Abstract
In a recent study (Comp. Biochem. Physiol. B. (2010)155: 301-308) we reported that the fatty acids (FA) of the avian (7 species) total lung phospholipids (PL) (i.e. lung parenchyma and surfactant together) provide allometric properties. To test whether this allometric scaling also occurs in either of the above components, in six gallinaceous species, in a body weight range from 150 g (Japanese quail, Coturnix coturnix japonica) to 19 kg (turkey, Meleagris gallopavo) the PL FA composition (mol%) was determined in the pulmonary surfactant, in native and in thoroughly lavaged lungs (referred to as lung parenchyma). In all three components docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) showed significant and negative allometric scaling (B = -0.056, -0.17 and -0.1, respectively). Surfactant PLs provided further negative allometry for palmitic acid and the opposite was found for palmitoleate and arachidonate. In the lung parenchymal PLs increasing body weight was matched with shorter chain FAs (average FA chain length) and competing n6 and n3 end-product fatty acids (positive allometry for arachidonic acid and negative for DHA). Negative allometric scaling was found for the tissue malondialdehyde concentration in the native and lavaged lungs (B = -0.1582 and -0.1594, respectively). In these tissues strong correlation was found between the MDA concentration and DHA proportion (r = 0.439 and 0.679, respectively), denoting the role of DHA in shaping the allometric properties and influencing the extent of in vivo lipid peroxidation of membrane lipids in fowl lungs.

Abstract
The present study aimed in vivo tracking of maturation of male eel by computed tomography (CT). Additionally, individually monitored testes sizes were correlated with the conventionally used external maturity indicators (i.e. eye and nose indexes) in order to test and improve their usefulness at individual level. Testes could be clearly identified with the CT from the end of the third week of hCG administration routinely used to induce maturation in fish. The volume of testes increased exponentially during hormone treatment, and by the end of the sixth week of maturation procedure all males produced motilable spermatozoa. Present results prove that testes size can noninvasively be monitored with CT from maturity level where testes size rich 3000 mm3 volume. Eye and nose indexes are in close correlation with testes volume and thus can also be effectively used to monitor maturity level of male eel, but preferably only at stock level. However, due to their high individual variability, these indexes can be applied only with caution at individual level and should be supplemented with other noninvasive techniques such as CT.

Abstract
Mutations in human cationic trypsinogen (PRSS1) cause autosomal dominant hereditary pancreatitis. Increased intrapancreatic autoactivation of trypsinogen mutants has been hypothesized to initiate the disease. Autoactivation of cationic trypsinogen is proteolytically regulated by chymotrypsin C (CTRC), which mitigates the development of trypsin activity by promoting degradation of both trypsinogen and trypsin. Paradoxically, CTRC also increases the rate of autoactivation by processing the trypsinogen activation peptide to a shorter form. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of CTRC on the autoactivation of clinically relevant trypsinogen mutants. We found that in the presence of CTRC, trypsinogen mutants associated with classic hereditary pancreatitis (N29I, N29T, V39A, R122C, and R122H) autoactivated at increased rates and reached markedly higher active trypsin levels compared with wild-type cationic trypsinogen. The A16V mutant, known for its variable disease penetrance, exhibited a smaller increase in autoactivation. The mechanistic basis of increased activation was mutation-specific and involved resistance to degradation (N29I, N29T, V39A, R122C, and R122H) and/or increased N-terminal processing by CTRC (A16V and N29I). These observations indicate that hereditary pancreatitis is caused by CTRC-dependent dysregulation of cationic trypsinogen autoactivation, which results in elevated trypsin levels in the pancreas.

Abstract
Cell invasion from an aggregate into a surrounding extracellular matrix (ECM) is an important process during development disease, e.g., vascular network assembly or tumor progression. To describe the behavior emerging from autonomous cell motility, cell-cell adhesion and contact guidance by ECM filaments, we propose a suitably modified cellular Potts model. We consider an active cell motility process in which internal polarity is governed by a positive feedback from cell displacements, a mechanism that can result in highly persistent motion when constrained by an oriented ECM structure. The model allows us to explore the interplay between haptotaxis, matrix degradation and active cell movement. We show that for certain conditions the cells are able to both invade the ECM and follow the ECM tracks. Furthermore, we argue that enforcing mechanical equilibrium within a bulk cell mass is of key importance in multicellular simulations.

Abstract
Abstract. A total of 238 Pannon White growing rabbits were slaughtered at 74, 84 and 94 days of age, at an average body weight of 2.53, 2.84 and 3.15 kg, respectively. Within each age group five body weight categories were formed in such a way that the weight difference between two neighbouring groups was equally 0.3 kg. The design of the experiment permitted the separate examination of the effects exerted by age and body weight on carcass traits and on meat chemical composition of the left hind leg (HL) and that of m. Longissimus dorsi (MLD). Dressing out percentage significantly increased with the increase of age in all body weight categories, as well as with the increase of body weight. The effect of age on the ratio of the fore part of the carcass depended on the body weight: significant difference was found in lower body weight categories. The ratio of the intermediate part of the carcass was not affected by age but it increased in rabbits of higher body weight. The ratio of the hind part of the carcass increased in older animals, while it decreased in rabbits of higher body weight, and this decrease was higher in older rabbits. The ratio of the perirenal fat to reference carcass significantly decreased with age in all body weight categories, but it significantly increased in rabbits of higher body weight. With the advancement of age the moisture content of the HL increased, while that of the MLD did not change. With the increase of body weight, moisture content decreased in both the HL and in the MLD. The fat content of both HL and MLD decreased in older animals, while it increased in rabbits of higher body weight.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Even in developed countries the prevalence of subjects with suboptimal vitamin D levels is high. The aim of this retrospective data analysis was to evaluate the prevalence of severe and moderate vitamin D deficiencies (defined as vitamin D levels<15 ng/ml and 15-30 ng/ml, respectively) among patients evaluated at Semmelweis University during a period between April, 2009 and March, 2010. METHODS AND RESULTS The average vitamin D level of 5808 subjects (3936 women and 1872 men) was 25.5 ± 10.9 ng/ml. The prevalence of moderate and severe vitamin D deficiency in whole population was 72% and 12%, respectively. Higher than normal vitamin D levels were measured in 0.8% of subjects. Female gender, older age and winter season were independent risk factors for vitamin D deficiency. Vitamin D levels were measured repeatedly in 1307 subjects. Interestingly, vitamin D levels measured later were lower compared to those measured at the first time (27.07±13.2 vs. 25.9±9.11 ng/ml, p<0.001). The prevalence of severe and moderate vitamin D deficiency was 8.1 and 71.5 per cent when vitamin D levels were measured at the second time. Of the 110 patients with severe vitamin D deficiency measured repeatedly only 11 patients (10%) presented with normal vitamin D levels at the second time. CONCLUSIONS These data indicate that severe and moderate vitamin D deficiencies are common in patients evaluated at Semmelweis University. Repeated measurements of vitamin D levels raise the notion that the efficacy of supplementation used for correction of vitamin D levels is not optimal.

Abstract
Vitamin D is obtained from cutaneous production when 7-dehydrocholesterol is converted to vitamin D(3) (cholecalciferol) by ultraviolet B radiation or by oral intake of vitamin D. Rickets appeared to have been conquered with vitamin D intake, and many health care professionals thought the major health problems resulting from vitamin D deficiency had been resolved. However, rickets can be considered the tip of the vitamin D deficiency iceberg. In fact, vitamin D deficiency remains common in children and adults. An individual's vitamin D status is best evaluated by measuring the circulating 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D3) concentration. There is increasing agreement that the optimal circulating 25(OH)D3 level should be approximately 30 ng/mL or above. Using this definition, it has been estimated that approximately three-quarters of all adults have low levels. In utero and during childhood, vitamin D deficiency can cause growth retardation and skeletal deformities and may increase the risk of hip fracture later in life. Vitamin D deficiency in adults can exacerbate osteopenia and osteoporosis, cause osteomalacia and muscle weakness, and increase the risk of fracture. More recently, associations between low vitamin D status and increased risk for various non-skeletal morbidities have been recognized; whether all of these associations are causally related to low vitamin D status remains to be determined. The discovery that most tissues and cells in the body have vitamin D receptors and that several possess the enzymatic machinery to convert the 25-hydroxyvitamin D3, to the active form, 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3, has provided new insights into the function of this vitamin. Of great interest is its role in decreasing the risk of many chronic illnesses, including common cancers, autoimmune diseases, infectious diseases, and cardiovascular disease. In this review I consider the nature of vitamin D deficiency, discuss its role in skeletal and non-skeletal health, and suggest strategies for prevention and treatment.

Abstract
Extracellular matrix (ECM) movements and rearrangements were studied in avian embryos during early stages of development. We show that the ECM moves as a composite material, whereby distinct molecular components as well as spatially separated layers exhibit similar displacements. Using scanning wide field and confocal microscopy we show that the velocity field of ECM displacement is smooth in space and that ECM movements are correlated even at locations separated by several hundred micrometers. Velocity vectors, however, strongly fluctuate in time. The autocorrelation time of the velocity fluctuations is less than a minute. Suppression of the fluctuations yields a persistent movement pattern that is shared among embryos at equivalent stages of development. The high resolution of the velocity fields allows a detailed spatio-temporal characterization of important morphogenetic processes, especially tissue dynamics surrounding the embryonic organizer (Hensen's node).

OBJECTIVE To assess the characteristics and course of childhood-onset Crohn's disease among Hungarian patients. METHODS Records of 81 patients admitted between 1984 and 2006 and treated at least for one year until the 18th year of age were reviewed. RESULTS There was a 62% male dominance and a rate of 12.5% of familial cases. The diagnostic lag was 11.36 (1-96) months. The mean age was 13.6 years (4-17), the activity index was 37.88 (5-80) at diagnosis and the initial frequencies were as follows: ileal affection 87%, stricturing and penetrating forms 27%, perianal manifestation 26%, giant cells or granuloma formation 47%, malnutrition 23,5%, growth failure 11%. Steroid therapy and azathioprin treatment were given in 84% and 62% of the patients, respectively. Biologic treatment was not possible during the study period. 31% of the patients underwent surgery (abdominal surgery 20%, perianal surgery 11%). When patients reached the 18th year of age the mean activity index decreased to 6.63 (0-35), the rate of malnutrition to 9.9% and that of growth failure to 2.5%. All these changes were statistically significant. CONCLUSIONS Characteristics of childhood-onset Crohn's disease in Hungary are similar to those obtained in other European countries. The prolonged diagnostic lag, the high initial activity index, the granuloma formation and the stricturing/penetrating behavior may predict subsequent complications and need for surgery, and, therefore, justify intense initial therapy. The early introduction of immunomodulatory therapy affects favorably the course of illness.

Abstract
Human chymotrypsin C (CTRC) is a pancreatic protease that participates in the regulation of intestinal digestive enzyme activity. Other chymotrypsins and elastases are inactive on the regulatory sites cleaved by CTRC, suggesting that CTRC recognizes unique sequence patterns. To characterize the molecular determinants underlying CTRC specificity, we selected high affinity substrate-like small protein inhibitors against CTRC from a phage library displaying variants of SGPI-2, a natural chymotrypsin inhibitor from Schistocerca gregaria. On the basis of the sequence pattern selected, we designed eight inhibitor variants in which amino acid residues in the reactive loop at P1 (Met or Leu), P2' (Leu or Asp), and P4' (Glu, Asp, or Ala) were varied. Binding experiments with CTRC revealed that (i) inhibitors with Leu at P1 bind 10-fold stronger than those with P1 Met; (ii) Asp at P2' (versus Leu) decreases affinity but increases selectivity, and (iii) Glu or Asp at P4' (versus Ala) increase affinity 10-fold. The highest affinity SGPI-2 variant (K(D) 20 pm) bound to CTRC 575-fold tighter than the parent molecule. The most selective inhibitor variant exhibited a K(D) of 110 pm and a selectivity ranging from 225- to 112,664-fold against other human chymotrypsins and elastases. Homology modeling and mutagenesis identified a cluster of basic amino acid residues (Lys(51), Arg(56), and Arg(80)) on the surface of human CTRC that interact with the P4' acidic residue of the inhibitor. The acidic preference of CTRC at P4' is unique among pancreatic proteases and might contribute to the high specificity of CTRC-mediated digestive enzyme regulation.

Abstract
Although adult motoneurons do not die if their axons are injured at some distance from the cell body, they are unable to survive injury caused by ventral root avulsion. Some of the injured motoneurons can be rescued if the ventral root is re-inserted into the spinal cord. Brachial plexus injuries that involve the complete or partial avulsion of one or more cervical ventral roots can be treated successfully only if satisfactory numbers of motoneurons remain alive following such an injury at the time of reconstructive surgery. Here we investigated the various strategies that could be used to rescue injured rat cervical motoneurons. The seventh cervical ventral root (C7) was avulsed and various therapeutic approaches were applied to induce motoneuronal survival and regeneration. Avulsion of the root without reimplantation resulted in very low numbers of surviving motoneurons (65 ± 8 SEM), while treatment of the injured motoneurons with riluzole resulted in high numbers of surviving motoneurons (637 ± 26 SEM). When the C7 ventral root was reimplanted or a peripheral nerve implant was used to guide the regenerating axons to a muscle, considerable numbers of motoneurons regenerated their axons (211 ± 15 SEM and 274 ± 28 SEM, respectively). Much greater numbers of axons regenerated when reimplantation was followed by riluzole treatment (573 ± 9 SEM). These results show that injured adult motoneurons can be rescued by riluzole treatment, even if they cannot regenerate their axons. Reinnervation of the peripheral targets can also be further improved with riluzole treatment.

Abstract
A new styryl dye were prepared, 2-[2-(4-dipropylamino-phenyl)-vinyl]-1,3,3-trimethyl-3H-indolium chloride (DPPTVI) chloride. Its infrared and Raman were measured. Quantum chemical calculations were computed for both the isolated and the solute cation. Optimized geometry, atomic net charges were calculated. The calculated vibrational frequencies were scaled to the experimental ones. Only 12 scale factors were used for the scaling of 174 vibrational modes. Based on these results, normal coordinate analysis were carried out for both the isolated and the solute cations. Infrared and Raman spectra were simulated. The results for the isolated and the solute cations were compared.

Abstract
Histamine and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) have been implicated in the pathogenesis of allergic asthma; they enhance inflammation, vascular permeability, and mucus secretion. Histamine was suggested to alter the level of VEGF via the H2 receptors. Here the authors have applied histidine decarboxylase gene-targeted (HDC(-/-)) mice, lacking histamine, to investigate the effect of histamine deficiency on VEGF expression in an animal model of asthma. HDC(-/-) and wild-type (WT) mice were sensitized and challenged with ovalbumin (OVA). VEGF mRNA expression and protein level were determined in the lung. Number of VEGF-positive immune cells of bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) and their intracellular VEGF content were measured by flow cytometry. VEGF protein level in the lung and in the BAL cells was increased in OVA treated (HDC(-/-)(ova) as well as in WT(ova)) animals compared to their controls. However, there was no difference in the VEGF levels between HDC(-/-) or WT animals, either in the lung or in the BAL cells. In conclusion, increased VEGF production of the lung or BAL immune cells can be induced by allergen provocation independently from the genetic background of the animals. These data suggest that VEGF-mediated allergic processes can persist in the absence of histamine.

Abstract
Human digestive carboxypeptidases CPA1, CPA2, and CPB1 are secreted by the pancreas as inactive proenzymes containing a 94-96-amino acid-long propeptide. Activation of procarboxypeptidases is initiated by proteolytic cleavage at the C-terminal end of the propeptide by trypsin. Here, we demonstrate that subsequent cleavage of the propeptide by chymotrypsin C (CTRC) induces a nearly 10-fold increase in the activity of trypsin-activated CPA1 and CPA2, whereas CPB1 activity is unaffected. Other human pancreatic proteases such as chymotrypsin B1, chymotrypsin B2, chymotrypsin-like enzyme-1, elastase 2A, elastase 3A, or elastase 3B are inactive or markedly less effective at promoting procarboxypeptidase activation. On the basis of these observations, we propose that CTRC is a physiological co-activator of proCPA1 and proCPA2. Furthermore, the results confirm and extend the notion that CTRC is a key regulator of digestive zymogen activation.

Abstract
Collective cell motility is an important aspect of several developmental and pathophysiological processes. Despite its importance, the mechanisms that allow cells to be both motile and adhere to one another are poorly understood. In this study we establish statistical properties of the random streaming behavior of endothelial monolayer cultures. To understand the reported empirical findings, we expand the widely used cellular Potts model to include active cell motility. For spontaneous directed motility we assume a positive feedback between cell displacements and cell polarity. The resulting model is studied with computer simulations and is shown to exhibit behavior compatible with experimental findings. In particular, in monolayer cultures both the speed and persistence of cell motion decreases, transient cell chains move together as groups and velocity correlations extend over several cell diameters. As active cell motility is ubiquitous both in vitro and in vivo, our model is expected to be a generally applicable representation of cellular behavior.

Abstract. At identical bodyweight values (130 kg) Mangalica and Hungarian Large White tissue (liver, kidney, heart and skeletal muscle, adipose tissue, spleen and lung) triacylglycerol (TAG) fatty acid distribution analysis was performed, to describe tissue types and possible genotype-associated differences. Tissue TAG was partially hydrolyzed with hog pancreatic lipase, and the fatty acid profile of 2-monoacylglycerols (2MAG) and TAGs was analyzed by gas-chromatography. All extrahepatic tissues provided marked central (sn-2) saturated fatty acid (SFA) (mostly palmitate) recruitment, while liver 2MAGs were mainly aclylated by unsaturated fatty acids (UFA). Inter-genotype differences were minor: in adipose tissue in Mangalica the total palmitate moiety was found in the 2MAGs, while in the liver docosapentaenoic and docosahexaenoic acids were only found in the Mangalica 2MAGs. In conclusion, the direct analysis results of the 2MAGs in six extrahepatic organs and in the liver provided evidence that the building-up of the characteristic porcine TAG structure is located at a post-hepatic site, being true for most of the organs in the pig body.

Adipose cell diameter (117.2 ± 24.1 vs. 55.3 ± 17 μm, Mangalica vs. Hungarian Large White), size (118.9 ± 44.3 vs. 31.9 ± 0.63 μm2∙100) and volume (8.01 ± 0.67 vs. 2.18 ± 0.18 μm3 ∙1 000) was significantly higher in Mangalica, while the hydroxyproline content (0.04 ± 0.005 vs. 0.23 ± 0.014 weight% of wet tissue) and the connective tissue area in the microscopic images (%) were ca. 5-fold higher in Hungarian Large White. The present quantitative results underscore the experience that at identical bodyweight the fat (89.9 ± 1.19 vs. 78.9 ± 0.39 %) and dry matter content (97.8 ± 1.72 vs. 87.7 ± 0.38 %, Mangalica vs. Hungarian Large White), as well as the cellularity of Mangalica largely differs from that of Hungarian Large White.

Abstract
Previously, it has been suggested that hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF) 1 signaling may play determinative role in the maintenance of the barrier function of the intestinal epithelium in inflammatory bowel disease. Our aim was to depict the alteration of HIF-1alpha and related genes in celiac disease (CD) where the importance of the barrier function is well known. Duodenal biopsy specimens were collected from 16 children with untreated CD, 9 children with treated CD and 10 controls. HIF-1alpha, trefoil factor 1 (TFF1), ecto-5-prime nucleotidase (CD73), and multi drug resistance gene 1 (MDR1) mRNA and HIF-1alpha protein expression were determined by real-time PCR and Western blot, respectively. Localization of HIF-1alpha was determined by immunofluorescent staining. We found increased HIF-1alpha and TFF1 mRNA and HIF-1alpha protein expression in the duodenal mucosa of children with untreated CD compared with controls or children with treated CD (p < 0.05). In untreated CD children, HIF-1alpha staining was present in cytoplasmic and nuclear region of the villous enterocytes. In treated CD mRNA expression of CD73 and MDR1 were increased compared with controls (p < 0.01 and 0.05, respectively). Our results of increased mucosal HIF-1alpha expression in CD children suggest the contribution of this signaling pathway in the pathomechanism of CD.

Abstract
Background Genetically modified pseudorabies virus (Prv) proved suitable for the delivery of foreign genes to rodent embryonic neurons ex vivo and maintaining foreign gene expression after transplantation into spinal cord in our earlier study. The question arose of whether human embryonic neurons, which are known to be more resistant to Prv, could also be infected with a mutant Prv. Specifically, we investigated whether a mutant Prv with deleted ribonucleotide reductase and early protein 0 genes has the potential to deliver marker genes (gfp and β-gal) into human embryonic spinal cord neurons and whether the infected neurons maintain expression after transplantation into adult mouse cord. Results The results revealed that the mutant Prv effectively infected human embryonic spinal cord neurons ex vivo and the grafted cells exhibited reporter gene expression for several weeks. Grafting of infected human embryonic cells into the spinal cord of immunodeficient (rnu-/rnu-) mice resulted in the infection of some of the host neurons. Discussion These results suggest that Prv is suitable for the delivery of foreign genes into transplantable human cells. This delivery method may offer a new approach to use genetically modified cells for grafting in animal models where spinal cord neuronal loss or axon degeneration occurs.

Abstract
Doxazosin, an alpha(1)-adrenergic receptor inhibitor, is commonly administered to patients with type 2 diabetes, hypertension and nephropathy. The impact of 3 months' doxazosin therapy on the prevalence of activated and regulatory T lymphocytes was analysed in this pilot study of men with type 2 diabetes (n = 10) who received doxazosin 4 mg/day in addition to their ongoing therapy. The prevalence of CD4(+), CD8(+), CD25(+) and CD69(+) cells at baseline and after 3 months of add-on therapy was determined. The prevalence of regulatory T-cells was detected by two different approaches: forkhead box P3 (FoxP3) positivity; and the number of CD4(+)CD25(+high) cells. During 3 months of doxazosin therapy, patients' blood pressure, blood glucose control and lipid profiles all significantly improved. Simultaneously, the prevalence of activated T-cells (CD4(+)CD69(+) and CD8(+)CD69(+) cells) decreased, whereas that of regulatory T-cells increased. These results indicate an immunomodulatory action of doxazosin in type 2 diabetic patients.

Abstract
Collective cell motility and its guidance via cell-cell contacts is instrumental in several morphogenetic and pathological processes such as vasculogenesis or tumor growth. Multicellular sprout elongation, one of the simplest cases of collective motility, depends on a continuous supply of cells streaming along the sprout towards its tip. The phenomenon is often explained as leader cells pulling the rest of the sprout forward via cell-cell adhesion. Building on an empirically demonstrated analogy between surface tension and cell-cell adhesion, we demonstrate that such a mechanism is unable to recruit cells to the sprout. Moreover, the expansion of such hypothetical sprouts is limited by a form of the Plateau-Taylor instability. In contrast, actively moving cells - guided by cell-cell contacts - can readily populate and expand linear sprouts. We argue that preferential attraction to the surfaces of elongated cells can provide a generic mechanism, shared by several cell types, for multicellular sprout formation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Galectin-9 (Gal-9) is a member of the growing family of beta-galactoside-binding lectins. Gal-9 is an eosinophil chemoattractant and inducer of Th1 cell apoptosis. These effects suggest its potential role in the pathogenesis of asthma. Our aim was to study the expression of Gal-9 in an ovalbumin (OVA)-induced mouse model of allergic asthma. METHODS To investigate the significance of Gal-9 in allergic inflammation and airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR), a group of BALB/c mice was sensitized and challenged with OVA (G(OVA)). Another group of animals was allergized with OVA and also treated with dexamethasone (DEX) (G(OVA+DEX)). The control group (G(PBS)) received phosphate-buffered saline instead of OVA as placebo. Airway reactivity to intravenous methacholine was assessed. RESULTS The percentage of Gal-9-positive cells and their intracellular Gal-9 content and Th1/Th2 cytokine levels in the bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) were determined by flow cytometry. Gal-9 mRNA expression and protein level were measured in the lung tissue by real-time RT-PCR and Western blot. In G(OVA )mice, airway inflammation and mucus hypersecretion developed. DEX treatment inhibited the main features of experimental asthma. The number of Gal-9-positive lymphocytes, eosinophil and neutrophil granulocytes and the levels of Th2 cytokines were higher in the BAL of G(OVA) compared to G(PBS) or G(OVA+DEX )mice. Moreover, Gal-9 protein level was elevated in the lungs of G(OVA) mice. CONCLUSIONS These results suggest that Gal-9 plays a role as a mediator contributing to the development of allergic airway inflammation. Gal-9 may serve as a recruiter of eosinophil granulocytes and promoter of Th2 dominance.

Abstract
Abstract. The effects of dietary fish oil (FO), soybean oil (SO) and linseed oil (LO) (12 % crude fat content each) in African catfish (Clarias gariepinus) diets were tested on the fillet flesh quality, chemical and fatty acid (FA) composition, after 3 and 6 weeks of feeding. The bodyweight gain of fish and the fillet dry matter, crude protein and crude fat content was not different among the divergent treatments. High (>20 %) total n3 FA supplementation significantly increased the moisture loss of fillet (FO, LO). Applying the simple FA dilution model (JOBLING 2004a, 2004b), the incorporation dynamics of the most largely dosed FAs were accurately predictable after 3 weeks (R² between observed and estimated data for total n3 FAs: FO 0.95, LO 0.73 and for α-linolenic acid, LO 0.97). In the fillet FA composition the metabolism of n3 acids was more pronounced. The large provision of α-linolenic acid (LO) had a pronounced effect on the longchain, polyunsaturated n3 FA proportions (eicosapentaenoic and docosapentaenoic acids), while no effect was experienced on docosahexaenoic acid. This study suggests that daily bodyweight gain is not, while fillet flesh quality and FA composition is slightly compromised when fish oil is substituted for vegetable oils.

Abstract
The sarcoplasmic reticulum Ca(2+)-ATPase (SERCA) isoforms are normally expressed in coordination with the corresponding myosin heavy chain (MyHC) isoforms in the fibers of skeletal muscle but this coordination is often disrupted in pathological conditions. In the streptozotocin-induced diabetes of rats (stz-rats), the soleus muscle showed peripheral neuropathy and the SERCA2a level decreased in type I (slow-oxidative) fibers compared to the control muscles, whereas the expression of the corresponding slow MyHC1 did not change. No difference was found at the mRNA and protein levels of SERCA and MyHC isoforms in the whole soleus, except that the level of the SERCA2a protein specifically declined in stz-rats compared to the controls. This shows that the coordinated expression of SERCA2a and MyHC1 is disrupted at the SERCA2a protein level in the diabetic soleus. The results are in line with previous observations that regulators of the Ca-homeostasis may adapt faster to type I diabetes than the contractile elements.

The sarcoplasmic reticulum Ca(2+)-ATPase (SERCA) isoforms are normally expressed in coordination with the corresponding myosin heavy chain (MyHC) isoforms in the fibers of skeletal muscle but this coordination is often disrupted in pathological conditions. In the streptozotocin-induced diabetes of rats (stz-rats), the soleus muscle showed peripheral neuropathy and the SERCA2a level decreased in type I (slow-oxidative) fibers compared to the control muscles, whereas the expression of the corresponding slow MyHC1 did not change. No difference was found at the mRNA and protein levels of SERCA and MyHC isoforms in the whole soleus, except that the level of the SERCA2a protein specifically declined in stz-rats compared to the controls. This shows that the coordinated expression of SERCA2a and MyHC1 is disrupted at the SERCA2a protein level in the diabetic soleus. The results are in line with previous observations that regulators of the Ca-homeostasis may adapt faster to type I diabetes than the contractile elements.

Abstract
Numerical simulations on different kinds of realistic photonic bandgap fibers exhibiting reversed dispersion slope for the propagating fundamental mode are reported. We show that reversed or flat dispersion functions in a wide wavelength range using hollow-core, air-silica photonic bandgap fibers and solid core Bragg fibers with step-index profile can be obtained by introducing resonant structures in the fiber cladding. We evaluate the dispersion and confinement loss profiles of these fibers from the Helmholtz eigenvalue equation and the calculated fiber properties are used to investigate the propagation of chirped femtosecond pulses through serially connected hollow core fiber compressors.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Beneficial effects of dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) pretreatment were reported in ischaemia/reperfusion (I/R)-induced kidney damage. METHODS To investigate the mechanism of DHEA pretreatment during renal I/R injury, the left renal pedicles of DHEA- [G(DHEA); 4.0 mg/kg/day DHEA dissolved in propylene glycol (PG)] and PG-pretreated male Wistar rats (G(PG)) were clamped for 55 min followed by 2 (T(2)) and 24 h (T(24)) of reperfusion. Sham-operated, non-clamped animals (T(0)) served as controls in both groups. Renal function, kidney morphology and interleukin 1beta (IL-1beta), interleukin 6 (IL-6) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) expression were determined in the kidneys of both groups. RESULTS Renal functional parameters and kidney structure did not differ in G(DHEA) versus G(PG) at any time point. Renal mRNA expression of IL-1beta was lower at T(0), while IL-6 at T(2) was lower in G(DHEA) than in G(PG).While renal VEGF mRNA expression remained unchanged, protein levels were increased at T(2) and T(24 )compared to T(0) kidneys in both groups. VEGF protein levels were lower at T(2) and T(24 )in G(DHEA) than in G(PG). CONCLUSION We found that DHEA pretreatment alters renal IL-1beta, IL-6 and VEGF synthesis. Moreover, contrary changes in VEGF mRNA and protein levels suggest that VEGF synthesis - distinct from other organs - might be primarily posttranscriptionally regulated in postischaemic rat kidneys.

Abstract
A case of an 8-year-old girl with unilateral retinoblastoma is presented. The clinical picture was dominated by inflammatory signs and retinal detachment. Ultrasonographic A/B-scan showed a funnel-shaped total retinal detachment and a thick solid mass with similar shape just behind it. The main characteristics of the mass were: irregular inside echo pattern, medium high internal reflectivity, no sign of vascularity, no after movements following a sudden ocular movement, and no shadowing of the scleral or orbital tissues behind it. The vitreous cavity in front of the retina and behind the mass was ultrasonographically clear. The described funnel-shaped echographic pattern might be typical of the diffuse infiltrating retinoblastoma.

Abstract
Lipedema is a disproportional obesity featuring frequent hematoma formation due to even minor traumatic injuries. On the basis of clinical observations, complete decongestive physiotherapy diminishes the incidence of hematomas due to minor injuries beyond leg volume reduction. Hematoma development may be caused by altered capillary resistance (CR) or altered capillary fragility (CF). We measured capillary fragility (CF) before and after complex decongestive physiotherapy (CDP) to examine, whether CDP could reduce CF. 38 women with lipedema were included in the study. Twenty-one (21) patients were treated with CDP and 17 using exclusively moisturizers as the control group. CDP comprised once daily manual lymph drainage, intermittent pneumatic compression and multilayered short-stretch bandaging performed throughout a 5-day-course. CF was evaluated with the vacuum suction method (VSM) using Parrot's angiosterrometer in both groups. Decongestive therapy resulted in a significant reduction of the number of petechiae while no change was detected within the control group. Complete decongestive physiotherapy significantly reduced CF in patients with lipedema and this reduction may lead to reduced hematoma formation.

Abstract
Experimental and clinical trials in the field of bone biology helped to clarify the role of receptors, which belong to the tumor necrosis factor family, such as osteoprotegerin and receptor activator of nuclear factor kappaB (RANK), in the regulation of bone remodeling. The ligand of the receptor activator of nuclear factor kappaB (RANKL) is a stimulator of bone resorption, while osteoprotegerin is the soluble "decoy" receptor to RANKL, protecting thereby bone from resorption. Pathological states of bone remodeling (like osteoporosis) are associated with imbalance in the activity of osteoprotegerin and the receptor activator of nuclear factor kappaB. Recent studies, however, also indicate that the osteoprotegerin/RANKL/RANK system has important roles in the regulation of the immune and vascular system as well. In this review we summarize the function and regulation of osteoprotegerin, its role in pathological states--primarily in cardiovascular diseases--and its relevance as a marker of cardiovascular risk. Finally, we present our prospective trial performed among the chronic dialyzed patients, where we examined the association between the cardiovascular mortality, osteoprotegerin levels and the arterial stiffness.

Abstract
20-Hydroxyecdysone (20E) is an ecdysteroid hormone that regulates moulting in insects. Interestingly, 20E is also found most abundantly in plant species and has anabolic effects in vertebrates, i.e. increasing muscle size without androgen influence. The effect of 20E on slow and fast fiber types of skeletal muscle has not been reported yet. Here we present that 20E affects the size (cross-sectional area, CSA) of the different fiber types in a muscle-specific manner. The effect on fiber size was modified by the distance from the site of the treatment and the presence of a regenerating soleus muscle in the animal. Besides the fiber size, 20E also increased the myonuclear number in the fibers of normal and regenerating muscles, suggesting the activation of satellite cells. According to our results 20E may provide an alternative for substitution of anabolic-androgenic steroids in therapeutic treatments against muscle atrophy.

Abstract
A two-way selection procedure was performed on a Landrace pig line. First the cardiac output (CO) values (6.89 +/- 1.27 L/min) were estimated by ECG-gated magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to quantify the heart performance of the boars (n = 30), then total body skeletal muscle volume (MVTB; 48.7 +/- 5.17 dm3) was determined applying spiral computerised tomography (CT). The relative cardiac output value (RCO) was developed, expressing the relationship between CO and MVTB. Four superior [RCO value below 6.7 dm3 / (L x min(-1))] and one minus variant [(8.97 dm3 / (L x min(-1))] boars were taken into breeding. The best fifteen percentage of the first generation males (n = 30) was characterised according to their RCO values. Significant difference was found between the developed performance measure of the progenies of minus and plus variant boars [8.2 +/- 0.65 and 5.63 +/- 0.70 dm3 / (L x min(-1)), n = 7 and 23], respectively. Comparing the existing five progeny groups, all of the 'HP+' groups differed significantly from the 'HP-' one, where the largest heart performance contrast found was 3.2 dm3 / (L x min(-1)). Based upon the results, the selection is being continued on a larger population.

Abstract
The sarco-endoplasmic reticulum Ca2+ ATP-ase (SERCA) and myosin heavy chain (MyHC) levels were measured in hindlimb-denervated and selectively denervated rat soleus muscles. Selective denervation allowed passive movement of the soleus, whereas hindlimb denervation rendered it to passivity. To minimize chronic effects, we followed the changes only for 2 weeks. Selective denervation resulted in less muscle atrophy, a faster slow-to-fast transition of MyHC isoforms, and less coordinated expressions of the slow vs fast isoforms of MyHC and SERCA. Generally, expression of the slow-twitch type SERCA2a was found to be less dependent, whereas the slow-twitch type MyHC1 was the most dependent on innervation. Our study shows that passive movement is able to ameliorate denervation-induced atrophy of the soleus and that it also accentuates the dyscoordination in the expression of the corresponding slow and fast isoforms of MyHC and SERCA.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Osteoprotegerin (OPG) is a marker and regulator of arterial calcification, and it is related to cardiovascular survival in haemodialysis patients. The link between OPG and aortic stiffening--a consequence of arterial calcification--has not been previously evaluated in this population, and it is not known whether OPG-related mortality risk is mediated by arterial stiffening. METHODS At baseline, OPG and aortic pulse wave velocity (PWV) were measured in 98 chronic haemodialysis patients who were followed for a median of 24 months. The relationship between OPG and PWV was assessed by multivariate linear regression. The role of PWV in mediating OPG related cardiovascular mortality was evaluated by including both OPG and PWV in the same survival model. RESULTS At baseline mean (standard deviation) PWV was 11.2 (3.3) m/s and median OPG (interquartile range) was 11.1 (7.5-15.9) pmol/L. There was a strong, positive, linear relationship between PWV and lnOPG (P = 0.009, model R(2) = 0.540) independent of covariates. During follow-up 23 patients died of cardiovascular causes. In separate univariate survival models both PWV and lnOPG were related to cardiovascular mortality [hazard ratios 1.31 (1.14-1.50) and 8.96 (3.07-26.16), respectively]. When both PWV and lnOPG were entered into the same model, only lnOPG remained significantly associated with cardiovascular mortality [hazard ratio 1.11 (0.93-1.33) and 7.18 (1.89-27.25), respectively). CONCLUSION In haemodialysis patients OPG is strongly related to PWV and OPG related cardiovascular mortality risk is, in part, mediated by increased PWV.

Abstract
Batch and continuous experiments using model and real wastewaters were conducted to investigate the effect of metal salt (ferric and alum) addition in wastewater treatment and the corresponding phosphate removal from a design and operational perspective. Key factors expected to influence the phosphorus removal efficiency, such as pH, alkalinity, metal dose, metal type, initial and residual phosphate concentration, mixing, reaction time, age of flocs, and organic content of wastewater, were investigated. The lowest achievable concentration of orthophosphate under optimal conditions (0.01 to 0.05 mg/L) was similar for both aluminum and iron salts, with a broad optimum pH range of 5.0 to 7.0. Thus, in the typical operating range of wastewater treatment plants, pH is not a sensitive indicator of phosphorus removal efficiency. The most significant effect for engineering practice, apart from the metal dose, is that of mixing intensity and slow kinetic removal of phosphorus in contact with the chemical sludge formed. Experiments show that significant savings in chemical cost could be achieved by vigorously mixing the added chemical at the point of dosage and, if conditions allow, providing a longer contact time between the metal hydroxide flocs and the phosphate content of the wastewater. These conditions promoted the achievement of less than 0.1 mg/L residual orthophosphate content, even at lower metal-to-phosphorus molar ratios. These observations are consistent with the surface complexation model presented in a companion paper (Smith et al., 2008).
