Stabilization of Metastable Halide Perovskite Lattices in the 2D Limit

Investigating the Structure-property Relationships of Two Cd-based Hybrid Multifunctional Compounds with High Tc, Bright Fluorescence and Wide Band-gap

Organic-inorganic hybrid multifunctional materials have shown significant application in lighting and sensor fields, owing to their prominent performance and diversity structures. Herein, we synthesized two multifunctional compounds: (propyl-quinuclidone)2 CdBr4 (1) and (F-butyl-quinuclidone)2 CdBr4 (2). By introducing light-emitting organic cation with flexible long chain, 1 and 2 exhibit excellent transition properties and bright blue-white fluorescence. Then, combine fluorescence lifetime and first-principal calculation, providing evidence for the electron transfer emission. Subsequently, investigated the impact of substituent carbon chain length (methyl to butyl), structural rigidity (C-C to C-F) and halide framework (Cl to I) on the fluorescence properties. Results indicate that Cd⋅⋅⋅Cd distance and structural rigidity play an important role in fluorescence. Overall, our research provides valuable insight and example for chemical modifications enhance compound performance.

Tuning Structure and Excitonic Properties of 2D Ruddlesden-Popper Germanium, Tin, and Lead Iodide Perovskites via Interplay between Cations

The compositional tunability of 2D metal halide perovskites enables exploration of diverse semiconducting materials with different structural features. However, rationally tuning the 2D perovskite structures to target physical properties for specific applications remains challenging, especially for lead-free perovskites. Here, we study the effect of the interplay of the B-site (Ge, Sn, and Pb), A-site (cesium, methylammonium, and formamidinium), and spacer cations on the structure and optical properties of a new series of 2D Ruddlesden-Popper perovskites using the previously unreported spacer cation 4-bromo-2-fluorobenzylammonium (4Br2FBZ). We report eight new crystal structures and study the consequence of varying the B-site (Pb, Sn, Ge) and dimension (n = 1, 2, vs 3D). Dimension strongly influences local distortion and structural symmetry, and the increased octahedral tilting and lone pair effects in Ge perovskites lead to a polar n = 2 perovskite that exhibits second harmonic generation, (4Br2FBZ)2(Cs)Ge2I7. In contrast, the analogous Sn and Pb perovskites remain centrosymmetric, but the B-site metal influences the photoluminescence properties. The Pb perovskites exhibit broad, defect-mediated emission at low temperature, whereas the Sn perovskites show purely excitonic emission over the entire temperature range, but the carrier recombination dynamics depend on dimensionality and dark excitonic states. Wholistic understanding of these differences that arise based on cations and dimensionality can guide the rational materials design of 2D perovskites for targeting physical properties for optoelectronic applications based on the interplay of cations and the connectivity of the inorganic framework.

Mesoporous Metastable CuTe2 Semiconductor

Binary metastable semiconductor materials offer exciting possibilities in the field of optoelectronics, such as photovoltaics, tunable photosensors, and detectors. However, understanding their properties and translating them into practical applications can sometimes be challenging, owing to their thermodynamic instability. Herein, we report a temperature-controlled crystallization technique involving electrochemical deposition to produce metastable CuTe2 thin films that can reliably function under ambient conditions. A series of in situ heating/cooling cycle tests from room temperature to 200 °C followed by spectral, morphological, and compound analyses (such as ultraviolet-visible light spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS)) suggest that the seeding electrodes play a key role in the realization of the metastable phase in CuTe2 films. In particular, CuTe2 films deposited on Al electrodes exhibit superior crystallinity and long-term stability compared with those grown on a Au substrate. The XRD data of thermally annealed CuTe2 thin films deposited on Al show a markedly sharp peak, indicating significantly increased crystal-domain sizes. Our method can be used to achieve the metastable phase of CuTe2 with a bandgap of 1.67 eV and offers outstanding photoresponsivity under different illumination conditions.

Highly Stable and Efficient Formamidinium-Based 2D Ruddlesden-Popper Perovskite Solar Cells via Lattice Manipulation

Formamidinium (FA)-based 2D perovskites have emerged as highly promising candidates in solar cells. However, the insertion of 2D spacer cations into the perovskite lattice concomitantly introduces microstrain and unfavorable orientations that hinder efficiency and stability. In this study, by finely tuning the FA-based 2D perovskite lattice through spacer cation engineering, a stable lattice structure with balanced distortion, microstrain relaxation, and reduced carrier-lattice interactions is achieved. These advancements effectively stabilize the inherently soft lattice against light and thermal-aging stress. To reduce the photocurrent loss induced by undesired crystal texture, a polarity-matched molecular-type selenourea (SENA) additive is further employed to modulate the crystallization kinetics. The introduction of the SENA significantly inhibits the disordered crystallization induced by spacer cations and drives the templated growth of the quantum well structure with a vertical orientation. This controlled crystallization process effectively reduces crystal defects and enhances charge separation. Ultimately, the optimized FA-based perovskite photovoltaic devices achieve a remarkable power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 20.03% (certified steady-state efficiency of 19.30%), setting a new record for low-n 2D perovskite solar cells. Furthermore, the devices exhibit less than 1% efficiency degradation after operating at maximum power point for 1000 h and maintain excellent stability after thermal aging and cycles of cold-warm shock, respectively.

Spontaneous Polarization Induced Optical Responses in a Two-Dimensional Ferroelectric Halide Perovskite

Two-dimensional (2D) halide perovskites exhibit unique structural and optical properties because large organic molecular cations distort the perovskite structure and the excitons confined in the 2D layers are stable. Here, we report the temperature dependences of the absorption spectra, second harmonic generation (SHG) intensity, and lattice constants of 2D perovskite (BA)2(EA)2Pb3I10 single crystals, where BA is n-butylammonium and EA is ethylammonium. We found that the Urbach tail of the absorption spectrum significantly changes at around 200 K and that the change is correlated with the SHG intensity and the in-plane lattice distortion. We concluded that a random distribution of spontaneous polarizations in the ferroelectric phase modifies the linewidth of the band-edge exciton transition and is the cause of the anomalous temperature dependence of the steepness parameter of the Urbach tail.

A high-performance metal halide perovskite-based laser-driven display

Laser-driven liquid crystal displays (LCDs) comprising metal halide perovskites (MHPs) as the blue-to-green/red color converters are at the forefront of ongoing intense research on the development and improvement of display devices. However, the inferior high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of MHPs under the excitation of high-power blue light and photoluminescence deterioration at high temperatures remain major concerns. Herein, we design a kind of octylamine-modified MHP via binding energy engineering, and the synthesized materials show PLQY of 97.6% under the excitation of a blue laser at 450 nm. Meanwhile, this design endows a structural self-healing ability to achieve a high PLQY and luminescence stability under high temperature (90 °C) and high flux excitation (386 mW cm-2). The blue light-excitable MHPs with a near unity PLQY, strong stability, and low PLQY deterioration are further encapsulated into a laser-driven LCD device. This prototype demonstrates excellent color gamut (132% NTSC, 98% Rec. 2020), illuminance intensity (>10 000 lux), and energy consumption (47.5% of commercial consumption), and hence is expected to be beneficial for the reduction of energy consumption in backlight display devices, particularly in large-screen outdoor displays.

Spatial Heterogeneity of Biexcitons in Two-Dimensional Ruddlesden-Popper Lead Iodide Perovskites

Quantum confinement in two-dimensional (2D) Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) perovskites leads to the formation of stable quasi-particles, including excitons and biexcitons, the latter of which may enable lasing in these materials. Due to their hybrid organic-inorganic structures and the solution phase synthesis, microcrystals of 2D RP perovskites can be quite heterogeneous, with variations in excitonic and biexcitonic properties between crystals from the same synthesis and even within individual crystals. Here, we employ one- and two-quantum two-dimensional white-light microscopy to systematically study the spatial variations of excitons and biexcitons in microcrystals of a series of 2D RP perovskites BA2MAn-1PbnI3n+1 (n = 2-4, BA= butylammonium, MA = methylammonium). We find that the average biexciton binding energy of around 60 meV is essentially independent of the perovskite layer thickness (n). We also resolve spatial variations of the exciton and biexciton energies on micron length scales within individual crystals. By comparing the one-quantum and two-quantum spectra at each pixel, we conclude that biexcitons are more sensitive to their environments than excitons. These results shed new light on the ways disorder can modify the energetic landscape of excitons and biexcitons in RP perovskites and how biexcitons can be used as a sensitive probe of the microscopic environment of a semiconductor.

Pressure-induced distinct excitonic properties of 2D perovskites with isomeric organic molecules for spacer cations

Spacer organic cations in two-dimensional (2D) perovskites play vital roles in inducing structural distortion of the inorganic components and dominating unique excitonic properties. However, there is still little understanding of spacer organic cations with identical chemical formulas, and different configurations have an impact on the excitonic dynamics. Herein, we investigate and compare the evolution of the structural and photoluminescence (PL) properties of [CH₃(CH₂)₄NH₃]₂PbI₄ ((PA)₂PbI₄) and [(CH₃)₂CH(CH₂)₂NH₃]₂PbI₄ ((PNA)₂PbI₄) with isomeric organic molecules for spacer cations by combining steady-state absorption, PL, Raman and time-resolved PL spectra under high pressures. Intriguingly, the band gap is continuously tuned under pressure and decreased to 1.6 eV at 12.5 GPa for (PA)₂PbI₄ 2D perovskites. Simultaneously, multiple phase transitions occur and the carrier lifetimes are prolonged. In contrast, the PL intensity of (PNA)₂PbI₄ 2D perovskites exhibits an almost 15-fold enhancement at 1.3 GPa and an ultrabroad spectral range of up to 300 nm in the visible region at 7.48 GPa. These results indicate that the isomeric organic cations (PA⁺ and PNA⁺) with different configurations significantly mediate distinct excitonic behaviors due to different resilience to high pressures and reveal a novel interaction mechanism between organic spacer cations and inorganic layers under compression. Our findings not only shed light on the vital roles of isomeric organic molecules as organic spacer cations in 2D perovskites under pressure, but also open a route to rationally design highly efficient 2D perovskites incorporating such spacer organic molecules in optoelectronic devices.

Porous and Water Stable 2D Hybrid Metal Halide with Broad Light Emission and Selective H2 O Vapor Sorption

In this work we report a strategy for generating porosity in hybrid metal halide materials using molecular cages that serve as both structure-directing agents and counter-cations. Reaction of the [2.2.2] cryptand (DHS) linker with Pb^II in acidic media gave rise to the first porous and water-stable 2D metal halide semiconductor (DHS)₂ Pb₅ Br₁₄ . The corresponding material is stable in water for a year, while gas and vapor-sorption studies revealed that it can selectively and reversibly adsorb H₂ O and D₂ O at room temperature (RT). Solid-state NMR measurements and DFT calculations verified the incorporation of H₂ O and D₂ O in the organic linker cavities and shed light on their molecular configuration. In addition to porosity, the material exhibits broad light emission centered at 617 nm with a full width at half-maximum (FWHM) of 284 nm (0.96 eV). The recorded water stability is unparalleled for hybrid metal halide and perovskite materials, while the generation of porosity opens new pathways towards unexplored applications (e.g. solid-state batteries) for this class of hybrid semiconductors.

Linear optical afterglow and nonlinear optical harmonic generation from chiral tin(IV) halides: the role of lattice distortions

The striking chemical variability of hybrid organic-inorganic metal halides (HOMHs) endows them with fascinating optoelectronic properties. The inorganic skeletons of HOMHs are often flexible and their lattice deformations could serve as an effective factor for enabling the functionalities of HOMHs. Here, the linear and nonlinear optical properties of zero-dimensional (0D) tin(IV) halides have been tuned by structural distortion facilitated by the chiral amines. Enantiopure α-methylbenzyl ammoniums (XMBA, X = Cl, F) effectively transfer their chirality to the inorganic scaffolds when forming the tin(IV) halides, which enables polar arrangements in their crystals and leads to outstanding second-order nonlinear optical performances. In contrast, the racemic mixture of R- and S-FMBA results in the formation of HOMHs with room temperature phosphorescence. The lower lattice deformation in (rac-FMBA)₂SnCl₆ restrains the non-radiative decay from electron-phonon coupling and facilitates the photoluminescence. Meanwhile, the marked π-π interaction stabilizes the T₁ state for phosphorescent emission. These distinct linear and nonlinear optical properties denote the important role that the lattice distortion plays in tuning the optical properties of low-dimensional HOMHs, and offer a promising perspective of 0D tin(IV) halides for applications in optoelectronic materials and devices.

The Antiperovskite-Type Oxychalcogenides Ae3 Q[GeOQ3 ] (Ae = Ba, Sr; Q = S, Se) with Large Second Harmonic Generation Responses and Wide Band Gaps

Oxychalcogenides capable of exhibiting excellent balance among large second-harmonic generation (SHG) response, wide band gap (E_g ), and suitable birefringence (Δn) are ideal materials class for infrared nonlinear optical (IR NLO) crystals. However, rationally designing a new high-performance oxychalcogenide IR NLO crystal still faces a huge challenge because it requires the optimal orientations of the heteroanionic groups in oxychalcogenide. Herein, a series of antiperovskite-type oxychalcogenides, Ae₃ Q[GeOQ₃ ] (Ae = Ba, Sr; Q = S, Se), which were synthesized by employing the antiperovskite-type Ba₃ S[GeS₄ ] as the structure template. Their structures feature novel three-dimensinoal frameworks constructed by distorted [QAe₆ ] octahedra, which are further filled by [GeOQ₃ ] tetrahedra to form antiperovskite-type structures. Based on the unique antiperovskite-type structures, the favorable alignment of the polarizable [GeOQ₃ ] tetrahedra and distorted [QAe₆ ] octahedra have been achieved. These contribute the ideal combination of large SHG response (0.7-1.5 times that of AgGaS₂ ), wide E_g (3.52-4.10 eV), and appropriate Δn (0.017-0.035) in Ae₃ Q[GeOQ₃ ]. Theoretical calculations and crystal structure analyses revealed that the strong SHG and wide E_g could be attributed to the polarizable [GeOQ₃ ] tetrahedra and distorted [QAe₆ ] octahedra. This research provides a new exemplification for the design of high-performance IR NLO materials.

Stereochemically Active Lone Pairs and Nonlinear Optical Properties of Two-Dimensional Multilayered Tin and Germanium Iodide Perovskites

Two-dimensional (2D) metal halide perovskites are promising tunable semiconductors. Previous studies have focused on Pb-based structures, whereas the multilayered Sn- and Ge-based analogues are largely unexplored, even though they potentially exhibit more diverse structural chemistry and properties associated with the more polarizable ns² lone-pair electrons. Herein, we report the synthesis and structures of 2D tin iodide perovskites (BA)₂(A)Sn₂I₇, where BA = n-butylammonium and A = methylammonium, formamidinium, dimethylammonium, guanidinium, or acetamidinium, and those of 2D germanium iodide perovskites (BA)₂(A)Ge₂I₇, where A = methylammonium or formamidinium. By comparing these structures along with their Pb counterparts, we establish correlations between the effect of group IV-cation's lone-pair stereochemical activity on the perovskite crystal structures and the resulting semiconducting properties such as bandgaps and carrier-phonon interactions and nonlinear optical properties. We find that the strength of carrier-phonon interaction increases with increasing lone-pair activity, leading to a more prominent photoluminescence tail on the low-energy side. Moreover, (BA)₂(A)Ge₂I₇ exhibit strong second harmonic generation with second-order nonlinear coefficients of ∼10 pm V^-1 that are at least 10 times those of Sn counterparts and 100 times those of Pb counterparts. We also report the third-order two-photon absorption coefficients of (BA)₂(A)Sn₂I₇ to be ∼10 cm MW^-1, which are one order of magnitude larger than those of the Pb counterparts and traditional inorganic semiconductors. These results not only highlight the role of lone-pair activity in linking the compositions and physical properties of 2D halide perovskites but also demonstrate 2D tin and germanium iodide perovskites as promising lead-free alternatives for nonlinear optoelectronic devices.

Interplay of Kinetic and Thermodynamic Reaction Control Explains Incorporation of Dimethylammonium Iodide into CsPbI3

CsPbI₃ is a promising material for optoelectronics owing to its thermal robustness and favorable bandgap. However, its fabrication is challenging because its photoactive phase is thermodynamically unstable at room temperature. Adding dimethylammonium (DMA) alleviates this instability and is currently understood to result in the formation of DMA _x Cs_1-x PbI₃ perovskite solid solutions. Here, we use NMR of the ¹³³Cs and ¹³C local structural probes to show that these solid solutions are not thermodynamically stable, and their synthesis under thermodynamic control leads to a segregated mixture of yellow one-dimensional DMAPbI₃ phase and δ-CsPbI₃. We show that mixed-cation DMA _x Cs_1-x PbI₃ perovskite phases only form when they are kinetically trapped by rapid antisolvent-induced crystallization. We explore the energetics of DMA incorporation into CsPbI₃ using first-principles calculations and molecular dynamics simulations and find that this process is energetically unfavorable. Our results provide a complete atomic-level picture of the mechanism of DMA-induced stabilization of the black perovskite phase of CsPbI₃ and shed new light on this deceptively simple material.

Understanding Electron-Phonon Interactions in 3D Lead Halide Perovskites from the Stereochemical Expression of 6s2 Lone Pairs

The electron-phonon (e-ph) interaction in lead halide perovskites (LHPs) plays a role in a variety of physical phenomena. Unveiling how the local lattice distortion responds to charge carriers is a critical step toward understanding the e-ph interaction in LHPs. Herein, we advance a fundamental understanding of the e-ph interaction in LHPs from the perspective of stereochemical activity of 6s² lone-pair electrons on the Pb²⁺ cation. We demonstrate a model system based on three LHPs with distinctive lone-pair activities for studying the structure-property relationships. By tuning the A-cation chemistry, we synthesized single-crystal CsPbBr₃, (MA_0.13EA_0.87)PbBr₃ (MA⁺ = methylammonium; EA⁺ = ethylammonium), and (MHy)PbBr₃ (MHy⁺ = methylhydrazinium), which exhibit stereo-inactive, dynamic stereo-active, and static stereo-active lone pairs, respectively. This gives rise to distinctive local lattice distortions and low-frequency vibrational modes. We find that the e-ph interaction leads to a blue shift of the band gap as temperature increases in the structure with the dynamic stereo-active lone pair but to a red shift in the structure with the static stereo-active lone pair. Furthermore, analyses of the temperature-dependent low-energy photoluminescence tails reveal that the strength of the e-ph interaction increases with increasing lone-pair activity, leading to a transition from a large polaron to a small polaron, which has significant influence on the emission spectra and charge carrier dynamics. Our results highlight the role of the lone-pair activity in controlling the band gap, phonon, and polaronic effect in LHPs and provide guidelines for optimizing the optoelectronic properties, especially for tin-based and germanium-based halide perovskites, where stereo-active lone pairs are more prominent than their lead counterparts.

Phonon-Mediated Slow Hot Carrier Dynamics in Lead-Free Cs3Bi2I9 Perovskite Single Crystal

In this report, we study the hot carrier cooling mechanism of the Cs3Bi2I9 single crystal by using femtosecond transient reflectance (fs-TR) spectroscopy. We find an unusual slow hot carrier cooling associated with longitudinal optical (LO) and coherent longitudinal acoustic phonons (CLAPs) emission during the deexcitation of the hot carriers. We posit the interplay between the hot-carriers and the LO and CLA phonons in subpicosecond to subnanosecond time scales, respectively, by analyzing the TR kinetics upon perturbation with excess energy. Furthermore, we measured the CLAPs propagation velocity in Cs3Bi2I9, the crystal, ranging from 1820 to 2000 ms-1. The elastic constants and frequency of Brillouin oscillations were estimated as 20.08 GPa and 14.66 GHz, respectively. Our discovery delivers new physical insights into how the hot carriers in Cs3Bi2I9 single crystal are coupled with a crystal lattice that controls the hot carrier dynamics.

Lead-free all-inorganic halide double perovskite materials for optoelectronic applications: progress, performance and design

The geometrical and electronic structures of all-inorganic halide double perovskites and their applications in optoelectronic devices are reviewed. Novel design methods are desirable to develop this type of perovskite with superior performance.
