Enabling Fluorinated MOF-Based Membranes for Simultaneous Removal of H2 S and CO2 from Natural Gas

Tuning MOF/polymer interfacial pore geometry in mixed matrix membrane for upgrading CO2 separation performance

The current paradigm considers the control of the MOF/polymer interface mostly for achieving a good compatibility between the two components to ensure the fabrication of continuous mixed-matrix metal-organic framework (MMMOF) membranes. Here, we unravel that the interfacial pore shape nanostructure plays a key role for an optimum molecular transport. The prototypical ultrasmall pore AlFFIVE-1-Ni MOF was assembled with the polymer PIM-1 to design a composite with gradually expanding pore from the MOF entrance to the MOF/polymer interfacial region. Concentration gradient-driven molecular dynamics simulations demonstrated that this pore nanostructuring enables an optimum guided path for the gas molecules at the MOF/polymer interface that decisively leads to an acceleration of the molecular transport all along the MMMOF membrane. This numerical prediction resulted in the successful fabrication of a [001]-oriented nanosheets AlFFIVE-1-Ni/PIM-1 MMMOF membrane exhibiting an excellent CO2 permeability, better than many MMMs, and ideally associated with a sufficiently high CO2/CH4 selectivity that makes this membrane very promising for natural gas/biogas purification.

New generation mixed matrix membrane for CO2 separation: Transition from binary to quaternary mixed matrix membrane

Contemporary advances in material development associated with membrane gas separation refer to the cost-effective fabrication of high-performance, defect-free mixed matrix membranes (MMMs). For clean energy production, natural gas purification, and CO2 capture from flue gas systems, constituting a functional integration of polymer matrix and inorganic filler materials find huge applications. The broad domain of research and development of MMMs focused on the selection of appropriate materials, inexpensive membrane fabrication, and comparative study with other gas separation membranes for real-world applications. This study addressed a comprehensive review of the advanced MMMs wrapping various facets of membrane material selection; polymer and filler particle morphology and compatibility between the phases and the relevance of several fillers in the assembly of MMMs are analyzed. Further, the research on binary MMMs, their problems, and solutions to overcome these challenges have also been discussed. Finally, the future directions and scope of work on quaternary MMM are scrutinized in the article.

Recent advances in the chemistry and applications of fluorinated metal-organic frameworks (F-MOFs)

Metal-organic frameworks are a class of porous crystalline materials based on the ordered connection of metal centers or metal clusters by organic linkers with comprehensive functionalities. The interest in these materials is rapidly moving towards their application in industry and real life. In this context, cheap and sustainable synthetic strategies of MOFs with tailored structures and functions are nowadays a topic widely studied from different points of view. In this review, fluorinated MOFs (F-MOFs) and their applications are investigated. The principal aim is to provide an overview of the structural features and the main application of MOFs containing fluorine atoms both as anionic units or as coordinating elements of more complex inorganic units and, therefore, directly linked to the structural metals or as part of fluorinated linkers used in the synthesis of MOFs. Herein we present a review of F-MOFs reported in the recent literature compared to benchmark compounds published over the last 10 years. The compounds are discussed in terms of their structure and properties according to the aforementioned classification, with an insight into the different chemical nature of the bonds. The application fields of F-MOFs, especially in sustainability related issues, such as harmful gas sorption and separation, will also be discussed. F-MOFs are compounds containing fluorine atoms in their framework and they can be based on: (a) fluorinated metallic or semi-metallic anionic clusters or: (b) fluorinated organic linkers or (c) eventually containing both the building blocks. The nature of a covalent C-F bond in terms of length, charge separation and dipole moment sensibly differs from that of a partly ionic M-F (M = metal) one so that the two classes of materials (points a and b) have different properties and they find various application fields. The study shows how the insertion of polar M-F and C-F bonds in the MOF structure may confer several advantages in terms of interaction with gaseous molecules and the compounds can find application in gas sorption and separation. In addition, hydrophobicity tends to increase compared to non-fluorinated analogues, resulting in an overall improvement in moisture stability.

Bismuth Coordination Polymers with Fluorinated Linkers: Aqueous Stability, Bivolatility, and Adsorptive Behavior

Bismuth metal-organic frameworks and coordination polymers (CP) are challenging to synthesize, given the poor solubility of bismuth precursors and asymmetric and labile ligation of Bi3+ due to its intrinsic lone pair. Here, we synthesize and structurally characterize three Bi3+-CPs, exploiting a tetrafluoroterephtalate (F4BDC) linker to determine the effect of high acidity on these synthesis and coordination challenges. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction characterization showed that pi-pi stacking of linkers directs framework arrangement and generally deters open porosity in the three structures, respectively featuring Bi chains (Bi chain -F 4 BDC), Bi dimers (Bi 2 -F 4 BDC) linked into chains, and Bi tetramers (Bi 4 -F 4 BDC). Powder X-ray diffraction and microscopic imaging show the high purity and stability of these compounds in water. Naphthalenedisulfonate (NDS) was used as a mineralizer in the synthesis of (Bi chain -F 4 BDC) and (Bi 4 -F 4 BDC), and studies of its role in assembly pathways yielded two additional structures featuring mixed NDS and F4BDC, respectively, linking monomer and octamer Bi nodes, and confirmed that F4BDC is the preferred (less labile) linker. Methylene blue (MB) adsorption studies show differing efficacies of the three Bi-F4BDC phases, attributed to surface characteristics of the preferential growth facets, while generally most effective adsorption is attributed to the hydrophobicity of fluorinated ligands. Finally, thermogravimetric analysis of all three Bi-F4BDC phases indicates simultaneous ligand degradation and in situ formation of volatile Bi compounds, which could be exploited in the chemical vapor deposition of Bi-containing thin films.

Study on Ag(I) Loaded ZIF-8 and Ag(I) Ion Release in Artificial Seawater

From a porous structure perspective, the one-stage de novo synthesis method and impregnation method were applied to synthesize Ag(I) ion-containing ZIF-8 samples. With the de novo synthesis method, Ag(I) ions could be located inside micropores or adsorbed on the external surface of the ZIF-8 by selecting AgNO₃ in water or Ag₂CO₃ in ammonia solution as precursors, respectively. The ZIF-8 confining Ag(I) ion exhibited a much lower constant releasing rate than the Ag(I) ion adsorbed on the ZIF-8 surface in artificial seawater. As such, strong diffusion resistance in association with the confinement effect is contributed by ZIF-8's micropore. On the other hand, the release of Ag(I) ions adsorbed on the external surface was diffusion limited. Therefore, the releasing rate would reach a maximum not increasing with Ag(I) loading in the ZIF-8 sample.

Functionalized GO Membranes for Efficient Separation of Acid Gases from Natural Gas: A Computational Mechanistic Understanding

Membrane separation technology is applied in natural gas processing, while a high-performance membrane is highly in demand. This paper considers the bright future of functionalized graphene oxide (GO) membranes in acid gas removal from natural gas. By molecular simulations, the adsorption and diffusion behaviors of several unary gases (N2, CH4, CO2, H2S, and SO2) are explored in the 1,4-phenylenediamine-2-sulfonate (PDASA)-doped GO channels. Molecular insights show that the multilayer adsorption of acid gases evaluates well by the Redlich-Peterson model. A tiny amount of PDASA promotes the solubility coefficient of CO2 and H2S, respectively, up to 4.5 and 5.3 mmol·g-1·kPa-1, nearly 2.5 times higher than those of a pure GO membrane, which is due to the improved binding affinity, great isosteric heat, and hydrogen bonds, while N2 and CH4 only show single-layer adsorption with solubility coefficients lower than 0.002 mmol·g-1·kPa-1, and their weak adsorption is insusceptible to PDASA. Although acid gas diffusivity in GO channels is inhibited below 20 × 10-6 cm2·s-1 by PDASA, the solubility coefficient of acid gases is certainly high enough to ensure their separation efficiency. As a result, the permeabilities (P) of acid gases and their selectivities (α) over CH4 are simultaneously improved (PCO2 = 7265.5 Barrer, αCO2/CH4 = 95.7; P(H2S+CO2) = 42075.1 Barrer, αH2S/CH4 = 243.8), which outperforms most of the ever-reported membranes. This theoretical study gives a mechanistic understanding of acid gas separation and provides a unique design strategy to develop high-performance GO membranes toward efficient natural gas processing.

Tailoring the Pore Size and Chemistry of Ionic Ultramicroporous Polymers for Trace Sulfur Dioxide Capture with High Capacity and Selectivity

Here we demonstrate the deep removal of SO₂ with high uptake capacity (1.55 mmol g^-1 ) and record SO₂ /CO₂ selectivity (>5000) at ultra-low pressure of 0.002 bar, using ionic ultramicroporous polymers (IUPs) with high density of basic anions. The successful construction of uniform ultramicropores via polymerizing ionic monomers into IUPs enables the fully exploitation of the selective anionic sites. Notably, the aperture size and surface chemistry of IUPs can be finely tuned by adjusting the branched structure of ionic monomers, which play critical roles in excluding CH₄ and N₂ , as well as reducing the coadsorption of CO₂ . The swelling property of IUPs with adsorption of SO₂ contributed to the high SO₂ uptake capacity and high separation selectivity. Systematic investigations including static gas adsorption, dynamic breakthrough experiments, stability tests and modeling studies confirmed the efficient performance of IUPs for trace SO₂ capture.

What Fluorine Can Do in CO2 Chemistry: Applications from Homogeneous to Heterogeneous Systems

CO₂ chemistry including capture and fixation has attracted great attention towards the aim of reducing the consumption of fossil fuels and CO₂ accumulation in the atmosphere. "CO₂ -philic" materials are required to achieve good performance owing to the intrinsic properties of the CO₂ molecule, that is, thermodynamic stability and kinetic inertness. In this respect, fluorinated materials have been deployed in CO₂ capture (physical and chemical pathway) or fixation (thermo- and electrocatalytic procedure) with good performances, including homogeneous (e. g., ionic liquids and small organic molecules) and heterogeneous counterparts (e. g., carbons, porous organic polymers, covalent triazine frameworks, metal-organic frameworks, and membranes). In this Minireview, these works are summarized and analyzed from the aspects of (1) the strategy used for fluorine introduction, (2) characterization of the targeted materials, (3) performance of the fluorinated systems in CO₂ chemistry, and comparison with the nonfluorinated counterparts, (4) the role of fluorinated functionalities in the working procedure, and (5) the relationship between performance and structural/electronic properties of the materials. The systematic summary in this Minireview will open new opportunities in guiding the design of "CO₂ -philic" materials and pave the way to stimulate further progress in this field.

Ionic-Liquid-Functionalized UiO-66 Framework: An Experimental and Theoretical Study on the Cycloaddition of CO2 and Epoxides

A facile approach for modifying the UiO-66-NH₂ metal-organic framework by incorporating imidazolium-based ionic liquids (ILs) to form bifunctional heterogeneous catalysts for the cycloaddition of epoxides to CO₂ is reported. Methylimidazolium- and methylbenzimidazolium-based IL units (ILA and ILB, respectively) were introduced into the pore walls of the UiO-66-NH₂ framework through a condensation reaction to generate ILA@U6N and ILB@U6N catalysts, respectively. The resultant heterogeneous catalysts, especially ILA@U6N, exhibited excellent CO₂ adsorption capability, which makes them effective for cycloaddition reactions producing cyclic carbonates under mild reaction conditions in the absence of any cocatalyst or solvent. The significantly enhanced activity of ILA@U6N is attributed to the synergism between the coordinately unsaturated Lewis acidic Zr⁴⁺ centers and Br^- ions in the bifunctional heterogeneous catalysts. The size effect of the ILs on coupling between the epoxide and CO₂ was also studied for ILA@U6N and ILB@U6N. A periodic DFT study was performed to provide evidence of possible intermediates, transition states, and pathways, as well as to gain deeper insight into the mechanism of the ILA@U6N-catalyzed cycloaddition reaction between epichlorohydrin and CO₂ .
