Abstract
Using a sample of 1.3 × 10(9) J/ψ events collected with the BESIII detector, we report the first observation of η(')→π(+)π(-)π(+)π(-) and η(')→π(+)π(-)π(0)π(0). The measured branching fractions are B(η(')→π(+)π(-)π(+)π(-)) = [8.53 ± 0.69(stat.) ± 0.64(syst.)]×10(-5) and B(η(')→π(+)π(-)π(0) π(0)) = [1.82 ± 0.35(stat.) ± 0.18(syst.)] × 10(-4), which are consistent with theoretical predictions based on a combination of chiral perturbation theory and vector-meson dominance.

Abstract
Development and selection of an ideal scaffold is of importance for tissue engineering. Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyhexanoate) (PHBHHx) is a biocompatible bioresorbable copolymer that belongs to the polyhydroxyalkanoate family. Because of its good biocompatibility, PHBHHx has been widely used as a cell scaffold for tissue engineering. This review focuses on the utilization of PHBHHx-based scaffolds in tissue engineering. Advances in the preparation, modification, and application of PHBHHx scaffolds are discussed.

Abstract
We study the superconducting vortex states induced by the interplay of long-range Pearl repulsion and short-range intervortex attraction using Langevin dynamics simulations. We show that at low temperatures the vortices form an ordered Abrikosov lattice both in low and high fields. The vortices show distinctive modulated structures at intermediate fields depending on the effective intervortex attraction: ordered vortex chain and kagome-like vortex structures for weak attraction; bubble, stripe and antibubble lattices for strong attraction. Moreover, in the regime of the chain state, the vortices display structural transitions from chain to labyrinthine (or disordered chain) and/or to disordered states depending on the strength of the disorder.

Delivery of the Sox9 gene promotes chondrogenic differentiation of human umbilical cord blood-derived mesenchymal stem cells in an in vitro model. ACTA ACUST UNITED AC 2014; 47:279-86. Abstract
SRY-related high-mobility-group box 9 (Sox9) gene is a cartilage-specific
transcription factor that plays essential roles in chondrocyte differentiation and
cartilage formation. The aim of this study was to investigate the feasibility of
genetic delivery of Sox9 to enhance chondrogenic differentiation of human umbilical
cord blood-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hUC-MSCs). After they were isolated from
human umbilical cord blood within 24 h after delivery of neonates, hUC-MSCs were
untreated or transfected with a human Sox9-expressing plasmid or an empty vector. The
cells were assessed for morphology and chondrogenic differentiation. The isolated
cells with a fibroblast-like morphology in monolayer culture were positive for the
MSC markers CD44, CD105, CD73, and CD90, but negative for the differentiation markers
CD34, CD45, CD19, CD14, or major histocompatibility complex class II. Sox9
overexpression induced accumulation of sulfated proteoglycans, without altering the
cellular morphology. Immunocytochemistry demonstrated that genetic delivery of Sox9
markedly enhanced the expression of aggrecan and type II collagen in hUC-MSCs
compared with empty vector-transfected counterparts. Reverse transcription-polymerase
chain reaction analysis further confirmed the elevation of aggrecan and type II
collagen at the mRNA level in Sox9-transfected cells. Taken together, short-term Sox9
overexpression facilitates chondrogenesis of hUC-MSCs and may thus have potential
implications in cartilage tissue engineering.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES To analyze the time trends in total dietary fiber (DF) intake, DF food sources and total DF intake per 1000 kcal (DF density) in Chinese adults aged 45 years and above in the past 20 years. SUBJECTS/METHODS We used the data from the China Health and Nutrition Survey (CHNS) collected in 1991, 1993, 1997, 2000, 2004, 2006, 2009 and 2011. Adults who were aged 45 years and above were included in each round. Water-insoluble DF intake was calculated by substituting the water-insoluble DF content of each food in the Chinese Food Composition Table (FCT) for food intake. Total DF was calculated according to the convert index, which indicates the ratio between total DF and water-insoluble DF for each food group. RESULTS The mean daily total DF intake in males was 19.5 g/day in 1991 and 19.4 g/day in 2011. In females, it was 17.5 g/day in 1991 and 17.6 g/day in 2011. DF density increased in both males and females from 2004 to 2011. It was 9.0 g/1000 kcal in males and 9.5 g/1000 kcal in females in 2011. The major food sources of water-insoluble DF were cereals and vegetables. Communities with different levels of urbanization showed different trends in total DF intake: decreased consumption (2.9 g) in residents of low-urbanization communities and increased consumption (3.1 g) in those of high-urbanization communities. CONCLUSION The average total DF intake in Chinese adults aged 45 years and above remained at a stable level. DF density increased because of slight decrease in energy intake. More public health messages should be disseminated, especially to the residents of low-urbanization communities, so as to increase their daily DF intake to a level close to the recommended DF intake.

Abstract
With data samples collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII storage ring at center-of-mass energies from 4.009 to 4.420 GeV, the process e+e-→ γX(3872) is observed for the first time with a statistical significance of 6.3σ. The measured mass of the X(3872) is (3871.9 ± 0.7s tat ± 0.2 syst) MeV/c(2), in agreement with previous measurements. Measurements of the product of the cross section σ[e+e- → γX(3872)] and the branching fraction B[X(3872)→π+π-J/ψ] at center-of-mass energies 4.009, 4.229, 4.260, and 4.360 GeV are reported. Our measurements are consistent with expectations for the radiative transition process Y(4260) → γX(3872).

Abstract
We report on a study of the process e+ e- → π± (DD*)∓ at sqrt[s] = 4.26 GeV using a 525 pb(-1) data sample collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII storage ring. A distinct charged structure is observed in the (DD*)∓ invariant mass distribution. When fitted to a mass-dependent-width Breit-Wigner line shape, the pole mass and width are determined to be Mpole = (3883.9±1.5(stat)±4.2(syst)) MeV/c2 and Γpole = (24.8±3.3(stat)±11.0(syst)) MeV. The mass and width of the structure, which we refer to as Zc(3885), are 2σ and 1σ, respectively, below those of the Zc(3900) → π± J/ψ peak observed by BESIII and Belle in π+ π- J/ψ final states produced at the same center-of-mass energy. The angular distribution of the πZc(3885) system favors a JP = 1+ quantum number assignment for the structure and disfavors 1- or 0-. The Born cross section times the DD* branching fraction of the Zc(3885) is measured to be σ(e+ e- → π± Zc(3885)∓)×B(Zc(3885)∓ → (DD*)∓) = (83.5±6.6(stat)±22.0(syst)) pb. Assuming the Zc(3885) → DD* signal reported here and the Zc(3900) → πJ/ψ signal are from the same source, the partial width ratio (Γ(Zc(3885) → DD*)/Γ(Zc(3900) → πJ/ψ)) = 6.2±1.1(stat)±2.7(syst) is determined.

Abstract
China's food consumption patterns and eating and cooking behaviours changed dramatically between 1991 and 2011. Macronutrient composition has shifted towards fats, and protein and sodium intakes remain high and potassium intake low. The rapid decline in intake of coarse grains and, later, of refined grains and increases in intake of edible oils and animal-source foods accompanied by major eating and cooking behaviour shifts are leading to what might be characterized as an unhealthy Western type of diet, often based on traditional recipes with major additions and changes. The most popular animal-source food is pork, and consumption of poultry and eggs is increasing. The changes in cooking and eating styles include a decrease in the proportion of food steamed, baked, or boiled, and an increase in snacking and eating away from home. Prior to the last decade, there was essentially no snacking in China except for hot water or green tea. Most recently, the intake of foods high in added sugar has increased. The dietary shifts are affected greatly by the country's urbanization. The future, as exemplified by the diet of the three mega cities, promises major growth in consumption of processed foods and beverages.

Abstract
We study e+e-→π+π-hc at center-of-mass energies from 3.90 to 4.42 GeV by using data samples collected with the BESIII detector operating at the Beijing Electron Positron Collider. The Born cross sections are measured at 13 energies and are found to be of the same order of magnitude as those of e+e-→π+π-J/ψ but with a different line shape. In the π±hc mass spectrum, a distinct structure, referred to as Zc(4020), is observed at 4.02 GeV/c2. The Zc(4020) carries an electric charge and couples to charmonium. A fit to the π±hc invariant mass spectrum, neglecting possible interferences, results in a mass of (4022.9±0.8±2.7) MeV/c2 and a width of (7.9±2.7±2.6) MeV for the Zc(4020), where the first errors are statistical and the second systematic. The difference between the parameters of this structure and the Zc(4025) observed in the D*D[over ¯]* final state is within 1.5σ, but whether they are the same state needs further investigation. No significant Zc(3900) signal is observed, and upper limits on the Zc(3900) production cross sections in π±hc at center-of-mass energies of 4.23 and 4.26 GeV are set.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the potential correlation between polymorphisms of the estrogen receptor (ER)-β gene (RsaI and AluI) and ethnic Han Chinese human idiopathic thin endometrium. A total of 120 patients with idiopathic thin endometrium and 120 sterility patients with normal endometrium thickness (controls) were included in the study. RsaI and AluI polymorphisms of the ER-β gene were analyzed with polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism. The distribution of polymorphisms, genotype, allele, and haplotype was compared between the 2 groups. A significant difference in the RsaI genotype was observed between idiopathic thin endometrium patients and controls. The distribution of the R allele of the RsaI polymorphism in idiopathic thin endometrium patients was 37.1% compared with 48.3% in controls. The odds ratio was 0.630 (95% confidence interval = 0.438 to 0.907, P = 0.013). No significant difference in the genotype of the AluI polymorphism was found between the two groups. The linkage disequilibrium between RsaI and AluI haploids was not significant in either group, with D' values of 0.2036 and 0.0685 in the idiopathic thin endometrium patients and controls, respectively. The results of this study suggest a potential role of the ER-β gene polymorphisms in the etiology of idiopathic atrophic endometrium and the R allele as a potential protective factor in ethnic Han Chinese.

Abstract
Angiopoietin (Ang)-1 and Ang-2 interact in angiogenesis to activate the Tie-2 receptor, which may be involved in new vessel maturation and regression. Mast cells (MCs) are also involved in formation of new blood vessels and angiogenesis. The present study was designed to test whether MCs can mediate angiogenesis in myocardial microvascular endothelial cells (MMVECs). Using a rat MMVEC and MC co-culture system, we observed that Ang-1 protein levels were very low even though its mRNA levels were increased by MCs. Interestingly, MCs were able to enhance migration, proliferation, and capillary-like tube formation, which were associated with suppressed Ang-2 protein expression, but not Tie-2 expression levels. These MCs induced effects that could be reversed by either tryptase inhibitor [N-tosyl-L-lysine chloromethyl ketone (TLCK)] or chymase inhibitor (N-tosyl-L-phenylalanyl chloromethyl ketone), with TLCK showing greater effects. In conclusion, our data indicated that MCs can interrupt neovessel maturation via suppression of the Ang-2/Tie-2 signaling pathway.

Abstract
In typical laser-driven proton acceleration experiments Thomson parabola proton spectrometers are used to measure the proton spectra with very small acceptance angle in specific directions. Stacks composed of CR-39 nuclear track detectors, imaging plates, or radiochromic films are used to measure the angular distributions of the proton beams, respectively. In this paper, a new proton spectrometer, which can measure the spectra and angular distributions simultaneously, has been designed. Proton acceleration experiments performed on the Xtreme light III laser system demonstrates that the spectrometer can give angle-resolved spectra with a large acceptance angle. This will be conductive to revealing the acceleration mechanisms, optimization, and applications of laser-driven proton beams.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIM Fast-track surgery (FTS), combining several techniques with evidence-based adjustments, has shown its effectiveness to accelerate recovery, reduce morbidity and shorten hospital stay in many operations. This randomized controlled study was carried out aiming to compare the short-term outcomes of partial hepatectomy for liver cancer managed with FTS or with conventional surgery (CS). METHODS To compare the short-term effects between FTS and CS, a randomized controlled trial was carried out for liver cancer patients undergoing partial hepatectomy from September 2010 to June 2012. RESULTS Patients with liver cancers before receiving partial hepatectomy were randomized into the FTS group (n = 80) and the CS group (n = 80). Compared with the CS group, the FTS group had significantly less complications (P < 0.05), shorter durations of nausea/vomiting, paralytic ileus and hospital stay, higher general comfort questionnaire measures (GCQ) by Kolcaba Line (all P < 0.05), and lower serum levels of C-reactive protein on postoperative days 1, 3, and 5. CONCLUSIONS FTS was safe and efficacious. It lessened postoperative stress reactions and accelerated recovery for patients undergoing partial hepatectomy for liver cancer.

CpG ODN-induced matrix metalloproteinase-13 expression is mediated via activation of the ERK and NF-κB signalling pathways in odontoblast cells. Int Endod J 2013; 46:666-74. Abstract
AIM To investigate the effects of CpG ODN (CpG oligodeoxynucleotides) to model the action of bacterial challenge on pulpal matrix metalloproteinase-13 (MMP-13) expression and elucidate the associated intracellular signalling pathways. METHODOLOGY Real-time PCR was used to detect the effects of CpG ODN on MMP-13 mRNA expression levels in a murine odontoblast-lineage cell line (OLCs). The possible involvement of TLR9/MyD88, NF-κB or MAPK pathways involved in the CpG ODN-induced MMP-13 expression was examined by real-time PCR, transient transfection, luciferase activity assay and ELISA. Western blotting was performed to assay the phosphorylation of ERK at a range of time points. RESULTS MMP-13 was constitutively expressed in OLCs, and their exposure to CpG ODN significantly increased MMP-13 expression. Pre-treatment of OLCs with the inhibitory peptide MyD88, or chloroquine, attenuated the CpG ODN-induced expression of MMP-13. Treatment of the OLCs with CpG ODN increased NF-κB-luciferase activity. This activity was decreased by the over-expression of a nondegrading mutant of IκBα (IκBαSR), although enhanced by the over-expression of NF-κB p65. MMP-13 expression induced by CpG ODN was markedly suppressed by NF-κB inhibitors (pyrrolidine dithiocarbamate, PDTC), IκBα phosphorylation inhibitors (Bay 117082) or IκB protease inhibitor (L-1-tosylamido-2-phenylethyl chloromethyl ketone, TPCK). The inhibitor of ERK1/2, U0126, but not inhibitors of p38 MAPK and JNK, SB203580 and SP600125, decreased CpG ODN-mediated MMP-13 expression. CONCLUSION The CpG ODN-induced MMP-13 expression in OLCs is mediated through TLR9, NF-κB and the ERK pathway indicating that potentially the recognition of CpG ODN by TLR9 on odontoblasts may regulate the remodelling of injured dental pulp and hard tissues by inducing MMP-13 expression.

Abstract
The English grain aphid, Sitobion avenae (F.) (Homoptera: Aphididae), is a dominant and destructive pest in wheat, Triticum estivum L. (Poales: Poaceae), production regions in China and other grain-growing areas worldwide. Patterns of gene expression of the S. avenae-resistant synthetic wheat line 98-10-35, the S. avenae-susceptible line1376, and their hybrid population, and the differences in segments between 98-10-35/1376 F₃ resistant plants and resistant parents of 98-10-35, as well as those between the F3 resistant and susceptible populations, were examined with differential display reverse transcription PCR. The results showed that five patterns of differential expression were detected between the progeny and its resistant parents: 1) The gene was silenced in one of the parents; 2) Special expression showed in the progeny; 3) Expression was consistent with the resistant parents; 4) Up expression showed in the progeny but not in the parents; 5) Down expression showed in the progeny but not in the parents. Paired t-test results were not significant; however, the probability value (0.9158) indicated that gene expression on the RNA level were consistent with resistant bands found in F3 resistant individuals and resistant parents, as well as the F₃ resistant and susceptible populations. For both the F₃ of 98-10-35/1376 and the parents, the total number of amplified bands was 202, with an average of 25.3 per primer. The number of differential bands was 116, with an average of 14.5 per primer amplified and a polymorphism ratio of 56.3%. In the present study, differential expression genes in the resistant line 98-10-35 were all up-regulated. Among them, gene expression of resistant groups in the F₃ population was in agreement with patterns 2, 3, and 4. However, the susceptible line 1376 did not have this gene expression on the RNA level. This pattern is expected to be used to select and analyze target genes from the same F₃ population and the resistant parents. The results suggest that it can be employed as a new method for molecular assisted breeding.

Abstract
The time-delay effect on the bursting of the synchronized state of coupled Hindmarsh-Rose neurons is investigated in this paper. The time-delay influence on the structure of the slow manifold is first studied by using the method of stability switch. And then on the basis of the geometric singular perturbation theory, case studies are given to show that the time delay can suppress the bursting oscillation or lead to more complex dynamics. In particular, the mechanism of the transition from bursting oscillation to relaxation oscillation and to chaotic bursting is stated. Numerical results are given to demonstrate the validity of the analytical results.

Abstract
This is the first report on the determination of proteins with tetra-substituted sulphonated aluminum phthalocyanine (AlS(4)Pc) by resonance light-scattering (RLS). At pH 3.0, the weak RLS of AlS(4)Pc can be enhanced by the addition of proteins. Based on this, a novel quantitative method has been developed for the determination of proteins in aqueous solutions. Under optimal conditions, the linear ranges of the calibration curves were 0.050-2.0 mug ml(-1) for both human serum albumin (HSA) and human r-IgG. The detection limits were 12.7 ng ml(-1) for HSA and 16.1 ng ml(-1) for human r-IgG. The method has been applied to the analysis of total protein in human serum samples collected from the hospital and the results were in good agreement with those reported by the hospital, which indicates that the method presented here is not only sensitive, simple, but also reliable and suitable for practical applications.

Abstract
PURPOSE Conditional survival (CS) offers more relevant prognostic information for patients once they have survived for some time. The objective of this study was to determine the CS for advanced renal cell carcinoma (RCC) patients treated with vascular endothelial growth factor-targeted therapy. METHODS A total of 345 patients treated between 2006 and 2011 fulfilled the inclusion criteria and were reviewed for analyses. The 1-year conditional and actual survival rates were calculated for survivors from treatment to month 24. Subgroup-specific CS rates were generated after adjustment of the covariate influence. The Cox proportional hazard models were used to assess the prognostic factors at baseline and 1-year landmark. RESULTS The probabilities of surviving an additional year given survival to 6, 12, 18, and 24 months were 72.2, 76.3, 78.2, and 78.6 %, respectively. Remarkable increase in CS was observed in patients initially classified as intermediate or poor risk according to Heng risk groups. For patients survived 24 months after treatment, the adjusted CS for the following year was over 80 % regardless of initial risk attribution. Compared to baseline analysis, Heng risk groups were less predictive of survivorship after surviving 1 year. The addition of disease control status to multifactorial model significantly improved survival estimation for 1-year survivors (p < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS CS provides useful information regarding life expectancy for survivors of advanced RCC treated with targeted therapy. Furthermore, disease control status within a specific period of time is critical to the prediction of subsequent survival.

Abstract
We aimed to determine whether acute treatment with candesartan cilexetil (CV-11974), an angiotensin II type 1 receptor blocker (ARB) can improve insulin sensitivity in high-fructose-diet (HFD)-fed rats. In vivo glucose utilization was measured by applying the euglycemic clamp technique and the expression levels of insulin-signaling molecules in skeletal muscles were examined by western blotting. A bolus injection of CV-11974 improved the glucose infusion rate (GIR) of HFD-fed rats to the level of the control rats. Furthermore, restoration of impaired tyrosine phosphorylation of insulin receptor (IR) β, Akt phosphorylation at Ser⁴⁷³ and Thr³⁰⁸, and phosphorylation of the 160-kDa Akt substrate (AS160) in the skeletal muscles of HFD-fed rats were achieved by this treatment. These results suggest that acute administration of candesartan cilexetil can increase insulin sensitivity of HFD-fed rats, which is associated with improved insulin signaling in skeletal muscles.

Abstract
Ultrasound current source density imaging (UCSDI) potentially transforms conventional electrical mapping of excitable organs, such as the brain and heart. For this study, we demonstrate volume imaging of a time-varying current field by scanning a focused ultrasound beam and detecting the acoustoelectric (AE) interaction signal. A pair of electrodes produced an alternating current distribution in a special imaging chamber filled with a 0.9% NaCl solution. A pulsed 1 MHz ultrasound beam was scanned near the source and sink, while the AE signal was detected on remote recording electrodes, resulting in time-lapsed volume movies of the alternating current distribution.

Abstract
Understanding variation of plant nutrients is largely limited to nitrogen and to a lesser extent phosphorus. Here we analyse patterns of variation in 11 elements (nitrogen/phosphorus/potassium/calcium/magnesium/sulphur/silicon/iron/sodium/manganese/aluminium) in leaves of 1900 plant species across China. The concentrations of these elements show significant latitudinal and longitudinal trends, driven by significant influences of climate, soil and plant functional type. Precipitation explains more variation than temperature for all elements except phosphorus and aluminium, and the 11 elements differentiate in relation to climate, soil and functional type. Variability (assessed as the coefficient of variation) and environmental sensitivity (slope of responses to environmental gradients) are lowest for elements that are required in the highest concentrations, most abundant and most often limiting in nature (the Stability of Limiting Elements Hypothesis). Our findings can help initiate a more holistic approach to ecological plant nutrition and lay the groundwork for the eventual development of multiple element biogeochemical models.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this work was to construct one small interfering RNA (siRNA) eukaryotic expression vector targeting rat nuclear factor (NF)κB p65 and identify its inhibition effect on cell proliferation according to its down-regulation of NF-κB pathway. METHODS The p65siRNA expression vector "pGenesil-1.2-p65siRNA" and negative control plasmid "HK" were transfected into the cultured rat cells. After transfection, cells were divided into 4 treatment groups: 1) control cells cultured in complete. Dulbecco modified Eagle medium; 2) lipopolysaccharide (LPS) (1 μg/mL); (3) LPS (1 μg/mL) + HK-transfected; 4) LPS (1 μg/mL) + p65siRNA (pGenesil-1.2-p65siRNA). Thereafter, the protein levels of NF-κB p65 in the cells were detected by Western blotting at 72 hours after LPS stimulation. Furthermore, to observe cell proliferation, the proliferative rate of the cell growth was evaluated by the methylthiazolyl tetrazolium assay (at 24, 48, and 72 hours). The cell cycle distribution at 72 hours was detected by flow cytometry. RESULTS p65siRNA effectively down-regulated the protein level of p65 (P < .05). Meanwhile, the proliferation of cells transfected with p65siRNA expression vector was significantly inhibited (P < .05), the ratio of cells at G(0)/G(1) stage markedly increased, and the proportion of cells at S stage was significantly decreased among transfected compared with control cells (P < .05). CONCLUSIONS p65siRNA effectively suppressed NF-κB, expression, inhibiting rat cell proliferation induced by NF-κB signal pathway activation.

Abstract
An x-ray pinhole camera and a monochromatic K(α) imager are used to measure the interactions of intense femtosecond laser pulses with Cu foil targets. The two diagnostics give different features in the spot size and the laser energy scaling, which are resulted from different physical processes. Under our experimental conditions, the K(α) emission is mainly excited by the fast electrons transporting inside the cold bulk target. In contrast, the x-ray pinhole signals are dominated by the broadband thermal x-ray emission from the hot plasma at the front target surface.

Abstract
The effects of preplasma on lateral fast electron transport at front target surface, irradiated by ultraintense (>10(18) W/cm2) laser pulses, are investigated by Kα imaging technique. A large annular Kα halo with a diameter of ∼560 μm surrounding a central spot is observed. A specially designed steplike target is used to identify the possible mechanisms. It is believed that the halos are mainly generated by the lateral diffusion of fast electrons due to the electrostatic and magnetic fields in the preplasma. This is illustrated by simulated electron trajectories using a numerical model.

Abstract
The present study examined the effect of combination of short-term calorie restriction (CR) and moderate exercise on insulin action in normal rats. Rats were divided randomly into 4 groups: ad libitum, sedentary (A-Sed); calorie restriction, sedentary (CR-Sed); ad libitum, exercise (A-Ex); and calorie restriction, exercise (CR-Ex). Rats in the exercise groups were run on a rodent treadmill. Rats in the CR groups were fed every alternate day. Oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) showed improvements in both CR-Sed and A-Ex groups compared with the A-Sed group; no further improvement in glucose tolerance was observed in the CR-Ex group. In contrast, glucose infusion rates (GIRs) determined by the hyperinsulinemic-euglycemic clamp method indicated that the GIR of the CR and exercise combination was significantly better than that of the sole intervention of CR or exercise. There was no difference in the levels of fasting glucose, insulin, or high-molecular weight forms of adiponectin among the 4 groups. Protein expression of GLUT-4 in the skeletal muscle increased by exercise, but not by CR. Our findings indicate that the combination of exercise and CR may be effective in enhancing insulin sensitivity at the skeletal muscle in normal subjects.
