Abstract
The development of photoinduced luminescent radicals with dynamic emission color is still challenging. Herein we report a novel molecular radical system (TBIQ) that shows photo-controllable luminescence, leading to a wide range of ratiometric color changes via light excitation. The conjugated skeleton of TBIQ is decorated with steric-demanding tertiary butyl groups that enable appropriate intermolecular interaction to make dynamic intermolecular coupling possible for controllable behaviors. We reveal that the helicenic pseudo-planar conformation of TBIQ experiences a planarization process after light excitation, leading to more compactly stacked supermolecules and thus generating radicals via intermolecular charge transfer. The photo-controllable luminescent radical system is employed for a high-level information encryption application. This study may offer unique insight into molecular dynamic motion for optical manufacturing and broaden the scope of smart-responsive materials for advanced applications.

Abstract
Ultralong afterglow emissions due to room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) are of paramount importance in the advancement of smart sensors, bioimaging and light-emitting devices. We herein present an efficient approach to achieve rarely accessible phosphorescence of heavy atom-free organoboranes via photochemical switching of sterically tunable fluorescent Lewis pairs (LPs). LPs are widely applied in and well-known for their outstanding performance in catalysis and supramolecular soft materials but have not thus far been exploited to develop photo-responsive RTP materials. The intramolecular LP M1BNM not only shows a dynamic response to thermal treatment due to reversible N→B coordination but crystals of M1BNM also undergo rapid photochromic switching. As a result, unusual emission switching from short-lived fluorescence to long-lived phosphorescence (rad-M1BNM, τRTP =232 ms) is observed. The reported discoveries in the field of Lewis pairs chemistry offer important insights into their structural dynamics, while also pointing to new opportunities for photoactive materials with implications for fast responsive detectors.

Abstract
Achieving single-component white organic afterglow remains a great challenge owing to the difficulties in simultaneously supporting long-lived emissions from varied excited states of a molecule for complementary afterglow. Here, an extraordinary tri-mode emission from the radiative decays of singlet (S1 ), triplet (T1 ), and stabilized triplet (T1 * ) excited states was proposed to afford white afterglow through modulating the singlet-triplet splitting energy (ΔEST ) and exciton trapping depth (ETD ). Low-lying T1 * for yellow afterglow was constructed by H-aggregation engineering with large ETD and trace isomer doping, while high-lying T1 and S1 for blue afterglow with thermally activated emission feature were realized by reducing ΔEST through donor-acceptor molecular design. Therefore, the single-component white afterglow with high efficiency of 14.1 % and a lifetime of 0.61 s was achieved by rationally regulating the afterglow intensity ratios of complementary emissions from S1 , T1 , and T1 *.

Abstract
Recent development of most organic long persistent luminescence (OLPL) systems employed binary or tertiary doping. However, the design strategies towards OLPL materials with hour-long afterglow duration are still quite limited. Here, we propose a novel OLPL system through melt-casting method with 0.1 mol % of CuI complexes: 2,2'-bis(diphenylphosphino)-1,1'-binaphthyl BINAP-CuX (X=Cl, Br and I) doped into the triphenylphosphine (TPP) host. The charge separation was initiated prior to excitation through host coordination with CuI complexes, resulting in semi-free halogen ions and in situ generated CuI cations, which forms TPP + BINAP-CuX ionic pairs and subsequently ionic solids. The OLPL lifetime can be readily modulated by different halogen atoms and the afterglow can last up to more than 3 hours perceivable to human eyes. This is a rare example of OLPL initiated through host-guest coordination that could potentially expand the definition of OLPL systems and design strategies.

Abstract
The occurrence and transmission of chirality is a fascinating characteristic of nature. However, the intermolecular transmission efficiency of circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) remains challenging due to poor through-space energy transfer. We report a unique CPL transmission from inducing the achiral acceptor to emit CPL within a specific liquid crystal (LC)-based intermolecular system through a circularly polarized fluorescence resonance energy transfer (C-FRET), wherein the luminescent cholesteric LC is employed as the chirality donor, and rationally designed achiral long-wavelength aggregation-induced emission (AIE) fluorophore acts as the well-assembled acceptor. In contrast to photon-release-and-absorption, the chirality transmission channel of C-FRET is highly dependent upon the energy resonance in the highly intrinsic chiral assembly of cholesteric LC, as verified by deliberately separating the achiral acceptor from the chiral donor to keep it far beyond the resonance distance. This C-FRET mode provides a de novo strategy concept for high-level information processing for applications such as high-density data storage, combinatorial logic calculation, and multilevel data encryption and decryption.

Abstract
In this article, we report a newly designed D-A-D' derivative (CNCzPTZ), which displays selective expression of chromophores. This enables CNCzPTZ with solvatochromism, rare dual-mode AIEE properties, solid-state dual-emissions with phosphorescence and distinctive mechanochromism.CNCzPTZ exhibits dual-mode AIEE properties, since the emission band abruptly shifts from 550 nm to 500 nm as the water fraction increases. In the crystalline state, CNCzPTZ demonstrated dual emission bands of 478 nm and 538 nm.CNCzPTZ shows distinctive mechanochromic property in the solid state due to the planarization.

Abstract
This Minireview summarizes the recent progress of stimuli-responsive purely organic phosphorescence materials. Organic phosphorescence is closely related to the intermolecular interactions, because such interactions are beneficial to promote spin orbital coupling (SOC) and boost intersystem cross (ISC) efficiency and finally are conducive to satisfactory phosphorescence. It is found that the intermolecular interactions, which are essential for organic phosphorescence, are easily disturbed by external stimuli such as mechanical force, photon, acid, chemical vapor, leading to the luminescence change. According to this principle, various purely organic phosphorescence materials sensitive to external stimuli have been developed. This Minireview categorizes reported stimuli-responsive purely organic phosphorescence materials on the basis of different stimuli, including mechanochromism, mechanoluminescence, photoactivity, acid-responsiveness and other stimuli. Some prospective strategies for constructing stimuli-responsive purely organic phosphorescence molecules are provided.

Abstract
Room-temperature phosphorescence of metal and heavy atom-free organic molecules has emerged as an area of great potential in recent years. A rational design played a critical role in controlling the molecular ordering to impart efficient intersystem crossing and stabilize the triplet state to achieve room-temperature ultralong phosphorescence. However, in most cases, the strategies to strengthen phosphorescence efficiency have resulted in a reduced lifetime, and the available nearly degenerate singlet-triplet energy levels impart a natural competition between delayed fluorescence and phosphorescence, with the former one having the advantage. Herein, an organic helical assembly supports the exhibition of an ultralong phosphorescence lifetime. In contrary to other molecules, 3,6-phenylmethanone functionalized 9-hexylcarbazole exhibits a remarkable improvement in phosphorescence lifetime (>4.1 s) and quantum yield (11 %) owing to an efficient molecular packing in the crystal state. A right-handed helical molecular array act as a trap and exhibits triplet exciton migration to support the exceptionally longer phosphorescence lifetime.

Abstract
Supramolecular co-assembling terpyridine-derivatives with nanoclay (LP) are exploited to acquire efficient amorphous room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP). Experimental and theoretical investigations reveal that this co-assembly not only brings about a configuration transformation from the trans-trans (a) to the cis-trans (a'') form via the protonating process, significantly narrowing the singlet-triplet energy gap, thereby effectively facilitating the single-triplet ISC processes, but also well protects the triplet state and suppresses the nonradiative transitions via restricting molecular rotation and vibration by the hydrogen-bond interactions between them. Additionally, the flexible and transparent films, through co-assembling 1@LP (or 2@LP) with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), also display excellent phosphorescence performance. Owing to their distinctive RTP performances, the RH sensing and high-level data encryption are achieved.

Abstract
Purely organic materials showing room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) and ultralong RTP (OURTP) have recently attracted much attention. However, it is challenging to integrate circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) into RTP/OURTP. Here, we show a strategy to realize CPL-active OURTP (CP-OURTP) by binding an achiral phosphor group directly to the chiral center of an ester chain. Engineering of this flexible chiral chain enables efficient chirality transfer to carbazole aggregates, resulting in strong CP-OURTP with a lifetime of over 0.6 s and dissymmetry factor of 2.3×10-3 after the conformation regulation upon photo-activation. The realized CP-OURTP is thus stable at room temperature but can be deactivated quickly at 50 °C to CP-RTP with high CPL stability during the photo-activation/thermal-deactivation cycles. Based on this extraordinary photo/thermal-responsive and highly reversible CP-OURTP/RTP, a CPL-featured lifetime-encrypted combinational logic device has been successfully established.

Abstract
Ultralong organic phosphorescence (UOP) of metal-free organic materials has received considerable attention recently owing to their long-lived emission lifetimes, and the fact that they present an attractive alternative to persistent luminescence in inorganic phosphors. Enormous research effort has been devoted on improving UOP performance in metal-free organic phosphors by promoting the intersystem crossing (ISC) process and suppressing the non-radiative decay of triplet state excitons. This minireview summarizes the recent advances in the rational approaches for manipulating the UOP properties of small molecular crystals, such as phosphorescence lifetime, efficiency, and emission colors. Finally, the present challenges and future development of this field are proposed. This review will provide a guideline to rationally design more advanced metal-free organic phosphorescence materials for potential applications.

Abstract
Soft luminescent materials are attractive for optoelectronic applications, however, switching dominant chromophores for property enrichment remains a challenge. Herein, we report the first case of a soft organic molecule (DOS) featuring selective expression of chromophores. In response to various external stimuli, different chromophores of DOS can take turns working through conformation changes, exhibiting full-colour emissions peaking from 469 nm to 583 nm from ten individual single crystals. Dynamic triplet-exciton behaviours including thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF), room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP), mechanoluminescence (ML), and distinct mechano-responsive luminescence (MRL) can all be realized. This novel designed DOS molecule provides a multifunctional platform for detection of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), multicolour dynamic displays, sensing, anticounterfeiting, and hopefully many others.

Abstract
Solid-state materials with efficient room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) emissions have found widespread applications in materials science, while liquid or solution-phase pure organic RTP emission systems has been rarely reported, because of the nonradiative decay and quenchers from the liquid medium. Reported here is the first example of visible-light-excited pure organic RTP in aqueous solution by using a supramolecular host-guest assembly strategy. The unique cucurbit[8]uril-mediated quaternary stacking structure allows tunable photoluminescence and visible-light excitation, enabling the fabrication of multicolor hydrogels and cell imaging. The present assembly-induced emission approach, as a proof of concept, contributes to the construction of novel metal-free RTP systems with tunable photoluminescence in aqueous solution, providing broad opportunities for further applications in biological imaging, detection, optical sensors, and so forth.

Abstract
Amorphous purely organic phosphorescence materials with long-lived and color-tunable emission are rare. Herein, we report a concise chemical ionization strategy to endow conventional poly(4-vinylpyridine) (PVP) derivatives with ultralong organic phosphorescence (UOP) under ambient conditions. After the ionization of 1,4-butanesultone, the resulting PVP-S phosphor showed a UOP lifetime of 578.36 ms, which is 525 times longer than that of PVP polymer itself. Remarkably, multicolor UOP emission ranging from blue to red was observed with variation of the excitation wavelength, which has rarely been reported for organic luminescent materials. This finding not only provides a guideline for developing amorphous polymers with UOP properties, but also extends the scope of room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) materials for practical applications in photoelectric fields.

Abstract
Pure organic materials with intrinsic room-temperature phosphorescence typically rely on heavy atoms or heteroatoms. Two different strategies towards constructing organic room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) species based upon the through-space charge transfer (TSCT) unit of [2.2]paracyclophane (PCP) were demonstrated. Materials with bromine atoms, PCP-BrCz and PPCP-BrCz, exhibit RTP lifetime of around 100 ms. Modulating the PCP core with non-halogen-containing electron-withdrawing units, PCP-TNTCz and PCP-PyCNCz, successfully elongate the RTP lifetime to 313.59 and 528.00 ms, respectively, the afterglow of which is visible for several seconds under ambient conditions. The PCP-TNTCz and PCP-PyCNCz enantiomers display excellent circular polarized luminescence with dissymmetry factors as high as -1.2×10-2 in toluene solutions, and decent RTP lifetime of around 300 ms for PCP-TNTCz enantiomers in crystalline state.

Abstract
A D-A-D' type pure organic molecule, named ODFRCZ, has unique triple-emission character covering fluorescence, phosphorescence, and delayed fluorescence (DF). The phosphorescence of ODFRCZ has a rather long lifetime of about 350 ms at room temperature. One dimer of ODFRCZ with enhanced parallel molecular packing acts more effectively to prompt ISC processes, which further generates room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP), owing to the larger transition dipole moment and closer energy level between S1 and Tn . ODFRCZ is a rare example of an organic RTP molecule that shows dual-stimuli responsiveness of dual-mode mechanochromism (fluorescence red-shift and RTP/DF on-off switch) and reversible crystal-state photochromism. This work may broaden the knowledge for stimuli-responsive RTP organic molecules and lay the foundation for their wide-scale applications.

Abstract
Organic luminescence with different forms continues to be one of the most active research fields in science and technology. Herein, an ultra-simple organic molecule (TPA-B), which exhibits both mechanoluminescence (ML) and photo-induced room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) in the crystalline state, provides an opportunity to reveal the internal mechanism of ML and the dynamic process of photo-induced RTP in the same molecule. Through the detailed investigation of photophysical properties together with crystal structures, the key role of molecular packing and intermolecular interactions was highlighted in the luminescence response by mechanical and light stimulus, affording efficient strategies to design potential smart functional materials with multiple luminescence properties.
