Synthesis and Reactivity of Bis-tris(pyrazolyl)borate Lanthanide/Aluminum Heterobimetallic Trihydride Complexes

Molecular heterobimetallic hydride complexes of lanthanide (Ln) and main-group (MG) metals exhibit chemical properties unique from their monometallic counterparts and are highly reactive species, making their synthesis and isolation challenging. Herein, molecular Ln/Al heterobimetallic trihydrides [Ln(Tp)2(μ-H)2Al(H)(N″)] [2-Ln; Ln = Y, Sm, Dy, Yb; Tp = hydrotris(1-pyrazolyl)borate; N″ = N(SiMe3)2] have been synthesized by facile insertion of aminoalane [Me3N·AlH3] into the Ln-N amide bonds of [Ln(Tp)2(N″)] (1-Ln). Thus, this is a simple synthetic strategy to access a range of Ln/Al hydrides. Reactivity studies demonstrate that 2-Ln is a heterobimetallic hydride, with evidence for the cooperative nature of 2-Ln shown by the catalytic amine-borane dehydrocoupling under ambient conditions in contrast to its monomeric counterparts.

Rare-earth metal ethylene and ethyne complexes

Guanidinate homometallic rare-earth ethyl complexes [LLn(μ2-η1:η2-Et)(Et)]2 (Ln = Y(1-Y), Lu(1-Lu)) and heterobimetallic rare-earth ethyl complexes LLn(Et)(μ2-η1:η2-Et)(μ2-η1-Et)(AlEt2) (Ln = Y(2-Y), Lu(2-Lu)) have been synthesized by the treatment of LLn(CH2C6H4NMe2-o)2 (L = (PhCH2)2NC(NC6H3iPr2-2,6)2) with different equivalents of AlEt3 in toluene at ambient temperature. Interestingly, the unprecedented rare-earth ethyne complex [LY(μ2-η1-Et)2(AlEt)]2(μ4-η1:η1:η2:η2-C2H2) (3-Y) containing a [C2H2]4- unit was afforded from 2-Y. The formation mechanism study on 3-Y was carried out by DFT calculations. Furthermore, the nature of the bonding of 3-Y was also revealed by NBO analysis. The reactions of LLn(CH2 C6H4NMe2-o)2 (Ln = Y, Lu) with AlEt3 (4 equiv.) in toluene at 50 °C produced firstly the non-Cp rare-earth ethylene complex LY(μ3-η1:η1:η2-C2H4)[(μ2-η1-Et)(AlEt2)(μ2-η1-Et)2(AlEt)] (4-Y), and the Y/Al ethyl complex LY[(μ2-η1-Et)2(AlEt2)]2 (5-Y) as an intermediate of 4-Y was isolated from the reaction of LY(CH2C6H4NMe2-o)2 with AlEt3 (4 equiv.) in toluene at -10 °C.

Triisobutylaluminium-promoted formation of lanthanide hydrides

Discrete lanthanide(III) isobutylaluminates Ln[N(SiMe₃)₂](HAliBu₃)(AliBu₄) (Ln = La, Pr, Nd) are obtained from Ln[N(SiMe₃)₂]₃ and triisobutylaluminium (TIBA). Nd[N(SiMe₃)₂](HAliBu₃)(AliBu₄) reacts with crown ether to give the ion pair [Nd(18-c-6){N(SiMe₃)₂}(HAliBu₃)][AliBu₄], featuring a strong Nd-H interaction in the solid state. The equimolar reaction of La[N(SiMe₃)₂](HAliBu₃)(AliBu₄) with fluorene resulted in the concomitant formation of [(μ-fluorenyl)₃La₂(μ-H)(HAliBu₃)₂] and (fluorenyl)₂La[N(SiMe₃)₂]. [(μ-Fluorenyl)₃La₂(μ-H)(HAliBu₃)₂] features fluorenyl ligands with a μ-η⁶:η⁶ coordination around the hydrido-bridged dilanthanum core motif. The reported complexes are the first crystallographically characterized, ancillary ligand-free lanthanide(III) tetraisobutylaluminates, and display potential model systems for Ziegler-type polymerization catalysis.

Molecular Main Group Metal Hydrides

This review serves to document advances in the synthesis, versatile bonding, and reactivity of molecular main group metal hydrides within Groups 1, 2, and 12-16. Particular attention will be given to the emerging use of said hydrides in the rapidly expanding field of Main Group element-mediated catalysis. While this review is comprehensive in nature, focus will be given to research appearing in the open literature since 2001.

Magnesium, zinc, aluminium and gallium hydride complexes of the transition metals

The preparation and applications of heterobimetallic complexes continue to occupy researchers in the fields of organometallic, main group, and coordination chemistry. This interest stems from the promise these complexes hold as precursors to materials, reagents in synthesis and as new catalysis. Here we survey and organise the state-of-the-art understanding of the TM-H-M linkage (M = Mg, Zn, Al, Ga). We discuss the structure and bonding in these complexes, their known reactivity, and their largely unrealised potential in catalysis.

Role(s) of TMA in polymerization

Quenched-flow data for propene polymerization with rac-Me2Si(2-Me-4-Ph-1-indenyl)2ZrCl2/MAO support a picture where removal of MAO qualitatively changes the kinetic profile from a mainly enthalpic to a mainly entropic barrier. DFT studies suggest that a not previously recognized singly-bridged end-on coordination mode of Me6Al2 to catalytically active centers may be kinetically relevant as a resting state. In contrast, the more traditional doubly-bridged complex of Me3Al is proposed to be more relevant to chain transfer to cocatalyst.
