Abstract
Surface-assisted fabrication of molecular network architectures has been a promising route to low-dimensional materials with unique physicochemical properties and functionalities. One versatile way in this field is the Ullmann coupling reaction of halogenated organic monomers on catalytically active metallic surfaces. In this work, using the coarse grained Monte Carlo simulations, we studied the on-surface self-assembly of metal-organic precursors preceding the covalent Ullman-type linkage of tetrahalogenated anthracene building blocks. To that end a series of positional isomers was examined and classified with respect to their ability of creation of extended network structures. Our simulations focused on the identification of basic types of self-assembly scenarios distinguishing enantiopure and racemic systems and producing periodic and aperiodic networks. The calculations carried out for selected tectons demonstrated wide possibilities of controlling porosity (e.g. pore size, shape, periodicity, chirality, heterogeneity) of the networks by suitable functionalization of the monomeric unit. The findings reported here can be helpful in rational designing of 2D polymeric networks with predefined structures and properties.

Abstract
Ligand-coordinated supported catalysts (LCSCs) are of growing interest for heterogeneous single-atom catalysis. Here, the effect of the choice of organic ligand on the activity and stability of TiO2 -supported single-atom Pt-ligand catalysts was investigated for ethylene hydrogenation. The activity of these catalysts showed a significant dependence on the choice of ligand and also correlated with coordination number for Pt-ligand and Pt-Cl- . Of the three ligands examined in this study, the one with the lowest Pt coordination number, 1,10-phenanthroline-5,6-dione (PDO), showed the lowest reaction temperature and highest reaction rate, likely due to those metal sites being more accessible to reactant adsorption. In-situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) experiments showed that the activity also correlated with good heterolytic dissociation of hydrogen, which was supported by OH/OD exchange experiments and was the rate-determining step of the hydrogenation reaction. In these in-situ XAS experiments up to 190 °C, the supported Pt-ligand catalyst showed excellent stability against structural and chemical change. Instead of Pt, the PDO ligand could be coordinated with Ir on TiO2 to form Ir LCSCs that showed slow activation by loss of Ir-Cl bonds, then excellent stability in the hydrogenation of ethylene. These results provide the chance to engineer ligand-coordinated supported catalysts at the single-atom catalyst level by the choice of ligand and enable new applications at relatively high temperature.

Abstract
On-surface synthesis (OSS) involving relatively high energy barriers remains challenging due to a typical dilemma: firm molecular anchor is required to prevent molecular desorption upon the reaction, whereas sufficient lateral mobility is crucial for subsequent coupling and assembly. By locking the molecular precursors on the substrate then unlocking them during the reaction, we present a strategy to address this challenge. High-yield synthesis based on well-defined decarboxylation, intermediate transition, and hexamerization is demonstrated, resulting in an extended and ordered network exclusively composed of the newly synthesized macrocyclic compound. Thanks to the steric hindrance of its maleimide group, we attain a preferential selection of the coupling. This work unlocks a promising path to enrich the reaction types and improve the coupling selectivity hence the structual homogeneity of the final product for OSS.

Abstract
Hydrogen plays important roles in the on-surface synthesis of carbon-based materials in ultra-high vacuum. The complex interplay between hydrogen and surface-adsorbed polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) is tracked by in situ time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) combined with isotope labeling. In situ deuterium labeling of prototypical PAHs, coronene (CR) and 7-armchair graphene nanoribbons (GNRs), on Au(111) is achieved by annealing either in D2 gas or in the vapor of perdeuterio-acenaphthene. By following the mass spectra of in situ deuterated CR mixed with hydrogen-CR, it is demonstrated that PAHs adsorbed at hot Au(111) surfaces continuously exchange hydrogen atoms. Also, D2 present during the Ullmann coupling step leads to incorporation of deuterium and to shorter GNRs.

Abstract
Cumulene compounds are notoriously difficult to prepare and study because their reactivity increases dramatically with the increasing number of consecutive double bonds. In this respect, the emerging field of on-surface synthesis provides exceptional opportunities because it relies on reactions on clean metal substrates under well-controlled ultrahigh-vacuum conditions. Here we report the on-surface synthesis of a polymer linked by cumulene-like bonds on a Au(111) surface via sequential thermally activated dehalogenative C-C coupling of a tribenzoazulene precursor equipped with two dibromomethylene groups. The structure and electronic properties of the resulting polymer with cumulene-like pentagon-pentagon and heptagon-heptagon connections have been investigated by means of scanning probe microscopy and spectroscopy methods and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, complemented by density functional theory calculations. Our results provide perspectives for the on-surface synthesis of cumulene-containing compounds, as well as protocols relevant to the stepwise fabrication of carbon-carbon bonds on surfaces.

Abstract
Ring/chain competition in oligomerization reactions represents a long‐standing topic of synthetic chemistry and was treated extensively for solution reactions but is not well‐understood for the two‐dimensional confinement of surface reactions. Here, the kinetic and thermodynamic principles of ring/chain competition in on‐surface synthesis are addressed by scanning tunneling microscopy, X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Monte Carlo simulations applied to azulene‐based organometallic oligomers on Cu(111). Analysis of experiments and simulations reveals how the ring/chain ratio can be controlled through variation of coverage and temperature. At room temperature, non‐equilibrium conditions prevail and kinetic control leads to preferential formation of the entropically favored chains. In contrast, high‐temperature equilibrium conditions are associated with thermodynamic control, resulting in increased yields of the energetically favored rings. The optimum conditions for ring formation include the lowest possible temperature within the regime of thermodynamic control and a low coverage. The general implications are discussed and compared to the solution case.

Abstract
Directing the self-assembly of organic building blocks with 2D templates has been a promising method to create molecular superstructures having unique physicochemical properties. In this work the on-surface self-assembly of simple ditopic functional molecules confined inside periodic nanotemplates was modeled by means of the lattice Monte Carlo simulation method. Two types of confinement, that is honeycomb porous networks and parallel grooves of controlled diameter and width were used in the calculations. Additionally, the effect of (pro)chirality of the adsorbing molecules on the outcome of the templated self-assembly was examined. To that end, enantiopure and racemic assemblies were studied and the resulting structures were identified and classified. The obtained findings demonstrated that suitable tuning of the structural parameters of the templates enables directing the self-assembly towards linear and cyclic aggregates with controlled size. Moreover, chiral resolution of the molecular conformers using honeycomb networks with adjusted pore size was found possible. Our theoretical predictions can be helpful in designing structured surfaces to direct self-assembly and polymerization of organic functional building blocks.

Abstract
This work reports the influence of molecular coverage in on-surface C-C-bond formation on reaction outcome. 6-Ethynyl-2-naphthoic acid (ENA) was chosen as organic component and Ag(111) as substrate. The alkyne moiety in ENA can either react by dimerization to ENA dimers (Glaser coupling or hydroalkynylation) or cyclotrimerization to generate a benzene core as connecting moiety. Dimer formation is preferred at high surface coverage whereas trimerization is the major reaction pathway at low coverage. Mechanistic studies are provided.

Abstract
The on-surface activation of carbon-halogen groups is an efficient route to produce radicals for constructing various hydrocarbons and carbon nanostructures. To date, the employed halide precursors have only one halogen attached to a carbon atom. It is thus of interest to study the effect of attaching more than one halogen atom to a carbon atom with the aim of producing multiple unpaired electrons. By introducing an alkenyl gem-dibromide, cumulene products were fabricated on a Au(111) surface by dehalogenative homocoupling reactions. The reaction products and pathways were unambiguously characterized by a combination of high-resolution scanning tunneling microscopy and non-contact atomic force microscopy measurements together with density functional calculations. This study further supplements the database of on-surface synthesis strategies and provides a facile manner for incorporation of more complicated carbon scaffolds into surface nanostructures.

Abstract
Cis-enediyne-type compounds have received much attention as potent antitumor antibiotics. The conventional synthesis of cis-enediynes in solution typically involves multiple steps and various side reactions. For the first time, selective one-step synthesis of cis-enediyne from a single reactant is reported on a Ag(111) surface with a yield up to 90 %. High selectivity for the formation of cis-enediyne originates from the steric effect posed by weak intermolecular interactions, which protect the cis-enediyne from further reaction. A series of comparative experiments and DFT-based transition-state calculations support the findings. The described synthetic approach for directing reaction pathways on-surface may illuminate potential syntheses of other unstable organic compounds.

Abstract
On-surface synthesis has prompted much interest in recent years because it provides an alternative strategy for controlling chemical reactions and allows for the direct observation of reaction pathways. Herein, we combined scanning tunneling microscopy and density functional theory to provide extensive evidence for the conversion of alkoxybenzene-containing ethers into alcohols by means of surface synthesis. The reported dealkylation reactions are finely controlled by the annealing parameters, which govern the onset of successive alkyl chains dissociations. Moreover, density functional theory calculations elucidate the details of the reaction pathways, showing that dealkylation reactions are surface-assisted and very different from their homogeneous analogues in solution.

Abstract
The on-surface polymerization of 1,3,6,8-tetrabromopyrene (Br4 Py) on Cu(111) and Au(111) surfaces under ultrahigh vacuum conditions was investigated by a combination of scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Deposition of Br4 Py on Cu(111) held at 300 K resulted in a spontaneous debromination reaction, generating the formation of a branched coordination polymer network stabilized by C-Cu-C bonds. After annealing at 473 K, the C-Cu-C bonds were converted to covalent C-C bonds, leading to the formation of a covalently linked molecular network of short oligomers. In contrast, highly ordered self-assembled two-dimensional (2D) patterns stabilized by both Br-Br halogen and Br-H hydrogen bonds were observed upon deposition of Br4 Py on Au(111) held at 300 K. Subsequent annealing of the sample at 473 K led to a dissociation of the C-Br bonds and the formation of disordered metal-coordinated molecular networks. Further annealing at 573 K resulted in the formation of covalently linked disordered networks. Importantly, we found that the chosen substrate not only plays an important role as catalyst for the Ullmann reaction, but also influences the formation of different types of intermolecular bonds and thus, determines the final polymer network morphology. DFT calculations further support our experimental findings obtained by STM and XPS and add complementary information on the reaction pathway of Br4 Py on the different substrates.

Abstract
Dibromotetracene molecules are deposited on the Cu(110) surface at room temperature. The complex evolution of this system has been monitored at different temperatures (i.e., 298, 523, 673, and 723 K) by means of a variety of complementary techniques that range from STM and temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) to high-resolution X-ray spectroscopy (XPS) and near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (NEXAFS). State-of-the-art density-functional calculations were used to determine the chemical processes that take place on the surface. After deposition at room temperature, the organic molecules are transformed into organometallic monomers through debromination and carbon-radical binding to copper adatoms. Organometallic dimers, trimers, or small oligomers, which present copper-bridged molecules, are formed by increasing the temperature. Surprisingly, further heating to 673 K causes the formation of elongated chains along the Cu(110) close-packed rows as a consequence of radical-site migration to the thermodynamically more stable molecule heads. Finally, massive dehydrogenation occurs at the highest temperature followed by ring condensation to nanographenic patches. This study is a paradigmatic example of how intermolecular coupling can be modulated by the stepwise control of a simple parameter, such as temperature, through a sequence of domino reactions.

Abstract
Using temperature-programmed desorption, supported by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and scanning tunneling microscopy, a comprehensive overview of the main reactions of 5,10,15,20-tetraphenyl-21H,23H-porphyrin (2HTPP) on Cu(111) as a function of coverage and temperature is obtained. Three reactions were identified: metalation with Cu substrate atoms, stepwise partial dehydrogenation, and finally complete dehydrogenation. At low coverage the reactions are independent of coverage, but at higher coverage metalation becomes faster and partial dehydrogenation slower. This behavior is explained by a weaker interaction between the iminic nitrogen atoms and the Cu(111) surface in the high-coverage checkerboard structure, leading to faster metalation, and the stabilizing effect of T-type interactions in the CuTPP islands formed at high coverage after metalation, leading to slower dehydrogenation. Based on the amount of hydrogen released and the appearance in STM, a structure of the partially dehydrogenated molecule is suggested.
