Abstract
CONTEXT Evidence suggests that exposure to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) increases the risk of developing cardiometabolic disease risk factors. Limited research has evaluated associations between PFAS, assessed during pregnancy, a sensitive window for maternal endocrine effects, and long-term maternal adiposity. OBJECTIVE Estimate associations of early pregnancy measures of individual PFAS, and PFAS mixtures, with maternal adiposity in midlife. METHODS We studied 547 Project Viva participants with measures of early pregnancy (mean gestation 10.0 weeks; mean age 32.5 years) plasma concentrations of 6 PFAS and midlife adiposity outcomes (mean follow-up 17.7 years; mean age 50.7 years), including weight, waist circumference (WC), trunk fat mass (TFM), and total body fat mass (TBFM). We used linear regression and Bayesian Kernel Machine Regression (BKMR). RESULTS Linear regression estimated higher midlife weight per doubling of perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) (3.8 kg [95% CI: 1.6, 5.9]) and 2-(N-ethyl-perfluorooctane sulfonamido) acetate (2.3 kg [95% CI: 0.9, 3.7]). BKMR analyses of single PFAS plasma concentrations (comparing the 25th percentile concentration to the 75th percentile) showed a positive association between PFOS and midlife adiposity (weight: 7.7 kg [95% CI: 4.0, 11.5]; TFM: 1.2 kg [95% CI: 0.0, 2.3]; TBFM: 3.0 kg [95% CI: 0.8, 5.2]), but inverse associations with perfluorononanoate (weight: -6.0 kg [95% CI: -8.5, -3.5]; WC: -1.8 cm [95% CI: -3.2, -0.3]; TFM: -0.8 kg [95% CI: -1.5, -0.1]; TBFM: -1.4 kg [95% CI: -2.7, -0.3]) and perfluorohexane sulfonate (TFM: -0.8 kg [95% CI: -1.5, -0.1]; TBFM: -1.4 kg [95% CI: -2.6, -0.2]). No associations were observed with the overall PFAS mixture. CONCLUSION Select PFAS, assessed in pregnancy, may differentially affect maternal midlife adiposity, influencing later-life maternal cardiometabolic health.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Overactive bladder (OAB) is a common condition in middle-aged and older women. It has been reported to be potentially linked to cognitive decline, particularly in older adults. This study investigated the association between OAB symptoms and cognitive impairment in middle-aged women. MATERIALS AND METHODS This cross-sectional study had a sample of 1652 women (mean age 49.3 ± 2.8 years) who were not taking medication for either urinary tract infection or OAB. OAB symptoms and cognitive function were evaluated by self-administered questionnaires: the Overactive Bladder Symptom Score and the Alzheimer's disease 8. Logistic regression models estimated prevalence ratios (PRs) with 95 % confidence intervals (CI) for cognitive impairment according to the presence/absence of OAB. Mediation analyses assessed the impact of poor sleep quality on this association. RESULTS Cognitive impairment was more prevalent in women with OAB than in those without OAB (multivariable-adjusted PR: 1.88 [95 % CI: 1.52-2.24]). Women experiencing nocturia (≥twice a night), urinary urgency at least once a week, and urgency urinary incontinence at least once a week had multivariable-adjusted PRs (95 % CI) for cognitive impairment of 2.08 (1.50-2.65), 2.12 (1.66-2.58), and 1.75 (1.17-2.34), respectively. Poor sleep quality mediated 10.81 % [95 % CI: 4.55-19.44 %] of the relationship between OAB and cognitive impairment. CONCLUSIONS Among middle-aged women not taking OAB medications, OAB symptoms were associated with cognitive impairment, partly because of poor sleep quality. Further research is needed to determine whether early screening of patients with OAB can help identify those susceptible to cognitive impairment associated with OAB medication and if preventive measures should be targeted at this group.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to characterize African American women's experiences of menopause and their interactions with the health care system related to menopausal symptoms. STUDY DESIGN We conducted four focus groups with community-dwelling midlife African American women. MAIN OUTCOMES MEASURES Women who consented to participate completed demographic surveys. Transcripts of the four focus groups (n = 26) were analyzed and themes were elucidated. RESULTS In total, 26 midlife African American women participated in the four focus groups. Participants revealed unmet needs regarding obtaining menopause information from their clinicians. Clinician discussions about menopause tended to be initiated by patients based on their symptoms. Some women reported feeling ignored and/or dismissed by the clinician when they initiated discussions of menopause. Women wanted their clinicians to provide information on menopause, which included receiving information prior to the menopause transition to help them know what to expect. CONCLUSION Women wanted their clinicians to initiate discussions of menopause rather than wait for women to mention symptoms. Prioritizing menopause training for clinicians taking care of midlife African American women may help to improve discussions of menopause.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Since the legalization of recreational cannabis in 2018, the use of cannabis for medical reasons has increased in Canada. The aim of this study was to explore the experiences and perceptions of midlife women using cannabis for medical purposes coinciding with menopause symptom management. METHODS Semistructured, one-on-one interviews were conducted using a qualitative description method. This was the second phase of a mixed methods study, where interviewees were purposefully selected from a sample of women (ages 35 and over, located in Alberta) surveyed during the first phase of the study. Interviews were by phone or virtual meeting, audio-recorded, and transcribed verbatim. Qualitative content analysis was applied to analyze the data collected. RESULTS Twelve interviews were conducted between December 2020 and April 2021. Menopause was perceived as a complex experience for women. Cannabis was described as a therapeutic agent, providing symptom relief through the menopause transition. Women reported similarities in their menopause and cannabis use experiences in the lack of information available, limited role of healthcare providers, feelings of stigmatization, and emphasis on self-education. Women self-managed their cannabis use, learning from their own experiences or the anecdotal sharing of others', accessed cannabis from a variety of medical and nonmedical sources, and relied on experimentation, and a range of supports were described. CONCLUSION Midlife women pursued the use of cannabis medically to manage symptoms that overlap with menopause. Understanding how and why midlife women use cannabis medically can provide insight for future research and the development of educational resources to support women in menopause.

Abstract
PURPOSE To analyze the effect of two 16-week interventions with jazz dance and concurrent training compared to a control group on anxiety, depression, stress, mood, and the perspective of aging in menopausal women, after 1-month, post-intervention, and at the 6-month follow-up. METHODS 70 post-menopausal women (53.19 ± 3.39 years) randomized into 3 groups:intervention group with Jazz Dance (JD); intervention group with Concurrent Training (CT), and Control Group (CG). Both interventions lasted 16 weeks, with 60-min classes, JD with a frequency of two weekly classes, and CT three times a week. The intensity of the JD was progressive and according to the frequency of beats per minute of the songs. In CT, the aerobic an initial intensity of 60% of HRmax, reaching 90%, and resistance the volume of sets and loads increased progressively throughout the intervention. Questionnaires related to symptoms of anxiety and depression (Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale); stress (Perceived Stress Scale); mood (Brunel Mood Scale); and aging perspective (Sheppard Inventory) were applied. Intention-to-treat (ITT) and protocol adherence analysis were performed. RESULTS In the protocol analysis, the JD showed improvements in anxiety and depressive symptoms after 1-month, which remained at the follow-up. The TC presented reduced anxiety and depressive symptoms after 16 weeks, which also remained at the follow-up. Considering stress, the CT showed improvements at all times and the JD post-intervention. As for mood, the CT presented reduced anger, mental confusion, and fatigue only after 1-month, and both exercise groups presented increased vigor at all times. CONCLUSION Both interventions were beneficial, however dance showed immediate results for anxiety and depression, and concurrent training for stress. Considering mood, concurrent training was more effective for anger, mental confusion, and fatigue, while both interventions were effective for vigor. Abstract
The pharmacological effects of pomegranates have been described considering metabolic aspects such as hypoglycemic and hypolipidemic activities. The pomegranate extract has activity on the central nervous system (CNS) as a natural antidepressant and anxiolytic. The chemical composition of pomegranates is complex since the bioactive compounds are multiple secondary metabolites that have been identified in the extracts derived from the peel, seed, flowers, leaves, or in their combination; so, it has not been easy to identify an individual compound as responsible for its observed pharmacological properties. From this point of view, the present review analyzes the effects of crude extracts or fractions of pomegranates and their possible mechanisms of action concerning antidepressant- and anxiolytic-like effects in animal models. Serotonin receptors, estrogen receptors, the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARγ), or monoamine oxidase enzymes, as well as potent antioxidant and neuroplasticity properties, have been described as possible mediators involved in the antidepressant- and anxiolytic-like behaviors after pomegranate treatment. The pharmacological effects observed on the CNS in experimental models associated with a specific stress level suggest that pomegranates could simultaneously modulate the stress response by activating several targets. For the present review, scientific evidence was gathered to integrate it and suggest a possible pathway for mediators to be involved in the mechanisms of action of the pomegranate's antidepressant- and anxiolytic-like effects. Furthermore, the potential benefits are discussed on comorbid conditions with anxiety and depression, such as perimenopause transition and pain.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Menopause is a physiological period characterized by the cessation of ovarian activity. Sequential changes during this transition affect multiple systems, including the brain. Sixty percent of women experience cognitive impairment. The objective of this review is to show the neuroprotective effect of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) through the different scales and whether there is a benefit of this in women. METHOD A search was conducted in six databases. Eligibility criteria included women within 10 years of menopause, receiving HRT controlled with placebo, studies lasting more than 6 months and women without a history of chronic underlying pathology. RESULTS A total of nine randomized controlled trials met the inclusion criteria. Regarding memory, two studies reported better performance of HRT with a significant odds ratio (OR) of 0.67; regarding attention, one study reported potential improvement in women receiving HRT with a significant OR of 0.87; and neuroimaging assessment found an increase in ventricular volume compared to placebo over a 3-year period. CONCLUSIONS The early initiation of menopausal HRT in healthy women appears to yield a positive effect on certain cognitive aspects, such as attention and cortical volume in the central nervous system. These findings should be confirmed through future prospective studies.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to document the prevalence and severity of vasomotor symptoms (VMS) and sexual symptoms among refugee women in Melbourne, Australia. METHODS This cross-sectional study included refugee women, aged 18-63 years, recruited from community centers and social media between February and July 2023. The Menopause-specific Quality of Life (MENQOL) questionnaire measured VMS and sexual symptoms. The scores were compared between different menopausal states. RESULTS Of 333 participants, 62.8% were premenopausal, 8.0% perimenopausal and 29.2% postmenopausal, with a median age of 40 years (range 18-63 years). Moderate-severe VMS was most prevalent amongst perimenopausal (20.8%; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 8.9-41.4%) versus postmenopausal (9.5%; 95% CI: 5.0-17.3%) and premenopausal (0%) women. Moderate-severe sexual symptoms affected 15.8% (95% CI: 5.2-39.3%) of perimenopausal and 16.9% (95% CI: 10.4-26.1%) of postmenopausal women versus 1.4% (95% CI: 0.3-5.3%) of premenopausal women. Perimenopausal and postmenopausal women had higher VMS and sexual symptom scores than premenopausal women (both p < 0.0001); the scores were also higher in perimenopausal women than postmenopausal women (p = 0.016 and p = 0.013, respectively). CONCLUSION While perimenopausal and postmenopausal VMS and sexual symptoms are not uncommon amongst refugee women, these symptoms were less prevalent in postmenopausal refugees than in the non-refugee population. Further research is warranted to confirm and expand on these findings.

Abstract
AIMS To identify peri- and post-menopausal women at risk of non-communicable diseases in rural India and to assess their prevalence amongst these groups via the use of artificial intelligence. SETTINGS AND DESIGN An observational study conducted by the Indian Menopause Society in collaboration with the Government of Maharashtra. The study included rural women residents of three villages in the Latur district of Maharashtra, India. MATERIALS AND METHODS Accredited social health activist workers identified 400 peri- and post-menopausal women aged 45-60 years. Specific symptoms able to predict the presence of a non-communicable disease were identified through the use of artificial intelligence. STATISTICAL ANALYSIS USED Descriptive statistics and predictive network charts analysis. RESULTS The mean age of 316 women included in the analysis was 50.4 years and the majority of them were illiterate (68 %). The prevalence of dyslipidaemia, osteopenia, diabetes mellitus, obesity and hypertension were 58 %, 50 %, 25 %, 25 %, and 20 % respectively. None of their symptoms or laboratory reports could be significantly correlated directly with any of these non-communicable diseases. Hence, we used a cluster of symptoms to suggest the presence of hypertension, diabetes mellitus, osteoporosis and hypothyroidism via predictive network analysis charts. CONCLUSIONS Screening of at-risk women can be done using an artificial intelligence-based screening tool for early diagnosis, timely referral and treatment of non-communicable diseases with the support of community health workers.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to assess the possible association of adherence to the Mediterranean diet (MD) with muscle strength and body composition. METHODS The cross-sectional study evaluated 112 postmenopausal women (aged 41-71 years). Fasting blood samples were obtained for biochemical/hormonal assessment. The Mediterranean Dietary Score (MedDietScore) was calculated and used to stratify adherence by tertiles (low [T1], moderate [T2] or high [T3]). Handgrip strength (HGS) was measured by dynamometry and body composition with dual-X-ray absorptiometry. RESULTS Women with low-moderate MedDietScore (T1/T2) had lower HGS values than those with higher scores (19.5 ± 4.9 kg vs. 21.9 ± 3.9 kg, p = 0.023). A linear stepwise increase of HGS values per MedDietScore tertile was found (T1 vs. T2 vs. T3: 18.4 ± 4.4 kg vs. 20.6 ± 5.2 kg vs. 21.9 ± 3.9 kg, ANOVA p-value for linear trend = 0.009, ANCOVA p-value = 0.026). Multivariable models confirmed that HGS values were independently associated with the MedDietScore (β-coefficient = 0.266, p = 0.010). Lean mass values were associated with the MedDietScore (β-coefficient = 0.205, p = 0.040). All models were adjusted for age and cardiometabolic risk factors. CONCLUSIONS The data suggest that the higher the adherence to the MD, the better the muscle strength and lean mass in postmenopausal women. Prospective studies are required to evaluate the significance of these observations in cardiovascular prevention strategies at midlife.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Women can spend up to 40% of their lives in the postmenopausal state. As women begin to transition into menopause, known as perimenopause, changes in hormonal concentrations and body composition dramatically increase overall cardiometabolic risk. Dietary patterns and interventions can be utilized to prevent and treat cardiovascular disease (CVD) and some dietary patterns over others may be more beneficial due to their specific effects on the health aspects of menopause. In this narrative review, we summarize key cardiovascular alterations that occur during the menopause transition and explore current dietary recommendations to address CVD risk as well as explore the new frontier of precision nutrition and the implications for nutrition prescription during menopause. SUMMARY Popular dietary interventions for CVD such as the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet and the Mediterranean diet (MED) have limited data in women following menopause. However, both diets improve CVD risk biomarkers of total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol as well as lower oxidative stress and inflammation and improve endothelial function. As the menopause transition increases the risk for developing metabolic syndrome, insulin insensitivity, and dyslipidemia, the DASH diet and MED may be impactful dietary strategies for mediating CVD risk in menopausal women. However, these are "one-size-fits-all" approaches that neglect individual characteristics such as genetic predisposition and environmental factors. Precision nutrition considers individual factors for nutrition prescription, spanning from evaluating food intake preferences and behaviors to deep phenotyping. Data from a large-scale investigation of the menopause transition suggests nutritional strategies that address postprandial glycemic responses, and the gut microbiome may attenuate some of the unfavorable effects of menopause on CVD risk factors. KEY MESSAGES Considering menopause, women are a clinical population that would greatly benefit from precision nutrition. Future research should explore the use of machine learning and artificial intelligence in a precision nutrition framework to modify the DASH diet and MED to address adverse effects that occur during the menopause transition are vital for supporting women's health as they age.

Abstract
Adopting healthy behaviors is a multifaceted and complex process that poses significant challenges for individuals. Despite awareness of the detrimental effects of certain behaviors on health, many individuals continue to engage in risky practices. Traditional medical advice and prescriptions, while well intentioned, often fall short in fostering lasting lifestyle changes. Although individuals may also have good intentions, solely relying on doctor's counsel does not ensure successful lifestyle adjustments. One primary reason for this limitation is the lack of specialized expertise in behavioral modification among gynecologists and healthcare providers. Health psychologists are specialized professionals capable of effectively guiding and assisting individuals in modifying health-related behaviors. Their expertise in behavior change strategies and psychological interventions proves invaluable in empowering individuals to embrace healthier lifestyles and contributes to people's well-being. This paper emphasizes the importance of collaborative efforts between medical professionals, such as gynecologists, and health psychologists to promote healthy behaviors among peri- and postmenopausal women and enhance women's health. By forging integrative alliances, they can develop comprehensive and tailored interventions. By bridging the gap between medical advice and behavior modification, this collaborative effort has the potential to ensure a more effective intervention process. This holistic approach not only addresses women's specific health needs but also fosters sustainable behavior change when promoting healthy behaviors among middle-aged women. The ultimate goal of such a synergy is to improve women's health outcomes and contribute to a healthier society overall.

Abstract
BDNF is a protein associated with cognitive dysfunction. The aim of the study was to determine the relationship between BDNF and cognitive functions and the intake of macronutrients in postmenopausal women. For this purpose, 72 postmenopausal women were recruited to the study and divided into two subgroups: overweight/obese and normal weight. Using a 3-day food record, nutrition was assessed. The markers studied were the level of BDNF, which was determined from the venous blood serum collected from women, and selected cognitive functions. We observed that in the normal BMI group macronutrient intake was correlated with BDNF levels, and only total fat and carbohydrate intake were inversely correlated with BDNF levels. There were inverse correlations observed among selected parameters of cognitive functioning. In the Ov/Ob group, macronutrient intake correlated with the BDNF level for several variables, e.g. vice versa with total protein, fat and carbohydrate intake, as well as dietary cholesterol. It has also been noted that there are links between the BDNF factor and excessive body weight.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study's aim is to examine patterns of menopause symptoms and attitudes among United States women from different religious affiliations. STUDY DESIGN We used data from a national sample of midlife and older adults. For this analysis, we included only women who were postmenopausal or had undergone hysterectomy. We constructed univariate and multivariate logistic regression models to examine the relationship between religious affiliation and menopause symptoms and attitudes while adjusting for potential confounders. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Menopause symptoms (hot flashes, pain in sexual interactions, pleasure in sexual interactions, trouble falling asleep) and attitudes (relief on periods stopping, regret on periods stopping, worry about becoming less attractive) measured by self-report on Likert scales. RESULTS Across denominations, 47 % of women experienced hot flashes, 48 % experienced pain in sexual interactions, 95 % experienced pleasure, and 88 % had trouble falling asleep. Regarding attitudes towards menopause and aging, 62 % felt relief in their periods stopping, while 56 % expressed worry about becoming less attractive with aging. Baptist women were more likely to experience hot flashes and trouble falling asleep compared to Catholic women. However, when adjusted for smoking status, this relationship did not persist. Unaffiliated and Spiritual women were less likely to experience trouble falling asleep and more likely to report pleasure in sexual interactions compared to Catholic women. Spiritual women were significantly more likely to feel regret on periods stopping compared to Catholics. CONCLUSIONS There is a relationship between religious affiliation and the menopause experience. These findings demonstrate the importance of considering social influences on women's health.

Abstract
The menopausal transition (MT) is associated with an increased risk for many disorders including neurological and mental disorders. Brain imaging studies in living humans show changes in brain metabolism and structure that may contribute to the MT-associated brain disease risk. Although deficits in ovarian hormones have been implicated, cellular and molecular studies of the brain undergoing MT are currently lacking, mostly due to a difficulty in studying MT in postmortem human brain. To enable this research, we explored 39 candidate biomarkers for menopausal status in 42 pre-, peri-, and post-menopausal subjects across three postmortem tissues: blood, the hypothalamus, and pituitary gland. We identified thirteen significant and seven strongest menopausal biomarkers across the three tissues. Using these biomarkers, we generated multi-tissue and tissue-specific composite measures that allow the postmortem identification of the menopausal status across different age ranges, including the "perimenopausal", 45-55-year-old group. Our findings enable the study of cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying increased neuropsychiatric risk during the MT, opening the path for hormone status-informed, precision medicine approach in women's mental health.

Menopause experiences and care vary widely because of biological, sociodemographic, and sociocultural factors. Treatments for troublesome symptoms are not uniformly available or accessed. Intersectional factors may affect the experience and are poorly understood. Disparities across populations highlight the opportunity for a multifaceted equitable approach that includes patient-centered care, education, and policy change.

Abstract
Hormonal changes during the menopause transition may lead to vasomotor symptoms, including hot flashes (HFs) and neuropsychiatric symptoms such as anxiety and irritability. We hypothesized that the effects of cassis polyphenol (CaP) to improve microcirculation and vasorelaxation may alleviate menopausal symptoms. We performed a randomized, double-blind, parallel-group, placebo-controlled trial involving 59 healthy women (mean [standard deviation] age, 51.3 [4.3] years; body mass index, 20.8 [2.6] kg/m2). Participants experiencing subjective menopausal symptoms consumed CaP tablets (400 mg/d, CaP group) or placebo tablets (placebo group) for 4 weeks. Participants were evaluated using questionnaires at baseline, during the 4-week intervention period, and during a 2-week postinterventional observation period. The primary objective was to evaluate the effects of supplementation with CaP on HFs in healthy Japanese women with menopausal symptoms. Additional assessments included the modified Kupperman menopausal index, World Health Organization-5 Well-Being Index, World Health Organization quality-of-life 26-item index, State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (anxiety and trait components), and Oguri-Shirakawa-Azumi sleep inventory (middle-aged and elderly versions). During the 4-week intervention period, no significant between-group differences were detected in the HF frequency, HF score, sweating frequency, menopausal symptoms, quality of life, anxiety, or sleep. During the 2-week postintervention observational period, the HF score and sweating frequency were significantly decreased in the CaP group compared with the placebo group. These findings suggest that twice daily intake of CaP for 4 weeks does not alleviate menopause symptoms, but the improvement observed in the CaP intake group during the postintervention period warrants confirmation through further large-scale studies.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aims of the study were to further characterize the efficacy of fezolinetant for the treatment of moderate-to-severe vasomotor symptoms (VMS) due to menopause using responder analysis and to investigate whether efficacy, not adjusted for placebo, resulted in clinically meaningful within-patient change. METHODS This prespecified analysis used pooled data from two phase 3, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled studies (SKYLIGHT 1 and 2). Responders were those experiencing ≥50%, ≥75%, ≥90%, or 100% reduction in VMS frequency from baseline to weeks 4 and 12. Responder analysis was performed for patient-reported outcome (PRO) measures to evaluate participants achieving a clinically meaningful within-patient change (not placebo adjusted) at week 4 and 12 versus baseline. Single responders were based on outcomes of VMS frequency, Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System Sleep Disturbance-Short Form 8b Total Score, Menopause-Specific Quality of Life (MENQoL) Total Score, and MENQoL VMS Domain Score. Double and triple responder analyses combined VMS frequency plus one or more of the PRO. Patient Global Impression of Change VMS was deemed a suitable anchor measure for meaningful within-patient change in VMS frequency. RESULTS A greater proportion of fezolinetant-treated versus placebo-treated participants had ≥50%, ≥75%, ≥90%, or 100% reduction in VMS frequency from baseline to weeks 4 and 12. A greater proportion of responders were observed in the fezolinetant groups versus placebo at week 12 in all four single responder analyses. In the double and triple responder analyses, odds ratios were supportive of a beneficial effect for both doses of fezolinetant versus placebo. CONCLUSIONS Fezolinetant was associated with significantly higher within-patient clinically meaningful improvement in important PRO, including VMS frequency, PROMIS SD SF 8b Total Score, MENQoL Total Score, and MENQoL VMS Domain Score.

Abstract
Menopause is associated with declines in cognitive control. However, there is individual variability in the slope of this decline. Recent work suggests that indices of cognitive control are mediated by communicative demands of the language environment. However, little is known about how the impact of bilingual experience generalizes across the lifespan, particularly in females who exhibit steeper cognitive decline due to increasing age and menopausal transition. Thus, we investigated whether diversity of language use in distinct communicative contexts modulated the effects of aging and menopause on cognitive control in an adult lifespan sample of healthy females. We performed robust linear regressions on a sample of 120 females (age range 20-65 years) to characterize age- (n = 120) and menopause-related (n = 59) declines in cognitive control (as assessed by the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test) and to determine whether they are modulated by different facets of bilingual language experience, including the diversity of language use (i.e., language entropy) in home and workplace environments. Workplace but not home language diversity modulated age- and menopause-related declines in cognitive control, suggesting that females may compensate for decline by virtue of adapting to the externally imposed demands of the language environment. These findings have implications for identifying which aspects of bilingual experience may contribute to cognitive reserve in healthy aging. Abstract
Background Multifaceted dimensions influence the quality of life among post-menopausal women. Osteoporosis, a condition characterized by fragile bones, poses a significant risk, potentially leading to fractures and decreased wellbeing. This study aims to assess the quality of life of postmenopausal women, its determinants, and also the risk of osteoporosis among them. Methods A cross-sectional study was done among 379 post-menopausal women residing in rural and urban areas of Ernakulam district, Kerala, India. They were selected by probability proportional to size sampling from 10 clusters. Quality of life was measured using MENQOL-I questionnaire and osteoporosis risk assessment was done using OSTA score. Results The study participants had a mean age of 60 years, (standard deviation of 6.83 years). On average, menopause occurred at 50.58 years (standard deviation of 4.28 years). The most common symptoms impacting quality of life among postmenopausal women were psychosocial symptoms, followed by physical and vasomotor symptoms. Furthermore, a high proportion (63.6%) of participants were at risk for osteoporosis. History of fracture, concern of falling, marital status and having an insurance, are factors associated with various domains of quality of life. Conclusion This study underscores the complex interplay of demographic factors, menopausal experiences, and their impact on the participants' quality of life. The prevalence of psychosocial symptoms and the significant risk of osteoporosis call for tailored healthcare interventions. Postmenopausal women with history of fracture, high concern of fall and single women require special attention. Encouraging women to take up selfcare practices will help during the menopausal transition to have a good quality of life.

Abstract
Background: The aim of this study was to assess the effect of a single session of EMG biofeedback in a group of postmenopausal women on improving technique in pelvic floor muscle (PFM) contractions (exercises). Methods: Sixty-two women aged 60 to 85 years (69 ± 4; mean ± SD) participated in the study. We assessed the technique of PFM exercises via surface electromyography (EMG) using a vaginal probe. A single assessment sequence consisted of 11 exercises involving the conscious contraction of the PFM, during which the order of activation for selected muscles was determined. We then awarded scores for exercise technique on a scale from 0 to 4, where 4 represented the best technique and 0 represented no activation of PFMs. In the second assessment, we used a biofeedback method to teach PFM exercise technique. Results: In total, 32% (n = 20) of the participants were unable to correctly perform the first PFM contraction, scoring 0.9 ± 0.79. After a single EMG biofeedback session, these women received 1.7 ± 1.08 scores (p = 0.003). In the tenth exercise, there was also a statistically significant improvement between the first (baseline) and second assessment (1.7 ± 1.34 and 2.15 ± 1.09, respectively; p = 0.037). For the remaining exercises, the results were not statistically significant, but we observed a positive trend of change. Conclusions: The use of a single EMG biofeedback session is an effective method of improving technique in PFM exercises in a group of women who initially performed them incorrectly.

Abstract
Background and Objective: Menopause can be associated with many clinical manifestations: vasomotor symptoms, urogenital problems, and additional psychological disturbances, such as anxiety, mood changes, and sleep alterations. The prolonged lack of hormones also increases the risk of long-term consequences. Hormone Replacement Treatment (HRT) in menopause consists of the administration of estrogen, alone or associated to progesterone, to relieve these uncomfortable disturbances and to prevent the onset of other pathologic conditions. The aim of this study is to examine the prevalence of HRT use in a sample of menopausal women and their experience with menopause and HRT. This study also investigates the knowledge of general practitioners (GPs) and gynecologists about HRT and its prescription. Materials and Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional population survey on 126 women of 50-59 years in an industrial city in the North of Italy, Vercelli (Novara), in Eastern Piedmont. We also presented a questionnaire on the topic to 54 medical doctors (GPs and gynecologists) of the same area. Results: The prevalence of HRT use in our sample was 11.9%. In total, a good percentage of the users affirmed to be satisfied with HRT. Additionally, a minority of women reported being ideally against the use of replacement hormones, were advised against using HRT by doctors, and did not use it because of the fear of side effects. We found a positive association between patient education, health care attitude, and HRT usage. A significant number of women knew about HRT from the media, and most of them were not informed by a health professional. Despite this, the interviewed doctors considered their knowledge about HRT as 'good' and would recommend HRT: only 5.6% would not prescribe it. Conclusions: Our results highlight the need for information about HRT among patients and health professionals, along with the need for more effective communication, evaluation, and suggestion of treatment.

Abstract
IMPORTANCE Physical activity during menopause can be effective in reducing the physiological changes associated with reproductive aging that increase risks for noncommunicable diseases, yet many women do not meet the recommendations for physical activity. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to synthesize factors influencing physical activity for women across menopausal transition phases using a socioecological approach. EVIDENCE REVIEW The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis was used to systematically search 10 databases between 2001 and 2021. A comprehensive search strategy was used to identify studies on physical activity of women in various stages of menopause. A socioecological model was used to categorize the reported barriers and enablers. FINDINGS Twenty studies met the inclusion criteria. The findings highlight several intrapersonal barriers such as existing health complaints versus enablers such as awareness of the health benefits of physical activity during menopause. Ensuring women's safety, preventing injury, and enhancing exercise self-efficacy were important components of programs. Social support was also an important enabler of women's engagement in activities. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE Several barriers and enablers were identified and can inform practitioners and future interventions to encourage physical activity among women in various stages of menopause. For instance, when encouraging physical activity during menopause, practitioners should consider other health complaints, safety, and injury prevention while discussing the benefits of physical activity related to managing menopausal symptoms. There was a lack of theoretically informed studies exploring the barriers and enablers to physical activity for women in various stages of menopause; thus, research designs may not have fully accounted for influences. Future research that combines socioecological and individual theories of behavior is needed to comprehensively understand the complexity of physical activity among women across the menopausal transition.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Menopausal and postmenopausal women experience many physical and psychological symptoms. The positive effects of aromatherapy sessions with different oils on menopausal symptoms are well known. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of an aromatherapy massage with peppermint and lemon essential oil on menopausal symptoms. METHODS Total 63 menopausal and postmenopausal women were included in this study. Participants were randomly divided into three groups: Menta peppermint (n = 21), Citrus lemon (n = 21), and Placebo (n = 21). The peppermint and lemon essential oils of the intervention groups were diluted with 1.5 % sweet almond oil. Pure sweet almond oil was used in the placebo group. Each participant in the massage groups received a hand and arm massage with the selected oil twice a week for 4 weeks in 30-min sessions. Participants' menopausal symptoms were assessed before and after application using the Menopause Symptoms Rating Scale (MRS). RESULTS When the differences in the treatment groups according to time were examined, it was found that there were statistically significant differences in lemon (F = 9.561, p = 0.003, η2 = 0.139) and peppermint essential oil (F = 15.687, p = 0.001, η2 = 0.210) groups according to time. The peppermint essential oil group was more effective than the lemon group. In addition, both peppermint and lemon essential oils were effective for somatic symptoms (p < 0.05). For psychological symptoms, only the lemon oil (p = 0.011) proved effective, and for urogenital symptoms, only the peppermint essential oil (p = 0.001). CONCLUSION The study found that aromatherapy massage with peppermint and lemon essential oil effectively reduced menopausal symptoms. Peppermint essential oil was more effective than lemon essential oil in reducing the menopausal symptoms. THE CLINICAL TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER NCT05677698.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Ovarian aging is a continuous process comprising a gradual decrease in both the quantity and the quality of the oocytes. A decline in ovarian function leads to chronic disease and physiological problems. The aim of this study is to establish a cohort for the purpose of examining the ovarian aging process and its relationship with health status and quality of life in women across all age groups. METHOD This protocol outlines a community-based, prospective long-term observational study involving 1676 women recruited from Caofeidian District in Tangshan City, Hebei Province, China. Data are gathered by the administration of questionnaires, doing physical examinations, performing blood biochemistry tests, and measuring levels of female hormones. The primary outcomes will be the occurrence of cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, hypertension, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, and other chronic diseases, assessed according to established diagnostic criteria for each disease. The secondary outcome will be the decline in quality of life during the follow-up period, assessed by the modified Kupperman Index. The study comprises a baseline cross-sectional assessment and a follow-up evaluation. The participants will undergo face-to-face interviews as part of their regular medical examinations until 2026 or until the occurrence of outcome events. DISCUSSION The results of the prospective study will indicate the association between ovarian aging and the prevalence of chronic diseases as well as diminished quality of life among women across different age categories.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Perimenopause is a critical transitional period in reproductive ageing. A set of physiological and psychological changes can affect perimenopausal women's quality of life and further threaten their older adult health conditions. In China, less than one-third of midlife women with menopausal symptoms have actively sought professional healthcare. Regarding the public health significance of comprehensive menopause management, the current study aims to investigate the effects of a therapeutic lifestyle modification (TLM) intervention on cardiometabolic health, sexual functioning and health-related quality of life among perimenopausal Chinese women. METHOD AND ANALYSIS A randomised controlled trial with two parallel arms will be conducted at the gynaecology outpatient department of Yunnan Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine in China. 94 eligible perimenopausal women aged between 40 and 55 years will be recruited for the study. The TLM intervention consists of four elements: menopause-related health education, dietary guidance, pelvic floor muscle training and Bafa Wubu Tai Chi exercise. Participants will be randomly assigned (1:1) to receive either the 12-week TLM intervention or routine care via stratified blocked randomisation. The primary outcome is quality of life; secondary outcomes of interest include sexual functioning and cardiometabolic health. The outcome measures will be assessed at baseline and post-intervention. To explore the effects of the intervention, linear mixed models will be applied to test the changes between the two groups over time in each outcome based on an intention-to-treat analysis. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION The Research Ethics Review Committee of Chulalongkorn University (COA No 178/66) and the Medical Ethics Committee of Yunnan Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine (IRB-AF-027-2022/02-02) approved the study protocol. Written informed consent will be obtained from all participants. Results will be published in peer-reviewed journals and disseminated through conferences. TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER ChiCTR2300070648.

Abstract
Objective To use natural language processing (NLP) of clinical notes to augment existing structured electronic health record (EHR) data for classification of a patient's menopausal status. Materials and methods A rule-based NLP system was designed to capture evidence of a patient's menopause status including dates of a patient's last menstrual period, reproductive surgeries, and postmenopause diagnosis as well as their use of birth control and menstrual interruptions. NLP-derived output was used in combination with structured EHR data to classify a patient's menopausal status. NLP processing and patient classification were performed on a cohort of 307 512 female Veterans receiving healthcare at the US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Results NLP was validated at 99.6% precision. Including the NLP-derived data into a menopause phenotype increased the number of patients with data relevant to their menopausal status by 118%. Using structured codes alone, 81 173 (27.0%) are able to be classified as postmenopausal or premenopausal. However, with the inclusion of NLP, this number increased 167 804 (54.6%) patients. The premenopausal category grew by 532.7% with the inclusion of NLP data. Discussion By employing NLP, it became possible to identify documented data elements that predate VA care, originate outside VA networks, or have no corresponding structured field in the VA EHR that would be otherwise inaccessible for further analysis. Conclusion NLP can be used to identify concepts relevant to a patient's menopausal status in clinical notes. Adding NLP-derived data to an algorithm classifying a patient's menopausal status significantly increases the number of patients classified using EHR data, ultimately enabling more detailed assessments of the impact of menopause on health outcomes.

Abstract
The term "ovarian insufficiency" describes the decline of ovarian function resulting in fertility loss and the marked decrease of ovarian steroid hormone production. From a clinical standpoint, ovarian insufficiency presents in three different settings. The first is natural menopause at midlife occurring at the average age of 51 years. The second arises after surgical oophorectomy owing to disease or elective cancer prophylaxis. Finally, primary or premature ovarian insufficiency is characterized by menopause occurring before age 40, often of undetermined etiology, but at times linked with genetic mutations, autoimmune syndromes, metabolic conditions, iatrogenic etiologies, and toxic exposures. Each clinical situation presents unique concerns and management challenges. The majority of women with intact ovaries who live to age 51 experience natural menopause, with early menopause <45 years. In the United States, surgical menopause with bilateral oophorectomy occurs in ∼600,000 women per year. The timing and specific clinical indication for oophorectomy alters management. Primary ovarian insufficiency occurs in 1% of women, although recent estimates suggest the prevalence may be increasing. Symptoms of ovarian insufficiency include hot flashes or vasomotor symptoms, mood disorders, sleep disruption, and vaginal/urinary symptoms. Health concerns include bone, cardiovascular, and cognitive health. Management of symptoms and preventive strategies varies depending upon the age, clinical situation, and specific health concerns of each individual. Treatment options for symptom relief include cognitive behavior therapy and hypnosis, nonhormonal prescription therapies, and hormone therapy. Tailoring the therapeutic approach over time in response to age, emerging medical issues, and patient desires constitutes individualized care.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to compare the efficacy and safety of oral and transdermal estradiol in alleviating menopausal symptoms. METHOD A total of 257 recently menopausal women were randomized into two groups. The t-E2 group received transdermal estradiol (2.5 g per day) (n = 128) and the o-E2V group received oral estradiol valerate (2 mg per day) (n = 129) for 24 weeks; both groups received micronized progesterone (200 mg per day). The primary outcome measure is the change in the modified Kupperman Menopausal Index (KMI) after 24 weeks of treatment. Menopausal symptoms were recorded at screening and at 4, 12 and 24 weeks using both the KMI and the Menopause Rating Scale (MRS). RESULTS Significant amelioration was observed by KMI and MRS scores for both groups after treatment (p < 0.001). The mean KMI scores showed no difference between the two groups. The mean MRS scores were similar between the two groups at baseline and after 4 weeks of treatment. The results showed statistical differences after 12 weeks and 24 weeks of treatment (p = 0.005 and p = 0.011). Both the after-treatment scores minus the baseline scores of KMI and MRS and the incidence of adverse effects showed no difference between the two groups. CONCLUSIONS This study shows that both transdermal and oral estradiol are effective in relieving menopausal symptoms, with little difference in treatment efficacy and safety. Abstract
Menopause eventually happens to all people with typically functioning ovaries, and almost one billion women worldwide are postmenopausal. Although the biology of typical menopause is ubiquitous, the experience varies substantially. Factors contributing to the experience include not only individual factors, such as the nature and severity of symptoms, but also psychological, social, and contextual considerations, many of which are modifiable. In this first paper in the Lancet Series on menopause, we argue for a new approach that goes beyond the treatment of specific symptoms, to encompass a broad model to support women transitioning this life stage, using the model of empowerment. WHO defines empowerment as an active process of gaining knowledge, confidence, and self-determination to self-manage health and make informed decisions about care. Rather than focusing on menopause as an endocrine deficiency, we propose an empowerment model that recognises factors modifying the experience, in which the patient is an expert in their own condition and the health-care worker supports the patient to become an equal and active partner in managing their own care.

Abstract
Introduction Despite evidence from preclinical studies suggesting estrogen's neuroprotective effects, the use of menopausal hormone therapy (MHT) to support cognitive function remains controversial. Methods We used random-effect meta-analysis and multi-level meta-regression to derive pooled standardized mean difference (SMD) and 95% confidence intervals (C.I.) from 34 randomized controlled trials, including 14,914 treated and 12,679 placebo participants. Results Associations between MHT and cognitive function in some domains and tests of interest varied by formulation and treatment timing. While MHT had no overall effects on cognitive domain scores, treatment for surgical menopause, mostly estrogen-only therapy, improved global cognition (SMD=1.575, 95% CI 0.228, 2.921; P=0.043) compared to placebo. When initiated specifically in midlife or close to menopause onset, estrogen therapy was associated with improved verbal memory (SMD=0.394, 95% CI 0.014, 0.774; P=0.046), while late-life initiation had no effects. Overall, estrogen-progestogen therapy for spontaneous menopause was associated with a decline in Mini Mental State Exam (MMSE) scores as compared to placebo, with most studies administering treatment in a late-life population (SMD=-1.853, 95% CI -2.974, -0.733; P = 0.030). In analysis of timing of initiation, estrogen-progestogen therapy had no significant effects in midlife but was associated with improved verbal memory in late-life (P = 0.049). Duration of treatment >1 year was associated with worsening in visual memory as compared to shorter duration. Analysis of individual cognitive tests yielded more variable results of positive and negative effects associated with MHT. Discussion These findings suggest time-dependent effects of MHT on certain aspects of cognition, with variations based on formulation and timing of initiation, underscoring the need for further research with larger samples and more homogeneous study designs.

Abstract
The menopausal transition period spans, on average, 2-8 years before the final menstrual period and is associated with an increase in clinical and subclinical cardiovascular risk. In this Review, we discuss the metabolic and cardiovascular changes that occur during the menopausal transition period and the role of ovarian ageing, chronological ageing and other ageing-related risk factors in mediating these changes. Disentangling the relative contributions of chronological and reproductive ageing to cardiovascular risk is challenging, but data from longitudinal studies in women transitioning from premenopause to post-menopause have provided valuable insights. We also discuss evidence on how cardiovascular risk is altered by premature or early menopause, surgical menopause, and vasomotor and other menopausal symptoms. Whether targeted interventions can slow the progression of atherosclerosis and subclinical disease during the menopausal transition, thus delaying or preventing the onset of cardiovascular events, remains to be determined. Furthermore, we consider the recommended strategies for cardiovascular risk reduction in women undergoing menopausal transition using the framework of the American Heart Association's Life's Essential 8 key measures for improving and maintaining cardiovascular health, and discuss the cardiovascular risks and benefits of menopausal hormone therapy. Finally, we also discuss novel therapies that might benefit this population in reducing cardiovascular risk.

Abstract
Purpose of Review Black patients suffer from breast cancer-related racial health disparities, which could have implications on their gynecologic care. This review explores considerations in the gynecologic care of Black breast cancer survivors. Recent Findings Black people have a higher risk of leiomyoma and endometrial cancer, which could confound bleeding patterns such as in the setting of tamoxifen use. As Black people are more likely to have early-onset breast cancer, this may have implications on long-term bone and heart health. Black patients may be more likely to have menopausal symptoms at baseline and as a result of breast cancer treatment. Furthermore, Black patients are less likely to utilize assisted reproductive technology and genetic testing services. Summary It is important for healthcare providers to be well-versed in the intersections of breast cancer and gynecologic care. Black breast cancer survivors may have unique considerations for which practitioners should be knowledgeable.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to determine how women felt cold water swimming affected their menstrual and perimenopausal symptoms. STUDY DESIGN An online survey that asked women who regularly swim in cold water about their experiences. The survey was advertised for 2 months on social media. Questions related to cold water swimming habits and menstrual and perimenopausal symptoms were analysed. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Quantitative and qualitative data including; frequency of menstrual and menopause symptoms, the effect of cold water swimming on these symptoms. RESULTS 1114 women completed the survey. Women reported that cold water swimming reduced their menstrual symptoms, notably psychological symptoms such as anxiety (46.7%), mood swings (37.7%) and irritability (37.6%). Perimenopausal women reported a significant improvement in anxiety (46.9%), mood swings (34.5%), low mood (31.1%) and hot flushes (30.3%). The majority of women with symptoms swam specifically to reduce these symptoms (56.4% for period and 63.3% for perimenopause symptoms). Women said they felt it was the physical and mental effects of the cold water that helped their symptoms. For the free text question, five themes were identified: the calming and mood-boosting effect of the water, companionship and community, period improvements, an improvement in hot flushes and an overall health improvement. CONCLUSION Women felt that cold water swimming had a positive overall effect on menstrual and perimenopause symptoms. Studies on other forms of exercise to relieve menstrual and perimenopause symptoms may show similar findings.

Abstract
According to the World Health Organization, cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death among women worldwide, yet its magnitude is often underestimated. Biological and gender differences affect health, diagnosis, and healthcare in numerous ways. The lack of sex and gender awareness in health research and healthcare is an ongoing issue that affects not only research but also treatment and outcomes. The importance of recognizing the impacts of both sex and gender on health and of knowing the differences between the two in healthcare is beginning to gain ground. There is more appreciation of the roles that biological differences (sex) and sociocultural power structures (gender) have, and both sex and gender affect health behavior, the development of diseases, their diagnosis, management, and the long-term effects of an illness. An important issue is the knowledge and awareness of women about vascular diseases. The risk of cardiovascular events is drastically underestimated by women themselves, as well as by those around them. The purpose of this review is to draw attention to improving the medical care and treatment of women with vascular diseases.

Abstract
Sex- and age-related differences in symptom prevalence and severity have been widely reported in patients with schizophrenia, yet the underlying mechanisms contributing to these differences are not well understood. N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor hypofunction contributes to schizophrenia pathology, and preclinical models often use NMDA receptor antagonists, including MK-801, to model all symptom clusters. Quantitative electroencephalography (qEEG) represents a translational approach to measure neuronal activity, identify targetable biomarkers in neuropsychiatric disorders and evaluate possible treatments. Abnormalities in gamma power have been reported in patients with schizophrenia and correspond to psychosis and cognitive impairment. Further, as gamma power reflects cortical glutamate and GABA signaling, it is highly sensitive to changes in NMDA receptor function, and NMDA receptor antagonists aberrantly increase gamma power in rodents and humans. To evaluate the role of sex and age on NMDA receptor function, MK-801 (0.03-0.3 mg/kg, SC) was administered to 3- and 9-month-old male and female Sprague-Dawley rats that were implanted with wireless EEG transmitters to measure cortical brain function. MK-801-induced elevations in gamma power were observed in 3-month-old male and female and 9-month-old male rats. In contrast, 9-month-old female rats demonstrated blunted maximal elevations across a wide dose range. Importantly, MK-801-induced hyperlocomotor effects, a common behavioral screen used to examine antipsychotic-like activity, were similar across all groups. Overall, sex-by-age-related differences in gamma power support using qEEG as a translational tool to evaluate pathological progression and predict treatment response across a heterogeneous population.

Abstract
Metabolic health is characterized by optimal blood glucose, lipids, cholesterol, blood pressure, and adiposity. Alterations in these characteristics may lead to the development of type 2 diabetes mellitus or dyslipidemia. Recent evidence suggests that female reproductive characteristics may be overlooked as risk factors that contribute to later metabolic dysfunction. These reproductive traits include the age at menarche, menstrual irregularity, the development of polycystic ovary syndrome, gestational weight change, gestational dysglycemia and dyslipidemia, and the severity and timing of menopausal symptoms. These risk factors may themselves be markers of future dysfunction or may be explained by shared underlying etiologies that promote long-term disease development. Disentangling underlying relationships and identifying potentially modifiable characteristics have an important bearing on therapeutic lifestyle modifications that could ease long-term metabolic burden. Further research that better characterizes associations between reproductive characteristics and metabolic health, clarifies underlying etiologies, and identifies indicators for clinical application is warranted in the prevention and management of metabolic dysfunction.

Abstract
Background Non-motor symptoms of Parkinson's disease (PD) are highly prevalent and heterogenic. Previous studies aimed to gain more insight on this heterogeneity by investigating age and gender differences in non-motor symptom severity, but findings were inconsistent. Furthermore, besides examining the single effects of age and gender, the interaction between them in relation to non-motor functioning has -as far as we know- not been investigated before. Objectives To investigate the association of age and gender identity -as well as the interaction between age and gender identity- with non-motor symptoms and their impact on quality of life. Methods We combined three large and independent studies. This approach resulted in a total number of unique participants of 1,509. We used linear regression models to assess the association of age and gender identity, and their interaction, with non-motor symptoms and their impact on quality of life. Results Older people with PD generally had worse cognitive functioning, worse autonomic functioning and worse quality of life. Women with PD generally experienced more anxiety, worse autonomic functioning and worse quality of life compared to men with PD, whereas men with PD generally had worse cognitive functioning. In interaction analyses by age and gender identity, depressive symptoms and anxiety were disproportionally worse with increasing age in women compared to men. Conclusion Our findings indicate that both age and gender -as well as their interaction- are differentially associated with non-motor symptoms of PD. Both research and clinical practice should pay more attention to demographic subgroups differences and possible different treatment approaches with respect to age and gender. We showed how combining datasets is of added value in this kind of analyses and encourage others to use similar approaches.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES An increasing number of women living with HIV are transitioning through midlife and menopause. Women living with HIV may experience earlier menopause and a higher symptom burden than women without HIV, but more evidence is needed. Data collection on menopause in women living with HIV is scarce and often not standardized. We sought to assess how menopause data are collected in cohorts and studies of women living with HIV. METHODS This was a literature review conducted within the PubMed database. We included original studies and cohorts assessing menopause and/or menopausal symptoms in women living with HIV. Study characteristics and menopause data collection, including the definition of menopause, symptom assessment tools, and measurement of biomedical parameters, were noted and summarized systematically in data tables. RESULTS We included 40 articles describing 37 separate studies published between 2000 and 2023; 27 of these were conducted in high-income countries, the majority in the USA (n = 16). Ten studies were from low- and middle-income countries; four of these were conducted in Brazil. In 20 studies, menopause was defined according to the World Health Organization's definition of over 12 months of amenorrhea. Twelve studies used the Menopause Rating Scale to characterize menopausal symptoms, five studies used other specified symptom assessment tools, and 12 studies used a study-specific tool. CONCLUSIONS Menopause data collection in women living with HIV is heterogeneous. We propose that standardized tools should be used to enable comparisons between studies and countries, thereby improving the quality of research and clinical treatment. Further research into the validity of menopausal symptom scoring tools is warranted.

Abstract
Menopause is a significant milestone in a woman's life, characterized by decreasing estradiol (E2) and increasing follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) levels. Growing evidence suggests that air pollution may affect reproductive health and disrupt hormone profiles, yet the associations in women undergoing menopausal transition (MT) remains underexplored. We examined the associations between annual air pollutant exposures and repeated measures of E2 and FSH in 1365 women with known final menstrual period (FMP) date from the Study of Women's Health Across the Nation. Air pollution was calculated as the annual averages of 24-h average PM2.5 levels, daily one-hour maximum NO2 levels, and daily 8-h maximum O3 levels. Linear mixed models with piece-wise linear splines were used to model non-linear trajectories of E2 and FSH in three distinct time periods: up to 2 years before the FMP (early MT), within 2 years before and 2 years after FMP (transmenopause), and >2 years post-FMP (postmenopause). In the transmenopausal period, an interquartile (5 μg/m3) increase in PM2.5 was associated with a significant decrease in E2 levels (-15.7 %, 95 % CI: -23.7, -6.8), and a 10 ppb increase in NO2 was associated with a significant decrease in E2 levels (-9.2 %, 95 % CI: -16.2, -1.7). A higher PM2.5 was also associated with an accelerated rate of decline in E2. Regarding FSH, a 10 ppb increase in NO2 was associated with decline in FSH levels (-11.7 %, 95 % CI: -21.8, -0.1) in the early MT and accelerated rates of decline in the postmenopause (-1.1 % per year, 95 % CI: -2.1, -0.1). Additionally, inverse associations between O3 and FSH were observed in the transmenopause and postmenopause. Our study suggests that increases in PM2.5, NO2, and O3 exposures are linked to significant declines in E2 and FSH levels across menopausal stages, suggesting the detrimental impact of air pollutants on women's reproductive hormones.

Abstract
With greater survival rates after catastrophic injury, more women with traumatic brain injury (TBI) are living longer than ever. However, knowledge about this transition in these women is largely unexamined and there are no scales that have been developed to assess the experience of symptoms. To address this gap, we developed and tested a new scale of menopause symptoms in midlife women with TBI. We selected candidate items from two existing measures based on feedback from focus group discussions with seven women with TBI. Twenty candidate items were tested in cognitive interviews with six women with TBI/1 non-TBI. Then, these were field tested with 221 participants (TBI, n = 68; non-TBI, n = 153) recruited from registries. Rasch analysis and convergent validity testing were used to evaluate the new scale. Results of the Rasch analysis indicate that overall, the scale fits well the Rasch model with evidence for unidimensionality. Differential item functioning indicated that the scale performed equally well for women with and without TBI and distinguished pre- and post-menopausal states. Convergent validity was found in the expected directions. These findings support further development of the new scale to understand the experience of menopause symptoms among women with TBI.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study investigated the test-retest reliability and minimal detectable change (MDC) of muscle strength and physical performance tests in women older than 40 years. METHODS A total of 113 women, aged 58 ± 11 years (82% postmenopausal women), with a body mass index of 28.5 ± 5.8 kg/m 2 , participated in this study. One-repetition maximum (1RM) tests were conducted for seven strength exercises: 45° leg press, bench press, leg extension, pec deck, wide-grip lateral pull-down, leg curl, and seated cable row, with a retest after 48 hours. Timed Up and Go (TUG), 6-minute walk, and 30-second sit-to-stand tests were performed on the same day and retested after 72 hours. The tests and retests were administered by the same evaluators. Relative reliability (consistency of participant rank between test-retest) was assessed using the intraclass correlation coefficient for consistency and agreement, and absolute reliability (precision of score) was assessed using the MDC based on the standard error of prediction. RESULTS The 1RM and performance tests exhibited excellent reliability: 45° leg press (consistency, 0.99; agreement, 0.98), bench press (consistency, 0.96; agreement, 0.96), leg extension (consistency, 0.93; agreement, 0.91), pec deck (consistency, 0.90; agreement, 0.88), wide-grip lateral pull-down (consistency, 0.91; agreement, 0.89), leg curl (consistency, 0.84; agreement, 0.83), seated cable row (consistency, 0.92; agreement, 0.94), TUG (consistency, 0.87; agreement, 0.87), 6-minute walk (consistency, 0.96; agreement, 0.95), and 30-second sit to stand (consistency, 0.85; agreement, 0.80). These tests showed meaningful MDC values, particularly for the 1RM test performed on the machine and the 30-second sit-to-stand test: 45° leg press, 22.2 kg (15%); bench press, 4.9 kg (19%); leg extension, 9.2 kg (35%); pec deck, 8.8 kg (44%); wide-grip lateral pull-down, 9.4 kg (31%); leg curl, 9.2 kg (51%); seated cable row, 11.4 kg (29%); TUG, 1.4 seconds (20%); 6-minute walk, 50.9 m (10%); and 30-second sit to stand, 4.6 reps (30%). CONCLUSIONS Although the muscle strength and physical performance tests demonstrate excellent relative reliability in women older than 40 years, they exhibit low absolute reliability, particularly the 1RM test performed on the machine and the 30-second sit-to-stand test. Therefore, although these tests show good consistency in the positioning of women within the group after repeated measures, their precision measure is relatively low (high fluctuation). Changes in these tests that are smaller than the MDC may not indicate real changes in women at middle age and older.

Abstract
Menopause occurs around midlife and is an inevitable component of women's aging. The study aimed to investigate the associations between the lifetime prevalence of menopausal symptoms and health-related characteristics among Israeli postmenopausal women aged 55-75 years. Additionally, this study aimed to estimate the use of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and women's attitudes toward this treatment. Data for this study were extracted from a cross-sectional national telephone survey conducted in Israel between 2018 and 2020. For the current study, only postmenopausal women aged 55-75 years were included. Multivariate analyses were used to identify demographic and health-related characteristics associated with menopausal symptoms. The study included 688 participants. Most (68.8%) reported one or more menopausal symptoms, specifically vasomotor symptoms (50.4%). According to the multivariate logistic regression analysis, menopausal symptoms were associated with moderate-high anxiety and/or depression symptoms (OR = 2.01, 95% CI 1.12-3.58) and with osteoporosis (OR = 1.78, 95% CI 1.08-2.92). Although most (78.3%) symptomatic women were bothered by their symptoms, 29.1% received any treatment for symptom relief and only 12.6% reported current or past use of HRT. The findings show that menopausal symptoms were associated with a higher prevalence of anxiety and/or depression symptoms and osteoporosis in the years following menopause. Most symptomatic women did not receive any treatment and the majority were against HRT. Knowledge and awareness about menopause and treatment options should be increased among Israeli women. Additionally, the promotion of positive attitudes toward menopause and HRT use among women and healthcare providers is strongly recommended.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Obesity during perimenopausal transition can be attributed to various factors. Identifying these factors is crucial in preventing obesity and developing effective strategies to manage weight during this phase. This review aimed to systematically understand predictors of obesity during menopausal transition. METHODS The review followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines and searched databases like PubMed, Wiley Online Library, and Cochrane Reviews. Cohort and cross-sectional studies in English language assessing obesity among menopausal women were included. The methodological quality was assessed using Joanna Briggs Checklist for critical appraisal. Risk of Bias (RoB) was generated using Review Manager 5.4.1 (RevMan). Identified predictors were assessed for overall quality of evidence using adopted Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) approach. RESULTS This review encompassed 42 studies, (21 cross-sectional and 21 cohort) with sample ranging from 164 to 107,243 across studies. Higher parity( ≥ 3 children) emerged as a strong predictor of obesity across seven studies, with good-quality evidence. Lower physical activity was another predictor, supported by eight studies with good-quality evidence. Sociodemographic factors like lower education(<8 years or < than college degree), socioeconomic background, menopausal transition, and older age at menarche showed associations with weight gain, with moderate-quality evidence. Lifestyle factors (high-fat consumption, sedentariness, active smoking status, and psychological difficulties) also showed moderate-quality evidence. CONCLUSION This review underscores the multifaceted factors associated with obesity during the perimenopausal transition. Identifying these factors will be helpful in prevention and management of obesity among these women.
