Abstract
Polygalacturonase inhibiting proteins (PGIPs) are plant proteins involved in the inhibition of polygalacturonases (PGs), cell-wall degrading enzymes often secreted by phytopathogenic fungi. Previously, we confirmed that PGIP2 from Phaseolus vulgaris (PvPGIP2) can inhibit the growth of Aspergillus niger and Botrytis cinerea on agar plate. In this study, we further validated the feasibility of using PGIP as an environmental and ecological friendly agent to prevent fungal infection post-harvest. We found that application of either purified PGIP (full length PvPGIP2 or truncated tPvPGIP2_5-8), or PGIP-secreting Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains can effectively inhibit fungal growth and necrotic lesions on tobacco leaf. We also examined the effective amount and thermostability of PGIP when applied on plants. A concentration of 0.75 mg/mL or higher can significantly reduce the area of B. cinerea lesions. The activity of full-length PvPGIPs is not affected after incubation at various temperatures ranging from -20 to 42 °C for 24 h, while truncated tPvPGIP2_5-8 lost some efficacy after incubation at 42 °C. Furthermore, we have also examined the efficacy of PGIP on tomato fruit. When the purified PvPGIP2 proteins were applied to tomato fruit inoculated with B. cinerea at a concentration of roughly 1.0 mg/mL, disease incidence and area of disease had reduced by more than half compared to the controls without PGIP treatment. This study explores the potential of PGIPs as exogenously applied, eco-friendly fungal control agents on fruit and vegetables post-harvest.

Abstract
Disulfidptosis refers to a specific programmed cell death process characterized by the accumulation of disulfides. It has recently been reported in several cancers. However, the impact of disulfidptosis-related long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) on malignant tumors has remained largely unknown. In the present work, we screened prognostic disulfidptosis-related lncRNAs and studied their effects on lung adenocarcinoma. Relevant clinical data of lung adenocarcinoma cases were retrieved from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database. RNA sequencing was used to identify differentially expressed disulfidptosis-related lncRNAs within lung adenocarcinoma. In addition, prognostic disulfidptosis-related lncRNAs were obtained through univariate Cox regression analysis. LASSO-COX was used to construct new disulfidptosis-related lncRNA signatures. Different statistical approaches were used to validate the practicability and accuracy of the disulfidptosis-related lncRNAs signatures. Furthermore, several bioinformatic approaches were used to study relevant heterogeneities in biological processes and pathways of diverse risk groups. Reverse transcriptase-quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) was conducted to analyze the expression of disulfidptosis-related lncRNAs. Finally, seven disulfidptosis-related lncRNA signatures were identified in lung adenocarcinoma cells. The prognosis prediction model constructed efficiently predicted patient survival. Subgroup analysis revealed significant differences in immune cell proportion, including T follicular helper cells and M0 macrophages. In addition, in vitro experimental results demonstrated significant differences in disulfidptosis-related lncRNAs. Altogether, the six disulfidptosis-related lncRNA signatures could serve as a potential prognostic biomarker for lung adenocarcinoma. Furthermore, these can be used as a prediction model in individualized immunotherapy for lung adenocarcinoma.

Abstract
Epigenetic approaches in direct correlation with assessment of critical genetic mutations in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) are currently very intensive, as the epigenetic components underlying NSCLC development and progression have attained high recognition. In this level of research, established human NSCLC cell lines as well as experimental animals are widely used to detect novel biomarkers and pharmacological targets to treat NSCLC. The epigenetic background holds a great potential for the identification of epi-biomarkers for treatment response however, it is highly complex and requires precise definition as these phenomena are variable between NSCLC subtypes and systems origin. We engaged an in-depth characterization of non-coding (nc)RNAs prevalent in human KRAS-mutant NSCLC cell lines A549 and H460 and mouse KRAS-mutant NSCLC tissue by Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) and quantitative Real Time PCRs (qPCRs). Also, the transcription factor (TF) LRF, a known epigenetic silencer, was examined as a modulator of non-coding RNAs expression. Finally, interacting networks underlying epigenetic variations in NSCLC subtypes were created. Data derived from our study highlights the divergent epigenetic profiles of NSCLC of human and mouse origin, as well as the significant contribution of 12qf1: 109,709,060-109,747,960 mouse chromosomal region to micro-RNA upregulated species. Furthermore, the novel epigenetic miR-148b-3p/lncPVT1/ZBTB7A axis was identified, which differentiates human cell line of lung adenocarcinoma from large cell lung carcinoma, two characteristic NSCLC subtypes. The detailed recording of epigenetic events in NSCLC and combinational studies including networking between ncRNAs and TFs validate the identification of significant epigenetic features, prevailing in NSCLC subtypes and among experimental models. Our results enrich knowledge in the field and empower research on the epigenetic prognostic biomarkers of the disease progression, NSCLC subtypes discrimination and advancement to patient-tailored treatments.

Abstract
Water reuse is an effective way to solve the issues of current wastewater increments and water resource scarcity. Ultrafiltration, a promising method for water reuse, has the characteristics of low energy consumption, easy operation, and high adaptability to coupling with other water treatment processes. However, emerging organic contaminants (EOCs) in municipal wastewater cannot be effectively intercepted by ultrafiltration, which poses significant challenges to the effluent quality and sustainability of ultrafiltration process. Here, we develop a cobalt single-atom catalyst-tailored ceramic membrane (Co1-NCNT-CM) in conjunction with an activated peroxymonosulfate (PMS) system, achieving excellent EOCs degradation and anti-fouling performance. An interfacial reaction mechanism effectively mitigates membrane fouling through a repulsive interaction with natural organic matter. The generation of singlet oxygen at the Co-N3-C active sites through a catalytic pathway (PMS→PMS∗→OH∗→O∗→OO∗→1O2) exhibits selective oxidation of phenols and sulfonamides, achieving >90% removal rates. Our findings elucidate a multi-layered functional architecture within the Co1-NCNT-CM/PMS system, responsible for its superior performance in organic decontamination and membrane maintenance during secondary effluent treatment. It highlights the power of integrating Co1-NCNT-CM/PMS systems in advanced wastewater treatment frameworks, specifically for targeted EOCs removal, heralding a new direction for sustainable water management.

Abstract
The complex interactions were performed among non-pharmaceutical interventions, vaccinations, and hosts for all epidemics in mainland China during the spread of COVID-19. Specially, the small-scale epidemic in the city described by SVEIR model was less found in the current studies. The SVEIR model with control was established to analyze the dynamical and epidemiological features of two epidemics in Jinzhou City led by Omicron variants before and after Twenty Measures. In this study, the total population (N) of Jinzhou City was divided into five compartments: the susceptible (S), the vaccinated (V), the exposed (E), the infected (I), and the recovered (R). By surveillance data and the SVEIR model, three methods (maximum likelihood method, exponential growth rate method, next generation matrix method) were governed to estimate basic reproduction number, and the results showed that an increasing tendency of basic reproduction number from Omicron BA.5.2 to Omicron BA.2.12.1. Meanwhile, the effective reproduction number for two epidemics were investigated by surveillance data, and the results showed that Jinzhou wave 1 reached the peak on November 1 and was controlled 7 days later, and that Jinzhou wave 2 reached the peak on November 28 and was controlled 5 days later. Moreover, the impacts of non-pharmaceutical interventions (awareness delay, peak delay, control intensity) were discussed extensively, the variations of infection scales for Omicron variant and EG.5 variant were also discussed. Furthermore, the investigations on peaks and infection scales for two epidemics in dynamic zero-COVID policy were operated by the SVEIR model with control. The investigations on public medical requirements of Jinzhou City and Liaoning Province were analyzed by using SVEIR model without control, which provided a possible perspective on variant evolution in the future.

Abstract
There has been extensive research on the biological recycling of PET waste to address the issue of plastic waste pollution, with ethylene glycol (EG) being one of the main components recovered from this process. Therefore, finding ways to convert PET monomer EG into high-value products is crucial for effective PET waste recycling. In this study, we successfully engineered Escherichia coli to utilize EG and produce glycolic acid (GA), expecting to facilitate the biological recycling of PET waste. The engineered E. coli, able to utilize 10 g/L EG to produce 1.38 g/L GA within 96 h, was initially constructed. Subsequently, strategies based on overexpression of key enzymes and knock-out of the competing pathways are employed to enhance EG utilization along with GA biosynthesis. An engineered E. coli, characterized by the highest GA production titer and substrate conversion rate, was obtained. The GA titer increased to 5.1 g/L with a yield of 0.75 g/g EG, which is the highest level in the shake flake experiments. Transcriptional level analysis and metabolomic analysis were then conducted, revealing that overexpression of key enzymes and knock-out of the competing pathways improved the metabolic flow in the EG utilization. The improved metabolic flow also leads to accelerated synthesis and metabolism of amino acids.

Abstract
Urban surface water pollution poses significant threats to aquatic ecosystems and human health. Conventional nitrogen removal technologies used in urban surface water exhibit drawbacks such as high consumption of carbon sources, high sludge production, and focus on dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration while neglecting the impact of DO gradients. Here, we show an ecological filter walls (EFW) that removes pollutants from urban surface water. We utilized a polymer-based three-dimensional matrix to enhance water permeability, and emergent plants were integrated into the EFW to facilitate biofilm formation. We observed that varying aeration intensities within the EFW's aerobic zone resulted in distinct DO gradients, with an optimal DO control at 3.19 ± 0.2 mg L-1 achieving superior nitrogen removal efficiencies. Specifically, the removal efficiencies of total organic carbon, total nitrogen, ammonia, and nitrate were 79.4%, 81.3%, 99.6%, and 79.1%, respectively. Microbial community analysis under a 3 mg L-1 DO condition revealed a shift in microbial composition and abundance, with genera such as Dechloromonas, Acinetobacter, unclassified_f__Comamonadaceae, SM1A02 and Pseudomonas playing pivotal roles in carbon and nitrogen elimination. Notably, the EFW facilitated shortcut nitrification-denitrification processes, predominantly contributing to nitrogen removal. Considering low manufacturing cost, flexible application, small artificial trace, and good pollutant removal ability, EFW has promising potential as an innovative approach to urban surface water treatment.

Abstract
In the intricate field of cancer biology, researchers are increasingly intrigued by the emerging role of exosomal long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) due to their multifaceted interactions, complex modulation mechanisms, and potential therapeutic applications. These exosomal lncRNAs, carried within extracellular vesicles, play a vital partin tumorigenesis and disease progression by facilitating communication networks between tumor cells and their local microenvironment, making them an ideal candidates for use in a liquid biopsy approach. However, exosomal lncRNAs remain an understudied area, especially in cancer biology. Therefore this review aims to comprehensively explore the dynamic interplay between exosomal lncRNAs and various cellular components, including interactions with tumor-stroma, immune modulation, and drug resistance mechanisms. Understanding the regulatory functions of exosomal lncRNAs in these processes can potentially unveil novel diagnostic markers and therapeutic targets for cancer. Additionally, the emergence of RNA-based therapeutics presents exciting opportunities for targeting exosomal lncRNAs, offering innovative strategies to combat cancer progression and improve treatment outcomes. Thus, this review provides insights into the current understanding of exosomal lncRNAs in cancer biology, highlighting their crucial roles, regulatory mechanisms, and the evolving landscape of therapeutic interventions. Furthermore, we have also discussed the advantage of exosomes as therapeutic carriers of lncRNAs for the development of personalized targeted therapy for cancer patients.

Abstract
Ring-array photoacoustic tomography (PAT) system has been widely used in noninvasive biomedical imaging. However, the reconstructed image usually suffers from spatially rotational blur and streak artifacts due to the non-ideal imaging conditions. To improve the reconstructed image towards higher quality, we propose a concept of spatially rotational convolution to formulate the image blur process, then we build a regularized restoration problem model accordingly and design an alternating minimization algorithm which is called blind spatially rotational deconvolution to achieve the restored image. Besides, we also present an image preprocessing method based on the proposed algorithm to remove the streak artifacts. We take experiments on phantoms and in vivo biological tissues for evaluation, the results show that our approach can significantly enhance the resolution of the image obtained from ring-array PAT system and remove the streak artifacts effectively.

Abstract
To demonstrate predation and potential impacts of raccoons on various species, a total of 108 raccoons from aquatic-associated nature reserves and natural areas in three federal states of Germany, Hesse (n = 36), Saxony-Anhalt (n = 36) and Brandenburg (n = 36), were investigated from a dietary ecological perspective in the present study. Fecal analyses and stomach content examinations were conducted for this purpose. Additionally, as a supplementary method for analyzing the dietary spectrum of raccoons, the parasite fauna was considered, as metazoan parasites, in particular, can serve as indicators for the species and origin of food organisms. While stomach content analyses allow for a detailed recording of trophic relationships solely at the time of sampling, parasitological examinations enable inferences about more distant interaction processes. With their different developmental stages and heteroxenous life cycles involving specific, sometimes obligate, intermediate hosts, they utilize the food web to reach their definitive host. The results of this study clearly demonstrate that spawning areas of amphibians and reptiles were predominantly utilized as food resources by raccoons in the study areas. Thus, common toad (Bufo bufo), common newt (Lissotriton vulgaris), grass frog (Rana temporaria), and grass snake (Natrix natrix) were identified as food organisms for raccoons. The detection of the parasite species Euryhelmis squamula, Isthmiophora melis, and Physocephalus sexalatus with partially high infestation rates also suggests that both amphibians and reptiles belong to the established dietary components of raccoons from an ecological perspective, as amphibians and reptiles are obligate intermediate hosts in the respective parasitic life cycles of the detected parasites. The study clearly demonstrates that raccoons have a significant impact on occurrence-sensitive animal species in certain areas and, as an invasive species, can exert a negative influence on native species and ecosystems.

Abstract
Zoonotic nematodes of the genus Trichinella are foodborne parasites that have a global distribution in wild carnivores and omnivores, with spillover and spillback into domestic livestock and people, with concomitant trade and health consequences. Historically, most human cases were linked to domestic pigs infected with Trichinella spiralis, but under current high biosecurity swine production in many countries, wildlife have become a more important source of human trichinellosis. The aim of this review is to update the global distribution of Trichinella species and genotypes reported in wildlife, as well as reported human outbreaks from the consumption of wildlife. Using several online databases and by "snowballing" references, hundreds of reports of Trichinella spp. in wildlife published between January 1991 and December 2023 provide an important update to the host and geographic range for each of the recognized 13 species/genotypes, grouped by continent. Surveillance effort was highest in Europe and North America, while Africa, Asia, Central and South America have had limited surveillance, in some instances with human cases serving as sentinels of transmission in a region. Dozens of human outbreaks are described, with wild boars (Sus scrofa) being the most frequently implicated wildlife species in human outbreaks globally. Bears are an important source of infection in North America, for wildlife tourism, and importation of bear meat has also been implicated in multicountry outbreaks. The largest study limitation was the dearth of molecular identification of larvae in both wildlife surveillance studies and human outbreaks, particulary in under-studied regions. We highlight the need for enhanced molecular epidemiological approaches to outbreaks of this important foodborne parasite, and emphasize the need for a One Health approach to manage Trichinella spp. which transmit among terrestrial and marine wildlife (including migratory birds), pigs, horses, and people, often across large geographic scales and borders.

Abstract
We here describe the location of anisakid third stage larvae in Atlantic herring Clupea harengus L. caught in the North Sea in August 2023. We further demonstrate how industrial processing (mechanical gutting, removal of entrails, head, tail, hypaxial anterior musculature and vertebral column) reduces the overall infection and worm load in the musculature. The isolated anisakid larvae were identified as Anisakis simplex sensu stricto by a combination of morphometrics and molecular methods (PCR of rDNA and mtDNA, sequencing, BLAST analysis). As a baseline we examined a total of 75 specimens of freshly caught and ungutted herring and showed a positive correlation between host size (fish length and weight) and infection level. The overall prevalence of infection was 84 %, the mean intensity 11.3 (range 1-38 parasites per fish) and the abundance 9.52. The main part of the overall worm population was associated with stomach and pyloric caeca in the body cavity (77 %) and only 5 % was found in the musculature. Larvae occurred in the hypaxial part of the musculature (21), the epaxial part (7 worms) and the caudal part (5 worms). The prevalence of muscle infection was 28 % and the mean intensity 1.6 (range 1-5) parasites per fish and abundance 0.44 parasites per fish. In order to assess the effect of industrial processing on worm occurrence in the fish we examined a total of 67 specimens of herring, from exactly the same batch, but following processing. This included removal of organs in the body cavity, cutting the lower part of the hypaxial segment but leaving the right and left musculature connected by dorsal connective tissue. Five out of these fish carried one larva (prevalence 7.5%, mean intensity 1, abundance 0.07 larvae per fish), and these worms were located in the ventral part of the anterior musculature (2), in the central part of the anterior musculature (2) and one larva in the central part of the caudal musculature. The industrial processing reduced the overall occurrence (abundance) of worms in the fish from 9.52 to 0.07 (136 times reduction) and the occurrence in the musculature from 0.44 to 0.07 (6.28 times reduction). The overall prevalence was reduced from 84 % to 7.5 % (11.2 times reduction). Muscle infection prevalence fell from 28 % to 7.5 % (3.7 times reduction). We then followed another batch of herring following a marinating process (11% NaCl for 24 h and subsequent incubation in acetic acid and vinegar) by artificially digesting the flaps during week 1-8. Although a total of 31 larvae were recovered from 144 fish examined no live nematode larvae were isolated. The importance of fish handling, processing and marination for consumer safety is discussed.

Abstract
Background The differentiation between benign and malignant breast tumors extends beyond morphological structures to encompass functional alterations within the nodules. The combination of photoacoustic (PA) imaging and radiomics unveils functional insights and intricate details that are imperceptible to the naked eye. Purpose This study aims to assess the efficacy of PA imaging in breast cancer radiomics, focusing on the impact of peritumoral region size on radiomic model accuracy. Materials and methods From January 2022 to November 2023, data were collected from 358 patients with breast nodules, diagnosed via PA/US examination and classified as BI-RADS 3-5. The study used the largest lesion dimension in PA images to define the region of interest, expanded by 2 mm, 5 mm, and 8 mm, for extracting radiomic features. Techniques from statistics and machine learning were applied for feature selection, and logistic regression classifiers were used to build radiomic models. These models integrated both intratumoral and peritumoral data, with logistic regressions identifying key predictive features. Results The developed nomogram, combining 5 mm peritumoral data with intratumoral and clinical features, showed superior diagnostic performance, achieving an AUC of 0.950 in the training cohort and 0.899 in validation. This model outperformed those based solely on clinical features or other radiomic methods, with the 5 mm peritumoral region proving most effective in identifying malignant nodules. Conclusion This research demonstrates the significant potential of PA imaging in breast cancer radiomics, especially the advantage of integrating 5 mm peritumoral with intratumoral features. This approach not only surpasses models based on clinical data but also underscores the importance of comprehensive radiomic analysis in accurately characterizing breast nodules.

Abstract
Background Outdoor aeroallergens, such as pollens and molds, are known triggers of asthma exacerbation; however, few studies have examined children's aeroallergen response based on sensitization. Objective Our aim was to compare the relative impact of aeroallergen levels on asthma exacerbation between pediatric patients with asthma who tested positive or negative for sensitization to particular allergens. Methods A case-crossover design study was conducted to examine associations between outdoor aeroallergen levels and asthma exacerbation events among children living in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, who were treated within a large pediatric care network. Sensitization to common allergens was characterized in a subset of patients with asthma exacerbation who had undergone skin prick testing (5.5%). Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% CIs were estimated in all patients with asthma exacerbation and in those sensitized or not sensitized to aeroallergens. Results Children who were sensitized to a particular allergen had higher odds of asthma exacerbation with exposure to the allergen (ie, early-season tree pollen, oak tree pollen, early-season weed pollen, and late-season molds) than did all patients with asthma or nonsensitized patients. For example, the association between early-season tree pollen and asthma exacerbation among sensitized children (>90th percentile vs ≤25th, OR = 2.28 [95% CI = 1.23-4.22]) was considerably stronger than that estimated among all patients (OR = 1.34 [95% CI = 1.19-1.50]), and it was also substantially different from the lack of association seen among nonsensitized children (OR = 0.89 [95% CI = 0.51-1.55] [P value for heterogeneity = .03]). Conclusion More prevalent allergy testing may be useful for prevention of asthma exacerbation by informing interventions targeted to sensitized children and tailored for particular aeroallergens.

Abstract
Parasites are important component of communities in a forest ecosystem with profound effects on trophic interactions such as food web. Modification of the forest structure (e.g. changes in species composition and abundance of key species) can have a strong impact on the occurrence, diversity, and abundance of parasites, with subsequent repercussions for ecosystem functioning. In this study, we compared the occurrence and abundance of wild rodents' ectoparasites from forest sites invaded and uninvaded by an invasive tree, Maesopsis eminii in Amani Nature Forest Reserve, Tanzania. Three large plots (40 m × 100 m) were randomly established in each forest sites invaded and uninvaded by M. eminii. In each plot, 50 Sherman traps were systematically placed at 10 m interval for capturing wild rodents through a capture-mark-recapture technique. Wilcox rank sum test was used to compare for differences in the abundance of infested rodents and ectoparasites between the invaded and uninvaded forest sites. A total of 297 individual rodents were captured and screened for ectoparasites, including 174 rodents from uninvaded forest site and 123 rodents from invaded forest site. The number of infested rodents were significantly (W = 8592, P < 0.001) greater in uninvaded forest site (66.27%) than in the invaded forest site (36.2%). Furthermore, a significant greater number of Echinolaelaps echidninus (W = 1849, P < 0.01) and Dinopsyllus ellobius (W = 2800.5, P < 0.05) ectoparasites were found in uninvaded as compared to the invaded forest sites. The results of this study suggest that the invasion and dominance by, M. eminii in Amani Nature Reserve has created unfavorable conditions for rodents and ectoparasites and therefore impacting the diversity and function of the forest ecosystem. We recommend prevention of further introduction of the M. eminii outside their natural range and mitigating the impact of the established M. eminii in Amani Forest Nature Reserve.

Abstract
Our knowledge of parasites in wildlife remains limited, primarily due to restricted access to samples, especially of parasites from protected species. This present study contributes to the comprehension of the enigmatic world of helminths of African wild mammals and cestode biodiversity by combining both molecular and morphological analysis. Cestode samples were opportunistically collected from 77 individual definitive hosts in South Africa, Namibia and Ethiopia, encompassing 15 different species of wild African carnivores and additionally domestic cats. The analysis revealed 32 different cyclophyllidean species of which 21 (65.6 %) represent previously unknown genetic entities. They belong to the families Mesocestoididae, Hymenolepididae, Dipylidiidae and Taeniidae. Here we cover the non-taeniid cestodes, while the taeniids will be addressed in a separate publication. Three of the non-taeniid species uncovered in this study could be assigned to the genus Mesocestoides and were isolated from servals and domestic cats. The white-tailed mongoose was found to be a suitable host for a species belonging to the Hymenolepididae, which was identified as Pseudandrya cf. mkuzii. Both feline and canine genotypes of Dipylidium caninum were detected in domestic cats, the canine genotype also in an African wolf. In addition to these, a novel species of Dipylidium was discovered in an aardwolf. Lastly, four distinct species of Joyeuxiella were found in this study, revealing a cryptic species complex and emphasizing the need for a taxonomic reassessment of this genus. Despite the limited scope of our study in terms of geography and sample size, the results highlight that biodiversity of cestodes in African wild mammals is grossly under-researched and follow-up studies are urgently required, in particular linking morphology to gene sequences.

Abstract
Wild boars have a worldwide distribution and also have major economic, veterinary, and medical importance. Due to a small amount of data on the parasitic fauna of wild boars in the Russian Far East, especially in Prymorye territory, a post-mortem parasitic examination of 20 wild boars was provided. The general prevalence was 25%, and a total of six helminth species, including one larva stage, were found. The most prevalent helminth species were Gnathostoma doloresi (25%) and Metastrongylus elongatus (20%). Followed by Trichuris suis and Ascaris suum (15%). The lowest prevalence was registered for Cysticercus tenuicollis (the larvae stage of T. hydatigena). Parasites were found in each region, with the highest prevalence registered in the Chuguevskii region. Totally 100% of adult boars were positive for helminth infections, instead of 60% of young specimens. Some helminthes found (G. doloresi, T. suis, A. suum) have zoonotic potential and can be involved in the circulation of human parasitic diseases, especially in rural areas. Further research work on parasitic infections in wild boars in Prymorye is necessary due to the high prevalence of helminthes in wild boars.

Abstract
Meat adulteration and admixing are prevalent malpractices observed in processed and raw meat samples, where the consumption of adulterated meat has been associated with food allergies, financial losses, and consumer distrust. Meat authentication is pivotal to address these concerns. The meat authenticity can be determined through genetic, protein, and immunological markers and advanced detection methods. However, these methods often target a single species and lack the specificity to distinguish closely related species. Here, in the present study, we have developed a multiplex detection method based on the species-specific primers and probes, that can target four meat species in one reaction. The developed method amplifies the mitochondrial genomic regions of chicken, pork, sheep and goat using TaqMan multiplex probe-based RT-qPCR assay. Unique pairs of species-specific primers and probes that target specific mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) regions of each species were designed and screened for specificity and sensitivity. The detection limit for species identification using the designed primers in real-time qPCR assays was 0.1 picogram per microliter (pg/μL) DNA detected in singleplex reaction and facilitates the simultaneous detection of closely related species, such as goat and sheep. Further, DNA-based probes were utilized in a multiplex real-time qPCR assay to identify chicken, pork, sheep and goat DNA in a single tube reaction. The multiplex assay was validated for raw and processed meat products, demonstrating its applications in ensuring the quality of meat products and safeguarding consumer interests.

Abstract
Insects such as the black soldier fly (BSF) are recently being studied as food sources to address concerns about how to meet the food demand of the growing world population, as conventional production lines for meat proteins are currently unsustainable sources. Studies have been conducted evaluating the use of insect proteins to produce extruded foods such as expanded snacks and meat analogues. However, this field of study is still quite new and not much has been studied beyond digestibility and growth performance. The purpose of this work was to evaluate the compatibility of protein extracted from BSF flour with corn flour starch within an extruded balanced shrimp feed model through molecular dynamics simulations, for which cohesive energy density and solubility parameter (δ) of both components were determined. The calculations' results for the protein molecule systems yielded an average δ of 14.961 MPa0.5, while the δ for starch was calculated to be 23.166 MPa0.5. The range of difference between both δ (10 > δ > 7) suggests that the interaction of the BSF protein with corn starch is of a semi-miscible nature. These results suggest that it is possible to obtain a stable starch-protein mixture through the extrusion process.

Abstract
The link between salivary composition and sensitivity to astringency as a function of age has still not been established. In this work, we propose the hypothesis that ageing leads to changes in the concentration of salivary proline-rich proteins (PRPs), which alters the astringency perception threshold with age. To test this hypothesis, astringency sensitivity to tannic acid and saliva was assessed in 30 elderly people and 24 young people. Basic PRPs (bPRPs) and glycosylated PRPs (gPRPs) were quantified immunochemically via western blot analysis. The results showed that the amounts of bPRPs and gPRPs were similar between the young and elderly groups. However, a positive correlation between the gPRP amount and astringency threshold was observed only in the young group, while a negative correlation between the bPRP amount and astringency threshold was observed only in the elderly group. This finding suggests differences in the contribution of PRP type to astringency perception as a function of age.

Abstract
Fruit and vegetable wastes are linked to the depletion of natural resources and can pose serious health and environmental risks (e.g. eutrophication, water and soil pollution, and GHG emissions) if improperly managed. Current waste management practices often fail to recover high-value compounds from fruit wastes. Among emerging valorization methods, the utilization of fruit wastes as a feedstock for microalgal biorefineries is a promising approach for achieving net zero waste and sustainable development goals. This is due to the ability of microalgae to efficiently sequester carbon dioxide through photosynthesis, utilize nutrients in wastewater, grow in facilities located on non-arable land, and produce several commercially valuable compounds with applications in food, biofuels, bioplastics, cosmetics, nutraceuticals, pharmaceutics, and various other industries. However, the application of microalgal biotechnology towards upcycling fruit wastes has yet to be implemented on the industrial scale due to several economic, technical, operational, and regulatory challenges. Here, we identify sources of fruit waste along the food supply chain, evaluate current and emerging fruit waste management practices, describe value-added compounds in fruit wastes, and review current methods of microalgal cultivation using fruit wastes as a fermentation medium. We also propose some novel strategies for the practical implementation of industrial microalgal biorefineries for upcycling fruit waste in the future.

Abstract
In this work, we used Raman spectroscopy to identify compounds present at different maturation stages of the exocarp of scarlet eggplant and two banana cultivars, 'prata' and 'nanica'. Raman spectral analyses of both fruits showed bands attributed to phenolic acids, flavonoids, carotenoids, and fatty acids. During the scarlet eggplant's maturation process, Raman spectral profile changes are mainly observed in the carotenoid content rather than flavonoids. Furthermore, it is suggested that naringenin chalcone together with β-carotene determines the orange-red color of the ripe stage. Variations in chemical composition among the maturation stages of bananas were observed predominantly in 'prata' when compared to 'nanica'. In contrast to scarlet eggplant changes in the spectral profile were more evident in the content of the flavonoid/phenolic acids. The in situ analysis was demonstrated to be useful as a guide in selecting bioactive compounds on demand from low-cost horticultural waste.

Abstract
Sugar and fatty acid content are among the important factors that contribute to the intensity of flavor in aromatic coconut. Gaining a comprehensive understanding of the sugar and fatty acid metabolites in the flesh of aromatic coconuts, along with identifying the key synthetic genes, is of significant importance for improving the development of desirable character traits in these coconuts. However, the related conjoint analysis of metabolic targets and molecular synthesis mechanisms has not been carried out in aromatic coconut until now. UPLC-MS/MS combined with RNA-Seq were performed in aromatic coconut (AC) and non-aromatic coconut (NAC) meat at 7, 9 and 11 months. The results showed that D-fructose in AC coconut meat was 3.48, 2.56 and 3.45 fold higher than that in NAC coconut meat. Similarly, D-glucose in AC coconut meat was 2.48, 2.25 and 3.91 fold higher than that in NAC coconut meat. The NAC coconut meat showed a 1.22-fold rise in the content of lauric acid compared to the AC coconut meat when it reached 11 months of age. Myristic acid content in NAC coconut meat was 1.47, 1.44 and 1.13 fold higher than that in AC coconut meat. The palmitic acid content in NAC coconut meat was 1.62 and 1.34 fold higher than that in AC coconut meat. The genes SPS, GAE, GALE, GLCAK, UGE, UGDH, FBP, GMLS, PFK, GPI, RHM, ACC, FabF, FatA, FabG, and FabI exhibited a negative correlation with D-fructose (r = -0.81) and D-glucose (r = -0.99) contents, while showing a positive correlation (r = 0.85-0.96) with lauric acid and myristic acid. Furthermore, GALE, GLCAK, FBP, GMLS, and ACC displayed a positive correlation (r = 0.83-0.94) with palmitic acid content. The sugar/organic acid ratio exhibited a positive correlation with SPS, GAE, UGE, FabF, FabZ and FabI.

Abstract
Using high-throughput metagenomics on commercial microbial fermentation products, DNA from a new unauthorized genetically modified microorganism (GMM), namely the GM B. licheniformis strain producing alpha-amylase (GMM alpha-amylase2), was recently discovered and characterized. On this basis, a new qPCR method targeting an unnatural association of sequences specific to the GMM alpha-amylase2 strain was designed and developed in this study, allowing to strengthen the current GMM detection strategy. The performance of the newly developed qPCR method was assessed for its specificity and sensitivity to comply with the minimum performance requirements established by the European Network of GMO Laboratories for GMO analysis. Moreover, the transferability of the in house validated qPCR method was demonstrated. Finally, its applicability was confirmed by a pilot market surveillance of GMM contaminations conducted for the first time on 40 alpha-amylase food enzyme products labelled as containing alpha-amylase. This pilot market surveillance allowed also to highlight numerous contaminations with GMM alpha-amylase2, including frequent cross-contaminations with other GMM strains previously characterized. In addition, the presence of full-length AMR genes, raising health concerns, was also reported.

Abstract
The synthetic pathways of some phenolics compounds in asparagus have been reported, however, the diversified phenolics compounds including their modification and transcription regulation remains unknown. Thus, multi-omics strategies were applied to detect the phenolics profiles, contents, and screen the key genes for phenolics biosynthesis and regulation in asparagus. A total of 437 compounds, among which 204 phenolics including 105 flavonoids and 82 phenolic acids were detected with fluctuated concentrations in roots (Rs), spears (Ss) and flowering twigs (Fs) of the both green and purple cultivars. Based on the detected phenolics profiles and contents correlated to the gene expressions of screened synthetic enzymes and regulatory TFs, a full phenolics synthetic pathway of asparagus was proposed for the first time, essential for future breeding of asparagus and scaled healthy phenolics production using synthetic biological strategies.

Abstract
This study identified and monitored the levels of aflatoxins (B1 and B2) produced by Aspergillus flavus isolate VKMN22 (OP355447) in maize samples sourced from a local shop in Johannesburg, South Africa. Maize samples underwent controlled incubation after initial rinsing, and isolates were identified through morphological and molecular methods. In another experiment, autoclaved maize grains were intentionally re-inoculated with the identified fungal isolate using spore suspension (106 spore/mL), after which 1 g of the contaminated maize sample was inoculated on PDA media and cultured for seven days. The aflatoxin concentrations in the A. flavus contaminated maize inoculated on culture media was monitored over seven weeks and then measured using liquid chromatography-mass spectroscopy (LC-MS). Results confirmed the successful isolation of A. flavus strain VKMN22 with accession number OP355447, which consistently produced higher levels of AFB1 compared to AFB2. AF concentrations increased from week one to five, then declined in week six and seven. AFB1 levels ranged from 594.3 to 9295.33 µg/kg (week 1-5) and then reduced from 5719.67 to 2005 µg/kg in week six and seven), while AFB2 levels ranged from 4.92 to 901.67 µg/kg (weeks 1-5) and then degraded to 184 µg/kg in week six then 55.33 µg/kg (weeks 6-7). Levene's tests confirmed significantly higher mean concentrations of AFB1 compared to AFB2 (p ≤ 0.005). The study emphasizes the importance of consistent biomonitoring for a dynamic understanding of AF contamination, informing accurate prevention and control strategies in agricultural commodities thereby safeguarding food safety.

Abstract
The concentration of atmospheric CO2 has exceeded 400 ppm, surpassing its natural variability and raising concerns about uncontrollable shifts in the carbon cycle, leading to significant climate and environmental impacts. A promising method to balance carbon levels and mitigate atmospheric CO2 rise is through photocatalytic CO2 reduction. Titanium dioxide (TiO2), renowned for its affordability, stability, availability, and eco-friendliness, stands out as an exemplary catalyst in photocatalytic CO2 reduction. Various strategies have been proposed to modify TiO2 for photocatalytic CO2 reduction and improve catalytic activity and product selectivity. However, few studies have systematically summarized these strategies and analyzed their advantages, disadvantages, and current progress. Here, we comprehensively review recent advancements in TiO2 engineering, focusing on crystal engineering, interface design, and reactive site construction to enhance photocatalytic efficiency and product selectivity. We discuss how modifications in TiO2's optical characteristics, carrier migration, and active site design have led to varied and selective CO2 reduction products. These enhancements are thoroughly analyzed through experimental data and theoretical calculations. Additionally, we identify current challenges and suggest future research directions, emphasizing the role of TiO2-based materials in understanding photocatalytic CO2 reduction mechanisms and in designing effective catalysts. This review is expected to contribute to the global pursuit of carbon neutrality by providing foundational insights into the mechanisms of photocatalytic CO2 reduction with TiO2-based materials and guiding the development of efficient photocatalysts.

Abstract
Calvarial haemangiomas are benign, vascular tumours of the skull involving parietal and frontal bones. Mostly these lesions remain asymptomatic, and present with cosmetic deformity, headache, uncommon neurological symptoms and reported as case reports and case series. The radiological appearance can range from sessile growing intradiploically to globular and the lesions may extend outwards or inwards after eroding the outer and inner tables of the skull. "Sunburst appearance" and "Wagon-wheel sign" are classical radiological findings but the lesions may present simply as a lytic expansile or even sclerotic calvarial mass. Because of varied clinical presentation and atypical radiological characteristics, the final diagnosis can be clinched by histology only. In selected cases where these lesions are not cosmetically acceptable, en bloc resection with tumour free margins followed by cranioplasty is the treatment of choice. Most reports of calvarial haemangiomas in literature are in the form of case reports.

Abstract
Purpose The study aims to evaluate the role of substance P in cerebral edema and outcomes associated with acute TBI. Method Patients with acute TBI who presented within 6 h and a CT scan showed predominantly cerebral edema were included in the study. Substance P level was assessed from a serum sample collected within 6 h of trauma. We also evaluated the brain-specific gravity using the Brain View software. Result A total of 160 (128 male) patients were recruited. The median serum substance P concentration was 167.89 (IQR: 101.09-238.2). Substance P concentration was high in the early hours after trauma (p = 0.001). The median specific gravity of the entire brain was 1.04. Patients with a low Glasgow coma scale (GCS) at admission had a high concentration of the substance P. In the univariate analysis, low GCS, elevated serum concentrations of substance P level, high Rotterdam grade, high cerebral edema grade, a high international normalized ratio value, and high blood sugar levels were associated with poor outcomes at six months. In logistic regression analysis, low GCS at admission, high cerebral edema grade, and elevated blood sugar level were strongly associated with poor outcomes at six months. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve was 0.884 (0.826-0.941). Conclusion Serum substance P is strongly associated with the severity of cerebral edema after TBI. However, brain-specific gravity does not directly correlate with posttraumatic cerebral edema severity. Serum substance P does not influence the clinical outcome of traumatic brain injury.

Abstract
The vulnerable plaques in atherosclerosis can cause severe outcome with great danger of acute cardiovascular events. Thus, timely diagnosis and treatment of vulnerable plaques in early stage can effectively benefit the clinical management of atherosclerosis. In this work, a targeting theranostic strategy on early-stage vulnerable plaques in atherosclerosis is realized by a LAID nanoplatform with X-CT and fluorescent dual-mode imaging and lipid-inflammation integrated regulation abilities. The iodinated contrast agents (ICA), phenylboronic acid modified astaxanthin and oxidized-dextran (oxDEX) jointly construct the nanoparticles loaded with the lipid-specific probe LFP. LAID indicates an active targeting to plaques along with the dual-responsive disassembly in oxidative stress and acidic microenvironment of atherosclerosis. The X-CT signals of ICA execute the location of early-stage plaques, while the LFP combines with lipid cores and realizes the recognition of vulnerable plaques. Meanwhile, the treatment based on astaxanthin is performed for restraining the progression of plaques. Transcriptome sequencing suggests that LAID can inhibit the lipid uptake and block NF-κB pathway, which synergistically demonstrates a lipid-inflammation integrated regulation to suppression the plaques growing. The in vivo investigations suggest that LAID delivers a favorable theranostics to the early-stage vulnerable plaques, which provides an impressive prospect for reducing the adverse prognosis of atherosclerosis.

Abstract
The mitophagy process, a type of macroautophagy, is the targeted removal of mitochondria. It is a type of autophagy exclusive to mitochondria, as the process removes defective mitochondria one by one. Mitophagy serves as an additional level of quality control by using autophagy to remove superfluous mitochondria or mitochondria that are irreparably damaged. During spermatogenesis, mitophagy can influence cell homeostasis and participates in a variety of membrane trafficking activities. Crucially, it has been demonstrated that defective mitophagy can impede spermatogenesis. Despite an increasing amount of evidence suggesting that mitophagy and mitochondrial dynamics preserve the fundamental level of cellular homeostasis, little is known about their role in developmentally controlled metabolic transitions and differentiation. It has been observed that male infertility is a result of mitophagy's impact on sperm motility. Furthermore, certain proteins related to autophagy have been shown to be present in mammalian spermatozoa. The mitochondria are the only organelle in sperm that can produce reactive oxygen species and finally provide energy for sperm movement. Furthermore, studies have shown that inhibited autophagy-infected spermatozoa had reduced motility and increased amounts of phosphorylated PINK1, TOM20, caspase 3/7, and AMPK. Therefore, in terms of reproductive physiology, mitophagy is the removal of mitochondria derived from sperm and the following preservation of mitochondria that are exclusively maternal.

Abstract
Ecological water replenishment (EWR) is an important strategy for river restoration globally, but timely evaluation of its ecological effects at a large spatiotemporal scale to further adjust the EWR schemes is of great challenge. Here, we examine the impact of EWR on microeukaryotic plankton communities in three distinct river ecosystems through environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding. The three ecosystems include a long-term cut-off river, a short-term connected river after EWR, and long-term connected rivers. We analyzed community stability by investigating species composition, stochastic and deterministic dynamics interplay, and ecological network robustness. We found that EWR markedly reduced the diversity and complexity of microeukaryotic plankton, altered their community dynamics, and lessened the variation within the community. Moreover, EWR disrupted the deterministic patterns of community organization, favoring dispersal constraints, and aligning with trends observed in naturally connected rivers. The shift from an isolated to a temporarily connected river appeared to transition community structuring mechanisms from deterministic to stochastic dominance, whereas, in permanently connected rivers, both forces concurrently influenced community assembly. The ecological network in temporarily connected rivers post-EWR demonstrated significantly greater stability and intricacy compared to other river systems. This shift markedly bolstered the resilience of the ecological network. The eDNA metabarcoding insights offer a novel understanding of ecosystem resilience under EWR interventions, which could be critical in assessing the effects of river restoration projects throughout their life cycle.

Abstract
Background Maternal depression is considered a major contributor to morbidity and mortality in pregnancy. A population at risk are U.S. born or immigrant Hispanic women, and few prenatal depression or immune studies have focused on this population. Objective The research questions for the study were 1) What are the occurrences, risk factors and outcomes associated with depression in Hispanic pregnant women in the United States and 2) What are the associations of plasma immune cytokines and prenatal depression in this population. Study design Women of self-reported Hispanic ethnicity were born in the continental United States or foreign-born. Screening of potential participants (n = 690) at a first prenatal clinic visit consisted of antibody testing for Toxoplasma gondii antibodies in a larger grant, and only the women with antibody levels below the cutoff for T. gondii positivity (N = 536) were included in the present study. All participants completed a health and demographic questionnaire, the Edinburgh Postpartum Depression (EPDS) scale, the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), and the Medical Outcomes Study Social Support (MOS) scale. We surveyed electronic health records (EHR) for risk factors and adverse pregnancy outcomes in the sample. We further measured physical and mental health and seven plasma immune cytokines at four study visits during pregnancy in a longitudinal subsample (N = 128). Results The frequency of EPDS scores of 10 (depression risk) or above was 18.6 % at the time of enrollment. Socioeconomic factors such as less education, greater unemployment, and U.S. born nativity were associated with greater depression risk, but these relationships became insignificant when we corrected for false discovery rate. Depression scores were not associated with adverse birth and pregnancy outcomes. The inflammatory cytokine TNF-α was significantly higher across pregnancy in women with depression risk (p < 0.03). Other inflammatory cytokines were higher in depressed women, but only at one time point in mid-pregnancy. Conclusions Prenatal depression occurs in early pregnancy and then declines in Hispanic women. The frequency of depression and stress were higher in U.S. born compared to immigrant Hispanic women. There was an elevation in plasma levels of TNF-α through the pregnancy in depressed women, and elevations in other cytokines, at midpregnancy. The adverse pregnancy outcomes, including preterm delivery, known to be associated with prenatal depression were not present in this cohort.

Abstract
Exosomes, also termed extracellular vesicles (EVs), are an important component of the tumor microenvironment (TME) and exert versatile effects on the molecular communications in the TME of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Exosome-mediated intercellular communication is closely associated with the tumorigenesis and development of HCC. Exosomes can be extracted through ultracentrifugation and size exclusion, followed by molecular analysis through sequencing. Increasing studies have confirmed the important roles of exosome-derived ncRNAs in HCC, including tumorigenesis, progression, immune escape, and treatment resistance. Due to the protective membrane structure of exosomes, the ncRNAs carried by exosomes can evade degradation by enzymes in body fluids and maintain good expression stability. Thus, exosome-derived ncRNAs are highly suitable as biomarkers for the diagnosis and prognostic prediction of HCC, such as exosomal miR-21-5p, miR-221-3p and lncRNA-ATB. In addition, substantial studies revealed that the up-or down-regulation of exosome-derived ncRNAs had an important impact on HCC progression and response to treatment. Exosomal biomarkers, such as miR-23a, lncRNA DLX6-AS1, miR-21-5p, lncRNA TUC339, lncRNA HMMR-AS1 and hsa_circ_0004658, can reshape immune microenvironment by regulating M2-type macrophage polarization and then promote HCC development. Therefore, by controlling exosome biogenesis and modulating exosomal ncRNA levels, HCC may be inhibited or eliminated. In this current review, we summarized the recent findings on the role of exosomes in HCC progression and analyzed the relationship between exosome-derived ncRNAs and HCC diagnosis and treatment.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to elucidate the nature of T cell abnormalities in bipolar disorder (BD). With the use of multicolor flow cytometry, we first quantified the composition of the different memory and pro-inflammatory immune subpopulations in samples of 58 patients with BD and compared them to 113 healthy controls. Second, to assess if cytomegalovirus infection was related to the resulted immune subpopulation compositions in the two groups, we measured cytomegalovirus-specific antibodies in serum. Thirdly, we assessed differences between the two groups in the serum levels of the immune cell differentiation factor interleukin-7. Compared to healthy controls, patients showed significantly higher T helper-17, T regulatory and T central memory cells (CD4+ and CD8+). Besides, patients showed significantly lower CD4+ T effector memory and CD4+ T effector memory re-expressing RA cells. Cytomegalovirus infection was not related to the observed abnormalities, with the exception of T helper-17 cells. This immune subpopulation was significantly higher only in patients seropositive to cytomegalovirus infection. Finally, interleukin-7 levels were significantly lower in BD compared to healthy controls. In conclusion, the aberrant levels of T memory cell populations in BD may suggest a T cell differentiation abnormality. The role of interleukin-7 in this putative abnormality should be further investigated.

Abstract
This case report illustrates the presence of intranodal thyroid tissues in ipsilateral cervical lymph nodes after hemithyroidectomy for multinodular goiter in an adolescent patient. It highlights the rare radiological finding of thyroid tissues within cervical lymph nodes detected by ultrasonography and computed tomography, which is a great mimicker of nodal metastasis.

Abstract
Global water bodies are increasingly imperiled by nitrate pollution, primarily originating from industrial waste, agricultural runoffs, and urban sewage. This escalating environmental crisis challenges traditional water treatment paradigms and necessitates innovative solutions. Electro-catalysis, especially utilizing copper-based catalysts, known for their efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and eco-friendliness, offer a promising avenue for the electro-catalytic reduction of nitrate to ammonia. In this review, we systematically consolidate current research on diverse copper-based catalysts, including pure Cu, Cu alloys, oxides, single-atom entities, and composites. Furthermore, we assess their catalytic performance, operational mechanisms, and future research directions to find effective, long-term solutions to water purification and ammonia synthesis. Electro-catalysis technology shows the potential in mitigating nitrate pollution and has strategic importance in sustainable environmental management. As to the application, challenges regarding complexity of the real water, the scale-up of the commerical catalysts, and the efficient collection of produced NH3 are still exist. Following reseraches of catalyst specially on long term stability and in situ mechanisms are proposed.

Abstract
Tenofovir, as nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs), is used to prevent and cure HIV/AIDS. Ample evidence confirmed that the nephrotoxicity of tenofovir has been linked to mitochondrial dysfunction. It seems that transplantation with healthy mitochondria instead of damaged mitochondria may be a beneficial approach to therapy. Therefore, it decided to investigate the impact of mitotherapy on tenofovir against renal proximal tubular cells (RPTCs) toxicity by measurement of oxidative stress and cytotoxicity biomarkers and restoring of mitochondrial function on isolated mitochondria. EC50 of tenofovir was achieved at 40 μM following 2 h incubation in Earle's solution (pH = 7.4; 37 °C). Freshly isolated mitochondria (80 μg/ml) were added to damage RPTCs affected by tenofovir in treated groups. One Way ANOVA analysis showed that healthy mitochondrial transplantation decreased oxidative stress biomarkers following tenofovir toxicity in RPTCs. Our data revealed that mitotherapy makes cell survival possible in RPTCs affected by tenofovir. In addition, it supposed that a novel and ideal strategy for the treatment of chemicals-induced nephrotoxicity.

Abstract
As an endogenous signaling molecule, carbon monoxide (CO) has emerged as an increasingly promising option regarding as gas therapy due to its positive pharmacological effects in various diseases. Owing to the gaseous nature and potential toxicity, it is particularly important to modulate the CO release dosages and targeted locations to elucidate the biological mechanisms of CO and facilitate its clinical applications. Based on these, diverse CO-releasing molecules (CORMs) have been developed for controlled release of CO in biological systems. However, practical applications of these CORMs are limited by several disadvantages including low stability, poor solubility, weak releasing controllability, random diffusion, and potential toxicity. In light of rapid developments and diverse advantages of nanomedicine, abundant nanomaterials releasing CO in controlled ways have been developed for therapeutic purposes across various diseases. Due to their nanoscale sizes, diversified compositions and modified surfaces, vast CO-releasing nanomaterials (CORNMs) have been constructed and exhibited controlled CO release in specific locations under various stimuli with better pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics. In this review, we present the recent progress in CORNMs according to their compositions. Following a concise introduction to CO therapy, CORMs and CORNMs, the representative research progress of CORNMs constructed from organic nanostructures, hybrid nanomaterials, inorganic nanomaterials, and nanocomposites is elaborated. The basic properties of these CORNMs, such as active components, CO releasing mechanisms, detection methods, and therapeutic applications, are discussed in detail and listed in a table. Finally, we explore and discuss the prospects and challenges associated with utilizing nanomaterials for biological CO release.

Abstract
Background The Entrapped Temporal Horn (ETH) is characterized by localized enlargement of the temporal horn of the lateral ventricle of the brain. This study aimed to investigate the factors, development, prognosis, and effective treatment. Methods Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines, a systematic search was conducted in major research databases. The inclusion criteria included patients of all ages with TTH diagnosis in cohort studies, case series, and case reports. Results Our study included 160 patients and 49 studies. The major causes of TTH were neoplastic lesions (42.3%), infections (22.3%), and cystic disease (13.08%). Of these cases, 71 were unrelated to cranial surgery, while 89 were unrelated to prior surgeries. Headache was the most common symptom (41.91%), followed by seizures (13.20%), drowsiness (12.50%) and memory loss (11.00%). Surgery was not required in 17 patients. Fenestration of the trapped temporal horn was performed in 24 patients, while VP/VA shunt surgeries were performed in the majority (57 patients) owing to favorable outcomes, lower revision rates, and extensive experience. However, TTH recurred in six of the 21 patients who underwent endoscopic ventriculocisternostomy. Tumors were the main cause, and isolated headache was the most frequent symptom. Ventriculoperitoneal shunts (VPS) are preferred because of their positive outcomes, lower revision rates, and wider expertise. Tumors near the trigonal area pose a higher risk. Conclusion Although TTH remains a rare condition, VPS continues to be the most widely preferred procedure among surgeons.

Abstract
Liver cancer stem cells were found to rely on glycolysis as the preferred metabolic program. Phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase 1 (PCK1), a gluconeogenic metabolic enzyme, is down-regulated in hepatocellular carcinoma and is closely related to poor prognosis. The oncogenesis and progression of tumors are closely related to cancer stem cells. It is not completely clear whether the PCK1 deficiency increases the stemness of hepatoma cells and promotes the oncogenesis of hepatocellular carcinoma. Herein, the results showed that PCK1 inhibited the self-renewal property of hepatoma cells, reduced the mRNA level of cancer stem cell markers, and inhibited tumorigenesis. Moreover, PCK1 increased the sensitivity of hepatocellular carcinoma cells to sorafenib. Furthermore, we found that PCK1 activated the Hippo pathway by enhancing the phosphorylation of YAP and inhibiting its nuclear translocation. Verteporfin reduced the stemness of hepatoma cells and promoted the pro-apoptotic effect of sorafenib. Thus, combined treatment with verteporfin and sorafenib may be a potential anti-tumor strategy in hepatocellular carcinoma.

Abstract
Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are one of the potential molecules in response to a hypomagnetic field (HMF), and exposure to an HMF for eight weeks led to an increase in ROS levels in the whole hippocampus area in mice. ROS are mainly derived from the byproducts of mitochondrial metabolism. However, previous in vivo studies mostly focus on the influence of one time point of HMF exposure on the mouse hippocampus and lack comparative studies on the effects of different durations of HMF exposure on the mouse hippocampus. Here, we investigated the effects of different durations of HMF on the number of active mitochondria and ROS levels in mouse hippocampus. Compared with the geomagnetic field (GMF) group, we found that the number of active mitochondria in the hippocampus was significantly reduced during the sixth week of HMF exposure, whereas the number of active mitochondria was significantly reduced and the ROS levels was significantly increased during the eighth week of HMF exposure. The number of active mitochondria gradually decreased and ROS levels gradually increased in both GMF and HMF groups with prolonged exposure time. In addition, the expression level of the PGC-1α gene in the hippocampus, the main regulator of mitochondrial biogenesis, decreased significantly in the eighth week of HMF exposure. These results reveal that the changes in active mitochondria number and ROS levels were dependent on the durations of HMF exposure, and prolonged exposure to HMF exacerbates these changes.

Abstract
Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children (MIS-C) is a secondary immune manifestation of COVID-19 involving multiple organ systems in the body, resulting in fever, skin rash, abdominal pain, nausea, shock, and cardiac dysfunction that often lead to hospitalization. Although many of these symptoms resolve following anti-inflammatory treatment, the long-term neurological and psychiatric sequelae of MIS-C are unknown. In this review, we will summarize two domains of the MIS-C disease course, 1) Neuroinflammation in the MIS-C brain and 2) Psychosocial disruptions resulting from stress and hospitalization. In both domains, we present existing clinical findings and hypothesize potential connections to psychiatric outcomes. This is the first review to conceptualize a holistic framework of psychiatric risk in MIS-C patients that includes neuroinflammatory and psychosocial risk factors. As cases of severe COVID-19 and MIS-C subside, it is important for clinicians to monitor outcomes in this vulnerable patient population.

Abstract
Neurosurgeons receive extensive technical training, which equips them with the knowledge and skills to specialise in various fields and manage the massive amounts of information and decision-making required throughout the various stages of neurosurgery, including preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative care and recovery. Over the past few years, artificial intelligence (AI) has become more useful in neurosurgery. AI has the potential to improve patient outcomes by augmenting the capabilities of neurosurgeons and ultimately improving diagnostic and prognostic outcomes as well as decision-making during surgical procedures. By incorporating AI into both interventional and non-interventional therapies, neurosurgeons may provide the best care for their patients. AI, machine learning (ML), and deep learning (DL) have made significant progress in the field of neurosurgery. These cutting-edge methods have enhanced patient outcomes, reduced complications, and improved surgical planning.

Abstract
Introduction Optimal management of transverse sacral fractures (TSF) remains inconclusive. These injuries may present with neurological deficits including cauda equina syndrome. We present our series of laminectomy for acute TSF with cauda equina compression. Methods This was a retrospective chart review of all patients that underwent sacral laminectomy for treatment of cauda equina compression in acute TSF at our institution between 2007 through 2023. Results A total of 9 patients (5 male and 4 female) underwent sacral laminectomy to decompress the cauda equina in the setting of acute high impact trauma. Surgeries were done early within a mean time of 5.9 days. All but one patient had symptomatic cauda equina syndrome. In one instance surgery was applied due to significant canal stenosis present on imaging in a patient with diminished mental status not allowing proper neurological examination. Torn sacral nerve roots were repaired directly when possible. All patients regained their neurological function related to the sacral cauda equina on follow up. The rate of surgical site infection (SSI) was 33%. Conclusion Acute early sacral laminectomy and nerve root repair as needed was effective in recovering bowel and bladder function in patients after high impact trauma and TSF with cauda equina compression. A high SSI rate may be reduced by delaying surgery past 1 week from trauma, but little data exists at this time for clear recommendations.

Abstract
Purpose Use of the electronic health record (EHR) has motivated the need for data standardization. A gap in knowledge exists regarding variations in existing terminologies for defining diabetic retinopathy (DR) cohorts. This study aimed to review the literature and analyze variations regarding codified definitions of DR. Design Literature review and quantitative analysis. Subjects Published manuscripts. Methods Four graders reviewed PubMed and Google Scholar for peer-reviewed studies. Studies were included if they used codified definitions of DR (e.g., billing codes). Data elements such as author names, publication year, purpose, data set type, and DR definitions were manually extracted. Each study was reviewed by ≥ 2 authors to validate inclusion eligibility. Quantitative analyses of the codified definitions were then performed to characterize the variation between DR cohort definitions. Main Outcome Measures Number of studies included and numeric counts of billing codes used to define codified cohorts. Results In total, 43 studies met the inclusion criteria. Half of the included studies used datasets based on structured EHR data (i.e., data registries, institutional EHR review), and half used claims data. All but 1 of the studies used billing codes such as the International Classification of Diseases 9th or 10th edition (ICD-9 or ICD-10), either alone or in addition to another terminology for defining disease. Of the 27 included studies that used ICD-9 and the 20 studies that used ICD-10 codes, the most common codes used pertained to the full spectrum of DR severity. Diabetic retinopathy complications (e.g., vitreous hemorrhage) were also used to define some DR cohorts. Conclusions Substantial variations exist among codified definitions for DR cohorts within retrospective studies. Variable definitions may limit generalizability and reproducibility of retrospective studies. More work is needed to standardize disease cohorts. Abstract
Budd-Chiari syndrome is an uncommon disorder characterized by occlusion of hepatic veins. It can lead to portal hypertension. Most common causes of this syndrome are hypercoagulability states. Transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt is often not possible given the portal venous thrombosis. In these cases, direct intrahepatic portocaval shunt, involving the creation of an access between the portal vein and the systemic circulation via the intrahepatic inferior vena cava has proven to be a feasible alternative, and can improve portal hypertension in these patients. Herein, we present a case of a 37-year-old woman diagnosed with Budd-Chiari syndrome that was successfully treated with percutaneous ultrasound (US)-guided direct intrahepatic portocaval shunt.

Abstract
An anomalous origin of the right coronary artery has been documented in up to 0.92% of the general population, which is more common than an anomalous origin of the left coronary artery. We present a case of an elderly hypertensive man who developed mild dyspnoea on exertion for 3 months with associated retro-sternal pain as well as occasional palpitation which all tend to subside at rest. An electrocardiogram showed evidence of left atrial enlargement. A coronary computed tomographic angiogram was acquired with a 160-slice scanner which revealed the right coronary artery to originate from the left aortic sinus with a retro-aortic pattern of anatomical course. Vascular wall calcifications were noted with multilevel luminal narrowing on the left anterior descending however distal opacification was adequate. Our case further depicts the reason for keeping in mind anatomical variations while evaluating cardiac pathologies even among Black Africans.
