Molecular Mechanisms behind Acetylene Adsorption and Selectivity in Functional Porous Materials

Since its first industrial production in 1890s, acetylene has played a vital role in manufacturing a wide spectrum of materials. Although current methods and infrastructures for various segments of acetylene industries are well-established, with emerging functional porous materials that enabled desired selectivity toward target molecules, it is of timely interest to develop new efficient technologies to promote safer acetylene processes with a higher energy efficiency and lower carbon footprint. In this Minireview, we, from the perspective of materials chemistry, review state-of-the-art examples of advanced porous materials, namely metal-organic frameworks and decorated zeolites, that have been applied to the purification and storage of acetylene. We also discuss the challenges on the roadmap of translational research in the development of new solid sorbent-based separation technologies and highlight areas which require future research efforts.

Binary Solvent Regulated Architecture of Ultra-Microporous Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Frameworks with Tunable Polarization for Highly-Selective Gas Separation

A binary solvent synthetic strategy is proposed for the construction of C₂ -symmetric molecule-based hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) with permanent ultra-micropores and surface polarization derived from tunable coplanar open oxygen atoms. The activated HOFs BTBA-1 a and PTBA-1 a show highly selective separation of CO₂ /N₂ with a record high ideal adsorbed solution theory (IAST) selectivity >2000 under ambient temperature and pressure.

Terminal and Internal Alkyne Complexes and Azide-Alkyne Cycloaddition Chemistry of Copper(I) Supported by a Fluorinated Bis(pyrazolyl)borate

Copper plays an important role in alkyne coordination chemistry and transformations. This report describes the isolation and full characterization of a thermally stable, copper(I) acetylene complex using a highly fluorinated bis(pyrazolyl)borate ligand support. Details of the related copper(I) complex of HC≡CSiMe₃ are also reported. They are three-coordinate copper complexes featuring η²-bound alkynes. Raman data show significant red-shifts in C≡C stretch of [H₂B(3,5-(CF₃)₂Pz)₂]Cu(HC≡CH) and [H₂B(3,5-(CF₃)₂Pz)₂]Cu(HC≡CSiMe₃) relative to those of the corresponding alkynes. Computational analysis using DFT indicates that the Cu(I) alkyne interaction in these molecules is primarily of the electrostatic character. The π-backbonding is the larger component of the orbital contribution to the interaction. The dinuclear complexes such as Cu₂(μ-[3,5-(CF₃)₂Pz])₂(HC≡CH)₂ display similar Cu-alkyne bonding features. The mononuclear [H₂B(3,5-(CF₃)₂Pz)₂]Cu(NCMe) complex catalyzes [3 + 2] cycloadditions between tolyl azide and a variety of alkynes including acetylene. It is comparatively less effective than the related trinuclear copper catalyst {μ-[3,5-(CF₃)₂Pz]Cu}₃ involving bridging pyrazolates.

Three-in-One C2 H2 -Selectivity-Guided Adsorptive Separation across an Isoreticular Family of Cationic Square-Lattice MOFs

Energy-efficient selective physisorption driven C₂ H₂ separation from industrial C2-C1 impurities such as C₂ H₄ , CO₂ and CH₄ is of great importance in the purification of downstream commodity chemicals. We address this challenge employing a series of isoreticular cationic metal-organic frameworks, namely iMOF-nC (n=5, 6, 7). All three square lattice topology MOFs registered higher C₂ H₂ uptakes versus the competing C2-C1 gases (C₂ H₄ , CO₂ and CH₄ ). Dynamic column breakthrough experiments on the best-performing iMOF-6C revealed the first three-in-one C₂ H₂ adsorption selectivity guided separation of C₂ H₂ from 1:1 C₂ H₂ /CO₂ , C₂ H₂ /C₂ H₄ and C₂ H₂ /CH₄ mixtures. Density functional theory calculations critically examined the C₂ H₂ selective interactions in iMOF-6C. Thanks to the abundance of square lattice topology MOFs, this study introduces a crystal engineering blueprint for designing C₂ H₂ -selective layered metal-organic physisorbents, previously unreported in cationic frameworks.

Efficient C2H2/CO2 Separation in Ultramicroporous Metal-Organic Frameworks with Record C2H2 Storage Density

Physical separation of C₂H₂ from CO₂ on metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has received substantial research interest due to the advantages of simplicity, security, and energy efficiency. However, that C₂H₂ and CO₂ exhibit very close physical properties makes their separation exceptionally challenging. Previous work appeared to mostly focused on introducing open metal sites that aims to enhance the C₂H₂ affinity at desired sites, whereas the reticular manipulation of organic components has rarely been investigated. In this work, by reticulating preselected amino and hydroxy functionalities into isostructural ultramicroporous chiral MOFs-Ni₂(l-asp)₂(bpy) (MOF-NH₂) and Ni₂(l-mal)₂(bpy) (MOF-OH)-we targeted efficient C₂H₂ uptake and C₂H₂/CO₂ separation, which outperforms most benchmark materials. Explicitly, MOF-OH adsorbs substantial amount of C₂H₂ with record storage density of 0.81 g mL^-1 at ambient conditions, which even exceeds the solid density of C₂H₂ at 189 K. In addition, MOF-OH gave IAST selectivity of 25 toward equimolar mixture of C₂H₂/CO₂, which is nearly twice higher than that of MOF-NH₂. Notably, the adsorption enthalpies for C₂H₂ at zero converge in both MOFs are remarkably low (17.5 kJ mol^-1 for MOF-OH and 16.7 kJ mol^-1 for MOF-NH₂), which to our knowledge are the lowest among efficient rigid C₂H₂ sorbents. The efficiencies of both MOFs for the separation of C₂H₂/CO₂ are validated by multicycle breakthrough experiments. DFT calculations provide molecular-level insight over the adsorption/separation mechanism. Moreover, MOF-OH can survive in boiling water for at least 1 week and can be easily scaled up to kilograms eco-friendly and economically, which is very crucial for potential industrial implementation.

Interpenetration symmetry control within ultramicroporous robust boron cluster hybrid MOFs for benchmark purification of acetylene from carbon dioxide

The separation of C2H2/CO2 is an important process in industry but challenged by the trade-off of capacity and selectivity owning to their similar physical properties and identical kinetic molecular size. Herein, we report the first example of symmetrically interpenetrated dodecaborate pillared MOF, ZNU-1, for benchmark selective separation of C2H2 from CO2 with a high C2H2 capacity of 76.3 cm3 g-1 and record C2H2/CO2 selectivity of 56.6 (298 K, 1 bar) among all the robust porous materials without open metal sites. Single crystal structure analysis and modelling study indicated that the interpenetration shifting from asymmetric to symmetric mode provided optimal pore chemistry with ideal synergistic "2+2" dihydrogen bonding sites for tight C2H2 trapping. The exceptional separation performance was further evidenced by simulated and experimental breakthroughs with excellent recyclability and high productivity (2.4 mol/kg) of 99.5% purity C2H2 during stepped desorption process.

Optimal Pore Chemistry in an Ultramicroporous Metal-Organic Framework for Benchmark Inverse CO2 /C2 H2 Separation

Isolation of CO₂ from acetylene (C₂ H₂ ) via CO₂ -selective sorbents is an energy-efficient technology for C₂ H₂ purification, but a strategic challenge due to their similar physicochemical properties. There is still no specific methodology for constructing sorbents that preferentially trap CO₂ over C₂ H₂ . We report an effective strategy to construct optimal pore chemistry in a Ce^IV -based ultramicroporous metal-organic framework Ce^IV -MIL-140-4F, based on charge-transfer effects, for efficient inverse CO₂ /C₂ H₂ separation. The ligand-to-metal cluster charge transfer is facilitated by Ce^IV with low-lying unoccupied 4f orbitals and electron-withdrawing F atoms functionalized tetrafluoroterephthalate, affording a perfect pore environment to match CO₂ . The exceptional CO₂ uptake (151.7 cm³  cm^-3 ) along with remarkable separation selectivities (above 40) set a new benchmark for inverse CO₂ /C₂ H₂ separation, which is verified via simulated and experimental breakthrough experiments. The unique CO₂ recognition mechanism is further unveiled by in situ powder X-ray diffraction experiments, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy measurements, and molecular calculations.

Amino-Functionalised Hybrid Ultramicroporous Materials that Enable Single-Step Ethylene Purification from a Ternary Mixture

Pyrazine-linked hybrid ultramicroporous (pore size <7 Å) materials (HUMs) offer benchmark performance for trace carbon capture thanks to strong selectivity for CO2 over small gas molecules, including light hydrocarbons. That the prototypal pyrazine-linked HUMs are amenable to crystal engineering has enabled second generation HUMs to supersede the performance of the parent HUM, SIFSIX-3-Zn, mainly through substitution of the metal and/or the inorganic pillar. Herein, we report that two isostructural aminopyrazine-linked HUMs, MFSIX-17-Ni (17=aminopyrazine; M=Si, Ti), which we had anticipated would offer even stronger affinity for CO2 than their pyrazine analogs, unexpectedly exhibit reduced CO2 affinity but enhanced C2 H2 affinity. MFSIX-17-Ni are consequently the first physisorbents that enable single-step production of polymer-grade ethylene (>99.95 % for SIFSIX-17-Ni) from a ternary equimolar mixture of ethylene, acetylene and CO2 thanks to coadsorption of the latter two gases. We attribute this performance to the very different binding sites in MFSIX-17-Ni versus SIFSIX-3-Zn.
