Abstract
PURPOSE To (1) describe secular trends in gross motor coordination (GMC) scores by sex and age; (2) investigate GMC trends adjusted for concomitant secular trends in height, weight, and overall physical fitness; and (3) examine trends in children's frequencies within different GMC categories. METHOD The sample comprises 1562 Peruvian children (690 in 2009 and 872 in 2019), aged 6-11 years, from Junín (a high-altitude region). GMC was assessed with the KörperkoordinationsTest für Kinder. Physical fitness was assessed with handgrip strength, standing long jump, and shuttle-run test. Height and weight were measured with standardized protocols. Analysis of variance, covariance, and logistic regression were used. RESULTS A negative secular trend in GMC (based on raw scores) for boys and girls aged 6-8 years was observed. However, a positive trend was observed at 11 years of age but only in boys. Finally, there were no significant changes in the likelihood of children having below-normal GMC from 2009 to 2019. CONCLUSIONS Secular trends in GMC were negative in Peruvian children, especially at 6-8 years of age. Further, body size and physical fitness trends did not affect the negative secular trend. A high prevalence of children had below-normal GMC in both 2009 and 2019.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Birth weight is considered an important marker of inadequate maternal nutrition, and it is a critical indicator of the newborn's health and development. OBJECTIVE This study evaluated the influence of low birth weight (LBW) on body composition in 7-10-year-old school children from Boane City-Mozambique. METHODS A total of 220 children (female = 122 and male = 98) were divided into two groups according to their birth weight (LBW, n = 41; and normal birth weight, NBW, n = 179). Anthropometric indicators of nutritional status were analyzed by the indices weight-for-age, height-for-age, BMI-for-age, and weight-for-height. RESULTS LBW children showed reduced skinfolds, and weight-for-height when compared to NBW children. Birth weight was positively associated with all anthropometric variables, except for BMI, which was not associated with any other variable. The r2 value ranged from .09 (weight-for-age) to .72 (height-for-age). For body composition variables, older children had higher fat mass (β = .26; 95% CI = 0.05-0.48) and fat-free mass (β = 1.10; 95% CI = 0.71-1.48), and boys had lower fat percentage (β = -3.49; 95% CI = -4.35 to -2.65) and fat mass (β = -.92; 95% CI = -1.31 to -0.55) than girls. Birth weight was also positively associated with fat-free mass. CONCLUSION LBW seems to influence some growth indicators of children living in Boane, however, current environmental factors seem to weaken this association. Our results suggest that public policies involving healthy nutrition and physical activity can reverse the effects of low weight in children from Boane.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Preterm infants often have poor short- and long-term growth. Kangaroo mother care supports short-term growth, but longer-term outcomes are unclear. METHODS This study analysed longitudinally collected routine clinical data from a South African cohort of preterm infants (born <37 weeks gestation) attending the outpatient follow-up clinic of a tertiary-level hospital (Tshwane District, South Africa) for 1 year between 2012 and 2019. At 1 year, small-for-gestational age (SGA) and appropriate-for-gestational age (AGA) infants were compared with regard to age-corrected anthropometric z-scores (weight-for-age [WAZ], length-for-age [LAZ], weight-for-length [WLZ] and BMI-for-age [BMIZ]) and rates of underweight (WAZ < -2), stunting (LAZ < -2), wasting (WLZ < -2) and overweight (BMIZ> + 2). Multiple regression analysis was used to investigate associations between maternal/infant characteristics and rates of underweight, stunting, wasting and overweight. RESULTS At 1 year, compared with AGA infants (n = 210), SGA infants (n = 111) had lower WAZ (-1.26 ± 1.32 vs. -0.22 ± 1.24, p < 0.001), LAZ (-1.50 ± 1.11 vs. -0.60 ± 1.06, p < 0.001), WLZ (-0.66 ± 1.31 vs. 0.11 ± 1.24, p < 0.001) and BMIZ (-0.55 ± 1.31 vs. 1.06 ± 1.23, p < 0.001), despite larger WAZ gains from birth (+0.70 ± 1.30 vs. +0.05 ± 1.30, p < 0.001). SGA infants had significantly more stunting (34.2% vs. 9.1%; p < 0.001), underweight (31.2% vs. 7.2%; p < 0.001) and wasting (12.6% vs. 4.3%, p = 0.012), with no difference in overweight (4.5% vs. 7.7%, p = 0.397). In multiple regression analysis, birth weight-for-GA z-score more consistently predicted 1-year malnutrition than SGA. CONCLUSION Preterm-born SGA infants remain more underweight, stunted and wasted than their preterm-born AGA peers at 1 year, despite greater WAZ gains. Interventions for appropriate catch-up growth especially for SGA preterm infants are needed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Placental insufficiency negatively impacts fetal growth and body composition (BC), potentially affecting lifelong health. Placental insufficiency, detectable as an abnormal umbilical artery resistance index (UmA-RI) on Doppler ultrasonography, is highly prevalent in otherwise healthy South African pregnant women. Appropriate intervention reduces stillbirth and perinatal death, but research on long-term outcomes of surviving infants is lacking. OBJECTIVES To describe and compare anthropometry and BC during the first 2 y of life in a cohort of term-born infants with normal and abnormal prenatal UmA-RI. METHODS Term-born infants (n = 81; n = 55 normal, n = 26 abnormal UmA-RI on third trimester Doppler screening) were followed up at 8-time points until age 2 y. Anthropometric measurements were taken, and FFM and FM were assessed by deuterium dilution. Age- and sex-specific z-scores were calculated for anthropometric indices, FM, FFM, FM index (FMI), and FFM index (FFMI) using appropriate reference data. Anthropometry and BC of infants with normal and abnormal UmA-RI were compared using an independent t-test or Mann-Whitney test. RESULTS At most ages, group mean z-scores were <0 for length-for-age and FM and >0 for weight-for-length and FFM. Compared with infants with normal UmA-RI, infants with abnormal UmA-RI had significantly lower weight-for-age z-scores at birth (-0.77 ± 0.75 compared with -0.30 ± 1.10, P = 0.026), ages 10 wk to 9 mo (-0.4 ± 0.87 to -0.2 ± 1.12 compared with 0.3 ± 0.85 to 0.6 ± 1.09; P = 0.007-0.017) and 18 mo (-0.6 ± 0.82 compared with 0.1 ± 1.18; P = 0.037); length-for-age z-scores at ages ≤14 wk (-1.3 ± 1.25 to -0.9 ± 0.87 compared with -0.2 ± 1.04 to -0.1 ± 1.00; P = 0.004-0.021); and FFM-for-age z-scores at ages ≤9 mo (-0.1 ± 0.82 to 0.7 ± 0.71 compared with 0.7 ± 1.00 to 1.3 ± 0.85; P = 0.002-0.028). FFMI, percentage FFM, FM, percentage FM, and FMI showed no consistent significant differences. CONCLUSIONS Infants with abnormal UmA-RI had lower weight-for-age and length-for-age z-scores, particularly at younger ages, with proportionally lower FFM but no consistent differences in percentage FFM and FFMI. Abstract
BACKGROUND Children's physical growth (PG) and body composition (BC) can be influenced by birth weight and type of delivery. AIM To longitudinally analyze the dynamics of PG and BC of children from 5 to 9 years; to investigate the inter-individual differences according to age, sex, BW, and type of delivery across the following years of the study. SUBJECTS AND METHODS A total of 1236 children (597 boys) were evaluated at 5-years of age and followed annually until 9-years. PG and BC measurements were evaluated. Multilevel modeling was used. RESULTS Annual increments were observed (p < .001). Girls presented lower height and fat-free-mass but higher %BF (p < .001). Distinct trajectories between the sexes were observed for height (p < .001). Low-birth-weight children presented lower height, body mass, and fat-free-mass (p < .001), but the interaction between velocity of growth and BC was significant only in height (p < .05). Children born by had lower height, body mass, and %BF, and gained less body mass per year than those born by vaginal delivery (p < .05). Significant inter-individual differences were observed at 5-years of age and in their trajectories, except for fat-free-mass (p < .01). CONCLUSION There are differences in the dynamics of PG and BC, low-birth-weight and type of delivery influence the dynamics of PG during this interval of ages.

Abstract
This study investigated the associations between biological and environmental factors and gross-motor coordination (GMC) in Peruvian children and adolescents. The sample comprised 7401 boys and girls, aged 6-14 years, recruited from three geographical regions: sea-level, Amazon and high-altitude. Biological variables included age, sex, height, BMI, physical fitness, stunting, and maturational status. Environmental influences included geographical region and school characteristics. Gross-motor coordination was tested with the Körperkoordinationstest für Kinder and the data analyzed by multilevel logistic regression. Results showed a high prevalence of below normal GMC scores. Sex, age, geographical area, biological maturation, BMI (normal versus overweight/obesity), and stunting were all significant predictors of GMC. There was also an interaction between age, sex, and geographical area indicating that older girls who lived at sea-level and high-altitude were more likely to display below normal GMC scores. The school context was less important in predicting GMC problems than the interplay between biological characteristics and geographical region. These results suggest that early identification, as well as educational and pediatric care interventions, are of importance in reducing below normal GMC among Peruvian children and adolescents.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Birthweight (BW) has been associated with anthropometry, body composition and physical fitness during growth and development of children. However, less is known about the mediation effect of those variables on the relationship between BW and basal metabolic rate (BMR) in children. OBJECTIVE To analyse the mediation effect of anthropometry, body composition and physical fitness on the association between BW and BMR in children. METHODS In total, 499 children (254 boys, 245 girls) aged 7-10 years were included. Anthropometry (weight, height, head, waist and hip circumferences), body composition (skinfolds thickness, body fat percentage), physical fitness (handgrip strength, flexibility, muscular endurance, muscular explosive power, agility, running speed) and BMR were evaluated. The analyses were conducted by: single-mediator analysis (SMA) and multi-mediator analysis (MMA). RESULTS The SMA indicates height, head, waist and hip circumferences and handgrip strength as significant mediators of BW on BMR for boys and height, hip circumference and handgrip strength as significant mediators of BW on BMR for girls. In MMA for girls, there were significant indirect effects for height, hip circumference and handgrip strength, with 79.08% of percent mediation. For boys, the head and waist circumferences mediation had a significant indirect effect, with 83.37% of percent mediation. CONCLUSION The anthropometric variables associated with BW were body height, head, hip and waist circumferences for boys and body height and hip circumference for girls. The current study provides new evidence that height and handgrip strength during childhood mediated the relationship between BW and BMR.

Abstract
This study modelled children's gross motor coordination, investigated sex-differences and identified the effects of fixed and dynamic correlates on motor coordination development. A total of 344 Portuguese children (170 girls), from 6 age cohorts (5 to 9 years of age), were followed consecutively for three years (age range 5 to 11 years) using a mixed-longitudinal cohort design. Birth weight, hand dominance and socioeconomic status (SES) were identified. Gross motor coordination, body mass index, physical fitness (PF) and physical activity (PA) were assessed annually. A sequence of multilevel hierarchical linear models were developed. Model 1 found that age, age2, sex, sex-by-age and sex-by-age2 were significant predictors (p < 0.05) of gross motor coordination. Boys outperformed girls from 6 years of age onwards. Model 2 found a cohort effect (p < 0.05). Model 3 found that right handers were more coordinated (p < 0.05). When the confounders of body mass index, PF and PA were added to the model (Model 4) it was found that boys and girls had parallel trajectories in their gross motor coordination development. In conclusion children with increasing body mass index were less coordinated, while those who were stronger and more agile had steeper trajectories of gross motor coordination with age.
