Transparent Conducting Films Based on Carbon Nanotubes: Rational Design toward the Theoretical Limit

Recent advance of high-quality perovskite nanostructure and its application in flexible photodetectors

Flexible photodetectors (PDs) have garnered increasing attention for their potential applications in diverse fields, including weather monitoring, smart robotics, smart textiles, electronic eyes, wearable biomedical monitoring devices, and so on. Notably, perovskite nanostructures have emerged as a promising material for flexible PDs due to their distinctive features, such as a large optical absorption coefficient, tunable band gap, extended photoluminescence decay time, high carrier mobility, low defect density, long exciton diffusion lengths, strong self-trapped effect, good mechanical flexibility, and facile synthesis methods. In this review, we first introduce various synthesis methods for perovskite nanostructures and elucidate their corresponding optical and electrical properties, encompassing quantum dots, nanocrystals, nanowires, nanobelts, nanosheets, single-crystal thin films, polycrystalline thin films, and nanostructured arrays. Furthermore, the working mechanism and key performance parameters of optoelectronic devices are summarized. The review also systematically compiles recent advancements in flexible PDs based on various nanostructured perovskites. Finally, we present the current challenges and prospects for the development of perovskite nanostructures-based flexible PDs.

Flexible Transparent Electrode Based on Ag Nanowires: Ag Nanoparticles Co-Doped System for Organic Light-Emitting Diodes

Flexible organic light-emitting diodes (FOLEDs) have promising potential for future wearable applications because of their exceptional mechanical flexibility. Silver nanowire (Ag NW) networks are the most promising candidates to replace indium tin oxide (ITO), which is limited by its poor bendability. In this study, three different methods including methanol impregnation, argon plasma treatment, and ultraviolet radiation were used to reduce the junction resistance of Ag NWs to optimize the flexible transparent electrodes (FTEs); which were prepared using Ag NWs and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene): poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT: PSS). Then, the optoelectronic properties of the FTEs were further improved by using a co-doped system of silver nanowires and silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs), the structure of which consisted of PET/Ag NWs: Ag NPs/PEDOT: PSS/DMSO. The largest FOM value of 1.42 × 10-2 ohm-1 and a low sheet resistance value of 13.86 ohm/sq were obtained using the optimized FTEs. The prepared FOLED based on the optimized FTEs had a luminous efficiency of 6.04 cd/A and a maximum EQE of 1.92%, and exhibited no observed decline in efficiency when reaching maximum luminance. After 500 bending tests, the luminance still reached 82% of the original value. It is demonstrated that the FTEs prepared via the co-doped system have excellent optoelectronic properties as well as high mechanical stability.

Impact of ITO layer on the spatial optical distribution of semipolar (20-21) InGaN/GaN multiple quantum wells with surface morphology

Textured surface with micro-facets have been widely observed in semipolar and nonpolar III-nitride heterostructures, mainly resulted from the anisotropic growth rate in the growth plane. Polarization and the intensity distribution of surface emissions are both affected by the surface morphology. The indium tin oxide (ITO) layer, serving as the current spreading layer, are usually employed to enhance the current injection efficiency and light extraction efficiency in III-nitride emitters. For semipolar orientation, the introduction of an ITO layer could weaken the anisotropic optical property, especially for the spatial intensity distribution. This paper reports the influence of the ITO layer on the spatial intensity distribution of semipolar (20-21) InGaN/GaN multiple quantum wells. The intensity distribution could be shaped from a rectangular-like pattern to a circular-like pattern with the deposition of an ITO layer. The ITO layer allows more light along the [11-20] direction to emit out at a small angle with respect to the surface normal. By further increasing the ITO thickness, the influence of surface fluctuation of semipolar sample decreases, leading to an improvement in the proportion of the light at small angles and a slight decrease in the overall integrated intensity of whole far field. These results will help pave the way to high-performance semipolar emitters with great potential in general illumination and backlighting.

Flexible Transparent Conductive Electrodes: Unveiling Growth Mechanisms, Material Dimensions, Fabrication Methods, and Design Strategies

Flexible transparent conductive electrodes (FTCEs) constitute an indispensable component in state-of-the-art electronic devices, such as wearable flexible sensors, flexible displays, artificial skin, and biomedical devices, etc. This review paper offers a comprehensive overview of the fabrication techniques, growth modes, material dimensions, design, and their impacts on FTCEs fabrication. The growth modes, such as the "Stranski-Krastanov growth," "Frank-van der Merwe growth," and "Volmer-Weber growth" modes provide flexibility in fabricating FTCEs. Application of different materials including 0D, 1D, 2D, polymer composites, conductive oxides, and hybrid materials in FTCE fabrication, emphasizing their suitability in flexible devices are discussed. This review also delves into the design strategies of FTCEs, including microgrids, nanotroughs, nanomesh, nanowires network, and "kirigami"-inspired patterns, etc. The pros and cons associated with these materials and designs are also addressed appropriately. Considerations such as trade-offs between electrical conductivity and optical transparency or "figure of merit (FoM)," "strain engineering," "work function," and "haze" are also discussed briefly. Finally, this review outlines the challenges and opportunities in the current and future development of FTCEs for flexible electronics, including the improved trade-offs between optoelectronic parameters, novel materials development, mechanical stability, reproducibility, scalability, and durability enhancement, safety, biocompatibility, etc.

Role of Hydrogen in Ethylene-Based Synthesis of Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes

We examined the effect of hydrogen on the growth of single-walled carbon nanotubes in the aerosol (a specific case of the floating catalyst) chemical vapor deposition process using ethylene as a carbon source and ferrocene as a precursor for a Fe-based catalyst. With a comprehensive set of physical methods (UV-vis-NIR and Raman spectroscopies, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, differential mobility analysis, and four-probe sheet resistance measurements), we showed hydrogen to inhibit ethylene pyrolysis extending the window of synthesis parameters. Moreover, the detailed study at different temperatures allowed us to distinguish three different regimes for the hydrogen effect: pyrolysis suppression at low concentrations (I) followed by surface cleaning/activation promotion (II), and surface blockage/nanotube etching (III) at the highest concentrations. We believe that such a detailed study will help to reveal the complex role of hydrogen and contribute toward the synthesis of single-walled carbon nanotubes with detailed characteristics.

Transparent and Stretchable Electromagnetic Interference Shielding Film with Fence-like Aligned Silver Nanowire Conductive Network

Flexible transparent conductive electrodes (TCEs) that can be used as electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials have a great potential for use as electronic components in optical window and display applications. However, development of TCEs that display high shielding effectiveness (SE) and good stretchability for flexible electronic device applications has proven challenging. Herein, this study describes a stretchable polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)/silver nanowire (AgNW) TCE with a fence-like aligned conductive network that is fabricated via pre-stretching method. The fence-like AgNW network endowed the PDMS/AgNW film with excellent optoelectronic properties, i.e., low sheet resistance of 7.68 Ω sq^-1 at 73.7% optical transmittance, thus causing an effective EMI SE of 32.2 dB at X-band. More importantly, the fence-like aligned AgNW conductive network reveals a high stability toward tensile deformation, thus gives the PDMS/AgNW film stretch-stable conductivity and EMI shielding property in the strain range of 0-100%. Typically, the film can reserve ≈70% or 80% of its initial EMI SE when stretching at 100% strain or stretching/releasing (50% strain) for 128 cycles, respectively. Additionally, the film exhibits a low-voltage driven and stretchable Joule heating performance. With these overall performances, the PDMS/AgNW film should be well suited for use in flexible and stretchable optical electronic devices.

JA, Nasibulin AG. Bithiophene as a Sulfur-Based Promotor for the Synthesis of Carbon Nanotubes and Carbon-Carbon Composites

We assess bithiophene (C8H6S2) as a novel sulfur-based promotor for the growth of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) in the aerosol (floating catalyst) CVD method. Technologically suitable equilibrium vapor pressure and an excess of hydrocarbon residuals formed under its decomposition make bithiophene an attractive promoter for the production of carbon nanotubes in general and specifically for ferrocene-based SWCNT growth. Indeed, we detect a moderate enhancement in the carbon nanotube yield and a decrease in the equivalent sheet resistance of the films at a low bithiophene content, indicating the improvement of the product properties. Moreover, the relatively high concentrations and low temperature stability of bithiophene result in non-catalytical decomposition, leading to the formation of pyrolytic carbon deposits; the deposits appear as few-layer graphene structures. Thus, bithiophene pyrolysis opens a route for the cheap production of hierarchical composite thin films comprising carbon nanotubes and few-layer graphene, which might be of practical use for hierarchical adsorbents, protective membranes, or electrocatalysis.

Recent advances in conductive hydrogels: classifications, properties, and applications

Hydrogel-based conductive materials for smart wearable devices have attracted increasing attention due to their excellent flexibility, versatility, and outstanding biocompatibility. This review presents the recent advances in multifunctional conductive hydrogels for electronic devices. First, conductive hydrogels with different components are discussed, including pure single network hydrogels based on conductive polymers, single network hydrogels with additional conductive additives (i.e., nanoparticles, nanowires, and nanosheets), double network hydrogels based on conductive polymers, and double network hydrogels with additional conductive additives. Second, conductive hydrogels with a variety of functionalities, including self-healing, super toughness, self-growing, adhesive, anti-swelling, antibacterial, structural color, hydrophobic, anti-freezing, shape memory and external stimulus responsiveness are introduced in detail. Third, the applications of hydrogels in flexible devices are illustrated (i.e., strain sensors, supercapacitors, touch panels, triboelectric nanogenerator, bioelectronic devices, and robot). Next, the current challenges facing hydrogels are summarized. Finally, an imaginative but reasonable outlook is given, which aims to drive further development in the future.

All-atmospheric fabrication of Ag-Cu core-shell nanowire transparent electrodes with Haacke figure of merit >600 × 10-3 Ω-1

Transparent conducting electrodes (TCEs) are essential components in devices such as touch screens, smart windows, and photovoltaics. Metal nanowire networks are promising next-generation TCEs, but best-performing examples rely on expensive metal catalysts (palladium or platinum), vacuum processing, or transfer processes that cannot be scaled. This work demonstrates a metal nanowire TCE fabrication process that focuses on high performance and simple fabrication. Here we combined direct and plating metallization processes on electrospun nanowires. We first directly metallize silver nanowires using reactive silver ink. The silver catalyzes subsequent copper plating to produce Ag-Cu core-shell nanowires and eliminates nanowire junction resistances. The process allows for tunable transmission and sheet resistance properties by adjusting electrospinning and plating time. We demonstrate state-of-the-art, low-haze TCEs using an all-atmospheric process with sheet resistances of 0.33 Ω sq^-1 and visible light transmittances of 86% (including the substrate), leading to a Haacke figure of merit of 652 × 10^-3 Ω^-1. The core-shell nanowire electrode also demonstrates high chemical and bending durability.
