Interpolation between W Dopant and Co Vacancy in CoOOH for Enhanced Oxygen Evolution Catalysis

Scalable solid-state synthesis of 2D transition metal oxide/graphene hybrid materials and their utilization for microsupercapacitors

Two-dimensional metal oxide (MO) nanostructures have unique properties compared with their bulk or 0D and 1D (nanoparticle and nanowire) counterparts. Their abundant surface area and atomically thin 2D structure are advantageous for their applications in catalysis and energy, as well as integration with 2D layered materials such as graphene and reduced graphene oxide (rGO). However, fast and scalable synthesis of 2D MOs and their nanocomposites remains challenging. Here, we developed a microwave-assisted solid-state synthesis method for the scalable generation of 2D MOs and 2D MO/rGO nanocomposites with tunable structure and composition. The structures and properties of 2D Fe2O3 and 2D ZnO as well as their nanocomposites with rGO were systematically investigated. The excellent electrochemical properties of such 2D MO/rGO nanocomposites also enable us to use them as electrode materials to fabricate microsupercapacitors. This work provides new insights into the scalable and solid-state synthesis of 2D nanocomposites and their potential applications in catalysis, energy conversion and storage.

Iron Active Center Coordination Reconstruction in Iron Carbide Modified on Porous Carbon for Superior Overall Water Splitting

In this work, a novel liquid nitrogen quenching strategy is engineered to fulfill iron active center coordination reconstruction within iron carbide (Fe3C) modified on biomass-derived nitrogen-doped porous carbon (NC) for initiating rapid hydrogen and oxygen evolution, where the chrysanthemum tea (elm seeds, corn leaves, and shaddock peel, etc.) is treated as biomass carbon source within Fe3C and NC. Moreover, the original thermodynamic stability is changed through the corresponding force generated by liquid nitrogen quenching and the phase transformation is induced with rich carbon vacancies with the increasing instantaneous temperature drop amplitude. Noteworthy, the optimizing intermediate absorption/desorption is achieved by new phases, Fe coordination, and carbon vacancies. The Fe3C/NC-550 (550 refers to quenching temperature) demonstrates outstanding overpotential for hydrogen evolution reaction (26.3 mV at -10 mA cm-2) and oxygen evolution reaction (281.4 mV at 10 mA cm-2), favorable overall water splitting activity (1.57 V at 10 mA cm-2). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations further confirm that liquid nitrogen quenching treatment can enhance the intrinsic electrocatalytic activity efficiently by optimizing the adsorption free energy of reaction intermediates. Overall, the above results authenticate that liquid nitrogen quenching strategy open up new possibilities for obtaining highly active electrocatalysts for the new generation of green energy conversion systems.

Pt-Modified High Entropy Rare Earth Oxide for Efficient Hydrogen Evolution in pH-Universal Environments

The development of efficient and stable catalysts for hydrogen production from electrolytic water in a wide pH range is of great significance in alleviating the energy crisis. Herein, Pt nanoparticles (NPs) anchored on the vacancy of high entropy rare earth oxides (HEREOs) were prepared for the first time for highly efficient hydrogen production by water electrolysis. The prepared Pt-(LaCeSmYErGdYb)O showed excellent electrochemical performances, which require only 12, 57, and 77 mV to achieve a current density of 100 mA cm-2 in 0.5 M H2SO4, 1.0 M KOH, and 1.0 M PBS environments, respectively. In addition, Pt-(LaCeSmYErGdYb)O has successfully worked at 400 mA cm-2 @ 60 °C for 100 h in 0.5 M H2SO4, presenting the high mass activity of 37.7 A mg-1Pt and turnover frequency (TOF) value of 38.2 s-1 @ 12 mV, which is far superior to the recently reported hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalysts. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations have revealed that the interactions between Pt and HEREO have optimized the electronic structures for electron transfer and the binding strength of intermediates. This further leads to optimized proton binding and water dissociation, supporting the highly efficient and robust HER performances in different environments. This work provides a new idea for the design of efficient RE-based electrocatalysts.

Electrochemically Induced Ru/CoOOH Synergistic Catalyst as Bifunctional Electrode Materials for Alkaline Overall Water Splitting

Efficient and affordable price bifunctional electrocatalysts based on transition metal oxides for oxygen and hydrogen evolution reactions have a balanced efficiency, but it remains a significant challenge to control their activity and durability. Herein, a trace Ru (0.74 wt.%) decorated ultrathin CoOOH nanosheets (≈4 nm) supported on the surface of nickel foam (Ru/CoOOH@NF) is rationally designed via an electrochemically induced strategy to effectively drive the electrolysis of alkaline overall water splitting. The as-synthesized Ru/CoOOH@NF electrocatalysts integrate the advantages of a large number of different HER (Ru nanoclusters) and OER (CoOOH nanosheets) active sites as well as strong in-suit structure stability, thereby exhibiting exceptional catalytic activity. In particular, the ultra-low overpotential of the HER (36 mV) and the OER (264 mV) are implemented to achieve 10 mA cm-2 . Experimental and theoretical calculations also reveal that Ru/CoOOH@NF possesses high intrinsic conductivity, which facilitates electron release from H2 O and H-OH bond breakage and accelerates electron/mass transfer by regulating the charge distribution. This work provides a new avenue for the rational design of low-cost and high-activity bifunctional electrocatalysts for large-scale water-splitting technology and expects to help contribute to the creation of various hybrid electrocatalysts.

High-spin Co3+ in cobalt oxyhydroxide for efficient water oxidation

Cobalt oxyhydroxide (CoOOH) is a promising catalytic material for oxygen evolution reaction (OER). In the traditional CoOOH structure, Co3+ exhibits a low-spin state configuration ([Formula: see text]), with electron transfer occurring in face-to-face [Formula: see text] orbitals. In this work, we report the successful synthesis of high-spin state Co3+ CoOOH structure, by introducing coordinatively unsaturated Co atoms. As compared to the low-spin state CoOOH, electron transfer in the high-spin state CoOOH occurs in apex-to-apex [Formula: see text] orbitals, which exhibits faster electron transfer ability. As a result, the high-spin state CoOOH performs superior OER activity with an overpotential of 226 mV at 10 mA cm-2, which is 148 mV lower than that of the low-spin state CoOOH. This work emphasizes the effect of the spin state of Co3+ on OER activity of CoOOH based electrocatalysts for water splitting, and thus provides a new strategy for designing highly efficient electrocatalysts.

Controllable Electronic Transfer Tailoring d-band Center via Cobalt-Oxygen-Bridged Ru/Fe Dual-sites for Boosted Oxygen Evolution

Rational tailoring of the electronic structure at the defined active center of reconstructed metal (oxy)hydroxides (MOOH) during oxygen evolution reaction (OER) remains a challenge. With the guidance of density functional theory (DFT), herein a dual-site regulatory strategy is reported to tailor the d-band center of the Co site in CoOOH via the controlled electronic transfer at the Ru─O─Co─O─Fe bonding structure. Through the bridged O2- site, electrons are vastly flowed from the t2g -orbital of the Ru site to the low-spin orbital of the Co site in the Ru-O-Co coordination and further transfer from the strong electron-electron repulsion of the Co site to the Fe site by the Co-O-Fe coordination, which balancing the electronic configuration of Co sites to weaken the over-strong adsorption energy barrier of OH* and O* , respectively. Benefiting from the highly active of the Co site, the constructed (Ru2 Fe2 Co6 )OOH provide an extremely low overpotential of 248 mV and a Tafel slope of 32.5 mV dec-1 at 10 mA cm-2 accompanied by long durability in alkaline OER, far superior over the pristine and Co-O-Fe bridged CoOOH catalysts. This work provides guidance for the rational design and in-depth analysis of the optimized role of metal dual-sites.

Loading IrOx Clusters on MnO2 Boosts Acidic Water Oxidation via Metal-Support Interaction

Noble metal-based electrocatalysts are crucial for efficient acidic water oxidation to develop green hydrogen energy. However, traditional noble metal catalysts loaded on inactive substrates show limited intrinsic catalytic activity, and their large sizes have compromised the atom efficiency of these noble metals. Herein, IrOx nanoclusters with sizes below 2 nm, displaying high atom-utilization efficiency of Ir species, were supported on a redox-active MnO2 nanosubstrate (IrOx/MnO2) with different phases (α-MnO2, δ-MnO2, and ε-MnO2) to explore the optimal combination. Electrochemical measurements showed that IrOx/ε-MnO2 had excellent OER performance with a low overpotential of 225 mV at 10 mA cm-2 in 0.5 M H2SO4, superior to its counterpart, IrOx/α-MnO2 (242 mV) and IrOx/δ-MnO2 (286 mV). Moreover, it also delivered robust stability with no obvious change in operating potential at 10 mA cm-2 during 50 h of continuous operation. Combining the XPS results and Bader charge analysis, we demonstrated that the strong metal-support interactions of IrOx/ε-MnO2 could effectively regulate the electronic structures of the active Ir atoms and stabilize IrOx nanoclusters on supports to suppress their detachment, resulting in significantly enhanced catalytic activity and stability for acidic OER. DFT calculations further supported that the enhanced catalytic OER performance of IrOx/ε-MnO2 could be ascribed to the appropriate strength of interactions between the active Ir sites and the reaction intermediates of the potential-determining step (*O and *OOH) regulated by the redox-active substrates.

Reversely Trapping Isolated Atoms in High Oxidation State for Accelerating the Oxygen Evolution Reaction Kinetics

Developing efficient electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is paramount to the energy conversion and storage devices. However, the structural complexity of heterogeneous electrocatalysts makes it a great challenge to elucidate the dynamic structural evolution and OER mechanisms. Here, we develop a controllable atom-trapping strategy to extract isolated Mo atom from the amorphous MoOx -decorated CoSe2 (a-MoOx @CoSe2 ) pre-catalyst into Co-based oxyhydroxide (Mo-CoOOH) through an ultra-fast self-reconstruction process during the OER process. This conceptual advance has been validated by operando characterizations, which reveals that the initially rapid Mo leaching can expedite the dynamic reconstruction of pre-catalyst, and simultaneously trap Mo species in high oxidation state into the lattice of in situ generated CoOOH support. Impressively, the OER kinetics of CoOOH has been greatly accelerated after the reverse decoration of Mo species, in which the Mo-CoOOH affords a markedly decreased overpotential of 297 mV at the current density of 100 mA cm-2 . Density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrate that the Co species have been greatly activated via the effective electron coupling with Mo species in high oxidation state. These findings open new avenues toward directly synthesizing atomically dispersed electrocatalysts for high-efficiency water splitting.

Facet Engineering and Pore Design Boost Dynamic Fe Exchange in Oxygen Evolution Catalysis to Break the Activity-Stability Trade-Off

The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) plays a vital role in renewable energy technologies, including in fuel cells, metal-air batteries, and water splitting; however, the currently available catalysts still suffer from unsatisfactory performance due to the sluggish OER kinetics. Herein, we developed a new catalyst with high efficiency in which the dynamic exchange mechanism of active Fe sites in the OER was regulated by crystal plane engineering and pore structure design. High-density nanoholes were created on cobalt hydroxide as the catalyst host, and then Fe species were filled inside the nanoholes. During the OER, the dynamic Fe was selectively and strongly adsorbed by the (101̅0) sites on the nanohole walls rather than the (0001) basal plane, and at the same time the space-confining effect of the nanohole slowed down the Fe diffusion from catalyst to electrolyte. As a result, a local high-flux Fe dynamic equilibrium inside the nanoholes for OER was achieved, as demonstrated by the Fe57 isotope labeled mass spectrometry, thereby delivering a high OER activity. The catalyst showed a remarkably low overpotential of 228 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm-2, which is among the best cobalt-based catalysts reported so far. This special protection strategy for Fe also greatly improved the catalytic stability, reducing the Fe leaching amount by 2 orders of magnitude compared with the pure Fe hydroxide catalyst and thus delivering a long-term stability of 130 h. An assembled Zn-air battery was stably cycled for 170 h with a low discharge/charge voltage difference of 0.72 V.

Surface and near-surface engineering design of transition metal catalysts for promoting water splitting

Transition metal catalysts are widely used in the field of hydrogen production via water electrolysis. The surface state and near-surface environment of the catalysts greatly affect the efficiency of hydrogen production. Therefore, the rational design of surface engineering and near-surface engineering of transition metal catalysts can significantly improve the performance of water electrolysis. This review systematically introduces surface engineering strategies, including heteroatom doping, vacancy engineering, strain regulation, heterojunction effect, and surface reconstruction. These strategies optimize the surface electronic structure of the catalysts, expose more active sites, and promote the formation of highly active species, ultimately enhancing water electrolysis performance. Furthermore, near-surface engineering strategies, such as surface wettability, three-dimensional structure, high-curvature structure, external field assistance, and extra ion addition, are thoroughly discussed. These strategies expedite the mass transfer of reactants and gas products, improve the local chemical environment near the catalyst surface, and contribute toward achieving an industrial-level current density for overall water splitting. Finally, the key challenges faced by surface engineering and near-surface engineering of transition metal catalysts are highlighted and potential solutions are proposed. This review offers essential guidelines for the design and development of efficient transition metal catalysts for water electrolysis.

Recent Advances in Phase-Engineered Photocatalysts: Classification and Diversified Applications

Phase engineering is an emerging strategy for tuning the electronic states and catalytic functions of nanomaterials. Great interest has recently been captured by phase-engineered photocatalysts, including the unconventional phase, amorphous phase, and heterophase. Phase engineering of photocatalytic materials (including semiconductors and cocatalysts) can effectively affect the light absorption range, charge separation efficiency, or surface redox reactivity, resulting in different catalytic behavior. The applications for phase-engineered photocatalysts are widely reported, for example, hydrogen evolution, oxygen evolution, CO₂ reduction, and organic pollutant removal. This review will firstly provide a critical insight into the classification of phase engineering for photocatalysis. Then, the state-of-the-art development of phase engineering toward photocatalytic reactions will be presented, focusing on the synthesis and characterization methodologies for unique phase structure and the correlation between phase structure and photocatalytic performance. Finally, personal understanding of the current opportunities and challenges of phase engineering for photocatalysis will also be provided.

Directional editing of self-supported nanoarray electrode for adaptive paired-electrolysis

Anodic oxidation assisted hydrogen production under mild conditions powered by renewable electricity represents a sustainable approach to energy conversion systems. Here, we fabricated a versatile and universal self-supported nanoarray platform that can be intelligently edited to achieve adaptive electrocatalysis for alcohol oxidation reactions and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The obtained self-supported nanoarray electrocatalysts exhibit excellent catalytic activity due to the integration of multiple merits of rich nanointerface-reconstruction and self-supported hierarchical structures. Particularly, the membrane-free pair-electrolysis system coupling HER and ethylene glycol oxidation reaction (EGOR) required an applied voltage of only 1.25 V to drive the current density of 10 mA cm^-2, which is about 510 mV lower than that of the overall water splitting, showing the capability to simultaneously produce H₂ and formate with high Faradic efficiency and stability. This work demonstrates a catalytic self-supported nanoarray platform for energy-efficient production of high-purity H₂ and value-added chemicals.

Molecule-Enhanced Electrocatalysis of Sustainable Oxygen Evolution Using Organoselenium Functionalized Metal-Organic Nanosheets

Remolding the reactivity of metal active sites is critical to facilitate renewable electricity-powered water electrolysis. Doping heteroatoms, such as Se, into a metal crystal lattice has been considered an effective approach, yet usually suffers from loss of functional heteroatoms during harsh electrocatalytic conditions, thus leading to the gradual inactivation of the catalysts. Here, we report a new heteroatom-containing molecule-enhanced strategy toward sustainable oxygen evolution improvement. An organoselenium ligand, bis(3,5-dimethyl-1H-pyrazol-4-yl)selenide containing robust C-Se-C covalent bonds equipped in the precatalyst of ultrathin metal-organic nanosheets Co-SeMON, is revealed to significantly enhance the catalytic mass activity of the cobalt site by 25 times, as well as extend the catalyst operation time in alkaline conditions by 1 or 2 orders of magnitude compared with these reported metal selenides. A combination of various in situ/ex situ spectroscopic techniques, ab initio molecular dynamics, and density functional theory calculations unveiled the organoselenium intensified mechanism, in which the nonclassical bonding of Se to O-containing intermediates endows adsorption-energy regulation beyond the conventional scaling relationship. Our results showcase the great potential of molecule-enhanced catalysts for highly efficient and economical water oxidation.

Vacancy Defects in 2D Transition Metal Dichalcogenide Electrocatalysts: From Aggregated to Atomic Configuration

Vacancy defect engineering has been well leveraged to flexibly shape comprehensive physicochemical properties of diverse catalysts. In particular, growing research effort has been devoted to engineering chalcogen anionic vacancies (S/Se/Te) of 2D transition metal dichalcogenides (2D TMDs) toward the ultimate performance limit of electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). In spite of remarkable progress achieved in the past decade, systematic and in-depth insights into the state-of-the-art vacancy engineering for 2D-TMDs-based electrocatalysis are still lacking. Herein, this review delivers a full picture of vacancy engineering evolving from aggregated to atomic configurations covering their development background, controllable manufacturing, thorough characterization, and representative HER application. Of particular interest, the deep-seated correlations between specific vacancy regulation routes and resulting catalytic performance improvement are logically clarified in terms of atomic rearrangement, charge redistribution, energy band variation, intermediate adsorption-desorption optimization, and charge/mass transfer facilitation. Beyond that, a broader vision is cast into the cutting-edge research fields of vacancy-engineering-based single-atom catalysis and dynamic structure-performance correlations across catalyst service lifetime. Together with critical discussion on residual challenges and future prospects, this review sheds new light on the rational design of advanced defect catalysts and navigates their broader application in high-efficiency energy conversion and storage fields.

Tuning the Electronic and Steric Interaction at the Atomic Interface for Enhanced Oxygen Evolution

The two-dimensional surface or one-dimensional interface of heterogeneous catalysts is essential to determine the adsorption strengths and configurations of the reaction intermediates for desired activities. Recently, the development of single-atom catalysts has enabled an atomic-level understanding of catalytic processes. However, it remains obscure whether the conventional concept and mechanism of one-dimensional interface are applicable to zero-dimensional single atoms. In this work, we arranged the locations of single atoms to explore their interfacial interactions for improved oxygen evolution. When iridium single atoms were confined into the lattice of CoOOH, efficient electron transfer between Ir and Co tuned the adsorption strength of oxygenated intermediates. In contrast, atomic iridium species anchored on the surface of CoOOH induced inappreciable modification in electronic structures, whereas steric interactions with key intermediates at its Ir-OH-Co interface played a primary role in reducing its energy barrier toward oxygen evolution.

Sacrificial W Facilitates Self-Reconstruction with Abundant Active Sites for Water Oxidation

Water oxidation is an important reaction for multiple renewable energy conversion and storage-related devices and technologies. High-performance and stable electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are urgently required. Bimetallic (oxy)hydroxides have been widely used in alkaline OER as electrocatalysts, but their activity is still not satisfactory due to insufficient active sites. In this research, A unique and efficient approach of sacrificial W to prepare CoFe (oxy)hydroxides with abundant active species for OER is presented. Multiple ex situ and operando/in situ characterizations have validated the self-reconstruction of the as-prepared CoFeW sulfides to CoFe (oxy)hydroxides in alkaline OER with synchronous W etching. Experiments and theoretical calculations show that the sacrificial W in this process induces metal cation vacancies, which facilitates the in situ transformation of the intermediate metal hydroxide to CoFe-OOH with more high-valence Co(III), thus creating abundant active species for OER. The Co(III)-rich environment endows the in situ formed CoFe oxyhydroxide with high catalytic activity for OER on a simple flat glassy carbon electrode, outperforming those not treated by the sacrificial W procedure. This research demonstrates the influence of etching W on the electrocatalytic performance, and provides a low-cost means to improve the active sites of the in situ self-reconstructed bimetallic oxyhydroxides for OER.
