Abstract
Effect of twin-screw extrusion on soluble dietary fiber (SDF) from sweet potato residues (SPRs) were investigated using optimized conditions, at screw speed of 180 rpm, feed rate at 17 Hz, feed moisture at 40% and extrusion temperature at 150 °C. Extruded SDF, showed higher SDF levels (9.63%-29.25%), cholesterol and sodiumcholate adsorption capacity, radical scavenging capacity, and inhibition of digestive enzymes. Moreover, extrusion effectively reduced particle size and molecularweight of SDF, modulated monosaccharide ratios, and increased water retention capacity (WRC), oil retention capacity (ORC), swelling capacity (SC) and glucose absorption capacity (GAC). Additionally, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) demonstrated decomposition of macromolecules of SDF to smaller fractions and formation of a porous morphology following extrusion. Furthermore, the extruded SDF increased thermal stability as determined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Overall, the SDF from SPRs with improved functional and physiochemical properties could be used as a functional additive in diverse food products.

Abstract
Pectin polysaccharide is an important phytochemical with potential biomedical applications. It is commonly measured by time-consuming destructive chemical methods. This work demonstrates the feasibility of using visible and near-infrared hyperspectral imaging (HSI) techniques to rapidly measure pectin polysaccharides in intact mulberry fruits. Based on spatial information provided by HSI images, the representative spectrum of each whole mulberry was accurately extracted without background. The effects of storage temperature on two varieties of mulberries for model establishment were studied. The performances of two spectral ranges obtained by Si and InGaAs CCD detectors for pectin prediction were compared. The best predictions were obtained from dilute alkali soluble pectin and total soluble pectin in Dashi mulberry fruit stored at room temperature, with residual predictive deviation values of 2.317 and 1.935, respectively. Our results show that HSI is a promising alternative to the chemical method to rapidly and nondestructively measure the pectin content.

Abstract
Soluble fibers, including pectins from apple and lemon, are commonly used as prebiotic and to prepare functional foods. The present study aimed to investigate the physicochemical and functional properties of pectins extracted from jujubes (Ziziphus jujuba Mill.). Pectins were extracted from jujubes at three stages of harvesting and characterized by FTIR and SEM analyses. Whole milk inoculated with kefir grains was supplemented by 0.25 mg·mL-1 of pectins. The pH value and vitamin C content were evaluated after 24 and 48 h of fermentation. Pectins from jujubes at the first harvesting stage (PJ1K) showed the lowest methoxylation degree. The addition of pectins enhanced the production of vitamin C during heterolactic process. This result was found to depend on jujube harvesting stage as PJ1K stimulated the growth of yeasts in kefir grains yielding to the highest amount of vitamin C (0.83 ± 0.01 µg·mL-1) compared to other samples (0.53-0.60 µg·mL-1) at 24 h. Lactic acid bacteria diminish pH rapidly with respect to control (4.13 ± 0.05), according to the stage of maturation, reducing its initial value by 38.3% in PJ1K. Besides being an excellent prebiotic, pectins from jujubes could be used to enrich kefir with vitamin C.

Abstract
Edible films are popular for the development of food packaging. The suitable additive is the key point for the improvement of edible film performance. In this study, edible films (LTEFs) based on blends of ellagitannins (ET) from the unripe fruits of Rubus chingii Hu, low methoxyl pectin (LMP) and tara gum (TG) were characterized and evaluated. The results showed that the thickness and water resistance were increased with the addition of TG and ET. The content of TG and ET obviously influenced its mechanical properties. FT-IR and SEM results suggested that there were interactions between ET and the film substrates, which modified its structure and connection mode. Moreover, the LTEF showed effective antioxidant activity and antimicrobial activity. These results suggested that TG and ETs had the potential to improve the performance of the pectin film and the LTEF could be used as a functional edible film for application in food industries.

Abstract
Abelmoschus esculentus L (okra) is widely used as a healthy vegetable and favourable source of dietary medicine. Okra flowers which are by-products of okra, are rich in polysaccharide, polyphenols and trace elements etc., however, except a few for health tea, most of them were discarded as the waste of resources. In this study, a polysaccharide named AEFP22 was extracted, purified and identified from okra flowers, and its physicochemical property and antioxidant activity were also elucidated. AEFP22, with a molecular weight of 2.741 × 105 Da, was composed of Rha, GalA and Gal in the ratio of 1: 1.02: 0.86. The methylation and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) analysis indicated AEFP22 was composed of [2)-α-D-Rhap-(1 → 4)-α-D-GalpA-(1 → 2,4)-α-D-Rhap-(1 → 4)-α-D-GalpA-(1] with branch of terminal T-α-D-Galp pointed at C4 of 1,2,4-α-D-Rhap. The Conge-red test, Atomic force microscope (AFM) and Scanning electron microscope (SEM) further revealed the triple-helical conformation, irregular sheet structure with molecule aggregations of AEFP22. The physicochemical property analysis indicated AEFP22 possessed stable thermal property and exhibited shear-thinning and normal Newtonian fluid in different concentrations, -7.04 mV zeta potential and polymerization phenomenon existed in AEFP22 solution. AEFP22 exhibited good 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging ability. These results indicated potential utilization of AEFP22 in nutritional food and material application.

Abstract
Extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) are bacterial products associated to cell wall or secreted to the liquid media that form the framework of microbial mats. These EPS contain functional groups as carboxyl, amino, hydroxyl, phosphate and sulfhydryl, able to interact with cations. Thus, EPS may be considered natural detoxifying compounds of metal polluted waters and wastewaters. In this work Attenuated Total Reflectance-Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) in combination with multivariate analysis (Principal Component Analysis-PCA-) were used to study the interaction of Cd(II), Cu(II) and Zn(II) and Pseudomonas veronii 2E cells, including bound EPS and cell wall, and its different soluble EPS fractions, previously characterized as Cd(II) ligands of moderate strength. Amino groups present in exopolysaccharide fraction were responsible for Zn(II) and Cu(II) complexation, while carboxylates chelated Cd(II). In lipopolysaccharide fraction, phosphoryl and carboxyl sites were involved in Cd(II) and Cu(II) binding, while Zn(II) interacted with amino groups. Similar results were obtained from cells. These studies confirmed that FTIR-PCA is a rapid analytical tool to provide valuable information regarding the functional groups in biomolecules related to metal interaction. Moreover, a discrimination and identification of functional groups present in both EPS and cells that interacted with Cd(II), Zn(II) and Cu(II) was demonstrated.

Abstract
Glycyrrhiza uralensis is a Chinese herbal medicine with various bioactivities. Three fractions (GUPS-I, GUPS-II and GUPS-III) of G. uralensis polysaccharides (GUPS) were obtained with molecular weights of 1.06, 29.1, and 14.9 kDa, respectively. The monosaccharide compositions of GUPS-II and GUPS-III were similar, while that of GUPS-I was distinctively different. The results of scanning electron microscopy, FT-IR, and NMR suggested that GUPS-II and GUPS-III were flaky with a smooth surface and contained α- and β-glycosidic linkages, while GUPS-I was granulated and contained only α-glycosidic linkages. Moreover, GUPS-II and GUPS-III exhibited better bioactivities on the maturation and cytokine production of dendritic cells (DCs) in vitro than that of GUPS-I. An in vivo experiment showed that only GUPS-II significantly enhanced the maturation of DCs. These results indicate that GUPS-II has the potential to be used in combination with cancer immunotherapy to enhance the therapeutic effect.

Abstract
This study used response surface methodology to determine the optimal conditions for extraction of polysaccharides from Pyracantha. fortuneana (PSPF), and studied the mechanism of PSPF-inducing apoptosis in human ovarian carcinoma Skov3 cells. Response surface methodology (RSM) were adopted to extract PSPF. The maximum value of polysaccharide yield was obtained under these optimal conditions. PSPF had good potential as an antioxidant. Exposure of cells to PSPF resulted in cytotoxicity through the induction of apoptosis, and the reactive oxygen species were increased, mitochondrial membrane potential decreased, DNA damage (detected as γ- H2AX and RAD51 foci) was observed in Skov3 cells. In addition, PSPF could induce apoptosis of cancer cells. Therefore, PSPF should be explored as novel potential antioxidants and an anti-tumor drug in a clinical setting.

Abstract
A polysaccharide (PFPP) from purple passion fruit peel was optimally extracted, with the highest yield (10.05%, w/w) obtained under 35 °C extraction temperature, 240 W ultrasonic power, 65:1 mL/g liquid-to-solid ratio, 0.6% (w/v) ammonium oxalate, 30 min extraction time and pH 2.0. According to composition analyses, pectic PFPP and its fractions (PFPP-10, -15 and -20) were revealed as linear homogalacturonans interrupted by rhamnogalacturonan I in different lengths and extensities, where low esterification degrees (35.35-39.66%) were indicated via FT-IR. Furthermore, based on macromolecular models, comprehensive analyses on macromolecular and conformational characterizations of PFPP fractions were conducted quantitatively through, e.g., shape factor (1.42-1.79), Mark-Houwink-Sakurada exponent (0.55-0.74), conformational power-law exponent (0.52-0.58), fractal dimension (1.72-1.94) and persistence length (6.73-13.47 nm). Therefore, different semi-flexible coil conformations were proposed schematically, where lower molecular-weight PFPP fractions were less flexible. This could provide a molecular basis for precise re-utilizations of PFPP in food and pharmaceutical industries.

Abstract
The iron diet supplements: AproFER 1000 and AproTHEM were subjected to various chemical, microbial and magnetic analysis. The microbial analysis revealed no presence of pathogenic bacteria in the studied products. No significant changes in iron content or forms (bivalent/trivalent) were observed in EPR analysis of supplements stored at different conditions for a long period of time. The chemical and magnetic analysis showed that both AproFER 1000 and AproTHEM contain a high concentration of bivalent iron so they can be used as an iron diet supplements.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate structural features and antihyperlipidemic effects of the stigma maydis polysaccharide, termed SMP-1. This polysaccharide was composed of D-mannose, L-rhamnose, D-glucose, D-galactose, L-arabinose, D-xylose, and D-galacturonic acid, with a molar ratio of 1.00:0.21:1.41:1.44:0.70:0.44:0.56. The SMP-1 was mainly bonded by (1 → 6) and (1 → 3) linkages, with various monosaccharides being evenly distributed in the main and side chains. Moreover, SMP-1 had neither triple-helical structure nor molecular aggregation. Importantly, the SMP-1 could effectively bind the bile acids in vitro and significantly lower the total cholesterol, triglyceride, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels, and moderately increase the high-density lipoprotein cholesterol level in poloxamer 407-induced hyperlipidemic mice. Moreover, pretreatment with SMP-1 (≥300 mg/kg) could remarkably reduce fat accumulation and restore hepatocyte morphology in the liver of hyperlipidemic mice. Altogether, these findings indicated that SMP-1 could be developed as a safe and effective food supplement for preventing and treating hyperlipidemic disorders.

Abstract
Lentinus edodes, whose polysaccharides possess diverse bioactivities, commonly grows on hardwood sawdust composed of hemicellulose, lignin and cellulose. In this study the effect of hemicellulose and lignin on the growth of mycelia, as well as the physicochemical properties of polysaccharides from L. edodes mycelia (LEPs) were investigated. The antioxidant properties of LEPs were evaluated through radical scavenging assays in vitro and through the Caenorhabditis elegans model in vivo. The results showed that hemicellulose at a concentration of 4% increased the yield of the mycelia biomass to twice that of the control group. Meanwhile, when cultured with 4.0% hemicellulose, the polysaccharide content of the mycelia was raised by 112.2%. In addition, the appropriate concentration of lignin could stimulate mycelia growth and polysaccharide biosynthesis in L. edodes. Monosaccharide composition analysis showed that a higher content of xylose was found when mycelia were cultured with higher concentrations of hemicellulose. The molecular structure, including the molecular weight distribution and configuration type, was affected by hemicellulose and lignin. Antioxidant assays indicated that LEPs supplemented with hemicellulose and/or lignin possessed higher radical scavenging abilities in vitro and exhibited a thermal resistance effect on C. elegans, implying that the antioxidant effect is potent in vivo. In summary, the addition of hemicellulose and lignin improved the biosynthesis and bioactivity of LEPs.

Abstract
Chitosan (CH) and pectin (PE) are considered as promising biomaterials in developing eco-friendly films due to their film-forming, biodegradable, and non-toxic characteristics, the films from pure CH or PE have obvious defects such as poor barrier and mechanical properties. In this study, the blend films of CH and PE at varying mass ratios were characterized. Structurally, numerous small pores evenly distributed in PE film while big caves unevenly scattered in CH film. CH film is semicrystalline but PE and blend films are totally amorphous, the two individual films presented comparable values in water content and solubility to blend films. The CH film showed lower water vapor permeability and surface wettability and these parameters of the blend films decreased with CH level, the blend films exhibited high transparence as PE film did, which is much higher than that of CH film. Mechanically, the PE film presented higher values in stretchability and tensile strength than CH film. Moreover, in a different blending ratios, synergistic effects were found with several characters of the CH/PE blend film, especially in transparence and mechanical properties. These synergistic effects were ascribed to the intermolecular electrostatic interactions between CH and PE.

Abstract
Mucilage extracted from the parenchymatous and chlorenchymatous tissues of Opuntia robusta were obtained using water or ethanol as the extraction solvent. The changes in the different tissues by using different extraction solvents were evaluated via scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and Raman spectroscopy; in addition, the effect of mucilage coating on the various quality characteristics of tomato (Lycopersicum sculentum) was evaluated. The SEM results showed that the mucilage extracted from the parenchyma had a higher aggregation level that the mucilage extracted from the chlorenchyma. The presence of three characteristic bands of pectic substances in the FT-IR spectra between 1050 and 1120 cm−1 indicated that the mucilage extracted from the parenchymatous tissue had a higher content of pectic compounds than the mucilage extracted from the chlorenchymatous tissue. It was also observed in the Raman spectra that the level of pectic substances in the mucilage extracted from the parenchymatous was higher than that in the mucilage extracted from the chlorenchymatous tissue. The mucilage extracted from the parenchymatous tissue was more effective as an edible coating than the mucilage extracted from the chlorenchymatous tissue. Tomatoes covered with mucilage showed significantly enhanced firmness and reduced weight loss. The uncoated tomatoes showed higher lycopene content than the coated tomatoes on the 21st day. This study showed that the Opuntia robusta tissue and extraction solvent influence mucilage characteristics and that Opuntia robusta mucilage is a promising edible coating.

In the current study, an acidic polysaccharide from the in vitro suspension culture of Fumaria officinalis L. was obtained by extraction with 0.8% (w/v) aqueous ammonium oxalate. The polysaccharide fraction mainly consisted of galacturonic acid (41.0%), followed by galactose (7.3%) and arabinose (5.6%). This suggests the presence of arabinogalactan side chains in the rhamnogalacturonan-I segment of the studied pectin, which was mainly built up by homogalacturonan segments. The pectin was evaluated as low-methyl-esterified (45.0%) with degree of acetylation 3.4%. The polymer fraction was consisted of different molecular weight populations in the range of 6–600 kDa. The high amount of 4-L-hydroxyproline (11.7% of total protein) and the specific positive reaction to Yariv’s phenylglycoside reagent indicated the presence of an arabinogalactan protein in the cell walls. The functional properties of the polysaccharide fraction were evaluated, as it possessed better water-holding capacity than oil-holding capacity. The studied pectin demonstrated significant foaming ability and promising emulsifying properties in a concentration 1%. Therefore, the isolated polysaccharide fraction could be successfully used as emulsifier and foaming agent in food products and pharmaceutical supplements.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The traditional view considers that Chenpi (dried citrus peel) stored over the long-term has better health efficacies compared to fresh Chenpi, although the detailed mechanism responsible for this remains obscure. RESULTS The three water-soluble pectic polysaccharides (CPP1, CPP5 and CPP10) were obtained from 1-, 5- and 10-year Chenpi, respectively, and their physicochemical characteristics and intestinal immunomodulating activities were investigated and compared. The results obtained showed that CPP5 and CPP10 demonstrated a lower dynamic viscosity and degree of methylesterification, as well as a higher molecular heterogeneity, compared to CPP1. Monosaccharide composition analysis indicated that CPP1 was composed of arabinose, galacturonic acid and galactose, and a small amount of rhamnose; however, CPP5 and CPP10 consisted of arabinose, galacturonic acid, galactose, glucose and xylose, and a small amount of rhamnose. With the extension of storage period of Chenpi, the content of soluble conjugate phenolic acids increased in the pectic polysaccharide. Furthermore, it was confirmed that the pectic polysaccharides extracted from the 5-year and 10-year Chenpi could significantly enhance the proliferation of bone marrow cells via activating the Peyer's patch cells in vitro. CONCLUSION The present study demonstrates the differences in the pectic polysaccharides from Chenpi with different storage periods and also confirms that the pectic polysaccharides extracted from Chenpi stored over the long-term had more significant intestinal activities compared to that obtained from the fresh Chenpi. This phenomenon might partly explain why the Chenpi stored over the long-term has better healthcare effects. © 2018 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
Pectins are polysaccharides present commonly in dicotyledonous and non-grass monocotyledonous plants. Depending on the source, pectins may vary in molecular size, degrees of acetylation and methylation and contents of galacturonic acid and neutral sugar residues. Therefore, pectins demonstrate versatile gelling properties and are capable of forming complexes with other natural compounds, and as a result, they are useful for designing food products. This review focuses on the structure-related mechanisms of pectin gelling and linking with other natural compounds such as cellulose, hemicellulose, ferulic acid, proteins, starch, and chitosan. For each system, optimal conditions for obtaining useful functionality for food design are described. This review strongly recommends that pectins, as a natural biocomponent, should be the focus for both the food industry and the bioeconomy since pectins are abundant in fruits and may also be extracted from cell walls in a similar way to cellulose and hemicellulose. However, due to the complexity of the pectin family and the dynamic structural changes during plant organ development, a more intensive study of their structure-related properties is necessary. Fractioning using different solvents at well-defined development stages and an in-depth study of the molecular structure and properties within each fraction and stage, is one possible way to proceed with the investigation.

Abstract
The development of biomaterials-based adhesives is one of the main research directions for the wood-based material industry. In previous research, tannin and sucrose were used as adhesive to manufacture particleboard. However, the reaction conditions need to be optimized. In this study, sulfuric acid was added to the tannin⁻sucrose adhesive as a catalyst to improve the curing process. Thermal analysis, insoluble mass proportion, FT-IR, and solid state 13C NMR were used to investigate the effects of sulfuric acid on the curing behavior of tannin and sucrose. Thermal analysis showed weight loss and endotherm temperature reduced from 205 and 215 to 136 and 138 °C, respectively, by adding sulfuric acid. In case of the adhesive with pH = 1.0, the insoluble mass proportion achieved 81% at 160 °C, which was higher than the reference at 220 °C. FT-IR analysis of the uncured adhesives showed that adding sulfuric acid leads to hydrolysis of sucrose; then, glucose and fructose converted to 5-hydroxymehthylfurfural (HMF) and levulinic acid. Dimethylene ether bridges were observed by FT-IR analysis of the cured adhesives. The results of solid state 13C NMR spectrum indicated that 5-HMF participated in the curing process and formed methylene bridges with the C8 position of the resorcinol A-rings of tannin, whereas dimethylene ether bridges were detected as a major chemical chain of the polymer. Lab particleboards were produced using 20 wt % resin content at 180 °C and 10 min press time; the tannin⁻sucrose adhesive modified with sulfuric acid to pH = 1.0 exhibited better performance than the unmodified tannin⁻sucrose adhesive; the properties of the boards fulfilled the requirement of Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS) A5908 type 15.

Abstract
Nanocomposites, based on iron salts and soluble flaxseed gum (FG), were prepared as potential treatments of iron deficiency anemia (IDA). FG was extracted, characterized, and formulated into iron-loading nanocomposites via ion-exchange against FeCl3, Fe2(SO4)3, FeCl2, and FeSO4·7H2O. FG-iron nanocomposites preparation condition was optimized, and physicochemical properties of the nanocomposites were investigated. In vitro release kinetics of iron in simulated gastric fluid (SGF) was also evaluated. FG heteropolysaccharide, consisting of rhamnose (33.73%), arabinose (24.35%), xylose (14.23%), glucose (4.54%), and galactose (23.15%) monosaccharides, linked together via varieties of glycosidic bonds, was a good recipient for both ferric and ferrous irons under screened conditions (i.e., 80 °C, 2 h, I/G = 1:2). Iron loaded contents in the nanocomposites prepared from FG-FeCl3, FG-Fe2(SO4)3, FG-FeCl2, and FG-FeSO4·7H2O were 25.51%, 10.36%, 5.83%, and 22.83%, respectively. Iron in these nanocomposites was mostly in a bound state, especially in FG-FeCl3, due to chelation forming bonds between iron and polysaccharide hydroxyl or carboxyl groups and formed stable polysaccharide-iron crystal network structures. Free iron ions were effectively removed by ethanol treatments. Because of chelation, the nanocomposites delayed iron release in SGF and the release kinetics were consistent with Korsmeyer-Peppas model. This indicates that such complexes might reduce side effects of free iron in human stomach. Altogether, this study indicates that these synthetic FG-iron nanocomposites might be developed as novel iron supplements for iron deficiency, in which FG-FeCl3 is considered as the best option.

Abstract
The physical and chemical properties of pectin extracts obtained from different white and pink/red varieties of grapefruit [Citrus paradisi (Macf.)], using both conventional heating (CHE) and thermosonication (TS), were investigated. The content of galacturonic acid (GalA), degree of esterification (%DM), color and antioxidant capacity were analyzed. Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) associated with multivariate analysis enabled a structural comparison among the pectin extracts, and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) completed a full landscape of the investigated extracts. Pectin extracts obtained by CHE showed mostly higher GalA than those obtained by TS. All the extracts had a high antioxidant capacity, as determined by 2,2 diphenyl 1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH* ) and 2,2'-Azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) diammonium salt (ABTS* +) assays, and a high correlation with the GalA content. The main differences observed in the FTIR spectra occurred in the 1200 to 900 cm-1 region (differences in GalA). The glass transition temperatures (Tgs) of all extracts were above 85 °C, making them interesting as stabilizing agents for the food industry. PRACTICAL APPLICATION A wide database for the characterization of pectin extracts from grapefruits was obtained. The relationship between the extraction method and the source of pectins, with the physicochemical and antioxidant properties provided great support for their application in the food industry.

Abstract
This study determined the optimal conditions for ultrasound-assisted extraction of a water-soluble polysaccharide, Raw Okra Polysaccharide, from the fruit of okra using response surface methodology. The optimal extraction temperature, extraction time and ultrasonic power were 59°C, 30min and 522W, respectively, giving a yield of 10.35±0.11%. ROP was further isolated, lyophilized and purified using a DEAE-Sepharose Fast Flow column and Sepharose CL-6B column, revealing three elution peaks subsequently designated ROP -1, -2, and -3, respectively. Of these, ROP-2 showed the highest yield, and was therefore selected for physicochemical analysis and evaluation of antioxidant activity. Gas chromatography, fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and high-performance liquid chromatography were used to characterize the primary structural features and molecular weight, revealing that ROP-2 is composed of glucose, mannose, galactose, arabinose, xylose, fructose, and rhamnose (molar percentages: 28.8, 12.5, 13.1, 15.9, 9.2, 13.7, and 6.8%, respectively) and has an average molecular weight of 1.92×105Da. A superoxide radical scavenging assay and DPPH radical scavenging assay further revealed the significant in vitro antioxidant activity of ROP-2. These findings present an effective technique for extraction of the natural antioxidant ROP-2, warranting further analysis of its potential application in the food industry.

Abstract
A new fractionation process was developed to achieve valorization of fruit and vegetable pomaces. The importance of the residues from fruits and vegetables is still growing; therefore; the study presents the novel route of a fractioning process for the conversion of agro-industrial biomasses, such as pomaces, into useful feedstocks with potential application in the fields of fuels, chemicals, and polymers. Hence, the biorefinery process is expected to convert them into various by-products offering a great diversity of low-cost materials. The final product of the process is the cellulose of the biofuel importance. The study presents the novel route of the fractioning process for the conversion of agro-industrial biomasses, such as pomaces, into useful feedstocks with a potential application in the fields of fuels, chemicals, and polymers. Therefore the aim of this paper was to present the novel route of the pomaces fraction and the characterization of residuals. Pomaces from apple, cucumber, carrot, and tomato were treated sequentially with water, acidic solution, alkali solution, and oxidative reagent in order to obtain fractions reach in sugars, pectic polysaccharides, hemicellulose, cellulose, and lignin. Pomaces were characterized by dry matter content, neutral detergent solubles, hemicellulose, cellulose, and lignin. Obtained fractions were characterized by the content of pectins expressed as galacturonic acid equivalent and hemicelluloses expressed as a xyloglucan equivalent. The last fraction and residue was cellulose characterized by crystallinity degree by X-ray diffractometer (XRD), microfibril diameter by atomic force microscope (AFM), and overall morphology by scanning electron microscope (SEM). The hemicelluloses content was similar in all pomaces. Moreover, all the materials were characterized by the high pectins level in extracts evaluated as galacturonic acid content. The lignins content compared with other plant biomasses was on a very low level. The cellulose fraction was the highest in cucumber pomace. The cellulose fraction was characterized by crystallinity degree, microfibril diameter, and overall morphology. Isolated cellulose had a very fine structure with relatively high crystalline index but small crystallites.
