Abstract
Establishing the appropriate theoretical framework for unconventional superconductivity in the iron-based materials requires correct understanding of both the electron correlation strength and the role of Fermi surfaces. This fundamental issue becomes especially relevant with the discovery of the iron chalcogenide superconductors. Here, we use angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to measure three representative iron chalcogenides, FeTe0.56Se0.44, monolayer FeSe grown on SrTiO3 and K0.76Fe1.72Se2. We show that these superconductors are all strongly correlated, with an orbital-selective strong renormalization in the dxy bands despite having drastically different Fermi surface topologies. Furthermore, raising temperature brings all three compounds from a metallic state to a phase where the dxy orbital loses all spectral weight while other orbitals remain itinerant. These observations establish that iron chalcogenides display universal orbital-selective strong correlations that are insensitive to the Fermi surface topology, and are close to an orbital-selective Mott phase, hence placing strong constraints for theoretical understanding of iron-based superconductors. A proper theoretical description for unconventional superconductivity in iron-based compounds remains elusive. Here, the authors, to capture the electron correlation strength and the role of Fermi surfaces, report ARPES measurements of three iron chalcogenide superconductors to establish universal features.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A pulmonary tumor is occasionally detected on a chest computed tomography (CT) scan before cardiovascular surgery. PURPOSE In this study, we examined clinical courses of patients who had undergone the simultaneous resection of a pulmonary tumor following cardiovascular surgery. METHODS From 2008 to 2013, 18 patients (13 men and 5 women) with a median age of 69.8 years underwent the wedge pulmonary resection for a lung tumor through a median thoracotomy following cardiovascular surgery in our hospital. Cardiovascular surgeries consisted of off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) in six patients, aortic valve replacement and/or mitral valve plasty in 10 patients, total arch replacement in 10 patients and descending aorta replacement in 10 patients. RESULTS No complications associated with pulmonary resections were observed. Pathological examination revealed that 15 patients (83.3%) were diagnosed with lung cancers including 13 adenocarcinomas and two squamous cell carcinomas, with the clinical stages of 1A in 13 patients, 2A in one patient and 2B in one patient. Among them, five patients received the radical pulmonary resection subsequently, whereas 10 patients were unable to receive it due to their poor cardiopulmonary function. Kaplan-Meier analysis of patients with lung cancer revealed that the 5-year survival rate and progression-free survival (PFS) rate after 3 years from the surgery were 46.2% and 73.8%, respectively. CONCLUSION The simultaneous resection of pulmonary tumor following cardiovascular surgery is safely performed, and is useful for the pathological diagnosis of the tumor. Further studies are warranted, however, this procedure may contribute to controlling the progression of lung cancer in patients with cardiovascular disease with comorbidities.

Abstract
Nanoparticles (NPs) are currently the focus of considerable attention for dental applications; however, their biological effects have not been fully elucidated. The long-term, slow release of matrix metalloproteases (MMPs) digests collagen fibrils within resin-dentin bonds. Therefore, MMP inhibitors can prolong the durability of resin-dentin bonds. However, there have been few reports evaluating the combined effect of MMP inhibition and the cytotoxic effects of NPs for dentin bonding. The aim of this study was to evaluate MMP inhibition and cytotoxic responses to gold (AuNPs) and platinum nanoparticles (PtNPs) stabilized by polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) in cultured murine macrophages (RAW264) by using MMP inhibition assays, measuring cell viability and inflammatory responses (quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction [RT-qPCR]), and conducting a micromorphological analysis by fluorescence and transmission electron microscopy. Cultured RAW264 cells were exposed to metal NPs at various concentrations (1, 10, 100, and 400 µg/mL). AuNPs and PtNPs markedly inhibited MMP-8 and MMP-9 activity. Although PtNPs were cytotoxic at high concentrations (100 and 400 µg/mL), no cytotoxic effects were observed for AuNPs at any concentration. Transmission electron microscopy images showed a significant nonrandom intercellular distribution for AuNPs and PtNPs, which were mostly observed to be localized in lysosomes but not in the nucleus. RT-qPCR analysis demonstrated inflammatory responses were not induced in RAW264 cells by AuNPs or PtNPs. The cytotoxicity of nanoparticles might depend on the core metal composition and arise from a “Trojan horse” effect; thus, MMP inhibition could be attributed to the surface charge of PVP, which forms the outer coating of NPs. The negative charge of the surface coating of PVP binds to Zn2+ from the active center of MMPs by chelate binding and results in MMP inhibition. In summary, AuNPs are attractive NPs that effectively inhibit MMP activity without cytotoxicity or inflammatory responses.

Abstract
Negative compressibility is a sign of thermodynamic instability of open or non-equilibrium systems. In quantum materials consisting of multiple mutually coupled subsystems, the compressibility of one subsystem can be negative if it is countered by positive compressibility of the others. Manifestations of this effect have so far been limited to low-dimensional dilute electron systems. Here, we present evidence from angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) for negative electronic compressibility (NEC) in the quasi-three-dimensional (3D) spin-orbit correlated metal (Sr1-xLax)3Ir2O7. Increased electron filling accompanies an anomalous decrease of the chemical potential, as indicated by the overall movement of the deep valence bands. Such anomaly, suggestive of NEC, is shown to be primarily driven by the lowering in energy of the conduction band as the correlated bandgap reduces. Our finding points to a distinct pathway towards an uncharted territory of NEC featuring bulk correlated metals with unique potential for applications in low-power nanoelectronics and novel metamaterials.

Abstract
Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) mobilizes peripheral blood stem cells (PBSCs) derived from bone marrow. We hypothesized that intraspinal transplantation of PBSCs mobilized by G-CSF could promote functional recovery after spinal cord injury. Spinal cords of adult nonobese diabetes/severe immunodeficiency mice were injured using an Infinite Horizon impactor (60 kdyn). One week after the injury, 3.0 µl of G-CSF-mobilized human mononuclear cells (MNCs; 0.5 × 10(5)/µl), G-CSF-mobilized human CD34-positive PBSCs (CD34; 0.5 × 10(5)/µl), or normal saline was injected to the lesion epicenter. We performed immunohistochemistry. Locomotor recovery was assessed by Basso Mouse Scale. The number of transplanted human cells decreased according to the time course. The CD31-positive area was significantly larger in the MNC and CD34 groups compared with the vehicle group. The number of serotonin-positive fibers was significantly larger in the MNC and CD34 groups than in the vehicle group. Immunohistochemistry revealed that the number of apoptotic oligodendrocytes was significantly smaller in cell-transplanted groups, and the areas of demyelination in the MNC- and CD34-transplanted mice were smaller than that in the vehicle group, indicating that cell transplantation suppressed oligodendrocyte apoptosis and demyelination. Both the MNC and CD34 groups showed significantly better hindlimb functional recovery compared with the vehicle group. There was no significant difference between the two types of transplanted cells. Intraspinal transplantation of G-CSF-mobilized MNCs or CD34-positive cells promoted angiogenesis, serotonergic fiber regeneration/sparing, and preservation of myelin, resulting in improved hindlimb function after spinal cord injury in comparison with vehicle-treated control mice. Transplantation of G-CSF-mobilized PBSCs has advantages for treatment of spinal cord injury in the ethical and immunological viewpoints, although further exploration is needed to move forward to clinical application.

Abstract
FMN riboswitches are genetic elements that, in many bacteria, control genes responsible for biosynthesis and/or transport of riboflavin (vitamin B2 ). We report that the Escherichia coli ribB FMN riboswitch controls expression of the essential gene ribB coding for the riboflavin biosynthetic enzyme 3,4-dihydroxy-2-butanone-4-phosphate synthase (RibB; EC 4.1.99.12). Our data show that the E. coli ribB FMN riboswitch is unusual because it operates at the transcriptional and also at the translational level. Expression of ribB is negatively affected by FMN and by the FMN analog roseoflavin mononucleotide, which is synthesized enzymatically from roseoflavin and ATP. Consequently, in addition to flavoenzymes, the E. coli ribB FMN riboswitch constitutes a target for the antibiotic roseoflavin produced by Streptomyces davawensis.

Abstract
We report findings of strong anomalies in both mutual inductance and inelastic Raman spectroscopy measurements of single-unit-cell FeSe film grown on Nb-doped SrTiO3, which occur near the temperature where the superconductinglike energy gap opens. Analysis suggests that the anomaly is associated with a broadened ferroelectric transition in a thin layer near the FeSe/SrTiO3 interface. The coincidence of the ferroelectric transition and gap-opening temperatures adds credence to the central role played by the film-substrate interaction on the strong Cooper pairing in this system. We discuss scenarios that could explain such a coincidence.

Abstract
Biogenesis of ribosomes is a complex process mediated by many factors. While its transcription proceeds, ribosomal RNA (rRNA) folds itself into a characteristic three-dimensional structure through interaction with ribosomal proteins, during which its ends are processed. Here, we show that the essential protein YqgF, a RuvC family protein with an RNase-H-like motif, is involved in the processing of pre-16S rRNA during ribosome maturation. Indeed, pre-16S rRNA accumulated in cells of a temperature-sensitive yqgF mutant (yqgF(ts)) cultured at a non-permissive temperature. In addition, purified YqgF was shown to process the 5' end of pre-16S rRNA within 70S ribosomes in vitro. Mass spectrometry analysis of the total proteins in the yqgF(ts) mutant cells showed that the expression of genes containing multiple Shine-Dalgarno-like sequences was observed to be lower than in wild type. These results are interpreted to indicate that YqgF is involved in a novel enzymic activity necessary for the processing of pre-16S rRNA, thereby affecting elongation of translation.

Abstract
Bacillus subtilis LytF plays a principal role in cell separation through its localization at the septa and poles on the vegetative cell surface. In this study, we found that a mutation in a major lipoteichoic acid (LTA) synthase gene – ltaS – results in a considerable reduction in the σD-dependent transcription of lytF. The lytF transcription was also reduced in mutants that affected glycolipid anchor biosynthesis. Immunofluorescence microscopy revealed that both the numbers of cells expressing LytF and the LytF foci in these mutants were decreased. In addition, the transcriptional activity of lytF was almost abolished in the double (ltaS yfnI), triple (ltaS yfnI yqgS), and quadruple (ltaS yfnI yqgS yvgJ) mutants during vegetative growth. Cell separation defects in these mutants were partially restored with artificial expression of LytF. Interestingly, when lytF transcription was induced in the ltaS single or multiple mutants, LytF was localized not only at the septum, but also along the sidewall. The amounts of LytF bound to cell wall in the single (ltaS) and double (ltaS yfnI) mutants gradually increased as compared with that in the WT strain, and those in the triple (ltaS yfnI yqgS) and quadruple mutants were almost similar to that in the double mutant. Moreover, reduction of the lytF transcription and chained cell morphology in the ltaS mutant were completely restored with artificial induction of the yqgS gene. These results strongly suggest that LTA influences the temporal, σD-dependent transcription of lytF and is an additional inhibitory component to the vegetative cell separation enzyme LytF.

Abstract
We have developed a bilayered dermal-epidermal scaffold for application in the treatment of full-thickness skin defects. The dermal component gels in situ and adapts to the lesion shape, delivering human dermal fibroblasts in a matrix of fibrin and cross-linked hyaluronic acid modified with a cell adhesion-promoting peptide. Fibroblasts were able to form a tridimensional matrix due to material features such as tailored mechanical properties, presence of protease-degradable elements and cell-binding ligands. The epidermal component is a robust membrane containing cross-linked hyaluronic acid and poly-l-lysine, on which keratinocytes were able to attach and to form a monolayer. Amine-aldehyde bonding at the interface between the two components allows the formation of a tightly bound composite scaffold. Both parts of the scaffold were designed to provide cell-type-specific cues to allow for cell proliferation and form a construct that mimics the skin environment.

Abstract
We reported a case of surgically resected double bronchogenic cysts within the anterior mediastinum. An anterior mediastinal tumor had been found at medical examination 6 years ago in a 66-year-old man, but has been followed up without treatment. After the treatment of another disease, he was referred to our hospital for evaluation of the mediastinal tumor. A chest computed tomography showed 2 anterior mediastinal nodules. Nodules in the thymus were resected with video-assisted thoracic surgery. The tumors were both pathologically diagnosed as bronchogenic cysts.

Abstract
Correlative light and electron microscopy (CLEM) is one attractive method of observing biological specimens because it combines the advantages of both light microscopy (LM) and electron microscopy (EM). In LM, specimens are fully hydrated, and molecular species are distinguished based on the fluorescence colors of probes. EM provides both high-spatial-resolution images superior to those obtained with LM and ultrastructural information of cellular components. The combination of LM and EM gives much more information than either method alone, which helps us to analyze cellular function in more detail.We propose a Y2O3:Tm,Yb phosphor nanoparticle which allows upconversion luminescence (UCL) imaging with near-infrared (NIR) light excitation and cathodoluminescence (CL) imaging [1], where the light emission induced by an electron beam is called cathodoluminescence (CL). Due to electron beam excitation, the spatial resolution of CL microscopy is on the order of nanometers [2,3]. Upconversion is a process in which lower energy, longer wavelength excitation light is transduced to higher energy, shorter wavelength emission light. So far, in LM observation for CLEM, ultraviolet (UV) or visible light has been used for excitation. However, UV and visible light have limited ability to observe deep tissue regions due to absorption, scattering, and autofluorescence. On the other hand, NIR light does not suffer from these problems. Rare-earth-doped upconversion nanophosphors have been applied to biological imaging because of the advantages of NIR excitation [4].We investigated the UCL and CL spectra of Y2O3:Tm,Yb nanophosphors. Y2O3:Tm,Yb nanophosphors that emit visible and near-infrared UCL under 980nm irradiation and blue CL via electron beam excitation. To confirm bimodality of our nanophosphors, correlative UCL/CL images of the nanophosphors were obtained for the same region. The nanophosphors were poured onto a P doped Si substrate (Fig. 1(a)) and were irradiated with 980 nm NIR CW laser light or an electron beam. Fig. 1(b) shows the UCL image of the nanophosphors under 980 nm NIR CW laser irradiation, UCL spots were observed, but the individual nanophosphors in each spot were difficult to distinguish in the UCL image. On the other hand, the edges and the gap between the nanophosphors were clearly distinguished in the CL image (Fig. 1(c)), showing that the spatial-resolution of CL imaging was enough higher than that of UCL image. Abstract
The authors present a case of a 66-year-old male presenting with a superior sulcus tumor and severe hypoxemia due to bilateral multiple pulmonary arteriovenous fistulas. The unilateral pulmonary arterial occlusion test was useful before surgery because it enabled evaluation of the feasibility and safety of intraoperative pulmonary artery clamp and one-lung ventilation during lung resection. Results facilitated safe resection of the superior sulcus tumor using the modified transmanubrial osteomuscular sparing approach, providing an excellent surgical field.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Prasugrel is a third-generation thienopyridine prodrug and ticagrelor is a non-competitive P2Y12 receptor antagonist. In their phase 3 studies, both agents reduced rates of ischemic events relative to treatment with clopidogrel. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH The pharmacodynamic profile of anti-platelet effects of prasugrel was compared with that of ticagrelor in rats. KEY RESULTS The active metabolite of prasugrel was less potent than ticagrelor and its active metabolite on platelet aggregation in vitro. In contrast, prasugrel was a more potent antiplatelet agent than ticagrelor on ex vivo platelet aggregation: their ED50 values at peak for ADP 20 μmol·L(-1) were 1.9 and 8.0 mg·kg(-1) , respectively. Prasugrel's inhibition of platelet aggregation was maintained for up to 24 h after administration, but ticagrelor's duration of action was substantially shorter. Prasugrel and ticagrelor significantly inhibited thrombus formation with ED50 values of 1.8 and 7.7 mg·kg(-1) , respectively. Both agents also prolonged bleeding times (ED200 values of 3.0 and 13 mg·kg(-1) respectively) suggesting that at equivalent levels of inhibition of platelet aggregation, the agents would show comparable antithrombotic activity with similar bleeding risk. Platelet transfusion significantly increased blood platelet numbers similarly in prasugrel- and ticagrelor-treated rats. In the prasugrel-treated group, platelet transfusion caused significant shortening of bleeding time, while in the ticagrelor-treated group, platelet transfusion showed no influence on bleeding time under the experimental conditions employed. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS Prasugrel and ticagrelor showed several differences in their pharmacological profiles and these disparities may reflect their differing reversibility and/or pharmacokinetic profiles.

Abstract
The Gram-positive bacterium Bacillus subtilis has a thick cell wall. The cell wall contains various proteins, both for secretion and for peptidoglycan (PG) maintenance. Penicillin-binding proteins for PG synthesis, PG hydrolases (autolysins), and regulator proteins for the autolysins are the known components of the PG maintenance system. YqgA was identified as an abundant protein attached to the cell wall of B. subtilis through a proteomics analysis. The YqgA protein was localized at cell division sites during the transition period between the exponential and the stationary phases. YqgA localization was affected by mutations in the dl-endopeptidases (DLEPases), which are the autolysins involved in cell morphogenesis. Furthermore, yqgA mutations on a background of defective DLEPases led to delays in cell growth and cell morphological changes. These results demonstrate that yqgA is genetically related to the genes encoding DLEPases involved in cell morphogenesis.

Abstract
Macrophages (MΦ) are functionally classified into two types, anti-inflammatory M2 and pro-inflammatory M1. Importantly, we recently revealed that soluble HIV-1 proteins, particularly the pathogenetic protein Nef, preferentially activate M2-MΦ and drive them towards an M1-like MΦ, which might explain the sustained immune activation seen in HIV-1-infected patients. Here, we show that the preferential effect of Nef on M2-MΦ is mediated by TAK1 (TGF-β-activated kinase 1) and macropinocytosis. As with MAP kinases and NF-κB pathway, Nef markedly activated TAK1 in M-CSF-derived M2-MΦ but not in GM-CSF-derived M1-MΦ. Two Nef mutants, which were unable to activate MAP kinases and NF-κB pathway, failed to activate TAK1. Indeed, the TAK1 inhibitor 5Z-7-oxozeaenol as well as the ectopic expression of a dominant-negative mutant of TAK1 or TRAF2, an upstream molecule of TAK1, inhibited Nef-induced signaling activation and M1-like phenotypic differentiation of M2-MΦ. Meanwhile, the preferential effect of Nef on M2-MΦ correlated with the fact the Nef entered M2-MΦ more efficiently than M1-MΦ. Importantly, the macropinosome formation inhibitor EIPA completely blocked the internalization of Nef into M2-MΦ. Because the macropinocytosis activity of M2-MΦ was higher than that of M1-MΦ, our findings indicate that Nef enters M2-MΦ efficiently by exploiting their higher macropinocytosis activity and drives them towards M1-like MΦ by activating TAK1.

Abstract
Type 1 fimbriae are filamentous structures on Escherichia coli. These structures are important adherence factors. Because binding to the host cells is the first step of infection, type 1 fimbria is an important virulence factor of pathogenic E. coli. Expression of type 1 fimbria is regulated by a phase variation in which each individual bacterium can alternate between fimbriated (phase-ON) and nonfimbriated (phase-OFF) states. The phase variation is regulated by the flipping of the 314-bp fimS fragment, which contains the promoter driving the expression of the genes required for the synthesis of type 1 fimbria. Thus, the bacterial proteins able to interact with fimS are likely to be involved in regulating the expression of type 1 fimbria. To identify novel type 1 fimbria-regulating factors, we used an E. coli K12 proteome chip to screen for the bacterial factors able to interact with a 602-bp DNA fragment containing fimS and its adjacent regions. The Spr protein was identified by the proteome chip-based screening and further confirmed to be able to interact with fimS by electrophoretic mobility shift assay. Deletion of spr in the neonatal meningitis E. coli strain RS218 significantly increased the ratio of the bacterial colonies that contained the type 1 fimbria phase-ON cells on agar plates. In addition, Spr interfered with the interactions of fimS with the site-specific recombinases, FimB and FimE, which are responsible for mediating the flipping of fimS. These results suggest that Spr is involved in the regulation of type 1 fimbria expression through direct interaction with the invertible element fimS. These findings facilitate our understanding of the regulation of type 1 fimbria.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The role of microchimerism found in the peripheral blood of renal transplant recipients remains a matter of debate. We assessed the frequency of microchimerism after kidney transplantation and examined its influence on clinical courses over a 12-month follow-up period. PATIENTS AND METHODS Ten single-kidney recipients underwent microchimerism detection at 2 days, 2 weeks, and 1, 3, 6, and 12 months after transplantation, with mismatch human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-A, -B, and -C used as markers. RESULTS Microchimerism was detected in 8 (80%) patients at 2 days after kidney transplantation. In 3 of those, microchimerism became negative within 3 months after transplantation, whereas it remained present for up to 12 months in 3 patients (33 %). There was 1 acute rejection episode in a patient in whom microchimerism became negative within 3 months. Protocol renal graft biopsy specimens obtained 3 months after transplantation revealed no acute cellular-mediated rejection (ACMR) or acute antibody-mediated rejection (AAMR) in the 5 patients positive for microchimerism at 3 months. CONCLUSIONS Microchimerism was frequently detected after kidney transplantation. Microchimerism that remained for more than 3 months post-transplantation might be correlated with a lower incidence of rejection, thus its monitoring may help identify recipients with a low rejection risk.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The American College of Rheumatology/European League Against Rheumatism (ACR/EULAR) remission criteria for rheumatoid arthritis (RA) are more stringent than index-based criteria, making it more difficult to achieve a patient's global assessment (PGA) than an evaluator's global assessment (EGA). We investigated the reason for the discrepancy between the PGA and the EGA in a Japanese clinical cohort. METHOD We assessed clinical and laboratory variables in our clinical cohort. The frequency of remission achievement according to the ACR/EULAR remission criteria and predictors of the discrepancy between the PGA and EGA were analysed. RESULTS Of 370 patients with RA, 89 fulfilled PGA criteria and 167 patients fulfilled EGA criteria. The PGA was highly correlated with the visual analogue scale (VAS) pain score and non-inflammatory variables including Steinbrocker class and the Health Assessment Questionnaire Disability Index (HAQ-DI). Conversely, inflammatory variables, including swollen joint count (SJC), tender joint count (TJC), and C-reactive protein (CRP) levels, were significantly associated with the EGA. The main predictors of the discrepancy between the PGA and the EGA were patient's VAS pain score, SJC, and functional disability. CONCLUSIONS Increased pain and functional disability led to a discrepancy towards a worse PGA than EGA, whereas increased SJC led to an accordance towards a worse EGA.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We evaluated the efficacy and safety of superselective embolization with assistance of colonoscopy for acute colonic hemorrhage. METHODS Of 92 cases of acute colonic hemorrhage requiring colonoscopic intervention, 11 (12 %) could not be successfully treated. Of these, 10 patients (9 men, mean age 65.5 years, range 39-75 years) underwent superselective embolization. Hemorrhage was caused by diverticular disease (n = 8), polypectomy (n = 1), and vascular malformation (n = 1). In all 10 cases, the radiopaque clips were placed at the bleeding point via colonoscopy. Microcatheters were used in all procedures, and embolization was performed at the level of the vasa recta leading to or near the clips with Gelfoam particles, microcoils, or both. RESULTS Immediate hemostasis was achieved in all patients. In 6 of 10 patients (60 %), selective angiograms showed no active extravasation at the time of the procedure and the embolization was performed using clips as a landmark. In the remaining four patients, selective angiograms showed active extravasation from the vasa recta leading to the clips. The mean number of embolized vessels with no active extravasation and with active extravasation was 1.83 (range 1-3) and 1.25 (range 1-2), respectively. The mean duration of clinical follow-up was 11.6 months (range 1-29 months). One patient (10 %) bled from a different site than the treated site a month after embolization, but the bleeding ceased after endoscopic intervention. All the patients (100 %) were evaluated for objective evidence of ischemia by colonoscopy. Four of the 10 patients (40 %) were found endoscopically to have small areas of ischemia involving only the mucosa, but they remained asymptomatic. There was no bowel infarction or stricture. CONCLUSIONS Colonoscopy-assisted superselective embolization may be a safe and useful procedure for acute colonic hemorrhage without active extravasation on angiogram.

Abstract
Transplantation of bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs) for spinal cord injury (SCI) has been shown to improve functional outcome. BMSCs can be easily obtained from bone marrow aspirate and have fewer problems in the clinical application for human SCI from the ethical and legal points of view. Recently, we produced cells with neural stem and/or progenitor cell property and neural regeneration supporting capacity from human bone marrow stromal cells (human bone marrow stromal cell-derived neuroregenerative cells: hBMSC-NRs). The aim of the present study was to clarify the effectiveness of transplantation of hBMSC-NRs to injured spinal cord of severe combined immunodeficiency (NOD/SCID) mice. Neurite outgrowth assay of PC-12 cells was performed. One week after a T9-level contusion SCI, hBMSCs or hBMSC-NRs were transplanted into the spinal cord. After the transplantation, functional and histological examinations were performed. Conditioned media of hBMSC-NRs significantly promoted the neurite outgrowth of PC-12 cells in vitro. Transplanted hBMSC-NRs survived in the injured spinal cord 8 weeks after SCI. Immunohistochemistry revealed that the density of serotonin-positive fibers of the transplanted group was significantly higher than that of the control group at the epicenter and caudal segment to the injured site. The recovery of hind limb function of the hBMSC-NRs group was significantly better than that of the control group. In conclusion, hBMSC-NRs can be one of the realistic candidates for cell transplantation therapy for human SCI.

Abstract
The electric capacitance and conductance of a model membrane composed of a hydrophobic filter paper and a synthetic lipid analogue, i.e., dioleylphosphate, immersed in an electrolyte solution were observed with various frequencies ranging from 20 to 3×10(6) Hz. With successive increase of salt concentration in the external solution, the capacitance and conductance of the membrane increased discontinuously at a certain critical value of the external salt concentration. This variation of the capacitance and conductance of the membrane with the salt concentration was found to be reversible, and the critical value of salt concentration was independent of the adsorbed quantity of the lipid, and of the pore size of the filter paper as far as the adsorbed quantity of the dioleylphosphate was large.A theoretical analysis based on the membrane model for the filter paper-phospholipid system proposed in Part I of this series revealed that the dioleylphosphate impregnated in the filter paper changed its conformation from oil droplets or globular micelles to a number of bilayer membranes when the salt concentration reached the critical value for a given pair of electrolyte species and the membrane. The conformational change of the lipid analogue in the filter paper is discussed in connection with the ability of formation and stability of a black bilayer membrane of the dioleylphosphate.

Abstract
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES Ethanol is widely used for the embolization treatment of vascular malformations, but it can also cause serious complications such us pulmonary hypertension, cardiopulmonary collapse and death. The complications are considered secondary to pulmonary vasospasm and ethanol-induced sludge embolism, etc., We studied the hemodynamic effects of intravenous absolute ethanol injection and ethanol sludge injection in pigs. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 5 pigs underwent intravenous injection of ex vivo generated ethanol-induced sludge in which residual ethanol was removed (Group S) and 4 pigs underwent intravenous injection of absolute ethanol (Group E). Hemodynamic parameters related to the pulmonary and systemic circulation were compared between the groups. RESULTS Transient pulmonary hypertension was observed in both groups and the hemodynamic changes were similar in both groups. CONCLUSIONS Sludge can induce transient pulmonary hypertension or cardiopulmonary collapse, without ethanol and may be the mechanism by which ethanol induces its adverse hemodynamic effects.

Abstract
Protooncogene T-cell leukemia 1 (TCL1), which is implicated in human T-cell prolymphocytic leukemia (T-PLL), interacts with Akt and enhances its kinase activity, functioning as an Akt kinase co-activator. Two major isoforms of TCL1 Protooncogenes (TCL1 and TCL1b) are present adjacent to each other on human chromosome 14q.32. In human T-PLL, both TCL1 and TCL1b are activated by chromosomal translocation. Moreover, TCL1b-transgenic mice have never been created. Therefore, it remains unclear whether TCL1b itself, independent of TCL1, exhibits oncogenicity. In co-immunoprecipitation assays, both ectopic and endogenous TCL1b interacted with Akt. In in vitro Akt kinase assays, TCL1b enhanced Akt kinase activity in dose- and time-dependent manners. Bioinformatics approaches utilizing multiregression analysis, cluster analysis, KEGG (Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes) pathway mapping, Venn diagrams and Gene Ontology (GO) demonstrated that TCL1b showed highly homologous gene-induction signatures similar to Myr-Akt or TCL1. TCL1b exhibited oncogenicity in in vitro colony-transformation assay. Further, two independent lines of β-actin promoter-driven TCL1b-transgenic mice developed angiosarcoma on the intestinal tract. Angiosarcoma is a rare form of cancer in humans with poor prognosis. Using immunohistochemistry, 11 out of 13 human angiosarcoma samples were positively stained with both anti-TCL1b and anti-phospho-Akt antibodies. Consistently, in various cancer tissues, 69 out of 146 samples were positively stained with anti-TCL1b, out of which 46 were positively stained with anti-phospho-Akt antibodies. Moreover, TCL1b structure-based inhibitor 'TCL1b-Akt-in' inhibited Akt kinase activity in in vitro kinase assays and PDGF (platelet-derived growth factor)-induced Akt kinase activities-in turn, 'TCL1b-Akt-in' inhibited cellular proliferation of sarcoma. The current study disclosed TCL1b bears oncogenicity and hence serves as a novel therapeutic target for human neoplastic diseases.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine the relationship between primary progressive aphasia (PPA) and neurodegenerative dementia. METHODS Subjects were selected from 1723 consecutive patients who had undergone a medical examination at the Kumamoto University Hospital Dementia Clinic, Japan, from April 2007 to October 2012. First, patients with semantic dementia (SD) and patients with progressive non-fluent aphasia were diagnosed by clinical diagnostic criteria for frontotemporal lobar degeneration. Next, in the same cohort, patients with PPA were diagnosed according to the recent international consensus criteria. The relationship and clinical symptoms including language and psychiatric symptoms in each patient group were then compared. RESULTS In all, 12 of 27 SD patients fulfilled both SD and semantic variant PPA criteria (SD+PPA+ group), whereas the other 15 who met the SD criteria could not be included in the semantic variant PPA group due to prominent behavioural disturbances (SD+PPA- group). No significant differences in clinical characteristics and language functions were found between these 2 groups. Neuropsychiatric symptoms were more severe in the SD+PPA- group. CONCLUSION The results suggest the possibility that SD and semantic variant PPA may be identical, regardless of different severities of behavioural disturbance. When considering the language disorder of neurodegenerative dementia, it may be more important to diagnose the subtype of language disorder the patient has than to emphasise isolated language deficits.

Abstract
The YgjD protein is essential for the synthesis of the universal tRNA modification, N(6) -threonylcarbamoyladenosine (t(6) A), which is necessary for the decoding of ANN codons. We isolated a suppressor (ygjDsup ) of the ygjD(ts) mutant by its permissive growth at high temperature in Escherichia coli. Resequencing of the ygjDsup mutant genome showed the presence of a complicated chromosome rearrangement, an inverse insertion of a large duplicated region (c. 450 kb) into a small deleted region. The temperature-resistant growth associated with ygjDsup was due to the presence of multicopy suppressor genes, yjeE and groL, of the ygjD(ts) mutation in the duplicated region. This DNA rearrangement was not simply mediated by IS1 transposition, but the duplicated region was flanked by IS1. We showed that the frequency of IS1 transposition was increased in ygjD(ts) mutants. The transposase of IS1 is coded for by the insB gene, and its translation occurs through a frameshift of a ribosome translating upstream of the insA gene. We showed that this frameshifting frequency was increased by the ygjD(ts) mutation. These results indicated that the mutation of the gene for tRNA modification, t(6) A, affected IS1 transposition.

Abstract
We report a rare case of pulmonary metastasis of invasive thymoma, with endobronchial polypoid growth causing hemosputum in a 77-year-old man. The patient had been admitted 8 years earlier for the treatment of invasive thymoma and had undergone extended thymo-thymectomy through a mid-sternotomy, followed by a course of radiotherapy. Pulmonary metastases developed 3 years after surgery, for which the patient received several courses of chemotherapy; however, the tumor continued to progress gradually. He presented at our emergency unit within 4 years of completion of the chemotherapy, with sudden massive hemoptysis. We performed endotracheal intubation to prevent suffocation and bronchoscopic examination revealed that a tumor and blood clots had obstructed the left main bronchus. We performed bronchial arterial embolization and endoscopic electrosurgery to resect the tumor, then occluded the responsible bronchus with an endobronchial Watanabe spigot to prevent further endobronchial polypoid growth and bronchial hemorrhage from the invasive thymoma.
