MIL-101(Cr) MOF as an Effective Siloxane Sensor

Volatile methylsiloxanes (VMSs) are common silicone degradation byproducts that cause serious concern for the contamination of sensitive electronics and optics, among others. With the goal of fast, online detection of VMS, we herein highlight the mesoporous MIL-101(Cr) MOF as a promising mass sensing layer for integration with a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM), using an in-house modified gravimetric adsorption system capable of achieving extremely low concentrations of siloxane D4 (down to 0.04 ppm), targeting applications for monitoring in indoor spaces and spacecraft. Our developed MIL-101(Cr)@QCM sensor achieves near-perfect reversibility with no hysteresis alongside excellent repeatability over cycling and fast response/recovery times under 1 min. We attribute this capability to optimum host/guest interactions as uncovered through molecular simulations.

High-Sensitivity and Environmentally Friendly Humidity Sensors Deposited with Recyclable Green Microspheres for Wireless Monitoring

The reliable, high-sensitive, wireless, and affordable requirements for humidity sensors are needed in high-precision measurement fields. Quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) based on the piezoelectric effect can accurately detect the mass changes at the nanogram level. However, water-capture materials deposited on the surface of QCM generally show disadvantages in either cost, sensitivity, or recyclability. Herein, novel QCM-based humidity sensors (NQHSs) are developed by uniformly depositing green microspheres (GMs) of natural polymers prepared by the chemical synthesis of the emulsification/inner gel method on QCM as humidity-sensitive materials. The NQHSs demonstrate high accuracy and sensitivity (27.1 Hz/% RH) owing to the various hydrophilic groups and porous nano-3D deposition structure. Compared with the devices deposited with a smooth film, the frequency of the NQHSs shows almost no changes during the cyclic test and exhibits long-term stability. The NQHSs have been successfully applied to non-contact sensing human activities and remote real-time humidity monitoring via Bluetooth transmission. In addition, the deposited humidity-sensitive GMs and QCM substrate are fully recycled and reused (72% of the original value). This work has provided an innovative idea to construct environmental-friendly, high-sensitivity, and wireless humidity sensors.

Mycotoxins detection: view in the lens of molecularly imprinted polymer and nanoparticles

Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) are tailor-made functional composites which selectively recognize and bind the target molecule of interest. MIP composites are products of the massively cross-linked polymer matrices, generated via polymerization, with bio-inspired recognition cavities that are morphologically similar in size, shape and spatial patterns to the target conformation. These features have enabled researchers to expand the field of molecular recognition, more specifically for target with peculiar requirements. Nevertheless, MIPs alone are characterized with weak sensitivity. Besides, nanoparticles (NPs) are remarkably sensitive but also suffer from poor selectivity. Intriguingly, the combination of the two results in a highly sensitive and selective MIP composite. For instance, the conjugation of different functional NPs with MIPs can generate new flexible target capture tools, either a dynamic sensor or a novel drug delivery system. In this regard, although the technology is considered an established and feasible approach, it is still perceived as a burgeoning technology for various fields, which makes it unceasingly worthy reviewing. Therefore, in this review, we attempt to give an update on various custom-made biosensors based on MIPs in combination with various NPs for the detection of mycotoxins, the toxic secondary metabolites of fungi. We first summarize the classification, prevalence, and toxicological characteristics of common mycotoxins. Next, we provide an overview of MIP composites and their characterization, and then segment the role of NPs with respect to common types of MIP-based sensors. At last, conclusions and outlook are discussed.

Effect of Conformation of Sugar Beet Pectin on the Interfacial and Emulsifying Properties

The influence of the conformation of sugar beet pectin (SBP) on the interfacial and emulsifying properties was investigated. The colloidal properties of SBP, such as zeta potential and hydrodynamic diameter, were characterized at different pH levels. Furthermore, pendant drop tensiometry and quartz crystal microgravimetry were used to study adsorption behavior (adsorbed mass and adsorption rate) and stabilizing mechanism (layer thickness and interfacial tension). A more compact conformation resulted in a faster reduction of interfacial tension, higher adsorbed mass, and a thicker adsorption layer. In addition, emulsions were prepared at varying conditions (pH 3-5) and formulations (1-30 wt% MCT oil, 0.1-2 wt% SBP), and their droplet size distributions were measured. The smallest oil droplets could be stabilized at pH 3. However, significantly more pectin was required at pH 3 compared to pH 4 or 5 to sufficiently stabilize the oil droplets. Both phenomena were attributed to the more compact conformation of SBP at pH < pKa: On the one hand, pectins adsorbed faster and in greater quantity, forming a thicker interfacial layer. On the other hand, they covered less interfacial area per SBP molecule. Therefore, the SBP concentration must be chosen appropriately depending on the conformation.

Measurement of polystyrene photodegradation rate using a quartz crystal microbalance

Polystyrene is a very popular polymer utilised in the manufacture of various consumer products. This polymer is very cheap; however, after its usage, the slowness of its photodegradation leads to environmental pollution. In this report, the author presents a technique to systematically measure the rate of photodegradation of a thin polystyrene film. The said film was made to coat a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) sensor. In order to detect polymer degradation and the reduction in the molecular weight, the resonance frequency of the sensor was monitored for 24 h. Results revealed that QCM sensor irradiation with ultraviolet light with a wavelength of 365 nm and optical power of 1.5 mW caused a quite significant change in the polymer structure.

Detection of Oenological Polyphenols via QCM-D Measurements

Polyphenols are a family of compounds present in grapes, musts, and wines. Their dosage is associated with the grape ripening, correct must fermentation, and final wine properties. Owing to their anti-inflammatory properties, they are also relevant for health applications. To date, such compounds are detected mainly via standard chemical analysis, which is costly for constant monitoring and requires a specialized laboratory. Cheap and portable sensors would be desirable to reduce costs and speed up measurements. This paper illustrates the development of strategies for sensor surface chemical functionalization for polyphenol detection. We perform measurements by using a commercial quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring apparatus. Chemical functionalizations are based on proteins (bovine serum albumin and gelatin type A) or customized peptides derived from istatine-5 and murine salivary protein-5. Commercial oenological additives containing pure gallic tannins or proanthocyanidins, dissolved in water or commercial wine, are used for the analysis. Results indicate that selected functionalizations enable the detection of the two different tannin families, suggesting a relationship between the recorded signal and concentration. Gelatin A also demonstrates the ability to discriminate gallic tannins from proanthocyanidins. Outcomes are promising and pave the way for the exploitation of such devices for precision oenology.

Conducting polymer-based sensors for food and drug analysis

Conducting polymers (CPs) are a category of polymeric materials with conjugated main chains. The characteristic electrical and optical properties of CPs can be fine-tuned through controlling the doping states of CPs. Because of their long-term stability in water, CPs have been demonstrated as electroactive biointerfaces and electrode materials especially in aqueous environments. Serving as multifunctional interfaces and organic electrodes for the integration bioelectronics and devices, CPs have been studied and applied in various biological applications. This paper provides a review of conducting polymer-based electrochemical sensors, particularly those used in biological fields. General conducting polymers and derivatives and their main electrochemical sensing platforms with different design of devices are introduced. Cyclic voltammetry, differential pulse voltammetry, chronoamperometry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and quartz crystal microbalance methods and their features are then explored as detection methods for the analysis of drugs and food. To enhance the sensitivity and lower the detection limit of sensing platforms, various CP-based nanocomposites have been designed and developed. Although the electrodes made of CP-based nanocomposites usually outperform those made of pristine CPs, more systematic studies are required to provide insights into the design of nanocomposite-based electrodes. More applications of CP-based sensors for advanced food and drug analyses are expected.

Chiral Recognition on Bare Gold Surfaces by Quartz Crystal Microbalance

Quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) is one of the powerful tools for the studies of molecular recognition and chiral discrimination. Its efficiency mainly relies on the design of the functional sensitive layer on the electrode surface. However, the organic sensitive layer may easily cause dissipation of oscillation or detachment and weaken the signal transfer during the molecular recognition processes. In this work, we reveal for the first time that the bare metal surface without the organic selector layer has the capability for chiral recognition in the QCM system. During the adsorption of various chiral amino acids, relatively higher selectivity of D-enantiomers on gold (Au) surface was shown by the QCM detection. Based on analyses of the surface crystalline structure and density functional theory calculations, we demonstrate that the chiral nature of Au surface plays an important role in the selective binding of specific D-amino acids. These results may open new insights on chiral detection by QCM system. It will also promote the construction of novel chiral sensing systems with both efficient detection and separation capability.

Protein- and Cell-Resistance of Zwitterionic Peptide-Based Self-Assembled Monolayers: Anti-Biofouling Tests and Surface Force Analysis

Peptide-based self-assembled monolayers (peptide-SAMs) with specific zwitterionic amino acid sequences express an anti-biofouling property. In this work, we performed protein adsorption and cell adhesion tests using peptide-SAMs with repeating units of various zwitterionic pairs of amino acids (EK, DK, ER, and DR). The SAMs with the repeating units of EK and DK (EK and DK SAMs) manifested excellent bioinertness, whereas the SAMs with the repeating units of ER and DR (ER and DR SAMs) adhered proteins and cells. We also performed surface force measurements using atomic force microscopy to elucidate the mechanism underlying the difference in the anti-biofouling property. Our measurements revealed that water-induced repulsion with a range of about 8 nm acts between EK SAMs (immobilized on both probe and substrate) and DK SAMs, whereas such repulsion was not observed for ER and DR SAMs. The strength of the repulsion exhibited a clear correlation with the protein- and cell-resistance of the SAMs, indicating that the interfacial water in the vicinity of EK and DK SAMs is considered as a physical barrier to deter protein and cells from their adsorption or adhesion. The range of the repulsion observed for EK and DK SAMs is longer than 8 nm, indicating that the hydrogen bonding state of the interfacial water with a thickness of 4 nm is modified by EK and DK SAMs, resulting in the expression of the anti-biofouling property.

Phenolic Resin Dual-Use Stamps for Capillary Stamping and Decal Transfer Printing

We report an optimized two-step thermopolymerization process carried out in contact with micropatterned molds that yields porous phenolic resin dual-use stamps with topographically micropatterned contact surfaces. With these stamps, two different parallel additive substrate manufacturing methods can be executed: capillary stamping and decal transfer microlithography. Under moderate contact pressures, the porous phenolic resin stamps are used for nondestructive ink transfer to substrates by capillary stamping. Continuous ink supply through the pore systems to the contact surfaces of the porous phenolic resin stamps enables multiple successive stamp-substrate contacts for lithographic ink deposition under ambient conditions. No deterioration of the quality of the deposited pattern occurs, and no interruptions for ink replenishment are required. Under a high contact pressure, porous phenolic resin stamps are used for decal transfer printing. In this way, the tips of the stamps' contact elements are lithographically transferred to counterpart substrates. The granular nature of the phenolic resin facilitates the rupture of the contact elements upon stamp retraction. The deposited phenolic resin micropatterns characterized by abundance of exposed hydroxyl groups are used as generic anchoring sites for further application-specific functionalizations. As an example, we deposited phenolic resin micropatterns on quartz crystal microbalance resonators and further functionalized them with polyethylenimine for preconcentration sensing of humidity and gaseous formic acid. We envision that also preconcentration coatings for other sensing methods, such as attenuated total reflection infrared spectroscopy and surface plasmon resonance spectroscopy, are accessible by this functionalization algorithm.

Phenyl-Modified Carbon Nitride Quantum Nanoflakes for Ultra-Highly Selective Sensing of Formic Acid: A Combined Experimental by QCM and Density Functional Theory Study

Formic acid (HCOOH) is an important intermediate in chemical synthesis, pharmaceuticals, the food industry, and leather tanning and is considered to be an effective hydrogen storage molecule. Direct contact with its vapor and its inhalation lead to burns, nerve injury, and dermatosis. Thus, it is critical to establish efficient sensing materials and devices for the rapid detection of HCOOH. In the present study, we introduce a chemical sensor based on a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) sensor capable of detecting trace amounts of HCOOH. This sensor is composed of colloidal phenyl-terminated carbon nitride (Ph-g-C₃N₄) quantum nanoflakes prepared using a facile solid-state method involving the supramolecular preorganization technology. In contrast to other synthetic methods of modified carbon nitride materials, this approach requires no hard templates, hazardous chemicals, or hydrothermal treatments. Comprehensive characterization and density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that the QCM sensor designed and prepared here exhibits enhanced detection sensitivity and selectivity for volatile HCOOH, which originates from chemical and hydrogen-bonding interactions between HCOOH and the surface of Ph-g-C₃N₄. According to DFT results, HCOOH is located close to the cavity of the Ph-g-C₃N₄ unit, with bonding to graphitic carbon and pyridinic nitrogen atoms of the nanoflake. The sensitivity of the Ph-g-C₃N₄-nanoflake-based QCM sensor was found to be the highest (128.99 Hz ppm^-1) of the substances studied, with a limit of detection (LOD) of HCOOH down to a sub-ppm level of 80 ppb. This sensing technology based on phenyl-terminated attached-g-C₃N₄ nanoflakes establishes a simple, low-cost solution to improve the performance of QCM sensors for the effective discrimination of HCOOH, HCHO, and CH₃COOH vapors using smart electronic noses.

An electrochemical aptasensor for detection of prostate-specific antigen using reduced graphene gold nanocomposite and Cu/carbon quantum dots

We report a label-free electrochemical aptamer-based biosensor for the detection of human prostate-specific antigen (PSA). The thiolate DNA aptamer against PSA was conjugated to the reduced graphene oxide/Au (RGO-Au) nanocomposite through the self-assembly of Au-S groups. Owing to the large volume to surface ratio, the RGO-Au nanocomposite provides a large surface for aptamer loading. The RGO-Au/aptamer was combined with a Nafion polymer and immobilized on a glassy carbon electrode. The interaction of aptamer with PSA was studied by cyclic voltammetry, square wave voltammetry, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The detection of limit for prepared electrode was obtained about 50 pg/mL at the potential of 0.4 V in potassium hexacyanoferrate [K₄ Fe(CN)₆ ] medium. To decrease the limit of detection (LOD) and applied potential of the prepared nanoprobe Cu/carbon quantum dots (CuCQD) is introduced as a new redox. The results show that this new electrochemical medium provides better conditions for the detection of PSA. LOD of a nanoprobe in CuCQD media was obtained as 40 pg/mL at the potential of -0.2 V. Under optimal conditions, the aptasensor exhibits a linear response to PSA with a LOD as small as 3 pg/mL. The present aptasensor is highly selective and sensitive and shows satisfactory stability and repeatability.

Design and Analytical Performances of a Diclofenac Biosensor for Water Resources Monitoring

Because the broadly consumed pain killer diclofenac (DCF) is a recognized pollutant, monitoring of its concentration is routinely performed in surface waters. As a valuable alternative to chromatographic and immunochemical assays, we developed a piezoelectric immunosensor to quantify DCF, first in buffer (PBS) and then in river water samples. A sensing layer comprising DCF was built up on the surface of silica-coated quartz sensors using a robust coupling chemistry. Binding of a highly affine monoclonal anti-DCF antibody was monitored in real time by quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM-D) measurements from which were determined a dissociation constant K_D of 0.24 nM and an acoustic antibody surface coverage of 1120 ng/cm² at saturation. On the other hand, an optical antibody surface coverage of 260 ng/cm² was determined by combined nanoplasmonic sensing measurement, giving a hydration percentage of 75% for the antibody monolayer. DCF assay was further set up following a competitive format for which binding of antibody to the sensing layer is inhibited by DCF in solution. The piezoelectric sensor response expressed as frequency shift ΔF was inversely related to the concentration of DCF with a dynamic range of 15-46 nM and a limit of detection (LoD) of 9.5 nM (2.8 μg/L) in PBS. This piezoelectric immunosensor was eventually applied to the assay of DCF in surface water samples taken at three different locations in the Seine and Marne rivers. The calculated concentration of DCF in these samples was in good agreement with official data published by the French center of water analysis eaufrance.

Method for QCM Resonator Device Equivalent Circuit Parameter Extraction and Electrode Quality Assessment

Quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) resonators are used in a wide range of sensors. Current QCM resonators achieve a simultaneous measurement of multiple physical quantities by analyzing lumped-element equivalent parameters, which are obtained via the introduction of external devices. This introduction of external devices will probably increase measurement error. To realize the measurement of multiple physical quantities while eliminating the measurement error caused by external devices, this paper proposes a measurement method for the lumped-element equivalent parameters of QCM resonators without the need for extra external devices. Accordingly, a numerical method for solving nonlinear equations with fewer data points required and a higher accuracy was adopted. A standard crystal resonator parameter extraction experiment is described. The extracted parameters were consistent with the nominal parameters, which confirms the accuracy of this method. Furthermore, six QCM resonator device samples with different electrode diameters and materials were produced and used in the parameter measurement experiment. The linear relationship between the electrode material conductivity and motional resistance R₁ is discussed. The ability of this method to characterize the electrode material and to detect the rust status of the electrode is also demonstrated. These abilities support the potential utility of the proposed method for an electrode quality assessment of piezoelectric devices.

Engineering Tropism of Pseudomonas putida toward Target Surfaces through Ectopic Display of Recombinant Nanobodies

Gram-negative bacteria are endowed with complex outer membrane (OM) structures that allow them to both interact with other organisms and attach to different physical structures. However, the design of reliable bacterial coatings of solid surfaces is still a considerable challenge. In this work, we report that ectopic expression of a fibrinogen-specific nanobody on the envelope of Pseudomonas putida cells enables controllable formation of a bacterial monolayer strongly bound to an antigen-coated support. To this end, either the wild type or a surface-naked derivative of P. putida was engineered to express a hybrid between the β-barrel of an intimin-type autotransporter inserted in the outer membrane and a nanobody (VHH) moiety that targets fibrinogen as its cognate interaction partner. The functionality of the thereby presented VHH and the strength of the resulting cell attachment to a solid surface covered with the cognate antigen were tested and parametrized with Quartz Crystal Microbalance technology. The results not only demonstrated the value of using bacteria with reduced OM complexity for efficient display of artificial adhesins, but also the potential of this approach to engineer specific bacterial coverings of predetermined target surfaces.

Changes of Viscoelastic Properties of Aptamer-Based Sensing Layers Following Interaction with Listeria innocua

A multiharmonic quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) has been applied to study the viscoelastic properties of the aptamer-based sensing layers at the surface of a QCM transducer covered by neutravidin following interaction with bacteria Listeria innocua. Addition of bacteria in the concentration range 5 × 103-106 CFU/mL resulted in a decrease of resonant frequency and in an increase of dissipation. The frequency decrease has been lower than one would expect considering the dimension of the bacteria. This can be caused by lower penetration depth of the acoustics wave (approximately 120 nm) in comparison with the thickness of the bacterial layer (approximately 500 nm). Addition of E. coli at the surface of neutravidin as well as aptamer layers did not result in significant changes in frequency and dissipation. Using the Kelvin-Voight model the analysis of the viscoelastic properties of the sensing layers was performed and several parameters such as penetration depth, Γ, viscosity coefficient, η, and shear modulus, μ, were determined following various modifications of QCM transducer. The penetration depth decreased following adsorption of the neutravidin layer, which is evidence of the formation of a rigid protein structure. This value did not change significantly following adsorption of aptamers and Listeria innocua. Viscosity coefficient was higher for the neutravidin layer in comparison with the naked QCM transducer in a buffer. However, a further increase of viscosity coefficient took place following attachment of aptamers suggesting their softer structure. The interaction of Listeria innocua with the aptamer layer resulted in slight decrease of viscosity coefficient. The shearing modulus increased for the neutravidin layer and decreased following aptamer adsorption, while a slight increase of µ was observed after the addition of Listeria innocua.

Swelling-Assisted Sequential Infiltration Synthesis of Nanoporous ZnO Films with Highly Accessible Pores and Their Sensing Potential for Ethanol

Here, we report a swelling-assisted sequential infiltration synthesis (SIS) approach for the design of highly porous zinc oxide (ZnO) films by infiltration of block copolymer templates such as polystyrene-block-polyvinyl pyridine with inorganic precursors followed by UV ozone-assisted removal of the polymer template. We show that porous ZnO coatings with the thickness in the range between 140 and 420 nm can be obtained using only five cycles of SIS. The pores in ZnO fabricated via swelling-assisted SIS are highly accessible, and up to 98% of pores are available for solvent penetration. The XPS data indicate that the surface of nanoporous ZnO films is terminated with -OH groups. Density functional theory calculations show a lower energy barrier for ethanol-induced release of the oxygen restricted depletion layer in the case of the presence of -OH groups at the ZnO surface, and hence, it can lead to higher sensitivity in sensing of ethanol. We monitored the response of ZnO porous coatings with different thicknesses and porosities to ethanol vapors using combined mass-based and chemiresistive approaches at room temperature and 90 °C. The porous ZnO conformal coatings reveal a promising sensitivity toward detection of ethanol at low temperatures. Our results suggest the excellent potential of the SIS approach for the design of conformal ZnO coatings with controlled porosity, thickness, and composition that can be adapted for sensing applications.

Synthesis of High-Quality Mg-MOF-74 Thin Films via Vapor-Assisted Crystallization

The unique features of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), such as their large surface areas and diversity of structures, make them suitable for a broad range of applications including storage, separation, and sensing of gases. Among all the MOFs, Mg-MOF-74 with the highest CO₂ uptake at 1 bar and 25 °C would be particularly beneficial for CO₂-related applications. One of the most critical enabling technologies for implementing Mg-MOF-74 is the preparation of dense and continuous films that would maximize the sorption behaviors. However, Mg-MOF-74 thin films present significant challenges in demonstrating large-scale coatings. Herein, we demonstrate for the first time high-quality Mg-MOF-74 films synthesized via a vapor-assisted crystallization (VAC) process. The VAC process described herein provides dense and highly crystalline layers of the Mg-MOF-74 thin film with a low coefficient of variation of film thickness below 7%. By minimizing the solvent use, the VAC process is also more environmentally friendly than conventional techniques. In this work, we first optimized a precursor solution for the VAC process and then investigated the effects of synthesis temperature, time, and droplet volume on the growth, crystallinity, and thickness of VAC Mg-MOF-74 films. The porosity of the MOF film was assessed by measuring the CO₂ uptake at room temperature and 1 bar. The obtained VAC Mg-MOF-74 films possess a well-defined microporosity, as deduced from CO₂ adsorption studies via quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) and comparison with bulk Mg-MOF-74 reference data. Furthermore, CO₂ cyclic adsorption-desorption experiments on the VAC Mg-MOF-74 films showed scaled uptakes to a wide range of CO₂ concentration without showing significant variations in the baseline. We specifically demonstrate how the film's quality of the MOF affects adsorption behavior of CO₂ on VAC Mg-MOF-74 and drop-cast Mg-MOF-74 films.

Metal-Free Antibacterial Additives Based on Graphene Materials and Salicylic Acid: From the Bench to Fabric Applications

The custom functionalization of a graphene surface allows access to engineered nanomaterials with improved colloidal stability and tailored specific properties, which are available to be employed in a wide range of applications ranging from materials to life science. The high surface area and their intrinsic physical and biological properties make reduced graphene oxide and graphene oxide unique materials for the custom functionalization with bioactive molecules by exploiting different surface chemistries. In this work, preparation (on the gram scale) of reduced graphene oxide and graphene oxide derivatives functionalized with the well-known antibacterial agent salicylic acid is reported. The salicylic acid functionalities offered a stable colloidal dispersion and, in addition, homogeneous absorption on a sample of textile manufacture (i.e., cotton fabrics), as shown by a Raman spectroscopy study, thus providing nanoengineered materials with significant antibacterial activity toward different strains of microorganisms. Surprisingly, graphene surface functionalization also ensured resistance to detergent washing treatments as verified on a model system using the quartz crystal microbalance technique. Therefore, our findings paved the way for the development of antibacterial additives for cotton fabrics in the absence of metal components, thus limiting undesirable side effects.

Studying Soft Interfaces with Shear Waves: Principles and Applications of the Quartz Crystal Microbalance (QCM)

The response of the quartz crystal microbalance (QCM, also: QCM-D for "QCM with Dissipation monitoring") to loading with a diverse set of samples is reviewed in a consistent frame. After a brief introduction to the advanced QCMs, the governing equation (the small-load approximation) is derived. Planar films and adsorbates are modeled based on the acoustic multilayer formalism. In liquid environments, viscoelastic spectroscopy and high-frequency rheology are possible, even on layers with a thickness in the monolayer range. For particulate samples, the contact stiffness can be derived. Because the stress at the contact is large, the force is not always proportional to the displacement. Nonlinear effects are observed, leading to a dependence of the resonance frequency and the resonance bandwidth on the amplitude of oscillation. Partial slip, in particular, can be studied in detail. Advanced topics include structured samples and the extension of the small-load approximation to its tensorial version.

Studying the Bulk and Contour Ice Nucleation of Water Droplets via Quartz Crystal Microbalances

Due to the stochastic and time-dependent character of the ice embryo formation and growth (i.e., a process that can be analyzed statistically, but cannot be predicted precisely), the heterogeneous ice nucleation on atmospheric aerosols or macroscopic solid surfaces is still shrouded in mystery, regardless of the extremely active research and exponential progress within this scientific field. For instance, whether the icing appears from outside-in or inside-out is a subject of intense controversy, with practicability in designing passive icephobic coatings or improving the effectiveness of the cryopreservation technologies. Here, we propose an artful technique for quantitative analysis of the different modes of water freezing using super-nonwettable soot-coated quartz crystal microbalances (QCMs). To achieve this goal, a set of 5 MHz QCMs are loaded one at a time with a 50 μL droplet, whose bulk or contour solidification is detected in real-time. The obtained experimental results show that our sensor devices recognize explicitly if the ice nuclei form predominantly at the liquid-solid interface or spread along the droplet's entire outer shell by triggering individual reproducible responses in terms of the direction of signal evolution in time. Our results may serve as a foundation for the future incorporation of QCM devices in different freezing assays, where gaining information about the ice adhesion forces and ice layer's thickness is mandatory.

Electrochemical Formation Mechanism of Microdroplets on Pure Iron

The electrochemical formation mechanism of microdroplets formed around a primary droplet of 3.5% NaCl solution on an iron-plated film was investigated by quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) and concentric three-electrode array (CTEA) measurements. During the initial stage, the microdroplets mainly originate from evaporation owing to cathodic polarization and electric current of the localized corrosion cell under the primary droplet. The maximal electrochemical potential difference between the anode and cathode was measured to be 0.36 V and acted as the driving force for the formation of microdroplets. The maximums of anodic and cathodic electric current density of pure iron under the NaCl droplet are 764 and -152 μA/cm², respectively. Propagation of microdroplets in the developing stage attributes to horizontal movement of the electrolyte, water evaporation, and recondensation from primary and capillary condensation from moist air. The results of the study suggest that the initiation and propagation of microdroplets could promote and accelerate marine atmospheric corrosion.

High-Sensitivity Dual Electrochemical QCM for Reliable Three-Electrode Measurements

An electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EC-QCM) is a versatile gravimetric technique that allows for parallel characterization of mass deposition and electrochemical properties. Despite its broad applicability, simultaneous characterization of two electrodes remains challenging due to practical difficulties posed by the dampening from fixture parasitics and the dissipative medium. In this study, we present a dual electrochemical QCM (dual EC-QCM) that is employed in a three-electrode configuration to enable consequent monitoring of mass deposition and viscous loading on two crystals, the working electrode (WE) and the counter electrode (CE). A novel correction approach, along with a three standard complex impedance calibration, is employed to overcome the effect of dampening while keeping high spectral sensitivity. Separation of viscous loading and rigid mass deposition is achieved by robust characterization of the complex impedance at the resonance frequency. Validation of the presented system is done by cyclic voltammetry characterization of Ag underpotential deposition on gold. The results indicate mass deposition of 412.2 ng for the WE and 345.6 ng for the CE, reflecting a difference of the initially-present Ag adhered to the surface. We also performed higher harmonic measurements that further corroborate the sensitivity and reproducibility of the dual EC-QCM. The demonstrated approach is especially intriguing for electrochemical energy storage applications where mass detection with multiple electrodes is desired.

Molecularly Imprinted Polymer-Based Sensors for Priority Pollutants

Globally, there is growing concern about the health risks of water and air pollution. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has developed a list of priority pollutants containing 129 different chemical compounds. All of these chemicals are of significant interest due to their serious health and safety issues. Permanent exposure to some concentrations of these chemicals can cause severe and irrecoverable health effects, which can be easily prevented by their early identification. Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) offer great potential for selective adsorption of chemicals from water and air samples. These selective artificial bio(mimetic) receptors are promising candidates for modification of sensors, especially disposable sensors, due to their low-cost, long-term stability, ease of engineering, simplicity of production and their applicability for a wide range of targets. Herein, innovative strategies used to develop MIP-based sensors for EPA priority pollutants will be reviewed.

Macrophages bind LDL using heparan sulfate and the perlecan protein core

The retention of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) is a key process in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis and largely mediated via smooth-muscle cell-derived extracellular proteoglycans including the glycosaminoglycan chains. Macrophages can also internalize lipids via complexes with proteoglycans. However, the role of polarized macrophage-derived proteoglycans in binding LDL is unknown and important to advance our understanding of the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. We therefore examined the identity of proteoglycans, including the pendent glycosaminoglycans, produced by polarized macrophages to gain insight into the molecular basis for LDL binding. Using the quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring technique, we established that classically activated macrophage (M1)- and alternatively activated macrophage (M2)-derived proteoglycans bind LDL via both the protein core and heparan sulfate (HS) in vitro. Among the proteoglycans secreted by macrophages, we found perlecan was the major protein core that bound LDL. In addition, we identified perlecan in the necrotic core as well as the fibrous cap of advanced human atherosclerotic lesions in the same regions as HS and colocalized with M2 macrophages, suggesting a functional role in lipid retention in vivo. These findings suggest that macrophages may contribute to LDL retention in the plaque by the production of proteoglycans; however, their contribution likely depends on both their phenotype within the plaque and the presence of enzymes, such as heparanase, that alter the secreted protein structure.
