Dysprosium Single-Molecule Magnets with Bulky Schiff Base Ligands: Modification of the Slow Relaxation of the Magnetization by Substituent Change

Assembly of a Heterotrimetallic Zn2Dy2Ir Pentanuclear Complex toward Multifunctional Molecular Materials

Rational selection of metal ions and organic ligands to synthesize metal-organic complexes (MOCs) is necessary for constructing multifunctional materials. Herein, we have obtained a novel heterotrimetallic Zn₂Dy₂Ir pentanuclear MOC by the assembly of Dy^III, luminescent Zn^II(valpn), and [Ir^III(H₂L)(ppy)₂]Cl metalloligands (Hppy = 2-phenylpyridine, H₂L = 2,2'-bipyridine-5,5'-di-p-benzoic acid). Single-crystal structural analysis shows that the central [Ir^III(L)(ppy)₂]^- bridges two ZnDy moieties using two carboxylates of L^2-. Measurements of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) show that the maximum luminance is 284.2 cd/m² and the turn-on voltage is 6 V. Magnetic studies reveal that Zn₂Dy₂Ir is a field-induced single-molecule magnet (SMM) with an energy barrier of 19.1(2) K under a 2 kOe dc field. Zn₂Dy₂Ir shows luminescence sensing with a quenching efficiency of up to 99.0% for 2,4,6-trinitrophenol (TNP).

Using N-Heterocyclic Carbenes as Weak Equatorial Ligands to Design Single-Molecule Magnets: Zero-Field Slow Relaxation in Two Octahedral Dysprosium(III) Complexes

We report the synthesis, structures, and magnetic investigations of two new octahedral dysprosium complexes, based on the original N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) tridentate bis(phenoxide) ligand, of the respective formulas mer-[DyL(THF)₂Cl] (1) and mer-[DyL(THF)₃][BPh₄] (2), where L = 1,3-bis(3,5-di-tert-butyl-2-oxidophenyl)-5,5-dimethyl-3,4,5,6-tetrahydropyrimidin-1-ium chloride and THF = tetrahydrofuran. The short Dy-O distances in the axial direction in association with the weak donor ability of the NHC moiety provide a suitable environment for slow relaxation of magnetization, overcoming the previous single-molecule magnets based on NHC ligands.

2-Imino-2,3-dihydrobenzoxazole-a useful platform for designing rare- and alkaline earth complexes with variable di- and trianionic O,N,N, ligands

The reactions of 2-imino-2,3-dihydrobenzoxazole LH with M[N(SiMe₃)₂]₂(THF)₂ (M = Yb and Ca) and Y(CH₂SiMe₃)₃(THF)₂ proceed with the opening of the dihydrobenzoxazole ring and the elimination of HN(SiMe₃)₂ or SiMe₄. Besides, in the case of Yb[N(SiMe₃)₂]₂(THF)₂, an electron transfer from Yb(II) to L takes place and Yb(III) complex 1 is coordinated by a dianionic phenolate ligand containing a pendant radical-anionic diazabutadiene fragment form. When LH is reacted with Ca[N(SiMe₃)₂]₂(THF)₂, C-H bond activation of a methyl fragment by imino nitrogen occurs and affords a dimeric calcium complex 2. In 2, the phenolate ligand is dianionic due to the presence of the amido-imino fragment [R-NC(CH₃)-C(CH₂)-NR']^- (R = 2,4-tBu₂-C₆H₂O; R' = 2,6-iPr₂C₆H₃). In situ generated ate-complex {Na(Et₂O)_n}{Ca[N(SiMe₃)₂]₃} also enables C-H bond activation, however the dianionic phenolate ligand in the resulting complex 3 contains an amido-imino fragment [R-N-C(CH₂)-C(CH₃)NR']^- featuring the sequence of N-C and NC bonds opposite to that in 2. The reaction of Y(CH₂SiMe₃)₃(THF)₂ with LH affords mono(alkyl) yttrium complex 4. 4 contains a dianionic amido-imino phenolate ligand resulting from the migration of one alkyl group to the CN bond [R-N-C(Me)(CH₂SiMe₃)-C(Me)NR']. 4 undergoes slow intramolecular C-H bond activation of the residual CH₃ group to afford a yttrium complex coordinated by a trianionic diamido-phenolate ligand [R-N-C(Me)(CH₂SiMe₃)-C(CH₂)NR'].

Macrocycle supported dinuclear lanthanide complexes with different β-diketonate co-ligands displaying zero field single-molecule magnetic behaviour

Three different sets of isomorphous dinuclear Gd/Dy complexes with an uncommon macrocyclic ligand and β-diketonate co-ligands were reported in which Dy2 analogues are zero field SMMs.

Enhancing the Magnetic Anisotropy in Low-Symmetry Dy-Based Complexes by Tuning the Bond Length

One mononuclear complex [Dy(Htpy)(NO₃)₂(acac)] (1) and a tpy^--extended 1D chain {[Dy(CH₃OH)(NO₃)₂(tpy)]·CH₃OH}_n (2) (Htpy = 4'-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-2,2':6',2''-terpyridine, Hacac = acetylacetone) were successfully designed to investigate the effect of bond length tuning around the Dy^III cation on the magnetic dynamics of single-molecule magnets (SMMs). Interestingly, two magnetic entities possess the same local coordination sphere (N₃O₆-donor) as well as the configuration (Muffin, C_s) of dysprosium centers. Only a slight difference in structure results from purposefully substituting the acetylacetone ligand in 1 with hydroxyl oxygen from tpy^- linkage and one methanol molecule in 2. However, the remarkable differences in dynamics behavior were clearly found between them. Compound 1 possesses a thermal-activated effective energy barrier (U_eff/k_B) of 22.7 K under a 0 kOe direct current (dc) field and negligible hysteresis loop at 2.0 K, while complex 2 shows high-performance SMM behavior with the largest energy barrier of 354.36 K among the reported nine-coordinated Dy^III-based systems and the magnetic hysteresis up to 4.0 K at a sweep rate of 200 Oe s^-1. These experimental results combined with the previous reported data reveal that the shortest bond and the bond length difference around the Dy^III center synergistically determine the dynamics of SMMs. The uniaxial anisotropy increases with the decrease of the shortest bond and the increase of the bond length difference, which is confirmed by the theoretical calculations.

Mononuclear Dysprosium Alkoxide and Aryloxide Single-Molecule Magnets

Recent studies have shown that mononuclear lanthanide (Ln) complexes can be high‐performing single‐molecule magnets (SMMs). Recently, there has been an influx of mononuclear Ln alkoxide and aryloxide SMMs, which have provided the necessary geometrical control to improve SMM properties and to allow the intricate relaxation dynamics of Ln SMMs to be studied in detail. Here non‐aqueous Ln alkoxide and aryloxide chemistry applied to the synthesis of low‐coordinate mononuclear Ln SMMs are reviewed. The focus is on mononuclear Dy^III alkoxide and aryloxide SMMs with coordination numbers up to eight, covering synthesis, solid‐state structures and magnetic attributes. Brief overviews are also provided of mononuclear Tb^III, Ho^III, Er^III and Yb^III alkoxide and aryloxide SMMs.

High magnetization reversal barriers in luminescent dysprosium octahedral and pentagonal bipyramidal single-molecule magnets based on fluorinated alkoxide ligands

We report the synthesis and structures of three luminescent dysprosium(iii) complexes based on fluorinated alkoxide ligands of formulas [Dy(L1)2(THF)4][BPh4]·0.5THF (1), [Dy(L2)2(THF)5][BPh4]·2.5THF (2) and [Dy(L3)2(THF)5][BPh4]·2THF (3) (L1 = (CF3)3CO-, L2 = C6F5C6F4O-, L3 = C6F5C(CH3)O-). Despite the different dysprosium ion geometries (octahedral vs. distorted pentagonal bipyramidal), these systems exhibit a single-molecule magnet (SMM) behavior, but with distinct relaxation dynamics. Moreover, a typical dysprosium-based luminescence is observed for the three complexes, which make them bifunctional magneto-luminescent SMMs. Remarkably, complex 3 exhibits a high anisotropy barrier of 1469 cm-1 and a blocking temperature of 22 K, making it one of the most performant alkoxide-based SMMs with the highest blocking temperature for a luminescent SMM.

Macrocycle supported dimetallic lanthanide complexes with slow magnetic relaxation in Dy2 analogues

Six dimetallic lanthanide complexes, [Ln2(L')(acac)4] (1Dy-3Gd) (Ln = Dy (1Dy), Tb (2Tb) and Gd (3Gd)) and [Ln2(L')(tfac)4] (4Dy-6Gd) (Ln = Dy (4Dy), Tb (5Tb) and Gd (6Gd)) (H2L' = 1,9-dichloro-3,7,11,15-tetraaza-1,9(1,3)-dibenzenacyclohexadecaphane-2,10-diene-1,9-diol), have been synthesized by the reaction of lanthanide nitrates with the HL ligand in the presence of acetylacetonate (acac) (or trifluoroacetylacetonate (tfac) and triethylamine (HL = 4-chloro-2,6-bis(-((3-((3-(dimethylamino)propyl)amino)propyl)imino)methyl)phenol). Ln-Assisted modification of the Schiff base HL occurred and led to the formation of a new macrocyclic ligand (H2L'). X-ray crystallographic analysis revealed that the LnIII ions of complexes 1Dy-6Gd are all eight-coordinated in a square antiprismatic geometry with D4d local symmetry. Magnetic measurements of these complexes revealed that 1Dy and 4Dy show single-molecule magnet behaviour with energy barriers of 66.7 and 79.0 K, respectively, under a zero direct magnetic field. The orientations of the magnetic axes and crystal field parameters were obtained from theoretical calculations and an electrostatic model. The magneto-structural correlations of SMMs 1Dy and 4Dy are further discussed in detail.

Synthesis, Structure, Magnetic and Photoluminescent Properties of Dysprosium(III) Schiff Base Single-Molecule Magnets: Investigation of the Relaxation of the Magnetization

We report here the synthesis, structure, magnetic and photoluminescent properties of three new bifunctional Schiff-base complexes [Dy(L₁ )₂ (py)₂ ][B(Ph)₄ ]⋅py (1), [Dy(L₁ )₂ Cl(DME)] ⋅ 0.5DME (2) and [Dy(L₂ )₂ Cl] ⋅ 2.5(C₇ H₈ ) (3) (HL₁ =Phenol, 2,4-bis(1,1-dimethylethyl)-6-[[(2-methoxy-5-methylphenyl)imino]methyl]; HL₂ =Phenol, 2,4-bis(1,1-dimethylethyl)-6-[[(2-methoxyphenyl)imino]methyl]). The coordination environment of the Dy³⁺ ion and the direction of the anisotropic axis may be controlled by the combination of the substituent groups of the Schiff bases, the nature of the counter-ions (Cl^- vs. BPh₄ ^- ) and the coordinative solvent molecules. A zero-field slow relaxation of the magnetization is evidenced for all complexes but strong differences in the relaxation dynamics are observed depending on the Dy³⁺ site geometry. In this sense, complex 1 exhibits an anisotropy barrier of 472 cm^-1 _, which may be favourably compared to other related examples due to the shortening of the Dy-O bond in the axial direction. Besides, the three complexes exhibit a ligand-based luminescence making them as bifunctional magneto-luminescent systems.

Single-molecule magnet behavior in heterolopetic Dy3+-chloro-diazabutadiene complexes: influence of the nuclearity and ligand redox state

We report the synthesis, structure and magnetic properties investigations of a series of new dysprosium mono- and dinuclear chloro complexes based on different diazabutadiene ligands (DAD^2R = [2,6-iPr₂C₆H₃N–CRCR–NC₆H₃iPr₂-2,6]; R = H, Me).

Single-molecule magnet behavior in luminescent carbazolyl Dy(iii) octahedral complexes with a quasi linear N--Dy-N- angle

We report the synthesis, photoluminescence and magnetic properties of two octahedral dysprosium complexes [DyR2(py)4][BPh4]·2py (1) and [DyR2(THF)4][BPh4] (2) (R = carbazolyl, py = pyridine, THF = tetrahydrofuran) exhibiting a quasi linear N-Dy-N angle in the axial direction, suitable for providing a coordination environment allowing the zero-field slow relaxation of magnetization.

Coumarin-lanthanide based compounds with SMM behavior and high quantum yield luminescence

Coumarin-based lanthanide complexes of general formula [Ln(coum)3(phen)(H2O)x]·yH2O (Ln-phen, x = 0,1, 0 ≤ y ≤ 1.5; phen = 1,10-phenanthroline; coum = 3-acetyl-4-hydroxylato-coumarin; Ln = Eu, Tb, Dy, Tm) and [Ln(coum)3(batho)]·0.7EtOH (Ln-batho, batho = 4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline; Ln = Eu, Tb, Dy, Tm) were synthesized. The magnetic relaxation and photoluminescence behavior of these complexes was compared with that of the related compounds [Ln(coum)3(EtOH)(H2O)]·EtOH (Ln-coum), so as to investigate the effects of incorporating a second chromophore, either the phen or batho ligand, to the original coordination scaffold, provided with three coumarin (coum) ligands. Slow relaxation of the magnetization under H = 0 with moderate activation energies was observed for the Dy-phen (U/kB = 99.1 K) and Dy-batho (U/kB = 67.1 K) compounds, whereas Tb analogues presented field-induced single molecule magnet (SMM) behavior, with U/kB = 11.7 K (16.6 K@3 kOe) for Tb-phen (Tb-batho), respectively. Luminescent emission in the visible range was observed for all the Ln-coumarin based compounds upon ligand sensitization, with high quantum yields of 45 (40%) for Eu-phen (Eu-batho) compounds and 65-76-58% for Tb-coum, phen, batho analogues. Sensitization is mainly provided by the coumarin ligand having the energy difference ΔE between its triplet state T1 and the lanthanide emitting level closest to the optimum, while the second ligand can play either a synergistic or competing sensitizing role. The Tb-phen/batho compounds presented simultaneously SMM and luminescent behavior, with excellent values of the bifunctional figure of merit (ηSMM-QY ∼ 1000% K). The reported compounds represent a new class of bifunctional materials with potential interesting application in various fields.

Correlation between Slow Magnetic Relaxations and Molecular Structures of Dy(III) Complexes with N5O4 Nona-Coordination

A series of Dy(III) mononuclear complexes [DyA2L]+ (L denotes Schiff base N5 ligand that occupies equatorial positions and A− denotes bidentate anionic O-donor ligands such as NO3− (1), AcO− (2), and acac− (3)) were synthesized to investigate the correlation between the slow magnetic relaxation phenomena and the coordination structures around Dy(III). The Dy(III) ion in each complex is in a nona-coordination with the anionic O-donor ligand occupying up- and down-side positions of the N5 equatorial plane. 2 and 3 show slow magnetic relaxation phenomena under a zero bias-field condition, and all complexes showed slow magnetic relaxation under the applied 1000-Oe bias-field conditions. Arrhenius analyses revealed that the ΔE/kB, the barrier height for magnetization flipping, increases in this order, with the values of 24.1(6), 85(3), and 140(15) K. The effects of the exchanging axial ligands on the magnetic anisotropy were discussed together with the DFT calculations.

Luminescent Schiff-Base Lanthanide Single-Molecule Magnets: The Association Between Optical and Magnetic Properties

Luminescent Single-Molecule Magnets (SMM) belong to a new class of multifunctional molecule-materials that associate luminescence and slow relaxation of their magnetization within a single crystalline phase. We present in this mini-review the major advances that have been achieved in this new field over the last few years. More particularly, we will focus on the use of Schiff-base complexes in order to correlate magnetism and luminescence, as well as discussing the future outlooks of the field.

Modulation of the directions of the anisotropic axes of DyIII ions through utilizing two kinds of organic ligands or replacing DyIII ions by FeIII ions

Two complexes based on Dy₄ or Fe₂Dy₂ tetrahedral unit have been obtained by employing mixed organic ligands. The directions of the easy magnetization for the Dy^III in both complexes were successfully modulated.
