Abstract
We confirmed the monophyly of the Agaraceae based on phylogenetic analyses of six mitochondrial and six chloroplast gene sequences from Agarum, Costaria, Dictyoneurum, and Thalassiophyllum species, as well as representative species from other laminarialean families. However, the genus Agarum was paraphyletic, comprising two independent clades, A. clathratum/A. turneri and A. fimbriatum/A. oharaense. The latter clade was genetically most closely related to Dictyoneurum spp., and morphologically, the species shared a flattened stipe bearing fimbriae (potential secondary haptera) in the mid- to upper portion. The phylogenetic position of Thalassiophyllum differed between the two datasets: in the chloroplast gene phylogeny, Thalassiophyllum was included in the A. clathratum/A. turneri clade, but in the mitochondrial gene phylogeny, it formed an independent clade at the base of the Agaraceae, the same position it took in the phylogeny when the data from both genomes were combined despite a larger number of bp being contributed by the chloroplast gene sequences. Considering the remarkable morphological differences between Thalassiophyllum and other Agaraceae, and the molecular support, we conclude that Thalassiophyllum should be reinstated as an independent genus. Dictyoneurum reticulatum was morphologically distinguishable from D. californicum due to its midrib, but because of their close genetic relationship, further investigations are needed to clarify species-level taxonomy. In summary, we propose the establishment of a new genus Neoagarum to accommodate A. fimbriatum and A. oharanese and the reinstatement of the genus Thalassiophyllum.

Abstract
Brown algae have evolved complex multicellularity in the heterokont lineage. They are phylogenetically distant to land plants, fungi and animals. Especially, the members of Laminariales (so-called kelps) have developed highly differentiated tissues. Extracellular matrix (ECM) plays pivotal roles in a number of essential processes in multicellular organisms, such as cell adhesion, cell and tissue differentiations, cell-to-cell communication, and responses to environmental stimuli. In these processes, a set of extracellular secreted proteins called the secretome operates remodeling of the physicochemical nature of ECM and signal transduction by interacting with cell surface proteins and signaling molecules. Characterization of the secretome is a critical step to clarify the contributions of ECM to the multicellularity of brown algae. However, the identity of the brown algal secretome has been poorly understood. In order to reveal the repertory of the brown algal secretome and its involvement in the evolution of Laminariales, we conducted a genome-wide analysis of the brown algal secretome utilizing the published complete genome data of Ectocarpus siliculosus and Saccharina japonica as well as newly obtained RNA-seq data of seven laminarialean species (Agarum clathratum, Alaria crassifolia, Aureophycus aleuticus, Costaria costata, Pseudochorda nagaii, Saccharina angustata and Undaria pinnatifida) largely covering the laminarialean families. We established the in silico pipeline to systematically and accurately detect the secretome by combining multiple prediction algorithms for the N-terminal signal peptide and transmembrane domain within the protein sequence. From 16,189 proteins of E. siliculosus and 18,733 proteins of S. japonica, 552 and 964 proteins respectively were predicted to be classified as the secretome. Conserved domain analysis showed that the domain repertory were very similar to each other, and that of the brown algal secretome was partially common with that of the secretome of other multicellular organisms (land plants, fungi and animals). In the laminarialean species, it was estimated that the gene abundance and the domain architecture of putative ECM remodeling-related proteins were altered compared with those of E. siliculosus, and that the alteration started from the basal group of Laminariales. These results suggested that brown algae have developed their own secretome, and its functions became more elaborated in the more derived members in Laminariales.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Aging anorexia, defined as loss of appetite and/or reduced food intake, has been postulated as a risk factor for frailty. Impairments of taste and smell perception in elderly people can lead to reduced enjoyment of food and contribute to the anorexia of aging. OBJECTIVE To evaluate the relationship between frailty and taste and smell perception in elderly people living in urban areas. DESIGN Data from the baseline evaluation of 768 residents aged ≥ 65 years who enrolled in a comprehensive geriatric health examination survey was analyzed. Fourteen out of 29-items of Appetite, Hunger, Sensory Perception questionnaire (AHSP), frailty, age, sex, BMI, chronic conditions and IADL were evaluated. AHSP was analyzed as the total score of 8 taste items (T) and 6 smell items (S). Frailty was diagnosed using a modified Fried's frailty criteria. RESULTS The area under the receiver operator curves for detection of frailty demonstrated that T (0.715) had moderate accuracy, but S (0.657) had low accuracy. The cutoffs, sensitivity, specificity and Youden Index (YI) values for each perception were T: Cutoff 26.5 (YI: 0.350, sensitivity: 0.639, specificity: 0.711) and S: Cutoff 18.5 (YI: 0.246, sensitivity: 0.690, specificity: 0.556). Results from multiple logistic regression models, after adjusting for age, sex, IADL and chronic conditions showed that participants under the T cutoff were associated with exhaustion and those below the S cutoff were associated with slow walking speed. The adjusted logistic models for age, sex, IADL and chronic conditions showed significant association between T and frailty (OR 2.81, 95% CI 1.29-6.12), but not between S and frailty (OR 1.73, 95% CI 0.83-3.63). CONCLUSIONS Taste and smell perception, particularly taste perception, were associated with a greater risk of frailty in community-dwelling elderly people. These results suggest that lower taste and smell perception may be an indicator of frailty in old age.

Abstract
Implant surfaces should be modified to achieve excellent cell compatibility as well as antibacterial activity. Our previous study demonstrated that titanium plates anodized by being discharged in NaCl (Ti-Cl) exhibited high antibacterial activity. Since Ti-Cl was prepared with a NaCl solution, we hypothesized that Ti-Cl would exhibit low toxicity toward cells. The aims of this study were to characterize the surface of Ti-Cl and investigate the cell compatibility (MC3T3-E1 and L929 cells) of Ti-Cl. The results demonstrated that, since the TiCl3 formed on the Ti-Cl surface was hydrolyzed into HCl, HClO, and TiOH after immersion in pure distilled water, TiCl3 contributed to the antibacterial activity of Ti-Cl. On the other hand, TiO formed on the Ti-Cl surface enhanced cell extension and cell growth through a larger adsorption of fibronectin compared with the pure titanium control. These findings suggest that antibacterial titanium is a promising material for use in dental implant systems.

Abstract
Calcifying fibrous tumours (CFTs) are rare benign lesions that usually affect the soft tissues, the mesentery and the peritoneum. Gastric CFT is particularly rare. Here, we report a CFT found incidentally in a 31-year-old male. The mass was well circumscribed and showed partial calcification on the CT scan, with dark signal intensity seen on T2 weighted MRI. To the best of our knowledge, there is very limited published information concerning imaging findings of CFTs. We discuss the CT scan and MRI findings of this patient, which can be considered typical for gastric CFT, and present a review of the limited literature available.

Abstract
We report a case of minimal thyroid carcinoma diagnosed by a solitary pulmonary metastasis. A 70's man visited a medical practitioner because of chest discomfort, and there was an abnormality on the chest X-ray. Chest computed tomography(CT) showed a nodule in the right middle lobe of the lung. Positron emission tomography with 18-fluorodeoxyglucose(FDG)-PET revealed increased FDG uptake in that tumor, but did not reveal any other lesion. The tumor was clinically suspected to be a carcinoid tumor, primary lung cancer, metastatic lung cancer, or a benign tumor. Right middle lobe lobectomy was performed, and the tumor was diagnosed as a metastasis from a thyroid papillary carcinoma by pathological diagnosis during surgery. After surgery, we found a tumor in the left lobe of the thyroid by CT and US. Because the patient did not desire 131I therapy, he underwent a left hemithyroidectomy and neck dissection. There was a papillary carcinoma 1.0 cm in the thyroid gland and there were 3 cervical lymph node metastases. There has been no recurrence for 11 years after surgery.

Abstract
A49 -year-old woman presented with a 3.5 cm mass in her right breast. Mammography revealed a lobular mass with poorly defined margins and no microcalcification. Ultrasonography showed a hypoechoic mass with an irregular margin. The tumor was diagnosed as breast carcinoma using a core needle biopsy. The patient underwent a modified radical mastectomy with sentinel lymph node biopsy, and received adjuvant chemotherapy. The tumor consisted of 2 types of carcinoma. The center of the tumor was solid-tubular carcinoma, and the periphery was acinic cell carcinoma(ACC). Histopathologically, the neoplastic cells of the periphery were characterized by widespread acinic cell-like differentiation with a eosinophilic granular or clear cytoplasm, resembling acinic cells of the parotid gland(t3, f[+], ly0, v0, n0, stage II B). Immunohistochemically, the specimens tested positive for salivary gland amylase, and negative for collagen type IV , ER, PgR, and HER2. We administered UFT as adjuvant chemotherapy. Eight months after surgery, local recurrence was observed. ACC of the breast is rare, and has been reported to have a good prognosis. Further investigations are needed to elucidate its true histogenesis the appropriate treatment.

Abstract
A70 's male was diagnosed with advanced papillary thyroid carcinoma and underwent total thyroidectomy with left lymph node dissection(T4a, N1b, M0, stage IV A). Six years after the surgery, subclavicular and mediastinal lymph node recurrence was observed. Radioiodine therapy was not successful for those lesions. Lymph node dissection was performed via the cervical and transsternal approaches. One year after the second surgery, cervical and mediastinal lymph node recurrence was again observed. We removed the cervical lymph nodes via the cervical approach. One month after cervical dissection, we removed the mediastinal lymph nodes via video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery(VATS). The lymph nodes were relatively easily dissected by VATS under excellent surgical views. Repeat mediastinal dissection via median sternotomy could be associated with significant complications. VATS is expected to reduce the risk of reoperation and enhance surgical outcomes.

Abstract
Zeacarpa leiomorpha is a crustose brown alga endemic to South Africa. The species has been tentatively placed in Ralfsiaceae, but its ordinal assignment has been uncertain. The molecular phylogeny of brown algae based on concatenated DNA sequences of seven chloroplast and mitochondrial gene sequences (atpB, psaA, psaB, psbA, psbC, rbcL, and cox1) of taxa covering most of the orders revealed the most related phylogenetic relationship of Z. leiomorpha to Nemoderma tingitanum (Nemodermatales) rather than Ralfsiaceae (Ralfsiales). Morphologically, Zeacarpa and Nemoderma share crustose thallus structure and multiple discoidal chloroplasts without pyrenoids in each cell, however, the formation of lateral unilocular zoidangia in tufts in loose upright filaments in Zeacarpa is distinctive in brown algae. Considering the relatively distant genetic divergence between the two taxa, comparable to that among families or orders in representative brown algae, in addition to the above-mentioned unique morphological features, we propose the classification of Zeacarpa in a new family Zeacarpaceae in the order Nemodermatales.

Abstract
The ϕ-Λ(1520) interference effect in the γp→K^{+}K^{-}p reaction has been measured for the first time in the energy range from 1.673 to 2.173 GeV. The relative phases between ϕ and Λ(1520) production amplitudes were obtained in the kinematic region where the two resonances overlap. The measurement results support strong constructive interference when K^{+}K^{-} pairs are observed at forward angles but destructive interference for proton emission at forward angles. Furthermore, the observed interference effect does not account for the sqrt[s]=2.1 GeV bump structure in forward differential cross sections for ϕ photoproduction. This fact suggests possible exotic structures such as a hidden-strangeness pentaquark state, a new Pomeron exchange, or rescattering processes via other hyperon states.

Abstract
Most swarmers (swimming cells) of the stramenopile group, ranging from unicellular protist to giant kelps (brown algae), have two heterogeneous flagella: a long anterior flagellum (AF) and a relatively shorter posterior flagellum (PF). These flagellated cells often exhibit phototaxis upon light stimulation, although the mechanism by which how the phototactic response is regulated remains largely unknown. A flavoprotein concentrating at the paraflagellar body (PFB) on the basal part of the PF, which can emit green autofluorescence under blue light irradiance, has been proposed as a possible blue light photoreceptor for brown algal phototaxis although the nature of the flavoprotein still remains elusive. Recently, we identified helmchrome as a PF-specific flavoprotein protein in a LC-MS/MS-based proteomics study of brown algal flagella (Fu et al. 2014). To verify the conservation of helmchrome, in the present study, the absence or presence and the localization of helmchrome in swarmers of various algal species were investigated. The results showed that helmchrome was only detected in phototactic swarmers but not the non-phototactic ones of the stramenopile group. Electron microscopy further revealed that the helmchrome detectable swarmers bear a conserved PFB-eyespot complex, which may serve as structural basis for light sensing. It is speculated that all three conserved properties: helmchrome, the PFB structure, and the eyespot apparatus, will be essential parts for phototaxis of stramenopile swarmers.
