Abstract
Prion diseases still remain incurable despite multiple efforts to develop a treatment. Therefore, it is important to find strategies to at least reduce the symptoms. Lithium has been considered as a neuroprotective agent for years, and the objective of this preclinical study was to evaluate the efficacy of lithium delivered as a water-in-oil microemulsion (Aonys®). This delivery system allows using low doses of lithium and to avoid the toxicity observed in chronic treatments. C57BL/6J mice were intracranially inoculated with ME7 prion-infected brain homogenates and then were treated with lithium from day 90 post inoculation until their death. Lithium was administered at traditional doses (16 mg/kg/day) by the gavage route and at lower doses (40 or 160 µg/kg/day; Aonys®) by the rectal mucosa route. Low doses of lithium (Aonys®) improved the survival of prion-inoculated mice, and also decreased vacuolization, astrogliosis, and neuronal loss compared with controls (vehicle alone). The extent of the protective effects in mice treated with low-dose lithium was comparable or even higher than what was observed in mice that received lithium at the traditional dose. These results indicate that lithium administered using this innovative delivery system could represent a potential therapeutic approach not only for prion diseases but also for other neurodegenerative diseases.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Foster children have a high risk of mental disorders. This has contributed to increased international attention to service utilization for youth in foster care. The aim of this study is to examine whether youth in foster care receive services according to need, by using a multi-informant design. METHOD Detailed information on the type and frequency of service use during the last 2 years and on youth mental health were collected from foster youths and their carers in Norway (n = 405, aged 11-17 years) through online questionnaires. Mental health was assessed with the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire. Statistical analyses were conducted using descriptive statistics and log-binominal regressions. RESULTS In total, 48.8% of foster youths showed evidence of mental health problems, and 74.5% of foster families had contact with services. Increased mental health problems and living in non-kin foster care were associated with more service use. Youths with mental health problems had twice the probability of receiving services from the child and adolescent mental health service (CAMHS) and primary health care services compared to youths without problems. However, 57.0% of youths with carer-reported mental health problems did not have contact with CAMHS. CONCLUSIONS Service use among foster youths was associated with service need rather than demographic and placement characteristics. The majority of youths with mental health problems did not receive services from CAMHS. However, many of them were in contact with primary health care services.

Abstract
We report the development of nanowire field-effect transistors featuring an ultrathin parylene film as a polymer gate insulator. The room temperature, gas-phase deposition of parylene is an attractive alternative to oxide insulators prepared at high temperatures using atomic layer deposition. We discuss our custom-built parylene deposition system, which is designed for reliable and controlled deposition of <100 nm thick parylene films on III-V nanowires standing vertically on a growth substrate or horizontally on a device substrate. The former case gives conformally coated nanowires, which we used to produce functional Ω-gate and gate-all-around structures. These give subthreshold swings as low as 140 mV/dec and on/off ratios exceeding 103 at room temperature. For the gate-all-around structure, we developed a novel fabrication strategy that overcomes some of the limitations with previous lateral wrap-gate nanowire transistors. Finally, we show that parylene can be deposited over chemically treated nanowire surfaces, a feature generally not possible with oxides produced by atomic layer deposition due to the surface "self-cleaning" effect. Our results highlight the potential for parylene as an alternative ultrathin insulator in nanoscale electronic devices more broadly, with potential applications extending into nanobioelectronics due to parylene's well-established biocompatible properties.

Abstract
AIMS Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is characterized by degeneration of motoneurons and progressive muscle wasting. Inflammatory processes, mediated by non-neuronal cells, such as glial cells, are known to contribute to disease progression. Inflammasomes consist of pattern recognition receptors (PRRs), apoptosis-associated speck-like protein (ASC) and caspase 1 and are essential for interleukin (IL) processing and a rapid immune response after tissue damage. Recently, we described inflammasome activation in the spinal cord of ALS patients and in SOD1(G93A) ALS mice. Since pathological changes in the skeletal muscle are early events in ALS, we hypothesized that PRRs might be abnormally expressed in muscle fibre degeneration. METHODS Western blot analysis, real-time PCR and immunohistochemistry were performed with muscle tissue from presymptomatic and early-symptomatic male SOD1(G93A) mice and with muscle biopsies of control and sporadic ALS (sALS) patients. Analysed PRRs include nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain-like (NOD-like) receptor protein 1 (NLRP1), NLR protein 3 (NLRP3), NLR family CARD domain-containing 4 (NLRC4) and absent in melanoma 2. Additionally, expression levels of ASC, caspase 1, interleukin 1 beta (IL1β) and interleukin 18 (IL18) were evaluated. RESULTS Expression of PRRs and ASC was detected in murine and human tissue. The PRR NLRC4, caspase 1 and IL1β were significantly elevated in denervated muscle of SOD1(G93A) mice and sALS patients. Furthermore, levels of caspase 1 and IL1β were already increased in presymptomatic animals. CONCLUSION Our findings suggest that increased inflammasome activation may be involved in skeletal muscle pathology in ALS. Furthermore, elevated levels of NLRC4, caspase 1 and IL1β reflect early changes in the skeletal muscle and may contribute to the denervation process.

Abstract
It has recently been found that anti-Stokes photoluminescence can be observed in degenerately n-doped indium phosphide nanowires, when exciting directly into the electron gas. This anti-Stokes mechanism has not been observed before and allows the study of carrier relaxation and recombination using standard photoluminescence techniques. It is important to know if this anti-Stokes photoluminescence also occurs in bulk semiconductors as well as its relation to carrier recombination and relaxation. Here we show that similar anti-Stokes photoluminescence can indeed be observed in degenerately doped bulk indium phosphide and gallium arsenide and is caused by minority carriers scattering to high momenta by phonons. We find in addition that the radiative electron-hole recombination is highly momentum-conserving and that photogenerated minority carriers recombine before relaxing to the band edge at low temperatures. These observations challenge the use of models assuming thermalization of minority carriers in the analysis of highly doped devices. Anti-Stokes luminescence - the emission of photons with higher energy than those absorbed – in nanomaterials is widely used for optoelectronic applications. Here the authors observe it in degenerately doped bulk InP and GaAs, indicating it as a more general property of direct bandgap semiconductors.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Patients with rheumatic disease (RD) have an increased mortality risk compared with the general population, mainly due to cardiovascular disease (CVD). We aimed to identify patients at high risk of CVD and mortality by comparing three screening tools suitable for clinical practice. METHOD In this prospective, single-centre study, consecutive patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), systemic autoimmune disease (SAI), or spondyloarthritides (SpA) including psoriatic arthritis underwent a comprehensive cardiovascular risk assessment. Patients were predefined as being at high risk for cardiovascular events or death if any of the following were present: European Systematic COronary Risk Evaluation (SCORE) ≥ 3%, N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) ≥ 200 pg/mL, or any pathological electrocardiogram pattern. RESULTS The patient population (n = 764) comprised 352 patients with RA, 260 with SAI, and 152 with SpA. After a median follow-up of 5.2 years, 6.0% of RD patients had died (7.0%, 7.2%, and 1.4% of patients in the RA, SAI, and SpA subgroups), and 5.0% had experienced a cardiovascular event (5.0%, 6.4%, and 2.8%, respectively). For all RD patients and the RA and SAI subgroups, NT-proBNP ≥ 200 pg/mL and SCORE ≥ 3% identified patients with a 3.5-5-fold increased risk of all-cause death and cardiovascular events. Electrocardiogram pathology was associated with increased mortality risk, but not with cardiovascular events. CONCLUSION NT-proBNP ≥ 200 pg/mL or SCORE ≥ 3% identifies RA and SAI patients with increased risk of cardiovascular events and death. Both tools are suitable as easy screening tools in daily practice to identify patients at risk for further diagnostics and closer long-term follow-up.

Abstract
The porosity of spacer-filled feed channels influences the hydrodynamics of spiral-wound membrane systems and impacts the overall performance of the system. Therefore, an exact measurement and a detailed understanding of the impact of the feed channel porosity is required to understand and improve the hydrodynamics of spiral-wound membrane systems applied for desalination and wastewater reuse. The objectives of this study were to assess the accuracy of porosity measurement techniques for feed spacers differing in geometry and thickness and the consequences of using an inaccurate method on hydrodynamic predictions, which may affect permeate production. Six techniques were applied to measure the porosity namely, three volumetric techniques based on spacer strand count together with a cuboidal (SC), cylindrical (VCC) and ellipsoidal volume calculation (VCE) and three independent techniques based on volume displacement (VD), weight and density (WD) and computed tomography (CT) scanning. The CT method was introduced as an alternative for the other five already existing and applied methods in practice. Six feed spacers used for the porosity measurement differed in filament thickness, angle between the filaments and mesh-size. The results of the studies showed differences between the porosities, measured by the six methods. The results of the microscopic techniques SC, VCC and VCE deviated significantly from measurements by VD, WD and CT, which showed similar porosity values for all spacer types. Depending on the maximum deviation of the porosity measurement techniques from -6% to +6%, (i) the linear velocity deviations were -5.6% and +6.4% respectively and (ii) the pressure drop deviations were -31% and +43% respectively, illustrating the importance of an accurate porosity measurement. Because of the accuracy and standard deviation, the VD and WD method should be applied for the porosity determination of spacer-filled channels, while the CT method is recommended for numerical modelling purposes. The porosity has a linear relationship with the flow velocity and a superlinear effect on the pressure drop. Accurate porosity data are essential to evaluate feed spacer performance in spiral-wound membrane systems. Porosity of spacer-filled feed channels has a strong impact on membrane performance and biofouling impact.

Abstract
Mental health problems are common in foster-children, and tools to measure the mental health of these children are needed. One candidate instrument is the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ), a measure of child psychological adjustment that is increasingly being employed by Child Protection services. The aim of the current study was to examine the structural validity of the foster parent completed SDQ in a sample of 237 school aged foster children. Confirmatory factor analysis demonstrated an excellent fit of the foster parent completed SDQ data to a five-factor model (CFI = 0.96, RMSEA = 0.05, 90% CI [0.04, 0.06]), thus confirming the structural validity of the five-factor model for the parent-version of the SDQ in Norwegian foster children. Measurement invariance analyses indicated that boys had lower thresholds for fighting with or bullying other children than girls. Girls were on their side more likely to be rated as less popular than boys with a similar level of peer problems.

Abstract
The Région Languedoc Roussillon is the umbrella organisation for an interconnected and integrated project on active and healthy ageing (AHA). It covers the 3 pillars of the European Innovation Partnership on Active and Healthy Ageing (EIP on AHA): (A) Prevention and health promotion, (B) Care and cure, (C) and (D) Active and independent living of elderly people. All sub-activities (poly-pharmacy, falls prevention initiative, prevention of frailty, chronic respiratory diseases, chronic diseases with multimorbidities, chronic infectious diseases, active and independent living and disability) have been included in MACVIA-LR which has a strong political commitment and involves all stakeholders (public, private, patients, policy makers) including CARSAT-LR and the Eurobiomed cluster. It is a Reference Site of the EIP on AHA. The framework of MACVIA-LR has the vision that the prevention and management of chronic diseases is essential for the promotion of AHA and for the reduction of handicap. The main objectives of MACVIA-LR are: (i) to develop innovative solutions for a network of Living labs in order to reduce avoidable hospitalisations and loss of autonomy while improving quality of life, (ii) to disseminate the innovation. The three years of MACVIA-LR activities are reported in this paper.
