Abstract
A measurement of the energy dependence of antineutrino disappearance at the Daya Bay reactor neutrino experiment is reported. Electron antineutrinos (ν¯(e)) from six 2.9 GW(th) reactors were detected with six detectors deployed in two near (effective baselines 512 and 561 m) and one far (1579 m) underground experimental halls. Using 217 days of data, 41 589 (203 809 and 92 912) antineutrino candidates were detected in the far hall (near halls). An improved measurement of the oscillation amplitude sin(2)2θ(13)=0.090(-0.009)(+0.008) and the first direct measurement of the ν¯(e) mass-squared difference |Δm(ee)2|=(2.59(-0.20)(+0.19))×10(-3) eV2 is obtained using the observed ν¯(e) rates and energy spectra in a three-neutrino framework. This value of |Δm(ee)2| is consistent with |Δm(μμ)2| measured by muon neutrino disappearance, supporting the three-flavor oscillation model.

Abstract
Radiation is an important issue, which should be carefully treated during the design and commissioning of an ion source. Measurements show that X-rays are generated around the ceramics column of an extraction system when the source is powered up to 30 kV. The X-ray dose increases greatly when a beam is extracted. Inserting the ceramic column into a metal vacuum box is a good way to block X-ray emission for those cases. Moreover, this makes the online test of an intense H(+) ion beam with energy up to 100 keV possible. However, for deuteron ion source commissioning, neutron and gamma-ray radiation become a serious topic. In this paper, we will describe the design of the extraction system and the radiation doses of neutrons and gamma-rays measured at different D(+) beam energy during our 2.45 GHz deuteron electron cyclotron resonance ion source commissioning for PKUNIFTY (PeKing University Neutron Imaging FaciliTY) project at Peking University.

Abstract
PKUNIFTY (PeKing University Neutron Imaging FaciliTY), a thermal neutron imaging facility based on a 2 MeV RFQ accelerator, has been constructed at Peking University. Its deuteron injector, which consists of a 2.45 GHz permanent magnet electron cyclotron resonance (PMECR) deuteron ion source and a two-solenoid low energy beam transport (LEBT), aims at producing and delivering 50 mA, 50 keV deuteron beam with a duty factor of 10% (1 ms, 100 Hz). In the preliminary tests of RFQ accelerator, the ECR ion source and LEBT are required to operate at various duty factors (from 1% to 10%). The deuteron ion source has been tested with different pulse widths for this reason. In order to optimize the transmission parameters, the beam current at the exit of RFQ as a function of solenoids tuning and steering magnets tuning are carefully studied. The beam emittance at the entrance of RFQ has been measured with space charge compensation by different argon gas (RG) pressure from 1.6 × 10(-4) Pa to 4.7 × 10(-3) Pa. The measuring results show the best compensating pressure is 3.5 × 10(-3) Pa with a minimal normalized rms emittance of 0.12 pi mm mrad. During the commissioning, we found the purity of deuteron gas is an important factor which severely affects ECR discharge and plasma intensity inside the ion source chamber. The detailed experimental results obtained during the commissioning are discussed in this paper.

Abstract
At Peking University (PKU) we have developed several 2.45 GHz Permanent Magnet Electron Cyclotron Resonance ion sources for PKUNIFTY, SFRFQ, Coupled RFQ&SFRFQ, and Dielectric-Wall Accelerator (DWA) projects (respectively, 50 mA of D(+), 10 mA of O(+), 10 mA of He(+), and 50 mA of H(+)). In order to improve performance of these ion sources, it is necessary to better understand the principal factors that influence the plasma density and the atomic ion fraction. Theoretical analysis about microwave transmission and cut-off inside the discharge chamber were carried out to study the influence of the discharge chamber diameters. As a consequence, experimental studies on plasma density and ion fraction with different discharge chamber sizes have been carried out. Due to the difficulties in measuring plasma density inside the discharge chamber, the output beam current was measured to reflect the plasma density. Experimental results show that the plasma density increases to the maximum and then decreases significantly as the diameter changed from 64 mm to 30 mm, and the atomic ion fraction has the same tendency. The maximum beam intensity was obtained with the diameter of 35 mm, but the maximum atomic ion fraction with a diameter of 40 mm. The experimental results are basically accordant with the theoretical calculation. Details are presented in this paper.

Abstract
Some evidence has shown an increased number of activated microglial cells in patients with schizophrenia. It is hypothesized that activated microglia may contribute to the pathogenesis of schizophrenia. We injected saline or Granulocyte-Macrophage Colony-Stimulating Factor (GM-CSF) into the ventral hippocampus in adult Sprague-Dawley rats via micro-pump; at the same time, the rats were intragastrically administrated with saline or minocycline once a day for 14 consecutive days. Then, behavioral tests were examined and microglia were assessed using immunohistochemistry method. GM-CSF-injected group showed significant behavioral deficits (hyperlocomotion, social interaction deficits, prepulse inhibition (PPI) deficits). There was a dramatic increase of the number of activated microglial cells in the hippocampus and other brain regions such as cerebral cortex and thalamus compared with those in saline-injected group in immunohistochemistry. Minocycline was able to ameliorate deficits of social interaction and PPI but not hyperlocomotion. Minocycline was also able to inhibit the microglial activation. In conclusion, intrahippocampal administration of GM-CSF in adult rats may serve as a potential schizophrenia animal model, which may be related with the microglia hypothesis of schizophrenia.

Abstract
We report the beam energy (sqrt[sNN]=7.7-200 GeV) and collision centrality dependence of the mean (M), standard deviation (σ), skewness (S), and kurtosis (κ) of the net-proton multiplicity distributions in Au+Au collisions. The measurements are carried out by the STAR experiment at midrapidity (|y|<0.5) and within the transverse momentum range 0.4<pT<0.8 GeV/c in the first phase of the Beam Energy Scan program at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. These measurements are important for understanding the quantum chromodynamic phase diagram. The products of the moments, Sσ and κσ2, are sensitive to the correlation length of the hot and dense medium created in the collisions and are related to the ratios of baryon number susceptibilities of corresponding orders. The products of moments are found to have values significantly below the Skellam expectation and close to expectations based on independent proton and antiproton production. The measurements are compared to a transport model calculation to understand the effect of acceptance and baryon number conservation and also to a hadron resonance gas model.

Abstract
Two irreversible inhibitors, iodoacetamide and diethylpyrocarbonate, were used to select intraspecific fusion products of two mushroom species, Coprinus cinereus and Schizophyllum commune. Iodoacetamide was the more suitable inhibitor because it gave a low breakage frequency and low survival rate of the cells in the inactivation experiments. Fusion-induced by polyethylene glycol and electro-fusion were compared and, under optimal conditions, gave fusion frequencies of 16.7% to 50.0% and 6.9% to 8.4%, respectively. All fusion progeny were heterokaryons (dikaryons) and had clamp connections. There were no differences in the morphology and fruiting ability of the fusion progeny and those of the heterokaryons generated from mating.

Abstract
Adult skeletal muscle regeneration involves serial steps among which inflammation in the wounded area is critical for the healing process. However, accelerated tissue regeneration and the inhibition of excessive inflammation are always the targets of tissue engineering, because excessive inflammation in the early stage can impede the regeneration in the following step. In this study, a feasible ibuprofen-loaded poly (L-lactide) (PLLA) fibrous scaffold was designed to evaluate the ability of preventing excessive inflammatory response and promoting regeneration using 35 Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats. The cytotoxicity assay of PLLA and ibuprofen-loaded PLLA fibrous scaffolds (IBU/PLLA) showed that there were no significant cell cytotoxicity on L6 cells. The histological results showed that the IBU/PLLA group had slighter inflammation than PLLA and control groups during the whole process. In the later stage, the regeneration process of the IBU/PLLA group took place on the 7th day, which was almost more than one week earlier than the PLLA and control groups. qRT-PCR analysis further displayed that the IBU/PLLA group had a lower level of inflammatory factors and higher expression of repair factors than the PLLA and control groups, especially from the 7th day, and lasted until the 21st day. Furthermore, there were no statistical differences between the PLLA group and the control group from histological results and qRT-PCR analysis. Taken together, through the muscle wound healing process, the results demonstrated that the ibuprofen-loaded PLLA fibrous scaffolds had better control of excessive inflammation and faster process of healing than non-ibuprofen-loaded groups.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To comprehensively analyze the relationship between human exposure to extremely low frequency electromagnetic fields (ELF-EMFs) and breast cancer and to discuss the potential risk of ELF-EMFs to human breast cancer. MATERIALS AND METHODS Sixteen research reports of case-control studies which were published from 2000 to 2007 were collected. The fixed effect model (FEM) or the random effect model (REM) was chosen to calculate total ORs depending on the outcomes of the test of homogeneity (Q test): the subgroup was analyzed with the menopause and the non-menopause. OUTCOME Sixteen research outcome was ORDL = 1.10, 95% CI = (1.01, 1.20), the OR(MH) of the non-menopause status group was 1.25, 95% CI = (1.05, 1.49), the OR(MH) of the menopause status group was OR(MH) = 1.04, 95% CI = (0.93, 1.18). CONCLUSION The authors found that ELF-EMFs may be increase the risk of human breast cancer. The women's exposure to ELF-EMFs may be the risk factor of breast cancer when they are non-menopausal.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the diagnostic value of different patient positions during expiratory low-dose thin-layer multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) for detecting air trapping after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT). PATIENTS AND METHODS Expiratory lung MDCT scanning was done for 51 post-allo-HSCT patients in both the supine and prone positions to determine if they had air trapping lesions. We assessed the volume fraction of an air trapping region (CT value of ≤700HU at expiratory phase) against the whole lung area with a GE workstation and graded these results. RESULTS In the supine position, multiple air trapping lesions were found in 16 of 51 patients, which were scattered and mainly distributed in the dorsal sides of both lower lobes. In the prone position, in addition to these 15 patients, air trapping lesions were also found in 11 other patients, which were mainly distributed in the anterior load-bearing area of the lung lower lobes and lobe-connected areas. Compared with that in the supine position, the graded score of air trapping in the prone position was significantly different (p = 0.006). CONCLUSIONS When performing expiratory thin-layer MDCT for patients with chronic rejection reactions after allo-HSCT, scanning in the prone position should also be performed, not only to more accurately observe lesions, but also for a preliminary evaluation of air trapping severity. This provides a basis for an early clinical diagnosis and treatment.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the relationship between blood glucose fluctuation and macrovascular dysfunction. PATIENTS AND METHODS Eighty-eight type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients with or without coronary heart disease (CHD) and 30 healthy control subjects were recruited. Glycosylated hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), fasting insulin (FIns), and C-reaction protein (CRP) and some other general clinical variables were measured. A 72-hour continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) and brachial artery endothelium-dependent flow-mediated dilation (FMD) assessment were performed. The glucose excursion, MAGE (mean amplitude of glycemic excursions), LAGE (largest amplitude of glycemic excursions), MPPGE (mean postprandial glycemic excursions), MODD (absolute means of daily differences), and IAUC70 (incremental area under the curve below 70 mg/dl) during the CGM were analyzed. Correlations between the various variables were analyzed. RESULTS Enhanced blood glucose fluctuation was observed in T2DM patients with CHD as compared to other participants. And blood glucose fluctuation was correlated with FMD, CRP and HOMA-IR. CONCLUSIONS Blood glucose fluctuation is an important factor that affects inflammatory response and possibly induces CHD in T2DM patients.

Abstract
Aberrant immunity response contributes to the pathogenesis of acute-on-chronic hepatitis B liver failure. Tumour necrosis factor-α-induced protein-8 like-2 (TIPE2) is a recently identified molecular to maintain immune homoeostasis, but its role in acute-on-chronic hepatitis B liver failure (ACHBLF) is unknown. We detected TIPE2 mRNA levels in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from 56 patients with ACHBLF, 60 chronic hepatitis B patients, 24 healthy controls and analysed its role in disease severity and prognosis. TIPE2 mRNA expression in patients with ACHBLF was higher than that of patients with chronic infection or healthy controls. In patients with ACHBLF, TIPE2 mRNA level was positively correlated with serum total bilirubin, international normalized ratio and model for end-stage liver disease scores. Furthermore, the level of TIPE2 mRNA was significantly higher in nonsurvivors than survivors in patients with ACHBLF. The mRNA level of TIPE2 gradually decreased week by week in survivors accompanied by recovery from patients with ACHBLF, while its expression sustained at high levels in nonsurvivors. TIPE2 mRNA level after lipopolysaccharide (LPS) stimulation ex vivo in patients with ACHBLF was higher compared with controls and patients with chronic infection. Meanwhile, cytokines ex vivo secreted were measured as a marker of immune activation. After LPS stimulation, interleukin (IL)-6 and tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-α mRNA expression were reduced in patients with ACHBLF, and a significantly negative correlation was found between TIPE2 and TNF-α mRNA levels. In conclusion, our results identified the potential role of TIPE2 in predicting disease progression and prognosis in patients with ACHBLF by negative regulating of cell-mediated immunity.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to identify feature genes that are associated with hereditary hemochromatosis (HHC; iron overload) in cardiac and skeletal muscle of mice. First, the expression profile GSE9726 was downloaded from Gene Expression Omnibus database which included 12 samples. Then the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified by R language. Furthermore, the KUPS software was used to identify relationships in interactions among common DEGs in the cardiac and skeletal muscles. We then used the EASE software to obtain enriched pathways in a gene interaction network. Finally, we used the plugins of the Cytoscape software, i.e., Mcode and Bingo, to conduct module analysis. By comparing diseased and normal tissue samples, 5 and 6 genes in the cardiac and skeletal muscles, respectively, were identified as DEGs. We observed that the S100a8 and S100a9 genes were common DEGs in both tissues examined. In addition, we constructed an interaction network with common DEGs and their interacting components, and identified S100a8 and S100a9 as being associated with immune responses. In view of the relationship between the early stage of myelodysplastic syndrome and the immune system, we hypothesize that the expression of the S100a8 and S100a9 genes is a feature that can be used for diagnosis during the early stage of the myelodysplastic syndrome and that the 2 genes could be used as targets in treating this disease.

Abstract
Clinical reports have highlighted a role for retinoids in the etiology of mood disorders. Although we had shown that recruitment of the nuclear receptor retinoic acid receptor-α (RAR-α) to corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) promoter is implicated in activation of the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, further insight into how retinoids modulate HPA axis activity is lacking. Here we show that all-trans retinoic acid (RA)-induced HPA activation involves impairments in glucocorticoid receptor (GR) negative feedback. RA was applied to rats chronically through intracerebroventricular injection. A 19-day RA exposure induced potent HPA axis activation and typical depression-like behavior. Dexamethasone failed to suppress basal corticosterone (CORT) secretion, which is indicative of a disturbed GR negative feedback. In the hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus, increased CRH⁺ and c-fos⁺ cells were found while a negative R-2⁺/ER⁺ correlation was present between the number of RAR-α⁺ and GR⁺ cells. This was paralleled by increased RAR-α and decreased GR protein expression in the hypothalamus. Additional in vitro studies confirmed that RA abolished GR-mediated glucocorticoid-induced suppression of CRH expression, indicating a negative cross-talk between RAR-α and GR signaling pathways. Finally, the above changes could be rapidly normalized by treatment with GR antagonist mifepristone. We conclude that in addition to the 'classic' RAR-α-mediated transcriptional control of CRH expression, disturbances in GR negative feedback constitute a novel pathway that underlies RA-induced HPA axis hyperactivity. The rapid normalization by mifepristone may be of potential clinical interest in this respect.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Chromodomain helicase/ATPase DNA binding protein 1-like gene (CHD1L) is involved in malignancies. However, the role of CHD1L in gastric cancer (GC) has not been elucidated. The aim of this study is to explore the clinical role of CHD1L in GC. METHODS The gene and protein expression levels of CHD1L were detected by quantitative real-time PCR and Western blot analysis in fresh samples of GC and paired adjacent noncancerous tissue (n = 34). We evaluated the CHD1L expression by immunohistochemistry in a large number of GC patients (n = 616) and paired adjacent noncancerous tissues from December 1, 2004 to December 1, 2008. The correlations of CHD1L expression with clinicopathological features and clinical outcome were analyzed. RESULTS The gene and protein expression levels of CHD1L were higher in fresh samples of GC than in paired adjacent noncancerous tissues as determined by quantitative real-time PCR and Western blot analysis. Immunohistochemical analysis showed that positive expression rates of CHD1L in GC and paired adjacent noncancerous tissues were 58.7 % (361/616) and 7.3 % (45/616), respectively. CHD1L positivity was significantly associated with clinical stage and distant metastasis. GC patients with positive CHD1L expression had shorter overall survival than those with negative CHD1L expression. Multivariate analysis showed that CHD1L was an independent prognostic marker for overall survival [Hazard Ratio (HR) = 5.952, 95 % confidence interval (CI) = 3.194-11.187, P = 0.0043]. CONCLUSION These results indicated that CHD1L could serve as a prognostic marker for GC.
