Abstract
The COMPASS Collaboration at CERN has measured diffractive dissociation of 190 GeV/c pions into the π(-)π(-)π(+) final state using a stationary hydrogen target. A partial-wave analysis (PWA) was performed in bins of 3π mass and four-momentum transfer using the isobar model and the so far largest PWA model consisting of 88 waves. A narrow peak is observed in the f0(980)π channel with spin, parity and C-parity quantum numbers J(PC)=1(++). We present a resonance-model study of a subset of the spin-density matrix selecting 3π states with J(PC)=2(++) and 4(++) decaying into ρ(770)π and with J(PC)=1(++) decaying into f0(980)π. We identify a new a1 meson with mass (1414(-13)(+15)) MeV/c2 and width (153(-23)(+8)) MeV/c2. Within the final states investigated in our analysis, we observe the new a1(1420) decaying only into f0(980)π, suggesting its exotic nature.

Abstract
AIM Biological therapies are a risk factor for tuberculosis (TB). Portuguese recommendations recommend universal baseline screening for TB before starting biologics (2006) and annually thereafter if screened negative (2012 update). The gain with re-screening remains unknown. We aimed to i)identify the risk of latent TB infection at baseline screening among patients candidates to initiate biologics ii)present follow-up results for patients receiving different biological therapies and analyse intolerance or toxicity related to preventive therapy, conversions of immunodiagnostic tests under biological therapy and development of active TB. METHODS Patients screened for TB at a reference centre before starting biological therapy between 2008-2012 were identified. Medical files were retrospectively reviewed. Demographic data, screening and follow-up results and information on biological therapy were collected. EXCLUSION CRITERIA unavailable information on initiation of biological therapy. RESULTS 183 patients were included in the study, with 115 starting biological therapy. The baseline screening was positive in 52(45,2%) patients - 50(96,2%) were proposed for preventive treatment (2 had abnormal liver enzymes). Mild hepatotoxicity occurred in 4(8%) patients without need to interrupt TB prophylaxis. No cases of active TB occurred during follow-up in patients with positive baseline screening. Among the 63(54,8%) patients who screened negative, 2(3,2%) developed active TB (under infliximab and adalimumab) more than one year after initiation of biologics. 26(41,3%) patients were re-screened at the TB centre. 5(19,2%) had tuberculin skin test (TST) conversion and one concomitantly undetermined IGRA. No IGRA conversions were observed. The follow-up period was 4,0 years. TB baseline screening's negative predictive value (NPV) was 96,8% (95%CI: 89,0% to 99.5%). A low rate of re-screening was observed. CONCLUSION The rate of latent TB at baseline screening was higher than expected. Preventive treatment was well tolerated. No patients with positive baseline screening developed active TB. Efforts should be made to raise awareness concerning the risk of TB exposure, specially considering that the active TB cases were compatible with new infection. The rate of re-screening suggests a low awareness regarding current recommendations Nation-wide studies are necessary to evaluate the efficacy of the re-screening strategy and to clarify what risk groups most benefit from it.

Abstract
O objetivo do presente estudo foi verificar a influência da contaminação ambiental na microbiota dos animais utilizados em experimentação, usando-se videocâmera como ferramenta de controle, a partir da comparação de dois biotérios de experimentação, sendo um protegido com presença de videocâmeras (A) e o outro não (B), quanto ao padrão microbiológico dos camundongos. Para os testes bacteriológicos, foram utilizadas amostras de 222 animais do biotério A e 236 do biotério B; para os testes virológicos, 119 do biotério A e 236 do biotério B; já para os exames parasitológicos, 158 do biotério A e 316 do biotério B. Os dados foram submetidos à análise descritiva e ao teste do Qui-quadrado. Verificou-se uma maior ocorrência de microrganismos e de parasitas no biotério não protegido pelas videocâmeras. Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pasteurella sp. e Pseudomonas sp. foram encontradas nos animais de ambos os biotérios, ao passo que vírus e parasitos só foram detectados nos animais no biotério não protegido. Dentre os vírus, nos animais infectados, o de maior ocorrência foi o Vírus da Hepatite de Camundongos (MHV) e, dentre os parasitos, o de maior ocorrência foi Syphacia sp. Concluiu-se que o biotério protegido foi capaz de garantir padrões microbiológicos mais adequados para a experimentação animal, que as videocâmeras são importantes ferramentas de controle e que a prática da biossegurança deve ser constante nas instituições de pesquisa.

Abstract
The conduction electrons in a metal experience competing interactions with each other and the atomic nuclei. This competition can lead to many types of magnetic order in metals. For example, in chromium the electrons order to form a spin-density-wave (SDW) antiferromagnetic state. A magnetic field may be used to perturb or tune materials with delicately balanced electronic interactions. Here, we show that the application of a magnetic field can induce SDW magnetic order in a quasi-2D metamagnetic metal, where none exists in the absence of the field. We use magnetic neutron scattering to show that the application of a large (B ≈ 8 T) magnetic field to the perovskite metal Sr3Ru2O7 (refs 3-7) can be used to tune the material through two magnetically ordered SDW states. The ordered states exist over relatively small ranges in field (≲0.4 T), suggesting that their origin is due to a new mechanism related to the electronic fine structure near the Fermi energy, possibly combined with the stabilizing effect of magnetic fluctuations. The magnetic field direction is shown to control the SDW domain populations, which naturally explains the strong resistivity anisotropy or 'electronic nematic' behaviour observed in this material.

Abstract
The COMPASS collaboration at CERN has investigated pion Compton scattering, π(-)γ→π(-)γ, at center-of-mass energy below 3.5 pion masses. The process is embedded in the reaction π(-)Ni→π(-)γNi, which is initiated by 190 GeV pions impinging on a nickel target. The exchange of quasireal photons is selected by isolating the sharp Coulomb peak observed at smallest momentum transfers, Q(2)<0.0015 (GeV/c)(2). From a sample of 63,000 events, the pion electric polarizability is determined to be α(π)=(2.0±0.6(stat)±0.7(syst))×10(-4) fm(3) under the assumption α(π)=-β(π), which relates the electric and magnetic dipole polarizabilities. It is the most precise measurement of this fundamental low-energy parameter of strong interaction that has been addressed since long by various methods with conflicting outcomes. While this result is in tension with previous dedicated measurements, it is found in agreement with the expectation from chiral perturbation theory. An additional measurement replacing pions by muons, for which the cross-section behavior is unambiguously known, was performed for an independent estimate of the systematic uncertainty.

Abstract

Exchange of quasireal photons is selected by isolating the sharp Coulomb peak observed at smallest momentum transfers, t'<0.001 GeV2/c2. Using partial-wave analysis techniques, the scattering intensity of Coulomb production described in terms of chiral dynamics and its dependence on the 3π-invariant mass m(3π)=sqrt[s] were extracted. The absolute cross section was determined in seven bins of sqrt[s] with an overall precision of 20%. At leading order, the result is found to be in good agreement with the prediction of chiral perturbation theory over the whole energy range investigated.

Abstract
Advances in cancer treatment have led to an increase in patient survival. However, exposure to genotoxic chemotherapeutic agents and ionizing radiation may induce persistent genetic damage in cancer survivors. In this study, we detected genomic instability in chromosomes of peripheral blood lymphocytes from Hodgkin lymphoma patients, 2-17 years after MOPP (nitrogen mustard, Oncovin, procarbazine, and prednisone) chemotherapy with or without radiotherapy. Samples were obtained from 11 healthy individuals, 5 pretreatment patients, and 20 posttreatment patients. Cytogenetic analysis with GTG banding was performed on 1,000 lymphocyte metaphases per donor to identify genomic instability, including numerical and structural chromosomal aberrations, at a resolution of 10 Mb across the entire genome. Our results showed that anticancer treatment did not induce significant differences in the frequency of aneuploidy among the three study groups. However, 1 of the 11 healthy individuals, and 13 of the 20 posttreatment patients had a high frequency of chromosomal breaks and gross chromosomal rearrangements. The types of aberrations observed were random and complex, consistent with persistent genomic instability that was induced by cancer treatment. Clonal expansion of cells with chromosomal lesions was observed in one posttreatment patient only. These findings show that anticancer treatments induce persistent genomic instability, but not aneuploidy. Chemotherapy may affect genes with a role in DNA damage surveillance or repair, which in turn allows the accumulation of nontargeted structural chromosomal damage in future generations of cells. This genomic instability may facilitate the development of second malignancies in Hodgkin lymphoma survivors.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Lung involvement in rheumatologic disease in children has been described with low frequency. OBJECTIVE To describe the lung function test and the radiological findings in a group of paediatric patients with rheumatologic diseases. METHODS Descriptive study. Pulmonary function was evaluated with spirometry, carbon monoxide diffusing capacity, blood arterial gas at rest and post exercise in addition to chest radiography and high resolution computed tomography were performed in children with rheumatologic disease. RESULTS Of the fourteen patients studied: 11 were diagnosed with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA), two with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), and one with juvenile dermatomyositis (JDM). Mean age: 13 years (range 7-18 years). Nine females, duration of disease 4 ± 2.8 years (range 1-11 years). Four patients had any grade of abnormalities in one or more lung function tests and/or radiological test. CONCLUSION We recommend routine checks of pulmonary function in all patients with rheumatologic diseases even in the absence of respiratory symptoms.

Abstract
Although the number of papers about "vanadium" has doubled in the last decade, the studies about "vanadium and actin" are scarce. In the present review, the effects of vanadyl, vanadate and decavanadate on actin structure and function are compared. Decavanadate (51)V NMR signals, at -516 ppm, broadened and decreased in intensity upon actin titration, whereas no effects were observed for vanadate monomers, at -560 ppm. Decavanadate is the only species inducing actin cysteine oxidation and vanadyl formation, both processes being prevented by the natural ligand of the protein, ATP. Vanadyl titration with monomeric actin (G-actin), analysed by EPR spectroscopy, reveals a 1:1 binding stoichiometry and a K(d) of 7.5 μM(-1). Both decavanadate and vanadyl inhibited G-actin polymerization into actin filaments (F-actin), with a IC(50) of 68 and 300 μM, respectively, as analysed by light scattering assays, whereas no effects were detected for vanadate up to 2 mM. However, only vanadyl (up to 200 μM) induces 100% of G-actin intrinsic fluorescence quenching, whereas decavanadate shows an opposite effect, which suggests the presence of vanadyl high affinity actin binding sites. Decavanadate increases (2.6-fold) the actin hydrophobic surface, evaluated using the ANSA probe, whereas vanadyl decreases it (15%). Both vanadium species increased the ε-ATP exchange rate (k = 6.5 × 10(-3) s(-1) and 4.47 × 10(-3) s(-1) for decavanadate and vanadyl, respectively). Finally, (1)H NMR spectra of G-actin treated with 0.1 mM decavanadate clearly indicate that major alterations occur in protein structure, which are much less visible in the presence of ATP, confirming the preventive effect of the nucleotide on the decavanadate interaction with the protein. Putting it all together, it is suggested that actin, which is involved in many cellular processes, might be a potential target not only for decavanadate but above all for vanadyl. By affecting actin structure and function, vanadium can regulate many cellular processes of great physiological significance.

Abstract
Three commonly consumed and commercially valuable fish species (sardine, chub and horse mackerel) were collected from the Northeast and Eastern Central Atlantic Ocean in Portuguese waters during one year. Mercury, cadmium, lead and arsenic amounts were determined in muscles using graphite furnace and cold vapour atomic absorption spectrometry. Maximum mean levels of mercury (0.1715 ± 0.0857 mg/kg, ww) and arsenic (1.139 ± 0.350 mg/kg, ww) were detected in horse mackerel. The higher mean amounts of cadmium (0.0084 ± 0.0036 mg/kg, ww) and lead (0.0379 ± 0.0303 mg/kg, ww) were determined in chub mackerel and in sardine, respectively. Intra- and inter-specific variability of metals bioaccumulation was statistically assessed and species and length revealed to be the major influencing biometric factors, in particular for mercury and arsenic. Muscles present metal concentrations below the tolerable limits considered by European Commission Regulation and Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations/World Health Organization (FAO/WHO). However, estimation of non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic health risks by the target hazard quotient and target carcinogenic risk, established by the US Environmental Protection Agency, suggests that these species must be eaten in moderation due to possible hazard and carcinogenic risks derived from arsenic (in all analyzed species) and mercury ingestion (in horse and chub mackerel species).

Abstract
The COMPASS experiment at the CERN SPS has studied the diffractive dissociation of negative pions into the π- π- π+ final state using a 190 GeV/c pion beam hitting a lead target. A partial wave analysis has been performed on a sample of 420,000 events taken at values of the squared 4-momentum transfer t' between 0.1 and 1 GeV2/c2. The well-known resonances a1(1260), a2(1320), and π2(1670) are clearly observed. In addition, the data show a significant natural-parity exchange production of a resonance with spin-exotic quantum numbers J(PC)=1-+ at 1.66 GeV/c2 decaying to ρπ. The resonant nature of this wave is evident from the mass-dependent phase differences to the J(PC)=2-+ and 1++ waves. From a mass-dependent fit a resonance mass of (1660±10(-64)(+0)) MeV/c2 and a width of (269±21(-64)(+42)) MeV/c2 are deduced, with an intensity of (1.7±0.2)% of the total intensity.

Abstract
We present a case of a previously asymptomatic 34-year-old man that presented to the emergency department with two weeks of fever, arthralgia of the wrists and knees and sore throat. He was diagnosed with cytomegalovirus (CMV) mononucleosis. The patient remained symptomatic in the 5 following months. After an extensive workup to exclude other clinical conditions, a liver biopsy was performed and CMV hepatitis was diagnosed. He started valganciclovir therapy. Approximately one year after the initial complaints, the patient remained ill and presented clinical criteria compatible with Adult Onset Still's Disease. The patient had a marked improvement after institution of prednisolone, an effect that has been sustained during the following months.

Abstract
AIM OF THE STUDY The present study was carried out to investigate analgesic and anti-inflammatory activities of Cassia siamea Lam stem bark extracts. We have also determined the cytotoxicity of each extract. MATERIALS AND METHODS C. siamea, a widespread medicinal plant traditionally used in sub-Saharan Africa, was collected in Congo Brazzaville. Stem bark was extracted with petroleum ether (CSE1), chloroform (CSE2), ethanol (CSE3) and water (CSE4). Analgesic, anti-inflammatory and antipyretic activities of these extracts were assessed in rats with hot plate test, paw pressure and carrageenan induced paw oedema. Cytotoxicity was assessed against KB and Vero cells. RESULTS At the doses used (100, 200, and 400mg/kg) ethanol and water extracts showed significant and dose-dependent analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects. None of the extracts had cytotoxic activity on KB and Vero cell lines and the most active extracts (CSE3 and CSE4) had no acute toxicity. CONCLUSIONS The study highlighted the analgesic and anti-inflammatory of C. siamea stem bark. Four major families of compounds present in the plant may explain these activities: triterpenes (lupeol, oleanolic acid, ursolic acid, friedelin, betulin), flavonoids (apigenin, kaempferol, luteolin), anthraquinones (emodin), phytosterols (stigmasterol, beta-sitosterol).
