Abstract
Eels are gonochoristic species whose gonadal differentiation initiates at the yellow eel stage and is influenced by environmental factors. We revealed some sex-related genes were sex dimorphically expressed in gonads during gonadal sex differentiation of Japanese eel (Anguilla japonica); however, the expression of sex-related genes in the brain-pituitary during gonadal sex differentiation in eels is still unclear. This study aimed to investigate the sex-related gene expressions in the brain-pituitary and tried to clarify their roles in the brain and gonads during gonadal sex differentiation. Based on our previous histological study, the control eels developed as males, and estradiol-17β (E2) was used for feminization. Our results showed that during testicular differentiation, the brain cyp19a1 transcripts and aromatase proteins were increased significantly; moreover, the cyp19a1, sf-1, foxl2s, and esrs (except gperb) transcripts in the midbrain/pituitary also were increased significantly. Forebrain gnrh1 transcripts increased slightly during gonadal differentiation of both sexes, but the gnrhr1b and gnrhr2 transcripts in the midbrain/pituitary were stable during gonadal differentiation. The expression levels of gths and gh in the midbrain/pituitary were significantly increased during testicular differentiation and were much higher in males than in E2-feminized females. These results implied that endogenous estrogens might play essential roles in the brain/pituitary during testicular differentiation, sf-1, foxl2s, and esrs may have roles in cyp19a1 regulation in the midbrain/pituitary of Japanese eels. For the GnRH-GTH axis, gths, especially fshb, may be regulated by esrs and involved in regulating testicular differentiation and development in Japanese eels.

Abstract
The European eel (Anguilla anguilla) is a fascinating species, exhibiting a complex life cycle. The species is, however, listed as critically endangered on the IUCN Red List due to an amalgam of factors, including habitat loss. This study investigated the burrowing behaviour and substrate preference of glass, elver and yellow stages of A. anguilla. Preference was determined by introducing eels in aquaria with different substrates and evaluating the chosen substrate for burrowing. In addition, burrowing was recorded using a camera in all substrate types and analysed for kinematics. The experiments showed that all of these life stages sought refuge in the sediments with particle sizes ranging from sand to coarse gravel. Starting from a resting position, they shook their head horizontally in combination with rapid body undulations until half of their body was within the substrate. High-speed X-ray videography revealed that once partly in the sediment, eels used only horizontal head sweeps to penetrate further, without the use of their tail. Of the substrates tested, burrowing performance was highest in fine gravel (diameter 1-2 mm; lower burrowing duration, less body movements and/or lower frequency of movements), and all eels readily selected this substrate for burrowing. However, glass eels and elvers were able to use coarse gravel (diameter >8 mm) because their smaller size allowed manoeuvring through the spaces between the grains. Further, burrowing performance increased with body size: glass eels required more body undulations compared to yellow eels. Interestingly, the urge to hide within the sediment was highest for glass eels and elvers. Documentation of substrate preference and burrowing behaviour of A. anguilla provides new information about their potential habitat use. Considering that habitat alterations and deteriorations are partly responsible for the decline of the eel, this information can contribute to the development of more effective conservation measures.

Abstract
Low egg quality and embryonic survival are critical challenges in aquaculture, where assisted reproduction procedures and other factors may impact egg quality. This includes European eel (Anguilla anguilla), where pituitary extract from carp (CPE) or salmon (SPE) is applied to override a dopaminergic inhibition of the neuroendocrine system, preventing gonadotropin secretion and gonadal development. The present study used either CPE or SPE to induce vitellogenesis in female European eel and compared impacts on egg quality and offspring developmental competence with emphasis on the maternal-to-zygotic transition (MZT). Females treated with SPE produced significantly higher proportions of floating eggs with fewer cleavage abnormalities and higher embryonic survival. These findings related successful embryogenesis to higher abundance of mRNA transcripts of genes involved in cell adhesion, activation of MZT, and immune response (dcbld1, epcam, oct4, igm) throughout embryonic development. The abundance of mRNA transcripts of cldnd, foxr1, cea, ccna1, ccnb1, ccnb2, zar1, oct4, and npm2 was relatively stable during the first eight hours, followed by a drop during MZT and low levels thereafter, indicating transfer and subsequent clearance of maternal mRNA. mRNA abundance of zar1, epcam, and dicer1 was associated with cleavage abnormalities, while mRNA abundance of zar1, sox2, foxr1, cldnd, phb2, neurod4, and neurog1 (before MZT) was associated with subsequent embryonic survival. In a second pattern, low initial mRNA abundance with an increase during MZT and higher levels persisting thereafter indicating the activation of zygotic transcription. mRNA abundance of ccna1, npm2, oct4, neurod4, and neurog1 during later embryonic development was associated with hatch success. A deviating pattern was observed for dcbld1, which mRNA levels followed the maternal-effect gene pattern but only for embryos from SPE treated females. Together, the differences in offspring production and performance reported in this study show that PE composition impacts egg quality and embryogenesis and in particular, the transition from initial maternal transcripts to zygotic transcription.

Abstract
The role of gonadotropins during early ovarian development in fish remains little understood. Concentrations of gonadotropins were therefore experimentally elevated in vivo by administration of recombinant follicle-stimulating hormone (rec-Fsh) or human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) and the effects on ovarian morphology, sex steroid levels and mRNA levels of genes expressed in pituitary and ovary examined. Hormones were injected thrice at weekly intervals in different doses (20, 100 or 500 µg/kg BW for rec-Fsh and 20, 100 or 500 IU/kg BW for hCG). All treatments, especially at the highest doses of either rec-Fsh or hCG, induced ovarian development, reflected in increased oocyte size and lipid uptake. Both gonadotropins up-regulated follicle-stimulating hormone receptor (fshr) mRNA levels and plasma levels of estradiol-17β (E2). Exogenous gonadotropins largely decreased the expression of follicle-stimulating hormone β-subunit (fshb) and had little effect on those of luteinizing hormone β-subunit (lhb) in the pituitary. It is proposed that the effects of hCG on ovarian development in previtellogenic eels could be indirect as a significant increase in plasma levels of 11-ketotestosterone (11-KT) was found in eels treated with hCG. Using rec-Fsh and hCG has potential for inducing puberty in eels in captivity, and indeed, in teleost fish at large.

Abstract
Dmrt1, doublesex- and mab-3-related transcription factor-1, has been suggested to play critical roles in male gonadogenesis, testicular differentiation and development, including spermatogenesis, among different vertebrates. Vasa is a putative molecular marker of germ cells in vertebrates. In this study, we cloned the full-length dmrt1 cDNA from Japanese eel, and the protein comprised 290 amino acids and presented an extremely conserved Doublesex and Mab-3 (DM) domain. Vasa proteins were expressed in gonadal germ cells in a stage-specific manner, and were expressed at high levels in PGC and spermatogonia, low levels in spermatocytes, and were absent in spermatids and spermatozoa of Japanese eels. Dmrt1 proteins were abundantly expressed in spermatogonia B cells, spermatocytes, spermatids, but not in spermatozoa, spermatogonia A and Sertoli cells. To our knowledge, this study is the first to show a restricted expression pattern for the Dmrt1 protein in spermatogonia B cells, but not spermatogonia A cells, of teleosts. Therefore, Dmrt1 might play vital roles at the specific stages during spermatogenesis from spermatogonia B cells to spermatids in the Japanese eel. Moreover, the Dmrt1 protein exhibited a restricted localization in differentiating oogonia in the early differentiating gonad (ovary-like structure) of male Japanese eels and in E2-induced feminized Japanese eels. We proposed that dmrt1 may be not only required for spermatogenesis but might also play a role in oogenesis in the Japanese eel.

Abstract
Fish movements between aquatic habitats of different salinity ranges (fresh, estuarine, marine) by the tropical catadromous eels Anguilla bicolor bicolor and A. bicolor pacifica were examined by analysing the otolith strontium and calcium concentrations of yellow (immature) and silver (mature) stage eels collected in south-east Asian (Indonesia, Malaysia and Vietnam) waters. The ratios suggest that all migratory-type eels, including freshwater, brackish water and marine residents, pass the river mouth. However, the habitat preference was different among the sites (countries). In Indonesia and Vietnam, most A. bicolor bicolor and A. bicolor pacifica were either marine or brackish water residents in this study. Alternatively, most A. bicolor bicolor were freshwater residents in Malaysia; such a typical catadromous migration pattern in these eels has not been found in previous studies. The wide range of otolith Sr:Ca in both subspecies indicates that the habitat use of these tropical eels was opportunistic among fresh, brackish and marine waters during their growth phases following recruitment to coastal areas. The geographical variability of migratory histories suggests that habitat use might be determined by the inter and intraspecific competition and environmental conditions at each site.

Abstract
Temperature is a major factor that modulates the development and reactivity of the immune system. Only limited knowledge exists regarding the immune system of the catadromous European eel, Anguilla anguilla, especially during the oceanic early life history stages. Thus, a new molecular toolbox was developed, involving tissue specific characterisation of 3 housekeeping genes, 9 genes from the innate and 3 genes from the adaptive immune system of this species. The spatial pattern of immune genes reflected their function, e.g. complement component c3 was mainly produced in liver and il10 in the head kidney. Subsequently, the ontogeny of the immune system was studied in larvae reared from hatch to first-feeding at four temperatures, spanning their thermal tolerance range (16, 18, 20, and 22 °C). Expression of some genes (c3 and igm) declined post hatch, whilst expression of most other genes (mhc2, tlr2, il1β, irf3, irf7) increased with larval age. At the optimal temperature, 18 °C, this pattern of immune-gene expression revealed an immunocompromised phase between hatch (0 dph) and teeth-development (8 dph). The expression of two of the studied genes (mhc2, lysc) was temperature dependent, leading to increased mRNA levels at 22 °C. Additionally, at the lower end of the thermal spectrum (16 °C) immune competency appeared reduced, whilst close to the upper thermal limit (22 °C) larvae showed signs of thermal stress. Thus, protection against pathogens is probably impaired at temperatures close to the critical thermal maximum (CTmax), impacting survival and productivity in hatcheries and natural recruitment.

Abstract
The recent discovery of illicit drugs in the aquatic environment has raised concerns about the possible effects on the aquatic fauna, because of the pharmacological activity of these substances. Cocaine is an illicit drug widespread in surface waters since it is the third most widely used drug in North America, Western and Central Europe, and the second in Latin America and the Caribbean. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of environmental concentrations of cocaine on the gills of the European eel (Anguilla anguilla). The gills of male silver eels exposed to 20 ng L-1 of cocaine for fifty days were compared to control, vehicle control and post-exposure recovery ten days groups. The following parameters were evaluated: the thickness of the interlamellar epithelium (TIE), the length of the secondary lamellae (LSL) and the fraction of the interlamellar epithelium and the secondary lamellae occupied by the mucous cells (MC(IE-SL)FA) 3) the plasma cortisol and prolactin levels. After cocaine exposure, the gill epithelium appeared hyperplastic. The following changes were observed: proliferation in the interlamellar epithelium; partial and total fusion of the secondary lamellae, that appeared shortened and dilated; epithelial lifting and aneurism in the secondary lamellae. Moreover, in cocaine exposed eels, an increase in TIE and MC(IE-SL)FA and a decrease in LSL were observed. These changes were still present ten days after the interruption of cocaine exposure. Plasma levels of both cortisol and prolactin increased after cocaine exposure; ten days after the interruption of cocaine exposure, the plasma cortisol levels were still higher, whereas the plasma prolactin levels were lower, than control values. Our results show that even a chronic exposure to low environmental cocaine concentrations severely harms the eel gills, suggesting damages to their functions, and potentially affecting the survival of this species.

Abstract
Japanese eel (Anguilla japonica) has become a commercially important fish species all over the world. High-density aquaculture has led to congestion and contributed to bacterial infection outbreaks that have caused high mortality. Therefore a 56-days feeding trial was conducted to determine the effects of dietary Bacillus amyloliquefaciens (GB-9) and Yarrowia lipolytica lipase2 (YLL2) on growth performance, digestive enzymes activity, innate immunity and resistance to pathogens of A. japonica. Fish growth performance was significantly affected by dietary YLL2 supplementation but not by GB-9. Fish fed diets with YLL2 at 2.0 g/kg diet in combination of high and low levels of GB-9 (5.0 g/kg and 2.0 g/kg) produced the highest growth. For digestive enzyme, lipase and trypsin activities was promoted by dietary containing YLL2, while amylase activities was increased by dietary containing YLL2, GB-9 single or combination. For innate immunity, the mucus lysozyme activity, leukocytes phagocytosis activity and reactive oxygen species level of skin, peroxidase and lysozyme activity of serum were enhanced in fish fed with GB-9 compared to those in control group (p < 0.05). The highest resistance to Vibrio anguillarum and Aeromonas hydrophila was determined in fish fed with 5.0 g kg-1 GB-9 + 2.0 g/kg YLL2. This study demonstrated that GB-9 and YLL2 enhanced non-specific immune defense system of A. japonica, providing them with higher resistance to pathogens. The present results suggested that the combination of these supplements could be considered as potential biological additives for aquaculture farmed fish.

Abstract
The Japanese eel (Anguilla japonica) is among the most important aquaculture fish species in Eastern Asia. The present study aimed to identify the genetic parameters underlying body size and the timing at metamorphosis from leptocephali to glass eels in captive-bred Japanese eels, with the intent to foster sustainable development. Larvae from a partly factorial cross (14 sires × 11 dams) were reared until the point of metamorphosis into glass eels. In these organisms, we observed moderate heritability and mild genetic correlations among traits related to body size (h2 = 0.16–0.33) and timing at metamorphosis (h2 = 0.36–0.41). In an F1 full-sib family, quantitative trait loci (QTL) mapping for these traits identified one significant (genome-wide P < 0.05) and five suggestive QTLs (chromosome-wide P < 0.05). These results suggest that in the Japanese eel, metamorphic traits exhibit a polygenic genetic structure comprising many QTLs with small effects. In addition, we updated the genetic linkage map for the Japanese eel and integrated it with our newly constructed de novo genome assembly. The information and tools generated from this study will contribute to the development of freshwater eel genetics and genomics.

Abstract
The age and growth of migrating tropical eels, Anguilla celebesensis and Anguilla marmorata from central Sulawesi, Indonesia, were examined. Migrating eels (63 A. celebesensis and 38 A. marmorata) were obtained from weirs near the Poso Lake outlet and non-migrating eels (35 A. celebesensis and 119 A. marmorata) were captured by baited hooks, eel pots, scoop net and electro-fishing in the Poso River system, Laa River system, Baluga River, Tongku River and Padapu River from February 2009 to October 2010. In both species, the proportion of eels with opaque otolith edges showed a single peak in July, suggesting that one annulus (a pair of translucent and opaque zones) was formed each year in their otoliths. Mean ± s.d. and range of total length (LT ) and age was 785·2 ± 114·9 (585-1083) mm and 7·5 ± 1·6 (5-11) years in migrating female A. celebesensis and 1132·2 ± 173·7 (800-1630) mm and 11·6 ± 3·3 (7-23) years in A. marmorata. The age of migrating female eels was negatively correlated with annual growth rate, 100·7 ± 17·2 (68·1-145·0) mm year-1 in A. celebesensis and 97·9 ± 19·3 (66·6-131·6) mm year-1 in A. marmorata, but there was no significant correlation between the LT and annual growth rate in either species. The annual growth rates of these female tropical eels were typically higher than those of temperate anguillid species, suggesting a latitudinal cline in growth rate in the genus Anguilla reflecting the environmental conditions of their growth habitat.

Abstract
Infection patterns of the invasive Anguillicola crassus nematode were investigated in a population of the European eel Anguilla anguilla where parasite invasion is very recent, Loch Lomond, Scotland. Intensity levels of the parasite were associated with differences in fish ontogeny and trophic ecology. Although eels foraged on both fish and invertebrates, individuals which were smaller and fed on invertebrates (>70% contribution to diet) were found to contain a greater number of swim bladder parasites compared to larger eel with a predominance of fish (>60% contribution) in their diet. Within affected fish, a significant negative relationship was found between fish length and parasite intensity, with smaller individuals having higher parasite intensity than larger individuals. This study indicates that food intake and infection risk are linked in this recently infected host-parasite system. From a management perspective increasing our understanding of how infection intensity and repeated exposure is linked to resource use in an ecosystem is important for the future management of this endangered species in Europe.

Abstract
Temperature is important for optimization of rearing conditions in aquaculture, especially during the critical early life history stages of fish. Here, we experimentally investigated the impact of temperature (16, 18, 20, 22 and 24°C) on thermally induced phenotypic variability, from larval hatch to first-feeding, and the linked expression of targeted genes [heat shock proteins (hsp), growth hormone (gh) and insulin-like growth factors (igf)] associated to larval performance of European eel, Anguilla anguilla. Temperature effects on larval morphology and gene expression were investigated throughout early larval development (in real time from 0 to 18 days post hatch) and at specific developmental stages (hatch, jaw/teeth formation, and first-feeding). Results showed that hatch success, yolk utilization efficiency, survival, deformities, yolk utilization, and growth rates were all significantly affected by temperature. In real time, increasing temperature from 16 to 22°C accelerated larval development, while larval gene expression patterns (hsp70, hsp90, gh and igf-1) were delayed at cold temperatures (16°C) or accelerated at warm temperatures (20–22°C). All targeted genes (hsp70, hsp90, gh, igf-1, igf-2a, igf-2b) were differentially expressed during larval development. Moreover, expression of gh was highest at 16°C during the jaw/teeth formation, and the first-feeding developmental stages, while expression of hsp90 was highest at 22°C, suggesting thermal stress. Furthermore, 24°C was shown to be deleterious (resulting in 100% mortality), while 16°C and 22°C (~50 and 90% deformities respectively) represent the lower and upper thermal tolerance limits. In conclusion, the high survival, lowest incidence of deformities at hatch, high yolk utilization efficiency, high gh and low hsp expression, suggest 18°C as the optimal temperature for offspring of European eel. Furthermore, our results suggest that the still enigmatic early life history stages of European eel may inhabit the deeper layer of the Sargasso Sea and indicate vulnerability of this critically endangered species to increasing ocean temperature.

Abstract
The current experiment was conducted to evaluate and compare the efficacy of two different probiotics Bacillus subtilis WB60 and Lactobacillus plantarum KCTC3928 in diet of Japanese eel, Anguilla japonica. Seven experimental diets were formulated to contain no probiotics (CON), three graded levels of B. subtilis at 106 (BS1), 107 (BS2), 108 (BS3) and L. plantarum at 106 (LP1), 107 (LP2), 108 (LP3) CFU/g diet. Twenty fish averaging 8.29 ± 0.06 g were distributed in to 21 aquaria and were randomly assigned to one of the experimental diets in triplicate groups. Average weight gain (WG), feed efficiency (FE), and protein efficiency ratio (PER) of fish fed B. subtilis at 107 (BS2) and 108 (BS3) CFU/g diet were significantly higher than those of fish fed other experimental diets (P < 0.05). Nonspecific enzymatic activities including lysozyme, superoxide dismutase (SOD), myeloperoxidase (MPO) from fish fed B. subtilis at 107 (BS2) and 108 (BS3) CFU/g diet were detected to be significantly higher than that from fish fed CON diet (P < 0.05). Whereas, level of intestine glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH), heat shock protein 70, 90 (HSP70, 90) and immunoglobulin (IgM) from fish fed B. subtilis at 107 and 108 CFU/g diet were recorded to be significantly higher than those of fish fed other experimental diets (P < 0.05). Parameters for intestinal morphology and histology suggested a healthier gut for the fish fed108 (BS3) CFU/g diet as compared to other treatment groups. Whereas, results from the disease challenge test with bacteria Vibrio angulillarum showed significantly lower survival rate for fish fed CON diet than those of fish fed other experimental diets. Therefore, these results indicated that oral supplement of B. subtilis at 108 (BS3) CFU/g diet could be a more effective source of probiotic compared to L. plantarum in Japanese eel.

Abstract
The present study investigated the potential role of conspecific chemical cues in inland juvenile American eel Anguilla rostrata migrations by assessing glass eel and 1 year old elver affinities to elver washings, and elver affinity to adult yellow eel washings. In two-choice maze assays, glass eels were attracted to elver washings, but elvers were neither attracted to nor repulsed by multiple concentrations of elver washings or to yellow eel washings. These results suggest that A. rostrata responses to chemical cues may be life-stage dependent and that glass eels moving inland may use the odour of the previous year class as information to guide migration. The role of chemical cues and olfaction in eel migrations warrants further investigation as a potential restoration tool.

Abstract
To study growth rates, movements and estimate population size of shortfin eels Anguilla australis in a small lake (2·5 ha) near Christchurch, New Zealand, 617 A. australis were tagged with PIT tags. Tag retention was high (95%) and over the seven recapture events spread over 2 years, 55% of tagged A. australis were recaptured. Growth of recaptured A. australis averaged 13·1 mm year(-1) and declined slightly with increasing total length. Distance moved from original capture site increased with increasing time at large. Population estimates of A. australis > 400 mm (susceptible to capture by fyke net) from recaptures of individuals averaged 1451 A. australis, with a biomass of 170 kg ha(-1) . An average of 6·6% of the estimated total population matured as male silver A. australis each year. Results from radio-tracking of four A. australis gave an average nightly foraging area of 2780 m(2) , and there was no apparent preference for inshore movement (within 5-6 m of the shoreline) or offshore movement. Fyke-net efficiency (total catch relative to the estimated total population available to each net) measured over four consecutive nights fishing was 88%. The lack of precision of the shoreline triangulation system used, ±10 m, meant that the positional data were considered too coarse to be used in a proposed novel population estimation technique based on determining population size within foraging areas.

Abstract
Previous research using eels has shown that 11-ketotestosterone can induce ovarian triacylglyceride accumulation both in vivo and in vitro. Further, accumulation is dramatically enhanced in the presence of very-low density lipoprotein. This study examined the involvement of the low density lipoprotein receptor and vitellogenin receptor in oocyte lipid accumulation. Specific antisera were used in an attempt to block the vitellogenin receptor and/or the low density lipoprotein receptor. Accordingly, incubation with the low density lipoprotein receptor antiserum clearly reduced the oocyte diameter and the amount of oil present within the oocyte. In contrast, blocking the vitellogenin receptor had little effect on either oocyte surface area or the abundance of oil droplets in the cytosol. In keeping with birds, we conclude that the low density lipoprotein receptor is a major player involved in mediating ovarian fatty acid accumulation in the eel. However, lipoprotein lipase-mediated fatty acid accumulation also remains conceivable, for example through interactions between this enzyme and the low density lipoprotein receptor.

Abstract
Estradiol-17β (E2) and maturation-inducing hormone (MIH) are two steroid hormones produced in the teleost ovary that are required for vitellogenic growth and final oocyte maturation and ovulation. During this transition, the main steroid hormone produced in the ovary shifts from estrogens to progestogens. In the commercially important Japanese eel (Anguilla japonica), the MIH 17α,20β-dihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one (DHP) is generated from its precursor by P450c17, which has both 17α-hydroxylase and C17-20 lyase activities. In order to elucidate the regulatory mechanism underlying the steroidogenic shift from E2 to DHP and the mechanistic basis for the failure of this shift in artificially matured eels, the cDNA for cyp17a2-which encodes P450c17-II-was isolated from the ovary of wild, mature Japanese eel and characterized, and the expression patterns of cyp17a1 and cyp17a2 during induced ovarian development were investigated in cultured eel ovaries. Five cDNAs (types I-V) encoding P450c17-II were identified that had minor sequence variations. HEK293T cells transfected with all but type II P450c17-II converted exogenous progesterone to 17α-hydroxyprogesterone (17α-P), providing evidence for 17α-hydroxylase activity; however, a failure to convert 17α-P to androstenedione indicated that C17-20 lyase activity was absent. Cyp17a2 mRNA was expressed mainly in the head kidney, ovary, and testis, and quantitative PCR analysis demonstrated that expression in the ovary increased during induced vitellogenesis and oocyte maturation/ovulation. In contrast, P450c17-I showed both 17α-hydroxylase and C17-20 lyase activities, and cyp17a1 expression increased until the mid-vitellogenic stage and remained high thereafter. Considering the high level of cyp17a2 transcript in the eel ovary at the migratory nucleus stage together with our previous report demonstrating that eel ovaries have strong 17α-P-to-DHP conversion activity, the failure of artificially maturing eels to produce the maturation-inducing DHP may be explained by a deficiency in 17α-P production due to the persistence of cyp17a1 expression after the completion of vitellogenesis.

Abstract
Recruitment of the European eel (Anguilla anguilla) has fallen steadily in recent decades, with current levels understood to be at around 5% of those in the 1970s, and the species is now widely recognised as being endangered. Changes in ocean currents, climate shifts, habitat loss, overfishing, barriers to migration, increased predation, plastic litter and exposure to chemicals have all been postulated as potential causative factors. Several studies have shown a general decline in eel quality (lower lipid content and body condition) over time that may be linked to reduced reproductive success. In this study, data from an eel sampling campaign in 1987 are compared with recent data (2004-2008) for eels in Scotland to assess any temporal changes in eel quality indicators and also to assess any links between current levels of chemical exposure and eel quality. Mean lipid levels, as a percentage of wet muscle mass, were higher in 2004-2008 (37 ± 1.9% SE) than in 1986 (21 ± 0.9% SE). By contrast, mean body condition index (K) was slightly lower in the latter period. Considering the 2004-2008 samples, significant inter-site variation was observed for condition index K, while intra-site variation was observed for lipid content and physical parameters relative to age (i.e. mass/age, length/age and lipid/age ratios); however, the variations observed could not be linked to differences in chemical body burdens, indicating that no chemical impacts on the parameters assessed are discernible during the continental life stage of eels in Scotland.

Abstract
In 1998, 9500 juvenile New Zealand longfin eels Anguilla dieffenbachii (mean total length, LT , 42 cm) captured from the lower Clutha River were transferred upstream to Lake Hawea, a high-country oligotrophic lake in the same catchment where recruitment of juvenile eels has been prevented by hydroelectric dams since 1958. A total of 2010 of the transferred A. dieffenbachii were tagged with coded wire tags. Ten years later in 2008, the A. dieffenbachii population in Lake Hawea was sampled resulting in 399 recaptures (distinguishable by the presence of tags and by LT from the remnant resident population of large old A. dieffenbachii) of the 1998 transfers; 79 (19·2%) of the recaptured fish had tags compared with 21·3% at release, indicating good tag retention and low mortality due to tagging. All recaptured tagged A. dieffenbachii were female. Mean annual growth over the 10 years since release was 3·80 cm year(-1) for all recaptures and 3·65 cm year(-1) for tag recaptures, and both were significantly greater than the estimate of 2·38 cm year(-1) at release. After release, mean condition (K) increased significantly (P < 0·001) for all recaptures and tag recaptures. Annual length growth increment was linear. Tag recaptures showed significant increases in somatic growth rate post-transfer, and otoliths from the 2008 recaptured A. dieffenbachii were examined to see whether any similar enhanced growth after transfer was incorporated into the otolith structure that would serve as a date stamp. Measurement of otolith ring radii indicated that an increase in the radius occurred on most otoliths corresponding to the year after transfer. Because there was 9 years of completed growth following the observed growth inflection on the otoliths, this was strong evidence that opaque rings were formed annually.

Abstract
There is increasing evidence that pollutants may cause diseases via epigenetic modifications. Epigenetic mechanisms such as DNA methylation participate in the regulation of gene transcription. Surprisingly, epigenetics research is still limited in ecotoxicology. In this study, we investigated whether chronic exposure to contaminants experienced by wild female fish (Anguilla anguilla) throughout their juvenile phase can affect the DNA methylation status of their oocytes during gonad maturation. Thus, fish were sampled in two locations presenting a low or a high contamination level. Then, fish were transferred to the laboratory and artificially matured. Before hormonal treatment, the DNA methylation levels of the genes encoding for the aromatase and the receptor of the follicle stimulating hormone were higher in contaminated fish than in fish from the clean site. For the hormone receptor, this hypermethylation was positively correlated with the contamination level of fish and was associated with a decrease in its transcription level. In addition, whereas gonad growth was associated with an increase in DNA methylation in fish from the clean site, no changes were observed in contaminated fish in response to hormonal treatment. Finally, a higher gonad growth was observed in fish from the reference site in comparison to contaminated fish.

Abstract
A simple approach is proposed to fit a body growth model for the European eel Anguilla anguilla to data-poor case studies. The model is a modified von Bertalanffy curve allowing for delayed sex determination and sexual dimorphism. The proposed procedure provides preliminary estimates of model parameters on the basis of average age and body length of silver eels.

Abstract
The European eel is a critically endangered species that cannot be reproduced in captivity yet. Artificial maturation of female European eels can be achieved via a laborious and expensive procedure, including weekly injections with pituitary extracts for up to 6 months. The success rate is highly variable and a minimally invasive method for early selection of responsive eels would prevent the unnecessary and lengthy treatment of non-responding individuals. Since sexual maturation of European eels is accompanied by morphological changes of the pectoral fin, we examined whether fin could be used to monitor the response to the hormone treatment. Farmed eels were subjected to weekly injections with pituitary extracts and representative groups were sampled at 0 and 14-18 weeks of hormone treatment. Responders and non-responders were identified based on the gonado-somatic index. Transcriptomes of pectoral fin samples obtained at the start and end of the trial were mapped using Illumina RNAseq. Responders showed 384 and non-responders only 54 differentially expressed genes. Highly stringent selection based on minimum expression levels and fold-changes and a manual re-annotation round yielded 23 up-regulated and 21 down-regulated maturation marker genes. The up-regulated markers belong to five categories: proteases, skin/mucus structural proteins, steroid hormone signaling, tyrosine/dopamine metabolism and lipid metabolism. The down-regulated markers are either blood markers or lectin-related genes. In conclusion, pectoral fin transcriptomes are a rich source of indicator markers for monitoring hormone induced sexual maturation of female European eels. In addition, these markers provide important new insight into several fundamental processes in eel biology.

Abstract
This study investigated growth, condition and development of American eels Anguilla rostrata that were introduced into a European river to estimate their competitive potential in a non-native habitat. Results demonstrate that A. rostrata develops normally in European waters and successfully competes with the native European eel Anguilla anguilla. In addition, A. rostrata appears to be more susceptible to the Asian swimbladder nematode Anguillicola crassus than A. anguilla and could support the further propagation of this parasite. Detected differences in fat content and gonad mass between Anguilla species are assumed to reflect species-specific adaptations to spawning migration distances. This study indicates that A. rostrata is a potential competitor for the native fauna in European fresh waters and suggests strict import regulations to prevent additional pressure on A. anguilla and a potential further deterioration of its stock situation.

Abstract
Because parasitism is among the reasons invoked to explain the collapse of Anguilla anguilla, we evaluated the parasitic constraint on body condition (BC) of migrant silver eels as a proxy of fitness with inter-site comparisons. Metazoan parasites were studied in 149 silver eels from five sites (northern Europe). In total, 89% were infected by 13 species including Myxozoa, Monogenea, Cestoda, Nematoda, and Acanthocephala. Anguillicoloides crassus was most common (56%), then Acanthocephalus clavula (30%), and Pseudodactylogyrus sp. (17%). BC, calculated for 58 females, was negatively correlated by abundance of the introduced Pseudodactylogyrus sp. but not by other parasite taxa. Nevertheless, the introduced A. crassus was considered as a severe pathogen based on previous data, whereas the native A. clavula was supposed to have limited impact. Parasite component communities and BC were different between sites. Silver eels from Stockholm Archipelago (Sweden) were the least parasitized (40% vs. 90-95% for other sites) with no parasites on the gills. Burrishoole (Ireland) differed by the absence of A. crassus and high prevalence of A. clavula (84%) but without consequences on BC. Gudenaa (Denmark), Corrib (Ireland), and Frémur (France) were close due to high prevalence of A. crassus (89-93%). Gudenaa and Corrib were the most similar because Pseudodactylogyrus sp. was also highly prevalent (respectively 71% and 60%) whereas absent in Frémur. Our results suggest that the fitness loss induced by the introduced parasites could affect the spawning success of migrant silver eels from Gudenaa and Corrib, and to a lesser extent from Frémur, but probably not those from Stockholm Archipelago and Burrishoole.

Abstract
To assess the relationship between growth rate of body mass and sex in the Japanese eel Anguilla japonica in the early life stage; the growth rates of males and females were compared under experimental conditions. The mean growth rate of females was significantly slower than that of males. To assess the relative priority of growth rate and sex, growth was delayed by restricted feeding, resulting in a significantly higher proportion of females in the delayed than in the normal growth group. These findings indicate that the mean growth rate of A. japonica is slower in females than in males in the early life stage around sex determination and differentiation under experimental rearing conditions. Moreover, growth rate probably has priority over sex determination, with slow growth rate increasing the probability of being female.

Abstract
The age, total length (L(T)), head shape and skull shape were investigated for 379 Japanese eels Anguilla japonica sampled in freshwater and brackish areas of the Kojima Bay-Asahi River system, Okayama, Japan, to learn about the differentiation process of head-shape polymorphism. The relative mouth width (ratio of mouth width to L(T)) of A. japonica > 400 mm L(T) collected in fresh water was significantly greater than that of fish collected in brackish water. Growth rates of mouth width and the distance from the snout to the midpoint of the eyes (the ratio of width and distance to age, respectively) were not significantly different between freshwater and brackish-water samples, whereas the somatic growth rate (the ratio of L(T) to age) of freshwater samples was significantly lower than that of brackish-water eel samples. These results suggest that the factors affecting head and somatic growth of A. japonica are not identical. According to these results and feeding patterns in each habitat reported by another study, it is suggested that somatic growth appears to play a significant role in the differentiation process of the head-shape polymorphism in A. japonica, with the slow-growing fish in fresh water becoming broad-headed and the fast-growing fish in brackish water becoming narrow-headed.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to determine the efficacy of dietary administration of Lactobacillus pentosus PL11 on growth performance and the immune and antioxidant systems in Japanese eel Anguilla japonica challenged with Edwardsiella tarda. A total of 75 Japanese eels (24.63±0.83 g) were grouped into 5 treatment diets which were a control diet (C) without E. tarda and 4 treatment diets with E. tarda challenge, including C for E. tarda challenge (NC), C plus L. pentosus PL11 supplemented diet (10⁸ cfu g⁻¹) (T-PL11), C plus L. pentosus KCCM 40997 supplemented diet (10⁸ cfu g⁻¹) (T-Lp) and C plus Weissella hellenica DS-12 supplemented diet (10⁸ cfu g⁻¹) (T-Wh) for 5 weeks (4 week before and 1 week after challenge). The results showed enhanced growth performance in fish fed the diet containing L. pentosus PL11 compared to others. The growth performance parameters including specific growth rate (SGR) and weight gain (WG), feed intake (FI), feed conversion ratio (FCR) and survival were significantly (P<0.05) higher in fish maintained on L. pentosus PL11 supplemented diet compared to C and NC. T-PL11 group also shows a significant increase in the levels of plasma immunoglobulin M, CAT and SOD activities compared to NC. Hematological parameters and mieloperoxidase were significantly better in fish fed the L. pentosus PL11 supplemented diet than in the control. L. pentosus PL11 supplementation recover the reduced expression of SOD, CAT and heat shock protein 70 genes in liver and intestine in pathogen challenged fishes. In conclusion the result of the current study demonstrated L. pentosus PL11 potential as an alternative to antibiotic supplementation to improve the growth and health performance of Japanese eel (A. japonica).

Abstract
This study evaluated the effects of surgically implanted passive integrated transponder (PIT) tags on growth rate, survival and tag retention of yellow shortfin eels Anguilla australis with an initial mean mass of 101 g. There were no significant differences in body mass, total length, specific growth rate and survival between tagged and untagged A. australis in a 108 day laboratory trial. This tagging method was very reliable, with a tag retention of >95%.

Abstract
In mammals, androgens appear to enhance the development of primary ovarian follicles, but PI3K (phosphoinositide 3-kinases) pathway is well recognized as one of the critical pathways in early follicular development. Roles of the PI3K were revealed by deletion of PTEN (phosphatase and tensin homolog on chromosome 10). PTEN is demonstrated to play an important role in the early stage of follicle development. In the Japanese eel, two forms of PTEN have been cloned, but what their functions on the development of early ovarian follicles are still not clear. The natural blockage and inducible of ovarian development was a benefit to address this question in the eel. Testosterone (T) shows to ameliorate the early ovarian development in the eel. The aims of this study were to elucidate the two forms of PTEN by cellular and physiological criteria and to study the effects of T on the ovarian PTEN production in the exogenous pituitary extracts-stimulated eel. Our results suggested that two forms of PTEN are existing in the Japanese eel, and eel ovarian development corresponded to the decrease in ovarian PTEN expression, vice versa. In addition, the supplement of T on eel early ovarian development can be attributed to its PTEN inhibitor role.

Abstract
The present study aimed in vivo tracking of maturation of male eel by computed tomography (CT). Additionally, individually monitored testes sizes were correlated with the conventionally used external maturity indicators (i.e. eye and nose indexes) in order to test and improve their usefulness at individual level. Testes could be clearly identified with the CT from the end of the third week of hCG administration routinely used to induce maturation in fish. The volume of testes increased exponentially during hormone treatment, and by the end of the sixth week of maturation procedure all males produced motilable spermatozoa. Present results prove that testes size can noninvasively be monitored with CT from maturity level where testes size rich 3000 mm3 volume. Eye and nose indexes are in close correlation with testes volume and thus can also be effectively used to monitor maturity level of male eel, but preferably only at stock level. However, due to their high individual variability, these indexes can be applied only with caution at individual level and should be supplemented with other noninvasive techniques such as CT.

Abstract
Both theoretical and experimental studies have shown that fishing mortality can induce adaptive responses in body growth rates of fishes in the opposite direction of natural selection. We compared body growth rates in European eel (Anguilla anguilla) from three Mediterranean stocks subject to different fishing pressure. Results are consistent with the hypotheses that i) fast-growing individuals are more likely to survive until sexual maturity than slow-growing ones under natural conditions (no fishing) and ii) fishing can select for slow-growing individuals by removing fast-growing ones. Although the possibility of human-induced evolution seems remote for a panmictic species like such as the European eel, further research is desirable to assess the implications of the intensive exploitation on this critically endangered fish.

Abstract
Anguilla japonica adults with a snout-vent length of (25.91 +/- 3.26) cm were randomly sampled from the ponds of monoculture A. japonica (M1) and polyculture A. japonica and Macrobrachium nipponense (M2) and the proliferation site in reservoir (M3) to compare the morphological and quality indices of the adults under the three aquaculture models. Discriminant analysis, cluster analysis, and factor analysis were applied to reveal the differences among the individuals of these three cultured populations. Among the test 21 biological traits and 23 morphological and quality indices, there were significant differences in 15 biological traits and 14 morphological and quality indices between M1 and M2, 19 and 18 between M1 and M3, and 11 and 8 between M2 and M3, respectively. The Euclidean distance between M1 and M2, M1 and M3, and M2 and M3 was 1.433, 3. 516, and 2. 167, respectively, and the differences were significant. The accumulative variance percentage of the first five principal components was 82.1%, and the eigenvalues of these components were all larger than 1. The principal components 1 and 2 could be regarded as fatness factor and movement factor, the other three principal components could be regarded as well-being factor, and the three populations could be clearly separated each other by principal component 1. In discriminant analysis, the five principal components, i. e., body width / anal length, body length / anal length, net volume coefficient, swim bladder coefficient, and liver coefficient, were served as independent variables to establish discriminant functions of the populations, which could clearly distinguish the populations, with the discriminant accuracy and synthetic discriminant accuracy being 100%.

Abstract
In order to examine the ecological risk for organic pollutants in diadromous fish migrating between sea and freshwater, organochlorine compounds (OCs) were determined in the catadromous eel Anguilla japonica having marine, estuarine and freshwater residence life histories. The eels were collected in Japanese coastal areas. We also compared the OCs accumulation with the marine eel Conger myriaster, which has a similar life history as A. japonica in the marine environment. The ontogenic changes in the otolith strontium (Sr) and calcium (Ca) concentrations were examined along the life history transect to discriminate the migration type. There were generally three different patterns, which were categorized as 'marine residence' (spent most of their life in the sea and did not enter freshwater), 'estuarine residence' (inhabited estuaries or switched between different habitats), and 'freshwater residence' (entered and remained in freshwater river habitats after arrival in the estuary) according to the otolith Sr:Ca ratio. There were generally no correlations between OCs such as Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethanes (DDTs), Hexachlorobenzene (HCB), Hexachlorocyclohexanes (HCHs) and Chlordanes (CHLs) accumulation and each biological characteristic such as TL, BW and age in A. japonica. A positive correlation between the lipid content and concentrations of OCs were found. Additionally, the concentrations of HCB, ∑HCHs, ∑CHLs and ∑DDTs in A. japonica were significantly higher than those of C. myriaster, associating with the higher lipid contents (14% on average) in the former than the latter eels (9% on average). A negative linear relationship was found between the otolith Sr:Ca ratios and concentration of each OCs in A. japonica. The ecological risk of OCs increase as the freshwater residence period in the eel becomes longer. It is clear that migratory histories and lipid contents directly affected OCs accumulation in the anguillid eels.

Abstract
Pepsinogen is the precursor form of the gastric-specific digestive enzyme, pepsin. Ghrelin is a representative gastric hormone with multiple functions in vertebrates, including the regulation of growth hormone release, stimulation of food intake and gastrointestinal motility function. We investigated chronological changes in the distribution of pepsinogen-expressing cells by in situ hybridization and ghrelin-immunoreactive cells by immunohistochemistry in the Japanese eel (Anguilla japonica) during metamorphosis from the leptocephalus sage to the elver stage. The ghrelin-producing cells first appeared in the gastric cecum and pyloric portion of the stomach in the late phase of metamorphosing leptocephali, whereas the pepsinogen-producing cells were first detected in the early phase of the glass-eel stage. These suggest that endocrine cells differentiated earlier than exocrine cells in the eel stomach. Accompanying eel development, the distribution of ghrelin-producing cells spread to the esophagus and other regions of the stomach, but not to the intestine. These results may be related to the changes in dietary habits during metamorphosis in the Japanese eel.

Abstract
The onset of downstream migration of European eels is accompanied by a cessation of feeding and the start of sexual maturation which stresses the link between metabolism and sexual maturation, also suggesting an important role for exercise. Exercise has been tested with eels in swim tunnels and was found to stimulate the onset of sexual maturation. In this study, we have investigated the interplay between migration and maturation in the field during the downstream migration of female silver eels. Temporal changes in migratory status and sexual maturation among silver eels of the upstream Rhine River system over 3 months of the migration season (August, September and October) were determined in biometrical parameters, plasma 17β-estradiol and calcium levels, oocyte histology and gonadal fat levels. Furthermore, the ecological relevant parameters age as determined by otolithometry and health aspects indicated by haematocrit, haemoglobin and swim-bladder parasite load were measured. Silver eels were estimated to be 14 years old. A strong temporal progression in migratory stage was shown over the months of downstream migration. Catches probably represented a mix of reproductive migrants and feeding migrants of which the ratio increased over time. Furthermore, this study confirmed our hypothesis linking the migratory stage to early maturation as indicated by enlargement of the eyes, oocyte growth and fat deposition in the oocytes, exactly the same changes as found induced by exercise but not ruling out environmental influences. Migrants show extensive fat uptake by the oocytes, probably stimulated by the swimming exercise. In addition, at least 83% of the silver eels in this spawning run may have suffered from negative effects of swim-bladder parasites on their swimming performance.

Abstract
The effects of prolonged feed deprivation (40 days at 18° C) and re-feeding (30 days) on body mass, growth and the activity of selected pancreatic and intestinal enzymes were evaluated in migrating European glass eels Anguilla anguilla by comparison with a control group fed to satiation with hake Merluccius merluccius roe for the duration of the experiment. Feed deprivation resulted in mass loss and a reduction in digestive function, as revealed by a decrease in the total and specific activities of pancreatic (trypsin and α-amylase) and intestinal brush border (alkaline phosphatase and leucine aminopeptidase) enzymes. The total activity of intestinal brush border enzymes diminished after 5 days of feed deprivation, whereas that of pancreatic enzymes did not decrease until 10 days, indicating that the intestine is more sensitive to feed deprivation than the pancreas. Re-feeding A. anguilla that were starved for 40 days resulted in compensatory growth, with specific growth rates that were 2·6 times higher than the control group. This compensatory growth was associated with the recovery of trypsin and intestinal brush border enzyme activities, which were restored to control levels within 5 days of re-feeding. The ability to maintain pancreatic enzyme activity during 40 days of feed deprivation, and rapidly recover capacity for protein digestion upon re-feeding, would enable A. anguilla at this glass eel stage to withstand periods without food but rapidly provide amino acids for protein synthesis and growth when suitable food was available.

Abstract
This study compares two alternative indices for quantifying the gross pathology of the swimbladder of eels, Anguilla anguilla (L.), infected with the nematode Anguillicoloides crassus. Two observers recorded twice the scores obtained by the two indices on the same set of 71 wild caught eels (from elver to silver eels, French Mediterranean lagoons). The Length Ratio Index (LRI), performed better than the Swimbladder Degenerative Index (SDI), in three of four predefined criteria of decision. First, the LRI better correlated with an estimate of the swimbladder volume reduction, a functional consequence of the infection (representativeness). Also, the LRI was less prone to subjectivity (inter-observer variability) and more precise (intra-observer variability), although less easy to generate (time needed for measurement/assessment). Using a sub-sample of 32 unaffected eels (showing minor if any swimbladder damage and no living worms at autopsy), we ascertained a linear relationship between the swimbladder length and the total body length, a prerequisite of isometric growth, to definitively accept the new ratio index as a valid alternative to the SDI. Also, because the LRI can be recorded on live specimens with radio-imagery (non-invasive method), we recommend its use, and provide a graph of correspondence between the SDI scores, the LRI scores and the estimated proportion of gas loss in the swimbladder.

Abstract
In order to elucidate how androgens may mediate their effects on ovarian growth, we investigated the mRNA levels of two subtypes of androgen receptor (ara and arb) in the ovary of feminized Japanese eel (Anguilla japonica) during artificially induced ovarian development by quantitative real-time reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction and in situ hybridization. Ara mRNA levels were high from the late oil droplet stage to the late vitellogenic stage, whereas arb mRNA levels were high from the late oil droplet stage to the midvitellogenic stage. Both ar mRNAs were predominantly observed in the follicle cells and the epithelial cells of the ovigerous lamellae in all stages. In the oil droplet stage, oogonia exhibited intense signals for ar mRNAs. There was no obvious difference in localization pattern between ara and arb in all ovaries examined, irrespective of maturational stage. It was difficult to identify the follicle cell types that were positive for ar mRNA during ovarian development. Only in post-ovulatory follicles could theca and granulosa cells be clearly identified, and ar signals were observed in both layers. The predominant localization of ar mRNA in the follicle cells suggests that androgens play important roles in oocyte growth by acting on these cells in this species. We have shown the expression profile and localization of ar mRNA during ovarian development for the first time in an oviparous vertebrate.

Abstract
Information theory was applied to select the best model fitting total length (L(T))-at-age data and calculate the averaged model for Japanese eel Anguilla japonica compiled from published literature and the differences in growth between sexes were examined. Five candidate growth models were the von Bertalanffy, generalized von Bertalanffy, Gompertz, logistic and power models. The von Bertalanffy growth model with sex-specific coefficients was best supported by the data and nearly overlapped the averaged growth model based on Akaike weights, indicating a similar fit to the data. The Gompertz, generalized von Bertalanffy and power growth models were also substantially supported by the data. The L(T) at age of A. japonica were larger in females than in males according to the averaged growth mode, suggesting a sexual dimorphism in growth. Model inferences based on information theory, which deal with uncertainty in model selection and robust parameter estimates, are recommended for modelling the growth of A. japonica.

Abstract
In this study, growth patterns were monitored in controlled fresh and brackish water (BW) conditions for 7 months during Anguilla rostrata glass eel and elver stages. Null hypotheses tested were that there is no significant difference in growth between glass eels (1) collected from two geographic regions typified by different sex ratios, (2) reared in fresh and BW and (3) due to origin x salinity interactions. It was found that young A. rostrata from Mira River (MR, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Canada, an area where both males and females occur) grew faster than those from Grande-Rivière-Blanche (Québec, Canada, an area where population are highly skewed towards females; 99-100%). Anguilla rostrata from both origins also grew faster in BW, although there was a trend for origin x salinity interactions whereby this effect was more pronounced for fish from the MR. The results support the hypothesis that salinity can influence growth patterns, as possibly can quantitative genetic differences between A. rostrata glass eels from different origins. Possible explanations for these patterns and potential consequences for sex determination and translocation programmes are discussed.

Abstract
The influences of water temperature and feeding regime on otolith growth in Anguilla japonica glass eels and elvers were investigated using individuals reared at 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 degrees C and in fed or unfed conditions at salinity 32 after their otoliths were marked with alizarin complexone (ALC). To eliminate the difficulty of observing the edges of otoliths with optical (OM) or scanning electron (SEM) microscopes, three to 10 individuals were sampled from each tank at 10, 20 and 30 days during the experiment and reared for an additional 10 days at 25 degrees C after their otoliths were marked a second time. Otolith growth and the number of increments were measured using both OM and SEM. Most A. japonica commenced feeding after 10 days at 20-30 degrees C or after 20 days at 15 degrees C, but no feeding occurred at 5 and 10 degrees C. No otolith growth occurred at 5 and 10 degrees C except in two individuals with minimal increment deposition at 10 degrees C. Otolith growth was proportional to water temperature within 15-25 degrees C and not different between 25 and 30 degrees C. At 15, 25 and 30 degrees C, the mean otolith growth rate in fed conditions was higher than in unfed conditions. The number of increments per day was significantly different among water temperatures (0.00-0.01 day(-1) at 5 and 10 degrees C, 0.43-0.48 day(-1) at 15 degrees C and 0.94-1.07 day(-1) at 20-30 degrees C). These results indicated that otolith growth in A. japonica glass eels and elvers was affected by temperature and ceased at < or =10 degrees C under experimental conditions. Hence, future studies analysing the otoliths of wild-caught A. japonica glass eels and elvers need to carefully consider the water temperatures potentially experienced by the juveniles in the wild.

Abstract
The spawning area location and the larval migration characteristics of Anguilla mossambica were studied through the examination of early life-history traits (ELHT) inferred from otolith microstructural analyses of 122 glass A. mossambica collected along the eastern coast of Madagascar, in the south-western Indian Ocean. Backcalculated hatching dates of leptocephali that recruited between November 2005 and February 2006 suggested that spawning was continuous from June to November 2005, although individual migration duration periods were variable. Larvae that exhibited the highest daily otolith growth rates had the shortest leptocephalus durations and total length (L(T)) at recruitment, possibly because they reached the competence to metamorphose more rapidly and to recruit to fresh waters. Migration durations and L(T) increased from north to south on the Malagasy eastern coast, supporting earlier suggestions that A. mossambica spawns north-east of Madagascar, west of the Mascarene Ridge in the Indian Ocean.

Abstract
The fine scale morphological and genetic dynamics of successive waves of Anguilla anguilla glass eel recruitment was studied over a 2 year period at a southern European Mediterranean location (Camargue, France) with continuous recruitment. Using morphometric [total length (L(T)), mass (M), condition (K) and pigmentation stage] as well as genetic (allozyme) markers, the aim was to test for the existence of temporally separated spawning groups and explore the relation between genetic variability and morphological heterogeneity of recruits. The results showed that L(T), M and K varied over time, being highest from the end of summer to winter (peaking in December) and lowest in spring (lowest in April). The pigmentation stages within monthly samples were highly diverse with a heterogeneous seasonal pattern. Allozyme data showed high genetic variability values within samples, but low genetic differentiation among samples (F(ST) = 0.003, P < 0.05). Pairwise comparisons between samples indicated a positive correlation between genetic differentiation and difference in recruitment time (days), with a marked increase in genetic differentiation around 250 days between monthly recruitment samples. Furthermore, genetic diversity increased with the number of pigmentation stages per sample and was negatively correlated with the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) index during the putative year of trans-oceanic migration. No correlation, however, was found between the level of multilocus heterozygosity (MLH) and growth variables. A situation of genetic patchiness with fluctuating parental contribution can thus best explain the patterns observed, although the existence of two separate spawning periods cannot be excluded. More discriminatory and sensitive genetic markers, such as (neutral and adaptive) microsatellites, could probably provide additional insights into the most probable hypothesis explaining the population structure and recruitment heterogeneity of A. anguilla.

Abstract
Three cDNA sequences encoding the gonadotropin subunits, common glycoprotein alpha subunit (GTHalpha), FSHbeta and LHbeta subunits were isolated from marbled eel. The cDNA of GTHalpha encodes 116 amino acids with a signal peptide of 24 amino acids and a mature peptide of 92 amino acids. The FSHbeta subunit consists of 127 amino acids with a 22 amino acid signal peptide and a 105 amino acid mature peptide, while the LHbeta subunit consists of 140 amino acids with a 24 amino acid signal peptide and a 116 amino acid mature peptide. Comparison of the deduced amino acid sequences of marbled eel GTHalpha, FSHbeta, and LHbeta with that of other fishes shows a high degree of conservation in the number of cysteine residues and potential N-linked glycosylation sites. The mRNA of GTHalpha, FSHbeta and LHbeta were not only detected in pituitary, but also in ovary and testes by RT-PCR. Quantitative realtime PCR analysis revealed that the GTHalpha and LHbeta transcriptional levels in pituitaries of female and male eels gradually increased during the artificially inducing gonadal development, and peaked at late vitellogenic stage and spermiation stage, respectively. FSHbeta mRNA in the pituitaries of female eels maintained a high level at previtellogenic stage, early vitellogenic stage as well as mid-vitellogenic stage but declined sharply at late vitellogenic stage and migratory nucleus stage. In male eels, the mRNA levels of FSHbeta in the pituitaries were higher at early spermatogenesis stage than at both late spermatogenesis stage and spermiation stage. These results suggested that FSH would be in control of initiation and maintenance of gonadal growth and gametogenesis, whereas LH would be involved in the final gonadal maturation and spermiation/ovulation in the tropic eel Anguilla marmorata.

Abstract
Temperate-zone anguillid eels use both saline (marine or brackish) and fresh waters during their continental phase, but use of fresh waters is paradoxical because on average these fishes grow more rapidly in saline than in fresh waters. Based on data from anguillid eels whose habitat-residency histories had been determined by Sr:Ca otolithometry, superiority of growth rates in saline water is much greater in American eels Anguilla rostrata in north-eastern North America (mean saline:fresh growth rate ratio 2.07) than in European Anguilla anguilla, Japanese Anguilla japonica and shortfinned Anguilla australis eels (range of mean ratios 1.12-1.14). Data from A. rostrata in the Hudson Estuary, U.S.A., and Prince Edward Island, Canada, were used to test adaptive explanations of catadromous migrations. The hypothesis that lower mortality in fresh water offsets faster growth in saline water was not supported because loss (mortality + emigration ) rates did not vary between saline and fresh zones of the Hudson Estuary. Hypotheses that anguillid eels move to fresh water to escape from larger anguillid eels in saline water or to evaluate habitat quality were not supported by size and age distributions. Catadromy in temperate-zone anguillid eels increases the diversity of occupied habitats and therefore lowers fitness variance caused by environmental fluctuations. Catadromy in temperate-zone anguillid eels could be due to natural selection for maximum geometric mean fitness which is sensitive to fitness variance. Temperate-zone catadromy might also be maladaptive, at least in local areas, due to shifts over time in selective pressures or to inability of panmictic genetic systems to adapt to local conditions.

Abstract
The aims of the present study were to compare the health status of yellow eels (Anguilla anguilla) developing in three estuaries of the NW Portuguese coast with different levels of pollution and their physiological responses to combined effects of environmental variation and pollution. For this, a field study was performed using a multi-parameter approach, including eels condition indexes and biomarkers, water quality variables and other environmental factors. Sixteen biological parameters were assessed, namely: hepatosomatic index (LSI), Fulton's condition index (K), lipid peroxidation (LPO), total glutathione (TG), reduced glutathione (GSH), oxidised glutathione (GSSG), GSH/GSSG, and the activity of the enzymes acetylcholinesterase (AChE), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), sodium-potassium ATPase (Na(+)/K(+)-ATPase), ethoxyresorufin O-deethylase (EROD), glutathione S-transferases (GST), catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and glutathione reductase (GR). Ten environmental factors were also measured in water: temperature, salinity, pH, phosphates, nitrates, nitrites, ammonium, silica, phenol and hardness. Globally, the biomarkers indicate exposure and toxic effects of pollutants on eels living in contaminated estuaries. The relationships between biological and environmental variables were assessed through redundancy analysis. K and LSI indexes, AChE and Na(+)/K(+)-ATPase, total glutathione levels and the antioxidant enzymes CAT, GR, and SOD where the factors most discriminating reference (Minho River estuary) from contaminated estuaries (Lima and Douro Rivers estuaries). Moreover, the most striking outcomes of pollutants exposure on biological responses were observed during winter, probably due to a joint effect of cold weather and pollution stress. Altogether, the results indicate that the development of eels in the polluted estuaries of Lima and Douro rivers is interfering with physiological functions determinant for their survival and performance. This may increase the mortality rates during the continental life-phase of the species and decrease the percentage of animals able to successfully complete their oceanic migration and, thus, reduce the contribution of each generation to the next one.

Abstract
The special process and special structure which bring organelle during the spermiogenesis of Japanese eel, Anguilla japonica were observed by scanning electron microscope and transmission electron microscope. The process which spermatoblast became sperm including four special stages, the early stage, the middle stage, the later stage and the spermic stage, then came into being a normal mature sperm. In the early stage, cell nucleus became long form gradually by the oval form. In one side of the cell nucleus, there was a big and special globoid structure dyeing lower, account for 1/3 of cell nucleus cubage. It contains a little of deep dyeing grain form and the lines form material, the outside is wrapped by plasmalemma separated with the cell nucleus, the outside of that structure and cell nucleus still lay a plasmalemma. The spermiogenesis of early stage did not form independent centriolar complex and mitochondria. In the middle stage, the cell nucleus presented a long form with the globoid structure on the top of the nucleus, and the down side had no globoid structure where the flagellum primordium appears. The globoid structure changed with the spermiogenesis. The inner part of the globoid differentiated a centriolar complex and mitochondria step by step. The lysosomes distributed in the medium segment of the cell nucleus obviously. In the late stage, the cell nucleus was similar with the shape of eyebrow or crescent. The centriolar complex released from the globoid structure, then became an independent structure. There were mitochondria which had not become the independent structure still in the globoid structure. Under the karyon, there was flagellum primordium where sent a rather long flagellum. The flagellum formed a typical "9+0" microtubular structure at that time. The spermatozoa in this phase has movable ability. In the spermic stage, the cell nucleus was round in shape. The centriolar complex was inside implantation fossa. Mitochondria were under karyon. And under the mitochondria was the central space of the sleeve. The flagellum formed a typical "9+2" microtubular structure at that time. The spermatozoa of Japanese eel, A. japonica became complete mature spermatozoa must pass through four phases for abnormality.

Abstract
Using a longline survey, a total of 196 European eels Anguilla anguilla were collected at different depths in Lough Ennell (maximum depth 30 m), central Ireland. The catch per unit of effort of A. anguilla that were caught from 1 to 25 m depths was lowest at 0.5-5.0 m and greatest at the deepest depth range (22.5-25.0 m). Sub-samples of A. anguilla from depths of <15 m showed little or no difference in size, sex ratio, age, growth rate, condition factor, length-mass relationship, gonado-somatic index, fin index or eye index with fish from depths of >15 m. All fish examined were female yellow-phase A. anguilla that had ages from 7 to 20 years (mean +/-s.d. = 10.3 +/- 2.9 years), with growth rates from 24.0-60.8 mm year(-1) (mean +/-s.d. = 40.7 +/- 8.5 mm year(-1)). Variations in the growth rates were greater in the shallow group than that of the deep group. This study suggested that deeper regions are important feeding habitats for A. anguilla and that fish in this lake were growing moderately fast compared to similar habitats and areas in the species' range.
