Fluorination-Enhanced Ambient Stability and Electronic Tolerance of Black Phosphorus Quantum Dots

Renaissance of elemental phosphorus materials: properties, synthesis, and applications in sustainable energy and environment

The polymorphism of phosphorus-based materials has garnered much research interest, and the variable chemical bonding structures give rise to a variety of micro and nanostructures. Among the different types of materials containing phosphorus, elemental phosphorus materials (EPMs) constitute the foundation for the synthesis of related compounds. EPMs are experiencing a renaissance in the post-graphene era, thanks to recent advancements in the scaling-down of black phosphorus, amorphous red phosphorus, violet phosphorus, and fibrous phosphorus and consequently, diverse classes of low-dimensional sheets, ribbons, and dots of EPMs with intriguing properties have been produced. The nanostructured EPMs featuring tunable bandgaps, moderate carrier mobility, and excellent optical absorption have shown great potential in energy conversion, energy storage, and environmental remediation. It is thus important to have a good understanding of the differences and interrelationships among diverse EPMs, their intrinsic physical and chemical properties, the synthesis of specific structures, and the selection of suitable nanostructures of EPMs for particular applications. In this comprehensive review, we aim to provide an in-depth analysis and discussion of the fundamental physicochemical properties, synthesis, and applications of EPMs in the areas of energy conversion, energy storage, and environmental remediation. Our evaluations are based on recent literature on well-established phosphorus allotropes and theoretical predictions of new EPMs. The objective of this review is to enhance our comprehension of the characteristics of EPMs, keep abreast of recent advances, and provide guidance for future research of EPMs in the fields of chemistry and materials science.

Arginine-modified black phosphorus quantum dots with dual excited states for enhanced electrochemiluminescence in bioanalysis

The electrochemiluminescence (ECL) is generally emitted via radiative transition of singlet or triplet excited state (S₁ or T₁). Herein, an ECL mechanism with the transitions of both S₁ and T₁ of black phosphorus quantum dots (BPQDs) is found, and an arginine (Arg) modification strategy is proposed to passivate the surface oxidation defects of BPQDs, which could modulate the excited states for enhancing the ECL efficiency of BPQDs. The Arg modification leads to greater spatial overlap of highest and lowest occupied molecular orbitals, and spectral shift of radiative transitions, and improves the stability of anion radical of BPQDs. To verify the application of the proposed mechanism, it is used to construct a sensitive method for conveniently evaluating the inhibiting efficiency of cyclo-arginine-glycine-aspartic acid-d-tyrosine-lysine to cell surface integrin by using Arg containing peptide modified BPQDs as signal tag. The dual excited states mediated ECL emitters provide a paradigm for adjustable ECL generation and extend the application of ECL analysis.

Light-induced tumor theranostics based on chemical-exfoliated borophene

Among 2D materials (Xenes) which are at the forefront of research activities, borophene, is an exciting new entry due to its uniquely varied optical, electronic, and chemical properties in many polymorphic forms with widely varying band gaps including the lightest 2D metallic phase. In this paper, we used a simple selective chemical etching to prepare borophene with a strong near IR light-induced photothermal effect. The photothermal efficiency is similar to plasmonic Au nanoparticles, with the added benefit of borophene being degradable due to electron deficiency of boron. We introduce this selective chemical etching process to obtain ultrathin and large borophene nanosheets (thickness of ~4 nm and lateral size up to ~600 nm) from the precursor of AlB₂. We also report first-time observation of a selective Acid etching behavior showing HCl etching of Al to form a residual B lattice, while HF selectively etches B to yield an Al lattice. We demonstrate that through surface modification with polydopamine (PDA), a biocompatible smart delivery nanoplatform of B@PDA can respond to a tumor environment, exhibiting an enhanced cellular uptake efficiency. We demonstrate that borophene can be more suitable for safe photothermal theranostic of thick tumor using deep penetrating near IR light compared to gold nanoparticles which are not degradable, thus posing long-term toxicity concerns. With about 40 kinds of borides, we hope that our work will open door to more discoveries of this top-down selective etching approach for generating borophene structures with rich unexplored thermal, electronic, and optical properties for many other technological applications.

Multifunctional SERS chip mediated by black phosphorus@gold-silver nanocomposites inserted in bilayer membrane for in-situ detection and degradation of hazardous materials

Self-cleaning surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates dependent on versatile two-dimensional semiconductors offer an efficient channel for the sensitive monitoring and timely degradation of hazardous molecules. Herein, a kind of sophisticated SERS-active nanocomposites was developed by incorporating Au-Ag nanoparticles onto black phosphorus (BP) nanosheets via photo-induced self-reduction. Combining the substantial electromagnetic "hot spots" triggered by bimetallic plasma coupling effect and the efficient charge transfer from BP to probe molecules, the proposed nanocomposites featured attractive SERS enhancement, facilitating a limit of detection down to 4.5 × 10^-10 M. Attributed to the remarkable restriction of electron-hole recombination stemming from "Schottky contact", the photocatalytic activity of BP was prominently boosted, demonstrating a complete degradation time as short as 65 min. Furthermore, the disgusting instability of BP was considerably hindered by inserting the nanocomposites into various bilayer matrices with diverse hardness and viscosity inspired by cling film principle. Moreover, a significantly elevated collection rate high to 93.1% for in-situ detection was also achieved by the as-manufactured flexible SERS chips based on tape. This study illustrates a clear perspective for the development of versatile BP-based SERS chips which might facilitate sensitive analysis and treatment of perilous contaminants in complicated real-life scenarios.

Nanocomposite hydrogels for biomedical applications

Nanomaterials' unique structures at the nanometer level determine their incredible functions, and based on this, they can be widely used in the field of nanomedicine. However, nanomaterials do possess disadvantages that cannot be ignored, such as burst release, rapid elimination, and poor bioadhesion. Hydrogels are scaffolds with three‐dimensional structures, and they exhibit good biocompatibility and drug release capacity. Hydrogels are also associated with disadvantages for biomedical applications such as poor anti‐tumor capability, weak bioimaging capability, limited responsiveness, and so on. Incorporating nanomaterials into the 3D hydrogel network through physical or chemical covalent action may be an effective method to avoid their disadvantages. In nanocomposite hydrogel systems, multifunctional nanomaterials often work as the function core, giving the hydrogels a variety of properties (such as photo‐thermal conversion, magnetothermal conversion, conductivity, targeting tumor, etc.). While, hydrogels can effectively improve the retention effect of nanomaterials and make the nanoparticles have good plasticity to adapt to various biomedical applications (such as various biosensors). Nanocomposite hydrogel systems have broad application prospects in biomedicine. In this review, we comprehensively summarize and discuss the most recent advances of nanomaterials composite hydrogels in biomedicine, including drug and cell delivery, cancer treatment, tissue regeneration, biosensing, and bioimaging, and we also briefly discussed the current situation of their commoditization in biomedicine.

Stability and passivation of 2D group VA elemental materials: black phosphorus and beyond

Since the successful isolation of graphene in 2004, two-dimensional (2D) materials have become one of the focuses in material science owing to their extraordinary physical and chemical properties. In particular, 2D group VA elemental materials exhibit fascinating thickness-dependent band structures. Unfortunately, the well-known instability issue hinders their fundamental researches and practical applications. In this review, we first discuss the degradation mechanism of black phosphorus (BP), a most studied group VA material. Next, we summarize the methods to enhance BP stability with the focus of multifunctional passivation. Finally, we briefly discuss the protection strategies of other emerging group VA materials in recent years. This review provides insight for the degradation mechanism and protecting strategy for 2D group VA elements materials, which will promote their potential applications in electronics, optoelectronics, and biomedicine.

Phosphorene quantum dots: synthesis, properties and catalytic applications

Phosphorene quantum dots (PQDs) belong to a new class of zero-dimensional functional nanostructures with unique physicochemical and surface properties in comparison with few-layer phosphorene and other 2D analogues. Tunable band gap as a function of number of layers, ease of passivation and high carrier mobility of PQDs have attracted considerable attention in catalysis research due to which spectacular progress has been made in PQD research over the last few years. PQDs are now considered as promising catalytic materials for electrocatalytic water splitting and nitrogen reduction, lithium-sulfur batteries, solar light-driven energy devices and biocatalysis, either in pristine form or as an active component for constructing heterostructures with other 2D materials. In the light of these recent advances, it is worthwhile to review and consolidate PQD research in catalytic applications to understand the challenges ahead and suggest possible solutions. In this review, we systematically summarize various synthetic strategies including ultrasonic and electrochemical exfoliation, solvothermal treatment, blender breaking, milling, crushing and pulsed laser irradiation. Furthermore, the physiochemical properties of PQDs are discussed based on both experimental and theoretical perspectives. The potential applications of PQDs in catalysis with special emphasis on photocatalysis (solar light-driven energy devices) and electrocatalysis (oxygen evolution reactions and hydrogen evolution reactions) -are critically discussed along with the present status, challenges and future perspectives.

Synthesis and stabilization of black phosphorus and phosphorene: recent progress and perspectives

Two-dimensional black phosphorus (BP) has triggered tremendous research interest owing to its unique crystal structure, high carrier mobility, and tunable direct bandgap. Preparation of few-layer BP with high quality and stability is very important for its related research and applications in biomedicine, electronics, and optoelectronics. In this review, the synthesis methods of BP, including the preparation of bulk BP crystal which is an important raw material for preparing few-layer BP, the popular top-down methods, and some direct growth strategies of few-layer BP are comprehensively overviewed. Then chemical ways to enhance the stability of few-layer BP are concretely introduced. Finally, we propose a selection rule of preparation methods of few-layer BP according to the requirement of specific BP properties for different applications. We hope this review would bring some insight for future researches on BP and contributes to the acceleration of BP's commercial progress.

Black Phosphorus/Polymers: Status and Challenges

As a newly emerged mono-elemental nanomaterial, black phosphorus (BP) has been widely investigated for its fascinating physical properties, including layer-dependent tunable band gap (0.3-1.5 eV), high ON/OFF ratio (10⁴ ), high carrier mobility (10³ cm² V^-1 s^-1 ), excellent mechanical resistance, as well as special in-plane anisotropic optical, thermal, and vibrational characteristics. However, the instability caused by chemical degradation of its surface has posed a severe challenge for its further applications. A focused BP/polymer strategy has more recently been developed and implemented to hurdle this issue, so at present BP/polymers have been developed that exhibit enhanced stability, as well as outstanding optical, thermal, mechanical, and electrical properties. This has promoted researchers to further explore the potential applications of black phosphorous. In this review, the preparation processes and the key properties of BP/polymers are reviewed, followed by a detailed account of their diversified applications, including areas like optoelectronics, bio-medicine, and energy storage. Finally, in accordance with the current progress, the prospective challenges and future directions are highlighted and discussed.

Recent advances in the development of nanomedicines for the treatment of ischemic stroke

Ischemic stroke is still a serious threat to human life and health, but there are few therapeutic options available to treat stroke because of limited blood-brain penetration. The development of nanotechnology may overcome some of the problems related to traditional drug development. In this review, we focus on the potential applications of nanotechnology in stroke. First, we will discuss the main molecular pathological mechanisms of ischemic stroke to develop a targeted strategy. Second, considering the important role of the blood-brain barrier in stroke treatment, we also delve mechanisms by which the blood-brain barrier protects the brain, and the reasons why the therapeutics must pass through the blood-brain barrier to achieve efficacy. Lastly, we provide a comprehensive review related to the application of nanomaterials to treat stroke, including liposomes, polymers, metal nanoparticles, carbon nanotubes, graphene, black phosphorus, hydrogels and dendrimers. To conclude, we will summarize the challenges and future prospects of nanomedicine-based stroke treatments.

Antipathogenic properties and applications of low-dimensional materials

A major health concern of the 21st century is the rise of multi-drug resistant pathogenic microbial species. Recent technological advancements have led to considerable opportunities for low-dimensional materials (LDMs) as potential next-generation antimicrobials. LDMs have demonstrated antimicrobial behaviour towards a variety of pathogenic bacterial and fungal cells, due to their unique physicochemical properties. This review provides a critical assessment of current LDMs that have exhibited antimicrobial behaviour and their mechanism of action. Future design considerations and constraints in deploying LDMs for antimicrobial applications are discussed. It is envisioned that this review will guide future design parameters for LDM-based antimicrobial applications.

Halogen Functionalization in the 2D Material Flatland: Strategies, Properties, and Applications

Given the electronegativity and bonding environment of halogen elements, halogenation (i.e., fluorination, chlorination, bromination, and iodination) serves as a versatile strategy for chemical modifications of materials. The combination of halogens and 2D materials has triggered extensive interests since the first report on graphene fluorination in 2008. Subsequently, scholars consistently conduct pre-, in-process, or posthalogenation modifications of emerging 2D materials to achieve desired properties and broad device applications. They also continuously explore the role of halogens in 2D material functionalization. The multiple advantages introduced by halogen decoration make 2D materials outstanding from each subclass. In this review, an overall retrospect is provided on the research advances in the area of 2D material halogenation, including experimental halogenation strategies, halogen-triggered novel physics and properties, and advanced applications across the studied objects. Future research directions in this area are also proposed.

Progress in the therapeutic applications of polymer-decorated black phosphorus and black phosphorus analog nanomaterials in biomedicine

Wonderful black phosphorus (BP) and some BP analogs (BPAs) have been increasingly studied for their biomedical applications owing to their fascinating properties and biodegradability, but opportunities and challenges have always coexisted in their study. Poor stability upon exposure to the natural environment is the major obstacle hampering their in vivo applications. BP/polymer and BPAs/polymer nanocomposites can not only efficiently prevent their oxidation and aggregation but also exhibit "biological activity" due to synergistic effects. In this review, we briefly describe the synthesis methods and stability strategies of BP/polymer and BPAs/polymer. Then, advances pertaining to their exciting therapeutic applications in various fields are systematically introduced, such as cancer therapy (phototherapy, drug delivery, and synergistic immunotherapy), bone regeneration, and neurogenesis. Some challenges for future clinical trials and possible directions for further study are finally discussed.

Black phosphorus-based 2D materials for bone therapy

Since their discovery, Black Phosphorus (BP)-based nanomaterials have received extensive attentions in the fields of electromechanics, optics and biomedicine, due to their remarkable properties and excellent biocompatibility. The most essential feature of BP is that it is composed of a single phosphorus element, which has a high degree of homology with the inorganic components of natural bone, therefore it has a full advantage in the treatment of bone defects. This review will first introduce the source, physicochemical properties, and degradation products of BP, then introduce the remodeling process of bone, and comprehensively summarize the progress of BP-based materials for bone therapy in the form of hydrogels, polymer membranes, microspheres, and three-dimensional (3D) printed scaffolds. Finally, we discuss the challenges and prospects of BP-based implant materials in bone immune regulation and outlook the future clinical application.

Advancing Applications of Black Phosphorus and BP-Analog Materials in Photo/Electrocatalysis through Structure Engineering and Surface Modulation

Black phosphorus (BP), an emerging 2D material semiconductor material, exhibits unique properties and promising application prospects for photo/electrocatalysis. However, the applications of BP in photo/electrocatalysis are hampered by the instability as well as low catalysis efficiency. Recently, tremendous efforts have been dedicated toward modulating its intrinsic structure, electronic property, and charge separation for enhanced photo/electrocatalytic performance through structure engineering. Simultaneously, the search for new substitute materials that are BP-analogous is ongoing. Herein, the latest theoretical and experimental progress made in the structural/surface engineering strategies and advanced applications of BP and BP-analog materials in relation to photo/electrocatalysis are extensively explored, and a presentation of the future opportunities and challenges of the materials is included at the end.

In Situ Cleaning and Fluorination of Black Phosphorus for Enhanced Performance of Transistors with High Stability

Most two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors suffer from intrinsic instability under ambient conditions, especially 2D black phosphorus (BP). Although much effort has been made to study the passivation of 2D materials against corrosion by oxygen and water molecules, facile and effective passivation with long-term stability is still challenging; in particular, selective passivation, which is critical for integration into nanoelectronics, is still lacking. Here, we develop a novel passivation route for BP using a fluorinated self-assembled thin film of PFSA (perfluorosulfonic acid, PFSA), where the surface modifier with high hydrophobicity on BP presents extremely stable characteristics over five months under ambient conditions. Moreover, we report for the first time in situ cleaning and selective fluorination of only BP flakes on a SiO₂/Si substrate by a spin-coating process followed by ultrasonication, which was attributed to the formation of P-F covalent bonds on the BP surface. Selectively fluorinated BP shows not only enhanced stability in air but also electrical properties of the BP field-effect transistor (FET), with the on-current of the BP FET increasing and presenting enhanced carrier mobility (125 cm² V^-1 s^-1) and on/off ratio (10⁴). This significant finding sheds light on fabricating vertical 2D heterostructures to realize high performance and reliability with versatile 2D materials. This work demonstrates an emerging passivation approach for long-term stability together with superior electrical properties, which paves the way for integrating 2D semiconductors into critical channel materials in FETs that are favorable for next-generation digital logic circuits.

Recent advances in solution-processed photodetectors based on inorganic and hybrid photo-active materials

Due to their excellent and tailorable optoelectronic performance, low cost, facile fabrication, and compatibility with flexible substrates, solution-processed inorganic and hybrid photo-active materials have attracted extensive interest for next-generation photodetector applications. This review gives a comprehensive compilation of solution-processed photodetectors. The basic structures of the device and important parameters of photodetectors will be firstly summarized. Then the development of various solution processing technologies containing solution synthesis and liquid phase film-forming processes for the preparation of semiconductor films is described. From the materials science point of view, we give a comprehensive overview about the current status of solution processed semiconductor materials including inorganic and hybrid photo-active materials for the application of photodetectors. Moreover, challenges and future trends in the field of solution-processed photodetectors are proposed.

Recent Progress of Two-Dimensional Thermoelectric Materials

Thermoelectric generators have attracted a wide research interest owing to their ability to directly convert heat into electrical power. Moreover, the thermoelectric properties of traditional inorganic and organic materials have been significantly improved over the past few decades. Among these compounds, layered two-dimensional (2D) materials, such as graphene, black phosphorus, transition metal dichalcogenides, IVA-VIA compounds, and MXenes, have generated a large research attention as a group of potentially high-performance thermoelectric materials. Due to their unique electronic, mechanical, thermal, and optoelectronic properties, thermoelectric devices based on such materials can be applied in a variety of applications. Herein, a comprehensive review on the development of 2D materials for thermoelectric applications, as well as theoretical simulations and experimental preparation, is presented. In addition, nanodevice and new applications of 2D thermoelectric materials are also introduced. At last, current challenges are discussed and several prospects in this field are proposed.

Versatile Applications of Metal Single-Atom @ 2D Material Nanoplatforms

Recently, emerging 2D material-supported metal single-atom catalysts (SACs) are receiving enormous attention in heterogeneous catalysis. Due to their well-defined, precisely located metal centers, unique metal-support interaction and identical coordination environment, these catalysts serve as excellent models for understanding the fundamental issues in catalysis as well as exhibiting intriguing practical applications. Understanding the correlations between metal-support combinations and the catalytic performance at the atomic level can be achieved on the SACs@2D materials nanoplatforms. Herein, recent advances of metal SACs on various types of 2D materials are reviewed, especially their exciting applications in the fields of chemicals, energy, and the environment. Based on the summary and perspectives, this work should contribute to the rational design of perfect metal SACs with versatile properties.

Biocompatible Two-Dimensional Titanium Nanosheets for Multimodal Imaging-Guided Cancer Theranostics

Photothermal therapy (PTT) based on two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials has shown significant potential in cancer treatment. However, developing 2D nanomaterial-based theranostic agents with good biocompatibility and high therapeutic efficiency remains a key challenge. Bulk titanium (Ti) has been widely used as biomedical materials for their reputable biocompatibility, whereas nanosized Ti with a biological function remains unexplored. In this work, the 2D Ti nanosheets (NSs) are successfully exfoliated from nonlayer bulk Ti and utilized as an efficient theranostic nanoplatform for dual-modal computed tomography/photoacoustic (CT/PA) imaging-navigated PTT. Besides the excellent biocompatibility obtained by TiNSs as expected, they are found to show strong absorption ability with an extinction coefficient of 20.8 L g^-1 cm^-1 and high photothermal conversion ability with an efficiency of 61.5% owing to localized surface plasmon resonances, which exceeds most of other well-known photothermal agents, making it quite promising for PTT against cancer. Furthermore, the metallic property and light-heat-acoustic transformation endow 2D Ti with the strong CT/PA imaging signal and efficient cancer therapy, simultaneously. This work highlights the enormous potential of nanosized Ti in both the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. As a paradigm, this study also paves a new avenue for the elemental transition-metal-based cancer theranostics.

Direct covalent modification of black phosphorus quantum dots with conjugated polymers for information storage

It has long been recognized that a small switching bias window, which is defined as the difference between the switch-on and switch-off voltages (Δ|VON - VOFF|), and a high ON/OFF current ratio would be greatly favorable to reduce the power consumption of memory devices and to decrease the information misreading rate in digital memory devices. In contrast to two-dimensional BP nanosheets, zero dimensional BP quantum dots (BPQDs) show more exciting physical and chemical properties. By using newly synthesized poly[(9,9-dioctyl-9H-fluorene)-alt-(4-(9H-carbazol-9-yl)aniline)] (PFCz-NH2) as the synthetic precursor, a highly soluble diazotated polymer, PFCz-N2+BF4-, was successfully synthesized and used to react with BPQDs under aqueous conditions to give the first conjugated polymer covalently functionalized BPQDs (PFCz-g-BPQDs). The as-prepared Al/PFCz-g-BPQDs/ITO device exhibits excellent nonvolatile rewritable memory performance, with a large ON/OFF current ratio (>107) and low switch-on/off voltages (-0.89/+1.95 V). In contrast, the Al/PFCz-NH2 : BPQDs blend/ITO device also shows a rewritable memory effect, but its ON/OFF current ratio and Δ|VON - VOFF| value are found to be 3 × 103 and 5.47 (Δ|+2.53-2.94|), respectively. This work, which offers an easy one-step strategy for direct covalent functionalization of BPQDs, opens a way to explore more applications of BPQDs.

2D group-VA fluorinated antimonene: synthesis and saturable absorption

A new derivative of antimonene named fluorinated antimonene was synthesized using the method of ionic liquid-assisted electrochemical exfoliation and synchronous fluorination. Passive Q-switched pulses were produced from a Nd:LuAG laser with fluorinated antimonene, having a pulse width of 326.7 ns and a repetition rate of 733.1 kHz demonstrating its potential application as a saturable absorber. Density functional theory calculations revealed that compared with pure antimonene with an indirect bandgap, fluorinated antimonene exhibits a direct bandgap modulated by the fluorination degree showing that fluorinated antimonene would be applied as optical devices beyond its application as a saturable absorber.
