Abstract
A AgCl@AgI composite photocatalyst was greenly synthesized using Laminaria japonica extract as the source of halogen anions, and characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM and XPS techniques. The photocatalytic activity and photochemical stability of the AgCl@AgI were investigated by the photodegradation of methyl orange (MO) azo dye under visible light illumination (λ > 420 nm). The AgCl@AgI composite showed good photochemical stability and much higher photocatalytic activity than that of single AgCl and AgI. Mechanism studies showed that the main active species are photoinduced holes (h+) and superoxide anion radicals (·O2−). Finally, a plausible mechanism for the separation of photoinduced charge carriers was proposed. A AgCl@AgI nanocomposite was greenly synthesized with Laminaria japonica extract and applied as a visible-light-driven photocatalyst for organic pollutant degradation.![]()

Abstract
Structural, microstructural and bactericidal surface properties of TiO2 -coated glass substrates elaborated by reactive Radiofrequency sputtering are investigated. As pathogenic bacteria in biofilms are a major concern in food industries due to their growing resistance to cleaning and sanitizing procedures, the development of photoactive surfaces exhibiting bactericidal properties is acknowledged as an effective approach to tackle bacterial contaminations. Our principal aim concerns the study of the photoactive top-layer thickness impact (from 80 nm to ~500 nm) on Listeria monocytogenes. Structural characterization of the TiO2 layers demonstrates that anatase and rutile phases are both present, depending on the film thickness. Photocatalytic activity of the samples has been evaluated through the degradation of aqueous methylene blue (MB) solutions under UVA light illumination for various time periods. The results show an efficiency rating increase according to TiO2 film thickness up to a threshold value close to 400 nm. Moreover, a significant decrease of the adherent bacteria number is observed after 20 min of UVA illumination. The quantitative study of the bactericidal activity associated with scanning electron microscopy observations of the postprocess bacteria damaged cells demonstrates the efficiency of the 240-nm-thick TiO2 coating sample. The results are correlated with the production of hydroxyl radicals during the process of photocatalysis.

TiO₂ Modification with Transition Metallic Species (Cr, Co, Ni, and Cu) for Photocatalytic Abatement of Acetic Acid in Liquid Phase and Propene in Gas Phase. MATERIALS 2018; 12:ma12010040. Abstract
The commercial P25 titania has been modified with transition metallic species (Cr, Co, Ni, and Cu), added by impregnation with aqueous solutions of the corresponding nitrates. The preparation procedure also includes a heat treatment (500 °C) in argon to decompose the nitrates, remove impurities and to strengthen the metal–TiO2 interaction. The catalysts have been thoroughly characterized using N2 adsorption, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV-visible diffuse-reflectance spectroscopy (UV-vis DRS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and have been tested in the aqueous phase decomposition of acetic acid and in the gas phase oxidation of propene, using an irradiation source of 365 nm in both cases. The photocatalytic activity of the four metal-containing catalysts varies with the nature of the metallic species and follows a similar trend in the two tested reactions. The effect of the nature of the added metallic species is mainly based on the electrochemical properties of the supported species, being Cu/P25 (the sample that contains copper) the best performing catalyst. In the photodecomposition of acetic acid, all the metal-containing samples are more active than bare P25, while in the gas phase oxidation of propene, bare P25 is more active. This has been explained considering that the rate-determining steps are different in gas and liquid media.

Abstract
Colorimetric sensors, as a key branch of the application of photonic crystals (PCs), brings enthusiasm to scientists to do research. Here, simple mesoporous and structurally colored one-dimensional photonic crystals (1DPCs) constructed by alternating assembly of poly(acrylamide- N,N'-methylene bis(acrylamide)) (P(AM-MBA)) nanogels and TiO2 nanoparticles are reported as high-performance colorimetric humidity sensors. The sensors with bright colors display rapid response to relative humidity (RH) change and reach sensing balance in 0.5 s. By varying RH from 47.0% to 89.3%, stopband of a sensor changes from 426 to 668 nm, almost spanning the whole visible range. Meanwhile, visual sensing of RH possesses good reversibility and repeatability. Moreover, the sensors with delicate patterns are facilely fabricated by partial UV photodegradation of the polymer layers with nano TiO2 as catalyst. The delicate patterns and backgrounds show different colors and change color simultaneously and quickly by varying the ambient humidity. Accurate QR code pattern is also realized on the PC sensor; it is found successful reading of the data is only achieved by increasing RH to realize high color contrast between the code and background. Given their excellent properties, the porous hybrid PCs are promising as high-performance humidity sensors with potential display, decoration, information-storage, and encryption functions.

Abstract
Octahedral anatase particles (OAP, with eight equivalent {101} facets) and decahedral anatase particles (DAP, with two additional {001} facets) were modified with nanoparticles of noble metals (Au, Ag, Cu). The titania morphology, expressed by the presence of different arrangements of exposed crystal facets, played a key role in the photocatalytic properties of metal-modified faceted titania. In the UV/vis systems, two-faceted configuration of DAP was more favorable for the reaction efficiency than single-faceted OAP because of an efficient charge separation described by the transfer of electrons to {101} facets and holes to {001} facets. Time-resolved microwave conductivity (TRMC) and reversed double-beam photoacoustic spectroscopy (RDB-PAS) confirmed that distribution of electron traps (ET) and mobility of electrons were key-factors of photocatalytic activity. In contrast, metal-modified OAP samples had higher photocatalytic activity than metal-modified DAP and metal-modified commercial titania samples under visible light irradiation. This indicates that the presence of single type of facets ({101}) is favorable for efficient electron transfer via shallow ET, whereas intrinsic properties of DAP result in fast charge carriers' recombination when gold is deposited on {101} facets (migration of "hot" electrons: Au→{101}→Au).

Abstract
In this study, a green and facile thermal reduction of graphene oxide using an eco-friendly system of d-(+)-glucose and NH4OH for the preparation of reduced graphene oxide was described. The obtained reduced graphene oxide dispersion was characterized by SEM, Dynamic Light Scattering, Raman and X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy. TiO2 nanoparticles and reduced graphene oxide nanocomposites were successively prepared and used in the preparation of heterogeneous photocatalysts that were characterized by Atomic Force Microscopy and Photoluminescence Spectroscopy and subsequently tested as visible light photocatalysts for the photodegradation of Alizarin Red S in water as target pollutant. Obtained results of photocatalytic tests regarding the visible light photocatalytic degradation of Alizarin Red S demonstrated that the use of reduced graphene oxide in combination with TiO2 led to a significant improvement for both adsorption of Alizarin Red S on the catalyst surface and photodegradation efficiencies when compared to those obtained with not doped TiO2.

Abstract
This work aimed to optimize high-performance photocatalysts based on graphene oxide/titanium dioxide (GO/TiO2) nanocomposites for the effective degradation of aqueous pollutants. The catalytic activity was tested against the degradation of dichloroacetic acid (DCA), a by-product of disinfection processes that is present in many industrial wastewaters and effluents. GO/TiO2 photocatalysts were prepared using three different methods, hydrothermal, solvothermal, and mechanical, and varying the GO/TiO2 ratio in the range of 1 to 10%. Several techniques were applied to characterize the catalysts, and better coupling of GO and TiO2 was observed in the thermally synthesized composites. Although the results obtained for DCA degradation showed a coupled influence of the composite preparation method and its composition, promising results were obtained with the photocatalysts compared to the limited activity of conventional TiO2. In the best case, corresponding to the composite synthesized via hydrothermal method with 5% of GO/TiO2 weight ratio, an enhancement of 2.5 times of the photocatalytic degradation yield of DCA was obtained compared to bare TiO2, thus opening more efficient ways to promote the application of photocatalytic remediation technologies.

Abstract
This study outlines the optimization of photocatalytic degradation of toluene by W-doped TiO2 nanoparticles under visible light irradiation. Experiments were carried out based on the central composite design (CCD) methodology. W-TiO2 nanoparticles were synthesized with various tungsten contents at different calcination temperatures by the sol-gel method. The nanoparticles' characteristics were determined using appropriate techniques such as field emission scanning electron microscopy, particle size analysis, X-ray diffraction and energy-dispersive spectroscopy. The effect of different operational conditions of coating mass, initial toluene concentration, and exposure time on the toluene removal efficiency was investigated. Result showed that tungsten has a fundamental role in improving the photocatalytic activity of TiO2 under visible light, as well as improving its photoactivity under UV irradiation by decreasing the rate of electron/hole charge recombination. Analysis of the obtained data on toluene removal with a CCD approach illustrated that the quadratic model can effectively predict the toluene removal with coefficient of determination of R2 = 0.862. Tungsten content and exposure time affect the toluene removal efficiency more than other factors. Results showed that maximum toluene removal efficiency slightly depends on the initial concentration of toluene. At the initial toluene concentration of 4000 ppm, the optimum values of the calcination temperature, tungsten content, coating mass, and exposure time were 500°C, 0.52 wt%, 11.7 g/m2, and 8 h, respectively, with 59% removal of toluene.

Abstract
Surface modification of biomedical implants is an established strategy to improve tissue regeneration, osseointegration and also to minimize the bacterial accumulation. In the present study, electrospun poly(ε-caprolactone)/titania (PCL/TiO2) nanocomposite coatings were developed on commercially pure titanium (cpTi) substrates for an improved biological and antibacterial properties for bone tissue engineering. TiO2 nanoparticles in various amounts (2, 5, and 7 wt %) were incorporated into a biodegradable PCL matrix to form a homogeneous solution. Further, PCL/TiO2 coatings on cpTi were obtained by electrospinning of PCL/TiO2 solution onto the substrate. The resulted coatings were structurally characterized and inspected by employing scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Given the potential biological applications of PCL/TiO2 coated cpTi substrates, the apatite-forming capacity was examined by immersing in simulated body fluid (SBF) for upto 21 days. Biocompatibility has been evaluated through adhesion/proliferation of hFOB osteoblast cell lines and cytotoxicity by MTT assay. Antimicrobial activity of PCL/TiO2 nanocomposites has been tested using UV light against gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus (S.aureus). The resulting surface displays good bioactive properties against osteoblast cell lines with increased viability of 40% at day 3 and superior antibacterial property against S.aureus with a significant reduction of bacteria to almost 76%. Surface modification by PCL/TiO2 nanocomposites makes a viable approach for improving dual properties, i.e., biological and antibacterial properties on titanium implants which might be used to prevent implant-associated infections and promoting cell attachment of orthopedic devices at the same time.

Abstract
We report a new nanocomposite TiO2-poly(3-chloro-2-hydroxypropyl methacrylate) (TiO2-PCHPMA) for selective adsorption/degradation of cationic dyes and degradation of anionic dyes. TiO2-PCHPMA was prepared by free radical polymerization of CHPMA in the presence of TiO2 modified with 3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate. TiO2-PCHPMA adsorbed cationic methylene blue (MB), but did not adsorb anionic methyl orange (MO) in their aqueous solutions. The adsorption efficiency for MB reached 99% within 5 min at 28 °C, and adsorbed MB could be recycled in 96% efficiency. The adsorption accelerated degradation of MB under UV irradiation. The degradation of anionic MO proceeded completely with TiO2-PCHPMA under UV irradiation, and the efficiency was not affected by the PCHPMA layer. TiO2-PCHPMA is potentially applicable as a material capable of selective removal and recovery of cationic dyes, and degradation of other dyes from industrial effluents.

Abstract
Great efforts have been devoted to improve the photocatalytic activity of TiO2 in the visible light region. Rational design of the external structure and adjustment of intrinsic electronic status by impurity doping are two main effective ways to achieve this purpose. A facile one-pot synthetic approach was developed to prepare C-doped hollow TiO2 spheres, which simultaneously realized these advantages. The synthesized TiO2 exhibits a mesoporous hollow spherical structure composed of fine nanocrystals, leading to high specific surface area (~180m2/g) and versatile porous texture. Carbonate-doping was achieved by a post-thermal treatment at a relatively low temperature (200°C), which makes the absorption edge red-shifted to the visible region of the solar spectrum. Concomitantly, Ti3+ induced by C-doping also functions in improving the visible-light photocatalytic activity by reducing the band gap. There exists a synergistic effect from multiple stimulatives to enhance the photocatalytic effect of the prepared TiO2 catalyst. It is not out of expectation that the as-prepared C-doped hollow TiO2 spheres exhibits an improved photocatalytic activity under visible light irradiation in organic pollutant degradation.

Abstract
In this paper, it is first reported that gray hydrogenated TiO2 sphere photocatalysts (H-TiO2) with high reactivity to solar light are mass produced within a few minutes using an underwater discharge plasma modified sol-gel method at room temperature and atmospheric pressure. This plasma modified system is an easy one-step in-situ synthetic process and the crystallinity, hydrogenation, and spherical structure of H-TiO2 are achieved by the synergy effect between the continuous reaction of highly energetic atomic and molecular species generated from the underwater plasma and surface tension of water. The resultant H-TiO2 demonstrated high anatase/rutile bicrystallinity and extended optical absorption spectrum from the ultraviolet (UV) to visible range. Furthermore, various defects including oxygen vacancies and hydroxyl species on the TiO2 surface permitted the enhancement of the photocatalytic performance. It was demonstrated that H-TiO2 photocatalysts showed significant degradation efficiencies for reactive black 5 (RB 5), rhodamine B (Rho B), and phenol (Ph) under solar light irradiation, up to approximately 5 times higher than that of commercial anatase TiO2 (C-TiO2), which resulted in good water purification. Notably, it was also possible to cultivate HepG2 cells using such well-purified water (to degrees up to 76%), with minimal cytotoxicity. Considering all these results, we believe that this novel plasma technology is promising for important environmental applications.

Abstract
The demonstration of the structure-properties relationship of shape-dependent photocatalysts remains a challenge today. Herein, one-dimensional (1-D)-like titania (TiO2), as a model photocatalyst, has been synthesized under a strong magnetic field in the presence of a magnetically responsive liquid crystal as the structure-aligning agent to demonstrate the relationship between a well-aligned structure and its photocatalytic properties. The importance of the 1-D-like TiO2 and its relationship with the electronic structures that affect the electron-hole recombination and the photocatalytic activity need to be clarified. The synthesis of 1-D-like TiO2 with liquid crystal as the structure-aligning agent was carried out using the sol-gel method under a magnetic field (0.3 T). The mixture of liquid crystal, 4'-pentyl-4-biphenylcarbonitrile (5CB), tetra-n-butyl orthotitanate (TBOT), 2-propanol, and water, was subjected to slow hydrolysis under a magnetic field. The TiO2-5CB took a well-aligned whiskerlike shape when the reaction mixture was placed under the magnetic field, while irregularly shaped TiO2-5CB particles were formed when no magnetic field was applied. It shows that the strong interaction between 5CB and TBOT during the hydrolysis process under a magnetic field controls the shape of titania. The intensity of the emission peaks in the photoluminescence spectrum of 1-D-like TiO2-5CB was lowered compared with the TiO2-5CB synthesized without the magnetic field, suggesting the occurrence of electron transfer from 5CB to the 1-D-like TiO2-5CB during ultraviolet irradiation. Apart from that, direct current electrical conductivity and Hall effect studies showed that the 1-D-like TiO2 composite enhanced electron mobility. Thus, the recombination of electrons and holes was delayed due to the increase in electron mobility; hence, the photocatalytic activity of the 1-D-like TiO2 composite in the oxidation of styrene in the presence of aqueous hydrogen peroxide under UV irradiation was enhanced. This suggests that the 1-D-like shape of TiO2 composite plays an important role in its photocatalytic activity.

Abstract
Herein, highly efficient composite photocatalysts comprising black Cu-doped TiO2 nanoparticles (BCT) encapsulated within hierarchical flower-like NiAl-layered double hydroxide (LDH) microspheres were fabricated via a one-step hydrothermal route. Cu-doping and subsequent reduction treatment led to extended visible-light absorption of TiO2 in the resulting composites, as confirmed by ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance spectral analysis. Moreover, thorough investigations confirmed the strong interactions between LDH and BCT in the resulting BCT/LDH composites. Notably, the BCT/LDH composites exhibited remarkable performance in the degradation of hazardous materials (methyl orange and isoniazid), superior to that of the individual components, reference P25, and P25/LDH under visible-light irradiation. Moreover, the BCT/LDH composite containing 30 wt% of BCT displayed the highest photocatalytic performance among the synthesized photocatalysts and also exhibited high stability during recycling tests with no obvious change in the activity. The superior photodegradation activity of the BCT/LDH composites was primarily attributed to efficient transfer and separation of the photoinduced charge carriers, resulting from the intimate contact interfaces between LDH and BCT. This approach represents a promising route for the rational design of highly efficient and visible-light-active LDH-based composite photocatalysts for application in energy harvesting and environmental protection.

Abstract
Titanium dioxide (TiO2) is described as an established material to remove pollutants from water. However, TiO2 is still not applied on a large scale due to issues concerning, for example, the form of use or low photocatalytic activity. We present an easily upscalable method to synthesize high active TiO2 nanoparticles on a polyethersulfone microfiltration membrane to remove pollutants in a continuous way. For this purpose, titanium(IV) isopropoxide was mixed with water and hydrochloric acid and treated up to 210 °C. After cooling, the membrane was simply dip-coated into the TiO2 nanoparticle dispersion. Standard characterization was undertaken (i.e., X-ray powder diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, water permeance, contact angle). Degradation of carbamazepine and methylene blue was executed. By increasing synthesis temperature crystallinity and photocatalytic activity elevates. Both ultrasound modification of nanoparticles and membrane pre-modification with carboxyl groups led to fine distribution of nanoparticles. The ultrasound-treated nanoparticles gave the highest photocatalytic activity in degrading carbamazepine and showed no decrease in degradation after nine times of repetition. The TiO2 nanoparticles were strongly bound to the membrane. Photocatalytic TiO2 nanoparticles with high activity were synthesized. The innovative method enables a fast and easy nanoparticle production, which could enable the use in large-scale water cleaning.

Abstract
The development of sustainable yet efficient technologies to store solar light into high energy molecules, such as hydrocarbons and hydrogen, is a pivotal challenge in 21st century society. In the field of photocatalysis, a wide variety of chemical routes can be pursued to obtain solar fuels but the two most promising are carbon dioxide photoreduction and photoreforming of biomass-derived substrates. Despite their great potentialities, these technologies still need to be improved to represent a reliable alternative to traditional fuels, in terms of both catalyst design and photoreactor engineering. This review highlights the chemical fundamentals of different photocatalytic reactions for solar fuels production and provides a mechanistic insight on proposed reaction pathways. Also, possible cutting-edge strategies to obtain solar fuels are reported, focusing on how the chemical bases of the investigated reaction affect experimental choices.

Abstract
TiO₂-based photocatalysis under visible light is an attractive way to abate air pollutants. Moreover, developing photocatalytic materials on a large-scale requires safe and low-cost precursors. Both high-performance TiO₂ nanopowders and visible-light active noble metals do not match these requirements. Here, we report the design of novel Mn-decorated micrometric TiO₂ particles. Pigmentary TiO₂ replaced unsafe nano-TiO₂ and firmly supported MnOx particles. Mn replaced noble metals such as Au or Ag, opening the way for the development of lower cost catalysts. Varying Mn loading or pH during the impregnation affected the final activity, thus giving important information to optimize the synthesis. Photocatalytic activity screening occurred on the gas-phase degradation of ethanol as a reference molecule, both under ultraviolet (UV) (6 h) and Light Emitting Diode (LED) (24 h) irradiation. Mn-doped TiO₂ reached a maximum ethanol degradation of 35% under visible light after 24 h for the sample containing 20% of Mn. Also, we found that an acidic pH increased both ethanol degradation and mineralization to CO₂, while an alkaline pH drastically slowed down the reaction. A strict correlation between photocatalytic results and physico-chemical characterizations of the synthesized powders were drawn.

Abstract
During the last decade, hydrogels have been used as potential adsorbents for removal of contaminants from aqueous solution. To improve the adsorption efficiency, there are numerous different particles that can be chosen to encapsulate into hydrogels and each particle has their respective advantages. Depending on the type of pollutants and approaching method, the particles will be used to prepare hydrogels. The hydrogels commonly applied in water/wastewater treatment was mainly classified into three classes according to their shape included hydrogel beads, hydrogel films, and hydrogel nanocomposites. In review of many recently research papers, we take a closer look at hydrogels and their applications for removal of contaminants, such as heavy metal ion, dyes, and radionuclides from water/wastewater in order to elucidate the reactions between contaminants and particles and potential for recycling and regeneration of the post-treatment hydrogels.
