Abstract
Solanum nigrum is a common weed in arable land, while being used in traditional medicine around the world due to its remarkable levels of valuable secondary metabolites. Agronomic and biological techniques can alter the production of a specific metabolite by influencing plant growth and metabolism. The effects of colonization with three arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), including Funneliformis mosseae, Rhizoglomus intraradices, and Rhizoglomus fasciculatum, on the chemical composition of S. nigrum fruits were evaluated by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis. More than 100 different chemical constituents were evaluated by GC-MS. Our study revealed that the levels of phenols (quinic acid), benzenes (hydroquinone), sulfur-containing compounds, lactone and carboxylic acids were improved by R. intraradices. In contrast, hydroxymethylfurfural increased by 68 % in R. fasciculatum inoculated with uninoculated S. nigrum plants, and this species was also the most efficient in inducing sugar compounds (D-galactose, lactose, and melezitose). Our results suggest that AMF colonization is an effective biological strategy that can alter the chemical composition and improve the medicinal properties of S. nigrum.

Abstract
In this study, the phenolic extracts of Eşme quince parts (pulp, peel, seed, juice, and leaf) were obtained under optimized extraction conditions. Then, the total phenolic content (TPC), the quantities of main phenolic compounds, antioxidant, and antimicrobial activity and the change in bioactivity properties (TPC, antioxidant capacity, and antimicrobial activity on the same sixteen microorganisms) after in vitro digestion of each quince part were evaluated. The order of TPC and antioxidant activity was determined as leaf > peel > juice > pulp > seed. After in vitro gastrointestinal digestion, a decrease was observed for the TPC (average 5-fold reduction) and antioxidant activity (more than 2.5-fold reduction) in all quince parts except quince seed than their extract forms. The quince leaf extract exhibited the highest antibacterial activity. Overall, this study exhibited that the quince leaf was considered a promising, cheap, and natural source for nutritional or pharmaceutical applications with biological activity properties.

Abstract
In recent years, the evaluation of many plant-derived compounds as potential new drugs or functional foods has become an active research topic. The morphological characteristics of quinces of the genera Cydonia sp., Chaenomeles sp., and Pseuocydonia sp. are largely similar, which is why these fruits are often confused. Although they have been appreciated in Asia for centuries as a valuable component of local ethnomedicine, they are less known in Western countries, and scientific knowledge about their health benefits remains fragmentary. This literature review summarizes studies on the content of chemical compounds responsible for the health-promoting and functional properties of the quince fruit. It focuses on the content of carotenoids, vitamins, minerals, and carboxylic acids, although the main emphasis is on the content and diversity of bioactive polyphenols, which are extremely abundant in these fruits. The quince fruits are rich in antioxidants and compounds with proven anti-inflammatory, anticancer, antiallergic, and immunomodulatory effects. Their phytochemicals effectively regulate glycemia and improve the blood lipid profile, suggesting potential antidiabetic and cardioprotective benefits. Analysis of chemical characteristics showed that the Chaenomeles fruits. are underestimated as functional food ingredients. Studies on the molecular effects of their bioactive compounds and species-specific genomic analyses are sorely lacking in the scientific literature.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to evaluate the moisturizing efficacy of quince fruit, used in folk medicine. For this purpose, the phytoconstituents of Cydonia oblonga fruit extract, like phenolics and flavonoids, were determined. A stable cosmetic emulgel containing 4% Cydonia oblonga fresh fruit extract was formulated and subjected to in vivo evaluation compared with a control. MATERIALS AND METHODS Cydonia oblonga fresh fruit extract was evaluated for tyrosinase activity and phenolic and flavonoid content. A stable emulgel containing 4% Cydonia oblonga fresh fruit extract was formulated and tested in a skin irritation test. After this, in vivo tests of erythema, moisture, sebum, and skin elasticity were conducted. The in vivo evaluation was a randomized and single-blind study. Thirteen healthy female volunteers were selected for a three-month study period. RESULTS Cydonia oblonga fruit extract showed good phenolic and flavonoid content, which was associated with its good antioxidant and tyrosinase-inhibiting activity. Cydonia oblonga containing the emulgel showed a reduction in sebum and erythema, while the elasticity and moisture content showed increments in their levels after the three-month application of the formulation. The fruit contains chlorogenic acid and many sugars, which might account for its anti-inflammatory and sebum reduction effects; it is also capable of enhancing the skin's hydration level and decreasing skin sagging by enhancing its elasticity. CONCLUSION The emulgel loaded with Cydonia oblonga fresh fruit extract is verified regarding its folklore status as a moisturizing agent that enhances the facial skin cells' resilience potential.

Abstract
Antimicrobial resistance is increasing globally and is now one of the major public health problems. Therefore, there is a need to search for new antimicrobial agents. The food industry generates large amounts of by-products that are rich in bioactive compounds, such as phenolic compounds, which are known to have several health benefits, including antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. Thus, we aimed to characterize the phenolic compounds present in pomegranate, quince, and persimmon by-products, as well as their antioxidant and antimicrobial activities. Phenolic compounds were extracted from pomegranate, quince, and persimmon leaves, seeds, and peels using a mixture of ethanol/water (80/20). The polyphenol profile of the extracts was determined by high-performance liquid chromatography. The antioxidant activity of the extracts was determined by the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), and cupric reducing antioxidant capacity (CUPRAC) methods. Antimicrobial susceptibility was evaluated using the Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion method. In general, leaves showed higher concentrations of phenolics than the peel and seeds of fruits. In total, 23 phenolic compounds were identified and quantified, with sanguiin and apigenin-3-O-galactoside being present in the highest concentrations. Leaf extracts of pomegranate showed higher antioxidant activities than the other components in all methods used. In general, all extracts had a greater antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive bacteria. Persimmon leaf and seed extracts inhibited a greater number of bacteria, both Gram-positive and -negative. The lowest minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) detected among Gram-positive and -negative bacteria was 10 mg/mL for pomegranate peel and leaf extracts against Staphylococcus aureus and S. pseudintermedius and for pomegranate leaf extract against Escherichia coli. Our results reinforce the need to value food industry by-products that could be used as food preservatives and antibiotic adjuvants against multiresistant bacteria.

Abstract
The pharmacological activity of a callus extract from the pulp of Cydonia oblonga Mill., also known as quince, was investigated in murine macrophage (RAW 264.7) and human keratinocyte (HaCaT) cell lines. In particular, the anti-inflammatory activity of C. oblonga Mill. pulp callus extract was assessed in lipopolysaccharides (LPS)-treated RAW 264.7 by the Griess test and in LPS-treated HaCaT human keratinocytes by examining the expression of genes involved in the inflammatory process, including nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), interleukin-6 (IL-6), interleukin-1β (IL-1β), nuclear factor-kappa-B inhibitor alfa (ikBα), and intercellular adhesion molecule (ICAM). The antioxidant activity was evaluated by quantizing the reactive oxygen species (ROS) production in the hydrogen peroxide and tert-butyl hydroperoxide-injured HaCaT cell line. The obtained results indicate that C. oblonga callus from fruit pulp extract has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities, suggesting its possible application in delaying and preventing acute or chronic diseases associated with aging or in the treatment of wound dressing.

Abstract
Quince fruit (Cydonia oblonga Miller) is an important source of bioactive compounds, especially of phenolic compounds, that's why it is considered a good source of antioxidants. However, it is known that the antioxidant characteristics and the beneficial effect of foods are affected by the variety, geographical origin, processing and gastrointestinal digestion. In this work, the effects of the geographical origin, processing, and simulated digestion of quince jam on its antioxidant characteristics were studied. Phenolic composition and antioxidant capacity were determined in quince fruit and jam from four different locations in San Juan, Argentina. The results showed that quince fruit samples from St. Lucia had the highest total phenolic content (5.13 mg GAE/g; p < 0.05) and in vitro antioxidant capacity measured by ferric-reducing antioxidant power assay (FRAP) and radical-scavenging capacity assay (DPPH· and ABTS·+ ). With regard to quince jam, a positive effect was observed on its antioxidant characteristics after processing. Twenty-one phenolics were detected in jam, being most of them derivatives of hydroxycinnamic acids (eg. 5-caffeoylquinic acid; 4-caffeoylquinic acid and quinic acid). Studies on stability and bioaccessibility of quince phenolics showed that less than 25% of the initial phenolics in jam were detected after digestion being quinic acid and hydroxycinnamic acids the most resistant. The in vitro antioxidant capacity showed, in general, a similar trend to the phenolics content throughout the digestion process. The results obtained showed that the antioxidant activity of quince and jam is related to the type and amount of phenolics in the samples, which depends on the geographical origin, processing, and gastrointestinal digestion. These variables are not always taken into account when studying the probable antioxidant activity of food, even though they should be considered for a complete nutritional evaluation of a food.

Abstract
Cydonia oblonga Miller (quince) is a monotypic genus in the Rosaceae family which used to treat or prevent many medical conditions such as diabetes, cancer, infections, and ulcer. This review will summarize the current state of knowledge available on botany, phytochemistry, and pharmacology of this plant with a focus on its effect on some cardiovascular risk factors such as diabetes, blood pressure, lipid profile, and body weight. Databases of Google Scholar, Web of Science, PubMed, Scopus, and SID were searched systematically for English published articles with no date limitation. There were no human studies found, and all of the studies were conducted on animals or in vitro models. Reviewing of all 12 included articles showed that different types of quince extract have positive effects on cardiovascular-related factors such as blood pressure, diabetes, glucose metabolism, lipid profile, ROS, body weight, liver dysfunction, and thrombosis. An antihypertensive effect of quince showed to be a magnitude that is comparable to captopril and the lipid-lowering effect of quince showed to be a magnitude that is comparable to simvastatin. However, two studies evaluated the effect of quince fruit extract on insulin levels; one of them reported no positive effect, and the other one reported a significant positive effect. It can be concluded that different parts of quince including leaf, seed, and fruit could be used for improving cardiovascular-related factors including blood pressure, glucose metabolism and diabetes, obesity, and lipid-adjusting purposes. Quince was also found to have strong anti-inflammatory and antioxidant capacity. This study paves the way for further studies on the cardiovascular effect of quince consumption as a beneficial nutraceutical in humans.

Abstract
Quince fruit (Cydonia oblonga) that belongs to the Rosaceae family and native to the Mediterranean region has been studied for decades for its unique importance in food and medicine. This fruit is packed with vitamins, minerals as well as fibers, pectin and tannins. Quince is known by its many therapeutic effects that include antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, anti-ulcerative, and anticancer actions. However, this fruit is underutilized at the level of food processing due to its sensory attributes and the limited appreciation of its benefits by both farmers and consumers. Other than jellies and jams, quince could be processed into various healthy sub-products. The aims of the current review are to present botanical and nutritive value of this fruit, review the available literature on its therapeutic effects in order to increase farmers and consumers awareness about the importance of quince fruit and showing the different ways of utilizing it.

Abstract
Quince (Cydonia oblonga Mill.) is a potential source of polyphenolic compounds related with beneficial biological processes. In this study polyphenols from quince fruit were extracted with aqueous acetone at different ratios. A polyphenol profile was identified and quantified by LC-ESI-QqQ. The antioxidant capacity (ORAC and DPPH) and anti-inflammatory effect (inhibition of COX-2 cyclooxygenase) were evaluated in vitro. The results indicated an effect of the aqueous acetone ratio on the extraction of polyphenolic compounds. The higher extraction yields of polyphenolic compounds were attained with 60-75% aqueous acetone. However, extracts obtained with 85% aqueous acetone promoted higher antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. Optimal scaling analysis indicated that hydroxycinnamic acids (quinic and chlorogenic), hydroxybenzoic acids (vanillic and syringic), flavonoids (quercetin and kaempferol), dihydrochalcones (neohesperidin) and flavones (acacetin) are related to the antioxidant activity of quince. While phenolic acids, flavonols (kaempferol-3-O-glucoside and rutin) and flavanols (epicatechin) generated the anti-inflammatory effect by inhibiting 52.3% of the COX-2 enzyme. Therefore, a selective extraction of phenolic mix can reduce oxidative stress or inflammatory processes. This suggests the use of quince as a natural source with significant nutraceutical potential.

Abstract
Methanolic extracts of the leaf and flower of Michelia L., an evergreen aromatic genus widely used in landscaping, industry and medicine of various countries, were analyzed. The UPLC-ESI-MS/MS analysis led to the identification of 28 polyphenols from six Michelia species that widely distributed and cultivated in southern China, among which quinic acid and chlorogenic acid were the main components. The flower extract of Michelia maudiae had the most abundant polyphenols content, as well as high contents of total phenolic (117.31 ± 7.26 mg GAE/g DW) and total flavonoid (251.60 ± 15.56 mg CE/g DW). Meanwhile, it also showed outstanding performance in three antioxidant indexes of DPPH, ABTS and FRAP. The leaf extracts of Michelia chapensis and Michelia floribunda exhibited excellent inhibition against four pathogenic bacteria. Moreover, certain inhibitory activities were displayed by Michelia macclurei extracts against α-amylase and α-glucosidase This study explored the biological activities of six Michelia species, and provided reference for variety selection with the aim of designing novel phyto-pharmaceuticals.

Abstract
Cydonia oblonga Mill., normally known as the quince fruit, has been widely used in agro-food industries mainly to produce jams and jellies. However, other parts of the plants are still underutilized and not completely assessed for their nutraceutical profile. Therefore, in this work, the polyphenolic profile of C. oblonga was investigated using an untargeted metabolomics approach based on high-resolution mass spectrometry. Several compounds were identified in the different parts of the plants, including flavonoids (i.e., anthocyanins, flavones, flavan-3-ols, and flavonols), phenolic acids (both hydroxycinnamics and hydroxybenzoics), low-molecular-weight phenolics (tyrosol equivalents), lignans, and stilbenes. Overall, C. oblonga leaves showed the highest in vitro antioxidant potential, as revealed by 2,2-difenil-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), 2,2'-Azino-bis(3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS), ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), and cupric ion reducing antioxidant capacity (CUPRAC) assays, being 189.5, 285.6, 158.9, and 348.8 mg Trolox Equivalent/g, respectively. The enzymes acetyl- and butyryl-cholinesterases were both inhibited by the different plant parts of C. oblonga, with stems showing the higher inhibitory potential. Interestingly, the fruit extracts were the only parts inhibiting the α-glucosidase, with a value of 1.36 mmol acarbose equivalents (ACAE)/g. On the other hand, strong tyrosinase inhibition was found for stems and leaves, being 72.11 and 68.32 mg Kojic acid Equivalent/g, respectively. Finally, a high number of significant (0.05 < p < 0.01) correlations were outlined between phenolics (mainly anthocyanins, flava-3-ols, and tyrosol equivalents) and the different biological assays. Taken together, our findings suggest a potential exploitation of C. oblonga leaves and stems for the food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries.

Abstract
Quince (Cydonia oblonga Mill.) is the sole member of the genus Cydonia in the Rosacea family and closely related to the major pome fruits, apple (Malus domestica Borkh.) and pear (Pyrus communis L.). In the present work, whole genome shotgun paired-end sequencing was employed in order to assemble the first draft genome of quince. A genome assembly that spans 488.4 Mb of sequence corresponding to 71.2% of the estimated genome size (686 Mb) was produced in the study. Gene predictions via ab initio and homology-based sequence annotation strategies resulted in the identification of 25,428 and 30,684 unique putative protein coding genes, respectively. 97.4 and 95.6% of putative homologs of Arabidopsis and rice transcription factors were identified in the ab initio predicted genic sequences. Different machine learning algorithms were tested for classifying pre-miRNA (precursor microRNA) coding sequences, identifying Support Vector Machine (SVM) as the best performing classifier. SVM classification predicted 600 putative pre-miRNA coding loci. Repetitive DNA content of the assembly was also characterized. The first draft assembly of the quince genome produced in this work would constitute a foundation for functional genomic research in quince toward dissecting the genetic basis of important traits and performing genomics-assisted breeding.

Abstract
The purpose of this work was to investigate the effect of hydroalcoholic extracts from the peel (APE) and pulp (APP) of a traditional apple variety of central Italy, the 'Mela Rosa dei Monti Sibillini', on the damage caused by renal ischemia/reperfusion injury (IRI) in rats. Thirty mg per kg b.w. of the extracts were administered intraperitoneally to male adult Wistar rats 3 days before the induction of IRI by pedicle clamping. A significant decrease in the levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNFα), interleukin 1 beta (IL-1β) and nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) was observed in the groups pre-treated with APE when compared with IRI rats. The chemical composition of APE was determined by HPLC-DAD-MSn highlighting a significant amount of proanthocyanidins (52.9 mg g-1), flavonols (42.27 mg g-1) and dihydrochalcones (11.75 mg g-1). These findings indicated that this ancient apple variety is a promising source of nutraceuticals and functional foods helpful to manage complications of renal disorders.

Abstract
The quince fruit can be an alternative for producing healthy tea because it is a rich source of bioactive compounds. This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of heating (for 20, 40 and 60 min) on the bioactive compounds of quince and quality attributes its tisanes. To this aim, phenolic content of the treated sample (for 40 min according to sensory analysis) was evaluated by HPLC and antioxidant activity was measured using DPPH method. The analysis of sensory evaluation data demonstrated that the heating process significantly improved the color and taste of the quince tisanes. Thermal treatment (180 °C) for 40 min had maximum acceptability. Although, results confirmed negative effects of the heating process on phenolic content, it showed an increase in antioxidant activity. The HPLC data displayed significant reduction in total amount of five identified phenolic compounds from 460.51 to 25.49 mg/25 g extract by heat treatment. In contrast the roasted sample exhibited lower IC50 (663.88 µg/ml) than the unprocessed sample (1098.66 µg/ml). Considering the elevated antioxidant activity achieved through the heating process, the quince tisane can be considered as a healthy beverage.
