Abstract
A general transformation formula is presented for interval traits in pigs, such as weaning-to-first-service interval or farrowing interval. In the logarithmic transformation, only observations that are greater than the median of the trait as originally recorded are transformed. The transformation considerably reduces the skewness and kurtosis of the trait so that the distribution of transformed data approaches normality. In analysis of >12,000 records for weaning-to-first-service interval and >9,000 records for farrowing interval, heritability estimates for the transformed data were greater than for the data as recorded. Therefore, selection on the transformed trait should be more effective than selection on the original trait. The transformation formula is likely to be appropriate for other livestock species and traits.

The evaluation of E-Cadherin and vimentin as biomarkers of clinical outcomes among patients with non-small cell lung cancer treated with erlotinib as second- or third-line therapy. Anticancer Res 2012; 32:537-552. Abstract
E-Cadherin and vimentin protein expression was assessed in late stage non-small cell lung cancer tumors from the placebo controlled clinical trial, NCIC-CTG BR.21, to determine if these markers had the potential to predict outcome of erlotinib therapy. E-Cadherin and vimentin protein expression levels were assessed in tumors from 95 patients, who were representative of the overall population, using semi-quantitative immunohistochemistry. The percentage of tumor cells with grades 0, 1, 2, or 3 membrane staining of E-cadherin and cytoplasmic staining of vimentin was measured. Three scoring methods and multiple cut-offs were explored to determine if these markers were able to divide patients into groups with different overall survival (OS). A cut-off point for E-cadherin of ≥40% tumor cells with staining of +2 and +3 and a cut-off for vimentin of ≥10% of tumors cell with any staining provided the optimal stratification. The OS hazard ratio (HR) for E-cadherin(+) versus E-cadherin(-) in the erlotinib-treated patients was 0.68 (0.35-1.33) compared with 1.48 (0.69-3.15) in the placebo patients and the OS (HR) for erlotinib versus placebo was 0.47 (0.26-0.88) in E-cadherin(+) patients compared with 1.12 (0.52-2.44) in the E-cadherin(-) patients. The OS (HR) for vimentin(+) versus vimentin(-) in the erlotinib-treated patients was 0.65 (0.31-1.38) compared to 2.32 (1.09-4.94) in the placebo-treated patients and the OS (HR) for erlotinib versus placebo was 0.26 (0.11-0.63) in vimentin(+) compared to 0.99 (0.55-1.76) in the vimentin(-) patients. Similar trends were observed for progression-free survival and response rate. E-Cadherin and vimentin are biomarkers worthy of additional study as predictive markers of outcome of erlotinib therapy.

Abstract
We explore how implicit associations with the label "autism" influence how people with the diagnosis are represented and perceived. A recent trend in public discourse has been to add descriptors to autism, such as "high-functioning" or "spectrum," possibly to minimize the perceived stigma associated with the diagnosis. We examined the colors used by researchers in poster graphs to represent the term autism. Research has indicated that the color red has implicit negative associations when evaluation of competence is salient. We found that red was used more often for groups with an autism label than other groups. Further, the use of red was less frequent when there were qualifiers for autism such as "high-functioning," "spectrum," or for Asperger syndrome. We assert that this pattern is evidence of implicit, negative societal associations with the word autism that influence discourse on the diagnosis.

Tumor cell Programmed Death Ligand-1-mediated T cell suppression is overcome by co-expression of CD80 (66.29). THE JOURNAL OF IMMUNOLOGY 2011. Abstract
Abstract
Programmed death ligand 1 (PDL1 or B7-H1) is expressed constitutively or is induced by IFNγ on the cell surface of most human cancer cells and acts as a “molecular shield” by protecting tumor cells from T cell-mediated destruction. Using seven cell lines representing four histologically distinct solid tumors (lung adenocarcinoma, mammary carcinoma, cutaneous melanoma, and uveal melanoma) we demonstrate that transfection of human tumor cells with the gene encoding the costimulatory molecule CD80 prevents PDL1- mediated immune suppression by tumor cells and restores the ability of tumor cells to activate tumor-specific T lymphocytes. Mechanistically, CD80 mediates its effects through its extracellular domain which blocks the cell surface expression of PDL1 but does not prevent intracellular expression of PDL1 protein. These studies demonstrate a new role for CD80 in facilitating anti-tumor immunity and suggest new therapeutic avenues for preventing tumor cell PDL1-induced immune suppression.

Calculating economic weights for sheep sire breeds used in different breeding systems. J Anim Sci 2011; 89:1698-711. Abstract
The objective of this paper was to adapt gene-flow methodology for the calculation of economic weights (EW) for direct and maternal traits and trait components in sheep and to apply this methodology to the Suffolk breed in the Czech Republic. Computer programs were developed in which annual-lambing sheep production systems with purebreeding or partial terminal crossing were simulated. Using these programs, the EW for 12 production and functional traits were estimated for i) Suffolk sires whose sons were used both in purebreeding and in terminal crossing with the 4 dual-purpose breeds, Romanov, Sumavska, Romney, and Merinolandschaf; and ii) Suffolk sires used only for terminal crossing. For case (i), the EW were at first calculated separately for the purebreeding system and for the crossing systems with the 4 dual-purpose breeds in dam position. Compound EW for the general breeding goal for Suffolk were then estimated as weighted averages from the EW in the 5 subsystems. Standardized EW were calculated by multiplying the marginal EW with the genetic SD of the trait, and relative EW were defined as absolute values of the standardized EW expressed as percentage of the sum of the absolute values of the standardized EW over all traits. The 5 most important trait components for Suffolk sires whose sons were used both in purebreeding and in terminal crossing were (relative EW given in parentheses): the direct components of survival rate until weaning (21.0%), daily BW gain until weaning (14.1%), survival rate at birth (14.0%), the maternal component of survival rate until weaning (10.7%), and litter size at lambing (7.6%). There were only small differences between the relative EW calculated for the whole system with pure- and crossbreeding and the relative EW for the purebred system within the Suffolk breed. Therefore, selection of Suffolk rams using a selection index based on the compound EW is expected to be of high efficiency in all of the simulated breeding systems. Only direct traits were relevant for Suffolk sires used only for terminal crossing; the most important (range of relative EW calculated for the 4 crossing systems given in parentheses) were survival rate until weaning (35.2 to 36.5%), daily BW gain until weaning (24.2 to 26.3%), and survival rate at birth (23.7 to 24.8%).

Abstract
In patients up to 70 years of age with colon carcinoma stage III adjuvant chemotherapy with infusions of fluorouracil (5-FU) or oral capecitabine combined with oxaliplatin should be the standard method. A new standard for the palliative treatment of Her2/newly positive advanced gastric cancer and cancer at the gastro-esophageal junction is the administration of trastuzumab combined with chemotherapy. Patients with high-risk soft tissue sarcoma can be helped, in addition to surgical resection and subsequent radiotherapy, by neoadjuvant chemotherapy combined with regional deep hyperthermia. For patients with lung cancer additional individualized treatment is about to become routine. In addition to the EGFR mutation status, all non-smokers should in future be tested for aberration in the anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) gene.

Economic weights of production and functional traits for Holstein-Friesian cattle in Hungary. J Anim Breed Genet 2010; 127:143-53. Abstract
A bio-economic model was used to estimate economic values of 15 milk production, functional, growth and carcass traits for Hungarian Holstein-Friesian cattle. The calculations were carried out for the situation in Hungary from 2000 to 2007, assuming no production quotas. The marginal economic values were defined as partial derivatives of the profit function with respect to each trait in a production system with dairy cow herds and with sales of surplus male calves. The economic weights for maternal and direct components of traits were calculated multiplying the marginal economic values by the number of discounted expression summed over a 25-year investment period for 2-year-old bulls (candidates for selection). The standardized economic weight (economic weight x genetic standard deviation) of the trait or trait component expressed as percentage of the sum of the standardized economic weights for all traits and trait components represented the relative economic importance of this trait or trait component. The highest relative economic importance was obtained for milk yield (25%), followed by productive lifetime of cows (23%), protein yield and the direct component of a cow's total conception rate (9% each), the maternal effect of the total conception rate of cows and the somatic cell score (approximately 7% each), fat yield (5%) and mature weight of cows and daily gain in rearing of calves (approximately 4% each). Other functional traits (clinical mastitis incidence, calving difficulty score, total conception rate of heifers and calf mortality) reached a relative economic importance between 0.5% and 2%. Birth weight and dressing percentage were least important (<0.5%). Based on these results, the inclusion of productive lifetime and cow fertility in the breeding programme for Holstein-Friesian cattle in Hungary is advisable.

Elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations amplify Alternaria alternata sporulation and total antigen production. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH PERSPECTIVES 2010; 118:1223-8. Abstract
BACKGROUND Although the effect of elevated carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration on pollen production has been established in some plant species, impacts on fungal sporulation and antigen production have not been elucidated. OBJECTIVE Our purpose was to examine the effects of rising atmospheric CO2 concentrations on the quantity and quality of fungal spores produced on timothy (Phleum pratense) leaves. METHODS Timothy plants were grown at four CO2 concentrations (300, 400, 500, and 600 micromol/mol). Leaves were used as growth substrate for Alternaria alternata and Cladosporium phlei. The spore abundance produced by both fungi, as well as the size (microscopy) and antigenic protein content (ELISA) of A. alternata, were quantified. RESULTS Leaf carbon-to-nitrogen ratio was greater at 500 and 600 micromol/mol, and leaf biomass was greater at 600 micromol/mol than at the lower CO2 concentrations. Leaf carbon-to-nitrogen ratio was positively correlated with A. alternata spore production per gram of leaf but negatively correlated with antigenic protein content per spore. At 500 and 600 micromol/mol CO2 concentrations, A. alternata produced nearly three times the number of spores and more than twice the total antigenic protein per plant than at lower concentrations. C. phlei spore production was positively correlated with leaf carbon-to-nitrogen ratio, but overall spore production was much lower than in A. alternata, and total per-plant production did not vary among CO2 concentrations. CONCLUSIONS Elevated CO2 concentrations often increase plant leaf biomass and carbon-to-nitrogen ratio. Here we demonstrate for the first time that these leaf changes are associated with increased spore production by A. alternata, a ubiquitous allergenic fungus. This response may contribute to the increasing prevalence of allergies and asthma.

Abstract
A central feature of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is an impairment in 'social attention'--the prioritized processing of socially relevant information, e.g. the eyes and face. Socially relevant stimuli are also preferentially attended in a broader categorical sense, however: observers orient preferentially to people and animals (compared to inanimate objects) in complex natural scenes. To measure the scope of social attention deficits in autism, observers viewed alternating versions of a natural scene on each trial, and had to 'spot the difference' between them--where the difference involved either an animate or inanimate object. Change detection performance was measured as an index of attentional prioritization. Individuals with ASD showed the same prioritized social attention for animate categories as did control participants. This could not be explained by lower level visual factors, since the effects disappeared when using blurred or inverted images. These results suggest that social attention - and its impairment in autism - may not be a unitary phenomenon: impairments in visual processing of specific social cues may occur despite intact categorical prioritization of social agents.

Neurologic complications of Churg-Strauss syndrome--a prospective monocentric study. Eur J Neurol 2009; 17:582-8. Abstract
BACKGROUND Churg-Strauss syndrome (CSS) is a rare systemic vasculitis. Case series with a focus on neurologic involvement are not common. With this study, we intended to evaluate the frequency and types of neurologic manifestations and complications at time of diagnosis and during follow-up of patients with CSS. METHODS In this monocentric study, consecutive patients of our hospital with first diagnosis of CSS based on the criteria of the American College of Rheumatology were included between 2001 and 2007. Each patient underwent a periodic follow-up with clinical and electrophysiologic examination. Data were obtained prospectively. RESULTS Fourteen patients were included. All patients had a hypereosinophilia and a history of asthma. Twelve of 14 patients had a neurologic involvement, mainly as an acute or subacute multiplex mononeuropathy (eight patients) or an axonal polyneuropathy (three patients). Three patients suffered from a neuropathy of cranial nerves, and two patients had a cerebral infarct. Mean follow-up period was 31 months. With immunosuppressive therapy, 13 patients had no additional neurologic complications, one patient suffered from a cerebral infarct. Initial neurologic symptoms as a result of peripheral neuropathy improved, but sequelae of axonal damage were persistently detectable. CONCLUSIONS Even at time of diagnosis of a CSS, neurologic manifestations are common, especially as a multiplex mononeuropathy. With a consequent immunosuppressive therapy, new neurologic complications can be avoided for the most part.
