Abstract
To get high yield of ethanol-soluble proteins (EP) and the antioxidant peptides from Sphyrna lewini muscle, orthogonal experiments (L(9)(3)(4)) were applied to optimize the best extraction conditions and enzyme hydrolysis conditions. The yield of EP reached 5.903±0.053% under the optimum conditions of ethanol concentration 90%, solvent to material ratio 20:1, extraction temperature of 40°C and extraction time of 80min. The antioxidant SEPH (EP hydrolysate of S. lewini muscle) was prepared by using papain under the optimum conditions of enzymolysis time 2h, total enzyme dose 1.2%, enzymolysis temperature 50°C and pH 6, and its DPPH radical scavenging activity reached 21.76±0.42% at the concentration of 10mg/ml. Two peptides (F42-3 and F42-5) were isolated from SEPH by using ultrafiltration, anion-exchange chromatography, gel filtration chromatography and RP-HPLC. The structures of F42-3 and F42-5 were identified as Trp-Asp-Arg and Pro-Tyr-Phe-Asn-Lys with molecular weights of 475.50Da and 667.77Da, respectively. F42-3 and F42-5 exhibited good scavenging activity on hydroxyl radical (EC(50) 0.15mg/ml and 0.24mg/ml), ABTS radical (EC(50) 0.34mg/ml and 0.12mg/ml), and superoxide anion radical (EC(50) 0.09mg/ml and 0.11mg/ml), but moderate DPPH radical (EC(50) 3.63mg/ml and 4.11mg/ml). F42-3 and F42-5 were also effectively against lipid peroxidation in the model system and peroxyl free radical scavenging in β-carotene linoleic acid assay. Their high activities were due to the smaller size and the presence of antioxidative amino acids within the peptide sequences.

Abstract
Fruit wastes are one of the main sources of municipal waste. In order to explore the potential of fruit wastes as natural resources of bioactive compounds, the antioxidant potency and total phenolic contents (TPC) of lipophilic and hydrophilic components in wastes (peel and seed) of 50 fruits were systematically evaluated. The results showed that different fruit residues had diverse antioxidant potency and the variation was very large. Furthermore, the main bioactive compounds were identified and quantified, and catechin, cyanidin 3-glucoside, epicatechin, galangin, gallic acid, homogentisic acid, kaempferol, and chlorogenic acid were widely found in these residues. Especially, the values of ferric-reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC) and TPC in the residues were higher than in pulps. The results showed that fruit residues could be inexpensive and readily available resources of bioactive compounds for use in the food and pharmaceutical industries.

Abstract
Dried residues from four different vegetables, viz. pea pod (pp), cauliflower waste (CW), potato peel (PP) and tomato peel (TP) were extracted using four solvents i.e., hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate and methanol. Among the four solvents, methanolic extracts showed the highest total phenolic content (TPC) for all the four vegetable residues. Methanolic extracts were evaluated for antioxidant activities using diphenylpicryl-hydrazyl (DPPH) and reducing power assay. Tomato peel extract showed highest phenolic content of 21.0 mg GAE/g-dw and 80.8 % DPPH free radical scavenging ability, whereas potato peel extract had a low phenolic content, and it also showed the least antioxidant activity among the residues examined in this study. Total phenolic content and DPPH free radical scavenging activity in pea pods and cauliflower waste were 13.6 mg GAE/g-dw and 72 % and 9.2 mg GAE/g-dw and 70.7 %, respectively. The coefficient of determination (r(2)) for correlation between TPC and reducing power, DPPH and TPC, DPPH and reducing power for all extracts was 0.85, 0.91and 0.87, respectively, suggesting an important role of phenolics in imparting antioxidant ability. Extracts from vegetables residues therefore represent a significant source of phenolic antioxidants for use as nutraceuticals or biopreservatives.

Abstract
Phenolic compounds from mashua tuber were evaluated as potential antioxidants to retard the oxidation of crude soybean oil submitted to accelerated storage and frying. During the accelerated storage, an ethanolic crude extract, a purified extract, an aqueous fraction and an ethyl acetate fraction from mashua containing different gallic acid equivalent concentrations (100, 300 and 600 ppm) in oil were evaluated at 55 °C. After 15 days of storage, better effects were evidenced against soybean oil oxidation at 300 and 600 ppm of ethyl acetate fraction in comparison to 200 ppm butylated hydroxytoluene and the control (no antioxidant added). During the frying process at ∼180 °C, principal component analysis revealed that the content of trienes and dienes were strongly correlated with the frying batch. Ethyl acetate fraction at 200 ppm showed the highest efficacy against oil oxidation in terms of polar compound values, free fatty acids and conjugated dienes and trienes in comparison to the oil containing 200 ppm tert-butylhydroquinone and control. Differential scanning calorimetry corroborated the efficacy of ethyl acetate fraction phenolic and it is strongly recommended as method for validation of results. This study provides strong evidence related to the excellent protective effects against soybean oil oxidation of mashua phenolics. This crop could be utilized as an alternative source of natural antioxidants by the oil industry.

Abstract
In addition to nine known bromophenol derivatives, five new nitrogen-containing bromophenols were isolated from an ethyl acetate extract of the marine red alga Rhodomela confervoides. By using spectroscopic methods, the structures of the new compounds were identified as 3-(2,3-dibromo-4,5-dihydroxybenzyl)pyrrolidine-2,5-dione (1), methyl 4-(2,3-dibromo-4,5-dihydroxybenzylamino)-4-oxobutanoate (2), 4-(2,3-dibromo-4,5-dihydroxybenzylamino)-4-oxobutanoic acid (3), 3-bromo-5-hydroxy-4-methoxybenzamide (4), and 2-(3-bromo-5-hydroxy-4-methoxyphenyl)acetamide (5). All of these bromophenols showed potent scavenging activity against DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) radicals, with IC(50) values ranging from 5.22 to 23.60μM. These compounds also displayed moderate activity against ABTS (2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonate) radicals, with Trolox Equivalent Antioxidant Capacity values (TEAC) ranging from 2.11 to 3.58mM. The results obtained in this study demonstrate that the bromophenols obtained from R. confervoides may have potential application in food and/or pharmaceutical fields as natural antioxidants.

Abstract
Curcumin (Ccm) and ascorbyl dipalmitate (ADP) nanoparticles (NPs) with average sizes of ∼50 and ∼80 nm, respectively, were successfully produced by rapid expansion of subcritical solutions into liquid solvents (RESOLV). Pluronic F127 was employed as a stabilizer for both Ccm- and ADP-NPs in an aqueous receiving solution. Antioxidant activities of the Ccm-NPs and ADP-NPs were subsequently investigated using four assays, including 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging, ABTS radical cation decolorization, β-carotene bleaching, and ferric reducing antioxidant power. Ccm-NPs and ADP-NPs showed higher antioxidant activities than those of Ccm and ADP. Ccm-NPs yielded higher antioxidant activities than those of Ccm in ethanol and water (Ccm-EtOH and Ccm-H(2)O), respectively. ADP-NPs yielded lower antioxidant activities than that of ADP in ethanol (ADP-EtOH) but higher activities than that of ADP in water (ADP-H(2)O). Moreover, incorporation of Ccm-NPs and ADP-NPs into cellulose-based films indicated that Ccm-NPs and ADP-NPs significantly enhanced the antioxidant activities of Ccm and ADP (p < 0.05). Our results show that the environmentally benign supercritical CO(2) technique should be generally applicable to NP fabrication of other important bioactive ingredients, especially in liquid form. In addition, we suggest that Ccm-NPs and ADP-NPs can be used to reduce the dosage of Ccm and ADP and improve their bioavailability, and thus merit further investigation for antioxidant packaging film and coating applications.

Abstract
This study was aimed at investigating the antimelanogenic and antioxidative properties of the essential oil extracted from leaves of V. negundo Linn and the analysis of the chemical composition of this essential oil. The efficacy of the essential oil was evaluated spectrophotometrically, whereas the volatile chemical compounds in the essential oil were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The results revealed that the essential oil effectively suppresses murine B16F10 tyrosinase activity and decreases the amount of melanin in a dose-dependent manner. Additionally, the essential oil significantly scavenged 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) (ABTS) radicals, and showed potent reducing power versus metal-ion chelating properties in a dose-dependent pattern. The chemical constituents in the essential oil are sesquiterpenes (44.41%), monoterpenes (19.25%), esters (14.77%), alcohols (8.53%), aromatic compound (5.90%), ketone (4.96%), ethers (0.4%) that together account for 98.22% of its chemical composition. It is predicted that the aromatic compound in the essential oil may contribute to its antioxidant activities. The results indicated that essential oil extracted from V. negundo Linn leaves decreased melanin production in B16F10 melanoma cells and showed potent antioxidant activities. The essential oil can thereby serve as an inhibitor of melanin synthesis and could also act as a natural antioxidant.

Abstract
UNLABELLED A spectrofluorimetric method is presented for the determination of 2 synthetic phenolic antioxidants (SPAs), butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA), and propyl gallate (PG) in foodstuffs. The proposed method is based on the derivatization of SPAs with 4-chloro-7-nitrobenzofurazan (NBD-Cl) in phosphate buffer of pH 9.0 to yield a highly fluorescent brown product. The optimum experimental conditions have been studied carefully. Linear calibration curves were obtained over the concentration range of 0.20 to 40 μg mL⁻¹ for BHA, and 0.80 to 50 μg mL⁻¹ for PG, using NBD-Cl reagent. The detection limits were 18 ng mL⁻¹ for BHA, 55 ng mL⁻¹ for PG. Intra-day and inter-day relative standard deviations at 3 different concentrations were determined. The high recovery values indicate the accuracy of the proposed methods, and low relative standard deviation values indicate good precision. The results presented in this report show that the applied spectrofluorimetric method is acceptable for the determination of the 2 SPAs in the foodstuffs. Other SPAs, tertiary butyl hydroquinone and butylated hydroxytoluene in foodstuffs do not interfere with the proposed method. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS In this spectrofluorimetric method, NBD-Cl as a derivation agent is used to detect synthetic phenolic antioxidants. The method specificity has been greatly improved; there was no interference from other commonly used phenolic substances.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Antioxidant efficacy of 70% ethanol extract (EE), 70% methanol extract (ME), and water extract (WE) produced from pickled and dried mustard (Brassica juncea Coss. var. foliosa Bailey) was evaluated in rapeseed and peanut oils by using the Schaal oven method. The protective effects of aforesaid 3 extracts in stabilizing vegetable oils were tested by measuring their peroxide values, conjugated diene values, and p-anisidine values during storage of 15 d at 60 °C. Results showed that the different solvent extracts produced from pickled and dried mustard, at concentrations of 0.5% and 1.0% (w/w) in vegetable oils, could significantly (P < 0.05) lower the peroxide value, conjugated diene value, and p-anisidine value of oils during storage at 60 °C. However, the extracts at various concentrations showed a less antioxidant effect than butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) at 200 ppm. The ultraviolet spectra of different extracts exhibited a single maximum absorbance at 268 nm. The qualitative analysis of antioxidants present in the extracts was carried out by reverse phase high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) using a C18 column. Two phenolic compounds, gallic and protocatechuric acids, were identified. The antioxidant activity of the extracts might be attributed to the presence of these phenolics. These results indicated that the pickled and dried mustard could be used as a potential source of natural antioxidants. PRACTICAL APPLICATION The antioxidant activity of extracts produced from pickled and dried mustard toward rapeseed and peanut oils oxidation and the characterization of active phenolic compounds may be useful in developing natural antioxidants for vegetable oils. Moreover, the extracts could safely be used as potential antioxidant to suppress lipid oxidation in lipid-containing food products.

Abstract
Since many years, numerous kinds of processes based on enzymatic hydrolysis at various pH, involving added plant or bacterial enzymes after inactivation by heating of endogenous enzymes present in the raw material or, alternatively, based on the action of endogenous enzymes, have contributed to the degradation of marine by-product proteins in order to produce fractions exerting biological activities. Peptides obtained by enzymatic hydrolysis of fish proteins exhibit not only nutritional but also biological properties of dietary uses, or even therapeutic potential. In this review, we have focused on the different enzymatic processes able to generate bioactive peptides from marine by-products and exerting high potential in nutraceutical applications to fight against important public health issues like obesity, stress, hypertension, and migraine. Beyond the nutraceutical and pharmaceutical aspects, this way of valorization is also included in the necessary development of by-product fishing industries for economic and ecological reasons in the worldwide context of marine resources depletion.

Abstract
The antioxidant potential of Actinidia macrosperma C. F. Liang (Actinidiaceae) was investigated in vitro for total phenolic content, along with total antioxidant activity (TAA), 1,1-diphenyl 2-picryl hydrazyl (DPPH), and lipid peroxidation (LP). The results indicated that different polarity extracts of A. macrosperma exhibit different biological activities, which depends mainly on the presence of phenolic compounds. The antioxidant activity was in the following decreasing order: MeOH extract > EtOAc extract > aqueous extract > CHCl3 extract > Hexane extract. Moreover, the cytotoxic activity of this plant by MTT dye assay using SMMC-7721 has been determined also. The hexane, EtOAc, and CHCl3 extracts showed cytotoxicity in a dose-dependent manner. Methanol and aqueous extracts, however, showed weak activities in this test. And a very significant cytotoxic activity, not significantly different from the positive control of quercetin, was observed in CHCl3 extract.

Abstract
Antioxidative activities and biochemical properties of protein hydrolysates prepared from cuttlefish (Sepia officinalis) using Alcalase 2.4 L and Bacillus licheniformis NH1 proteases with different degrees of hydrolysis (DH) were determined. For the biochemical properties, hydrolysis by both enzymes increased protein solubility to above 75% over a wide pH range. The antioxidant activities of cuttlefish protein hydrolysates (CPHs) increase with increasing DH. In addition, all CPHs exhibited antioxidative activity in a concentration-dependent manner. NH1-CPHs generally showed greater antioxidative activity than Alcalase protein hydrolysates (P < 0.05) as indicated by the higher 1,1-diphenyl-1-picryhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity and ferrous chelating activity. Both Alcalase and NH1 protein hydrolysates were able to retard lipid peroxidation and β-carotene-linoleic acid oxidation. Alcalase-CPH (DH = 12.5%) and NH1-CPH (DH = 15%) contained 75.36% and 80.11% protein, respectively, with histidine and arginine as the major amino acids, followed by glutamic acid/glutamine, serine, lysine, and leucine. In addition, CPHs have a high percentage of essential amino acids made up 48.85% and 50.04%. Cuttlefish muscle protein hydrolysates had a high nutritional value and could be used as supplement to poorly balanced dietary proteins.

Abstract
Mastoparan-B is a peptide toxin isolated from the venom of Vespa basalis, the most dangerous hornet found in Taiwan. This study is aimed to evaluate the antioxidative activities of several amino acid substitutions on MP-B, and examined the influences of mast cell degranulation and hemolytic activities in parallel with antioxidative activities. The correlations between the biological function and amino acid sequence were assessed. Our study shows original MP-B is a valuable antioxidant at low concentration in competing with nitric-oxide for oxygen molecules and possesses good antioxidative enzyme activities resembled to superoxidase dismutase and glutathione peroxidase. And there are no predominant rates of mast cell degranulation and hemolytic effects in such condition. With proper substitutions, the reducing power, DPPH scavenging activity and glutathione reductase-like enzyme activity of MP-B can increase clearly. The results demonstrate that MP-B analogs are very potential to be applicable antioxidants for other antioxidative usages.

Abstract
BACKGROUND It has been evidenced in several epidemiological studies that seaweeds when consumed as diet protect against several chronic oxidative stress-related diseases. Seaweeds, raw, cooked, or dried, are used as food in many cultures, although not very popularly in India. Globally, several studies have indicated that seaweeds are a rich source of phenolic compounds and have antioxidant properties. In the present study, we screened methanolic extracts (MEs) of five species of green seaweeds commonly found in India for their cytotoxic activity by brine shrimp lethality assay and antioxidant properties using various in vitro assays, including 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging, reducing power and metal ion chelating assays. RESULTS A markedly variable, dose-dependent activity was observed in all the seaweed extracts relative to their total phenolic content. Statistical analysis indicated a significantly strong correlation between the DPPH radical scavenging activity and total phenolic content (R(2) = 0.88, P < 0.05) as well as reducing power and total phenolic content (R(2) = 0.99, P < 0.01) of the dry MEs. Also, a very poor correlation between total phenolic content and metal chelating activity (R(2) = 0.13, P > 0.05) was noted. None of the seaweed extracts were potently cytotoxic. CONCLUSION The underlying results endorse seaweeds as a rich, novel source of antioxidant compounds needing systemic exploration.

Abstract
A total of 19 naturally occurring bromophenols, with six new and 13 known structures, were isolated and identified from the methanolic extract of the marine red alga Rhodomela confervoides. The new compounds were identified by spectroscopic methods as 3,4-dibromo-5-((methylsulfonyl)methyl)benzene-1,2-diol (1), 3,4-dibromo-5-((2,3-dihydroxypropoxy)methyl)benzene-1,2-diol (2), 5-(aminomethyl)-3,4-dibromobenzene-1,2-diol (3), 2-(2,3-dibromo-4,5-dihydroxyphenyl)acetic acid (4), 2-methoxy-3-bromo-5-hydroxymethylphenol (5), and (E)-4-(2-bromo-4,5-dihydroxyphenyl)but-3-en-2-one (6). Each compound was evaluated for free radical scavenging activity against DPPH (α,α-diphenyl-β-dipicrylhydrazyl) and ABTS [2,2'-azinobis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid)diammonium salt] radicals. Most of them exhibited potent activities stronger than or comparable to the positive controls butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) and ascorbic acid. The results from this study suggest that R. confervoides is an excellent source of natural antioxidants, and inclusion of these antioxidant-rich algal components would likely help prevent the oxidative deterioration of food.

Abstract
Centaurea species are used for the treatment of various ailments in the popular medicine in some countries. This study was designed to examine antioxidant potentials and fatty acid profiles of five Centaurea species from Turkey flora. Antioxidant properties of methanolic extracts from these species were evaluated by six different methods: phosphomolybdenum assay, free radical scavenging assay, β-carotene/linoleic acid test system, metal chelating activity, ferric and cupric reducing power. Total phenolic and flavonoid concentrations of each extract were also determined using the Folin-Ciocalteu reagent and aluminum chloride. The results of these assay showed a significant antioxidant capacity in all researched extracts. Centaurea cheirolopha extract, with the highest amount of total phenolic and flavonoids, showed the highest antioxidant activities in all assay, except for metal chelating. Fatty acid profiles of these species were examined by GC-FID and 30 fatty acids were identified. Palmitic, linoleic, oleic, and linolenic acid were detected as the main components. The results of the study indicated that the Centaurea species can be considered as a source of new natural antioxidants and unsaturated fatty acids for food, cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries.

Abstract
Functional properties and antioxidant activity of pink perch (Nemipterus japonicus) muscle hydrolysed by three different enzymes papain, pepsin and trypsin were studied. The protein hydrolysates produced by trypsin had an excellent solubility (98%) compared to pepsin (77%) and papain hydrolysate (74%). Conversely, the emulsifying activity index (ESI) and foaming abilities were affected by pH. DPPH radical scavenging ability, reducing power and metal chelating activity of protein hydrolysates increased with increase in concentration. Lipid peroxidation was strongly inhibited by 64% by protein hydrolysates produced by trypsin. The results revealed that the functional properties and antioxidant activities of pink perch were greatly affected by the enzymes used.

Abstract
The objective of the study was to compare the antioxidant activity of two distinct hydrolysates and their peptide fractions prepared by ultrafiltration (UF) using membranes with molecular weight cut-off of 5 and 1 kDa. The hydrolysates were a delipidated egg yolk protein concentrate (EYP) intensively hydrolyzed with a combination of two bacterial proteases, and a phosphoproteins (PPP) extract partially hydrolyzed with trypsin. Antioxidant activity, as determined by the oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) assay, was low for EYP and PPP hydrolysates with values of 613.1 and 489.2 μM TE·g−1 protein, respectively. UF-fractionation of EYP hydrolysate increased slightly the antioxidant activity in permeate fractions (720.5–867.8 μM TE·g−1 protein). However, ORAC values were increased by more than 3-fold in UF-fractions prepared from PPP hydrolysate, which were enriched in peptides with molecular weight lower than 5 kDa. These UF-fractions were characterized by their lower N/P atomic ratio and higher phosphorus content compared to the same UF-fractions obtained from EYP-TH. They also contained high amounts of His, Met, Leu, and Phe, which are recognized as antioxidant amino acids, but also high content in Lys and Arg which both represent target amino acids of trypsin used for the hydrolysis of PPP.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to determine antioxidant and cytotoxic efficacies of methanolic and aqueous extracts of Rheum emodi Wall. ex Meissn. rhizome. 2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and hydroxyl radical scavenging activities, inhibitory effect on lipid peroxidation and Fe3+ reducing antioxidant property have been used to investigate antioxidant properties of the extracts. Cytotoxicity of the extracts was tested on MDA-MB-435S and Hep3B cell lines. Both extracts displayed extensive cytotoxicity to the tested cell lines. The extracts were studied for their ability to protect pBR322 DNA from damage by UV induced photolysis of H2O2. The aqueous extract, though inferior to methanolic extract in its antioxidant potential exhibited efficiency in DNA protection, while the methanolic extract failed to protect the DNA. The amount of total polyphenolics in the extracts was measured by spectrophotometric method. The methanolic extract contained higher polyphenolic contents than aqueous extract. Significant positive correlations were observed (P < .05) between results of phenolic content estimation and that of antioxidant assays. Hence, high-performance liquid chromatography analysis was performed to identify few major phenolic compounds that might be responsible for these therapeutic properties. These results indicate that rhizome of R. emodi possesses antioxidant and cytotoxic activities and therefore have therapeutic potential.

Abstract
The antioxidant activity of the culture supernatant of Serratia ureilytica TKU013 with squid pen as the sole carbon/nitrogen source was assessed by three methods, and the phenolic contents were assayed. The supernatant with the highest antioxidant activity was further purified by liquid-liquid partition, revealing the ethyl acetate extract exhibited the strongest antioxidant activity and the highest total phenolic content. Eight fractions were retrieved from silica gel column chromatography of this extract, designated F1-F8. F4 was found to possess the strong antioxidative activity and the highest total phenolic content and also exhibited strong cytotoxic activities against two different tumoural cell lines. A new compound (Serranticin) with antioxidant and antitumor activity was obtained from F4. The structure of Serranticin is analogous to that of siderophores (hexacoordinated catecholamine), which are iron chelators. As such, Serranticin has the potential for use as a deferration agent in various iron overload diseases.

Abstract
In this work, in vitro antioxidant activity of two Brazilian red seaweeds, Gracilaria birdiae and Gracilaria cornea, was characterized. The total phenolic content, the radical-scavenging activity and the antioxidant activity were determined in two solvent extracts of the algae. Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) allowed identification of important antioxidant compounds. The ethanol extract of G. birdiae was found to have the highest value of total phenolic content: 1.13 mg of gallic acid equiv (GAE)/g of extract. The radical-scavenging activity of G. birdiae and G. cornea extracts has been evaluated at different extract concentrations; the IC(50) values of ethanolic extracts of G. cornea and G. birdiae were 0.77 and 0.76 mg mL(-1), respectively, while for methanolic extracts, the IC(50) values of G. cornea and G. birdiae were 0.86 and 0.76 mg mL(-1), respectively. The antioxidant activities of these two seaweeds' extracts as assessed by the β-carotene-linoleic acid assay were equally high, achieving values of β-carotene oxidation inhibition of up to 40%. Finally, in the methanolic extracts, LC-MS/MS allowed identification in both algae of two important antioxidants: apigenin and gallic acid.

Abstract
Methanolic extracts (MEs) of seven brown seaweeds occurring in the Indian coastal waters were screened for their cytotoxic and antioxidant properties following various assays. The methanolic extracts of seaweeds in the order of Dictyopteris australis > Spatoglossum variabile > Stoechospermum marginatum > Spatoglossum aspermum showed significant cytotoxic activity. A very high DPPH radical scavenging activity was exhibited by the methanolic extracts prepared from St. marginatum, Padina tetrastromatica, Dictyopteris delicatula and S. aspermum. The total phenolic content of the MEs varied from 13.19 ± 0.32 to 25.29 ± 0.445 gallic acid equivalents (mg g−1 of methanolic extract). The reducing power assay indicated a dose dependency, at concentrations of 0.1, 0.5 and 1.0 and 2.0 mg mL−1 of MEs and decreased in the following order: Butylated hydroxy toluene > P. tetrastromatica > D. delicatula > S. aspermum > S. variabile > S. marginatum > D. australis > S. marginatum. Furthermore, D. australis, S. aspermum, S. variabile and S. marginatum demonstrated good metal ion chelating properties. All the above evidences suggest that, the antioxidant compounds found in brown seaweeds scavenge free radicals through effective intervention. This decisively promotes them as a potential source of natural antioxidants.

Abstract
The present study aims to test two different doses of aqueous extract of black maca on learning and memory in ovariectomized (OVX) mice and their relation with malonalehyde (MDA), acetylcholinesterase (Ache) and monoamine oxidase (MAO) brain levels. Female mice were divided into five groups: (i) naive (control), (ii) sham, (iii) OVX mice and OVX mice treated with (iv) 0.50 g kg−1 and (v) 2.00 g kg−1 black maca. Mice were orally treated with distilled water or black maca during 35 days starting 7 days after surgery. Memory and learning were assessed using the water Morris maze (from day 23–27) and the step-down avoidance test (days 34 and 35). At the end of each treatment, mice were sacrificed by decapitation and brains were dissected out for MDA, Ache and MAO determinations. Black maca (0.5 and 2.0 g/kg) increased step-down latency when compared to OVX control mice. Black maca decreased MDA and Ache levels in OVX mice; whereas, no differences were observed in MAO levels. Finally, black maca improved experimental memory impairment induced by ovariectomy, due in part, by its antioxidant and Ache inhibitory activities.
