Quantifying Source Apportionment, Co-occurrence, and Ecotoxicological Risk of Metals from Upstream, Lower Midstream, and Downstream River Segments, Bangladesh

Metals and phosphorus in the sediments of streams emptying into the Çanakkale strait (Dardanelles): Spatial distribution, pollution status, risk assessment and source identification

The Çanakkale Strait is exposed to various pollutants due to its strategic location. It is thought that stream inputs may contribute significantly to metal and phosphorus (P) accumulation in the strait. In this study, the spatial distribution, pollution status, ecological risks and possible sources of twelve metals and P in the sediments of seven important streams emptying into the strait were analyzed. The results showed that Zn (226 mg/kg), Ba (67.2 mg/kg) and Pb (10.4 mg/kg) concentrations were higher in the Umurbey Stream due to mining activities, while P concentration (295 mg/kg) was higher in the Çanakkale Stream due to both agricultural activities and domestic wastewater discharges. Modified hazard quotient (mHQ), enrichment factor (EF) and contamination factor (Cf) values revealed that Zn and Pb showed high and moderate contamination in the US3 and US4 sampling sites of the Umurbey Stream, respectively. Similarly, P showed moderate contamination in the ÇS3 site of the Çanakkale Stream. Nemerow pollution index (NPI) showed that the US3 (2.41) and US4 (4.28) sites of the Umurbey Stream were slightly and moderately polluted, respectively. Toxic risk index (TRI) values demonstrated that the sediments in only the US4 site (5.17) of the Umurbey Stream may pose a low toxic risk due to high Zn content. Similarly, based on comparison results with sediment quality guidelines (SQGs), it was found that high Zn content may lead to adverse effects on sediment-dwelling organisms in the US4 site. In addition, the PEC-quotient value in the US4 site exceeded 0.5, confirming the finding that the sediments in this site could be toxic to benthic organisms. Finally, correlation, cluster and factor analyzes were used to determine possible sources of elements. Mining activities, natural sources and mixed sources (agricultural activities and natural sources) were identified as the main sources of elements in the sediments of the streams. This study can provide an important reference for evaluating stream sediment pollution and managing marine pollution.

Assessing metal(loid)s-Induced long-term spatiotemporal health risks in Coastal Regions, Bay of Bengal: A chemometric study

Despite sporadic and irregular studies on heavy metal(loid)s health risks in water, fish, and soil in the coastal areas of the Bay of Bengal, no chemometric approaches have been applied to assess the human health risks comprehensively. This review aims to employ chemometric analysis to evaluate the long-term spatiotemporal health risks of metal(loid)s e.g., Fe, Mn, Zn, Cd, As, Cr, Pb, Cu, and Ni in coastal water, fish, and soils from 2003 to 2023. Across coastal parts, studies on metal(loid)s were distributed with 40% in the southeast, 28% in the south-central, and 32% in the southwest regions. The southeastern area exhibited the highest contamination levels, primarily due to elevated Zn content (156.8 to 147.2 mg/L for Mn in water, 15.3 to 13.2 mg/kg for Cu in fish, and 50.6 to 46.4 mg/kg for Ni in soil), except for a few sites in the south-central region. Health risks associated with the ingestion of Fe, As, and Cd (water), Ni, Cr, and Pb (fish), and Cd, Cr, and Pb (soil) were identified, with non-carcinogenic risks existing exclusively through this route. Moreover, As, Cr, and Ni pose cancer risks for adults and children via ingestion in the southeastern region. Overall non-carcinogenic risks emphasized a significantly higher risk for children compared to adults, with six, two-, and six-times higher health risks through ingestion of water, fish, and soils along the southeastern coast. The study offers innovative sustainable management strategies and remediation policies aimed at reducing metal(loid)s contamination in various environmental media along coastal Bangladesh.

Elevated levels of environmental radioactivity in fluvial sediment: origin and health risk assessment

To study the geogenic processes of naturally occurring radioactive materials' (NORMs') distribution, a transboundary Himalayan river (Punarbhaba) is chosen due to its trivial anthropogenic impacts. In explaining the genesis of radionuclides, transition elements (Sc, Ti, V, and Fe), rare-earth-elements (REEs: La, Eu, Ce, Yb, Sm, and Lu), Ta, Hf, Th, and U were analysed in 30 riverbed sediments collected from the Bangladeshi portion of the river. Elemental abundances and NORMs' activity were measured by neutron activation analysis and HPGe-gamma-spectrometry, respectively. Averagen=30 radioactivity concentrations of 226Ra (68.4 Bq kg-1), 232Th (85.7 Bq kg-1), and 40K (918 Bq kg-1) were 2.0-2.3-fold higher, which show elevated results compared to the corresponding world mean values. Additionally, mean-REE abundances were 1.02-1.38-times higher than those of crustal origin. Elevated (relative to earth-crust) ratios of Th/U (=3.95 ± 1.84) and 232Th/40K and statistical demonstrations invoke Th-dominant heavy minerals, indicating the role of kaolinite clay mineral abundance/granitic presence. However, Th/Yb, La/V, Hf/Sc, and Th/Sc ratios reveal the presence of felsic abundances, hydrodynamic sorting, and recycling of sedimentary minerals. Geo-environmental indices demonstrated the enrichment of chemical elements in heavy minerals, whereas radiological indices presented ionizing radiation concerns, e.g., the average absorbed-gamma-dose rate (123.1 nGy h-1) was 2.24-fold higher compared to the threshold value which might cause chronic health impacts depending on the degree of exposure. The mean excess lifetime cancer risk value for carcinogen exposure was 5.29 × 10-4 S v-1, which is ∼2-times greater than the suggested threshold. Therefore, plausible extraction of heavy minerals and using residues as building materials can alleviate the two-reconciling problems: (1) radiological risk management and (2) fluvial navigability.

Analysis of soil fertility and toxic metal characteristics in open-pit mining areas in northern Shaanxi

The study specifically focused on the Hongliulin mining area, where a total of 40 soil samples were meticulously collected and analyzed from within a 1000 m radius extending from the tailings dam. The findings revealed that soil pH within the 0-1000 m range generally leaned towards the alkaline side. In terms of soil nutrient content, encompassing factors such as soil organic matter (SOM), total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), total potassium (TK), alkali nitrogen (AK), available phosphorus (AP), and quick-acting potassium (AK), the variations fell within the following ranges: 2.23-13.58 g/kg, 0.12-0.73 g/kg, 0.18-1.15 g/kg, 9.54-35.82 g/kg, 2.89-6.76 mg/kg, 3.45-11.25 mg/kg, and 5.86-130.9 mg/kg. Collectively, these values indicate relatively low levels of soil nutrients. Within the 0-500 m range of soil samples, the average concentrations of Cd, Hg, Pb, and As were 0.778, 0.198, 24.87, and 17.92 mg/kg, respectively. These concentrations exceeded the established soil background values of Shaanxi Province and emerged as the primary pollutants in the study area. Within this same range, the mean values of eight toxic metals (Pi) were ranked in the following descending order: 1.726 (Hg), 1.400 (As), 1.129 (Cr), 1.109 (Pb), 0.623 (Zn), 0.536 (Cd), 0.309 (Cu), and 0.289 (Ni). With the exception of Hg, As, Cr, and Pb, which exhibited slight pollution, the other toxic metals were found to be within acceptable pollution limits for this sampling range, in line with the results obtained using the geo-accumulation index method. The average potential ecological risk index for the eight toxic metals in the study area stood at 185.0, indicating a moderate overall pollution level. When assessing individual elements, the proportions of ecological risk attributed to Hg, As, Pb, and Cd were 34.57%, 27.44%, 25.11%, and 23.11%, respectively. This suggests that the primary potential ecological risk elements in the study area are Hg and As, followed by Cd and Pb. Notably, toxic metals Hg and Pb, as well as As and Pb, exhibited significant positive correlations within the sampling area, suggesting a common source. An analysis of the relationship between soil physicochemical properties and toxic metals indicated that soil pH, SOM, TN, and TP were closely linked to toxic metal concentrations. The toxic metal elements in the research area's soil exhibit moderate variability (0.16 < CV < 0.36) to high variability (CV > 0.36). Within the range of 0-200 m, the CV values for Cd and Hg exceed 1, indicating a high level of variability. The coefficient of variation for SOM, TP, AP, AK and TK is relatively high with the of 2.93, 2.36, 2.36, 21.01, 7.54. The soil in the sampling area has undergone significant disturbances due to human activities, resulting in toxic metal pollution and nutrient deficiencies.

Receptor model-based source-specific health risks of toxic metal(loid)s in coal basin-induced agricultural soil in northwest Bangladesh

Toxic metal(loid)s (TMLs) in agricultural soils cause detrimental effects on ecosystem and human health. Therefore, source-specific health risk apportionment is very crucial for the prevention and control of TMLs in agricultural soils. In this study, 149 surface soil samples were taken from a coal mining region in northwest Bangladesh and analyzed for 12 TMLs (Pb, Cd, Ni, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Zn, Cu, As, Se, and Hg). Positive matrix factorization (PMF) and absolute principal component score-multiple linear regression (APCS-MLR) receptor models were employed to quantify the pollution sources of soil TMLs. Both models identified five possible sources of pollution: agrochemical practice, industrial emissions, coal-power-plant, geogenic source, and atmospheric deposition, while the contribution rates of each source were calculated as 28.2%, 17.2%, 19.3%, 19% and 16.3% in APCS-MLR, 22.2%, 13.4%, 24.3%, 15.1% and 25.1% in PMF, respectively. Agrochemical practice was the major source of non-carcinogenic risk (NCR) (adults: 32.37%, children: 31.54%), while atmospheric deposition was the highest source of carcinogenic risk (CR) (adults: 48.83%, children: 50.11%). NCR and CR values for adults were slightly higher than for children. However, the trends in NCR and CR between children and adults were similar. As a result, among the sources of pollution, agrochemical practices and atmospheric deposition have been identified as the primary sources of soil TMLs, so prevention and control strategies should be applied primarily for these pollution sources in order to protect human health.

Hydrochemistry, water quality and health risk assessment of streams in Bismil plain, an important agricultural area in southeast Türkiye

In this study, the water quality of Ambar, Kuruçay, Pamuk and Salat streams, which are the important tributaries of the Tigris River in the Bismil Plain (Diyarbakır, Türkiye) was assessed using 19 physicochemical parameters. Except for a few exceptions, all parameters in the water samples taken from the streams were below the drinking water limit values. Kuruçay Stream had significantly higher TOC, Na+, NO3-, NO2-, Cl- and SO42- levels and lower DO levels than other streams (p < 0.05) due to sewage water discharges, animal manure storage areas near the stream and irrigation return flows. In all streams, Ca-HCO3 was dominant water type. Gibbs diagram indicated that rock weathering is the major factor controlling the hydrochemistry of the streams. According to the results of water quality index (WQI), all sampling stations of Ambar, Pamuk and Salat streams and K1 station of Kuruçay Stream had "good" quality water for drinking purposes, while K2 station of Kuruçay Stream had "poor" quality water. Irrigation indices (permeability index, sodium percentage, magnesium hazard, residual sodium carbonate, Kelley's ratio, sodium adsorption ratio and potential salinity) revealed that all water samples taken from the streams were suitable for irrigation. The water samples from Ambar, Pamuk and Salat streams were in the C2S1 (medium salinity and low alkalinity) category, while the samples from Kuruçay Stream were in the C2S1 and C3S1 (high salinity and low alkalinity) categories. Both hazard quotient and hazard index values of NO3-N, NO2-N and F- for children and adults were found below 1, indicating that adverse health effects are not expected from exposure to these contaminants via water ingestion and dermal contact. The findings of this study showed that the water quality status of Kuruçay Stream is worse as it receives large amounts of irrigation return flows compared to other streams.

Human exposures to multiple water sources in the southwestern coastal region of Bangladesh: water quality, pollution sources, and preliminary health risks appraisals

The coastal areas of Bangladesh have poor accessibility to fresh drinking water and the groundwater is not suitable for drinking, cooking, and other domestic uses due to high levels of salinity and potentially toxic elements. The current study focuses on understanding of the distribution of some physicochemical parameters (temperature, pH, EC, TDS, and salinity) and chemical elements (Fe, Mn, Zn, Ca, Mg, Na, K, Cu, Co, Pb, As, Cr, Cd, and Ni) with health perspective in drinking water from the southwestern coastal area of Bangladesh. The physicochemical properties of the water samples were examined with a multiparameter meter, while the elemental concentrations were analyzed using atomic absorption spectrometer. Water quality index (WQI) and irrigation indices were utilized to determine the drinking water quality and irrigation feasibility, respectively, whereas hazard quotients (HQs) and hazard index (HI) were used to assess the probable pathways and the associated potential risks to human health. The concentrations of some toxic elements in measured samples were relatively higher compared to drinking water guidelines, indicating that ground and surface water are not apt for drinking and/or domestic uses. The multivariate statistical approaches linked the source of the pollutants in the studied water body mostly to the geogenic origin including saline water intrusion. WQI values ranged from 18 to 430, reflecting excellent to unsuitable categories of water quality. The assessment of human health risks due to exposure to contaminated water demonstrated both carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic health risks in the exposed residents of the study area. Therefore, appropriate long-term coastal area management strategies should be adopted in the study region for environmental sustainability. The findings of this research will be supportive in understanding the actual situation of fresh drinking water in the area for policymakers, planners, and environmentalists to take effective necessary measures to ensure safe drinking water in the study area.

Risk assessment and source apportionment for metals in sediments of Kaptai Lake in Bangladesh using individual and synergistic indices and a receptor model

Metal enrichment in lake sediments originating from multiple sources can threaten both the aquatic ecosystem and human health. Therefore, assessment of the eco-environmental risks and potential sources of metals in the sediments is essential for effective lake management. Here, we analyzed the sediment metal contents of Kaptai Lake, the largest lake in Bangladesh for the first time with this study. The results indicated that only Cr and Ni contents among the metals studied exceeded the probable effect concentrations (PEC) at 25.42 % and 55.93 % of the sampling stations, respectively. All metals at most sampling stations showed low contamination and low ecological risk based on the individual indices (geoaccumulation index, contamination factor, ecological risk factor, enrichment factor and modified hazard quotient). There was no significant risk from the combined metals in the sediments of the lake according to the synergistic indices (toxic risk index, Nemerow risk index, ecological risk index, Nemerow pollution index and pollution load index). Organic matter and silt were significant sediment parameters that favored the accumulation of Cr, Fe, Cu, Pb and Mn. In the absolute principle component scores-multiple linear regression model (APCS-MLR), five potential sources of metals were identified in the sediments: Zn, Mn, Co and Cd mainly from natural sources and to a lesser extent from agricultural and aquacultural activities, Ni, Cr and Fe from parent materials, Pb and Cu mainly from natural sources and to a lesser extent from vehicle emissions, Hg and U from lithogenic sources, and As from natural sources. This study will improve our knowledge of the sedimentary metal contents of Kaptai Lake and provide helpful information for developing effective lake management and pollution control strategies.

Risk source identification and diffusion trends of metal(loid)s in stream sediments from an abandoned arsenic-containing mine

Stream sediments from mine area are a converging source of water and soil pollution. The risk and development trends of metal(loid)s pollution in sediments from an abandoned arsenic-containing mine were studied using modelling techniques. The results showed that the combined techniques of geographic information system (GIS), random forest (RF), and numerical simulation (NS) could identify risk sources and diffusion trends of metal(loid)s in mine sediments. The median values of As, Cd, Hg, and Sb in sediments were 5.01, 3.02, 5.67, and 3.20 times of the background values of stream sediments in China, respectively. As (14.09%) and Hg (18.64%) pollution in mine stream sediments were severe while As is the main potential risk source with a strong spatial correlation. High-risk blocks were concentrated in the landfill area, with the surrounding pollution shows a decreasing trend of "step-type" pollution. The risk correlation between Hg and As (55.37%) in the landfill area is high. As a case of arsenic, the diffusion capacity of As within 500m is strong and stabilizes at 1 km when driven by the flows of 0.05, 0.5, and 5 m³/s, respectively. With the worst-case scenario flow (86 m³/s), it would take only 147 days for the waters within 3 km to become highly polluted. The high pollution levels in a stream under forecast of different distance intervals (500, 1500, 2000 m) within 6.5 km is arrived at approximate 344, 357, and 384 days, respectively. The study suggested the combined technique of GIS, RF, and NS can serve the risk source identification of contaminated sites and risk forecast of toxic element diffusion in emergency situations.

Distribution, sources, and pollution levels of toxic metal(loid)s in an urban river (Ichamati), Bangladesh using SOM and PMF modeling with GIS tool

Indexical assessment coupled with a self-organizing map (SOM) and positive matrix factorization (PMF) modeling of toxic metal(loid)s in sediment and water of the aquatic environment provides valuable information from the environmental management perspective. However, in northwest Bangladesh, indexical and modeling assessments of toxic metal(loid)s in surface water and sediment are still rare. Toxic metal(loid)s were measured in sediment and surface water from an urban polluted river (Ichamati) in northwest Bangladesh using an atomic absorption spectrophotometer to assess distribution, pollution levels, sources, and potential environmental risks to the aquatic environment. The mean concentrations (mg/kg) of metal(loid)s in water are as follows: Fe (871) > Mn (382) > Cr (72.4) > Zn (34.2) > Co (20.8) > Pb (17.6) > Ni (16.7) > Ag (14.9) > As (9.0) > Cu (5.63) > Cd (2.65), while in sediment, the concentration follows the order, Fe (18,725) > Mn (551) > Zn (213) > Cu (47.6) > Cr (30.2) > Ni (24.2) > Pb (23.8) > Co (9.61) > As (8.23) > Cd (0.80) > Ag (0.60). All metal concentrations were within standard guideline values except for Cr and Pb for water and Cd, Zn, Cu, Pb, and As for sediment. The outcomes of eco-environmental indices, including contamination and enrichment factors and geo-accumulation index, differed spatially, indicating that most of the sediment sites were moderately to highly polluted by Cd, Zn, and As. Cd and Zn content can trigger ecological risks. The positive matrix factorization (PMF) model recognized three probable sources of sediment, i.e., natural source (49.39%), industrial pollution (19.72%), and agricultural source (30.92%), and three possible sources of water, i.e., geogenic source (45.41%), industrial pollution (22.88%), and industrial point source (31.72%), respectively. SOM analysis identified four spatial patterns, e.g., Fe-Mn-Ag, Cd-Cu, Cr-Pb-As-Ni, and Zn-Co in water and three patterns, e.g., Mn-Co-Ni-Cr, Cd-Cu-Pb-Zn, and As-Fe-Ag in sediment. The spatial distribution of entropy water quality index values shows that the southwestern area possesses "poor" quality water. Overall, the levels of metal(loid) pollution in the investigated river surpassed a critical threshold, which might have serious consequences for the river's aquatic biota and human health in the long run.

Spatial distribution characteristics and evaluation of soil pollution in coal mine areas in Loess Plateau of northern Shaanxi

The ecological environment in Loess Plateau of Northern Shaanxi is fragile, so the soil pollution caused by the exploitation of coal resources cannot be ignored. With Shigetai Coal Mine in Loess Plateau of Northern Shaanxi as the object of study for field survey and sampling, the content of heavy metals in soil is analyzed, the environmental pollution in the research area is evaluated by the single factor pollution index method, comprehensive pollution index method and potential ecological risk index method, and the spatial distribution characteristics of heavy metals are discussed by the geostatistics method. According to the study results, the average contents of heavy metals Hg, Cd, Pb and Cr are 2.03, 1.36, 1.11 and 1.23 times of the soil background values in Shaanxi Province respectively and the average contents of other heavy metals are lower than the soil background values in Shaanxi Province; Hg and Cd show moderate variation while As, Pb, Cr, Zn, Ni and Cu show strong variation; the skewness coefficients and kurtosis coefficient of Cd, As and Cu in the soil within the research area are relatively high, and these elements are accumulated in large amounts. Single factor pollution index (Pi) and potential ecological risk index (E) indicate that heavy metal Hg is the main pollution factor and mainly distributed in the east and north of the research area. The comprehensive index of potential ecological risk (RI) of the research area is 1336.49, showing an extremely high ecological risk, and the distribution characteristics of potential ecological risk are consistent with that of potential ecological risk index (E) of Hg. The results of ecological risk warning show that Hg is in a slight warning status, while Cd, Pb and Cr are in a warning status. The areas with high ecological risk warning values are mainly distributed in the east and north, and the whole research area shows relatively obvious zonal distribution law. The soil is disturbed greatly during the coal mining, so the ecological governance of the mine area shall adapt to the local natural conditions and regional environmental characteristics and follow the principle of “adjusting governance measures based on specific local conditions and classifications”. An environmentally sustainable governance manner shall be adopted to realize the protection of the ecological environment and high-quality development of coal resources.

Receptor model-oriented sources and risks evaluation of metals in sediments of an industrial affected riverine system in Bangladesh

Toxic metals in river sediments may represent significant ecological concerns, although there has been limited research on the source-oriented ecological hazards of metals in sediments. Surface sediments from an industrial affected Rupsa River were utilized in this study to conduct a complete investigation of toxic metals with source-specific ecological risk assessment. The findings indicated that the average concentration of Ni, Cr, Cd, Zn, As, Cu, Mn and Pb were 50.60 ± 10.97, 53.41 ± 7.76, 3.25 ± 1.73, 147.76 ± 36.78, 6.41 ± 1.85, 59.78 ± 17.77, 832.43 ± 71.56 and 25.64 ± 7.98 mg/kg, respectively and Cd, Ni, Cu, Pb and Zn concentration were higher than average shale value. Based on sediment quality guidelines, the mean effective range median (ERM) quotient (1.29) and Mean probable effect level (PEL) quotient (2.18) showed medium-high contamination in sediment. Ecological indexes like toxic risk index (20.73), Nemerow integrated risk index (427.59) and potential ecological risk index (610.66) posed very high sediment pollution. The absolute principle component score-multiple linear regression (APCS-MLR) and positive matrix factorization (PMF) model indicated that Zn (64.21%), Cd (51.58%), Cu (67.32%) and Ni (58.49%) in APCS-MLR model whereas Zn (49.5%), Cd (52.7%), Cu (57.4%) and Ni (44.6%) in PMF model were derived from traffic emission, agricultural activities, industrial source and mixed sources. PMF model-based Nemerow integrated risk index (NIRI) reported that industrial emission posed considerable and high risks for 87.27% and 12.72% of sediment samples. This work will provide a model-based guidelines for identifying and assessing metal sources which would be suitable for mitigating future pollution hazards in Riverine sediments in Bangladesh.

Environmental geochemistry of higher radioactivity in a transboundary Himalayan river sediment (Brahmaputra, Bangladesh): potential radiation exposure and health risks

This study of a downstream segment (Brahmaputra, Bangladesh) of one of the longest transboundary (China-India-Bangladesh) Himalayan rivers reveals elevated radioactivity compared to other freshwater basins across the world. Naturally occurring radioactive nuclides (²²⁶Ra, ²³²Th, and ⁴⁰K) and metal contents (transition metals, Fe, Ti, Sc, and V; rare earth elements, La, Ce, Eu, Sm, Dy, Yb, and Lu; high field strength elements, Ta and Hf; and actinides, Th and U) in thirty sediment samples were measured by HPGe γ-spectrophotometry and research reactor-based neutron activation analysis, respectively. We systematically investigated the mechanism of the deposition of higher radioactivity concentrations and rare earth elements (REEs) associated with heavy minerals (HMs) and photomicrograph-based mineralogical analysis. The results show that total REEs (∑REE) and Ta, Hf, U, and Th are generally 1.5- to 3.0-fold elevated compared to crustal values associated with -δEu and -δCe anomalies, suggesting a felsic source provenance. The enrichment of light REEs (×1.5 upper continental crust (UCC)) and Th (×1.9 UCC), besides Th/U (=7.74 ± 2.35) and ²³²Th/⁴⁰K ratios, along with the micrographic and statistical approaches, revealed the elevated presence of HMs. Fluvial suspended sedimentary transportation (from upstream) followed by mineralogical recycling and sorting enriched the HM depositions in this basin. Bivariate plots, including La/Th-Hf, La/Th-Th/Yb, and La/V-Th/Yb, revealed significant contributions of felsic source rock compared to mafic sources. The assessment of radiological hazards demonstrates ionizing-radiation-associated health risks to the local residents and people inhabiting houses made from Brahmaputra River sediments (as construction material).

Potentially toxic elemental contamination in Wainivesi River, Fiji impacted by gold-mining activities using chemometric tools and SOM analysis

Potentially toxic element (PTE) contamination in Wainivesi River, Fiji triggered by gold-mining activities is a major public health concern deserving attention. Cd and Ni contents can cause both ecological and human health risks. According to PCA, both mixed sources (geogenic and anthropogenic such as mine wastes discharge and farming activities) of PTEs for water and sediment were identified in the study area. The SOM analysis identified three spatial patterns, e.g., Cr-Co-Zn-Mn, Fe-Cd, and Ni-Pb-Cu in water and Zn-Cd-Cu-Mn, Cr-Ni and Fe, Co-Pb in sediment. Spatial distribution of entropy water quality index (EWQI) values depicted that northern and northwestern areas possess "poor" to "extremely poor" quality water. The entropy weights indicated Zn, Cd, and Cu as the major pollutants in deteriorating the water quality. This finding provides a baseline database with eco-environmental and health risk measures for the Wainivesi river contamination.

Distribution, Concentration, and Ecological Risk Assessment of Trace Metals in Surface Sediment of a Tropical Bangladeshi Urban River

Trace metal contamination in sediments is a global concern. This study aimed to assess the contamination level of trace metals, their sources, and ecological risk in surface sediments of Karnaphuli River—a tropical urban river in Bangladesh. Forty-five sediment samples were analyzed by atomic absorption spectrophotometry (AAS) for Cu, Fe, Zn, Pb, Cr, Cd, and Ni metals along with physicochemical parameters like pH and organic matter (OM). The pollution status and potential ecological risk were assessed by using the geo-accumulation index (Igeo), contamination factor (CF), and potential ecological risk index (PERI). Source identification of trace metals was performed by correlation analysis, cluster analysis, and principal component analysis (PCA). The results show that the range of Cu, Fe, Zn, Pb, Cr, Cd, and Ni concentrations were 0.62–1.61 mg/kg, 23.95–85.70%, 0.52–1.89 mg/kg, 7.99–12.90 mg/kg, 33.91–65.47 mg/kg, 0.77–1.17 mg/kg, and 2.73–5.36 mg/kg, respectively. The concentrations of Fe, Cd, and Cr were above the permissible limits while the contamination factor (CF) and geo-accumulation index (Igeo) values revealed that Fe and Cd were the most dominant pollutants. Cluster analysis and PERI exhibited significant anthropogenic intrusions of trace metals. A significant positive correlation between Fe-Cr, Cr-Ni, Fe-Ni, and Pb-Cd shows their common anthropogenic source and influences. PERI also revealed that Cr, Fe, and Cd have a significant contribution with a moderate to considerable potential threat.

Receptor model-based source apportionment and ecological risk of metals in sediments of an urban river in Bangladesh

Metal accumulation (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn) in Korotoa River sediment was studied in order to determine the metal content, distribution, sources, and their possible ecological impacts on the riverine ecosystem. Our study found significant spatial patterns of toxic metal concentration and principal coordinate analysis (PCoA) accounted for 45.2% of spatial variation from upstream to downstream. Metal contents were compared to sediment quality standards and found all studied metal concentrations exceeded the Threshold Effect Level (TEL) whereas Cr and Ni surpassed probable effect levels. All metal concentrations were higher than Average Shale Value (ASV) except Mn and Hg. The positive matrix factorization (PMF) and absolute principal component score-multiple linear regression models (APCS-MLR) were applied to identify promising sources of metals in sediment samples. Both models identified three potential sources i.e. natural source, traffic emission, and industrial pollution, which accounted for 50.32%, 20.16%, and 29.51% in PMF model whereas 43.56%, 29.42%, and 27.02% in APCS-MLR model, respectively. Based on ecological risk assessment, pollution load index (7.74), potential ecological risk (1078.45), Nemerow pollution index (5.50), and multiple probable effect concentrations quality (7.73) showed very high contamination of toxic metal in sediment samples.

Toxic metal pollution and ecological risk assessment in water and sediment at ship breaking sites in the Bay of Bengal Coast, Bangladesh

Quantification of four toxic metals (As, Cr, Cd, and Pb) in water and sediments at the Sitakunda ship breaking area in Bangladesh was studied. Along with this, sediment quality and ecological risk were evaluated for the metal intrusion to the study area. A total sample number of 120 (water; n = 60 and sediment; n = 60) were analyzed for both winter and summer seasons using atomic absorption spectrophotometer (AAS). The trace metal concentration in both water and sediment showed decreasing trend as follows; Cr (mean-W: 0.118 mg/L; mean-S:121.87 mg/kg) > Pb (mean-W: 0.064 mg/L; mean-S: 65.31 mg/kg) > As (mean-W: 0.03 mg/L; mean-S: 32.53 mg/kg) > Cd (mean-W: 0.004 mg/L; mean-S: 4.81 mg/kg). However, in both segments, the concentrations of the toxic metals exceeded the recommended acceptable limits. As and Cd showed significant variation (water and sediment) between the seasons, while Pb and Cr had no seasonal impact. Metal pollution index (MPI) and contamination factor (CF) was evaluated and revealed that the study area exhibited the critical score of water quality (MPI > 100). The cumulative effect of the metal concentrations was high (CI > 3). The assessed mean geoaccumulaiton index (I_geo) revealed that the study area was moderate to strongly polluted except for Cr. According to the contamination factor (CF), the sediment samples were moderate to highly contaminated by Cd, Pb, and As. Moreover, the explored range of pollution load index (PLI) in all sampling sites in the ship breaking region was from 1.75 to 3.10, suggesting that the sediment in the study area was highly polluted by heavy metals (PLI > 1). The risk index and the potential ecological risk index (PERI) suggested that the study area was at high risk due to metals pollution. Therefore, it is obligatory to maintain some crucial efforts for the betterment of the surrounding environment near the investigated sites.

A comprehensive exploration on distribution, risk assessment, and source quantification of heavy metals in the multi-media environment from Shaying River Basin, China

Comprehensively understand the distribution of pollutants in the multi-media environment at basin scale is of major importance to the ecological risk assessment and pollution control. In this study, multi-media contamination characteristics of eight heavy metals in the water, soil, and sediment from the Shaying River Basin of China have been analyzed to probe their ecological risks and potential sources. Results revealed that heavy metal concentrations in pore water were higher than those in surface water. While the mean concentrations of most heavy metals increased follow the order of bankside soil (BS)<water-level-fluctuating zone soil (WLFZS)<sediment. The WLFZ was an important transition zone between the BS and sediment for pollutant exchange. The mean heavy metal concentrations in surface water were all below their corresponding water quality standards except Hg. Whereas the mean concentrations of Cr, Ni, Zn, Cd, and Hg in BS, WLFZS, and sediment exceeded their corresponding background values. The assessment results of pollution and risks indicated that Hg and Cd posed the highest potential risks in each medium. Furthermore, according to the factor analysis and PMF model, six potential sources were identified, in which agricultural, fuel combustion, and industrial sources were the dominant anthropogenic sources, accounting for 23.84%, 17.43%, and 14.25% of the total contribution.

Hydrological distribution of physicochemical parameters and heavy metals in surface water and their ecotoxicological implications in the Bay of Bengal coast of Bangladesh

Accumulation of heavy metals in the coastal ecosystem has become a prodigious problem in any developing countries like Bangladesh. The impact of human activities on some physicochemical parameters and heavy metals was studied in surface water of the Bengal coast, Bangladesh. For ease of description, the fourteen study stations were categorized into four regions of the coastal sites of Bangladesh to determine physicochemical parameters and nine heavy metals like chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni), copper (Cu), arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), and zinc (Zn) in water samples. The mean concentrations for water physico-chemistry are temperature (27.7±1.2 °C), pH (7.4±0.27), electrical conductivity (EC) (41.8±6.6 mS/cm), dissolved oxygen (DO) (6.7±0.69 mg/L), turbidity (58.5±12.0 NTU), fluoride (1.4±1.2 mg/L), chloride (126±66.3 mg/L), sulfate (120±90.5 mg/L), nitrate (4.7±2.5 mg/L), and phosphate (4.7±2.5 mg/L). While the mean concentrations of Cr, Ni, Cu, As, Cd, Pb, Fe, Mn, and Zn were 150±58.3, 40.2±10.1, 186±114, 77.3±31.3, 32.7±20.7, 66.7±32.5, 871±268, 178±41.4, and 222±100 μg/L, respectively. As a whole, average concentration of studied metals in surface water followed the decreasing order of Fe > Zn > Cu > Mn > Cr > Pb > As > Ni > Cd. Heavy metals in water samples were much higher than the water quality guidelines for freshwater quality criteria for protection of aquatic life and drinking, indicated that the water of the study areas may create health hazard. The outcomes of the contamination factor (CF), pollution load index (PLI), Nemerow's pollution index (NPI), degree of contamination (C_d), and modified degree of contamination (mC_d) varied spatially and most of the water samples were moderately to heavily polluted.

Preliminary assessment of heavy metals in surface water and sediment in Nakuvadra-Rakiraki River, Fiji using indexical and chemometric approaches

River water and sediment embody environmental characteristics that give valuable environmental management information. However, indexical and chemometric appraisal of heavy metals (HMs) in river water and sediment is very scarce in Island countries including Fiji. In this research, forty-five sediment and fifteen water samples from the Nakuvadra-Rakiraki River, Fiji were analyzed for appraising spatial distribution, pollution, and source identification of selected heavy metals (HMs) using the coupling tools of self-organizing map (SOM), compositional data analysis (CDA), and sediment and water quality indices. The mean concentration of HMs increased in the order of Cd < Co < Pb < Cu < Zn < Ni < Cr < Mn < Fe for sediment and Cd < Pb < Cu < Ni < Zn < Co < Cr < Fe < Mn for water, respectively. The outcomes of the enrichment factor, geo-accumulation index and contamination factor index varied spatially and most of the sediment samples were polluted by Pb, Mn, and Cu. The potential ecological risk recognized Cd, and Pb as ecological and public health risks to the surrounding communities. Based on SOM and CDA, three potential sources (e.g., point, nonpoint and lithological sources) of HMs for sediment and two sources (e.g., geogenic and human-induced sources) of HMs for water were identified. The spatial patterns of EWQI values revealed that the northern and northeast zones of the studied area possess a high degree of water pollution. The entropy weight indicated Ni and Cd as the main pollutants degrading the water quality. This study gives a baseline dataset for combined eco-environmental measures for the river's water and sediment pollution as well as contributes to an inclusive appraisal of HMs contamination in global rivers.

Assessment of non-carcinogenic health risk of heavy metal pollution: evidences from coal mining region of eastern India

Various developmental projects and economic actions such as mining, industries, urban expansion, and agricultural activities contribute toxic heavy metals into the soils and it adversely affects to human health and broadly the environment. For the scientific study (coal mining region of Eastern India) around 120 soil samples were collected from top (0 - 20 cm) and subsurface soil (20 - 50 cm) of coal mining, semi mining and non mining type of land use sites to assess ten heavy metals applying standard methods and indices for the assessment of pollution load and human health risk. Statistical analysis clearly indicated that Fe, Mn, Zr are the most dominantly distributed in the study region. Coefficient of variance (CV)showed that there was very less variation in the metal values among samples of any particular landuse site. Correlation coefficient (0.05% level of significance) depicts that metals were very strongly correlated with each other in every site of Neturia block. Igeo (Geo- accumulation index) values of Fe and As indicated moderate to low pollution in the topsoil of study area. It is because of their regional background value. Enrichment Factor (EF) also showed thatcontamination of Fe ismainly supplied by natural factors (EF < 2)i.e., weathering of parent rock in all over the study area. All other heavy metals indicated their anthropogenic sources (EF > 2)on top and subsurface soil both of three landuse site. Degree of contamination (Cdeg), modified degree of contamination (mCdeg), contamination factor (CF) and pollution load index (PLI) clearly suggest that topsoil of coal mining sites is most polluted than two other sites. Subsurface soil of mining sites also indicated comparatively higher pollution load than subsoil of semi mining or non mining sites. PLI values have been classified into four groups i.e., high pollution (> 6), medium pollution (6 -3), low pollution (3 - 1) and no pollution (< 1) zone. There was no PLI value < 1 in topsoil of the study area. But subsurface soil of non mining site indicated no pollution to the soil. Spatial mapping using Inverse Distance Weightage (IDW) on Arc GIS 10.4 software showed clear variation of metal concentration and pollution load to the top and subsoil of the study area. Human health risk of non - carcinogenic typeisdue to heavy metals intake of topsoil through three exposure pathwaywhich indicates the health risk of HI _dermal> HI _ingestion> HI _inhalation for both the adult and children. Mean values of total HI showed that children are more prone to health risk in comparison with adult. There was no soil sample that exceeds its HI values > 1 for adults and thus no obvious health risk was found from soil heavy metals for adults.On the other hand, topsoil of mining sites indicated HI values >1;therefore, children are prone to health risk in this site. The present investigation suggests that coal mining region is highly polluted by their heavy metal burden on soil. Industrial and semi urban areas of semi mining region are also affected by heavy metal dust to its soil. Agricultural activities in non-mining region indicated lower pollution than other landuse sites. Remedial measures are highly needed to control heavy metal pollution of different landuse sites at colliery region to sustain environmental quality and human health as well. Modern scientific technologies and public awareness should be very useful on this way.

Application of Multivariate Statistical Techniques and Water Quality Index for the Assessment of Water Quality and Apportionment of Pollution Sources in the Yeongsan River, South Korea

This study assessed spatial and temporal variations of water quality to identify and quantify possible pollution sources affecting the Yeongsan River using multivariate statistical techniques (MSTs) and water quality index (WQI) values. A 15 year dataset of 11 water quality variables was used, covering 16 monitoring sites. The nutrient regime, organic matter, suspended solids, ionic contents, algal growth, and total coliform bacteria (TCB) were affected by the summer monsoon and the construction of weirs. Regression analysis showed that the algal growth was more highly regulated by total phosphorus (TP; R² = 0.37) than total nitrogen (TN, R² = 0.25) and TN/TP (R² = 0.01) ratios in the river after weir construction and indicated that the river is a P-limited system. After constructing the weirs, the mean TN/TP ratio in the river was about 40, meaning it is a P-limited system. Cluster analysis was used to classify the sampling sites into highly, moderately, and less polluted sites based on water quality features. Stepwise discriminant analysis showed that pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), TN, biological oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), chlorophyll-a (CHL-a), and TCB are the spatially discriminating parameters, while pH, water temperature, DO, electrical conductivity, total suspended solids, and COD are the most significant for discriminating among the three seasons. The Pearson network analysis showed that nutrients flow with organic matter in the river, while CHL-a showed the highest correlation with COD (r = 0.85), followed by TP (r = 0.49) and TN (r = 0.49). Average WQI values ranged from 55 to 141, indicating poor to unsuitable water quality in the river. The Mann-Kendall test showed increasing trends in COD and CHL-a but decreasing trends for TP, TN, and BOD due to impoundment effects. The principal component analysis combined with factor analysis and positive matrix factorization (PMF) showed that two sewage treatment plants, agricultural activities, and livestock farming adversely impacted river water quality. The PMF model returned greater R² values for BOD (0.92), COD (0.87), TP (0.93), TN (0.91), CHL-a (0.93), and TCB (0.83), indicating reliable apportionment results. Our results suggest that MSTs and WQI can be effectively used for the simple interpretation of large-scale datasets to determine pollution sources and their spatiotemporal variations. The outcomes of our study may aid policymakers in managing the Yeongsan River.

Distribution and risk appraisal of dissolved trace elements in Begnas Lake and Rupa Lake, Gandaki Province, Nepal

Contamination of the trace elements (TEs) in the freshwater ecosystems is becoming a worldwide problem. This study was carried out to investigate the TEs contamination, and their associated health risk in Begnas Lake and Rupa Lake, Gandaki Province, Nepal. A total of 30 water samples were collected from both lakes during the pre-monsoon season in 2016. The samples were analyzed for the TEs including copper (Cu), lead (Pb), zinc (Zn), nickel (Ni), cobalt (Co), chromium (Cr), cadmium (Cd), manganese (Mn), cesium (Cs), and arsenic (As) using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The results exhibited that the mean concentrations of all the TEs were higher in Rupa Lake as compared to Begnas Lake except Pb. Principal component analysis and cluster analysis revealed that both the geogenic and anthropic sources were the major contributors of TEs in the lake water. Anthropic activities were considered to contribute the TEs like Zn and Mn in lake water mainly via agricultural runoff, while evaluating the risk of TEs on human health all the elements showed HQ < 1 and CR < 10−4 indicating currently very low health risk concerns. In good agreement with above, the water quality index (WQI) of the Begnas Lake and Rupa Lake was 2.67 and 5.66, respectively, specifying the lake water was safe for drinking and public health concern. This appraisal would help the policymakers and concerned stakeholders for the sustainable management of Ramsar listed freshwater lakes in the Himalayas.

Urban river pollution in Bangladesh during last 40 years: potential public health and ecological risk, present policy, and future prospects toward smart water management

River water is very much important for domestic, agriculture and industrial use in Bangladesh which is in critical condition from long time based on research data. During last 40 years, extreme pollution events occurred in peripheral rivers surrounding Dhaka city and Karnaphuli River in Chittagong city. Present data showed that other urban rivers are also in critical condition especially Korotoa, Teesta, Rupsha, Pashur and Padma. The pollutants flowing with water made a severe pollution in downstream areas of rivers. Metals concentrations in river water was found to be higher in dry season. Dissolve oxygen (DO) was nearly zero in Buriganga River and several points in Turag, Balu, Sitalakhya and Karnaphuli River. NO₃^-, NO₂^- and PO₄^3- pollution occurred in different rivers. Zn, Cu, Fe, Pb, Cd, Ni, Mn, As and Cr concentration was above drinking water standard in most of the river and some metals was even above irrigation standard in water from several rivers. Sediment data showed very much higher metal concentrations in most of the rivers especially peripheral rivers in Dhaka and Karnaphuli, Korotoa, Teesta, Rupsha and Meghna River. Metal concentrations in sediment was above US EPA threshold value in most of the rivers. Metal concentrations in fish and agricultural crops showed that bioaccumulations of metals had occurred. The concentration of metals showed the trend like: water<fish<sediment. Agricultural crops were found to contain toxic metals through polluted water irrigation. The calculated data of daily intake for the non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic showed that consumption of the contaminated foodstuff can cause serious health injuries.
