Abstract
Micro-nanomotors (MNMs) are micro/nanoscale intelligent devices with vast potential in the fields of drug delivery, precision medicine, biosensing, and environmental remediation. Their primary advantage lies in their ability to convert various forms of external energy (such as magnetic, ultrasonic, and light energy) into their own propulsive force. Additionally, MNMs offer high controllability and modifiability, enabling them to navigate in the microscopic world. Importantly, recent research has harnessed the unique advantages of MNMs to synergize their capabilities in neuromodulation. This mini-review presents the significant progress and pioneering achievements in the use of MNMs for neuromodulation, with the aim of inspiring readers to explore the broader biomedical applications of these MNMs. Through continuous innovation and diligent exploration, MNMs show promise to have a profound impact on the field of biomedicine.

Abstract
Swarm behaviors are common in nature, where individual organisms collaborate via perception, communication, and adaptation. Emulating these dynamics, large groups of active agents can self-organize through localized interactions, giving rise to complex swarm behaviors, which exhibit potential for applications across various domains. This review presents a comprehensive summary and perspective of synthetic swarms, to bridge the gap between the microscale individual agents and potential applications of synthetic swarms. It is begun by examining active agents, the fundamental units of synthetic swarms, to understand the origins of their motility and functionality in the presence of external stimuli. Then inter-agent communications and agent-environment communications that contribute to the swarm generation are summarized. Furthermore, the swarm behaviors reported to date and the emergence of machine intelligence within these behaviors are reviewed. Eventually, the applications enabled by distinct synthetic swarms are summarized. By discussing the emergent machine intelligence in swarm behaviors, insights are offered into the design and deployment of autonomous synthetic swarms for real-world applications.

Abstract
In this study, Pt(0) microscrolls are synthesized on polished Ni via galvanic replacement reaction (GRR). Employing in situ optical microscopy, the dynamic motion of the catalytic microscrolls as micromotors in H2O2 solutions is revealed. This method offers a rapid fabrication of scrolls from diverse noble metals and alloys.

Abstract
Inspired by the reverse thrust generated by fuel injection, micromachines that are self-propelled by bubble ejection are developed, such as microrods, microtubes, and microspheres. However, controlling bubble ejection sites to build micromachines with programmable actuation and further enabling mechanical transmission remain challenging. Here, bubble-propelled mechanical microsystems are constructed by proposing a multimaterial femtosecond laser processing method, consisting of direct laser writing and selective laser metal reduction. The polymer frame of the microsystems is first printed, followed by the deposition of catalytic platinum into the desired local site of the microsystems by laser reduction. With this method, a variety of designable microrotors with selective bubble ejection sites are realized, which enable excellent mechanical transmission systems composed of single and multiple mechanical components, including a coupler, a crank slider, and a crank rocker system. We believe the presented bubble-propelled mechanical microsystems could be extended to applications in microrobotics, microfluidics, and microsensors.

Abstract
Microengines driven by catalytic decomposition of a fuel have been an interesting research area recently due to their diverse applications, such as environmental monitoring and drug delivery. Literature reports a number of studies on this topic where researchers have made various attempts to manufacture such microengines. Some such methods are deposition of catalytic metal layers on sacrificial photoresists, electrochemical deposition of metal layers on polymeric structures, or 3D printing of structures followed by multi-step loading of structures with catalysts. These methods, even though proven to be effective, are tedious, time-consuming, and expensive. To address these issues, herein we report a 3D printing technique to realize microengines in a simple, rapid, and inexpensive single-step process. The printing of various shapes of microengines is achieved using digital light processing printing of a catalyst resin, where Pd(II) acts as a catalyst resin. The proposed integrated molding process can achieve cost-effective preparation of high-efficiency microengines. We demonstrate the locomotion of these microengines in 30% (w/w) H2O2 through the decomposition of H2O2 to generate oxygen to facilitate the self-propelled locomotion. The study characterizes the microengine based on several factors, such as the role of H2O2, Pd, shape, and design of the microengine, to get a full picture of the self-locomotion of microengines. The study shows that the developed method is feasible to manufacture microengines in a simple, rapid, and inexpensive manner to be suitable for numerous applications such as environmental monitoring, remediation, drug delivery, diagnosis, etc., through the modification of the catalyst resin and fuel, as desired.

Abstract
In recent years, nanomotors have been developed and attracted extensive attention in biomedical applications. In this work, a magnetically-guided oxygen-propelled CoPt/gold nanosheet motor (NSM) was prepared and used as an active self-propelled platform that can load, transfer and control the release of drug carrier to cancer cells. As a drug carrier, the microcapsules were constructed by the layer-by-layer (LbL) coating of chitosan and carboxymethyl cellulose layers, followed by incorporation of gold and magnetite nanoparticles. Doxorubicin (DOX) as an anti-cancer drug was loaded onto the synthesized microcapsules with a loading efficiency of 77%. The prepared NSMs can deliver the DOX loaded magnetic multilayer microcapsule to the target cancer cell based on the catalytic decomposition of H2O2 solution (1% v/v) via guidance from an external magnetic force. The velocity of NSM was determined to be 25.1 μm s-1 in 1% H2O2. Under near-infrared irradiation, and due to the photothermal effect of the gold nanoparticles, the proposed system was found to rapidly release more drugs compared to that of an internal stimulus diffusion process. Moreover, the investigation of cytotoxicity of NSMs and multilayer microcapsules clearly revealed that they have negligible side effects over all the concentrations tested.

Abstract
Microrobots have emerged as a promising precision therapy approach that has been widely used in minimally invasive treatments, targeted drug delivery, and wound cleansing, and they also offer a potential new method for actively modulating gut microbiota. Here, a double-faced microrobot was designed to carry gut bacteria via covalently immobilizing the antibodies, and a corresponding integrated optical and magnetic dual-driving control system was also developed for precise control of the microrobot. The microrobot utilizes magnetic microsphere as its core, with one side coated in gold, which serves as the optical receptor surface and the interface for bacterial attachment. The specific gut bacterium, S. cerevisiae, was immobilized on the gold-coated side using the corresponding antibodies. The dual-driving control system enables the precise modulation of gut bacteria by synergistically manipulating the microrobots' movement via the optical field and magnetic field. The feasibility of independent and coordinated control using optical fields and magnetic fields was validated through experimental and numerical simulation approaches. This work introduces a novel method for the precise modulation of gut microbiota, providing a new avenue for disease treatments based on gut bacteria.

Abstract
Micro- and nanorobots are highly intelligent and efficient. They can perform various complex tasks as per the external stimuli. These robots can adapt to the required functional form, depending on the different stimuli, thus being able to meet the requirements of various application scenarios. So far, microrobots have been widely used in the fields of targeted therapy, drug delivery, tissue engineering, environmental remediation and so on. Although microbots are promising in some fields, few reviews have yet focused on them. It is therefore necessary to outline the current status of these microbots' development to provide some new insights into the further evolution of this field. This paper critically assesses the research progress of microbots with respect to their preparation methods, stimulus-response mechanisms and applications. It highlights the suitability of different preparation methods and stimulus types, while outlining the challenges experienced by microbots. Viable solutions are also proposed for the promotion of their practical use.

Abstract
Synthetic micro/nanomotors have attracted considerable attention due to their promising potential in the field of biomedicine. Despite their great potential, major micromotors require chemical fuels or complex devices to generate external physical fields for propulsion. Therefore, for future practical medical and environmental applications, Mg-based micromotors that exhibit water-powered movement and thus eliminate the need for toxic fuels, and that display optimal biocompatibility and biodegradability, are attracting attention. In this review, we summarized the recent microarchitectural design of Mg-based micromotors for biomedical applications. We also highlight the mechanism for realizing their water-powered motility. Furthermore, recent biomedical and environmental applications of Mg-based micromotors are introduced. We envision that advanced Mg-based micromotors will have a profound impact in biomedicine.

Abstract
Micro/nanomotors (MNMs) emerge as a vital candidate for biosensing due to its nano-size structure, high surface-to-area ratio, directional mobility, biocompatibility, and ease of functionalization, therefore being able to detect objects with high efficiency, precision, and selectivity. The driving mode, nanostructure, materials property, preparation technique, and biosensing applications have been thoroughly discussed in publications. To promote the MNMs-based biosensors from in vitro to in vivo, it is necessary to give a comprehensive discussion from the perspective of sensing performances enhancement. However, until now, there is few reviews dedicated to the systematic discussion on the multiple performance enhancement schemes and the current challenges of MNMs-based biosensors. Bearing it in mind and based on our research experience in this field, we summarized the enhancement methods for biosensing properties such as sensitivity, selectivity, detection time, biocompatibility, simplify system operation, and environmental availability. We hope that this review provides the readers with fundamental understanding on performance enhancement schemes for MNMs-based biosensors.

Abstract
Untethered micro/nanorobots that can wirelessly control their motion and deformation state have gained enormous interest in remote sensing applications due to their unique motion characteristics in various media and diverse functionalities. Researchers are developing micro/nanorobots as innovative tools to improve sensing performance and miniaturize sensing systems, enabling in situ detection of substances that traditional sensing methods struggle to achieve. Over the past decade of development, significant research progress has been made in designing sensing strategies based on micro/nanorobots, employing various coordinated control and sensing approaches. This review summarizes the latest developments on micro/nanorobots for remote sensing applications by utilizing the self-generated signals of the robots, robot behavior, microrobotic manipulation, and robot-environment interactions. Providing recent studies and relevant applications in remote sensing, we also discuss the challenges and future perspectives facing micro/nanorobots-based intelligent sensing platforms to achieve sensing in complex environments, translating lab research achievements into widespread real applications.

Abstract
The emergence of "nanomotors", "nanomachines", and "nanorobotics" has transformed dynamic nanoparticle research, driving a transition from passive to active and intelligent nanoscale systems. This review examines two critical fields: the investigation of airborne particles, significant contributors to air pollution, and the rapidly emerging domain of catalytic and field-controlled nano- and micromotors. We examine the basic concepts of nano- and micromachines in motion and envision their possible use in a gaseous medium to trap and neutralize hazardous particulates. While past studies described the application of nanotechnology and nanomotors in various scenarios, airborne nano/micromachine motion and their control have yet to be thoroughly explored. This review intends to promote multidisciplinary research on nanomachines' propulsion and task-oriented applications, highlighting their relevance in obtaining a cleaner atmospheric environment, a critical component to consider for human health.

Abstract
Chemical reactions can induce self-propulsion by the production and ejection of gas bubbles from micro-rocket like cylindrical units. We describe related micro-submarines that change their depth in response to catalytic gas production. The structures consist of silica-supported CuO and are produced by utilizing the self-assembly rules of chemical gardens. In H2O2 solution, the tube cavity produces O2(g) and the resulting buoyancy lifts the tube to the air-solution interface, where it releases oxygen and sinks back down to the bottom of the container. In 5 cm deep solutions, the resulting bobbing cycles have a period of 20-30 s and repeat for several hours. The ascent is characterized by a vertical orientation of the tube and a constant acceleration. During the descent, the tubes are oriented horizontally and sink at a nearly constant speed. These striking features are quantitatively captured by an analysis of the involved mechanical forces and chemical kinetics. The results show that ascending tubes increase their oxygen-production rate by the motion-induced injection of fresh solution into the tube cavity.

Abstract
Bovine mastitis produced by Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) causes major problems in milk production due to the staphylococcal enterotoxins produced by this bacterium. These enterotoxins are stable and cannot be eradicated easily by common hygienic procedures once they are formed in dairy products. Here, magnetic microrobots (MagRobots) are developed based on paramagnetic hybrid microstructures loaded with IgG from rabbit serum that can bind and isolate S. aureus from milk in a concentration of 3.42 104 CFU g-1 (allowable minimum level established by the United States Food and Drug Administration, FDA). Protein A, which is present on the cell wall of S. aureus, selectively binds IgG from rabbit serum and loads the bacteria onto the surface of the MagRobots. The selective isolation of S. aureus is confirmed using a mixed suspension of S. aureus and Escherichia coli (E. coli). Moreover, this fuel-free system based on magnetic robots does not affect the natural milk microbiota or add any toxic compound resulting from fuel catalysis. This system can be used to isolate and transport efficiently S. aureus and discriminate it from nontarget bacteria for subsequent identification. Finally, this system can be scaled up for industrial use in food production.

Abstract
The function of robots in extreme environments is regarded as one of the major challenges facing robotics. Here, we demonstrate that acidophilic microalgae biomotors can maintain their swimming behavior over long periods of time in the harsh acidic environment of the stomach, thus enabling them to be applied for gastrointestinal (GI) delivery applications. The biomotors can also be functionalized with a wide range of cargos, ranging from small molecules to nanoparticles, without compromising their ability to self-propel under extreme conditions. Successful GI delivery of model payloads after oral administration of the acidophilic algae motors is confirmed using a murine model. By tuning the surface properties of cargos, it is possible to modulate their precise GI localization. Overall, our findings indicate that multifunctional acidophilic algae-based biomotors offer distinct advantages compared to traditional biohybrid platforms and hold great potential for GI-related biomedical applications.

Abstract
Thermochromic window develops as a competitive solution for carbon emissions due to comprehensive advantages of its passivity and effective utilization of energy. How to further enhance the solar modulation ([Formula: see text]) of thermochromic windows while ensuring high luminous transmittance ([Formula: see text]) becomes the latest challenge to touch the limit of energy efficiency. Here, we show a smart window combining mechanochromism with thermochromism by self-rolling of vanadium dioxide (VO2) nanomembranes to enhance multi-level solar modulation. The mechanochromism is introduced by the temperature-controlled regulation of curvature of rolled-up smart window, which benefits from effective strain adjustment in VO2 nanomembranes upon the phase transition. Under geometry design and optimization, the rolled-up smart window with high [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] is achieved for the modulation of indoor temperature self-adapted to seasons and climate. Furthermore, such rolled-up smart window enables high infrared reflectance after triggered phase transition and acts as a smart lens protective cover for strong radiation. This work supports the feasibility of self-rolling technology in smart windows and lens protection, which promises broad interest and practical applications of self-adapting devices and systems for smart building, intelligent sensors and actuators with the perspective of energy efficiency.

Abstract
Inspired by natural mobile microorganisms, researchers have developed micro/nanomotors (MNMs) that can autonomously move by transducing different kinds of energies into kinetic energy. The rapid development of MNMs has created tremendous opportunities for biomedical fields including diagnostics, therapeutics, and theranostics. Although the great progress has been made in MNM research, at a fundamental level, the accepted propulsion mechanisms are still a controversial matter. In practical applications such as precision nanomedicine, the precise control of the motion, including the speed and directionality, of MNMs is also important, which makes advanced motion manipulation desirable. Very recently, diverse MNMs with different propulsion strategies, morphologies, sizes, porosities and chemical structures have been fabricated and applied for various uses. Herein, we thoroughly summarize the physical principles behind propulsion strategies, as well as the recent advances in motion manipulation methods and relevant biomedical applications of these MNMs. The current challenges in MNM research are also discussed. We hope this review can provide a bird's eye overview of the MNM research and inspire researchers to create novel and more powerful MNMs.

Abstract
Spontaneous oscillations on the order of several hertz are the drivers of many crucial processes in nature. From bacterial swimming to mammal gaits, converting static energy inputs into slowly oscillating power is key to the autonomy of organisms across scales. However, the fabrication of slow micrometre-scale oscillators remains a major roadblock towards fully-autonomous microrobots. Here, we study a low-frequency oscillator that emerges from a collective of active microparticles at the air-liquid interface of a hydrogen peroxide drop. Their interactions transduce ambient chemical energy into periodic mechanical motion and on-board electrical currents. Surprisingly, these oscillations persist at larger ensemble sizes only when a particle with modified reactivity is added to intentionally break permutation symmetry. We explain such emergent order through the discovery of a thermodynamic mechanism for asymmetry-induced order. The on-board power harvested from the stabilised oscillations enables the use of electronic components, which we demonstrate by cyclically and synchronously driving a microrobotic arm. This work highlights a new strategy for achieving low-frequency oscillations at the microscale, paving the way for future microrobotic autonomy. Spontaneous low-frequency oscillations, which are a feature of biological systems, are challenging to engineer into microrobotic systems. The authors discover a mechanism for asymmetry-induced order and realise electrical and mechanical oscillations in a particle collective to power a microrobotic arm.

Abstract
Soft robotics is a rapidly evolving research field that focuses on developing robots with bioinspired actuation/sensing mechanisms and highly flexible soft materials, some of which are similar to those found in living organisms. The hydrogel has the characteristics of excellent biocompatibility, softness, and elasticity, which makes it an ideal candidate material for the preparation of soft robots. Here we utilized a self-healing approach to develop a catalytically driven soft robot, which was constructed by dynamic imine bonds between modular hydrogels. One of the modules was a hydrogel formed by dynamic aldimine cross-linking of chitosan and glutaraldehyde, and the other module was a hydrogel embedded with catalase. The soft hydrogel robot moved because of catalytic reactions between the robot and environment [hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) fuel], giving rise to a fluidic release that supports propulsion, as inspired by the jet-propulsive mechanism in swimming dragonfly larvae. The speed of the soft robot can be mediated by adjusting the concentration of H2O2 and enable/disable movement based on the folding and unfolding of enzymes. In addition, the hydrogel formed by replacing glutaraldehyde with dialdehyde-functionalized PEG2000 had excellent elastic properties, and the soft robot based on PEG2000 had a higher movement speed than that based on glutaraldehyde under the same H2O2 concentration. Moreover, the addition of iron oxide nanoparticles can realize the magnetic guidance of the soft robot and the combination of different modules can realize different motion modes. The highly configurable self-healing catalytic soft robot holds great potential for a variety of interesting applications, including swimming robots, robot-assisted water treatment, and drug release.

Abstract
AbstractDNA, the well‐known molecule that carries the genetic information of almost all forms of life, represents a pivotal element in formulating intelligent and versatile micro/nanorobotic systems. DNA‐functionalized micro/nanorobots have opened new and exciting opportunities in many research areas due to the synergistic combination of self‐propulsion at the micro/nanoscale and the high specificity and programmability of DNA interactions. Here, their designs and applications are critically reviewed, which span from the use of DNA as the fuel to chemotactically power nanorobots toward cancer cells to DNA as the main building block for sophisticated phototactic biorobots, DNA nanodevices to self‐monitor microrobots’ activity status, DNA and RNA sensing, nucleic acids isolation, gene therapy, and water purification. The perspective on future directions of the field is also shared, envisioning DNA‐mediated reconfigurable assemblies of nanorobotic swarms.

Abstract
Soft, one-stimulus-double-response, thermo-sensitive, PNIPAm-based microgels are designed for controlled autonomous motion under stimuli. At higher temperature, the motors with physically encapsulated catalase move faster, while motors in which catalase is chemically linked to PNIPAm ceased moving. The phenomenon is reversible over multiple cycles of temperature.

Abstract
In recent years, microbubbles have been widely used in the field of microrobots due to their unique properties. Microbubbles can be easily produced and used as power sources or tools of microrobots, and the bubbles can even serve as microrobots themselves. As a power source, bubbles can propel microrobots to swim in liquid under low-Reynolds-number conditions. As a manipulation tool, microbubbles can act as the micromanipulators of microrobots, allowing them to operate upon particles, cells, and organisms. As a microrobot, microbubbles can operate and assemble complex microparts in two- or three-dimensional spaces. This review provides a comprehensive overview of bubble applications in microrobotics including propulsion, micromanipulation, and microassembly. First, we introduce the diverse bubble generation and control methods. Then, we review and discuss how bubbles can play a role in microrobotics via three functions: propulsion, manipulation, and assembly. Finally, by highlighting the advantages and current challenges of this progress, we discuss the prospects of microbubbles in microrobotics.

Abstract
Nanowire-motors (NW-Ms) are promoting the rapid development of emerging biomedicine and environmental governance, and are an important branch of micro-nano motors in the development of nanotechnology. In recent years, huge research breakthroughs have been made in these fields in terms of the fascinating microstructure, conversion efficiency and practical applications of NW-Ms. This review article introduces the latest milestones in NW-Ms research, from production methods, driving mechanisms, control methods to targeted drug delivery, sewage detection, sensors and cell capture. The dynamics and physics of micro-nano devices are reviewed, and finally the current challenges and future research directions in this field are discussed. This review further aims to provide certain guidance for the driving of NW-Ms to meet the urgent needs of emerging applications.

Abstract
Distinguishing the operating mechanisms of nano- and micromotors powered by chemical gradients, i.e. "autophoresis", holds the key for fundamental and applied reasons. In this article, we propose and experimentally confirm that the speeds of a self-diffusiophoretic colloidal motor scale inversely to its population density but not for self-electrophoretic motors, because the former is an ion source and thus increases the solution ionic strength over time while the latter does not. They also form clusters in visually distinguishable and quantifiable ways. This pair of rules is simple, powerful, and insensitive to the specific material composition, shape or size of a colloidal motor, and does not require any measurement beyond typical microscopy. These rules are not only useful in clarifying the operating mechanisms of typical autophoretic micromotors, but also in predicting the dynamics of unconventional ones that are yet to be experimentally realized, even those involving enzymes.

Abstract
Halloysite-based tubular nanorockets with chemical-/light-controlled self-propulsion and on-demand acceleration in velocity are reported. The nanorockets are fabricated by modifying halloysite nanotubes with nanoparticles of silver (Ag) and light-responsive α-Fe2O3 to prepare a composite of Ag-Fe2O3/HNTs. Compared to the traditional fabrication of tubular micro-/nanomotors, this strategy has merits in employing natural clay as substrates of an asymmetric tubular structure, of abundance, and of no complex instruments required. The velocity of self-propelled Ag-Fe2O3/HNTs nanorockets in fuel (3.0% H2O2) was ca. 1.7 times higher under the irradiation of visible light than that in darkness. Such light-enhanced propulsion can be wirelessly modulated by adjusting light intensity and H2O2 concentration. The highly repeatable and controlled "weak/strong" propulsion can be implemented by turning a light on and off. With the synergistic coupling of the photocatalysis of the Ag-Fe2O3 heterostructure and advanced oxidation in H2O2/visible light conditions, the Ag-Fe2O3/HNTs nanorockets achieve an enhanced performance of wastewater remediation. A test was done by the catalytic degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride. The light-enhanced propulsion is demonstrated to accelerate the degradation kinetics dramatically. All of these results illustrated that such motors can achieve efficient water remediation and open a new path for the photodegradation of organic pollutions.

Abstract
The field of active matter is a nascent area of research in soft condensed matter physics, which is drawing on the expertise of researchers from diverse disciplines. Small scale active particles-both inorganic and biological-display non-trivial emergent dynamics and interactions that could help us understand complex biological processes and phenomena. Recently, using microfluidic technologies, several research groups have performed important experimental and theoretical studies to understand the behavior of self-propelled particles and molecular active matter within confined environments-to glean a fundamental understanding of the cellular processes occurring under ultra-low Reynolds number conditions. In this chapter, we would like to review applications of microfluidics in active matter research, highlighting a few important theoretical and experimental investigations. We will conclude the discussion with a note on the future of this field mentioning a few open questions that are at the forefront of our minds.

Abstract
Traditionally, the primary field, where curvature has been at the heart of research, is the theory of general relativity. In recent studies, however, the impact of curvilinear geometry enters various disciplines, ranging from solid-state physics over soft-matter physics, chemistry, and biology to mathematics, giving rise to a plethora of emerging domains such as curvilinear nematics, curvilinear studies of cell biology, curvilinear semiconductors, superfluidity, optics, 2D van der Waals materials, plasmonics, magnetism, and superconductivity. Here, the state of the art is summarized and prospects for future research in curvilinear solid-state systems exhibiting such fundamental cooperative phenomena as ferromagnetism, antiferromagnetism, and superconductivity are outlined. Highlighting the recent developments and current challenges in theory, fabrication, and characterization of curvilinear micro- and nanostructures, special attention is paid to perspective research directions entailing new physics and to their strong application potential. Overall, the perspective is aimed at crossing the boundaries between the magnetism and superconductivity communities and drawing attention to the conceptual aspects of how extension of structures into the third dimension and curvilinear geometry can modify existing and aid launching novel functionalities. In addition, the perspective should stimulate the development and dissemination of research and development oriented techniques to facilitate rapid transitions from laboratory demonstrations to industry-ready prototypes and eventual products.

Abstract
Synthetic autonomous locomotion shows great promise in many research fields, including biomedicine and environmental science, because it can allow targeted drug/cargo delivery and the circumvention of kinetic and thermodynamic limitations. Creating such self-moving objects often requires advanced production techniques as exemplified by catalytic, gas-forming microrockets. Here, we grow such structures via the self-organization of precipitate tubes in chemical gardens by simply injecting metal salts into silicate solutions. This method generates hollow, cylindrical objects rich in catalytic manganese oxide that also feature a partially insulating outer layer of inert silica. In dilute H2O2 solution, these structures undergo self-propulsion by ejecting streams of oxygen bubbles. Each emission event pushes the tube forward by 1-2 tube radii. The ejection frequency depends linearly on the peroxide concentration as quantified by acoustic measurements of bursting bubbles. We expect our facile method and key results to be applicable to a diverse range of materials and reactions.

Abstract
Herein, we describe a Janus micromotor smartphone platform for the motion-based detection of glutathione. The system compromises a universal three-dimensional (3D)-printed platform to hold a commercial smartphone, which is equipped with an external magnification optical lens (20-400×) directly attached to the camera, an adjustable sample holder to accommodate a glass slide, and a light-emitting diode (LED) source. The presence of glutathione in peroxide-rich sample media results in the decrease in the speed of 20 μm graphene-wrapped/PtNPs Janus micromotors due to poisoning of the catalytic layer by a thiol bond formation. The speed can be correlated with the concentration of glutathione, achieving a limit of detection of 0.90 μM, with percent recoveries and excellent selectivity under the presence of interfering amino acids and proteins. Naked-eye visualization of the speed decrease allows for the design of a test strip for fast glutathione detection (30 s), avoiding previous amplification strategies or sample preparation steps. The concept can be extended to other micromotor approaches relying on fluorescence or colorimetric detection for future multiplexed schemes.

Abstract
Taking inspirations from nature, we endeavor to develop catalytically self-propelled nanojets from a type of tubular clay minerals, halloysite nanotubes (HNTs), and utilize them as catalysts targeted for catalysis where the traditional means of mechanical agitation cannot be implemented. Nanojets of Fe3O4@HNTs/Pt were prepared by impregnating platinum nanoparticles (Pt NPs) in lumens of HNTs and selective grafting of magnetite (Fe3O4) particles on the external surface. The HNT-based nanojets were validated to be highly suitable both in free bulk solution and in microfluidic flow. An example of Fenton degradation catalyzed by these jets was demonstrated. The powerful movement of Fe3O4@HNTs/Pt (368 ± 50 μm·s-1) fueled by 5.0% wt. H2O2 was found to follow a bubble propulsion mechanism, and the motion exhibits collective behavior as swarms. The clay tubes were for the first time observed to self-assemble into fish-like aggregates during swimming, reflecting natural occurrence of motion-evolution philosophy. Guided motion was realized by employing magnetic manipulation which makes jets feasible for reactors with complex microchannels/reactors.

Abstract
We report a rapid strategy to construct self-propelled functional tubular micromotors. Based on the established strategy, magnetic covalent-organic-framework-functionalized micromotors were fabricated to implement sensing of explosives in water. Such micromotors can complete fluorescent "On-Off" detection of trace explosive 2,4,6-trinitrophenol within 10 min.

Abstract
Phenolics are size products present in tons concentrations in industrial wastewater that can cause adverse health effects when released in the environment. As such, there is a growing interest in the development of efficient strategies for the removal of phenolic compounds from polluted water. Herein we describe the use of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT)-Au/peroxidase micromotors as dynamic biocatalytic platforms for the removal of model phenolics (phenol, bisphenol A, guaiacol, pyrogallol and catechol). Micromotors are synthetized by using a simplified template electrodeposition protocol followed by covalent enzyme immobilization in the inner Au layer. Kinetic parameters revealed that enzyme immobilization in the inner micromotor layer increased over 2-fold the enzymatic activity, along with increasing operational pH and thermal stabilities. The micromotors can propel at speed of up to 60 µm/s, generating an enhanced fluid mixing that results in removal efficiencies of up to 60% as compared with the 27% removal when using free peroxidase under the same conditions. In addition, excellent activities of almost 100% were obtained within ten cycles of removal using the micromotors. This newly developed bioremediation strategy holds considerable promise in for its application in large scale water treatment systems and many relevant environmental processes.

Abstract
The rapid development of state-of-the-art nanotechnology is driven by the emerging novel nanofabrication methods, such as self-rolling of 2D materials or nanosheets. Nonetheless, the traditional chemical etching-based "roll-up" technologies suffer from a low fabrication efficiency and generally produce only scroll-like structures. In this work, we develop a versatile, ultrafast, and etching-free method to synthesize self-rolled metallic nanostructures through hydrogel surface buckling enabled exfoliation, which enables rapid exfoliation and self-rolling of metallic nanosheets at a rate about 1 to 2 orders of magnitude faster than other methods. Furthermore, we observe a scroll-helix-scroll transition through the twisting of the self-rolled nanosheets. Through extensive finite element simulations and experiments, we reveal the thermodynamics underpinning these configurational transitions.

Abstract
Learning from the locomotion of natural organisms is one of the most effective strategies for designing microrobots. However, the development of bioinspired microrobots is still challenging because of technical bottlenecks such as design and seamless integration of high-performance actuation mechanism and high-density energy source for untethered locomotion. Directly harnessing the activation energy and intelligence of living tissues in synthetic micromachines provides an alternative route to developing biohybrid microrobots. Here, we propose an approach to engineering the genetic and nervous systems of a nematode worm, Caenorhabditis elegans, and creating an untethered, highly controllable living soft microrobot (called "RoboWorm"). A living worm is engineered through optogenetic and biochemical methods to shut down the signal transmissions between its neuronal and muscular systems while its muscle cells still remain optically excitable. Through dynamic modeling and experimental verification of the worm crawling, we found that the phase difference between the worm body curvature and the muscular activation pattern generates the thrust force for crawling locomotion. By reproducing the phase difference via optogenetic excitation of the worm body muscles, we emulated the major worm crawling behaviors in a controllable manner. Furthermore, with real-time visual feedback of the worm crawling, we realized closed-loop regulation of the movement direction and destination of single worms. This technology may facilitate scientific studies on the biophysics and neural basis of crawling locomotion of C. elegans and other nematode species.

Abstract
The idea of "fantastic voyagers" carrying out medical tasks within the human body has existed as part of popular culture for many decades. The concept revolved around a miniaturized robot that can travel inside the human body and perform complicated functions such as surgery, navigation of otherwise inaccessible biological environments, and delivery of therapeutics. Since the last decade, significant developments have occurred in this arena that are yet to enter mainstream biomedical practises. Here, we define the challenges to make this fiction into reality. We begin by chalking the journey from pills, nanoparticles, and then to micro-nanomotors. The review describes the principles, physicochemical contexts, and advantages that micro-nanomotors provide. The article then describes micro-nanomotors' obstacles such as maneuverability, in vivo imaging, toxicity, and biodistribution. Abstract
Micro- and nanomotors (MNMs) are micro/nanoparticles that can perform autonomous motion in complex fluids driven by different power sources. They have been attracting increasing attention due to their great potential in a variety of applications ranging from environmental science to biomedical engineering. Over the past decades, this field has evolved rapidly, with many significant innovations contributed by global researchers. In this review, we first briefly overview the methods used to propel motors and then present the main strategies used to design proper MNMs. Next, we highlight recent fascinating applications of MNMs in two examplary fields, water remediation and biomedical microrobots, and conclude this review with a brief discussion of challenges in the field.

Abstract
Due to their unique ability to actively move, micro/nanomotors offer the possibility of breaking through the limitations of traditional passive drug delivery systems for the treatment of many diseases, and have attracted the increasing attention of researchers. However, at present, the realization of many advantages of micro/nanomotors in disease treatment in vivo is still in its infancy, because of the complexity and particularity of diseases in different parts of human body. In this Minireview, we first focus on the biosafety and functionality of micro/nanomotors as a biomedical treatment system. Then, we address the treatment difficulties of various diseases in vivo (such as ophthalmic disease, orthopedic disease, gastrointestinal disease, cardiovascular disease, and cancer), and then review the research progress of biomedical micro/nanomotors in the past 20 years, Finally, we propose the challenges in this field and possible future development directions.

Wireless nano-/micromotors powered by chemical reactions and/or external fields generate motive forces, perform tasks, and significantly extend short-range dynamic responses of passive biomedical microcarriers. However, before micromotors can be translated into clinical use, several major problems, including the biocompatibility of materials, the toxicity of chemical fuels, and deep tissue imaging methods, must be solved. Nanomaterials with enzyme-like characteristics (e.g., catalase, oxidase, peroxidase, superoxide dismutase), that is, nanozymes, can significantly expand the scope of micromotors' chemical fuels. A convergence of nanozymes, micromotors, and microfluidics can lead to a paradigm shift in the fabrication of multifunctional micromotors in reasonable quantities, encapsulation of desired subsystems, and engineering of FDA-approved core-shell structures with tuneable biological, physical, chemical, and mechanical properties. Microfluidic methods are used to prepare stable bubbles/microbubbles and capsules integrating ultrasound, optoacoustic, fluorescent, and magnetic resonance imaging modalities. The aim here is to discuss an interdisciplinary approach of three independent emerging topics: micromotors, nanozymes, and microfluidics to creatively: 1) embrace new ideas, 2) think across boundaries, and 3) solve problems whose solutions are beyond the scope of a single discipline toward the development of micro-bio-chemo-mechanical-systems for diverse bioapplications.

Abstract
The past decade has seen intriguing reports and heated debates concerning the chemically-driven enhanced motion of objects ranging from small molecules to millimetre-size synthetic robots. These objects, in solutions in which chemical reactions were occurring, were observed to diffuse (spread non-directionally) or swim (move directionally) at rates exceeding those expected from Brownian motion alone. The debates have focused on whether observed enhancement is an experimental artefact or a real phenomenon. If the latter were true, then we would also need to explain how the chemical energy is converted into mechanical work. In this Perspective, we summarize and discuss recent observations and theories of active diffusion and swimming. Notably, the chemomechanical coupling and magnitude of diffusion enhancement are strongly size-dependent and should vanish as the size of the swimmers approaches the molecular scale. We evaluate the reliability of common techniques to measure diffusion coefficients and finish by considering the potential applications and chemical to mechanical energy conversion efficiencies of typical nanoswimmers and microswimmers.

Abstract
Nanoscale robotics have the ability that it can productively transform multiple energy sources into motion and strength which reflects an expeditiously appearing and captivating area for research of robotics. In today's plethora, biomedical nanorobotics played an intricate character with numerous units of robots working at the pathological site in a coordinated manner. The synergistic action of the several nanorobotics has been employed for the fulfilment of the task such as large-scale detoxification, delivery of the large pharmacological/therapeutic efficacious payloads, etc. that is nearly unfeasible or unalterable practically by using single nanorobot. The collective intelligence of the nanorobot is advancing progressively at the nanoscale to reinforce their precision treatment potentially. Conclusively, after obtaining certain consideration regarding the nanorobotics sciences, many professionals are compendiously involving in the emerging highly efficacious therapeutic technology that encourages the scientist or designing of the tissues specific for the site-specific nanorobotic diagnostic devices. As a result, the closed and professional type between the field of Nanotechnology and Medical Sciences will provide another new highly oriented level to the domain of nanorobotics.

Abstract
Therapeutic agents, such as drugs and cells, play an essential role in virtually every treatment of injury, illness, or disease. However, the conventional practices of drug delivery often result in undesirable side effects caused by drug overdose and off-target delivery. In the case of cell delivery, the survival rate of the transplanted cells is extremely low and difficulties with the administration route of cells remain a problem. Recently, magnetically actuated microrobots have started offering unique opportunities in targeted therapeutic delivery due to their tiny size and ability to access hard-to-reach lesions in a minimally invasive manner; considerable advances in this regard have been made over the past decade. Here, recent progress in magnetically actuated microrobots, developed for targeted drug/cell delivery, is presented, with a focus on their design features and mechanisms for controlled therapeutic release. Additionally, the practical challenges faced by the microrobots, and future research directions toward the swift bench-to-bedside translation of the microrobots are addressed.

Abstract
Different propulsion mechanisms have been suggested for describing the motion of a variety of chemical micromotors, which have attracted great attention in the last decades due to their high efficiency and thrust force, enabling several applications in the fields of environmental remediation and biomedicine. Bubble-recoil based motion, in particular, has been modeled by three different phenomena: capillary forces, bubble growth, and bubble expulsion. However, these models have been suggested independently based on a single influencing factor (i.e., viscosity), limiting the understanding of the overall micromotor performance. Therefore, the combined effect of medium viscosity, surface tension, and fuel concentration is analyzed on the micromotor swimming ability, and the dominant propulsion mechanisms that describe its motion more accurately are identified. Using statistically relevant experimental data, a holistic theoretical model is proposed for bubble-propelled tubular catalytic micromotors that includes all three above-mentioned phenomena and provides deeper insights into their propulsion physics toward optimized geometries and experimental conditions.

Abstract
Inspired by the autonomously moving organisms in nature, artificially synthesized micro-nano-scale power devices, also called micro-and nanomotors, are proposed. These micro-and nanomotors that can self-propel have been used for biological sensing, environmental remediation, and targeted drug transportation. In this article, we will systematically overview the conversion of chemical energy or other forms of energy in the external environment (such as electrical energy, light energy, magnetic energy, and ultrasound) into kinetic mechanical energy by micro-and nanomotors. The development and progress of these energy conversion mechanisms in the past ten years are reviewed, and the broad application prospects of micro-and nanomotors in energy conversion are provided.
