Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE To investigate the feasibility of acellular bovine pericardium (BP) for guided bone regeneration (GBR) in vitro and in vivo. The success of GBR relies on the fact that various cellular components possess different migration rates into the defect site and that a barrier membrane plays a significant role in these processes. MATERIAL AND METHODS BP membrane was isolated and decellularized using an enzymatic method. The microarchitecture, mechanical properties, cytotoxicity and cell chemotaxis properties of the acellular BP were evaluated in vitro, and the in-vivo efficacy of the acellular BP was also investigated in a rabbit mandibular model. RESULTS The acellular BP membrane possessed an interconnected fibrous structure. Glutaraldehyde (GA) treatment was efficient for enhancement of the mechanical properties of the acellular BP bur and resulted in negligible cytotoxicity. After 16 wk, standardized osseous defects created in the rabbit mandible, and covered with acellular BP, were associated with an enhanced deposition of mineralized tissue when compared with defects left to spontaneous healing. CONCLUSION GA-treated acellular BP is promising as a barrier membrane for GBR for further in-vivo and clinical studies.

Abstract
AIM Biomarkers have been utilized for prognosis in colorectal cancer; however, relatively few have been identified. We compared the prognostic value of serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT) with carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) and carbohydrate antigen 19-9 (CA19-9) in patients with metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC). METHOD Blood samples were collected from 239 patients with mCRC presenting between 2005 and 2010 in the Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center. RESULTS CEA (P < 0.001), CA19-9 (P < 0.001), GGT (P < 0.001), ALP (P < 0.001) and LDH (P = 0.001) were statistically significant prognostic factors of overall survival (OS). CEA (P = 0.002) and GGT (P = 0.021) were validated as independent predictors. On univariate analysis, CEA (P = 0.003), CA19-9 (P = 0.006), GGT (P < 0.001) and ALP (P = 0.001) were statistically significant predictive factors of progression-free survival (PFS) in patients having first-line chemotherapy. CEA (P = 0.011) and GGT (P = 0.027) were independent predictors. GGT (P = 0.001), ALP (P = 0.016) and LDH (P = 0.039) levels were correlated with the tumour response rate assessed by CT, whilst CEA (P = 0.724) and CA19-9 (P = 0.822) were not. There was a statistically significant difference in OS (P < 0.001) and PFS (P < 0.001) among patients who had elevations of both CEA and GGT compared with those in whom only one or neither was elevated. CONCLUSION Among GGT, LDH and ALP, only GGT plays an independent role with CEA in predicting OS and PFS in mCRC. When coupled with CEA, GGT may lead to improved prognostic predictors.

Guanosine promotes proliferation of neural stem cells through cAMP-CREB pathway. J BIOL REG HOMEOS AG 2013; 27:673-680. Abstract
In previous studies, we have found that extracellular guanosine can stimulate endogenous progenitor/stem cell proliferation in the spinal cord following chronic injury and in the subventricular zone of the brains of rats afflicted with Parkinson's Disease. In this study, using neural stem cells isolated from one-day old rats, we found that guanosine could stimulate neural stem cell proliferation, and that the proliferation was not due to the guanosine metabolism mechanism since guanine, which is interconverted by an ecto-purine nucleoside phosphorylase from guanosine, has no stimulating effect on the proliferation of neural stem cells. We determined that second messenger cAMP was involved in the pathway as results showed that 100 microM guanosine stimulated cAMP accumulation. Using western blot analysis, we found that 100 microM guanosine can activate the phosphorylation of CREB without changing the total amount of CREB. In conclusion, guanosine can stimulate neural stem cell proliferation, and the cAMP-CREB pathway is involved in this biological effect.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Posterior communicating artery aneurysms with oculomotor nerve palsy may imply sudden enlargement of the aneurysm sac and have a high risk of rupture. Our aim was to identify the morphologic and hemodynamic parameters in this special period of aneurysm progression and to assess related rupture risk indices. MATERIALS AND METHODS We analyzed the morphologic and hemodynamic parameters of 9 unruptured posterior communicating artery aneurysms with oculomotor nerve palsy and 9 ruptured ones. The morphologic parameters were measured and calculated from patient-specific 3D rotational angiographic images, and pulsatile computational fluid dynamic simulation was then performed for hemodynamic parameters. RESULTS There was no significant statistical difference between the 2 groups in size, aspect ratio, size ratio, aneurysm angle, or vessel angle; analysis only demonstrated a significantly lower wall shear stress of the aneurysm wall in the symptomatic unruptured group in hemodynamics (P = .024), whereas there were no differences in wall shear stress of the parent artery, low wall shear stress area, and oscillatory shear index. CONCLUSIONS From morphologic and hemodynamic perspectives, we demonstrated that posterior communicating artery aneurysms with oculomotor nerve palsy had characteristics similar to those of ruptured ones, except for lower wall shear stress on the aneurysm wall, which might indicate an important role in aneurysm rupture.

Abstract
AIM To evaluate the efficacy of a nonthermal plasma (NTP) at atmospheric pressure on ex vivo biofilm in root canals of extracted teeth. METHODOLOGY Intracanal contents from three teeth with root canal infections were collected, pooled and grown in thirty-five microCT-mapped root canals of extracted and instrumented human teeth. One group of teeth was treated with NTP, another with 6% NaOCl and one set was left untreated. The intracanal contents from twenty-seven teeth (nine teeth in each group) were plated on agar and colony forming units were determined. Parametric test of one-way analysis of variance (anova) was used to analyse statistical significance. The remaining teeth were cut open, stained with LIVE/DEAD(®) and examined with confocal laser scanning microscopy. RESULTS The untreated root canals were covered with biofilm of varying thickness. Treatment with nonthermal plasma decreased the number of viable bacteria in biofilms by one order of magnitude, whilst the NaOCl control achieved a reduction of more than four magnitudes. Both the NTP and the NaOCl treatment results were significantly different from the negative control (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION The nonthermal plasma displayed antimicrobial activity against endodontic biofilms in root canals, but was not as effective as the use of 6% NaOCl.

Abstract
Recently immunoglobulin G (IgG) was found to be produced by neoplasms and promote tumor growth in cancer cell lines and animal models. To investigate the pathophysiological significance of cancer-produced IgG in breast cancer, we examined the expressions of IgG in 68 breast cancers including 40 primary cancers without metastasis and 28 cancers with axillary lymph node metastases. IgG gene expression was detected in all these samples. We found that IgG-expressing cancer cells were predominantly located in the periphery of the primary cancer nest and that these cells showed more cellular atypia and nuclear pleomorphism. We also found that the abundance of IgG-expressing cancer cells was higher and the cells were more evenly distributed in the metastatic cancer cells than that in the primary lesion. These findings suggest that IgG-expressing breast cancer cells have a more aggressive biological behavior than the IgG negative cancer cells and it could be an indicator for progression and metastasis of the disease. Co-localization of IgG and C1q complement was detected in both primary and metastatic lesions implying that immune complexes might be formed in situ. We speculate that such immune complexes might facilitate immune escape of cancer cells. Our findings suggest that locally produced IgG plays important roles in breast cancer, and may serve as a potential therapeutic target.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To outline the characteristics and outcomes of eye injuries in the Chinese People's Liberation Army. METHODS A retrospective review of military inpatient eye injuries, in one military region, population 250,000 soldiers, between January 2006 and December 2010. RESULTS There were 709 eye injury patients (759 eyes) during the 5-year period with an incidence of inpatient eye injuries of 57 per 100,000 person-years. The mean age of patients was 24 years, the vast majority male. The majority of eye injuries occurred during recreational time (62%), with the commonest causing being violence (46%). The immediate post-injury vision acuity of 48% of eyes was > 6/12; 93% of cases had mechanical ocular injuries and 7% had non-mechanical ocular injuries. 71% of patients were sent to an evacuation hospital within 24 hours and 75% had surgery within 24 hours of injury. The majority of cases (97%) were hospitalized for one visit. On discharge, there was a statistically significant improvement in visual outcomes with 85% of eyes achieving > 6/12. CONCLUSIONS Eye injuries secondary to violence were a frequent occurrence amongst young male PLA members, particularly during recreational time. Most injuries were not sight-threatening, with the majority of patients achieving an excellent visual outcome.

Abstract
Several studies have documented cardiovascular effects of apelin, including enhanced inotropy and vasodilation. However, these cardiovascular effects are short lived due to the predicted short circulating half-life of the apelin peptide. To address this limitation of apelin, we pursued N-terminal PEGylation of apelin and examined the cardiovascular effects of the PEGylated apelin. A 40kDa PEG conjugated apelin-36 (PEG-apelin-36) was successfully produced with N-terminal conjugation, high purity (>98%) and minimum reduction of APJ receptor binding affinity. Using an adenylate cyclase inhibition assay, comparable in vitro bioactivity was observed between the PEG-apelin-36 and unmodified apelin-36. In vivo evaluation of the PEG-apelin-36 was performed in normal rats and rats with myocardial infarction (MI). Cardiac function was assessed via echocardiography before, during a 20 min IV infusion and up to 100 min post peptide infusion. Similar increases in cardiac ejection fraction (EF) were observed during the infusion of PEG-apelin-36 and apelin-36 in normal rats. However, animals that received PEG-apelin-36 maintained significantly increased EF over the 100 min post infusion monitoring period compared to the animals that received unmodified apelin-36. Interestingly, EF increases observed with PEG-apelin-36 and apelin-36 were greater in the MI rats. PEG-apelin-36 had a prolonged circulating life compared to apelin-36 in rats. There were no changes in aortic blood pressure when PEG-apelin-36 or apelin-36 was administered. To our knowledge this is the first report of apelin PEGylation and documentation of its cardiovascular effects.

Abstract
Two linkage maps of asparagus (Asparagus officinalis L.) were constructed using a double pseudotestcross mapping strategy with restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLPs), random amplified polymorphic DNAs (RAPDs), and allozymes as markers in a population generated from crossing MW25 x A19, two heterozygous parents. All data were inverted and combined with the natural data to detect linkages in repulsion phase. Two sets of data, one for each parent, were formed according to the inheritance patterns of the markers. The maternal MW25 map has a total of 163 marker loci placed in 13 linkage groups covering 1281 cM, with an average and a maximum distance between adjacent loci of 7.9 and 29 cM, respectively. The paternal A19 map has 183 marker loci covering 1324 cM in 9 linkage groups, with an average and a maximum distance between two adjacent loci of 7.7 and 29 cM, respectively. Six multiallelic RFLPs segregating in the pattern a/c x b/c and eight heterozygous loci (four RAPDs, and four RFLPs segregating in the pattern a/b x a/b (HZ loci)) were common to both maps. These 14 loci were used as bridges to align homologous groups between the two maps. In this case, RFLPs were more frequent and informative than RAPDs. Nine linkage groups in the MW25 map were homologous to six groups in the A19 map. In two cases, two or more bridge loci were common to a group; thus, the orientation of homologous linkage groups was also determined. In four other cases, only one locus was common to the two homologous groups and the orientation was unknown. Mdh, four RFLPs, and 14 RAPDs were assigned to chromosome L5, which also has the sex locus M.

Cisplatin benefit is predicted by immunohistochemical analysis of DNA repair proteins in squamous cell carcinoma but not adenocarcinoma: theranostic modeling by NSCLC constituent histological subclasses. Abstract
BACKGROUND Most non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients receive cisplatin-based chemotherapy though clinical response is restricted to a subset of patients. DNA repair protein levels are possible surrogates for cisplatin-induced DNA adduct (and subsequent cell death) repair efficiency and thus molecular determinants of therapeutic efficacy. The International Adjuvant Lung Trial (IALT)-Bio study previously suggested ERCC1 and MSH2 as predictive of cisplatin-based therapeutic benefit. PATIENTS AND METHODS DNA repair protein expression (XPF, BRCA1, ERCC1, MSH2, p53, PARP1, and ATM) was assessed by immunohistochemistry on a large subset of patients (N = 769) from the IALT trial. Tissue Microarray slides were digitally scanned and signal quantified by user-defined macros. Statistical analyses (univariate and multivariate) of 5-year disease-free survival (DFS) and 5-year overall survival used binary cut-offs (H score low/high expression). RESULTS In patients with squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), ATM, p53, PARP1, ERCC1, and MSH2 displayed significant (borderline) predictive values, mainly on DFS with chemotherapy efficacy limited to low marker levels. Adenocarcinoma (ADC) results were not significant. BRCA1 and XPF were not significant for predictive modeling in either SCC or ADCs. CONCLUSION Here predictive utility of DNA repair enzymes co-segregates with SCC histology, focusing their predictive value to this histological subclass of NSCLC. Distinct mechanisms of chemotherapeutic response or resistance might exist among histological subclasses of solid tumors.

Preservation of biological activity of glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) after microencapsulation and sterilization by gamma irradiation. Int J Pharm 2012; 436:545-54. Abstract
A main issue in controlled delivery of biotechnological products from injectable biodegradable microspheres is to preserve their integrity and functional activity after the microencapsulation process and final sterilization. The present experimental work tested different technological approaches to maintain the biological activity of an encapsulated biotechnological product within PLGA [poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid)] microspheres (MS) after their sterilization by gamma irradiation. GDNF (glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor), useful in the treatment of several neurodegenerative diseases, was chosen as a labile model protein. In the particular case of optic nerve degeneration, GDNF has been demonstrated to improve the damaged retinal ganglion cells (RGC) survival. GDNF was encapsulated in its molecular state by the water-in-oil-in-water (W/O/W) technique or as solid according to the solid-in-oil-in-water (S/O/W) method. Based on the S/O/W technique, GDNF was included in the PLGA microspheres alone (S/O/W 1) or in combination with an antioxidant (vitamin E, Vit E) (S/O/W 2). Microspheres were sterilized by gamma-irradiation (dose of 25 kGy) at room and low (-78 °C) temperatures. Functional activity of GDNF released from the different microspheres was evaluated both before and after sterilization in their potential target cells (retinal cells). Although none of the systems proposed achieved with the goal of totally retain the structural stability of the GDNF-dimer, the protein released from the S/O/W 2 microspheres was clearly the most biologically active, showing significantly less retinal cell death than that released from either W/O/W or S/O/W 1 particles, even in low amounts of the neurotrophic factor. According to the results presented in this work, the biological activity of biotechnological products after microencapsulation and sterilization can be further preserved by the inclusion of the active molecule in its solid state in combination with antioxidants and using low temperature (-78 °C) during gamma irradiation exposure.

Abstract
Ion irradiation experiments and atomistic simulations were used to demonstrate that irradiation-induced lattice swelling in a complex oxide, Lu2Ti2O7, is due initially to the formation of cation antisite defects. X-ray diffraction revealed that cation antisite formation correlates directly with lattice swelling and indicates that the volume per antisite pair is approximately 12 Å3. First principles calculations revealed that lattice swelling is best explained by cation antisite defects. Temperature accelerated dynamics simulations indicate that cation Frenkel defects are metastable and decay to form antisite defects.

Abstract
A rare case of traumatic carotid-cavernous fistula caused by an intradural internal carotid artery pseudoaneurysm arising from the intradural internal carotid artery is described. The presentation was similar to that of carotid-cavernous fistulae, with ocular pain, chemosis and proptosis being the common symptoms. The patient was successfully treated by transarterial coil and Onyx-34 embolization. A 40-year-old man presented with severe injury, including multiple fractures of ribs, clavicle scapula and blind left eye. He gradually recovered and was discharged after intensive treatment in a local hospital. But about 70 days after discharge, his left eye became gradually chemotic and he felt a pulsatile bruit in his left ear. A CT scan and DSA confirmed a large intradural pseudoaneurysm and the associated carotid-cavernous fistula. Angiography revealed a fistula between the intradural aneurysm and the cavernous sinus. The origin of the aneurysm was above the posterior communicating artery. The aneurysm was successfully obliterated with detachable coils and Onyx-34 with the protection of a Hyperglide balloon. Subsequent studies demonstrated no flow through the fistula and good opacification of the ipsilateral internal cerebral artery system. Intradural pseudoaneurysm associated with carotid-cavernous fistula is a rare sequel of trauma. It may be treated successfully with the use of transarterial coil and Onyx embolization.

Abstract
To evaluate the single-centre experience with endovascular management of direct carotid-cavernous sinus fistulas (DCCF). Between November 2008 and November 2010, a total of 14 patients (11 males) with direct carotid-cavernous sinus fistula underwent 16 transarterial treatment sessions. The patient files and angiograms were analysed retrospectively. Clinical signs and symptoms included exophthalmos [n=12, (85.7%)], pulsatile tinnitus [n=9, (64.3%)], cranial nerve III or VI palsy [n=2, (14.3%)], and impaired vision [n=1, (7.1%)]. Angiography revealed in addition cortical drainage in five patients (35.7%). Transarterial embolization was performed using detachable balloon in nine sessions (56.2%), detachable coils in three sessions (18.8%) and a combination with Onyx in four sessions (25%). Complete interruption of the arteriovenous shunt was achieved in all patients. There was a tendency for ocular pressure-related symptoms to resolve rapidly, while cranial nerve palsy and diplopia improved slowly (7.1%) or did not change (7.1%). The patient with visual impairment recovered within the first two weeks after endovascular treatment. After complete interruption of the arteriovenous shunt, two (12.5%) recurrences were observed in balloon treatment and retreatment was given. Transarterial management is a highly efficient and safe treatment in DCCFs. In the majority of patients a significant and permanent improvement in clinical signs and symptoms can be achieved.

Abstract
We report on the predictors of seizure presention in unruptured brain arteriovenous malformations (AVMs). Between 1999 and 2008, 302 consecutive patients with AVMs were referred to our institution for endovascular treatment. Seventy-four patients (24.5%) experienced seizures without hemorrhage before treatment. We tested for statistical associations between angioarchitectural characteristics and seizure presentation. When we compared the 74 patients with seizures without hemorrhage with the 228 patients who did not experience seizures initially (total of 302 patients), male sex, cortical AVM location, AVM size of more than 3 cm, superficial venous drainage and presence of varices in the venous drainage were statistically associated with seizures (P=0.016, P=0.002, P=0.022, P=0.005, and P=0.022, respectively). Posterior fossa and deep locations and coexisting aneurysms were statistically associated with no seizures. The angioarchitectural characteristics of AVM associated with seizure presentation include male sex, cortical AVM location, AVM size of more than 3 cm, superficial venous drainage and presence of varices in the venous drainage.

Abstract
The insidious flower bug, Orius insidiosus (Say) (Heteroptera: Anthocoridae) is an important surrogate species for assessing potential effects of plant-incorporated protectants (PIPs) on nontarget heterotrophic predators. In this study, a continuous dietary exposure system was optimized by assessing the effect of diet composition and age on the survival and development of nymphs of O. insidiosus. Greater than 85% control survival and an acceptable rate of development from nymph hatching to adult was achieved using 5-d-old nymphs at test initiation and a bee pollen-based diet supplemented with 25% Ephestia eggs. There was an unacceptable level of mortality (>40%) and/or a significantly prolonged development time when nymphs were <5 d old at test initiation. When 5-d-old nymphs were fed a bee pollen diet containing 25% Ephestia eggs and 100 μg/g potassium arsenate, time-dependent mortality was observed with a median lethal time (LT50) of 4.4 d and 100% mortality was observed after 10 d of feeding, indicating the effectiveness of the test system to detect adverse effects by dietary exposure. It is recommended that well-defined 5-d-old nymphs and an encapsulated bee pollen-based diet containing 25% ground Ephestia eggs be used in a Tier-I dietary feeding exposure assay for detecting potential effects of PIPs on O. insidiosus nymphs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Transanal surgery using an endoscopic linear stapler is a recognized, but not widely performed technique for the treatment of obstructed defecation syndrome (ODS). A study of consecutive patients was conducted to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of the technique for the treatment of ODS in Chinese patients. METHODS From November 2008 to December 2010, 43 female patients with ODS caused by rectocele and/or rectal intussusception underwent transanal surgery using an endoscopic linear stapler in three Chinese hospitals. Clinical and functional data including the Wexner constipation score and outcome classification were analyzed retrospectively. RESULTS The average duration of surgery was 23 ± 4 min (range 15-30 min). Blood loss was 10 ± 2 ml (range 5-15 ml). The average postoperative hospital stay was 5 days (range 4-6 days). The pathologic findings showed that the specimen contained rectal muscle in all patients. Postoperative complications included 4 patients with transient fecal urgency, 3 patients with anorectal pain, and one patient with mild bleeding from the stapled suture line. Three patients reported minor fecal incontinence (Wexner score less than 3). During a median follow-up of 12 months (range, 3-26 months), the mean constipation score improved from preoperative 13.56 to postoperative 5.07 at 1 year (P < 0.05). The outcome at 1 year was excellent in 18 of 43 patients, good in 13, fairly good in 7, and poor in 5. Postoperative defecography was performed in 28 patients. Rectocele disappeared in 15 patients. Rectocele depth was reduced from 34 ± 4 mm preoperatively to 17 ± 3 mm postoperatively (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION The transanal procedure using an endoscopic linear stapler is an easy, safe, and effective option for selected patients with ODS. Long-term prospective, randomized, controlled studies are needed to confirm the advantages of this procedure in comparison with the traditional transanal and stapled transanal rectal resection (STARR) techniques.

The miRNA-17∼92 cluster mediates chemoresistance and enhances tumor growth in mantle cell lymphoma via PI3K/AKT pathway activation. Leukemia 2011; 26:1064-72. Abstract
The median survival of patients with mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) ranges from 3 to 5 years with current chemotherapeutic regimens. A common secondary genomic alteration detected in MCL is chromosome 13q31-q32 gain/amplification, which targets a microRNA (miRNA) cluster, miR-17∼92. On the basis of gene expression profiling, we found that high level expression of C13orf25, the primary transcript from which these miRNAs are processed, was associated with poorer survival in patients with MCL (P=0.021). We demonstrated that the protein phosphatase PHLPP2, an important negative regulator of the PI3K/AKT pathway, was a direct target of miR-17∼92 miRNAs, in addition to PTEN and BIM. These proteins were down-modulated in MCL cells with overexpression of the miR-17∼92 cluster. Overexpression of miR-17∼92 activated the PI3K/AKT pathway and inhibited chemotherapy-induced apoptosis in MCL cell lines. Conversely, inhibition of miR-17∼92 expression suppressed the PI3K/AKT pathway and inhibited tumor growth in a xenograft MCL mouse model. Targeting the miR-17∼92 cluster may therefore provide a novel therapeutic approach for patients with MCL.

Abstract
This paper analyzes the success of endovascular management of ruptured and unruptured vertebral artery aneurysms. Sixty-three patients with 65 vertebral (both acute dissection and chronic larger aneurysms are included) treated at our hospital form the basis of the analysis. Clinical outcome was evaluated using the modified Rankin Scale. Angiographic follow-up data was obtained for 44 patients (69.8%) for periods ranging from three to 16 months (mean, eight months). Based on the Hunt and Hess grading scale, the patient population included 34 patients (54.0%) with unruptured aneurysms, 28 (44.4%) with Grade 1 aneurysms, one (1.6%) with Grade 2 aneurysms. The locations of the aneurysms included 25 (38.5%) at the distal to posterior inferior cerebellar artery (PICA), 22 (33.8%) at the proximal to PICA and 18 (27.7%) at the vertebral artery-posterior inferior cerebellar artery (VA-PICA). Of the 63 patients, 12 (19%) were women and 51 (81%) were men. The mean age at treatment was 41.7 years (range, six-77 yrs). Follow-up angiograms were obtained in 44 (69.8%) out of 63 patients. Complete or virtually complete thrombosis was confirmed on early posttreatment angiography in 39 (88.6%) out of 44 patients. A slight reduction in the size of the lesion was noted in three patients and there was a significant residual lesion in two (4.5%) patients. Clinical follow-up revealed 90.5% patients in the mRS 0-2 category, 4.8% patients in the mRS>2 category, and 4.8% patients had died (mRS 6). Three patients died of rebleeding (n=1) or progressive mass effect/brainstem ischemia (n=2). Ruptured and unruptured aneurysms of the vertebral artery can be well treated using endovascular techniques, overall long-term results were good in 90.5% of patients.

Abstract
Schizophrenia (SZ) is characterized by a variety of complex positive, negative and cognitive symptoms that are differentially expressed in individual patients. Variability in symptom presentation indicates that multiple genes, many involved in neurodevelopment, contribute to the etiology of SZ. The myelin transcription factor 1-like (MYT1L) gene encodes the MYT1L protein that participates in several neurodevelopment pathways. The copy number variant of MYT1L gene is associated with SZ, and single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of MYT1L contribute to major depressive disorder. To explore the association of MYT1L polymorphisms with SZ, we examined six SNPs of MYT1L in a Han Chinese population consisting of 528 paranoid schizophrenic patients and 528 healthy subjects. Our results showed that rs17039584 was significantly associated with SZ (A>G), even after Bonferroni correction. When subjects were divided by gender, the rs10190125 allele and genotype remained significantly associated with SZ in female patients. Moreover, we found that rs6742365 was associated with a family history of SZ in females. Other SNPs did not achieve statistical significance for SZ but were associated with individual phenotypes, as measured by the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) inventory. Our findings suggest that MYT1L may represent a susceptibility gene for SZ in the Han Chinese population and show that a specific SNP may increase susceptibility in females.

Abstract
Type I interferons (IFN) are important mediators of the host defence against viruses through binding to the cell surface receptors, among which the binding to type I IFN receptor 2 (IFNAR2) is the very first step initiating a complex signal transduction cascade. By using RT-PCR and 5' RACE approaches, we obtained porcine IFNAR2 cDNA, the nucleotide identity of its coding region is 57.53%, 67.45%, 74.07% and 74.63% to those of mouse, human, sheep and cattle, respectively; and the deduced protein of which shares 38.18%, 55.29%, 62.01% and 63.39% identity to those of mouse, human, sheep and cattle, respectively. The genomic structure of porcine IFNAR2 gene consists of nine exons and eight introns. Porcine IFNAR2 mRNA expression was detected in all tissues examined, being strong in the spleen, small intestine, cerebrum and uterus tissues and relatively weak in the stomach tissues. As compared with piglets, the expression of IFNAR2 mRNA was significantly higher in both liver and spleen of Laiwu adult pigs (P < 0.01); in Duroc pigs, however, significantly higher IFNAR2 mRNA expression was only found in adult liver (P < 0.05). In Duroc × Landrace × Yorkshire commercial pigs infected with porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV), the expression of IFNAR2 mRNA in lung tissue was significantly down-regulated as compared to uninfected ones (P < 0.05).

Abstract
Posterior cerebral aneurysms are rare vascular lesions and usually present as non-saccular or dissecting in nature. We present a retrospective review of our experience in the deliberate parent artery occlusion of posterior cerebral artery (PCA) aneurysms. From June 2006 to June 2010, 12 patients (seven men, five women) with posterior cerebral artery non-saccular aneurysms presented to our department and were treated by parent artery occlusion. There were eight (66.7%) aneurysms located at the P2 segment, two (16.7%) at the P2-3 junction, one (8.3%) at the P1-2 junction and one (8.3%) at the P3 segment. Ten of the 12 patients were treated by aneurysm together with parent artery occlusion and two were treated by proximal occlusion. The procedure was technically successful in all cases. Angiography was performed immediately after the procedure in all patients and showed occlusion of the parent vessel with no filling of the aneurysm. Only one patient (8.3%) developed procedure-related transient hemianopsia and recovered within one month. The other 11 patients showed no additional neurological symptoms after procedure. Deliberate parent artery occlusion by detachable coils appears to be well tolerated for P2 or distal segment of PCA in our limited case series. We propose that this technique could be a good treatment option in treating non-saccular aneurysms in this location.

Abstract
T-SPOT®.TB and the tuberculin skin test (TST) were used to screen for latent tuberculosis infection among 899 Chinese college students. The positivity rates for T-SPOT®.TB and TST were respectively 13.0% (95% confidence interval [CI] 10.4-15.9) and 24.9% (95%CI 21.5-28.6) among students with a bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) scar (agreement of both tests 72.3%; 95%CI 68.6-75.8; κ = 0.118), and respectively 17.3% (95%CI 11.7-24.2) and 23.7% (95%CI 17.3-31.2) among those without a BCG scar (agreement 73.1%; 95%CI 65.4-79.9; κ = 0.179). These results demonstrate low agreement between the TST and T-SPOT.TB in the Chinese population studied.

Abstract
A 34-year-old man admitted to another hospital presented with sudden onset of headache. The CT scan was unremarkable, but magnetic resonance angiography revealed a fusiform aneurysm in the left vertebral artery. Six days later, the patient was sent to our institution for further diagnosis and treatment. Cerebral angiography confirmed a fusiform aneurysm located in the right vertebral artery. At first, we placed a neuroform-3 stent and could see contrast medium stasis in the aneurysm, so we did not fill coils into the aneurysm. Four months later, the patient was admitted for rechecking. DSA showed the aneurysm remained and we placed a LEO stent in the lumen of the Neuroform stent. A control DSA eight months later showed the aneurysm had almost healed. Overlapping stents may induce spontaneous thrombosis of vertebral artery aneurysms and facilitate parent artery reconstruction through flow remodeling and stent endothelialization. This technique may be an option in treating dissecting or fusiform intracranial aneurysms that are not amenable to open surgical treatment or endovascular coil embolization.

Abstract
Interferon gamma receptor (IFNGR) plays an important role in the biological effects of IFN-γ. In this study, porcine IFNGR1 cDNA was cloned and two transcripts both having a coding region of 1413 bp were identified. Porcine IFNGR1 cDNA shares 62.95%, 63.73%, 72.90% and 81.10% identity in nucleotide sequence; and 45.64%, 46.69%, 58.04% and 72.55% homology in amino acid sequence to those of rat, mouse, human and cattle, respectively. The porcine IFNGR1 genomic structure consists of seven exons and six introns and is located on porcine chromosome 1. The mRNA expression of porcine IFNGR1 gene is detected in all tissues examined, with strong expression in spleen and liver tissues and weak expression in cerebrum, cerebellum and uterus tissues, respectively. A different developmental pattern in IFNGR1 mRNA expression between Laiwu and Duroc breeds was revealed by real-time quantitative RT-PCR: in Duroc pigs, a significantly higher expression was found in the tissues of heart (P<0.05), liver (P<0.01), kidney (P<0.01) and skeletal muscle (P<0.05) of adult pigs compared to piglets. In porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV)-infected Dapulian pigs, compared to the uninfected ones, the expression level of IFNGR1 mRNA in spleen was significantly up-regulated (P<0.05), whereas its expression in the lymph node was significantly down-regulated (P<0.05); in PRRSV-infected Duroc × Yorkshire × Landrace commercial pigs, however, the differences both in spleen and lymph node tissues were not significant.

Abstract
We describe a patient with a P1 aneurysm of the posterior cerebral artery (PCA) with diabetes insipidus (DI) caused by traumatic brain injury. A 21-year-old woman presented with epidural hematoma, left temporal contusion and subarachnoid hemorrhage caused by head trauma. DI occurred with normal anterior hypophyseal function on the second day after admission and cerebral angiography demonstrated an aneurysm at the right P1 portion after one month. DI was treated with administration of desmopressin and the aneurysm and P1 portion of the right PCA were occluded completely. After three months, her DI recovered and decompressin was discontinued. The six month follow-up angiogram confirmed cure of the P1 aneurysm. P1 aneurysm and DI can be caused by traumatic brain injury. Cranial DI caused by head injury with perturbations in water balance may be transitory and resolve.

Abstract
Endovascular stent placement combined with coil embolization is an established procedure for the treatment of intracranial aneurysms. We describe lesion outcome using stents for the treatment of intracranial aneurysms. Sixty-nine patients (30 females and 39 males; age range 12-78 years) treated with stent placement at Beijing Tiantan Hospital over a six-year period. Seventy- six cerebral aneurysms were encountered and 74 lesions were treated with 79 stents. Outcome was evaluated using the Glasgow Outcome Scale (GOS) score during a mean follow-up period of 32 months. Of the 74 stented aneurysms, 34 (45.9%) were located in the anterior circulation and 40 (54.1%) in the posterior circulation. Forty-eight (64.9%) aneurysms were small and 26 (35.1%) were large or giant. In 67 (90.5%) aneurysms embolization was completed by packing the aneurysm sac with platinum coils. In five small fusiform and four saccular aneurysms, the stent was used alone. Six procedure-related complications were observed and a cause of death in 7.2% of the patients. Follow-up angiography obtained at three months to one year in 68 (91.9%) aneurysms demonstrated complete occlusion in 43 aneurysms with a progressive thrombosis rate of 19.4% (six out of 31 aneurysms). Aneurysm recurrence occurred in four (5.8%) patients, three were treated with coil embolization and one with placement of another stent. Overall long-term outcome was good (GOS Score 4 or 5) in 92.8%, and fatal (GOS Score 1) in 7.2% of the patients. Intracranial stents can be a useful addition to coil embolization for complex broad-based aneurysms. Favorable overall long-term outcome can be achieved in 92.8% of patients when using endovascular stent placement techniques.
