Abstract
Noncovalent functionalization provides an effective way to modulate the electronic properties of graphene. Recent experimental work has demonstrated that hybrids of dipolar phototransductive molecules tethered to graphene are reversibly tunable in doping. We have studied the electronic structure characteristics of chromophore/graphene hybrids using dispersion-corrected density functional theory. The Dirac point of noncovalently functionalized graphene shifts upward via cis-trans isomerism, which is attributed to a change in the chromophore's dipole moment. Our calculation results reveal that the experimentally observed reversible doping of graphene is attributed to the change in charge transfer between the light-switchable chromophore and graphene via isomerization. Furthermore, we show that by varying the electric field perpendicular to the supramolecular functionalized graphene, additional tailoring of graphene doping can be accomplished.

Abstract
We report on the monolithic integration of multimode interference couplers, Bragg gratings, and delay-line interferometers on an electro-optic polymer platform capable of modulation directly at 100 Gb/s. We also report on the hybrid integration of InP active components with the polymer structure using the butt-coupling technique. Combining the passive and the active components, we demonstrate a polymer-based, external cavity laser with 17 nm tuning range and the optical assembly of an integrated 100 Gb/s transmitter, and we reveal the potential of the electro-optic polymer technology to provide the next generation integration platform for complex, ultra-high-speed optical transceivers.

Abstract
A strip-loaded waveguide, electro-optic modulator was designed and analyzed in terms of single mode conditions, optical loss due to the metal electrodes, modulation efficiency, and mode size. Two designs were compared: Design 1 optimized the half-wave voltage (V(π)=1.1 V) with a nearly symmetric waveguide by maximizing modulation efficiency and minimizing the overall thickness of the waveguide; Design 2 optimized the insertion loss by reducing coupling loss by 4.6 dB via a strongly asymmetric waveguide that maximizes the overall mode size to most efficiently overlap with a single mode fiber. Design 2 also has a favorable half-wave voltage (V(π)=1.75 V). Some general guidelines in the selection of cladding layers in a detailed design of a poled-polymer electro-optic modulator incorporating a strip-loaded waveguide structure are suggested.

Abstract
In this paper, electronic structures and third-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of a series of Pt–Pt bond-containing metal complexes have been calculated by using the density functional theory (DFT) combining with the sum-over-states (SOS) method. In order to check the reliability of this method, the electron correlations and basis sets have been compared. Our calculated results show that introduction of electron donor, thiophene ring and lengthing of organic conjugated ligand can enhance third-order NLO responses. The electronic structure analysis shows that the [Pt–Pt(H2P(CH2)PH2)2] fragment displays strong electron-withdrawing character in these systems. Meanwhile, the third-order NLO response of Pt–Pt bond also has been estimated by using TDDFT–SOS method. An enhancement of third-order NLO response has been observed because of the introduction of the Pt–Pt bond. This is mainly due to the intense and low-lying metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) and intraligand (IL) CT transitions.

Abstract
By modifying a synthetic procedure, two new hyperbranched polytriazoles (HP1 and HP2) containing isolation chromophores were synthesized successfully through click chemistry reactions under copper(I) catalysis. For the first time, these two polymers were derived from an AB(4)-type monomer, although they contain different end-capping chromophores. They are soluble in normal polar organic solvents and are well characterized. Thanks to the presence of the isolation chromophore, the two polymers demonstrate good nonlinear optical (NLO) properties and optical transparency, making them promising candidates for practical applications.

Abstract
We report a route to noncovalently latch dipolar molecules on graphene to create stable chromophore/graphene hybrids where molecular transformation can be used as an additional handle to reversibly modulate doping while retaining high mobilities. A light switchable azobenzene chromophore was tethered to the surface of graphene via π-π interactions, leading to p-doping of graphene with an hole concentration of ~5 × 10(12) cm(-2). As the molecules switch reversibly from trans to cis form the dipole moment changes, and hence the extent of doping, resulting in the modulation of hole concentration up to ~18% by alternative illumination of UV and white light. Light-driven conductance modulation and control experiments under vacuum clearly attribute the doping modulation to molecular transformations in the organic molecules. With improved sensitivities these "light-gated" transistors open up new ways to enable optical interconnects.

Abstract
DFT B3LYP method was employed to calculate the second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) responses of the derivatives of disubstituted seven-vertex cobaltacarborane metallocenyl. The results show that cobaltacarborane metallocenyl plays a pushing/pulling role and a bridge role to transfer electron in these molecules. The five-membered ring of cyclopentadiene is more beneficial to increase second-order NLO response than the five-membered ring composed of two C atoms and three B atoms in cobaltacarborane. Moreover, the second-order NLO response is more powerful when one substituent containing electron donor group and one substituent containing electron acceptor group are located at meta position. Accordingly, among the nine models, model c2 is the optimum model with largest value of βtot. The calculation results also show that cobaltacarborane metallocenyl and ferrocene parts play the same roles to increase second-order NLO response. Thus, cobaltacarborane metallocenyl can be a promising second-order NLO material.

Abstract
We have studied the structures and absorption spectra of merocyanine, the photoresponsive isomer of the spiropyran (SP)-merocyanine (MC) pair, in chloroform and in water solvents using a combined hybrid QM/MM Car-Parrinello molecular dynamics (CP-QM/MM) and ZINDO approach. We report remarkable differences in the molecular structure and charge distribution of MC between the two solvents; the molecular structure of MC remains in neutral form in chloroform while it becomes charge-separated, zwitterionic, in water. The dipole moment of MC in water is about 50% larger than in chloroform, while the value for SP in water is in between, suggesting that the solvent is more influential than the conformation itself in deciding the dipole moment for the merocyanine-spiropyran pair. The calculations could reproduce the experimentally reported blue shift in the absorption spectra of MC when going from the nonpolar to the polar solvent, though the actual value of the absorption maximum is overestimated in chloroform solvent. We find that the CP-QM/MM approach is appropriate for structure modeling of solvatochromic and thermochromic molecules as this approach is able to capture the solvent and thermal-induced structural changes within the solute important for an accurate assessment of the properties.

Abstract
In this Letter we demonstrate broadband electro-optic modulation with frequencies of up to 40 GHz in slotted photonic crystal waveguides based on silicon-on-insulator substrates covered and infiltrated with a nonlinear optical polymer. Two-dimensional photonic crystal waveguides in silicon enable integrated optical devices with an extremely small geometric footprint on the scale of micrometers. The slotted waveguide design optimizes the overlap of the optical and electric fields in the second-order nonlinear optical medium and, hence, the interaction of the optical and electric waves.

Abstract
We demonstrate a near-infrared electro-optic modulator with a bandwidth of 3 GHz and a V(pi)L figure of merit of 0.8 V-cm using a push-pull configuration. This is the highest operating speed achieved in a silicon-polymer hybrid system to date by several orders of magnitude. The modulator was fabricated from a silicon strip-loaded slot waveguide and clad in a nonlinear polymer. In this geometry, the electrodes form parts of the waveguide, and the modulator driving voltage drops across a 200 nm slot.

Abstract
Surface energy modification was utilized in the fabrication of hollow transmission Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI) for the first time. Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) was used to modify the surface energy of substrate for the self-assembly of poly(vinylidenefluoride-trifluoroethylene) [P(VDF-TrFE)] 70/30 mol% copolymer film on given areas, which is simple and low destructive for the photoelectric device. A strain of 7.12% under a field of 22.3 MV/m was observed from the copolymer film, which led to the FPI with a tunable range of 54 nm at wavelength of 604 nm.

Abstract
Ubiquitous radar systems look everywhere at all times and require both parallel radar processors and parallel beamformers. Current systems operate with subgigahertz bandwidths and produce a handful of angle-of-arrival (AOA) beams. We present an electro-optic radar processor that combines the multigigahertz wideband capabilities of a spectral hole burning correlator with wideband Doppler processing and the thousands of parallel channels available from an electro-optical beamformer. Preliminary experiments demonstrate 150 MHz bandwidth range correlations across 20 AOA beams.

Abstract
Efficiently organizing molecular nonlinear optical (NLO) chromophores having large first-order hyperpolarizabilities (beta) into acentric microstructures for electro-optic (EO) applications represents a significant materials synthesis and processing challenge, in part due to interchromophore dipolar interactions that promote centrosymmetric organization. Here we report the computational modeling, synthesis, and characterization of a series of eight heteroaromatic organic chromophores, designed to self-organize from the vapor phase via directed hydrogen-bond networks, into acentric thin films. Introduction of alpha,omega-donor-acceptor hydrogen-bonding substituents along the molecular long axes tunes properties such as hyperpolarizability, volatility, thermal stability, film-forming properties, and macroscopic NLO response (chi((2))). DFT-level molecular modeling, INDO/S optical property analysis, and sum-overstates computation indicate that molecular-core fluorination and hydrogen-bond donor incorporation can increase beta(vec) up to 40x versus that of typical fluorine-free chromophores. Furthermore, inclusion of sterically induced biphenyl conjugative decoupling between chromophore pi-donor substituents and the hydrogen-bonding donor sites increases beta by approximately 50%. Experimental thin-film second harmonic generation (SHG) spectroscopy confirms these trends in calculated responses, with chi((2)) increasing 7.5x upon chromophore core fluorination and 15x with hydrogen-bonding donor substitution, thereby achieving macroscopic responses as high as 302 pm/V at omega(o) = 1064 nm. In addition to response trends, cluster calculations also reveal linear additivity in beta(vec) with catenation for all benzoic acid-containing chromophores up to longitudinally aligned trimers. Linear scaling of SHG response with film thickness is observed for benzoic acid-containing chromophores up to 1.0 microm film thickness.
