A mesoporous melamine/chitosan/activated carbon biocomposite: Preparation, characterization and its application for Ni (II) uptake via ion imprinting

A novel imprinted biocomposite and its non-imprinted form were developed by melaminating and crosslinking of chitosan coated onto a bio-based activated carbon and characterized using FTIR, BET, FESEM-EDS and XRD. Nickel, 4-Toluenesulfonyl chloride, and glutaraldehyde were used as a template, converter of hydroxyl and amine groups to good leaving groups, and cross-linker, respectively. The factors affecting adsorptivity and imprinting factor were optimized by using the Taguchi method for the subsequent comparative adsorptivity, kinetics, isotherms, selectivity, and reusability studies of imprinted biocomposite with its non-imprinted one. The pseudo-first-order and Langmuir models were best fitted to the experimental kinetics and equilibrium isotherm data, respectively. The maximum Ni (II)) adsorptivity of 109.86 mg/g, the imprinting factor (I·F) of 5.45 and Ni (II) selectivity coefficients values of 3.13, 4.48, 3.72, 2.51 for Ni (II) toward Zn (II), Cd (II), Cu (II) and Pb (II), respectively, were obtained at optimum conditions. After five consecutive adsorption-desorption cycles, the biocomposites still presented a high adsorptivity (>83%), indicating their excellent reusability.

Thermal Plasma Synthesis of Crystalline Gallium Nitride Nanopowder from Gallium Nitrate Hydrate and Melamine

Gallium nitride (GaN) nanopowder used as a blue fluorescent material was synthesized by using a direct current (DC) non-transferred arc plasma. Gallium nitrate hydrate (Ga(NO₃)₃∙xH₂O) was used as a raw material and NH₃ gas was used as a nitridation source. Additionally, melamine (C₃H₆N₆) powder was injected into the plasma flame to prevent the oxidation of gallium to gallium oxide (Ga₂O₃). Argon thermal plasma was applied to synthesize GaN nanopowder. The synthesized GaN nanopowder by thermal plasma has low crystallinity and purity. It was improved to relatively high crystallinity and purity by annealing. The crystallinity is enhanced by the thermal treatment and the purity was increased by the elimination of residual C₃H₆N₆. The combined process of thermal plasma and annealing was appropriate for synthesizing crystalline GaN nanopowder. The annealing process after the plasma synthesis of GaN nanopowder eliminated residual contamination and enhanced the crystallinity of GaN nanopowder. As a result, crystalline GaN nanopowder which has an average particle size of 30 nm was synthesized by the combination of thermal plasma treatment and annealing.

Preparation of Self-Assembled Spherical g-C3N4/tz-Bi(0.92)Gd(0.08)VO4 Heterojunctions and Their Mineralization Properties

A novel kind of spherical g-C3N4/tz-Bi0.92Gd0.08VO4 heterojuctions are prepared via a simple microwave hydrothermal method. The sphere self-assembled mechanism and the heterojunction photocatalytic mechanism are mainly studied in this article. The results show that the added g-C3N4 sheets first anchor on ms-BiVO4 surfaces and then polymerize to form the coating layers, generating steric effect which is competing with Gd(3+) induction effect to affect the crystal transformation (from ms-BiVO4 to tz-BiVO4) and its growth during those processes. Afterward, independent coated structures are further polymerized and assembled into g-C3N4/tz-Bi0.92Gd0.08VO4 spheres. Because ECB (-0.95 V) of g-C3N4 is more negative than ECB (-0.05 V) of tz-BiVO4, the photoelectrons of g-C3N4 can be transferred into tz-BiVO4 surfaces through the heterojunction structure, so as to promote the separation rate of electron-hole pairs. In general, the adding of g-C3N4 can introduce hydroxyl groups to catch the photoholes and can inject electrons to react with dissolved oxygen to boost the production of active groups. Depending on such an orderly cooperation, g-C3N4/tz-Bi0.92Gd0.08VO4 heterojunction catalysts exhibit high and stable mineralization properties.
