Abstract
An I(III)-catalyzed oxidative cyclization reaction using selectfluor as the oxidant was developed that converts ortho-substituted anilines to benzimidazoles. The mild reaction requires as little as 0.5 mol % of iodobenzene, and its scope is broad: electron-withdrawing or electron-releasing groups on the aniline portion are tolerated, and cyclic or acyclic N-alkylamines are permitted as ortho-substituents. Preliminary mechanistic investigations suggest that benzimidazole formation occurs via cationic reactive intermediates, and an intramolecular kinetic isotope effect of 1.98 ± 0.05 was measured.

Abstract
In this investigation, an unprecedented transition-metal-free and redox-neutral synthesis of sulfilimines was realized through the S-arylation of readily obtainable sulfenamides employing diaryliodonium salts. The pivotal step encompassed the resonance between bivalent nitrogen-centered anions, engendered postdeprotonation of sulfenamides under alkaline conditions, and sulfinimidoyl anions. The experimental outcomes demonstrate that sulfinimidoyl anionic species function as efficacious nucleophilic reagents, affording sulfilimines with notable to exceptional yields and superlative chemoselectivity, all executed within a transition-metal-free protocol and under exceptionally mild conditions.

Abstract
We developed a direct metal-free S-arylation of phosphorothioate diesters using diaryliodonium salts. The method allows for the preparation under simple conditions of a broad range of S-aryl phosphorothioates, including complex molecules (e.g., dinucleotide or TADDOL derivatives), as well as other related organophosphorus compounds arylated at a chalcogen. The reaction proceeds with a full retention of the stereogenic center at the phosphorus atom, opening convenient access to P-chiral products. The mechanism of the reaction was established using DFT calculations.

Abstract
Hypervalent chloranes are a class of rare and poorly explored reagents. Their unique electronic properties confer reactivity that is complementary to that of the common iodanes and emerging bromanes. Highly chemo- and regioselective, metal-free, and mild C-C and C-O couplings are reported here. Experimental and computational mechanistic studies elucidate the unprecedented reactivities and selectivities of these systems and the intermediacy of aryne intermediates. The synthetic potential of these transformations is further demonstrated via the post-functionalization of C-C and C-O coupling products obtained from reactions of chloranes with phenols under different conditions.

Abstract
The metal-free synthesis of phenols from diaryliodonium salts with water was developed by using N-benzylpyridin-2-one as an organocatalyst. In this process, sterically congested, functionalized, and heterocycle-containing iodonium salts were smoothly converted to the desired products, and the clofibrate and mecloqualone derivatives were also synthesized in high yields. In addition, the gram-scale experiment was successfully carried out with 10 mmol of a sterically congested substrate.

Abstract
Herein, we demonstrate the application of unsymmetrical iodonium salts towards S-arylation of heterocyclic thiols (especially tetrazole-5-thiols and pyridine-2-thiol) under metal-free conditions, affording a diverse range of di(hetero)aryl thioethers in moderate to good yields. A detailed study on the effects of counter-anions and the auxiliary of iodonium salts was conducted. Suitable auxiliary selection of the unsymmetrical iodonium salt offers flexibility for a wide range of aryl moieties and its incorporation into S-arylation. The DFT study supports the experimental observations of chemoselective arylation.

Abstract
Diarylhalonium compounds provide new opportunities as reagents and catalysts in the field of organic synthesis. The three center, four electron (3c–4e) bond is a center piece of their reactivity, but structural variation among the diarylhaloniums, and in comparison with other λ3-iodanes, indicates that the model needs refinement for broader applicability. We use a combination of Density Functional Theory (DFT), Natural Bond Orbital (NBO) Theory, and X-ray structure data to correlate bonding and structure for a λ3-iodane and a series of diarylchloronium, bromonium, and iodonium salts, and their isoelectronic diarylchalcogen counterparts. This analysis reveals that the s-orbital on the central halogen atom plays a greater role in the 3c–4e bond than previously considered. Finally, we show that our revised bonding model and associated structures account for both kinetic and thermodynamic reactivity for both acyclic phenyl(mesityl)halonium and cyclic dibenzohalolium salts. A revised bonding model for diarylhalonium salts, that involves partial s-orbital contribution, provides new insight into periodic trends in structure and reactivity.![]()

Abstract
A diaryliodonium salt-based strategy enabled the first systematic synthesis of rarely accessible N-alkoxyindolines. Mechanistic analyses suggested that the reaction likely involves reductive elimination of iodobenzene from iodaoxazepine via a four-membered transition state, followed by Meisenheimer rearrangement. Substrates with N-carbamate protection afforded indole in a manner similar to that of the Ishikawa indole synthesis. Preinstallation of a stannyl group as an iodonium salt precursor greatly expanded the substrate scope, and further mechanistic insights are discussed.

Abstract
Arenes are broadly found motifs in societally important molecules. Access to diverse arene chemical space is critically important, and the ability to do so from common reagents is highly desirable. Aryl(TMP)iodonium tosylates provide one such access point to arene chemical space via diverse aryl intermediates. Here we demonstrate that controlling reaction pathways selectively leads to arynes with a broad scope of arenes and arynophiles (24 examples, 70% average yield) and efficient access to biologically active compounds.

Abstract
A transition metal-free approach for the N-arylation of amino acid derivatives has been developed. Key to this method is the use of unsymmetric diaryliodonium salts with anisyl ligands, which proved important to obtain high chemoselectivity and yields. The scope includes the transfer of both electron deficient, electron rich and sterically hindered aryl groups with a variety of different functional groups. Furthermore, a cyclic diaryliodonium salt was successfully employed in the arylation. The N-arylated products were obtained with retained enantiomeric excess.

Abstract
Metal-free N- and O-arylation reactions of pyridin-2-ones as ambident nucleophiles have been achieved with diaryliodonium salts on the basis of base-dependent chemoselectivity. In the presence of N,N-diethylaniline in fluorobenzene, pyridin-2-ones were very selectively converted to N-arylated products in high yields. On the other hand, the O-arylation reactions smoothly proceeded with the use of quinoline in chlorobenzene, leading to high yields and selectivities. In these methods, a variety of pyridin-2-ones in addition to pyridin-4-one and a set of diaryliodonium salts were accepted as suitable reaction partners.

Abstract
By using vicinal aryl sulfonamide substituted diaryliodonium salts, a cascade of desulfonylation/aryl migration was promoted by triethylamine in the synthesis of sterically hindered biarylamines, which operated via a radical-induced reaction pathway. The products were readily converted into a variety of important synthons. Furthermore, coupling reactions of N-methyl biarylamine and 1,6-dibromopyrene provided a potentially attractive molecule in OLEDs.

Abstract
Recent developments in experimental and computational chemistry have identified a rapidly growing class of nucleophilic aromatic substitutions that proceed by concerted (cSN Ar) rather than classical, two-step, SN Ar mechanisms. Whereas traditional SN Ar reactions require substantial activation of the aromatic ring by electron-withdrawing substituents, such activating groups are not mandatory in the concerted pathways.

Abstract
By using vicinal trifluoromethanesulfonate-substituted diaryliodonium salts, a novel approach was developed for the synthesis of ortho-iodo diaryl ethers by intramolecular aryl migration. The reaction conditions are mild with a broad substrate scope. Mechanistic insight suggests a sulfonyl-directed nucleophilic aromatic substitution pathway. Additionally, the product ortho-iodo diaryl ethers serve as versatile synthons as demonstrated with several coupling reactions. Furthermore, a useful thyroxine analogue of the 3-iodo-l-thyronine (3-T1 ) derivative was synthesized by this aryl migration procedure.

Abstract
A transition metal‐free N‐arylation of primary and secondary amines with diaryliodonium salts is presented. Both acyclic and cyclic amines are well tolerated, providing a large set of N‐alkyl anilines. The methodology is unprecedented among metal‐free methods in terms of amine scope, the ability to transfer both electron‐withdrawing and electron‐donating aryl groups, and efficient use of resources, as excess substrate or reagents are not required.

Abstract
A transition metal-free formal synthesis of phenoxazine is presented. The key step of the sequence is a high-yielding O-arylation of a phenol with an unsymmetrical diaryliodonium salt to provide an ortho-disubstituted diaryl ether. This species was cyclized to acetylphenoxazine in moderate yield. The overall yield in the three-step sequence is 72% based on recovered diaryl ether. An interesting, unusually stable iodine(III) intermediate in the O-arylation was observed by NMR and could be converted to the product upon longer reaction time.

Abstract
C(sp3)-H bond functionalization has emerged as a robust tool enabling rapid construction of molecular complexity from simple building blocks, and the development of asymmetric versions of this reaction creates a powerful methodology to access enantiopure sp3-rich materials. Herein, we report the stereoselective functionalization of C(sp3)-H bonds of cyclic ethers employing a photochemically active diaryliodonium salt in combination with an anionic phase-transfer catalyst. The synthetic strategy outlined herein allows for regio- and stereochemical control in the α-C-H acetalization of furans and pyrans using alcohol nucleophiles, thus providing the ability to control the configuration at the stereogenic exocyclic acetal carbon.

Abstract
With a strategy of the formation of benzynes by using diaryliodonium salts, a cycloaddition reaction of N-arylpyrroles with benzynes was reported. A wide range of bridge-ring amines with various substituents have been synthesized in moderate to excellent yields (35-96%). Furthermore, with a catalytic amount of TsOH·H2O, these amines can be converted into the corresponding N-phenylamine derivatives easily, which are potentially useful in photosensitive dyes.

Abstract
Because of its hyper-leaving ability, as well as its strong oxidizing ability, diaryl(triflato)-λ3-iodane transfers one of the aryl groups to iodoarenes simply upon gentle heating (>85 °C) in nonpolar solvents. We have performed an in-depth mechanistic study of this unusual aryl transfer reaction. A combination of experimental (product analysis, kinetic study, and substituent effects) and density functional theoretical approaches revealed that the reaction proceeds through a concerted bimolecular transition state, in which ipso-carbon binds loosely to both iodine centers. We also evaluated electronic effects on the thermodynamic stability of diaryl-λ3-iodanes.

Abstract
A mechanistic study of arylations of aliphatic alcohols and hydroxide with diaryliodonium salts, to give alkyl aryl ethers and diaryl ethers, has been performed using experimental techniques and DFT calculations. Aryne intermediates have been trapped, and additives to avoid by-product formation originating from arynes have been found. An alcohol oxidation pathway was observed in parallel to arylation; this is suggested to proceed by an intramolecular mechanism. Product formation pathways via ligand coupling and arynes have been compared, and 4-coordinated transition states were found to be favored in reactions with alcohols. Furthermore, a novel, direct nucleophilic substitution pathway has been identified in reactions with electron-deficient diaryliodonium salts.
