Selective C−H Bond Cleavage in Methane by Small Gold Clusters

Molecular-level electrocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction mediated by single platinum atoms

The activation and transformation of H₂O and CO₂ mediated by electrons and single Pt atoms is demonstrated at the molecular level. The reaction mechanism is revealed by the synergy of mass spectrometry, photoelectron spectroscopy, and quantum chemical calculations. Specifically, a Pt atom captures an electron and activates H₂O to form a H-Pt-OH^- complex. This complex reacts with CO₂via two different pathways to form formate, where CO₂ is hydrogenated, or to form bicarbonate, where CO₂ is carbonated. The overall formula of this reaction is identical to a typical electrochemical CO₂ reduction reaction on a Pt electrode. Since the reactants are electrons and isolated, single atoms and molecules, we term this reaction a molecular-level electrochemical CO₂ reduction reaction. Mechanistic analysis reveals that the negative charge distribution on the Pt-H and the -OH moieties in H-Pt-OH^- is critical for the hydrogenation and carbonation of CO₂. The realization of the molecular-level CO₂ reduction reaction provides insights into the design of novel catalysts for the electrochemical conversion of CO₂.

Au₂⁺ is a simple but crucial model system for understanding the diverse catalytic activity of gold. While the Au₂⁺ ground state (X²Σ_g⁺) is understood reasonably well from mass spectrometry and computations, no spectroscopic information is available for its first excited state (A²Σ_u⁺). Herein, we present the vibrationally resolved electronic spectrum of this state for cold Ar‐tagged Au₂⁺ cations. This exceptionally low‐lying and well isolated A²Σ_(u)⁺←X²Σ_(g)⁺ transition occurs in the near‐infrared range. The observed band origin (5738 cm⁻¹, 1742.9 nm, 0.711 eV) and harmonic Au−Au and Au−Ar stretch frequencies (201 and 133 cm⁻¹) agree surprisingly well with those predicted by standard time‐dependent density functional theory calculations. The linearly bonded Ar tag has little impact on either the geometric or electronic structure of Au₂⁺, because the Au₂⁺⋅⋅⋅Ar bond (∼0.4 eV) is much weaker than the Au−Au bond (∼2 eV). As a result of 6 s←5d excitation of an electron from the antibonding σ_u^* orbital (HOMO‐1) into the bonding σ_g orbital (SOMO), the Au−Au bond contracts substantially (by 0.1 Å).

Catalytic Co-Conversion of CH4 and CO2 Mediated by Rhodium-Titanium Oxide Anions RhTiO2. Angew Chem Int Ed Engl 2021;60:13788-13792. [PMID: 33890352 PMCID: PMC8251526 DOI: 10.1002/anie.202103808]

Catalytic co‐conversion of methane with carbon dioxide to produce syngas (2 H₂+2 CO) involves complicated elementary steps and almost all the elementary reactions are performed at the same high temperature conditions in practical thermocatalysis. Here, we demonstrate by mass spectrometric experiments that RhTiO₂⁻ promotes the co‐conversion of CH₄ and CO₂ to free 2 H₂+CO and an adsorbed CO (CO_ads) at room temperature; the only elementary step that requires the input of external energy is desorption of CO_ads from the RhTiO₂CO⁻ to reform RhTiO₂⁻. This study not only identifies a promising active species for dry (CO₂) reforming of methane to syngas, but also emphasizes the importance of temperature control over elementary steps in practical catalysis, which may significantly alleviate the carbon deposition originating from the pyrolysis of methane.

Simultaneous Functionalization of Methane and Carbon Dioxide Mediated by Single Platinum Atomic Anions

Mass spectrometric analysis of the anionic products of interaction among Pt^-, methane, and carbon dioxide shows that the methane activation complex, H₃C-Pt-H^-, reacts with CO₂ to form [H₃C-Pt-H(CO₂)]^-. Two hydrogenation and one C-C bond coupling products are identified as isomers of [H₃C-Pt-H(CO₂)]^- by a synergy between anion photoelectron spectroscopy and quantum chemical calculations. Mechanistic study reveals that both CH₄ and CO₂ are activated by the anionic Pt atom and that the successive depletion of the negative charge on Pt drives the CO₂ insertion into the Pt-H and Pt-C bonds of H₃C-Pt-H^-. This study represents the first example of the simultaneous functionalization of CH₄ and CO₂ mediated by single atomic anions.

Carbide Dihydrides: Carbonaceous Species Identified in Ta4 + -Mediated Methane Dehydrogenation

The products of methane dehydrogenation by gas‐phase Ta₄⁺ clusters are structurally characterized using infrared multiple photon dissociation (IRMPD) spectroscopy in conjunction with quantum chemical calculations. The obtained spectra of [4Ta,C,2H]⁺ reveal a dominance of vibrational bands of a H₂Ta₄C⁺ carbide dihydride structure over those indicative for a HTa₄CH⁺ carbyne hydride one, as is unambiguously verified by studies employing various methane isotopologues. Because methane dehydrogenation by metal cations M⁺ typically leads to the formation of either MCH₂⁺ carbene or HMCH⁺ carbyne hydride structures, the observation of a H₂MC⁺ carbide dihydride structure implies that it is imperative to consider this often‐neglected class of carbonaceous intermediates in the reaction of metals with hydrocarbons.

The electronic structure of the Au₂ ⁺ cation is essential for understanding its catalytic activity. We present the optical spectrum of mass-selected Au₂ ⁺ measured via photodissociation spectroscopy. Two vibrationally resolved band systems are observed in the 290-450 nm range (at ca. 440 and ca. 325 nm), which both exhibit rather irregular structure indicative of strong vibronic and spin-orbit coupling. The experimental spectra are compared to high-level quantum-chemical calculations at the CASSCF-MRCI level including spin-orbit coupling. The results demonstrate that the understanding of the electronic structure of this simple, seemingly H₂ ⁺ -like diatomic molecular ion strictly requires multireference and relativistic treatment including spin-orbit effects. The calculations reveal that multiple electronic states contribute to each respective band system. It is shown that popular DFT methods completely fail to describe the complex vibronic pattern of this fundamental diatomic cation.

Photoassisted Selective Steam and Dry Reforming of Methane to Syngas Catalyzed by Rhodium-Vanadium Bimetallic Oxide Cluster Anions at Room Temperature

Photoassisted steam reforming and dry (CO₂ ) reforming of methane (SRM and DRM) at room temperature with high syngas selectivity have been achieved in the gas-phase catalysis for the first time. The catalysts used are bimetallic rhodium-vanadium oxide cluster anions of Rh₂ VO_1-3 ^- . Both the oxidation of methane and reduction of H₂ O/CO₂ can take place efficiently in the dark while the pivotal step to govern syngas selectivity is photo-excitation of the reaction intermediates Rh₂ VO_2,3 CH₂ ^- to specific electronically excited states that can selectively produce CO and H₂ . Electronic excitation over Rh₂ VO_2,3 CH₂ ^- to control the syngas selectivity is further confirmed from the comparison with the thermal excitation of Rh₂ VO_2,3 CH₂ ^- , which leads to diversity of products. The atomic-level mechanism obtained from the well-controlled cluster reactions provides insight into the process of selective syngas production from the photocatalytic SRM and DRM reactions over supported metal oxide catalysts.

Small Gold(I) and Gold(I)-Silver(I) Clusters by C-Si Auration

Auration of o-trimethylsilyl arylphosphines leads to the formation of gold and gold-silver clusters with ortho-metalated phosphines displaying 3c-2e Au-C-M bonds (M=Au/Ag). Hexagold clusters [Au6 L4 ](X)2 are obtained by reaction of (L-TMS)AuCl with AgX, whereas reaction with AgX and Ag2 O leads to gold-silver clusters [Au4 Ag2 L4 ](X)2 . Oxo-trigold(I) species [Au3 O]+ were identified as the intermediates in the formation of the silver-doped clusters. Other [Au5 ], [Au4 Ag], and [Au12 Ag4 ] clusters were also obtained. Clusters containing PAu-Au-AuP structural motif display good catalytic activity in the activation of alkynes under homogeneous conditions.

Non-covalent Interactions and Charge Transfer between Propene and Neutral Yttrium-Doped and Pure Gold Clusters

The dopant and size‐dependent propene adsorption on neutral gold (Au_n) and yttrium‐doped gold (Au_n−1Y) clusters in the n=5–15 size range are investigated, combining mass spectrometry and gas phase reactions in a low‐pressure collision cell and density functional theory calculations. The adsorption energies, extracted from the experimental data using an RRKM analysis, show a similar size dependence as the quantum chemical results and are in the range of ≈0.6–1.2 eV. Yttrium doping significantly alters the propene adsorption energies for n=5, 12 and 13. Chemical bonding and energy decomposition analysis showed that there is no covalent bond between the cluster and propene, and that charge transfer and other non‐covalent interactions are dominant. The natural charges, Wiberg bond indices, and the importance of charge transfer all support an electron donation/back‐donation mechanism for the adsorption. Yttrium plays a significant role not only in the propene binding energy, but also in the chemical bonding in the cluster‐propene adduct. Propene preferentially binds to yttrium in small clusters (n<10), and to a gold atom at larger sizes. Besides charge transfer, relaxation also plays an important role, illustrating the non‐local effect of the yttrium dopant. It is shown that the frontier molecular orbitals of the clusters determine the chemical bonding, in line with the molecular‐like electronic structure of metal clusters.

Direct Conversion of Methane with Carbon Dioxide Mediated by RhVO3 - Cluster Anions

Direct conversion of methane with carbon dioxide to value-added chemicals is attractive but extremely challenging because of the thermodynamic stability and kinetic inertness of both molecules. Herein, the first dinuclear cluster species, RhVO₃ ^- , has been designed to mediate the co-conversion of CH₄ and CO₂ to oxygenated products, CH₃ OH and CH₂ O, in the temperature range of 393-600 K. The resulting cluster ions RhVO₃ CO^- after CH₃ OH formation can further desorb the [CO] unit to regenerate the RhVO₃ ^- cluster, leading to the successful establishment of a catalytic cycle for methanol production from CH₄ and CO₂ (CH₄ +CO₂ →CH₃ OH+CO). The exceptional activity of Rh-V dinuclear oxide cluster (RhVO₃ ^- ) identified herein provides a new mechanism for co-conversion of two very stable molecules CH₄ and CO₂ .

Selective Activation of the C-H Bond in Methane by Single Platinum Atomic Anions

Mass spectrometric analysis of the anionic products of interaction between platinum atomic anions, Pt^- , and methane, CH₄ and CD₄ , in a collision cell shows the preferred generation of [PtCH₄ ]^- and [PtCD₄ ]^- complexes and a low tendency toward dehydrogenation. [PtCH₄ ]^- is shown to be H-Pt-CH₃ ^- by a synergy between anion photoelectron spectroscopy and quantum chemical calculations, implying the rupture of a single C-H bond. The calculated reaction pathway accounts for the observed selective activation of methane by Pt^- . This study presents the first example of methane activation by a single atomic anion.

Identification of Active Sites and Structural Characterization of Reactive Ionic Intermediates by Cryogenic Ion Trap Vibrational Spectroscopy

Cryogenic ion trap vibrational spectroscopy paired with quantum chemistry currently represents the most generally applicable approach for the structural investigation of gaseous cluster ions that are not amenable to direct absorption spectroscopy. Here, we give an overview of the most popular variants of infrared action spectroscopy and describe the advantages of using cryogenic ion traps in combination with messenger tagging and vibrational predissociation spectroscopy. We then highlight a few recent studies that apply this technique to identify highly reactive ionic intermediates and to characterize their reactive sites. We conclude by commenting on future challenges and potential developments in the field.

Coupling of Methane and Carbon Dioxide Mediated by Diatomic Copper Boride Cations

The use of CH₄ and CO₂ to produce value-added chemicals via direct C-C coupling is a challenging chemistry problem because of the inertness of these two molecules. Herein, mass spectrometric experiments and high-level quantum-chemical calculations have identified the first diatomic species (CuB⁺ ) that can couple CH₄ with CO₂ under thermal collision conditions to produce ketene (H₂ C=C=O), an important intermediate in synthetic chemistry. The order to feed the reactants (CH₄ and CO₂ ) is important and CH₄ should be firstly fed to produce the C₂ product. Molecular-level mechanisms including control of product selectivity have been revealed for coupling of CH₄ with CO₂ under mild conditions.

Photodissociation of Sodium Iodide Clusters Doped with Small Hydrocarbons

Marine aerosols consist of a variety of compounds and play an important role in many atmospheric processes. In the present study, sodium iodide clusters with their simple isotope pattern serve as model systems for laboratory studies to investigate the role of iodide in the photochemical processing of sea-salt aerosols. Salt clusters doped with camphor, formate and pyruvate are studied in a Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometer (FT-ICR MS) coupled to a tunable laser system in both UV and IR range. The analysis is supported by ab initio calculations of absorption spectra and energetics of dissociative channels. We provide quantitative analysis of IRMPD measurements by reconstructing one-photon spectra and comparing them with the calculated ones. While neutral camphor is adsorbed on the cluster surface, the formate and pyruvate ions replace an iodide ion. The photodissociation spectra revealed several wavelength-specific fragmentation pathways, including the carbon dioxide radical anion formed by photolysis of pyruvate. Camphor and pyruvate doped clusters absorb in the spectral region above 290 nm, which is relevant for tropospheric photochemistry, leading to internal conversion followed by intramolecular vibrational redistribution, which leads to decomposition of the cluster. Potential photodissociation products of pyruvate in the actinic region may be formed with a cross section of <2×10-20  cm2 , determined by the experimental noise level.
