Atomistic Studies on Water-Induced Lithium Corrosion

It is well known that lithium reacts violently with water under the release of molecular hydrogen and the formation of lithium hydroxide. In this work, the initial mechanisms for the surface reactions of metallic lithium with water from the gas phase were investigated by means of periodic density functional theory calculations. For this purpose, adsorption/absorption structures and diffusion and dissociation processes of hydrogen, OH, and H₂ O on low-index metallic lithium surfaces were investigated. Through thermodynamic and kinetic considerations, negatively charged centers on the surface were identified as the origin of hydrogen formation. The strikingly low reaction barriers for the reaction at these centers implied a self-supporting effect of hydrogen evolution and the associated lithium degradation.

A Modular Atom Probe Concept: Design, Operational Aspects, and Performance of an Integrated APT-FIB/SEM Solution

Atomic probe tomography (APT) is able to generate three-dimensional chemical maps in atomic resolution. The required instruments for APT have evolved over the last 20 years from an experimental to an established method of materials analysis. Here, we describe the realization of a new modular instrument concept that allows the direct attachment of APT to a dual-beam SEM microscope with the main achievement of fast and direct sample transfer and high flexibility in chamber and component configuration. New operational modes are enabled regarding sample geometry, alignment of tips, and the microelectrode. The instrument is optimized to handle cryo-samples at all stages of preparation and storage. It comes with its own software for evaluation and reconstruction. The performance in terms of mass resolution, aperture angle, and detection efficiency is demonstrated with a few application examples.

Structural Evolution of Pt, Au and Cu Anodes by Electrolysis up to Contact Glow Discharge Electrolysis in Alkaline Electrolytes*

Applying a voltage to metal electrodes in contact with aqueous electrolytes results in the electrolysis of water at voltages above the decomposition voltage and plasma formation in the electrolyte at much higher voltages referred to as contact glow discharge electrolysis (CGDE). While several studies explore parameters that lead to changes in the I–U characteristics in this voltage range, little is known about the evolution of the structural properties of the electrodes. Here we study this aspect on materials essential to electrocatalysis, namely Pt, Au, and Cu. The stationary I–U characteristics are almost identical for all electrodes. Detailed structural characterization by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and electrochemical approaches reveal that Pt is stable during electrolysis and CGDE, while Au and Cu exhibit a voltage‐dependent oxide formation. More importantly, oxides are reduced when the Au and Cu electrodes are kept in the electrolysis solution after electrolysis. We suspect that H₂O₂ (formed during electrolysis) is responsible for the oxide reduction. The reduced oxides (which are also accessible via electrochemical reduction) form a porous film, representing a possible new class of materials in energy storage and conversion studies.

Spike residue 403 affects binding of coronavirus spikes to human ACE2

The bat sarbecovirus RaTG13 is a close relative of SARS-CoV-2, the cause of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, this bat virus was most likely unable to directly infect humans since its Spike (S) protein does not interact efficiently with the human ACE2 receptor. Here, we show that a single T403R mutation increases binding of RaTG13 S to human ACE2 and allows VSV pseudoparticle infection of human lung cells and intestinal organoids. Conversely, mutation of R403T in the SARS-CoV-2 S reduces pseudoparticle infection and viral replication. The T403R RaTG13 S is neutralized by sera from individuals vaccinated against COVID-19 indicating that vaccination might protect against future zoonoses. Our data suggest that a positively charged amino acid at position 403 in the S protein is critical for efficient utilization of human ACE2 by S proteins of bat coronaviruses. This finding could help to better predict the zoonotic potential of animal coronaviruses.

UV Hyperspectral Imaging as Process Analytical Tool for the Characterization of Oxide Layers and Copper States on Direct Bonded Copper

Hyperspectral imaging and reflectance spectroscopy in the range from 200–380 nm were used to rapidly detect and characterize copper oxidation states and their layer thicknesses on direct bonded copper in a non-destructive way. Single-point UV reflectance spectroscopy, as a well-established method, was utilized to compare the quality of the hyperspectral imaging results. For the laterally resolved measurements of the copper surfaces an UV hyperspectral imaging setup based on a pushbroom imager was used. Six different types of direct bonded copper were studied. Each type had a different oxide layer thickness and was analyzed by depth profiling using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. In total, 28 samples were measured to develop multivariate models to characterize and predict the oxide layer thicknesses. The principal component analysis models (PCA) enabled a general differentiation between the sample types on the first two PCs with 100.0% and 96% explained variance for UV spectroscopy and hyperspectral imaging, respectively. Partial least squares regression (PLS-R) models showed reliable performance with R²_c = 0.94 and 0.94 and RMSEC = 1.64 nm and 1.76 nm, respectively. The developed in-line prototype system combined with multivariate data modeling shows high potential for further development of this technique towards real large-scale processes.

Multifunctional Polyoxometalate Platforms for Supramolecular Light-Driven Hydrogen Evolution*

Multifunctional supramolecular systems are a central research topic in light‐driven solar energy conversion. Here, we report a polyoxometalate (POM)‐based supramolecular dyad, where two platinum‐complex hydrogen evolution catalysts are covalently anchored to an Anderson polyoxomolybdate anion. Supramolecular electrostatic coupling of the system to an iridium photosensitizer enables visible light‐driven hydrogen evolution. Combined theory and experiment demonstrate the multifunctionality of the POM, which acts as photosensitizer/catalyst‐binding‐site^[1] and facilitates light‐induced charge‐transfer and catalytic turnover. Chemical modification of the Pt‐catalyst site leads to increased hydrogen evolution reactivity. Mechanistic studies shed light on the role of the individual components and provide a molecular understanding of the interactions which govern stability and reactivity. The system could serve as a blueprint for multifunctional polyoxometalates in energy conversion and storage.

Assessment of the Accuracy of Density Functionals for Calculating Oxygen Reduction Reaction on Nitrogen-Doped Graphene

Experimental studies of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) at nitrogen-doped graphene electrodes have reported a remarkably low overpotential, on the order of 0.5 V, similar to Pt-based electrodes. Theoretical calculations using density functional theory have lent support to this claim. However, other measurements have indicated that transition metal impurities are actually responsible for the ORR activity, thereby raising questions about the reliability of both the experiments and the calculations. To assess the accuracy of the theoretical calculations, various generalized gradient approximation (GGA), meta-GGA, and hybrid functionals are employed here and calibrated against high-level wave-function-based coupled-cluster calculations (CCSD(T)) of the overpotential as well as self-interaction corrected density functional calculations and published quantum Monte Carlo calculations of O adatom binding to graphene. The PBE0 and HSE06 hybrid functionals are found to give more accurate results than the GGA and meta-GGA functionals, as would be expected, and for a low dopant concentration, 3.1%, the overpotential is calculated to be 1.0 V. The GGA and meta-GGA functionals give a lower estimate by as much as 0.4 V. When the dopant concentration is doubled, the overpotential calculated with hybrid functionals decreases, while it increases in GGA functional calculations. The opposite trends result from different potential-determining steps, the *OOH species being of central importance in the hybrid functional calculations, while the reduction of *O determines the overpotential obtained in GGA and meta-GGA calculations. The results presented here are mainly based on calculations of periodic representations of the system, but a comparison is also made with molecular flake models that are found to give erratic results due to finite size effects and geometric distortions during energy minimization. The presence of the electrolyte has not been taken into account explicitly in the calculations presented here but is estimated to be important for definitive calculations of the overpotential.

Versatile 3D-Printed Micro-Reference Electrodes for Aqueous and Non-Aqueous Solutions

While numerous reference electrodes suitable for aqueous electrolytes exist, there is no well-defined standard for non-aqueous electrolytes. Furthermore, reference electrodes are often large and do not meet the size requirements for small cells. In this work, we present a simple method for fabricating stable 3D-printed micro-reference electrodes. The prints are made from polyvinylidene fluoride, which is chemically inert in strong acids, bases, and commonly used non-aqueous solvents. We chose six different reference systems based on Ag, Cu, Zn, and Na, including three aqueous and three non-aqueous systems to demonstrate the versatility of the approach. Subsequently, we conducted cyclic voltammetry experiments and measured the potential difference between the aqueous homemade reference electrodes and a commercial Ag/AgCl-electrode. For the non-aqueous reference electrodes, we chose the ferrocene redox couple as an internal standard. From these measurements, we deduced that this new class of micro-reference electrodes is leak-tight and shows a stable electrode potential.

A Study in Red: The Overlooked Role of Azo-Moieties in Polymeric Carbon Nitride Photocatalysts with Strongly Extended Optical Absorption

The unique optical and photoredox properties of heptazine‐based polymeric carbon nitride (PCN) materials make them promising semiconductors for driving various productive photocatalytic conversions. However, their typical absorption onset at ca. 430–450 nm is still far from optimum for efficient sunlight harvesting. Despite many reports of successful attempts to extend the light absorption range of PCNs, the determination of the structural features responsible for the red shift of the light absorption edge beyond 450 nm has often been obstructed by the highly disordered structure of PCNs and/or low content of the moieties responsible for changes in optical and electronic properties. In this work, we implement a high‐temperature (900 °C) treatment procedure for turning the conventional melamine‐derived yellow PCN into a red carbon nitride. This approach preserves the typical PCN structure but incorporates a new functionality that promotes visible light absorption. A detailed characterization of the prepared material reveals that partial heptazine fragmentation accompanied by de‐ammonification leads to the formation of azo‐groups in the red PCN, a chromophore moiety whose role in shifting the optical absorption edge of PCNs has been overlooked so far. These azo moieties can be activated under visible‐light (470 nm) for H₂ evolution even without any additional co‐catalyst, but are also responsible for enhanced charge‐trapping and radiative recombination, as shown by spectroscopic studies.

Elastic Collision Based Dynamic Partitioning Scheme for Hybrid Simulations

In hybrid simulations, such as the QM/MM approach, the system is partitioned into regions that are treated at different levels of theory. The key question then becomes how to evaluate the interactions between particles on opposite sides of the boundary. One approach is to place the boundary in such a way that particles near the boundary on both sides are of the same type, thus simplifying the evaluation of the interactions. If mobile particles are present, such as solvent molecules, and particles are allowed to cross the boundary, the conservation of energy and atomic forces is problematic unless the computational effort is increased significantly. By preventing particles from crossing the boundary but allowing the boundary to be flexible, an accurate estimate of average thermodynamic properties is obtained in principle as illustrated by the flexible inner region ensemble separator (FIRES) method [C. Rowley and B. Roux, J. Chem. Theory Comput. 2012, 8, 3526]. In FIRES, a harmonic restraint is applied to particles near the boundary. Therefore, it can occur that particle cross the boundary to some extent resulting in anomalies in the particle density. Here, a constraint approach is presented where particles instantaneously scatter from the boundary. This scattering-adapted FIRES (SAFIRES) implementation makes use of a variable-time-step propagation algorithm where the time step is scaled automatically to identify the moment a collision should occur. If the length of the time step is kept constant, this propagator reduces to a regular Langevin dynamics algorithm, and to the velocity Verlet algorithm for conservative dynamics if the friction coefficient is set to zero. Correct average ensemble statistics are obtained as demonstrated in simulations where, for testing purposes, the particles in the two regions are treated at the same level of theory, namely, a homogeneous Lennard-Jones (LJ) liquid and liquid water based on the TIP4P potential function. In order to illustrate this approach in solid-liquid interface simulations, a LJ liquid in contact with the surface of a crystal is also simulated. The simulations using SAFIRES are shown to reproduce the unconstrained reference simulations without significant deviations in the particle density and the dynamics are shown to conserve energy when coupling to the heat bath is turned off.

Electrodeposition of Zinc onto Au(111) and Au(100) from the Ionic Liquid [MPPip][TFSI]

The improvement of rechargeable zinc/air batteries was a hot topic in recent years. Predominantly, the influence of water and additives on the structure of the Zn deposit and the possible dendrite formation were studied. However, the effect of the surface structure of the underlying substrate was not focused on in detail, yet. We now show the differences in electrochemical deposition of Zn onto Au(111) and Au(100) from the ionic liquid N‐methyl‐N‐propylpiperidinium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide. The fundamental processes were initially characterized via cyclic voltammetry and in situ scanning tunnelling microscopy. Bulk deposits were then examined using Auger electron spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Different structures of Zn deposits are observed during the initial stages of electrocrystallisation on both electrodes, which reveals the strong influence of the crystallographic orientation on the metal deposition of zinc on gold.

Use of Hyperspectral Imaging for the Quantification of Organic Contaminants on Copper Surfaces for Electronic Applications

To correctly assess the cleanliness of technical surfaces in a production process, corresponding online monitoring systems must provide sufficient data. A promising method for fast, large-area, and non-contact monitoring is hyperspectral imaging (HSI), which was used in this paper for the detection and quantification of organic surface contaminations. Depending on the cleaning parameter constellation, different levels of organic residues remained on the surface. Afterwards, the cleanliness was determined by the carbon content in the atom percent on the sample surfaces, characterized by XPS and AES. The HSI data and the XPS measurements were correlated, using machine learning methods, to generate a predictive model for the carbon content of the surface. The regression algorithms elastic net, random forest regression, and support vector machine regression were used. Overall, the developed method was able to quantify organic contaminations on technical surfaces. The best regression model found was a random forest model, which achieved an R² of 0.7 and an RMSE of 7.65 At.-% C. Due to the easy-to-use measurement and the fast evaluation by machine learning, the method seems suitable for an online monitoring system. However, the results also show that further experiments are necessary to improve the quality of the prediction models.

Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation (PEO) Process-Processing, Properties, and Applications

Plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) is a novel surface treatment process to produce thick, dense metal oxide coatings, especially on light metals, primarily to improve their wear and corrosion resistance. The coating manufactured from the PEO process is relatively superior to normal anodic oxidation. It is widely employed in the fields of mechanical, petrochemical, and biomedical industries, to name a few. Several investigations have been carried out to study the coating performance developed through the PEO process in the past. This review attempts to summarize and explain some of the fundamental aspects of the PEO process, mechanism of coating formation, the processing conditions that impact the process, the main characteristics of the process, the microstructures evolved in the coating, the mechanical and tribological properties of the coating, and the influence of environmental conditions on the coating process. Recently, the PEO process has also been employed to produce nanocomposite coatings by incorporating nanoparticles in the electrolyte. This review also narrates some of the recent developments in the field of nanocomposite coatings with examples and their applications. Additionally, some of the applications of the PEO coatings have been demonstrated. Moreover, the significance of the PEO process, its current trends, and its scope of future work are highlighted.

157 A Rare Case of Cutaneous-Urachovesicoenteric Fistula in a Patient with Crohn’s Disease

Background

Entero-Uracho Vesicle fistulae are a rare sequelae of aggressive Crohn’s disease with only a small number of case reports being available in the literature. Such cases are most often managed via “SSNAP” principles with many Crohn’s fistulas requiring complex surgical intervention to definitively deal with the offending fistulous tracts. We present a case with an even rarer consequence of uncontrolled Crohn’s disease despite immunomodulatory therapy in a 34-year-old male who presented with a Entero-Uracho Vesicle fistula. We discuss the presenting symptoms and management protocol involved in this case.

Case:

A 34-year-old male with known Crohn’s disease presented with an entero-uracho vesicle fistula, which further developed into a cutenaous-urachovesicoenteric fistula while awaiting surgery during his index admission. The fistula tract was confirmed via Computed Tomography with evidence of significant inflammation. Bowel rest, antibiotics, and nutritional support with Total Parenteral Nutrition preceded total excision of the fistulous tract with ileo-caecal resection of the diseased bowel with primary anastomosis, and resection of the urachus and closure of the cutaneous fistula site with desirable outcome. Patient completed a full-recovery with return of normal bowel function and nutritional status, with no delayed complications at 6-month follow-up.

Electrocatalytic Oxygen Evolution by Hierarchically Structured Cobalt-Iron Composites

The development of scalable routes to highly active and efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts based on earth-abundant materials is crucial for post-fossil fuel energy schemes. Here, we demonstrate how commercial copper foam electrodes can be functionalized for water oxidation using a facile electrodeposition process. The resulting composite electrode features hierarchically structured cobalt-iron-based catalyst particles, which offer channel-like structures for the transport of electrolyte and release of oxygen gas bubbles. We report high electrocatalytic OER performance as demonstrated by high current densities at low overpotentials (293 mV at j = 50 mA cm^-2) and long-term stability under technologically relevant alkaline conditions (>24 h in 1.0 M aqueous KOH).

Density Functional Theory Studies on Sulfur-Polyacrylonitrile as a Cathode Host Material for Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

Cyclized polyacrylonitrile, which can be obtained by vulcanization of polyacrylonitrile with sulfur, is an electron-conductive polymer that can be used as a host material in lithium-sulfur batteries. Using density functional theory, we investigated the interaction between a surrounding electrolyte and the polymeric sulfur-polyacrylonitrile (SPAN) electrode. In particular, we focused on different configurations, where the system contains 1,3-dioxane as a solvent and can have (i) polysulfide (PS) solvated in the electrolyte, (ii) a PS attached to the polymer backbone, (iii) lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI) as a salt dissolved in the electrolyte, and (iv) both PS and LiTFSI dissolved in the electrolyte. We found that the polymer, when having a hydrogen vacancy at a carbon atom (undercoordinated carbon) of the polymer backbone, is able to not only capture a PS from the electrolyte but also decompose and bind to the solvent and/or remove lithium from the PS. During this capturing process, the polysulfide might undergo S-S bond cleavage and recombination, accompanied by a charge transfer between the polysulfide and polymer. Thus, cyclized polyacrylonitrile not only is an interesting host material but also acts as an active material, together with sulfur, by capturing Li from the polysulfide.
