Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aims to improve the diagnostic and therapeutic efficacy through analysis of clinical and radiographic characteristics in pulmonary endometriosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS This retrospective study was conducted from January 1998 to December 2008. The clinical and radiographic characteristics of five patients diagnosed as pulmonary endometriosis were evaluated. RESULTS Among the five female patients of reproductive age, one case presented with recurrent pneumothorax, four cases presented with recurrent hemoptysis. Episode of pneumothorax and hemoptysis had the close association with the menstrual cycle. Except for pneumothorax case, the computed tomography (CT) scans during menstruation showed patchy opacification or infiltration (n = 4). Histopathologic examination of the resected specimen conformed typical endometrial tissue in the lungs. Misdiagnosis occurred involving spontaneous pneumothorax (n = 1), pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) (n = 3), and bronchiectasis (n = 1). CONCLUSION Pulmonary endometriosis is prone to misdiagnosis. The combination of medical history and CT scans in association with menstrual cycle was useful to make the differential diagnosis after effective diagnostic treatment of hormone therapy.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore the effect of fixation of Kirschner needle and thread cancellous bone screw through the sinus tarsi interstice for the treatment of calcaneal fractures. METHODS From January 2009 to December 2012,20 patients with calcaneal fracture were treated by minimally invasive Kirschner wire and threaded cancellous bone screw fixation and bone graft,including 12 males and 8 females with an average age of 39 years old ranging from 21 to 65. Among them, 8 cases were left foot, 12 were right foot. According to Sanders's classification, 8 cases were type II, 10 cases were type III, 2 cases were type IV. RESULTS All patients were followed up from 6 to 16 months with an average of 12 months. The incision were healed. Böhler angle were increased from preoperative (17.75 +/- 4.22) degrees to postoperative (26.85 +/- 7.37) degrees (t = 4.308, P = 0.000). Gissane angle were reduced from preoperative (137.05 +/- 24.91) degrees to postoperative (113.75 +/- 13.17) degrees (t = 7.083, P = 0.000). At 3 months after operation, the scores of AOFAS were 85.50 +/- 7.99; the results were excellent in 5 feet and good in 11 feet, fair in 3 feet, and poor in 1 foot. CONCLUSION Minimally invasive fixation of Kirschner needle and thread cancellous bone screw fixation is a simple operation, it can get reliable fixation, easy to remove, low cost, less postoperative complications, and it is a good treatment of calcaneal fracture.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the effect of environmental change in marshland after the implementation of the Three Gorges Reservoir Project on schistosomiasis in Jiangsu Province. METHODS The hydrologic data of Nanjing City in Jiangsu section of the Yangtze River, and the data regarding the marshlands, the snail status and schistosomiasis morbidity in areas adjacent to the Yangtze River in Jiangsu Province were collected, and field snail surveys were performed in typical marshlands. RESULTS Following the implementation of the Three Gorges Reservoir Project, the water level in Nanjing section of the Yangtze River appeared a year-dependent gradual decline tendency. The mean peak water level on January to March, 2012 (spring) increased by 0.41 m as compared to that before the construction of the project in 2002, while the peak water level on April to December, 2012 decreased by 0.32 m as compared to that before the construction of the project in 2002. The endemic situation of schistosomiasis showed a decline tendency in areas adjacent to the Yangtze River in Jiangsu Province. The area with infected snails along the Yangtze River was 0, the positive rates of serological tests and parasitological tests of the population were 0.73% and 0.004%, respectively in 2012. CONCLUSIONS Both the schistosomiasis morbidity and snail status appear a decline tendency in areas adjacent to the Yangtze River along the lower reaches of the Yangtze River, Jiangsu Province after the implementation of the Three Gorges Reservoir Project.

Abstract
Direct deposition of graphene on a dielectric substrate is demonstrated using a chemical vapor deposition system with a two-temperature reactor. The two-temperature reactor is utilized to offer sufficient, well-proportioned floating Cu atoms and to provide a temperature gradient for facile synthesis of graphene on dielectric surfaces. The evaporated Cu atoms catalyze the reaction in the presented method. C atoms and Cu atoms respectively act as the nuclei for forming graphene film in the low-temperature zone and the zones close to the high-temperature zones. A uniform and high-quality graphene film is formed in an atmosphere of sufficient and well-proportioned floating Cu atoms. Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy confirm the presence of uniform and high-quality graphene.

Abstract
Percutaneous coronary intervention is a revolutionary treatment for ischemic heart disease, but in-stent restenosis (ISR) remains a clinical challenge. Inflammation, smooth muscle proliferation, endothelial function impairment, and local thrombosis have been identified as the main mechanisms for ISR. Considering the multifactorial mechanisms of ISR, a novel therapeutic agent with multiple bioactivities is required. Ghrelin is a novel gut-brain peptide predominantly produced by the stomach, and has been shown to play a role in various cardiovascular activities, such as increasing myocardial contractility, improving cardiac output, and inhibiting ventricular remodeling, as well as attenuating cardiac ischemia-reperfusion injury. Recent studies have demonstrated that ghrelin effectively inhibits vascular inflammation and vascular smooth muscle cell proliferation, repairs endothelial cells, promotes vascular endothelial function, inhibits platelet aggregation, and exerts antithrombotic effects. These findings suggest that ghrelin may be an innovative therapeutic candidate for the prevention and treatment of ISR.

Abstract
Siganus fuscescens, which is a small commercially important marine fish, is wildly distributed in shallow waters throughout the tropical and subtropical Indo-Pacific and Eastern Mediterranean regions. It is part of a group known as rabbitfish. Fifteen new polymorphic microsatellite markers for S. fuscescens were identified, and 32 wild individuals were used to evaluate the degree of polymorphism of these markers. The number of alleles per locus ranged from 2 to 12, and the polymorphism information content ranged from 0.210 to 0.849. The observed and expected heterozygosities were 0.142-0.808 and 0.225-0.853, respectively. Although significant deviations from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium were detected at 2 loci (Sf1-37-2 and Sf1-47), no significant deviations were detected at the other 13 loci. These microsatellite markers will provide a useful tool for studies on genetic diversity and differentiation of S. fuscescens.

Abstract
The green lipped mussel, also known as the Asian green mussel (Perna viridis) is a fast reproducing and valuable food source, but it is also considered an invasive species and can clog and damage pipes and marine equipment. Eight novel polymorphic microsatellite loci for P. viridis were isolated and characterized. Microsatellite polymorphism was evaluated in 30 individuals collected from Xiamen, China. The number of alleles per locus and the polymorphism information content ranged from 2 to 5 and from 0.3092 to 0.7031, respectively. The observed and expected heterozygosities were 0.1538-0.8400 and 0.1448-0.6833, respectively. The loci identified in this study could provide a useful tool for the genetic population structure analysis of P. viridis.

Abstract
Suppression subtractive hybridization was used to analyze differential expression of genes in rat peritoneal macrophages after granulocyte macrophage colony-stimulating factor treatment. We identified and cloned the mouse C10 analog gene in the rat, and named it as ccl6. The full-length cDNA of rat ccl6 was 467 bp, which contains a single-open reading frame and encodes 116 amino acid residues. Compared with other C-C chemokines, the rat ccl6 gene had an unusual four-exon genome structure instead of the typical three exons, it had the highest homology with murine ccl6. The rat ccl6 gene was localized on chromosome 10, where most of the C-C chemokine superfamily members are located. The recombinant rat C-C chemokine ligand 6 (CCL6) protein was expressed by the pGEX4T-1 plasmid in Escherichia coli BL21. The purified recombinant protein had bioactivity similar to that of mouse CCL6, which is a chemoattractant for macrophages and lymphocytes, but not for neutrophils.

Abstract
The pen shell, Atrina pectinata, is a commercially important bivalve species, widely consumed in the Asian Pacific region. We identified 16 new microsatellite makers for A. pectinata using a modified fast isolation by AFLP of sequences containing repeat protocols; 27 individuals were collected from Xiamen to evaluate the degree of polymorphism. The number of polymorphic alleles per locus ranged from 2 to 11. The observed and expected heterozygosities were 0.050-0.913 and 0.049-0.869, respectively. The loci identified in this study could provide a useful tool for research on genetic diversity and genetic differentiation of A. pectinata populations.

Abstract
Sex ratios and gravid characteristics were analysed for the crocodile shark Pseudocarcharias kamoharai from the tropical eastern Pacific Ocean. Gravid females ranged from 80 to 102 cm fork length (L(F) ). The mode litter size was four (two embryos per uterus), mean embryo length was linearly correlated with maternal length (r = 0·465, n = 32); there was no significant difference in L(F) between female and male embryos.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to assess the correlation of sperm morphology with the intrauterine insemination (IUI) outcome in patients with normal sperm concentration and motility. About 412 couples who underwent 908 IUI cycles were involved in the present study. A total of 110 clinical pregnancies were achieved with a pregnancy rate of 12.11% per cycle. The pregnancy rates per cycle were 7.60%, 12.67%, 13.62% and 13.13% in patients with <5%, 5-9%, 10-14% and >14% normal forms, respectively. The lowest pregnancy rate (7.60%) was obtained in the group with normal forms below 5%. However, this rate was not significantly different from other subgroups. Moreover, no pregnancies occurred in women >35 years old with normal sperm forms below 5%, in comparison with that in other subgroups of the same age. For women younger than 35 years old, no significant difference in pregnancy rate was observed in terms of different level of morphologically normal sperm. Our results show that for patients with normal sperm concentration and motility, IUI is recommended for first-line treatment when the woman is younger than 35 years, or morphologically normal sperm is ≥ 5%. IVF/ICSI should be performed when the normal forms are <5% and female age is > 35 years.

Abstract
Protein levels of aquaglyceroporins AQP3, AQP7 and AQP9 were measured by immunohistochemistry and Western blotting in epithelial ovarian tumour tissue from 98 patients and in normal ovary tissue from 20 persons with uterine myoma. AQP3 and AQP9 proteins were detected immunohistochemically in the basolateral membranes of benign and borderline tumour cells and were found to be distributed throughout the plasma membranes of malignant tumour cells. AQP7 protein was localized in the plasma membranes of benign tumour cells but, in borderline and malignant tumour cells, it was selectively stained in the nuclear membrane. Western blotting showed significantly higher AQP7 and AQP9 protein expression in malignant and borderline tumours than in benign tumour and normal ovarian tissue. AQP9 expression level was positively and significantly correlated with tumour grade and histological type. It was concluded that a high level of aquaglyceroporin expression may be an important factor in ovarian carcinogenesis.

Abstract
Antititin antibody occurs in the serum of myasthenia gravis (MG) patients with thymoma (MGT), and is a diagnostic marker for the disease. The mechanism that triggers MGT development is, however, unclear. This study evaluated the role of the main immunogenic region (MIR) of titin in MGT pathogenesis. Titin MIR antiserum (antibody titre 1:16) was obtained and an in situ immunohistochemical study of thymomatous tissue samples was performed. Strong immunostaining for titin MIR was observed on epithelial cell membranes in MGT patients, and the degree of immunostaining was directly proportional to the number of epithelial cells in thymomatous tissue. Serum antititin antibody levels were closely related to titin MIR levels in thymoma cells; however, titin MIR levels did not appear to be related to MG severity. Antititin antibody may be a good surrogate marker for thymoma but is probably not involved in the pathogenesis of MGT.

Abstract
The objective was to explore mechanisms of the influence of porcine cumulus cells (CC) on oocyte maturation. Immature porcine oocytes were matured in groups of denuded oocyte (DOs), cumulus-oocyte complexes (COCs), denuded oocytes co-cultured with CC (DoCC), or with cumulus-oocyte complexes (DoCOCs). Ooplasmic mitochondria-lipid distributions, glutathione (GSH)-adenosine triphosphate (ATP) contents, calcium release pattern, and developmental competence after parthenogenetic activation were assessed after IVM. The portion of matured oocytes after IVM and the developmental competence and GSH content in single oocytes were lower in DOs than in COCs (P<0.05). In contrast, the maturation rate and development in DoCOCs and COCs were higher than in DoCC and DOs (P<0.05). The blastocyst rate in DoCOCs was higher than in DOs (P<0.05), and ATP content in COCs was higher than in all other groups (P<0.01). In addition, the rate of oocytes with damaged oolemma in DOs (35%) was significantly higher than in COCs (3%), DoCOCs (7%), and DoCC (10%). The rate of oocytes with evenly distributed mitochondria was 70% in DOs, which was significantly lower than in COCs and DoCC (89 and 84%, respectively). The percentage of oocytes with normal lipid droplets distributions in COCs (70%) was significantly higher than in three other groups, whereas both percentages in DoCC and DoCOCs were higher than in DOs (P<0.05). The duration of [Ca(2+)] rise in DOs was longer than in three other groups, whereas the duration was shortest in COCs. The amplitude of the [Ca(2+)] rise in DOs was significantly lower than in other groups (P<0.05), but the amplitude did not differ significantly among DoCC, DoCOCs and COCs. In conclusion, the presence of porcine CC during IVM functionally affected ooplasmic mitochondria-lipid distributions and GSH-ATP contents, which may affect the calcium release pattern and developmental competence of oocytes after electro-activation.

Abstract
Gemcitabine is a chemotherapeutic drug widely used in the treatment of non-small cell lung carcinoma, especially in advanced lung adenocarcinoma. However, many patients with advanced lung adenocarcinoma show a resistance to gemcitabine. Overexpression of COX-2 has been found in human non-small cell lung cancer tissues and itA s cell lines. Evidences show that COX-2 is involved in drug resistance of tumor. However, It is unknown whether COX-2 inhibitor can augment the efficacy of gemcitabine against lung adenocarcinoma. In this study, A549 cells were treated with gemcitabine and/or NS-398. The cell viability was examined by MTT assay. The cell cycle distribution and apoptotic ratio were tested by flow cytometry. The levels of p21WAF1, p27KIP1, p16INK4a and p15INK4b expression were detected by western blotting. After the cells were treated with gemcitabine along with NS-398, more cells were arrested in G1 phase and went to apoptosis. The levels of p21WAF1 and p27KIP1 protein were elevated, while the levels of p16INK4a and p15INK4b protein were not changed. It can be concluded that NS-398 enhances the efficacy of gemcitabine against lung adenocarcinoma and the efficacy is associated with up-regulation of p21WAF1 and p27KIP1protein.

In this study, a rapid ultra-performance liquid chromatography (UPLC) method was developed for simultaneous determination of 15 flavonoids, including hexandraside E, kaempferol-3-O-rhamnoside, hexandraside F, epimedin A, epimedin B, epimedin C, icariin, epimedoside C, baohuoside II, caohuoside C, baohuoside VII, sagittatoside A, sagittatoside B, 2''-O-rhamnosyl icariside II and baohuoside I in different species of Epimedium. The analysis was performed on Waters Acquity UPLC system with an Acquity UPLC BEH C18 column (50 mm x 2.1mm I.D., 1.7 microm) and gradient elution of 50mM acetic acid aqueous solution and acetonitrile within 12 min. All calibration curves showed good linearity (R2>0.9997) within test ranges. The LOD and LOQ were lower than 0.13 and 0.52 ng on column, respectively. The R.S.D.s for intra- and inter-day of 15 analytes were less than 5.0% at three levels, and the recoveries were 95.0-103.7%. The validated method was successfully applied to quantitatively analyze 15 flavonoids in different species of Epimedium. The results showed there were great variations among the contents of investigated flavonoids. Hierarchical clustering analysis based on characteristics of 15 investigated compounds peaks in UPLC profiles showed that 37 samples were divided into 3 main clusters, which were in accordance with their flavonoids contents. The simulative mean chromatogram of the high content cluster was generated to compare the samples from different species and/or locations of Epimedium. Four flavonoids including epimedin A, B, C and icariin were selected as markers for quality control of the species of Epimedium used as Yinyanghuo.

Abstract
Herba Epimedii (family Berberidaceae), Yinyanghuo in Chinese, is one of the commonly used Chinese medicines. Flavonoids are considered as its active components. In this study, a reliable pressurized liquid extraction (PLE) and HPLC method was developed for simultaneous determination of 15 flavonoids, namely hexandraside E, kaempferol-3-O-rhamnoside, hexandraside F, epimedin A, epimedin B, epimedin C, icariin, epimedoside C, baohuoside II, caohuoside C, baohuoside VII, sagittatoside A, sagittatoside B, 2''-O-rhamnosyl icariside II and baohuoside I in different species of Epimedium. The analysis was performed by using a Zorbax SB-C18 analytical column (250 mm x 4.6 mm I.D., 5 microm) at gradient elution of water and acetonitrile with diode-array detection (270 nm). All calibration curves showed good linearity (r(2)>0.9997) within test ranges. The LOD and LOQ were lower than 1.31 ng and 2.62 ng on column, respectively. The RSD for intra- and inter-day of 15 analytes was less than 3.8% at three levels, and the recoveries were 90.5-106.8%. The validated method was successfully applied for the analysis of 15 flavonoids in different species of Epimedium which had great variation on the contents of investigated flavonoids. Hierarchical clustering analysis based on the characteristics of 15 investigated compound peaks in HPLC profiles showed that 26 samples were divided into three main clusters, which were in accordance with their flavonoid contents. Four flavonoids including epimedin A, B, C and icariin were optimized as markers for quality control of the species of Epimedium used as Yinyanghuo.

Abstract
ZnO:Co nanoclusters were synthesized by nanocluster-beam deposition with averaged particle size of 5 nm and porous structure, which were for the first time adopted to construct a novel amperometric glucose biosensor. Glucose oxidase was immobilized into the ZnO:Co nanocluster-assembled thin film through Nafion-assisted cross-linking technique. Due to the high specific active sites and high electrocatalytic activity of the ZnO:Co nanoclusters, the constructed glucose biosensor showed a high sensitivity of 13.3 microA/mA cm2. The low detection limit was estimated to be 20 microM (S/N=3) and the apparent Michaelis-Menten constant was found to be 21 mM, indicating the high affinity of the enzyme on ZnO:Co nanoclusters to glucose. The results show that the ZnO:Co nanocluster-assembled thin films with nanoporous structure and nanocrystallites have potential applications as platforms to immobilize enzyme in biosensors.

Abstract
Thalassemia is one of the most common monogenic disorders in the world. In order to develop a community-based prevention program, we screened 12,900 individuals for alpha- and beta-thalassemia in Baise City, Guangxi, China, with hematological methods and molecular assays. We found that the frequency of carriers in this area for alpha-thalassemia is 15%. Beta-thalassemia carriers comprise 4.8% of the populations. Five mutations account for 98% of alpha-thalassemia [--SEA 46.7%; -alpha/4.2, 23.9%; -alpha/3.7, 21.7%; hemoglobin (Hb) Constant Spring, 6.5%; Hb Quong Sze, 1.1%]. Seven mutations in the beta-globin gene account for 99% of the mutations [codon (CD) 41/42 (-TCTT) (39.4%), CD 17(A-->T) (32%), CD 71/72 (+A) (7.4%), -28 (A-->G) (5.8%), IVS-2-654 (C-->T) (5.8%), CD26 (Hb E) (4%), IVS-1 (G-->A) (3.7%), and CD 43(G-->T) (1.9%)]. Most individuals with alpha-thalassemia major die in the uterus or shortly after birth. Among 106 patients with beta-thalassemia major followed by our clinic, the majority died before 5 years of age. Knowledge surveys about thalassemia were conducted. Our results show a severe lack of knowledge about thalassemia in both medical professionals and in the general populations. This study shows that thalassemia is a very severe public health issue in minority populations in Baise City, China. Identification of the common mutations will allow us to design cost-effective molecular tests. There is an urgent need to educate the general population and the medical community for a successful community-based prevention program.

Abstract
The aging population is placing increasing pressure on healthcare services around the world. Telemedicine, which provides medical information or healthcare services at a distance using telecommunication technologies, is of growing interest to governments and healthcare providers. Existing telemedicine systems are primarily for medical information sharing and consultation with no teleoperation capabilities for activity monitoring. Moreover, the equipment of most systems available to support older patients to stay in their living environment must be tied to a fixed location, which severely limits their feasibility and applicability. In this paper, a new telemedicine structure is introduced for regular and ad hoc health monitoring services. In particular, it aims at scenarios where frequent interactive contacts between patients and professionals are required. This system incorporates several different networking technologies that work harmoniously to facilitate data communication, which potentially have a profound impact on the method of delivering medical service remotely. Another unique characteristic of the developed system is its capabilities of adaptation to network conditions, such as network congestion and availability of bandwidth. The concept of the proposed structure is validated using a laboratory-based test platform with some pilot experiments. Preliminary results demonstrate its feasibility for remote health monitoring services of the elderly. The potential benefits of the system are also presented.

Abstract
Human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-G has been postulated as an important immunotolerant molecule in maintaining fetal-maternal relationship. Recent reports indicated that the 14-bp deletion/insertion polymorphism in exon 8 of HLA-G gene influences HLA-G mRNA stability and isoform splicing patterns, thus modulating the levels of HLA-G expression. This might play an immunomodulatory role of HLA-G during implantation and pregnancy. In the present study, 109 unrelated fertile control women and 79 women who had experienced recurrent spontaneous abortion (RSA) were genotyped for the 14-bp insertion/deletion polymorphism. No significant difference was observed in the distribution of 14-bp insertion/deletion genotype between controls and the RSA group. However, a greater number of 14-bp insertion alleles exist in the RSA group than in the controls.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to investigate the antitumor effect of antisense telomerase oligodeoxynucleotides to endometrial cancer cells in vitro and in vivo. Antisense oligodeoxynucleotides (ODNs) against the human telomerase transcripatse (hTERT) synthesized to serve as telomerase inhibitors. Reverse transcription–polymerase chain reaction and 3-[4,5-dimethylthiazol-2yl]-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay were used to test the expression of hTERT messengerRNA (mRNA) and inhibition of cell proliferation in vitro. In vivo, antitumor effects of ODNs or combined with cisplatin were evaluated in endometrial cancer xenograft. Telomerase activity was tested by telomeric repeat amplification protocol. Antisense ODNs could inhibit proliferation of human endometrial cancer cells (HEC-1-A) in vitro, and downregulate the expression hTRET mRNA in a dose- and period-dependent manner. The tumor growth inhibitory rate of low- and high-dose ODNs were 34.20% and 89.21%, and combined group was 75.30%. Telomerase activity was downregulated to 87.32% compared to the control in the ODNs-treated xenograft tumors. Antisense oligonucleotides of hTERT effectively inhibit the growth of endometrial cancer cell line. Telomerase inhibitor might be a new strategy for chemotherapy or chemoprevention in endometrial cancer.

Abstract
Pre-eclampsia is a multisystem disorder of pregnancy and remains the leading cause of both maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality in many countries. Despite extensive studies, the underlying mechanisms still remain unknown. Besides its restricted expression in the tissues of placenta and its function in regulating immune suppression and in ensuring successful invasion of placental tissues into maternal deciduas, it has been postulated that HLA-G may play a role in modulation of immune tolerance at the fetal-maternal interface. Aberrant HLA-G expression may result in pregnancy disorders that are associated with poor invasion of extravillous cytotrophoblast into maternal spiral arteries, such as pre-eclampsia. Studies have shown that pre-eclampsia is largely under genetic control, but genetic mechanisms underlying the disorder have yet to be determined. In the current study, we focus on the potential role of HLA-G polymorphism in the pathogenesis of pre-eclampsia. Samples were obtained from Chinese Han primiparous women with pre-eclampsia and irrelative normal women, and case-matched placentas were genotyped for the HLA-G polymorphism in the exons 2, 3, and 4, and the 14-base-pair (bp) insertion/deletion polymorphism in the 3'-untranslated region of exon 8 was analyzed separately. The frequency of HLA-G polymorphism in these samples was not significantly different from those of normal controls, indicating that maternal HLA-G polymorphism is not associated with the risk for pre-eclampsia in this Chinese Han population. However, the maternal 14-bp insertion/deletion polymorphism is ethnically different.
