Genomic analysis of two porcine encephalomyocarditis virus strains isolated in China

Two strains of encephalomyocarditis virus (EMCV), designated BJC3 and HB1, were isolated from an aborted fetus and the heart tissue of a dead piglet that had pericardial fluid, respectively. The complete genomic sequences of the two viruses were determined and analyzed. The size of the genomes of BJC3 and HB1 were 7746 and 7735 nucleotides, respectively, including poly(A) tails. Comparative analysis with the genomic sequences of other EMCV strains showed that BJC3 and HB1 shared higher identity (92.5-99.6%) with BEL-2887A/91, EMCV-R and PV21, but lower identity (83.3-84.6%) with EMC-B, EMC-D and D variants, and only 81.0% with Mengo virus. Two amino acid mutations in the leader protein of the two viruses and one amino acid substitution in VP1 of BJC3 were found in comparison to other EMCV strains Phylogenetic analysis based on the amino acid sequences of the entire ORF revealed that the two Chinese isolates BJC3 and HB1 clustered together with the strains BEL-2887/91, EMCV-R and PV21, which belong to the same genetic subgroup as EMCV-30. Our results provide genomic information for EMCV isolated in China.

Incidence of ovine abortion by Coxiella burnetii in northern Spain

The infectious causes of ovine abortion occurring in 148 farms in northern Spain between 1999 and 2003 were investigated. Laboratory analysis included microbiological, serological, pathological and molecular techniques. Border disease was diagnosed in 16% of the flocks, toxoplasmosis in 15%, chlamydiosis in 12%, salmonellosis in 10%, Q fever in 3%, miscellaneous infections in 7% (Yersinia spp., Listeria spp., Brucella spp.), and inflammatory lesions compatible with an infectious cause were seen in 7% of the flock. In an additional 1% of the flocks non-infectious causes were identified, and a diagnosis was not reached in 38% of the flocks. When a PCR retrospective study was carried out to investigate the possible implication of Coxiella burnetii in the cases without diagnosis, including those with inflammatory lesions, the prevalence of this pathogen increased from 3% up to 9% of the flocks, revealing the importance of this zoonotic pathogen as a small-ruminant abortifacient agent. Placenta was the most commonly positive sample, but other fetal tissues were also of value for C. burnetii DNA detection. The present results update information about the situation of abortion in sheep farms in northern Spain, and highlight the relevance of molecular diagnostic tools in routine laboratory analysis of abortions by C. burnetii.

Goats may experience reproductive failures and shed Coxiella burnetii at two successive parturitions after a Q fever infection

Q fever is a zoonosis caused by the obligate intracellular bacterium, Coxiella burnetii. Aborting domestic ruminants are the main source of human infection. In January 2003, an abortion episode occurred in a dairy caprine herd where 18/60 (30%) goats experienced reproductive problems: 4/60 (7%) aborted and 14/60 (23%) had stillbirths. Serological screening for abortion-related infectious diseases suggested Q fever. The diagnosis of C. burnetii infection was confirmed with PCR based on the occurrence of C. burnetii shedding into vaginal mucus, faeces and colostrums taken after kidding from the affected animals. The pregnancy following this episode resulted in one abortion and four stillbirths; three of those goats had already experienced reproductive failure during the previous kidding season. The seroprevalence of C. burnetii infection and the bacteria shedding were investigated using both ELISA and PCR assays, respectively, during the course of the initial and subsequent kidding seasons. Serological testing, performed on the whole herd 6 weeks after the abortion episode, showed 48/60 (80%) of ELISA positive goats. PCR assay performed on both vaginal swab and milk samples showed that the bacterium was shed for almost four months after the outbreak. C. burnetii DNA was also amplified from vaginal swab and milk samples taken from goats after the second kidding season. Furthermore, the bacteria were found into 14 vaginal swabs and 12 milk samples taken from infected females at both kidding seasons.

Detection of equine herpesvirus 1 genome 1B in Argentina

To determine the genomic variation of equine herpesviruses (EHVs) isolated in Argentina between 1979 and the first half of 2004, DNA sequences from all 69 strains isolated were analysed. Sixty strains were recovered from aborted fetuses, one from leucocyte-rich plasma from a horse with respiratory signs and eight from cases of neonatal disease. The DNA was extracted from rabbit kidney epithelial (RK13) cells infected with each strain and digested with three restriction endonucleases (BamHI, Bg/II and KpnI). Two strains could be differentiated using BamHI restriction and were assigned to the EHV-1 1B prototype group. Only one of these two strains was typed EHV-1 1B with Bg/II. DNA digestion with KpnI was ineffective. The results obtained in this study demonstrate that the EHV-1 1B genome has been present in Argentina since at least 1996. The finding of two strains with this electropherotype suggests that there is genomic heterogeneity among Argentinian isolates.

Diagnosis and Treatment of Equine Placentitis

Equine placentitis is a complex disease that has devastating consequences for horse owners. Placentitis is a significant cause of foal loss annually. Prompt diagnosis and treatment of the disease are paramount for survival of the affected neonate. This article discusses current information on pathogenesis of the disease as well as diagnostic and therapeutic options.

Outbreak of Salmonella Dublin-associated abortion in Danish fur farms

Outbreaks of Salmonella Dublin infections were recorded in 25 Danish mink and fox farms. All farms suffered extensive disease problems; clinical and pathological observations included abortion, stillbirths, necrotizing endometritis, and increased mortality. By genotyping with pulsed-field gel electrophoresis and amplified fragment length polymorphism, all isolates of S. Dublin had indistinguishable patterns. The outbreaks took place during April and May, around the time of whelping. During this period, mink are particularly susceptible to Salmonella infections. All affected farms were served by the same feed factory and it was concluded that a batch of contaminated feed was responsible for the outbreaks, although repeated culture of feed samples collected during the same period were negative. No other likely source could be identified. The results emphasize the importance of strict hygiene measures at feed factories and the proper use of ingredients of known Salmonella status, in particular during the whelping season. Infected mink farms did not have a higher risk of outbreak of salmonellosis in the year following the outbreak.

The association between Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis fecal shedding or clinical Johne's disease and lactation performance on two Minnesota, USA dairy farms

Lactation performance of cows infected with Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (Map) was previously studied using only serum ELISA as a diagnostic method. This study evaluated on two dairy farms in Minnesota, USA the lactation performance (measures of health, production, reproduction, and survival) of cows shedding Map in feces before calving and of cows culled with clinical signs consistent with Johne's disease (JD) during the subsequent lactation. Fecal samples were collected from 1052 cows within 21 day before calving and tested for Map with bacterial culture. Producers' observed signs of clinical disease (milk fever, retained placenta, metritis, ketosis, displaced abomasum, lameness, mastitis, pneumonia, and JD) and production and reproduction data were recorded for each cow. The association between fecal shedding or clinical JD and lactation performance was evaluated. Logistic regression was used to evaluate the association with any clinical and subclinical diseases as the outcome. General linear model was used to evaluate the association with milk production, and survival analysis techniques were used to evaluate the association with days in the study before culling and days from calving to conception. In 84 cows (8% of 1052 cows) fecal samples were positive for Map (46% light, 26% moderate, and 28% heavy shedders). In multivariable analysis, light, moderate, and heavy fecal shedding cows produced on average 537, 1403, and 1534 kg, respectively, less milk per lactation and 1.4, 5.2, and 7.5 kg, respectively, less milk per day than fecal negative cows. Fecal culture positive cows were less likely to be bred and conceive. In the multivariable analysis the 56 cows culled with presumed JD produced approximately 1500 kg/lactation or 5 kg/day less than all other cows. The negative economic impact implied by decreased lactation performance in cows shedding Map or with clinical JD may motivate producers to implement programs to control Map infection and subsequent JD.

Cerebellar hypoplasia in three sibling cats after intrauterine or early postnatal parvovirus infection

The present report describes the case of an intrauterine or early postnatal parvovirus infection with subsequent cerebellar hypoplasia in three kittens from the same litter. Clinical examination of affected cats revealed neurologic signs indicative of cerebellar ataxia. Due to poor prognosis, animals were euthanised and submitted for necropsy. Post mortem examination demonstrated variable degrees of cerebellar hypoplasia. Histologically, brain lesions were characterised by segmental loss of the external and internal granular layer and decreased numbers of Purkinje cells. Reactive proliferation of astrocytes in the central nervous system was verified by the detection of GFAP-expressing glial cells in affected areas using immunohistochemistry. Furthermore, parvovirus antigen was detected immunohistochemically in neuronal cells of the cerebellum, but not in other parts of the brain and spinal cord or non-neuronal tissues. The present report demonstrates the usefulness of post mortem examination and detection of viral antigen by immunohistochemistry for the discrimination of neurologic disorders in feline species. Neurologic deficiencies due to cerebellar hypoplasia caused by in utero or perinatal feline parvovirus infection should be taken into consideration as differential diagnoses for ataxia in neonatal and juvenile cats.

Biosecurity and the various types of embryos transferred

The aim of the present paper was to review some features related to the risk analysis of three types of embryos to be transferred, namely the in vivo derived, the in vitro produced and the cloned ones. For in vivo-collected embryos, a considerable number of experiments and scientific investigations have been performed and hundreds of thousands of embryos are transferred annually with no contamination of associated diseases. Provided that the code of practice such as that published by the International Embryo Transfer Society is strictly followed by the embryo transfer practitioners, the statement made some 17 years ago saying that the in vivo-derived embryo transfer was the safest way of exchanging genes remains entirely true, thanks to the professionalism of the embryo transfer industry. For the in vitro-produced embryos, some particular rules have to be followed because of specific risks for some pathogens to strongly adhere to the zona pellucida of such embryos. There are some means to monitor and control those effects, and the transfer of in vitro-produced embryos can also be a very safe way to exchange genes around the world. The third type of embryos, the cloned ones, is a quite different category and the risk analysis to be soundly made still needs a lot of investigations so as to characterize the potential risks if there are, in terms not only of disease transmission but also in terms of public health, zoonotic risks as well as those related to quality and safety of food. The problem in this regard, is more directly addressed for offspring of clones than to the cloned embryos themselves. Published data on this issue are increasing in numbers so that progress in that area is expected in the few years to come.

The geographic distribution of the putative agent of epizootic bovine abortion in the tick vector, Ornithodoros coriaceus

Epizootic bovine abortion (EBA), also known as "foothill abortion", is a vector borne disease of beef cattle that graze in the mountainous regions of California, southern Oregon and western Nevada transmitted by the argasid tick Ornithodoros coriaceus. Recently, the putative agent of EBA was identified as a novel Deltaproteobacter in the order Myxococcales. In this study, a TaqMan real-time PCR (TM-PCR) protocol specific to the putative EBA agent was developed. The new real-time TM-PCR assay functioned sensitively and specifically to detect pathogen DNA in field-collected O. coriaceus ticks. The assay had an analytical sensitivity of a single plasmid copy and, when evaluated with a collection of tick-borne pathogens, yielded a positive PCR-result only for the agent of EBA. Use of the TM-PCR represents an effective tool for rapid and highly sensitive assessment of environmental risk and spatial and statistical analysis to highlight areas where there may be increased risk for EBA in susceptible cattle.

Toxic shock due to Streptococcus pyogenes in a rhesus monkey (Macaca mulatta)

Recent years have seen a worldwide resurgence in serious infections caused by group A streptococci. This group includes Streptococcus pyogenes, one of the most common pathogens among children which causes diverse suppurative infections, such as pharyngitis, as well as nonsuppurative infections with sequelae, such as rheumatoid fever and rheumatic heart disease. S. pyogenes produces several superantigen-like erythrogenic toxins, which are believed to be associated with pyrogenicity, erythromatous skin reactions, and various immunologic and cytotoxic effects. These toxins also can cause myocardial necrosis. In addition, recently reported streptococcal infections in obstetric human patients appear to be clinically different from classic puerperal sepsis. Here, we report a case of spontaneous streptococcal infection in a pregnant female rhesus monkey (Macaca mulatta). In addition to lesions consistent with bacteremia and toxic shock, this animal had severe cardiac lesions resembling those described in humans with rheumatic heart disease. S. pyogenes was isolated from intracardiac blood, liver, placenta, and fetal tissues. This isolate also had a unique M protein gene.

Diagnosis of Coxiella burnetii-related abortion in Italian domestic ruminants using single-tube nested PCR

Coxiella burnetii, an obligate intracellular parasite with a worldwide distribution, is the causative agent of acute and chronic Q fever in humans. Although infection is often unapparent in cattle, sheep and goats, there is increasing evidence that C. burnetii infection in these species is associated with abortion and stillbirth. This paper describes the introduction of a single-tube nested PCR protocol for the diagnosis of C. burnetii-related abortion in domestic ruminants in Italy. A total of 514 aborted foetuses from cattle (n = 138) and sheep and goat (n = 376), collected from 301 farms, were analyzed from January 2001 to March 2005. Ninety-seven of 514 (18.9%) animals tested PCR-positive, with 16/138 (11.6%) cattle and 81/376 (21.5%) sheep and goat. Eleven of 102 (10.8%) farms with reproductive disorders in cattle and 37/199 (18.6%) farms with reproductive disorders in sheep and goats were infected with C. burnetii. A greater incidence was observed in three of the seven investigated provinces (p < 0.01), with rates of infected farms of up to 23.8%. Data showed that almost all the C. burnetii-related abortions were recorded between October and April (p < 0.01). These findings suggest that Q fever in humans is largely underestimated in Italy, probably because its occurrence is obscured by flu-like symptoms in acute forms.

Comparison of Fetal and Maternal Inflammatory Responses in the Ovine Placenta after Experimental Infection with Chlamydophila abortus

Placentae from 13 pregnant ewes infected intravenously with Chlamydophila abortus, together with placentae from nine uninfected control ewes, were examined at 14, 21 or 28 days post-inoculation (p.i.). Chlamydial inclusions were present in the trophoblast at 14 days p.i. and were widespread by 21 days p.i. Chorioallantoic lesions (oedema, arteritis and thrombosis) were severe at 28 days p.i., the changes being particularly marked in the membrane surrounding placentomes. Lymphocytes constituted only a small proportion of the cellular infiltrate in the chorioallantois; neutrophil infiltration of the chorionic surface was evident where the trophoblast layer had sloughed, whereas macrophages represented the predominant cell type in the deeper stroma. In contrast, on the maternal side of the placenta, chlamydial inclusions were sparse at all timepoints, and even at 28 days p.i., lesions were restricted to focal endometritis at the placentomal limbus and occasional foci of septal necrosis. T lymphocytes were numerous within endometrial and septal lesions, the infiltrate consistently containing more CD8(+) than CD4(+) cells. The fetal response to chlamydial invasion of the placenta was innate in character, whereas the maternal response appeared to represent an acquired, chlamydia-specific immune response.

Infectious causes of reproductive loss in camelids

Reproductive losses in camelids are due to infertility, pregnancy loss, udder diseases and neonatal mortality caused by a variety of infectious diseases. Uterine infection and abortion represent the major complaint in camelid veterinary practice. The major infectious organisms in endometritis and metritis are E. coli and Streptococcus equi subspecies zooepidemicus. Abortion rates due to infectious diseases vary from 10% to more than 70% in some areas. Leptospirosis, toxoplasmosis and chlamydiosis have been diagnosed as the major causes of abortion in llamas and alpacas. In camels, brucellosis and trypanosomiasis represent the major causes of infectious abortion in the Middle East and Africa. Mastitis is rare in South American camelids. The prevalence of subclinical udder infection in camels can reach very high proportions in dairy camels. Udder infections are primarily due to Streptococcus agalactiae and Staphylococcus aureus. Neonatal mortality is primarily due to diarrhea following failure of passive transfer and exposure to E. coli, rotavirus, coronavirus, Coccidia and Salmonella. This paper reviews the etio-pathogenesis of these causes of reproductive losses, as well as the major risk factors and strategies to prevent their occurrence.

Reproductive losses caused by bovine viral diarrhea virus and leptospirosis

Bovine viral diarrhea virus and Leptospira spp. are two of the common pathogenic organisms responsible for reproductive losses in cattle worldwide. Both can be come endemic in herds resulting in chronic low-grade reproductive losses or they can be introduced into relatively naïve herds, resulting in substantial reproductive losses over a short period of time. Both organisms are a differential diagnoses for common reproductive losses that veterinarians investigate, including low conception rates and abortions.

Reproductive performance of gilts following vaccination and subsequent heterologous challenge with European strains of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus

The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of two commercially available modified live virus vaccines for preventing the reproductive and early postnatal consequences of infecting (challenging) pregnant gilts with virulent porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV). For this purpose 21 crossbred gilts were allocated to one or another of four groups (Groups A-D). Group A comprised four gilts neither vaccinated nor challenged; Group B comprised five gilts that were challenged but not vaccinated; Group C comprised seven gilts that were vaccinated (AmervacPRRS) and challenged; Group D comprised five gilts that were vaccinated (Pyrsvac-183) and challenged. Vaccination was 24 days before conception, and challenge was at 90 days of gestation. Both vaccine viruses and the challenge virus were European strains but differed in part from one another on the basis of their genetic (nucleotide) sequence. After challenge PRRSV was isolated from five (100%), four (57%), and two (40%) of the gilts of Groups B, C and D, respectively. Although vaccination failed to prevent a detectable viremia in all of the gilts of Groups C and D after they were challenged (or congenital infection of some of their pigs), it did provide a statistically significant level of protection in regard to the incidence of congenital infection, reproductive performance, and pig health and viability. Namely, for Groups C and D the numbers of liveborn pigs/litter and healthy pigs/litter throughout the early postnatal period were similar to those of Group A (nonvaccinated and nonchallenged) and far exceeded those of Group B (nonvaccinated and challenged).

Detection of individual microbial pathogens by proximity ligation

BACKGROUND

Nucleic acid amplification allows the detection of single infectious agents. Protein-based assays, although they provide information on ongoing infections, have substantially less detection sensitivity.

METHODS

We used proximity ligation reactions to detect proteins on bacteria and virus particles via nucleic acid amplification. Antibodies recognizing viral or bacterial surface proteins were equipped with DNA strands that could be joined by ligation when several antibodies were bound in proximity to surface proteins of individual infectious agents.

RESULTS

Detection sensitivities similar to those of nucleic acid-based detection reactions were achieved directly in infected samples for a parvovirus and an intracellular bacterium.

CONCLUSIONS

This method enables detection of ligated DNA strands with good sensitivity by real-time PCR and could be of value for early diagnosis of infectious disease and in biodefense.

Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis of Campylobacter jejuni sheep abortion isolates

Campylobacter species are a significant cause of sheep abortion in most sheep-raising countries. In New Zealand, Campylobacter fetus subsp. fetus is the leading cause of diagnosed sheep abortion and the species C. jejuni and C. coli have also been implicated. To date, strain typing information of C. jejuni sheep abortion isolates is limited. The objective of the present study was to genotype C. jejuni isolates cultured from sheep abortions submitted to diagnostic laboratories in New Zealand during the 2000 breeding season, using pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE). In this study, C. jejuni isolates were cultured from approximately 10% of farms from which Campylobacter species were isolated from sheep abortions in the year 2000. This equated to 25 C. jejuni isolates from 21 farms. These isolates were obtained from the veterinary diagnostic laboratories and strain typed using the molecular typing technique PFGE. Ten distinct PFGE types were identified amongst the isolates. No particular PFGE type was found most frequently amongst these C. jejuni sheep abortion isolates. However, indistinguishable or similar C. jejuni PFGE types were identified from different aborted foetuses from the same flock, consistent with the role of C. jejuni as an infectious cause of abortion in sheep. These strain types were similar or indistinguishable from C. jejuni sheep abortion isolates obtained in 1999 in a smaller study (Mannering, S.A., Marchant, R.M., Middelberg, A., Perkins, N.R., West, D.M., Fenwick, S.G., 2003. Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis typing of C. fetus subsp. fetus from sheep abortions in the Hawke's Bay region of New Zealand. NZ Vet. J. 51, 33-37).

Bluetongue virus: (1) in pregnant white-tailed deer (2) a plaque reduction neutralization test

Six white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) were infected with bluetongue virus (BTs, vaccinal strain) approximately one-third of the way through their gestation period. One deer died of bluetongue 21 days after inoculation. Of the five surviving the infection, one had two mummified fetuses, and the others no fetuses upon euthanasia two weeks after term. Fetuses were present in two control deer and in the one which died of bluetongue. A plaque reduction neutralization test for bluetongue virus was developed and described for the first time and its sensitivity illustrated by high post inoculation titers which ranged from 1:3200 to greater than 1:16000.

Neospora caninum and Leptospira serovar serostatus in dairy cattle in Ontario

No significant association existed between Neospora caninum titer and serostatus to Leptospira serovar hardjo, icterohaemorrhagiae, or pomona in cattle on 78 dairy herds in Ontario. Leptospira titer increased with parity. Amongst herds not vaccinated against Leptospira, the proportions of herds with > or = 1 animal seropositive to serovar hardjo, icterohaemorrhagiae, or pomona were 45%, 42%, and 58%, respectively.

Effects of modified-live bovine viral diarrhea virus vaccines containing either type 1 or types 1 and 2 BVDV on heifers and their offspring after challenge with noncytopathic type 2 BVDV during gestation

OBJECTIVE

To compare the efficacy of modified-live virus (MLV) vaccines containing either type 1 bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) or types 1 and 2 BVDV in protecting heifers and their offspring against infection associated with heterologous noncytopathic type 2 BVDV challenge during gestation.

DESIGN

Randomized controlled study.

ANIMALS

160 heifers and their offspring.

PROCEDURES

After inoculation with a placebo vaccine, 1 or 2 doses of an MLV vaccine containing type 1 BVDV, or 1 dose of an MLV vaccine containing both types 1 and 2 BVDV, heifers were bred naturally and challenge exposed with a type 2 BVDV field isolate between 62 and 104 days of gestation. Pregnancies were monitored; after parturition, virus isolation and immunohistochemical analyses of ear-notch specimens were used to determine whether calves were persistently infected. Blood samples were collected at intervals from heifers for serologic evaluation and virus isolation.

RESULTS

Persistent infection was detected in 18 of 19 calves from heifers in the control group and in 6 of 18 calves and 7 of 19 calves from heifers that received 1 or 2 doses of the type 1 BVDV vaccine, respectively. None of the 18 calves from heifers that received the type 1-type 2 BVDV vaccine were persistently infected.

CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE

Results suggest that the incidence of persistent BVDV infection among offspring from dams inoculated with 1 dose of the MLV vaccine containing types 1 and 2 BVDV was decreased, compared with 1 or 2 doses of the MLV vaccine containing only type 1 BVDV.

Efficacy of strain RB51 vaccine in heifers against experimental brucellosis

With the goal of providing an additional tool for controlling bovine brucellosis in Brazil and evaluating the full calf dose in adult cattle, the efficacy of the rough Brucella abortus strain RB51 vaccine was tested in heifers. Thirty-three females of approximately 24 months of age were divided in two groups: one group (n=20) received the RB51 vaccine and the other group (n=13) were used as non-vaccinated control. Animals in the vaccinated group were split in two sub-groups. One sub-group (n=12) was vaccinated subcutaneously with 1.5x10(10) colony forming units (CFU) of RB51 at Day 0 of the experiment and the other sub-group (n=8) was vaccinated subcutaneously with 1.6x10(10) CFU of RB51 at 60 days of gestation (Day 260 of the experiment). All cattle were challenged between 6 and 7 months of pregnancy with 3x10(8) CFU of the virulent strain 2308 of B. abortus by the conjunctival route. Vaccination with RB51 vaccine did not result in the production of any antibodies against the O-side chain of lipopolysaccharide (LPS), as measured by conventional serological tests (rose bengal plate agglutination test (RBPAT), standard tube agglutination test (STAT), and 2-mercaptoethanol test (2ME)). A total of 25% cumulative incidence of abortions was found in the vaccinated group, whereas in the control group the cumulative incidence was 62%. B. abortus RB51 was not isolated from any sample, and no abortions were produced by RB51 vaccination of females at 60 days of pregnancy. The results indicate that vaccination with RB51 prevented 59.4% of abortions, 58.6% of cow infections, and 61.0% of fetal infections. The relative risk (RR) revealed that non-vaccinated animals have 2.462 (95% CI 1.029-5.889) times higher risk of aborting than RB51-vaccinated animals.

A 4-year-old Thoroughbred mare was evaluated because of placental abnormalities and a retained placental remnant.

CLINICAL FINDINGS

Microbial culture of the placenta yielded pure growth of Amycolatopsis spp. Histologic examination of the placenta revealed a focally expanding chorionitis with intralesional gram-positive filamentous bacilli and multifocal allantoic adenomatous hyperplasia on the apposing allantoic surface.

TREATMENT AND OUTCOME

Treatment with lavage and oxytocin resulted in expulsion of the placental remnant within hours of parturition. The mare did not become pregnant again despite multiple breedings. The foal appeared healthy but died of complications during an elective surgical procedure at 7 weeks of age.

CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE

To the author's knowledge, all previously confirmed cases of nocardioform placentitis have been in mares bred in the central Kentucky region. Indications that the pathogen in the mare reported here is a different species than that isolated in Kentucky suggest that this is an emerging disease. Mares with nocardioform placentitis usually do not have the same clinical signs as mares with placentitis resulting from an ascending pathogen.
