Abstract
The hypoglycemic and antidiabetic effect of hydroxypropyl tapioca starch (HPTS) with a varying degree of substitution (DS: 0.058, 0.091, and 0.180) was investigated in rats and KKAy mice, an animal model of type 2 diabetes. The positive incremental area under the curve (IAUC) for glucose significantly decreased as the DS of HPTS increased. The IAUC after intragastric intubation of the highest HPTS (HPTS-III, DS = 0.180) was 55% of the IAUC of tapioca starch (TS). After 28 d, fasting blood glucose and insulin concentrations were significantly lower in rats fed HPTS-III (50 g/kg diet) than in those fed TS (P < 0.05). In KKAy mice fed HPTS-III (50 or 100 g/kg diet) for 33 d, as compared with TS, there was a delay in the detection of glucose in urine and also a decreased incidence of finding glucose in urine on days 7, 21, and 28; in addition, the AUCs for glucose in the oral glucose tolerance test on days 14 and 28 were significantly lower (P < 0.05 and P < 0.05, respectively). The plasma adiponectin concentration and the quantitative insulin sensitivity check index (QUICKI) were significantly higher in mice fed HPTS-III than in those fed TS (P < 0.01), whereas the homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) was lower (P < 0.01). Energy intake was significantly lower in mice fed HPTS-III than in those fed TS. These findings show that HPTS with a high DS resists digestion by alpha-amylase and improves insulin resistance in KKAy mice by decreasing energy intake. However, the potential mechanism by which HPTS-III decreases energy intake is unclear at present.

Abstract
Biomedical researchers usually test the null hypothesis that there is no difference of the population mean of pharmacokinetics (PK) parameters between genotypes by the Kruskal-Wallis test. Although a monotone increasing pattern with a number of alleles is expected for PK-related genes, the Kruskal-Wallis test does not consider a monotonic response pattern. For detecting such patterns in clinical and toxicological trials, a maximum contrast method has been proposed. We show how that method can be used with pharmacogenomics data to a develop test of association. Further, using simulation studies, we compare the power of the modified maximum contrast method to those of the maximum contrast method and the Kruskal-Wallis test. On the basis of the results of those studies, we suggest rules of thumb for which statistics to use in a given situation. An application of all three methods to an actual genome-wide pharmacogenomics study illustrates the practical relevance of our discussion.

Abstract
Two types of cell therapy for facial anti-aging in my clinical experience are introduced in this presentation. One therapy is cultured gingival fibroblasts injection. This procedure lasts for at least one year, making it a good option for patients. The other is platelet rich plasma injection. The results of the preliminary data are promising, but not yet well understood. More clinical data and long-term follow-up is needed.

Abstract
We have investigated the Mott transition in a quasi-two-dimensional Mott insulator EtMe{3}P[Pd(dmit){2}]{2} with a spin-frustrated triangular-lattice in hydrostatic pressure and magnetic-field [Et and Me denote C2H5 and CH3, respectively, and Pd(dmit){2} (dmit=1,3-dithiole-2-thione-4,5-dithiolate,dithiolate) is an electron-acceptor molecule]. In the pressure-temperature (P-T) phase diagram, a valence-bond solid phase is found to neighbor the superconductor and metal phases at low temperatures. The profile of the phase diagram is common to those of Mott insulators with antiferromagnetic order. In contrast to the antiferromagnetic Mott insulators, the resistivity in the metallic phase exhibits anomalous temperature dependence, rho=rho{0}+AT(2.5).

Abstract
Erectile dysfunction (ED) is frequently associated with injury to the cavernous nerve sustained during pelvic surgery. Functional recovery from cavernous nerve injury is generally incomplete and occurs over an extended time frame. We employed a therapeutic gene transfer approach with herpes simplex virus (HSV) vector expressing glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF). Rat cavernous nerve was injured bilaterally using a clamp and dry ice. For HSV-treated groups, 20 microl of purified vector stock was administered directly to and around the damaged nerve. Delivery of an HSV vector expressing both green fluorescent protein (GFP) and lacZ (HSV-LacZ) was used as a control. Intracavernous pressure along with systemic arterial pressure (ICP/AP) was measured 2 and 4 weeks after the nerve injury. Fluorogold (FG) was injected into the penile crus 7 days before killing to assess nerve survival. Approximately 60% of major pelvic ganglion (MPG) cells were GFP positive after viral administration. At 4 weeks after nerve injury, rats treated with HSV-GDNF exhibited significant recovery of ICP/AP compared with control vector or untreated groups. The HSV-GDNF group also yielded more FG-positive MPG cells than the control vector group. HSV vector-mediated delivery of GDNF presents a viable approach for the treatment of ED following cavernous nerve injury.

Abstract
Models of the saccadic system differ in several respects including the signals fed back to their comparators, as well as the location and identity of the units that could serve as comparators. Some models place the comparator in the superior colliculus while others assign this role to the reticular formation. To test the plausibility of reticular models we stimulated electrically efferent fibers of the superior colliculus (SC) of alert cats along their course through the pons, in the predorsal bundle (PDB). Our data demonstrate that electrical stimulation of the PDB evokes saccades, even with stimuli of relatively low frequency (100 Hz), which are often accompanied by slow drifts. The velocity and latency of saccades are influenced by the intensity and frequency of stimulation while their amplitude depends on the intensity of stimulation and the initial position of the eyes. The dynamics of evoked saccades are comparable to those of natural, self-generated saccades of the cat and to those evoked in response to the electrical stimulation of the SC. We also show that PDB-evoked saccades are not abolished by lesions of the SC and that therefore antidromic activation of the SC is not needed for their generation. Our data clearly demonstrate that the burst generator of the horizontal saccadic system is located downstream of the SC. If it is configured as a local loop controller, as assumed by most models of the saccadic system, our data also demonstrate that its comparator is located beyond the decussation of SC efferent fibers, in the pons.

Abstract
Neurofibromatosis 2 (NF2) patients with constitutional splice site NF2 mutations have greater variability in disease severity than NF2 patients with other types of mutations; the cause of this variability is unknown. We evaluated genotype-phenotype correlations, with particular focus on the location of splice site mutations, using mutation and clinical information on 831 patients from 528 NF2 families with identified constitutional NF2 mutations. The clinical characteristics examined were age at onset of symptoms of NF2 and number of intracranial meningiomas, which are the primary indices of the severity of NF2. Two regression models were used to analyse genotype-phenotype correlations. People with splice site mutations in exons 1-5 had more severe disease than those with splice site mutations in exons 11-15. This result is compatible with studies showing that exons 2 and 3 are required for self-association of the amino terminal of the NF2 protein in vitro, and that deletions of exons 2 and 3 in transgenic and knockout mouse models of NF2 cause a high prevalence of Schwann cell derived tumours.
