Abstract
Dialysis in newborns and infants is a very challenging field in pediatric nephrology and still associated with high mortality. This article is designed for pediatricians who advise parents of newborns with renal failure. It aims to provide information about the difficulties during the period of dialysis and outcome after successful transplantation. We report upon five patients who proceeded to end-stage renal failure within the first year of life. All patients received peritoneal dialysis; however, two had to be switched to hemodialysis for several months. Four patients received percutaneous endoscopic gastric tubes (PEG) to enable high caloric diet. At the age of 1.5 to 5 years all children were successfully transplanted achieving good renal function. With regard to severe complications, hospitalisation time and somatic development all patients showed a substantial improvement after renal transplantation. Growth velocity increased to above SDS +2 after transplantation and all children reached the milestones of development in due time. In conclusion, after renal replacement therapy is initialised in infants with end-stage renal failure, sufficient nutrition to improve weight gain and to achieve the earliest possible transplantation is mandatory. Early transplantation results in a catch-up of developmental delay in short time.

Abstract
Microscopic investigations of UV-induced formation of laser damage on LiB(3)O(5) optical surfaces during long-term sum-frequency generation (SFG) uncovers a significant growth of a SiO(2)-amorphous layer spatially limited to the illuminated area. The layer gives rise to a catastrophic break-down of the LiB(3)O(5)-output surface upon long-term laser operation even at intensities far below the laser-induced damage threshold. The interaction of UV laser light, LiB(3)O(5) surface and foreign atoms in the ambient atmosphere is discussed in the frame of a two-step process for surface-damage formation.

Abstract
Transylvania's ethnic mosaic is composed of Romanians, German Saxons and Hungarians. The ethnic groups of the Hungarian minority that settled in Romania show differences in dialects, customs and religious affiliations. In this study entire mtDNA control region sequences from 360 individuals of Hungarian ethnicity from two populations (the Csángó and the Székely), settled in the historical region of Transylvania in Romania, were generated and analyzed following high quality sequencing standards. Phylogenetic analyses were used for haplogroup determination, quasi-median network analyses were applied for the visualization of character conflicts, and median joining reconstructions were used for depicting haplotype structures. Affiliation of haplotypes to major west Eurasian haplogroups was confirmed using coding region SNPs. Gene flow between the two populations was low and biased towards a higher migration rate from the Csángó to the Székely than vice versa. Phylogeographic analyses revealed effects of genetic isolation within the Csángó population, which is, in its genetic structure, clearly different from the Székely population. The pronounced genetic divergence between the two populations is in sharp contrast to the expectation of high genetic similarity due to the close geographic proximity of their native homelands. The population data will be incorporated in the EMPOP database (http://www.empop.org).

Abstract
Observations are reported for the first time of significant nondipole effects in the photoionization of the outer-valence orbitals of diatomic molecules. Measured nondipole angular-distribution parameters for the 3sigma(g), 1pi(u), and 2sigma(u) shells of N2 exhibit spectral variations with incident photon energies from thresholds to approximately 200 eV which are attributed via concomitant calculations to particular final-state symmetry waves arising from (E1)multiply sign in circle(M1,E2) radiation-matter interactions first-order in photon momentum. Comparisons with previously reported K-edge studies in N2 verify linear scaling with photon momentum, accounting in part for the significantly enhanced nondipole behavior observed in inner-shell ionization at correspondingly higher momentum values in this molecule.

Abstract
To understand the function of highly complex eukaryotic tissues like the human brain, in depth knowledge about cellular protein networks is required. Biomolecular interaction analysis (BIA), as a part of functional proteomics, aims to quantify interaction patterns within a protein network in detail. We used the cAMP dependent protein kinase (PKA) as a model system for the binding analysis between small natural ligands, cAMP and cAMP analogues, with their physiological interaction partner, the regulatory subunit of PKA. BIA comprises a variety of methods based on physics, biochemistry and molecular biology. Here we compared side by side real time SPR (surface plasmon resonance, Biacore), a bead based assay (AlphaScreen), a fluorescence based method (Fluorescence polarisation) and ITC (isothermal titration calorimetry). These in vitro methods were complemented by an in cell reporter assay, BRET(2) (bioluminescence resonance energy transfer), allowing to test the effects of cAMP analogues in living cells.

Abstract
Cervical teratomas are extremely rare tumours. Surgery of these mostly benign malformations is very challenging for a multidisciplinary team. A single case of a newborn, who was imminently prenatally diagnosed with a neck mass, is presented. After delivery the patient was transferred to neonatal intensive care unit and intubation was performed. A rapid growth of the mass required early surgery and removal of the neck mass was performed on the third day post delivery. Histological investigation showed an immature teratoma. The postoperative period was complicated by hypothyroidism. Due to severe laryngo-tracheomalacia tracheostomy was required when the baby was 2 weeks old. Further development has been without any sign of recurrence (12 months). On the basis of this case differential diagnosis, therapy and outcome is discussed.

Abstract
We investigated 15 polymorphic short tandem repeat (STR) loci (D1S1656, D7S1517, D8S306, D8S639, D9S304, D10S2325, D11S488, D12S391, D14S608, D16S3253, D17S976, D18S1270, D19S253, D20S161, and D21S1437) which are not included in the standard sets of forensic loci. The markers were selected according to the complexity of the polymorphic region: Of the 15 investigated loci, 7 loci showed a simple repeat structure (D9S304, D10S2325, D14S608, D16S3253, D18S1270, D19S253, and D21S1437), 3 loci (D7S1517, D12S391, and D20S161) consisted of compound repeat units, and 5 loci (D1S1656, D8S306, D8S639, D11S488, and D17S976) showed a more complex polymorphic region partly including different repeat blocks and incomplete repeat units, which resulted in a relatively high proportion of intermediate alleles. A population study on a sample of 270 unrelated persons from Austria was carried out. We did not observe significant deviations from Hardy-Weinberg expectations. The combined probability of exclusion for the 15 loci was 0.99999998. In combination with the conventional set of STR markers included in commercially available kits (no linkage was observed between these 15 loci and the Powerplex 16 System loci), these markers are approved as highly discriminating forensic tools, also suitable for the analysis of difficult paternity and kinship constellations.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hydrochlorothiazide (HCT) is applied in the therapy of familial hypomagnesaemia with hypercalciuria and nephrocalcinosis (FHHNC) caused by claudin-16 (CLDN16) mutation. However, the short-term efficacy of HCT to reduce hypercalciuria in FHHNC has not yet been demonstrated in a clinical trial. METHODS Four male and four female patients with FHHNC and CLDN16 mutation, under long-standing HCT therapy (0.4-1.2 mg/kg, median 0.9 mg/kg, dose according to calciuria), aged 0.7-22.4 years, were included in a clinical study to investigate the effect of HCT on calciuria. The study design consisted of three periods: continued therapy for 4 weeks, HCT withdrawal for 6 weeks and restart of therapy at the same dose for 4 weeks. Calciuria and magnesiuria were assessed weekly as Ca/creat and Mg/creat ratio, every 2 weeks in 24 h urine, and serum Mg, K and kaliuria (s-Mg, s-K and K/creat) at weeks 0, 6, 10 and 14. The data of each study period were averaged and analysed by Friedman and Wilcoxon test. RESULTS Ca/creat was significantly reduced by HCT (median before/at/after withdrawal 0.76/1.24/0.77 mol/mol creat; n = 8, P<0.05). The reduction of Ca/24 h by HCT was not statistically significant (0.13/0.19/0.13 mmol/kg x 24 h; n = 5). Serum Mg (0.51/0.64/0.56 mmol/l; n = 8, P<0.05) and Serum K (3.65/4.35/3.65 mmol/l; n = 8, P<0.05) were significantly higher during withdrawal. However, Mg/creat (0.98/0.90/0.90 mol/mol creat; n = 8), Mg/24 h (0.14/0.12/0.18 mmol/kg x 24h; n = 5) and K/creat (6.3/8.4/6.2 mol/mol creat; n = 8) remained statistically unchanged during withdrawal. CONCLUSIONS We demonstrated that HCT is effective in reducing hypercalciuria due to CLDN16 mutation on a short-term basis. However, the efficacy of HCT to attenuate disease progression remains to be elucidated.

Abstract
Classical swine fever (CSF) is a notifiable disease of domestic pigs and wild boar. It is caused by the highly contagious CSF virus and in its acute form the disease generally results in high morbidity and mortality. Due to the great economical impact an outbreak can cause to the pig industry it is one of the most important swine diseases worldwide. To limit the damage in the case of a new outbreak it is necessary to identify the virus as fast as possible. This information helps epidemiologists to trace the origin of the virus and to follow the virus spread. Genetic typing revealed that CSF virus genotypes, subgroups and types show a regional distribution making it an important tool for epidemiologists. Meanwhile, besides epidemiological data and nucleotide sequences from European isolates, information from isolates from South- and Central America, the Caribbean, Asia and recently from South Africa have become available. The data are stored in a database in the EU Reference Laboratory for CSF, accessible by the WWW (http://viro08.tiho-hanno ver.de). A new module was implemented that allows efficient automated genotyping.
