Abstract
To solve polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) pollution, composting was chosen as a remediation method. During composting, the dissipation of PAHs was carried out by resource utilization of organic solid waste and its degradation by bacteria. This study was conducted by co-composting with contaminated soil and cow manure. The results showed that the degradation rates of naphthalene (Nap), phenanthrene (Phe), and benzo[α]pyrene (BaP) could reach 82.2%, 79.4%, and 59.6% respectively during composting. Cluster analysis indicated that polyphenol oxidase (PPO), laccase, and protease were important drivers of PAHs transformation. The content of humic substances (HS) was 106.67 g/kg in PAH treatment, which was significantly higher than that in the control group at 65 days. The phylogenetic investigation of communities by reconstruction of unobserved states (PICRUSt) and network analysis was used to infer the degradation mechanism of PAHs by microorganisms. The degradation of PAHs by PPO was found to have a significant contribution to the formation of HS. It was shown that PAHs and metabolic intermediates were more inclined to be oxidized and decomposed by PPO to form quinone, which in turn condensed with amino acids to form HS. Composting could promote the degradation of PAHs while improving the quality of compost, achieving a win-win situation.

Abstract
Background and aims Intercropping, a widely used planting pattern, could affect soil physicochemical properties, microbial community diversity, and further crop yields. However, its impacts on soil microbial diversity and ecosystem functioning and further soil sustainability are poorly understood. Methods We conducted field experiments by intercropping maize with four important crops (i.e., sesame, peanut, soybean, and sweet potato), and examined soil microbial community diversity and ecosystem functioning such as microbial biomass and enzyme activities under monocropping and intercropping. We quantified their intercropping effects on microbial diversity and ecosystem functions with effect size metric Cohen d by comparing to the monocropping of maize. Results We found that the four intercropping systems significantly increased soil aggregates in respective of the 2-0.25 mm grain size. Intercropping consistently elevated ecosystem functioning, such as soil enzyme activities of urease, phosphatase, and catalase, soil microbial biomass carbon and soil microbial biomass nitrogen. The Cohen d of bacterial richness also increased from 0.39 to 2.36, the latter of which was significant for maize/peanut intercropping. Notably, these ecosystem functions were strongly associated with the diversity of bacteria and fungi and the relative abundance of their ecological clusters identified with network analysis. Conclusion Together, our findings indicate that intercropping generally affected soil physicochemical properties, ecosystem functions, and promoted microbial community diversity. More importantly, our findings highlight the important roles of microbial diversity of ecological clusters (that is, network modules) in maintaining ecosystem functioning after intercropping. These results will help to better understand the microbial diversity and ecosystem function in intercropping systems and guide agricultural practice.

Abstract
Biochar and nitrogen (N) fertilizer application can increase soil carbon sequestration and enhance soil nutrient cycling. However, few studies have systematically explored the effects of the long-term application of biochar and N fertilizer on soil multifunctionality and characterized its driving factors. Based on an 8-year biochar paddy-field experiment in anthropogenic alluvial alkaline soil in northwest China, we measured eleven soil functions associated with soil carbon sequestration and nutrient cycling and four potential factors (soil bacterial and fungal richness, pH, and aggregates) governing soil functions to investigate the effects of three biochar rates (C0, no biochar; C1, 4.5 t ha-1 year-1; C2, 13.5 t ha-1 year-1) and two N fertilizer rates (N0, no N fertilizer; N1, 300 kg N ha-1 year-1) on individual soil ecosystem functions and soil multifunctionality. Our results showed that biochar and N fertilizer application increased soil organic carbon (SOC) by 20-58 % and total N content by 9.3-15 % and had a varied effect (but mainly positive) on the activity of enzymes associated with soil carbon, N, and phosphorus cycling. Different application rates of biochar and N fertilizer had no influence on soil DNA concentrations, but did change soil microbial diversity, soil aggregation, and pH. The carbon storage function (SOC content) of soils is an important predictor of multifunctionality. Long-term biochar and N fertilizer application indirectly explained soil multifunctionality by altering soil pH, whereas bacterial and fungal diversity and soil aggregates did not play significant roles in explaining soil multifunctionality. These findings suggest that the application of biochar and N fertilizer can enhance soil multifunctionality by directly improving the individual functions [soil carbon sequestration (SOC content)] and decreasing soil pH in alkaline paddy fields.

Abstract
Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMFs) and biochar are two common alternatives to chemical fertilizers applied to soil to improve crop growth. However, their interactive effects on maize (Zea mays L.) growth, nutrient absorption, and physiological properties remain poorly understood. In this study, maize plants were grown in pots treated with biochar and AMFs Diversispora eburnea, alone or in combination. The results showed that the individual application of AMFs or biochar increased maize growth and mineral contents in shoots and roots (including P, K, Ca, Na, Mg, Fe, Mn, and Zn). The chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, and total chlorophyll contents in AMF-treated leaves were significantly higher than those in the control treatment group. However, AMFs had no synergistic effects with biochar on maize growth, nutrient absorption, nor photosynthetic pigments. The application of biochar to the soil significantly reduced mycorrhizal colonization by 40.58% in the root tissues, accompanied by a significant decline in mycorrhizal dependency from 80.57% to -28.67%. We conclude that the application of biochar and AMFs can affect maize growth, nutrient uptake, and physiological properties. Our study can provide vital information for further resource use optimization in agroecosystems.

Abstract
Pathogens can colonize plant endosphere and, be transferred into human beings through the food chain. However, our understanding of the influences of agricultural activities, such as fertilization, on endophytic microbial communities and human pathogens is still limited. Here, we conducted a microcosm experiment using the combination of 16 S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing and high-throughput qPCR array to reveal the effects of manure fertilization on microbiomes of soils and plants and how such impact is translated into endophytic pathogens. Our results showed that manure fertilization significantly altered soil microbiomes, whereas with less influence on endophytic microbial communities. Soil is a vital source of both bacterial communities and human pathogens for the plant endosphere. The abundance of pathogens was increased both in soils and endosphere under manure fertilization. These findings provide an integrated understanding of the impact of manure fertilization on endophytic pathogens.

Abstract
Electronic waste (e-waste) is increasing globally, but the impact of this source of combined pollution on soil biodiversity and multiple soil functions (i.e., ecosystem multifunctionality) remains unclear. Here, we evaluated the effects of combined pollution on the biodiversity and soil multifunctionality using samples collected from upland and paddy soils chronically contaminated with e-waste. Overall biodiversity, as well as the relative abundance and biodiversity of key ecological clusters, as combined pollution concentrations increased in upland soil, while the opposite was true in paddy soil. Soil multifunctionality followed the same trend. Organic pollutants had significant negative effects on soil multifunctionality and were the main influencing factors in upland soil. Heavy metals had significant positive effects on soil multifunctionality in paddy soil. Moreover, driving soil multifunctionality was overall biodiversity in upland soil but key biodiversity in paddy soil. Importantly, a strong positive association between key organism biodiversity and soil multifunctionality was found in soil with low contamination. However, the relationship between key organism biodiversity and soil multifunctionality weakened or disappeared in highly contaminated soil, whereas overall biodiversity was significantly and positively correlated with multifunctionality. Our results emphasized that severe e-waste contamination would reduce soil biodiversity and soil multifunctionality and warrants high attention.

Abstract
Soil microbial communities play a key role in the biochemical processes and nutrient cycles of the soil ecosystem and their byproducts, including greenhouse gases (GHGs). Organic fertilization influences bacterial soil biodiversity and is an essential emission source of GHGs in paddy soil ecosystems. However, the impact of organic fertilization on the functional microorganisms associated with the GHGs methane and nitrous oxide remains unknown. We conducted paddy soil field experiments under three different treatments (no fertilization, base fertilization, and organic fertilization) to investigate the contribution of organic fertilization to soil nutrients and the functional microorganisms associated with GHG emissions. We found that organic fertilization effectively increased the soil organic matter (P < 0.001), soil organic carbon (P < 0.001), and total nitrogen (P < 0.05) as well as the richness (operational taxonomic units and abundance-based coverage estimators) of the methanogenic communities. Correlation analyses showed that methanogenic communities that were present in abundance were more vulnerable to perturbations in soil properties compared to nitrifying bacterial communities. Partial least squares path model analyses elucidated that organic fertilization directly affected both methanogenic communities and nitrifying bacterial communities (P < 0.05), thereby accelerating methane emissions. Strong co-occurrence networks were observed within the soil-dominant phyla Acidobacteria, Bacteroidetes, and Proteobacteria. Our findings highlight the impact of organic fertilization on soil nutrients and functional microorganisms and guide mitigating GHG emissions from paddy soil agroecosystems.

Abstract
The potential patterns and processes of ecosystem multifunctionality (EMF) across global ecosystems are largely unknown, which limits our understanding of how ecosystems respond to drivers. Here we compile a global dataset that consists of 973 unique sites across the forest, grassland, and shrub ecosystems. We identify a critical global pattern of hump-shaped EMF relationship with mean annual precipitation at a threshold of ∼671 mm, where low and high precipitation patterns are discriminated. We find that climatic and soil factors jointly drive the EMF in low precipitation areas, and climatic factors dominate the EMF in high precipitation regions. However, when comparing across the three dominant ecosystems and precipitation regions, the key driver in EMF differs substantially. Specifically, climatic and soil factors dominate the EMF of low and high precipitation regions across forest ecosystems, respectively. Climatic drivers dominate the EMF under different precipitation conditions across grassland and shrub ecosystems. Overall, our findings highlight the importance of climatic and soil drivers on EMF, which should be considered in ecosystem stability models in response to global climate and land-use change scenarios.

Abstract
The plant microbiome is shaped by plant development and microbial interaction. Fungal pathogens infecting bell pepper plants may fluctuate across the growing seasons. Dynamic fluctuation of the microbiome and fungal pathogens in bell pepper plants is poorly understood, and the origin of fungal pathogens causing fruit rot and leaf wilt has been barely investigated. In this study, we used amplicon sequencing (i.e., 16S rRNA and internal transcribed spacer [ITS] sequencing) to explore the compositional variations of the microbiome in bell pepper plants and studied the fluctuation of fungal pathogens across the growing seasons. Co-occurrence network analysis was applied to track the origin and dissemination route of fungal pathogens that infected bell pepper plants. ITS and 16S rRNA sequencing analyses demonstrated that fungal pathogens infecting fruits and leaves probably belonged to the Penicillium, Cladosporium, Fusarium, and unclassified_Sclerotiniaceae genera rather than one specific genus. The dominant fungal pathogens were different, along with the development of bell pepper plants. Both plant development and fungal pathogens shaped microbial communities in bell pepper plants across the growing seasons. Fungal pathogens decreased species richness and diversity of fungal communities in fungus-infected fruit and leaf tissues but not the uninfected stem tissues. Bacterial metabolic functions of xenobiotics increased in fungus-infected leaves at a mature developmental stage. Competitive interaction was present between fungal and bacterial communities in leaves. Co-occurrence network analysis revealed that the origins of fungal pathogens included the greenhouse, packing house, and storage room. Niche differentiation of microbes was discovered among these locations. IMPORTANCE Bell peppers are widely consumed worldwide. Fungal pathogen infections of bell peppers lead to enormous economic loss. To control fungal pathogens and increase economic benefit, it is essential to investigate the shifting patterns of the microbiome and fungal pathogens in bell pepper plants across the growing seasons. In this study, bell pepper plant diseases observed in fruits and leaves were caused by different fungal pathogens. Fungal pathogens originated from the greenhouse, packing house, and storage room, and niche differentiation existed among microbes. This study improves the understanding of dynamic fluctuation and source of fungal pathogens infecting bell pepper plants in the farming system. It also facilitates precise management of fungal pathogens in the greenhouse.
