The determinants of Canadian children's personal exposures to magnetic fields

Extremely-low-frequency magnetic field exposure of children at schools near high voltage transmission lines

Many epidemiological studies have investigated residential exposure to extremely-low-frequency magnetic field (ELF-MF) for children, but exposure at schools where children may stay up to 8 h every weekday was rarely considered. Between March and June 2004, we carried out a field study in Taipei City and County of northern Taiwan to explore ELF-MF exposure pattern among children at schools with high voltage transmission lines (HVTL) running through the campuses. One hundred and one children attending 14 schools with nearby HVTL (exposed group) and 123 children of 18 schools at least 100 m away from HVTL (unexposed group) were monitored for 24-hour personal ELF-MF exposure. Selected classrooms and playgrounds within the buffer regions (i.e., within 30 m of HVTL) and those away from the buffer regions were also assessed, using spot measurements, to determine the extent to which HVTL may contribute to the environmental exposure on campuses. Results show that the two groups didn't differ significantly for both mean exposure and proportion of exposure greater than 0.4 micro-Tesla (microT) estimated for 24 h. However, we noted that 17.8% of the exposed children had a personal mean exposure greater than 0.4 microT during school hours, significantly (p=0.011) higher than that (6.5%) estimated for the unexposed children. An even higher percentage (27.3%) was observed for 11 students with their classrooms intersecting the buffer regions. Playgrounds near buffer regions showed a significantly higher ELF-MF than the other areas of the exposed schools (0.70 vs 0.18 microT, p=0.043). The study demonstrates a wide range of exposures to ELF-MF among school children at campuses adjacent to HVTL. Children attending the exposed schools may have a higher chance of experiencing a mean exposure greater than 0.4 microT during school hours.

Investigation of the sources of residential power frequency magnetic field exposure in the UK Childhood Cancer Study

There is an unexplained association between exposure to the magnetic fields arising from the supply and use of electricity, and increase in risk of childhood leukaemia. The UK Childhood Cancer Study (UKCCS) provides a large and unique source of information on residential magnetic field exposure in the UK. The purpose of this supplementary study was to investigate a sample of UKCCS homes in order to identify the particular sources that contribute to elevated time-averaged exposure. In all, 196 homes have been investigated, 102 with exposures estimated on the basis of the original study to be above 0.2 microT, and 21 higher than 0.4 microT, a threshold above which a raised risk has been observed. First, surveys were carried out outside the property boundaries of all 196 study homes, and then, where informed consent had been obtained, assessments were conducted inside the properties of 19 homes. The study found that low-voltage (LV) sources associated with the final electricity supply accounted together for 77% of exposures above 0.2 microT, and 57% of those above 0.4 microT. Most of these exposures were linked to net currents in circuits inside and/or around the home. High-voltage (HV) sources, including the HV overhead power lines that are the focus of public concern, accounted for 23% of the exposures above 0.2 microT, and 43% of those above 0.4 microT. Public health interest has focused on the consideration of precautionary measures that would reduce exposure to power frequency magnetic fields. Our study provides a basis for considering the options for exposure mitigation in the UK. For instance, in elevated-exposure homes where net currents are higher than usual, if it is possible to reduce the net currents, then the exposure could be reduced for a sizeable proportion of these homes. Further investigations would be necessary to determine whether this is feasible.

Apartment electrical wiring: a cause of extremely low frequency magnetic field exposure in residential areas

Extremely low frequency (ELF) magnetic fields (MFs) were measured at 696 points in a room of a Japanese apartment building. The building had 124 rooms with layouts and wiring identical to those of the studied room. ELF-MFs exceeded 0.4 microT in 24% of the living space, and the maximum value, 1.8 microT, was detected at floor level. Analysis of the MF distribution revealed that 60 Hz 100 V electrical wiring for room lights within the floor and ceiling had been laid out in large rectangles, equivalent to 1 turn coils. Further plotting of the vertical components every 0.01 m on the floor indicated that the depth of the cable was 0.23 m. Further studies should be conducted in order to confirm that the building investigated in this pilot study is typical of Japanese apartment buildings in terms of ELF-MFs.

Experimental validation of a statistical model for evaluating the past or future magnetic field exposures of a population living near power lines

This study was designed to provide an experimental validation for a statistical model predicting past or future exposures to magnetic fields (MF) from power lines. The model estimates exposure, combining the distribution of ambient MF in the absence of power lines with the distribution of past or future MF produced by power lines. In the study, validation is carried out by comparing exposures predicted by the model with the actual measurements obtained from a large-scale epidemiological study. The comparison was made for a group of 220 women living near a 735 kV power line. Knowing that the individual arithmetic means of MF exposures follow a log-normal distribution, the Pearson correlation between the log-transformed measured means and the calculated ones was determined and found to be 0.77. Predicted values of MF exposures were slightly lower than measured values. The calculated geometric mean of the group was 0.33 microT, compared to 0.38 microT for the measured geometric mean. The present study shows good agreement between the measured MF exposure of an individual inside a house near a 735 kV line and the MF exposure calculated using a statistical model.

Use of short-term measurements for assessing temporal variability of residential ELF magnetic field exposure

In this study, we introduced and tested a new approach to characterize residential magnetic field (MF) exposure. Short-term 20-min MF measurements were obtained by a person who carried out instantaneous spot measurements in residences. Compared to spot measurements, the 20-min measurement could potentially improve exposure assessment, because it contains information of temporal variations of MF, which have been suggested as biologically important characteristics of MF exposure. We have used this new exposure assessment method on a study of maternal MF exposure and reproductive outcomes. To validate the new method, the exposure of 30 subjects was measured with a more accurate "gold standard" method (24 h personal exposure measurements). The measures of validity used were the Spearman correlation coefficient (r), sensitivity, and specificity. We evaluated the validity of the 20-min measurements for estimating several different exposure metrics for the entire 24 h measurement period or for the hours spent at home: arithmetic mean, median, percentage of time above 0.15 microT, standard deviation, rate of change metric, standardized rate of change metric, constant field metric, and three metrics for the occurrence of high-peak exposures. The 20-min measurement was modestly associated with standard deviation and the rate of change metric, but gave very little information of other metrics of temporal variation. The 20-min measurement can also be used for assessing exposure metrics such as arithmetic mean and median, but it does not seem to offer any advantages compared to traditional 'spot' measurements. The 20-min measurement was not useful for assessing occurrence of high-peak exposures. We conclude that the 20-min measurement is useful for estimating some aspects of MF temporal variability.

Correlation of year-to-year magnetic field exposure metrics among children in a leukemia survival study

The Childhood Leukemia Survival Study is examining the possible association between magnetic field exposure and survival of children with newly diagnosed acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL). We report the results of serial 24-h personal magnetic field monitoring for 412 US and Canadian children and present the correlations between annual values. The mean time-weighted average (TWA) and geometric mean (GM) were similar for first, second, and third year measurements [TWA: 0.11 microT (n = 412), 0.13 microT (n = 304), and 0.12 microT (n = 134), respectively]. There were no consistent differences in mean TWA or GM based on age or gender. Significantly lower mean TWA and GM were found for children living in rural areas. Higher exposures were noted among children living in urban areas, among apartments dwellers, and those living in rental homes. Measurements taken during summer months and among children residing in the northeast and Canada also tended to be higher. Correlations for most metrics were increased among children who had annual measurements performed during the same season. The metric with the highest year-to-year correlation was the GM. The lowest correlations were found for metrics estimating field intermittency and temporal stability. First to second year GMs were well correlated when taken in the same home (Spearman rank correlation = 0.70), but a lower correlation (0.44) was noted among residentially mobile children. Our findings suggest that summarizing exposure using a single measurement of GM can estimate exposures for residentially stable children, but is not a good predictor of personal exposures among children who change residence during the study interval.
