Abstract
Background:Behcet´s disease (BD) is a systemic autoimmune disease that affects multiple organ systems with recurrent oral ulcers, genital ulcers and skin lesions. Behcet´s Disease Current Activity Form (BDCAF) and Electronic Medical Record-based Activity Index (EMRAI) are commonly used internationally to evaluate the disease activity of BD.Objectives:This study aimed to analyze the clinical characteristics, the level of disease activity, and the incidence of anxiety and depression for Chinese BD patients. Patients can perform self-management of disease with SSDM.Methods:SSDM is a series of doctor-patient interactive applications for self-management of patients with chronic diseases. Patients can perform self-assessment with SSDM and upload the data to their authorized doctors. The SSDM patients’ application system integrates the BDCAF and EMRAI into one scoring system. Patients could obtain scores of BDCAF and EMRAI by responding to one questionnaire through SSDM.Results:From Apr 2017 to Jan 2020, 719 BD patients from 166 hospitals used SSDM, with a mean age of 38.97±12.71 (14~81) years old, and median disease duration of 20.8 months. 719 patients performed BDCAF and EMRAI self-assessment 1321 times, 252 patients repeat assessments for 855 times. The mean score of BDCAF and EMRAI are 3.57±2.17 and 3.44±1.90, respectively. The matching degree of the two score was 0.8747.The most common clinical characteristics were oral ulcers (83.73%), ocular symptoms (62.03%), joint pain (50.07%). The comparative study between males and females revealed significant difference in the aspects of epididymitis (10.94% vs 0, p<0.001), genital ulcer (35.09% vs 44.93%, p=0.01), headache (24.15% vs 33.92%, p=0.01) and superficial thrombophlebitis (24.15% vs 33.92%, p=0.01). Abstract
Background:Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is a chronic immune-mediated autoimmune disease that is characterized by fibrotic changes of the skin and internal organs, which in turn leads to distortion of tissue structure and gradual loss of organ function. So far, there is still no treatment allows full recovery from this severe disorder. Therefore, it is of great social significance to study the pathogenesis of this disease and find new targets for treatment. Interleukin 33 (IL-33), which is a potent inducer of type 2 immune response, has been confirmed to be involved in the development and progression of multiple fibrotic diseases. However, the role and mechanism of IL-33 in SSc-related fibrosis remains unclear.Objectives:To clarify the role of interleukin 33 (IL-33) and its receptor Suppression of tumorigenicity 2 (ST2) in the skin fibrosis of SSc, so to provides a new target for the treatment of fibrosis in patients with SSc.Methods:The levels of IL-33 and ST2 was analysed in human samples, murine models of SSc and in cultured fibroblasts by immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence. The functional role of IL-33 was evaluated by detecting changes in proliferation, migration, and activation of fibroblasts stimulated with recombinant IL-33 protein. MAPK and NF-κB signallings of fibroblasts were assessed by western blotting and analyses of target genes. The role of IL-33 in skin fibrosis was analysed in IL-33 deficient mice (il33−/−) and wild-type controls injected with bleomycin or NaCl.Results:The expression of IL-33 and its receptor ST2 were up-regulated in skin lesions of SSc patients (Fig 1 A-C) and bleomycin-treated mice(Fig1 D-F). Compared to the healthy skin, the skin from SSc patients expressed more ST2 on fibroblasts membrane(Fig 1 B-C). IL33 induces MAPK and IκBα activation in human dermal fibroblast(Fig 2 A), and promote proliferation, migration and production of collagen of human dermal fibroblasts, but not the release of inflammatory factors(IL-6, MCP-1)(Fig2 B-G). Abstract
Objective: To study the effect of COVID-19 on pregnancy outcomes and neonatal prognosis in Hubei Province. Method: s A retrospective comparison of the pregnancy outcomes was done between 16 women with COVID-19 and 45 women without COVID-19. Also, the results of laboratory tests, imaging examinations, and the 2019 novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) nucleic acid test were performed in 10 cases of neonatal delivered from women with COVID-19. Result: s (1) Of the 16 pregnant women with COVID-19, 15 cases were ordinary type and 1 case was severe type. No one has progressed to critical pneumonia.The delivery method of the two groups was cesarean section, and the gestational age were (38.7±1.4) and (37.9±1.6) weeks,there was no significant difference between the two groups (P>0.05). Also, there wee no significant differences in the intraoperative blood loss and birth weight of the newborn between the two groups (all P>0.05). (2) Ten cases of neonates delivered from pregnant women with COVID-19 were collected. The 2019-nCoV nucleic acid test were all negative.There were no significant differences in fetal distress, meconium-stained amniotic fluid, preterm birth, and neonatal asphyxia between the two groups (all P>0.05).(3) In the treatment of uterine contraction fatigue, carbetocin or carboprost tromethamine was used more in cesarean section for pregnant women with COVID-19 (1.3±0.6), compared with Non-COVID-19 group (0.5±0.7),the difference was statistically significant (P=0.001). Conclusions: If there is an indication for obstetric surgery or critical illness of COVID-19 in pregnant women, timely termination of pregnancy will not increase the risk of premature birth and asphyxia of the newborn, but it is beneficial to the treatment and rehabilitation of maternal pneumonia. Preventive use of long-acting uterotonic agents could reduce the incidence of postpartum hemorrhage during surgery. 2019-nCoV infection has not been found in neonates delivered from pregnant women with COVID-19.

Abstract
Semi-continuous experiments were conducted to compare the performances and energy efficiencies of two advanced anaerobic digestions (AAD) of sewage sludge with high-temperature thermal pretreatment (HTTP, 160 ± 1 °C and 0.55 MPa for 30 min) and low-temperature thermal-alkaline pretreatment (LTTAP, 60 ± 1 °C and pH 12.0 ± 0.1 for 30 min), which had similar sludge disintegration degree (9.44-9.48%). At the steady period of a SRT 20 d, the two AAD had similar methane production (150.22 ± 9.55 ml/L/d and 151.02 ± 12.56 ml/L/d) and organic matter removals (22.54 ± 2.84% and 23.15 ± 2.46% for volatile solids-VS). The results of high-throughput sequencing showed that the methanogenic pathways of the two AAD were strictly hydrogenotrophic (AAD with HTTP) and hydrogenotrophic/acetoclastic methanogenesis (AAD with LTTAP), respectively. The energy balance analysis suggested that the AAD with LTTAP was superior to that with HTTP because the former had a higher energy efficiency (1.610) than the latter (1.358).

Abstract
Rationale: Potential adverse effects of fluoride on neurodevelopment has been extensively explored and mitochondria have been recognized as critical targets. Mitochondrial biogenesis serves a crucial role in maintaining mitochondrial homeostasis and salubrious properties of resveratrol (RSV) has been well-defined. However, the molecular mechanisms governing mitochondrial biogenesis in developmental fluoride neurotoxicity remain unclear and the related therapeutic dietary agent is lacking. Methods: In vitro neuroblastoma SH-SY5Y cells and in vivo Sprague-Dawley rat model of developmental fluoride exposure were adopted. A total population of 60 children under long-term stable fluoride exposure were also recruited. This work used a combination of biochemical and behavioral techniques. Biochemical methods included analysis of mitochondrial function and mitochondrial biogenesis, as well as mRNA and protein expression of mitochondrial biogenesis signaling molecules, including silent information regulator 1 (SIRT1), peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ coactivator-1α (PGC-1α), nuclear respiratory factor 1 (NRF1) and mitochondrial transcription factor A (TFAM). Behavioral studies investigated spatial learning and memory ability of rats. Results: Both in vivo and in vitro experiments showed that sodium fluoride (NaF) caused mitochondrial dysfunction and impaired mitochondrial biogenesis. Also, NaF elevated SIRT1 levels and suppressed SIRT1 deacetylase activity along with decreased levels of PGC-1α, NRF1 and TFAM, suggestive of dysregulation of mitochondrial biogenesis signaling molecules. Moreover, enhancement of mitochondrial biogenesis by TFAM overexpression alleviated NaF-induced neuronal death through improving mitochondrial function in vitro. Further in vivo and in vitro studies identified RSV, the strongest specific SIRT1 activator, improved mitochondrial biogenesis and subsequent mitochondrial function to protect against developmental fluoride neurotoxicity via activating SIRT1-dependent PGC-1α/NRF1/TFAM signaling pathway. Noteworthy, epidemiological data indicated intimate correlations between disturbed circulating levels of mitochondrial biogenesis signaling molecules and fluoride-caused intellectual loss in children. Conclusions: Our data suggest the pivotal role of impaired mitochondrial biogenesis in developmental fluoride neurotoxicity and the underlying SIRT1 signaling dysfunction in such neurotoxic process, which emphasizes RSV as a potential therapeutic dietary agent for relieving developmental fluoride neurotoxicity.

Abstract
Weyl fermions scattering from a random Coulomb potential are predicted to exhibit resistivity versus temperature [Formula: see text] in a single particle model. Here we show that, in closed-environment-grown polycrystalline samples of Y2Ir2O7, [Formula: see text] over four orders of magnitude in [Formula: see text]. While the measured prefactor, [Formula: see text], is obtained from the model using reasonable materials parameters, the [Formula: see text] behavior extends far beyond the model's range of applicability. In particular, the behavior extends into the low-temperature, high-resistivity region where the Ioffe-Regel parameter, [Formula: see text]. Strong on-site Coulomb correlations, instrumental for predicting a Weyl semimetal state in Y2Ir2O7, are the possible origin of such 'bad' Weyl semimetal behavior.

Abstract
Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs)-induced neurotoxicity is closely associated with mitochondrial abnormalities. Mitochondrial fusion and fission dynamics are required for the maintenance of mitochondrial homeostasis. However, little is known about how PBDEs disrupt this dynamics and whether such disruption contributes to impaired neurodevelopment. Methods: We investigated the effects of 2, 2', 4, 4'-tetrabromodiphenyl ether (PBDE-47), the dominant congener in human samples, on mitochondrial fusion and fission dynamics using PC12 cells, a well-defined in vitro neurodevelopmental model. We also evaluated the effects of perinatal low-dose PBDE-47 exposure on hippocampal mitochondrial dynamics and its association with neurobehavioral changes in adult Sprague-Dawley rats. Results: In vitro, PBDE-47 disrupted mitochondrial dynamics by inhibiting mitochondrial fusion and fission simultaneously, accompanied by mitochondrial fragmentation, membrane potential dissipation, ATP loss, and apoptosis activation. Specifically, enhancing mitochondrial fusion by the chemical promoter M1 or adenovirus-mediated mitofusin 2 (Mfn2) overexpression rescued PBDE-47-caused mitochondrial dynamic, morphological and functional impairments, prevented the resultant apoptosis and promoted neuronal survival. Unexpectedly, either stimulating mitochondrial fission by adenovirus-mediated fission protein 1 (Fis1) overexpression or suppressing mitochondrial fission by the mitochondrial division inhibitor-1 (Mdivi-1) failed to reverse whereas aggravated PBDE-47-induced mitochondrial damage and neuronal death. Importantly, promoting mitochondrial fusion by Mfn2 overexpression neutralized the detrimental effects elicited by Fis1 overexpression after PBDE-47 treatment. Finally, perinatal oral administration of PBDE-47 elicited neurobehavioral deficits and hippocampal neuronal loss via apoptosis in adult rats, which were associated with mitochondrial dynamics alterations manifested as a fragmented phenotype. Conclusion: Our results suggest that PBDE-47 disrupts mitochondrial dynamics to induce mitochondrial abnormalities, triggering apoptosis and thus contributing to neuronal loss and subsequent neurobehavioral deficits. Targeting mitochondrial fusion may be a promising therapeutic intervention against PBDE-47 neurotoxicity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Thyroid hormones (THs) are critical for brain development. Whether low-moderate fluoride exposure affects thyroid function and what the impact is on children's intelligence remain elusive. OBJECTIVES We conducted a cross-sectional study to examine the associations between low-moderate fluoride exposure and thyroid function in relation to children's intelligence. METHODS We recruited 571 resident children, aged 7-13 years, randomly from endemic and non-endemic fluorosis areas in Tianjin, China. We measured fluoride concentrations in drinking water and urine using the national standardized ion selective electrode method. Thyroid function was evaluated through the measurements of basal THs [(total triiodothyronine (TT3), total thyronine (TT4), free triiodothyronine (FT3), free thyronine (FT4)] and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels in serum. Multivariable linear and logistical regression models were used to assess associations among fluoride exposure, thyroid function and IQ scores. RESULTS In adjusted models, every 1 mg/L increment of water fluoride was associated with 0.13 uIU/mL increase in TSH. Every 1 mg/L increment of urinary fluoride was associated with 0.09 ug/dL decrease in TT4, 0.009 ng/dL decrease in FT4 and 0.11 uIU/mL increase in TSH. Fluoride exposure was inversely related to IQ scores (B = -1.587; 95% CI: -2.607, -0.568 for water fluoride and B = -1.214; 95% CI: -1.987, -0.442 for urinary fluoride). Higher TT3, FT3 were related to the increased odds of children having high normal intelligence (OR = 3.407, 95% CI: 1.044, 11.120 for TT3; OR = 3.277, 95% CI: 1.621, 6.623 for FT3). We detected a significant modification effect by TSH on the association between urinary fluoride and IQ scores, without mediation by THs. CONCLUSIONS Our study suggests low-moderate fluoride exposure is associated with alterations in childhood thyroid function that may modify the association between fluoride and intelligence.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To observe the effect of early nutritional intervention on radiation-induced oral mucositis and nutritional status in patients with head and neck cancer (HNC). METHODS A total of 54 HNC patients were divided into early (28 cases) and late (26 cases) nutritional intervention groups. The early group received enteral nutrition at the beginning of radiotherapy (RT), while the late group received enteral nutrition after restricted feeding. Operators reported and assessed the timing and extent of oral mucositis and nutritional status during treatment. The nutritional status assessment indicators included body weight; body mass index (BMI); Patient-Generated-Subjective Global Assessment (PG-SGA) score; levels of albumin, hemoglobin and pre-albumin and total lymphocyte count. RESULTS The incidence of high-grade oral mucositis was significantly lower in the early group than that in the late group (P < 0.05). Nutritional status assessments showed more significant weight and BMI losses in the late group than in the early group at weeks 4 and 7 after RT (P < 0.01). The albumin decreased in the late group at week 7 after RT was more significant than that in the early group (P < 0.05). Albumin, hemoglobin and pre-albumin levels and total lymphocyte count decreased significantly in both groups (P > 0.05). During therapy, more patients in the early group were well-nourished and fewer were malnourished according to PG-SGA scores (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION Early nutritional intervention can reduce the incidence of high-grade oral mucositis during RT in patients with HNC and improve the nutritional status during treatment, which has important clinical significance.

Abstract
Background This study aimed to explore the correlation of A‐kinase‐interacting protein 1 (AKIP1) expression with clinical characteristics as well as survival profiles in non‐small‐cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients, and further investigate its underlying effect on regulating NSCLC cell functions. Methods 319 NSCLC patients who underwent resection were consecutively reviewed, and AKIP1 expression (in 319 tumor tissues and 145 adjacent tissues) was determined by immunohistochemistry. Disease‐free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS) were calculated. In vitro, control overexpression, AKIP1 overexpression, control shRNA and AKIP1 shRNA plasmids were transfected into A549 cells to evaluate the effect of AKIP1 on cell proliferation and apoptosis. Results A‐kinase‐interacting protein 1 expression was increased in tumor tissues compared to adjacent tissues, and it positively correlated with tumor size, lymph node metastasis and TNM stage in NSCLC patients. Kaplan‐Meier curves displayed that AKIP1 high expression correlated with worse DFS and OS, and multivariate Cox's regression revealed that it was an independent predictive factor for poor survival profiles. In vitro experiments displayed that AKIP1 expression was elevated in PC9 and A549 cells compared to normal lung epithelial cells; moreover, cell proliferation was increased by AKIP1 upregulation but reduced by AKIP1 downregulation, and cell apoptosis was decreased by AKIP1 upregulation but increased by AKIP downregulation in A549 cells. Interestingly, AKIP1 promoted fibronectin and zinc finger E‐box binding homeobox 1 expressions while reduced E‐cadherin expression in A549 cells. Conclusion A‐kinase‐interacting protein 1 overexpression correlates with deteriorative tumor features and worse survival profiles and promotes cell proliferation but represses apoptosis in NSCLC.

Abstract
Spiral configurations and helical curlings of plant tendrils and seed pods are very common in nature. Many researchers have tried to develop spirally deformable actuators to mimic these natural spirals through several approaches, such as preforming helical shapes, processing diagonal stripes and employing anisotropic organic layers. However, these methods are usually complex and time-consuming. Here, we used an efficient method to produce a highly oriented carbon nanotube (CNT) film and develop a series of spirally deformable soft actuators which perform various controllable helical actuations. The actuator consists of a CNT layer with strong anisotropy and a silicone layer. By simply adjusting the orientations of the aligned CNTs, the prepared actuators can accomplish left- or right-handed spiral deformations with different helical forms when driven by electricity. Finite element analyses and simulations were conducted to investigate the mechanism. It is confirmed that it is the anisotropic moduli of the CNT film that regulate the internal stress distributions of the actuators and lead to helical actuations. Moreover, complex actuator designs and functional applications were also carried out. A V-shaped actuator can simultaneously achieve left- and right-handed curling with large angles (630°), which vividly imitates the spiral winding of a tendril. A Y-shaped actuator performed three-dimensional movements, which can manipulate lightweight objects deftly. By virtue of easy preparation and flexible function design, the spirally deformable actuators based on the oriented CNT film will be very promising in artificial muscles and bionic soft robots.

Abstract
High fluoride exposure has been related to harmful health effects, but the impacts of low-to-moderate fluoride on child growth and obesity-related outcomes remain unclear. We performed a large-scale cross-sectional study to examine the association between low-to-moderate fluoride in drinking water and anthropometric measures among Chinese school-age children. We recruited 2430 resident children 7-13 years of age, randomly from low-to-moderate fluorosis areas of Baodi District in Tianjin, China. We analyzed the fluoride contents in drinking water and urine samples using the national standardized ion selective electrode method. Multivariable linear and logistic analyses were used to assess the relationships between fluoride exposure and age- and sex-standardized height, weight and body mass index (BMI) z-scores, and childhood overweight/obesity (BMI z-score > 1). In adjusted models, each log unit (roughly 10-fold) increase in urinary fluoride concentration was associated with a 0.136 unit increase in weight z-score (95% CI: 0.039, 0.233), a 0.186 unit increase in BMI z-score (95% CI: 0.058, 0.314), and a 1.304-fold increased odds of overweight/obesity (95% CI: 1.062, 1.602). These associations were stronger in girls than in boys (Pinteraction = 0.016), and children of fathers with lower education levels were more vulnerable to fluoride (Pinteraction = 0.056). Each log unit (roughly 10-fold) increase in water fluoride concentration was associated with a 0.129 unit increase in height z-score (95% CI: 0.005, 0.254), but not with other anthropometric measures. Our results suggest low-to-moderate fluoride exposure is associated with overweight and obesity in children. Gender and paternal education level may modify the relationship.

Abstract
Self-absorption-free laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (SAF-LIBS) can directly obtain the applicable quasi-optically thin lines by determining the optimal acquisition delay time according to the intensity ratio of doublet lines at specific transition wavelength of the analyzed elements, thus eliminating the influence of self-absorption on quantitative results. In quantitative analysis of samples with a certain content range, the key to the convenient application of this technique is to rapidly select the suitable doublet lines for the element to be analyzed. The theoretical analysis shows that the evolution trend of doublet intensity ratio is monotonous under the assumptions that the plasma is uniform and in local thermal equilibrium (LTE) and the area density (Nl) is a constant, which is also confirmed by the experimental results of Cu and Al. Thus, a rapid spectral line selection criterion for SAF-LIBS applications is derived: only when the doublet intensity ratios measured at the initial and final stages of plasma induced by the boundary sample with the highest element content lie on both sides of the theoretical ratio, the doublet lines can reach quasi-optically thin during plasma evolution and are suitable for SAF-LIBS measurements. This new criterion is helpful to promote the practicality and industrial application of SAF-LIBS technology.

Abstract
Reliable interconnection is a primary requirement for the fabrication of electronic or electromechanical devices in the bottom-up nanotechnology. At the current stage, although the position and fixation of functional elements through various methods have been achieved, the stable fixation process is still extremely difficult given the readily oxidative properties of the metal electrodes and the method for corresponding antioxidant protection by the dielectric coating. Here, we achieved a robust fixation of polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP)-coated silver nanoelectrodes and PVP-coated multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) through PVP pyrolysis at their interface. We comprehensively investigated the interface between the PVP-coated silver nanoelectrode and the PVP-coated MWCNT to better understand the leverage of the PVP protective layer on the electrical performance and joining strength properties during the self-soldering process. This self-soldering process is performed within an environmental scanning electron microscope by a nanorobot-assisted nanomanipulation system. Our results show that the conductivity of the soldered nanostructure is enhanced by about 1000 times after a 65 s vacuum annealing process. The PVP-coated MWCNT and the PVP-coated silver nanoelectrode were soldered together with a joining strength up to 112 MPa. The PVP protective layer and the subsequently formed amorphous carbon layer from the PVP pyrolysis provide good antioxidant protection for the whole soldering process. The PVP-coated silver nanoelectrode was also successfully positioned and soldered onto the silver pad, which verifies the feasibility of the provided self-soldering method. Additionally, our in situ investigation provides a reliable method for identifying metal or semiconductor materials and a temperature estimation method without any thermal sensors on the nanoscale. Our recipe highlights the promise of soldering dielectric-coated electrodes for fabricating nanoelectronic devices and transparent conductive films.

Abstract
Emerging evidence suggests environmental contaminant exposures during critical windows of development may contribute to the increasing prevalence of obesity. It has been shown that early life polybrominated diphenyl ethers exposures have critical impacts on child weight trajectories, however, little is known about their maternal mechanisms responsible for offspring obesity development. In this study, we investigated the effects of perigestational low-dose 2, 2', 4, 4'-tetrabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-47) exposure on maternal metabolome, and its possible link to adult offspring bodyweight changes. Female Sprague-Dawley rats were exposed to daily doses of 0.1, or 1 mg/kg BDE-47 from 10 days prior to conception until offspring were weaned on postnatal day 21, and then a gas chromatography-mass spectrometry based metabolomics analysis was used to uncover the global metabolic response in dams. The pups continued to grow into adulthood for measurements of bodyweight. Perigestational BDE-47 exposure caused increased adult bodyweight in male but not in female offspring and dams. Metabolomics revealed significant changes in maternal serum metabolites that clearly distinguish BDE-47 from control rats. These differentially expressed metabolites were primarily implicated in amino acid, lipid, carbohydrate, and energy metabolisms, which was confirmed by pathway analysis. Importantly, most of these identified metabolites were decreased, a state similar to maternal malnutrition that can predispose adult male offspring to weight increase and adiposity in a postnatal environment with abundant calories. Collectively, our data suggest that perigestational exposure to low-dose BDE-47 produces altered maternal serum metabolome, which may be an additional contributing factor to weight gain in adult male offspring.

Abstract
Kidney injury significantly increases overall mortality. Neutrophilic granulocytes (neutrophils) are the most abundant human blood leukocytes. They are characterized by a high turnover rate, chiefly controlled by granulocyte colony stimulating factor (G‐CSF). The role of kidney injury and uremia in regulation of granulopoiesis has not been reported. Kidney transplantation, which inherently causes ischemia–reperfusion injury of the graft, elevated human neutrophil expression of the surface glycoprotein CD177. CD177 is among the most G‐CSF‐responsive neutrophil genes and reversibly increased on neutrophils of healthy donors who received recombinant G‐CSF. In kidney graft recipients, a transient rise in neutrophil CD177 correlated with renal tubular epithelial G‐CSF expression. In contrast, CD177 was unaltered in patients with chronic renal impairment and independent of renal replacement therapy. Under controlled conditions of experimental ischemia–reperfusion and unilateral ureteral obstruction injuries in mice, renal G‐CSF mRNA and protein expression significantly increased and systemic neutrophilia developed. Human renal tubular epithelial cell G‐CSF expression was promoted by hypoxia and proinflammatory cytokine interleukin 17A in vitro. Clinically, recipients of ABO blood group‐incompatible kidney grafts developed a larger rise in neutrophil CD177. Their grafts are characterized by complement C4d deposition on the renal endothelium, even in the absence of rejection. Indeed, complement activation, but not hypoxia, induced primary human endothelial cell G‐CSF expression. Our data demonstrate that kidney injury induces renal G‐CSF expression and modulates granulopoiesis. They delineate differential G‐CSF regulation in renal epithelium and endothelium. Altered granulopoiesis may contribute to the systemic impact of kidney injury.

Abstract
Background In cancer progression, hypoxia, or low oxygen tension, is a major regulator of tumor aggressiveness and metastasis. However, how cancer cells adapt to the hypoxia and communicate with other mesenchymal cells in microenvironment during tumor development remains to be elucidated. Here, we investigated the involvement of exosomes in modulating angiogenesis and enhancing metastasis in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). Methods Differential centrifugation, transmission electron microscopy and nanoparticle tracking analysis were used to isolate and characterize exosomes. Colony formation and transwell assay were performed to assess the proliferation, migration and invasion of human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs). The tube formation assay and matrigel plug assay were used to evaluate the vascular formation ability of HUVECs in vitro and in vivo respectively. An in vivo nude mice model was established to detect the regulatory role of exosomes in ESCC progression. Microarray analysis was performed to analyze the transcriptome profiles in HUVECs. Results Exosomes derived from ESCC cells cultured under hypoxia played a better role in promoting proliferation, migration, invasion and tube formation of HUVECs in vitro and in vivo than exosomes from ESCC cells cultured under normoxia. Moreover, hypoxic exosomes significantly enhanced the tumor growth and lung metastasis compared with normoxic exosomes in nude mice models. Interestingly, endothelial cells were programmed by hypoxic and normoxic exosomes from ESCC cells which altered the transcriptome profile of HUVECs. Conclusions Taken together, our data identified an angiogenic role of exosomes from ESCC cells which shed light on the further application of exosomes as valuable therapeutic target for ESCC.
