Reversible Surface Patterning by Dynamic Crosslink Gradients: Controlling Buckling in 2D

Photochemical Design for Diverse Controllable Patterns in Self-Wrinkling Films

Harnessing the spontaneous surface instability of pliable substances to create intricate, well-ordered, and on-demand controlled surface patterns holds great potential for advancing applications in optical, electrical, and biological processes. However, the current limitations stem from challenges in modulating multidirectional stress fields and diverse boundary environments. Herein, this work proposes a universal strategy to achieve arbitrarily controllable wrinkle patterns via the spatiotemporal photochemical boundaries. Utilizing constraints and inductive effects of the photochemical boundaries, the multiple coupling relationship is accomplished among the light fields, stress fields, and morphology of wrinkles in photosensitive polyurethane (PSPU) film. Moreover, employing sequential light-irradiation with photomask enables the attainment of a diverse array of controllable patterns, ranging from highly ordered 2D patterns to periodic or intricate designs. The fundamental mechanics of underlying buckling and the formation of surface features are comprehensively elucidated through theoretical stimulation and finite element analysis. The results reveal the evolution laws of wrinkles under photochemical boundaries and represent a new effective toolkit for fabricating intricate and captivating patterns in single-layer films.

Deformation-Induced Photoprogrammable Pattern of Polyurethane Elastomers Based on Poisson Effect

Elastomers with high aspect ratio surface patterns are a promising class of materials for designing soft machines in the future. Here, a facile method for fabricating surface patterns on polyurethane elastomer by subtly utilizing the Poisson effect and gradient photocrosslinking is demonstrated. By applying uniaxial tensile strains, the aspect ratio of the surface patterns can be optionally manipulated. At prestretched state, the pattern on the polyurethane elastomer can be readily constructed through compressive stress, resulting from the gradient photocrosslinking via selective photodimerization of an anthracene-functionalized polyurethane elastomer (referred to as ANPU). The macromolecular aggregation structures during stretching deformation significantly contribute to the fabrication of high aspect ratio surface patterns. The insightful finite element analysis well demonstrates that the magnitude and distribution of internal stress in the ANPU elastomer can be regulated by selectively gradient crosslinking, leading to polymer chains migrate from the exposed region to the unexposed region, thereby generating a diverse array of surface patterns. Additionally, the periodic surface patterns exhibit tunable structural color according to the different stretching states and are fully reversible over multiple cycles, opening up avenues for diverse applications such as smart displays, stretchable strain sensors, and anticounterfeiting devices.

Cardiac-Adaptive Conductive Hydrogel Patch Enabling Construction of Mechanical-Electrical Anisotropic Microenvironment for Heart Repair

The biomimetic construction of a microstructural-mechanical-electrical anisotropic microenvironment adaptive to the native cardiac tissue is essential to repair myocardial infarction (MI). Inspired by the 3D anisotropic characteristic of the natural fish swim bladder (FSB), a novel flexible, anisotropic, and conductive hydrogel was developed for tissue-specific adaptation to the anisotropic structural, conductive, and mechanical features of the native cardiac extracellular matrix. The results revealed that the originally stiff, homogeneous FSB film was tailored to a highly flexible anisotropic hydrogel, enabling its potential as a functional engineered cardiac patch (ECP). In vitro and in vivo experiments demonstrated the enhanced electrophysiological activity, maturation, elongation, and orientation of cardiomyocytes (CMs), and marked MI repair performance with reduced CM apoptosis and myocardial fibrosis, thereby promoting cell retention, myogenesis, and vascularization, as well as improving electrical integration. Our findings offer a potential strategy for functional ECP and provides a novel strategy to bionically simulate the complex cardiac repair environment.

Electrochemical Oxidation to Fabricate Micro-Nano-Scale Surface Wrinkling of Liquid Metals

Constructing wrinkled structures on the surface of materials to obtain new functions has broad application prospects. Here a generalized method is reported to fabricate multi-scale and diverse-dimensional oxide wrinkles on liquid metal surfaces by an electrochemical anodization method. The oxide film on the surface of the liquid metal is successfully thickened to hundreds of nanometers by electrochemical anodization, and then the micro-wrinkles with height differences of several hundred nanometers are obtained by the growth stress. It is succeeded in altering the distribution of growth stress by changing the substrate geometry to induce different wrinkle morphologies, such as one-dimensional striped wrinkles and two-dimensional labyrinth wrinkles. Further, radial wrinkles are obtained under the hoop stress induced by the difference in surface tensions. These hierarchical wrinkles of different scales can exist on the liquid metal surface simultaneously. Surface wrinkles of liquid metal may have potential applications in the future for flexible electronics, sensors, displays, and so on.

Reversible adhesives with controlled wrinkling patterns for programmable integration and discharging

Switchable and minimally invasive tissue adhesives have great potential for medical applications. However, on-demand adherence to and detachment from tissue surfaces remain difficult. We fabricated a switchable hydrogel film adhesive by designing pattern-tunable wrinkles to control adhesion. When adhered to a substrate, the compressive stress generated from the bilayer system leads to self-similar wrinkling patterns at short and long wavelengths, regulating the interfacial adhesion. To verify the concept and explore its application, we established a random skin flap model, which is a crucial strategy for repairing severe or large-scale wounds. Our hydrogel adhesive provides sufficient adhesion for tissue sealing and promotes neovascularization at the first stage, and then gradually detaches from the tissue while a dynamic wrinkling pattern transition happens. The gel film can be progressively ejected out from the side margins after host-guest integration. Our findings provide insights into tunable bioadhesion by manipulating the wrinkling pattern transition.

Biomimetic natural biomaterials for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine: new biosynthesis methods, recent advances, and emerging applications

Biomimetic materials have emerged as attractive and competitive alternatives for tissue engineering (TE) and regenerative medicine. In contrast to conventional biomaterials or synthetic materials, biomimetic scaffolds based on natural biomaterial can offer cells a broad spectrum of biochemical and biophysical cues that mimic the in vivo extracellular matrix (ECM). Additionally, such materials have mechanical adaptability, microstructure interconnectivity, and inherent bioactivity, making them ideal for the design of living implants for specific applications in TE and regenerative medicine. This paper provides an overview for recent progress of biomimetic natural biomaterials (BNBMs), including advances in their preparation, functionality, potential applications and future challenges. We highlight recent advances in the fabrication of BNBMs and outline general strategies for functionalizing and tailoring the BNBMs with various biological and physicochemical characteristics of native ECM. Moreover, we offer an overview of recent key advances in the functionalization and applications of versatile BNBMs for TE applications. Finally, we conclude by offering our perspective on open challenges and future developments in this rapidly-evolving field.

Highly Stretchable and Biocompatible Wrinkled Nanoclay-Composite Hydrogel With Enhanced Sensing Capability for Precise Detection of Myocardial Infarction

It is challenging to balance high biocompability with good mechanical-electrical sensing performance, especially when triggering inflammatory stress response after in vivo implantation. Herein, a bioinspired wrinkle-reinforced adaptive nanoclay-interlocked soft strain-sensor based on a highly stretchable and elastic ionic-conductive hydrogel is reported. This novel nanoclay-composite hydrogel exhibits excellent tensile properties and high sensing capacity with steady and reliable sensing performance due to the structural-mechanical-electrical integrity of the nanoclay crosslinked and nano-reinforced interpenetrating network. The incorporation of amphiphilic ions provides the hydrogel with significant protein resistance, reducing its non-specific adsorption to proteins upon implantation, improving its biosafety as an implanted device, and maintaining the authenticity of the sensing results. Based on the revealed sensing enhanced mechanism based on hierarchical ordered structures as a proof-of-concept application, this hydrogel sensor is demonstrated to be able to accurately localize the region where myocardial infarction occurs and may become a novel strategy for real-time monitoring of pathological changes in heart disease.

Smart Polymer Surfaces with Complex Wrinkled Patterns: Reversible, Non-Planar, Gradient, and Hierarchical Structures

This review summarizes the relevant developments in preparing wrinkled structures with variable characteristics. These include the formation of smart interfaces with reversible wrinkle formation, the construction of wrinkles in non-planar supports, or, more interestingly, the development of complex hierarchically structured wrinkled patterns. Smart wrinkled surfaces obtained using light-responsive, pH-responsive, temperature-responsive, and electromagnetic-responsive polymers are thoroughly described. These systems control the formation of wrinkles in particular surface positions and the reversible construction of planar-wrinkled surfaces. This know-how of non-planar substrates has been recently extended to other structures, thus forming wrinkled patterns on solid, hollow spheres, cylinders, and cylindrical tubes. Finally, this bibliographic analysis also presents some illustrative examples of the potential of wrinkle formation to create more complex patterns, including gradient structures and hierarchically multiscale-ordered wrinkles. The orientation and the wrinkle characteristics (amplitude and period) can also be modulated according to the requested application.

Photo-induced stress relaxation in reconfigurable disulfide-crosslinked supramolecular films visualized by dynamic wrinkling

Stress relaxation in reconfigurable supramolecular polymer networks is strongly related to intermolecular behavior. However, the relationship between molecular motion and macroscopic mechanics is usually vague, and the visualization of internal stress reflecting precise regulation of molecules remains challenging. Here, we present a strategy for visualizing photo-driven stress relaxation induced by infinitesimal perturbations in the intermolecular exchange reaction via reprogrammable wrinkle patterns. The supramolecular films exhibit visible changes in microscopic wrinkle topography through ultraviolet (UV)-induced dynamic disulfide exchange reaction. In accordance with the trans-scale theoretical models, which quantitatively evaluate the chemical-dependent mechanical stresses in the supramolecular network, the unexposed disordered wrinkles evolved into highly oriented patterns and underwent subsequent mutations after thermal treatment. The stress-sensitive wrinkle macro-patterns can be repetitively written/erased through network topology rearrangement using different stimuli. This strategy provides an approach for visualizing and understanding the molecular behavior from dynamic chemistry to mechanical changes, and directly programming wrinkle patterns with regulated structures.

Photodimerization induced hierarchical and asymmetric iontronic micropatterns

Micropatterning various ion-based modality materials offers compelling advantages for functionality enhancement in iontronic pressure sensing, piezoionic mechanoreception, and skin-interfaced electrode adhesion. However, most existing patterning techniques for iontronic materials suffer from low flexibility and limited modulation capability. Herein, we propose a facile and robust method to fabricate hierarchical and asymmetrical iontronic micropatterns (denoted as HAIMs) through programmed regulation of the internal stress distribution and the local ionic migration among an iontronic host. The resultant HAIMs with arbitrarily regulated morphologies and region-dependent ionic electrical performance can be readily made via localized photodimerization of an anthracene-functionalized ionic liquid copolymer (denoted as An-PIL) and subsequent vapor oxidative polymerization of 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT). Based on the piezoionic effect within the resultant distinct doped PEDOT, HAIMs can serve as a scalable iontronic potential generator. Successful syntheses of these fascinating micropatterns may accelerate the development of patterned iontronic materials in a flexible, programmable, and functionally adaptive form.

Dynamic Surface Wrinkles for In Situ Light-Driven Dynamic Gratings

Dynamic diffraction gratings (DDGs) are considered as one of the most promising technologies for application in smart optical devices because of their in situ dynamic regulation of light propagation on demand; however, it is still a challenge to fabricate dynamic periodic micro/nanostructures due to limited materials and processes. Here, a facile and feasible strategy to construct a near-infrared (NIR) radiation-driven DDG is developed based on a double-sided surface pattern, which is fabricated by dynamic wrinkles and/or soft-imprinted static wrinkles. Poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) containing carbon nanotubes (CNTs) serves as the substrate, and wrinkles are formed on both sides. The resulting double-sided wrinkle pattern can be used as a DDG to generate various adjustable two-dimensional (2D) diffraction patterns driven by NIR light. Furthermore, with various combinations of wrinkles, we demonstrated a single-sided responsive DDG and a double-sided responsive DDG to realize the evolution of diffraction patterns from 2D to one-dimensional (1D) and 2D to zero-dimensional (0D), respectively. The results provide an alternative for DDGs that will have wide applications in smart display, sensing, and imaging systems.

Light-driven dynamic surface wrinkles for adaptive visible camouflage

Camouflage is widespread in nature, engineering, and the military. Dynamic surface wrinkles enable a material the on-demand control of the reflected optical signal and may provide an alternative to achieve adaptive camouflage. Here, we demonstrate a feasible strategy for adaptive visible camouflage based on light-driven dynamic surface wrinkles using a bilayer system comprising an anthracene-containing copolymer (PAN) and pigment-containing poly (dimethylsiloxane) (pigment-PDMS). In this system, the photothermal effect-induced thermal expansion of pigment-PDMS could eliminate the wrinkles. The multiwavelength light-driven dynamic surface wrinkles could tune the scattering of light and the visibility of the PAN film interference color. Consequently, the color captured by the observer could switch between the exposure state that is distinguished from the background and the camouflage state that is similar to the surroundings. The bilayer wrinkling system toward adaptive visible camouflage is simple to configure, easy to operate, versatile, and exhibits in situ dynamic characteristics without any external sensors and extra stimuli.

Kinetics for the Slip Motion of Ripple Dislocations on Gold-Coated Poly(dimethylsiloxane)

Understanding the evolution of the defects in surface patterns is of practical importance to improve the performance and structural durability of the pattern-based micro- and nanodevices. In this work, we investigate the effects of temperature, compressive strain, and relative direction of the compression to the prestretch on the slip motion of ripple dislocations formed on the surface of gold-coated poly(dimethylsiloxane) films. Applying compression in the direction parallel to the direction of prestretch cannot cause the slip motion of the ripple dislocations. The initial velocity of the slip motion of the ripple dislocations increases with the increases in temperature and compressive strain. The temperature dependence of the ratios of the configuration force to the viscous coefficient and the viscous coefficient to the effective mass of the ripple dislocations follows the Arrhenius equation.

Earthworm-Inspired Ultradurable Superhydrophobic Fabrics from Adaptive Wrinkled Skin

Wrapped by periodically wrinkled skin, soft earthworm shows excellent robustness against sticky soil. Mimicking this deformation adaptability, here, we report an ultradurable superhydrophobic fabric by exploiting the formation of adaptive, soft wrinkled poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) skins. Uniform wrinkles are created on woven fabric fibers due to the surface instability of PDMS coating with a cross-linking gradient induced by Ar plasma treatment. Both the surface topography of wrinkles and the viscoelasticity of the underlying compliant layer to release stress endow the treated superhydrophobic fabrics with extraordinary durability, withstanding 800 standard laundries or 1000 rubbing cycles under 44.8 kPa. Additionally, superhydrophobic fabrics are self-healable after heating or plasma treatment. This insight of engineering soft skins with periodic submicron surface topography and gradient modulus provides a pathway for the design of ultradurable, multifunctional wearables.

Light-Induced Programmable 2D Ordered Patterns Based on a Hyperbranched Poly(ether amine) (hPEA)-Functionalized Graphene Film

Dynamic complex surface topography with ordered and tunable morphologies, which can provide on-demand control of surface properties to realize smart surfaces, is gaining much attention yet remains challenging in terms of fabrication. Here, a facile, robust, and controllable method is demonstrated to fabricate programmable two-dimensional (2D) ordered patterns with multiresponsive 2D ultrathin materials, comprised of anthracene-capped hyperbranched poly(ether amine) (hPEA-AN)-functionalized graphene (hPEA-AN@G). By combining the stimuli-responsiveness and UV sensitivity of hPEA-AN and excellent out-of-plane deformation and NIR-to-thermal conversion of graphene, the process of "writing/uploading" initial information is conducted through the initial exposure to 365 nm UV light to generate the 2D ordered pattern first; second, inducing swelling strain via moisture to create the hierarchical topographic pattern (orderly oriented pattern) is the process of "modification and erasable rewriting"; third, alternating NIR or 254 nm UV light blanket exposure are the two ways of erasing the information. Consequently, taking advantage of the multiresponsive dynamic wrinkling/ordered patterning, we can program globally 2D ordered surface patterns with diverse morphologies on demand and manipulate the resulted surface properties as desired.

Periodic Wrinkle-Patterned Single-Crystalline Ferroelectric Oxide Membranes with Enhanced Piezoelectricity

Self-assembled membranes with periodic wrinkled patterns are the critical building blocks of various flexible electronics, where the wrinkles are usually designed and fabricated to provide distinct functionalities. These membranes are typically metallic and organic materials with good ductility that are tolerant of complex deformation. However, the preparation of oxide membranes, especially those with intricate wrinkle patterns, is challenging due to their inherently strong covalent or ionic bonding, which usually leads to material crazing and brittle fracture. Here, wrinkle-patterned BaTiO₃ (BTO)/poly(dimethylsiloxane) membranes with finely controlled parallel, zigzag, and mosaic patterns are prepared. The BTO layers show excellent flexibility and can form well-ordered and periodic wrinkles under compressive in-plane stress. Enhanced piezoelectricity is observed at the sites of peaks and valleys of the wrinkles where the largest strain gradient is generated. Atomistic simulations further reveal that the excellent elasticity and the correlated coupling between polarization and strain/strain gradient are strongly associated with ferroelectric domain switching and continuous dipole rotation. The out-of-plane polarization is primarily generated at compressive regions, while the in-plane polarization dominates at the tensile regions. The wrinkled ferroelectric oxides with differently strained regions and correlated polarization distributions would pave a way toward novel flexible electronics.

Regulating surface wrinkles using light

Regulating existing micro and nano wrinkle structures into desired configurations is urgently necessary yet remains challenging, especially modulating wrinkle direction and location on demand. In this work, we propose a novel light-controlled strategy for surface wrinkles, which can dynamically and precisely regulate all basic characteristics of wrinkles, including wavelength, amplitude, direction and location (λ, A, θ and L_c), and arbitrarily tune wrinkle topographies in two dimensions (2D). By considering the bidirectional Poisson's effect and soft boundary conditions, a modified theoretical model depicting the relation between stress distributions and the basic characteristics was developed to reveal the mechanical mechanism of the regulation strategy. Furthermore, the resulting 2D ordered wrinkles can be used as a dynamic optical grating and a smart template to reversibly regulate the morphology of various functional materials. This study will pave the way for wrinkle regulation and guide fabrication technology for functional wrinkled surfaces.

Dynamic wrinkling pattern exhibiting tunable fluorescence for anticounterfeiting applications

A dynamic surface pattern with a topography and fluorescence in response to environmental stimulus can enable information recording, hiding, and reading. Such patterns are therefore widely used in information security and anticounterfeiting. Here, we demonstrate a dynamic dual pattern using a supramolecular network comprising a copolymer containing pyridine (P4VP-nBA-S) and hydroxyl distyrylpyridine (DSP-OH) as the skin layer for bilayer wrinkling systems, in which both the wrinkle morphology and fluorescence color can be simultaneously regulated by visible light-triggered isomerization of DSP-OH, or acids. Acid-induced protonation of pyridines can dynamically regulate the cross-linking of the skin layer through hydrogen bonding, and the fluorescence of DSP-OH. On selective irradiation with 450 nm visible light or acid treatment, the resulting hierarchical patterned surface becomes smooth and wrinkled reversibly, and simultaneously its fluorescence changes dynamically from blue to orange-red. The smart surfaces with dynamic hierarchical wrinkles and fluorescence can find potential application in anticounterfeiting.

Dynamic Interpenetrating Polymer Network (IPN) Strategy for Multiresponsive Hierarchical Pattern of Reversible Wrinkle

Dynamic micro-/nanowrinkle patterns with response to multienvironmental stimuli can offer a facile method for on-demand regulation of surface properties, thus allowing for generation of a smart surface. Here a practical yet robust strategy is described to fabricate redox, light and thermal responsive wrinkle by building dynamic double interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) as the top layer for a typical bilayer system. IPNs were constructed through the photochemical reaction of a mixture comprised of light-sensitive anthracene-containing polymer (PAN) and redox-sensitive disulfide-containing diacrylate monomer (DSDA). Thanks to the dynamic covalent reversible C-C bond in PAN and S-S bond in DSDA, the morphology of wrinkled surface not only can be reversibly and precisely (micrometer scale) tailored to all kinds of complicated hierarchical pattern permanently, but also can be controlled temporarily by irradiation of near-infrared light (NIR). A sine wave model is proposed to investigate the dynamics of real-time reversible wrinkle evolution. This general approach based on IPN allows independent multistimuli control over wettability and optical properties on the wrinkled surface, thus, presents a considerable alternative to implement a smart surface.

Smart Patterned Surface with Dynamic Wrinkles

Patterned surfaces are fundamentally important to physics, chemistry, materials, and biology science, endowing significant functions and thus bearing broad and fantastic applications whether in natural or man-made events. Among the various methods for patterning surfaces, wrinkling or buckling offers a powerful alternative to prepare surface patterns because of its spontaneous nature, versatility, easy preparation in large-scale, and capability to be responsive to various stimuli. In particular, patterned surfaces with dynamic wrinkles can tailor the encoded surface properties on demand and can provide a promising alternative for smart surfaces, which has potential for wide applications in enhanced and tunable optical or photoelectric devices, responsive microstructures, switchable wettability, smart adhesion and friction, and so on. The concept of smart patterned surfaces based on dynamic wrinkles is fundamental and versatile, and it is expected that there will be extensive future work based on this concept in generalizing this work to other smart materials and systems, and in using dynamic pattern systems to tune not only morphology but also functional properties encoded in the system's topography. In this Account, we present recent progress on smart surfaces with dynamic wrinkle patterns, including their design, preparation, and potential applications. First, we provide a brief introduction of a basic concept for mechanical instability induced wrinkle patterns and outline the general strategies and mechanics for dynamic wrinkles. Then, we discuss how the wrinkling and dewrinkling processes of a rigid skin bound to a soft substrate in bilayers or gradient layer systems occur by controlling the mechanical properties and geometric characteristics of the top and bulk layers, thereby paving the way for a smart patterned surface using chemical and physical approaches. Next, we discuss various chemical and physical stimuli, including light, temperature, pH, and chemicals, which can be harnessed into an extensive library of complex dynamic wrinkles. We highlight recent advances in preparing multiresponsive dynamic wrinkling patterns by adjusting the intrinsic properties of the skin layers (i.e., Young's modulus and cross-linking density) via dynamic chemistry, such as the Diels-Alder reaction, photodimerization, and supramolecular chemistry. Then, we outline how functional inclusions, such as photothermic or photoelectric additives and magnetic nanoparticles, can enable the composite elastic substrate as a dynamic platform for various functional top-layers to fabricate a smart surface for a desired function. In particular, photothermally reconfigurable wrinkle systems were investigated, where the carbon nanotube (CNT) served to efficiently convert its absorbed light energy into heat, hence actuating a real-time response of a near-infrared light (NIR)-sensitive wrinkle pattern and providing access to the development of advanced optoelectronic devices. In addition, based on their unique characteristics, applications of dynamic wrinkle patterns for smart displays, memory, flexible electronics, dynamic gratings, tunable adhesion, friction, and wettability are presented. Finally, we conclude by offering our perspective on future developments of this rapidly evolving field.

Light-Written Reversible 3D Fluorescence and Topography Dual-Pattern with Memory and Self-Healing Abilities

To achieve the dynamical dual-pattern with multiplex information of complex topography and 3D fluorescence is challenging yet promising for wide applications ranging from visual bioassays, memory, smart devices to smart display. Here, we develop a convenient, reliable, and versatile method to realize the well-ordered dual-pattern with reversible topography and 3D fluorescence via a light direct-writing approach based on the wrinkle mechanism. By introducing the charge transfer (CT) interaction between π-electron-rich anthracene (AN) and π-electron-poor naphthalene diimide (NDI) into the polymer system, both modulus and fluorescence of the polymer films can be spatially regulated through the photodimerization of AN, which is controlled in-plane by photomasks, and becomes gradient in the vertical direction due to the filter effect of light. Therefore, the exposed sample displays a well-ordered complex pattern with the same topography as the applied photomask and 3D gradient change of fluorescence from red to green laterally across the layers simultaneously. The spatial cross-linking and CT interaction of the gradient layer can be controlled independently, which not only provides the reliability and reversibility of the topographical and fluorescence dual-pattern but also endows the possibility for tailoring the pattern with memory and self-healing. These characters of the dual-pattern with reversible topography and 3D fluorescence declare the clear applications in smart multiplex displays, memory, anticounterfeiting, visual detections, and so on.
