral insertion of the GMX appeared to be detached from the femur. Therefore, at 9-10 weeks, the GMX had a digastric muscle-like appearance with an intermediate band connecting the major superior part to the small inferior mass. This band, most likely corresponding to the initial iliotibial tract, extended laterally and distally far from the muscle fibres. The fascia lata was still thin and the tensor fasciae latae seemed to develop much later. It seems likely that the evolutionary transition from quadripedality to bipedality and a permanently upright posture would require the development of a new GMX complex with the iliotibial tract that differs from that in non-human primates. Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE The Low-Profile Visualized Intraluminal Support Device comprises a small-cell nitinol structure and a single-wire braided stent that provides greater metal coverage than previously reported intracranial stents, as well as assumed strong susceptibility artifacts. This study aimed to assess the benefits of non-contrast-enhanced MRA by using a Silent Scan (Silent MRA) for intracranial anterior circulation aneurysms treated with Low-Profile Visualized Intraluminal Support Device stents. MATERIALS AND METHODS Thirty-one aneurysms treated with Low-Profile Visualized Intraluminal Support Device stents were assessed by using Silent MRA, 3D TOF-MRA, and x-ray DSA. The quality of MRA visualization of the reconstructed artery was graded on a 4-point scale from 1 (not visible) to 4 (excellent). Aneurysm occlusion status was evaluated by using a 2-grade scale (total occlusion/remnant [neck or aneurysm]). Weighted κ statistics were used to evaluate interobserver and intermodality agreement. RESULTS The mean scores ± SDs for Silent MRA and 3D TOF-MRA were 3.16 ± 0.79 and 1.48 ± 0.67 (P < .05), respectively, with substantial interobserver agreement (κ = 0.66). The aneurysm occlusion rates of the 2-grade scale (total occlusion/remnant [neck or aneurysm]) were 69%/31% for DSA, 65%/35% for Silent MRA, and 92%/8% for 3D TOF-MRA, respectively. The intermodality agreements were 0.88 and 0.30 for DSA/Silent MRA and DSA/3D TOF-MRA, respectively. CONCLUSIONS Silent MRA seems to be useful for visualizing intracranial anterior circulation aneurysms treated with Low-Profile Visualized Intraluminal Support Device stents.

Abstract
T2K reports its first results in the search for CP violation in neutrino oscillations using appearance and disappearance channels for neutrino- and antineutrino-mode beams. The data include all runs from January 2010 to May 2016 and comprise 7.482×10^{20} protons on target in neutrino mode, which yielded in the far detector 32 e-like and 135 μ-like events, and 7.471×10^{20} protons on target in antineutrino mode, which yielded 4 e-like and 66 μ-like events. Reactor measurements of sin^{2}2θ_{13} have been used as an additional constraint. The one-dimensional confidence interval at 90% for the phase δ_{CP} spans the range (-3.13, -0.39) for normal mass ordering. The CP conservation hypothesis (δ_{CP}=0, π) is excluded at 90% C.L.

Abstract
Recent schizophrenia (SCZ) studies have reported an increased burden of de novo copy number variants (CNVs) and identified specific high-risk CNVs, although with variable phenotype expressivity. However, the pathogenesis of SCZ has not been fully elucidated. Using array comparative genomic hybridization, we performed a high-resolution genome-wide CNV analysis on a mainly (92%) Japanese population (1699 SCZ cases and 824 controls) and identified 7066 rare CNVs, 70.0% of which were small (<100 kb). Clinically significant CNVs were significantly more frequent in cases than in controls (odds ratio=3.04, P=9.3 × 10-9, 9.0% of cases). We confirmed a significant association of X-chromosome aneuploidies with SCZ and identified 11 de novo CNVs (e.g., MBD5 deletion) in cases. In patients with clinically significant CNVs, 41.7% had a history of congenital/developmental phenotypes, and the rate of treatment resistance was significantly higher (odds ratio=2.79, P=0.0036). We found more severe clinical manifestations in patients with two clinically significant CNVs. Gene set analysis replicated previous findings (e.g., synapse, calcium signaling) and identified novel biological pathways including oxidative stress response, genomic integrity, kinase and small GTPase signaling. Furthermore, involvement of multiple SCZ candidate genes and biological pathways in the pathogenesis of SCZ was suggested in established SCZ-associated CNV loci. Our study shows the high genetic heterogeneity of SCZ and its clinical features and raises the possibility that genomic instability is involved in its pathogenesis, which may be related to the increased burden of de novo CNVs and variable expressivity of CNVs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Y-configuration stent-assisted coil embolization is used for treating wide-neck aneurysms. Noninvasive alternatives to x-ray DSA for follow-up after Y-configuration stent-assisted coil embolization treatment are required. This study aimed to assess the usefulness of non-contrast-enhanced MRA by using a Silent Scan (silent MRA) for follow-up after Y-configuration stent-assisted coil embolization for basilar tip aneurysms. MATERIALS AND METHODS Seven patients treated with Y-configuration stent-assisted coil embolization for basilar tip aneurysms underwent silent MRA, 3D TOF-MRA, and DSA. Silent MRA and 3D TOF-MRA images were obtained during the same scan session on a 3T MR imaging system. Two neuroradiologists independently reviewed both types of MRA images and subjectively scored the flow in the stents on a scale of 1 (not visible) to 5 (nearly equal to DSA) by referring to the latest DSA image as a criterion standard. Furthermore, we evaluated the visualization of the neck remnant. RESULTS In all patients, the 2 observers gave a higher score for the flow in the stents on silent MRA than on 3D TOF-MRA. The average score ± standard deviation was 4.07 ± 0.70 for silent MRA and 1.93 ± 0.80 (P < .05) for 3D TOF-MRA. Neck remnants were depicted by DSA in 5 patients. In silent MRA, neck remnants were depicted in 5 patients, and visualization was similar to DSA; however, in 3D TOF-MRA, neck remnants were depicted in only 1 patient. CONCLUSIONS Silent MRA might be useful for follow-up after Y-configuration stent-assisted coil embolization.

Abstract
We investigate the critical current I_{C} of ballistic Josephson junctions made of encapsulated graphene-boron-nitride heterostructures. We observe a crossover from the short to the long junction regimes as the length of the device increases. In long ballistic junctions, I_{C} is found to scale as ∝exp(-k_{B}T/δE). The extracted energies δE are independent of the carrier density and proportional to the level spacing of the ballistic cavity. As T→0 the critical current of a long (or short) junction saturates at a level determined by the product of δE (or Δ) and the number of the junction's transversal modes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Stimulation of transient receptor potential ankyrin 1 (TRPA1), which abundantly expressed in enterochromaffin cells (ECC), has been reported to exert apparently contradictory results in in vitro contractility and in vivo gastrointestinal (GI) transit evaluations. The pharmaceutical-grade Japanese traditional medicine daikenchuto (TU-100) has been reported to be beneficial for postoperative ileus (POI) and accelerate GI transit in animals and humans. TU-100 was recently shown to increase intestinal blood flow via stimulation of TRPA1 in the epithelial cells of the small intestine (SI). METHODS The effects of various TRPA1 agonists on motility were examined in a manipulation-induced murine POI model, in vitro culture of SI segments and an ECC model cell line, RIN-14B. KEY RESULTS Orally administered TRPA1 agonists, aryl isothiocyanate (AITC) and cinnamaldehyde (CA), TU-100 ingredients, [6]-shogaol (6S) and γ-sanshool (GS), improved SI transit in a POI model. The effects of AITC, 6S and GS but not CA were abrogated in TRPA1-deficient mice. SI segments show periodic peristaltic motor activity whose periodicity disappeared in TRPA1-deficient mice. TU-100 augmented the motility. AITC, CA and 6S increased 5-HT release from isolated SI segments and the effects of all these compounds except for CA were lost in TRPA1-deficient mice. 6S and GS induced a release of 5-HT from RIN-14B cells in a dose- and TRPA1-dependent manner. CONCLUSIONS & INFERENCES Intraluminal TRPA1 stimulation is a potential therapeutic strategy for GI motility disorders. Further investigation is required to determine whether 5-HT and/or ECC are involved in the effect of TRPA1 on motility.

Abstract
In adults, the oblique cord or chorda obliqua separates the origins of the flexor pollicis longus (FPL) and flexor digitorum profundus (FDP) muscles from the supinator muscle and elbow joint. This study examined the topographic anatomy of the oblique cord and related muscles in foetuses. Semiserial sections of five mid-term foetuses of gestational age (GA) 14-16 weeks and 12 late-stage foetuses of GA 28-30 weeks were histologically examined and three forearms at GA 30 weeks were macroscopically evaluated. Late-stage foetuses showed a fascial structure between the supinator and FDP muscles. The latter extended proximally to the elbow joint and the muscle origin thickened the distal, ulnar part of the capsule. The FPL origin also extended proximally but did not reach the joint capsule. These morphologies were consistent with macroscopic examinations. The brachialis muscle was widely inserted into the proximal, anterior part of the capsule. In addition, the medial collateral ligament was not covered by the pronator-flexor muscles but by the triceps brachii muscle. The oblique cord apparently did not form prenatally. After birth, the proximal parts of the FDP and FPL muscles were likely replaced by collagenous tissues, providing a specific type of intermuscular septum i.e., the oblique cord. This type of muscle-ligament transition was observed in the annular ligament of the radius. The foetal elbow joint was characterised by strong support by the FDP, brachialis and triceps brachii muscles. Therefore, the foetal elbow is not a miniature version of the adult elbow.

Abstract
We report the first measurement of the flux-averaged cross section for charged current coherent π^{+} production on carbon for neutrino energies less than 1.5 GeV, and with a restriction on the final state phase space volume in the T2K near detector, ND280. Comparisons are made with predictions from the Rein-Sehgal coherent production model and the model by Alvarez-Ruso et al., the latter representing the first implementation of an instance of the new class of microscopic coherent models in a neutrino interaction Monte Carlo event generator. We observe a clear event excess above background, disagreeing with the null results reported by K2K and SciBooNE in a similar neutrino energy region. The measured flux-averaged cross sections are below those predicted by both the Rein-Sehgal and Alvarez-Ruso et al.

Abstract
Screening for oncogenes has mostly been performed by in vitro transformation assays. However, some oncogenes might not exhibit their transforming activities in vitro unless putative essential factors from in vivo microenvironments are adequately supplied. Here, we have developed an in vivo screening system that evaluates the tumorigenicity of target genes. This system uses a retroviral high-efficiency gene transfer technique, a large collection of human cDNA clones corresponding to ~70% of human genes and a luciferase-expressing immortalized mouse mammary epithelial cell line (NMuMG-luc). From 845 genes that were highly expressed in human breast cancer cell lines, we focused on 205 genes encoding membrane proteins and/or kinases as that had the greater possibility of being oncogenes or drug targets. The 205 genes were divided into five subgroups, each containing 34-43 genes, and then introduced them into NMuMG-luc cells. These cells were subcutaneously injected into nude mice and monitored for tumor development by in vivo imaging. Tumors were observed in three subgroups. Using DNA microarray analyses and individual tumorigenic assays, we found that three genes, ADORA2B, PRKACB and LPAR3, were tumorigenic. ADORA2B and LPAR3 encode G-protein-coupled receptors and PRKACB encodes a protein kinase A catalytic subunit. Cells overexpressing ADORA2B, LPAR3 or PRKACB did not show transforming phenotypes in vitro, suggesting that transformation by these genes requires in vivo microenvironments. In addition, several clinical data sets, including one for breast cancer, showed that the expression of these genes correlated with lower overall survival rate.
